SOUTH SIKKIM LEISURE TRIP

Itinerary 4N/5D:

Day – 1 Kolkata to Bagdogra flight – Bagdogra to Ravangla (pre-booked cab)

Day - 2 Leisure day at the resort / nearby hikes

Day – 3 Visit to Temi Tea Garden and Buddha Park

Day – 4 Namchi Chardaam tour

Day -5 Ravangla to Bagdogra – back to Kolkata

Introduction:

Ok, so, I’ve been to Sikkim a bunch of times before and as someone from Calcutta, Sikkim is probably the best place to go when it comes to an overall experience in the mountains. Most of the places are not yet commercialized and therefore far from the maddening crowd. The small but majestic land of Sikkim is divided essentially in to four parts, North – South – East – West, not much of a surprise there!

This article is about my recent experience in South Sikkim at a small town called Ravangla, which happens to be one of most important places for the Tibetan settlements in Sikkim.

I am not going to go much into the history as this article is aimed at giving you a concise idea of a nice leisurely vacation on Sikkim, specially for people from Kolkata or neighboring cities.

Day -1

We got a flight to Bagdogra but now if the tickets prices are not that high, the newly opened Pakyong Airport in Sikkim is a better idea.

Ravangla is little bit of an off-beat destination so you won’t ready private cabs from the airport, so ideally it’s better to book one from before.

Charges vary from anything between Rs. 2,000/- to Rs. 5,000/- depending on the car and the season. We got a Wagon-R for Rs. 2,500/- (October).

About 125 Kms, 5 Hrs – mostly because of the poor road conditions and small halts for lunch / tea.

Day – 2

We stayed at a beautiful and cosy resort named Barfung Retreat. Some of the pictures of the resort are below. Some alternatives would be Narsing Resort (recommended because of the view), Babumoshai resort (not quite recommended but if it suits your budget then not that bad)

Spend the day at the resort, soak in the fresh cold mountain air. Listen to the birds. Watch the butterflies mingle with the flowers. Drink some Chhang (their local alcoholic drink made out of fermented millets, served in bamboo stems – must try)

You may also go for small hikes.

Remind you, that most of these resorts are at least 2-3 kms away from the town, which is quite a walk in the mountains. Bargung retreat is about 6 kms downhill from the Town. Narsing is about 4 kms up-hill.

Try this food joint called Kookay Restaurant right at the mouth of the town where the taxi stand begins.

Must try items- Beef Thenthuk, pork momo, Shay Phalay and the mighty smooth but kicking Dansberg beer (probably one of my favorite brews from the country)

Day -3

Now, if you have pre-booked a car for your entire trip which would cost nothing less than Rs. 3,000/- a day + GST + lunch for driver etc. then you’re sight-seeing is sorted. However, you haven’t done that, like I didn’t, then it’s ideal to go to the town and negotiate with a taxi driver for sight-seeing. The resorts also arrange for cars but they will be slightly expensive, since there’s some commission involved.

Temi Tea Garden – 30 kms.

Buddha Park – 10 mins up-hill drive from Ravangla town. You may take a walk, if it fancies you.

Tip: The view at Buddha Park is beautiful if you can make it early in the morning. Go for the tea making tour at Temi Tea Garden. Really worth it. Mention that to the driver before hiring.

Day – 4

Namchi – Chardam is a place for temple lovers. As the name suggest, it’s got small model representations of some of the most important pilgrimage destinations in India, such as, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannatha Puri temple… etc. etc..

The complex is quite new, well maintained and serene. Ideal place for family day trip.

There’s also a ropeway nearby in the Samdruptsey hill. Unfortunately, when we visited the weather was cloudy but had it been clear, the view from the rope-way would be stellar. Rs. 50/- per head.

Day – 5

Get a cab, bid your goodbyes to the beautiful town of Ravangla.

Cost with taxi (approximately): Rs. 36,000 – Rs 40,000/- for two

Plan well ahead to reduce flight costs or avail trains if you have more days in hand.

You may also save on private taxi and get shared cabs at least for airport / station transfers, which are insanely cheap.

The streets were being washed early in the morning. The very old part of this city was silent, calm and resting in peace. It seemed like the British left us independent just the day before. The normal bourgeoisie segment of people would cherish their freedom but the intellectual and rather pessimistic will see the glass half empty. He will analyse the sense of prior dependency and the utopian dream fulfilment which seemingly leads to a disaster. How pathetic will the government be? Yes! We can run the nation and give its long lost glory back but first we need to draft a massive constitution, a charter... more like a rule book. Oh yes! We’re democratic. This will and forever be a free country. Free from the shackles of tyranny and dictatorship. The people’s voice will be the government’s voice. We will draft a massive rule book in order to maintain what we are promising to our citizens. We will choose from an elite class of adept personalities, each a pioneer in their own field to draft and sign the rule book. This very book will be our constitution.

Finally the constitution becomes centric and salient. Subsequently it gets amended several times to fit in to the dynamic society. In the mean time the seat of the government is shaken and stirred by many protagonists and rebels. A steady government is a myth in democracy and a full fledged reality in autocracy and monopoly. The government becomes too greedy in its pursuits and restricts the flow of any healthy investment. For a shocking period of forty years the government blocks up the country. It stores every penny in its escritoire.

Then all of a sudden a change in breeze takes over the supreme democratic leaders and it opens its markets to the world, very slowly but consistently. We finally start to trade not just with goods in exchange of money, but money in exchange of money.

But it was too late. We were late in every sphere in history. We have taken too much time to get independent, and too much time to create value. We have maintained the continuum. Today when I walk through this really old and marvellous historic part of the city, I realize that nothing has really changed but the attitude of people. The once so patriotic and a substantially astral race of people, have lost their dream somewhere in between their bread and butter. They have learnt to compromise and escape and embrace the democratic hypocrisy with sullen faces and battered hearts.

Hello... said the girl from the corner of the bus stop. She was at some distance. I could only read her lips from that far. She even waved at me to make sure I was noticing her. What is it about her? Why should I notice her anyway? The apparent answer would be that I am a boy and she is a pretty girl. That’s all. The story begins right here. It’s not very often that you see a girl in commotion of the street zombies running to and fro, especially at a bus stop, waving at you, trying to talk to you. Pretty or not pretty. However this girl seemed pretty interested. Odd events will always give you dilemmas and doubts as to what can be the possible outcomes of such events.

I moved toward the girl and presented a smile in appreciation of her picking me, out of the massive crowd to have a chat or ask for a favour or whatever the reason is. On my way of taking ten more steps so as to commence my conversation, I was wondering what to say or ask. A million things came to my mind and they fought with each other like electrons. I needed a fixation and with all the data in my head, I came up with something stupid... “I saw you waving at me...Hi”. She wore the same smile and looked on the ground. “Do need something? I mean can I help you with something?” She giggled with an intention to mock my attitude. I faked a giggle with a further intention to mock my attitude. “No, I don’t need any help” she said. Then a reasonable question came in my mind and I took a shot, “Do I know you in any case? I am really sorry I don’t seem to remember you very well then” she laughed this time. “Of course you don’t know me, neither do I know you” she said.

I started wondering the real deal here. Several things started bugging me such as “crazy chick” “whore” or “slutty chick”, those dirty little connotations, which can be use literally and metaphorically. Then again, something very unconventional bumped into my head. I started wondering that, maybe this chick is simply trying to build a conversation. Maybe she is looking for a friend. Maybe she needs someone to talk to about something. The idea was very unconventional since the time and place was quite a turn off as a conversation starter. Finally after a pregnant pause I said “Hi again... my name is Jethalal and I work in XYZ company and bla bla”.

“Nice to meet you Jethalal, my name is Parinita, but Jethalal... do you possess common sense”? Somehow I was not offended by that. I replied with a smile “may be, but I really shouldn’t judge myself should I?” “Well of course you should, how will you ever grow up if you can’t judge yourself? We all need to assess who we are in the end of the day”. She replied hastily. “Well I’m not married, guess that proves that I have common sense” I said with a little smirk on my face.

Funnily she didn’t loathe my anti-marriage attitude and to add to my humour she said “Good one”.

Meanwhile the bus came down, she had to go. She suddenly held my hand and asked me to drop her home. I said that I really have to get back home early since I have better things to do. She said “Oh screw that...you won’t regret this. Come along it’ll be fun”. I went along.

We were quite on the bus. The journey was uninteresting and boring. Lots of people were looking at us, thinking as if we were an angry married couple. Some of them were even murmuring things and giggling at us. I couldn’t see why. Then I noticed that the girl was too hot and good looking for a man like me. Why would a pretty girl go out with a weird guy called ‘Jethalal’? For some strange reason, the girl held my hand and gave me comforting smiles every time anybody laughed at me.

We reached the stop. Nobody other than us got down from the bus. I started panicking a little, since this was all too weird for me. There were many alleys one leading to the other then finally she brought me to a river side. I had never known that side of the city, until that day.

It was quite and vacant. Some slum boys were taking a dip in the river. The sun almost drowned in the horizon. The bank was covered with old buildings in British architecture. By the look and design I comprehended that they used to be factories or barracks, all now in half ruins. The birds were returning home after their day of wandering about the skies of the indifferent city. The golden light of the sun hit the river, the world seemed to be in sepia and everything looked so arcane and mystical.

“It’s a beautiful place” I said to the girl. She said,” I don't live here though, I just brought you here so that we could talk” “talk about what?” I said...

“Nothing... just tell me everything you feel about me. You can be honest here” she replied, keeping her hand softly on my chest, her hair flying all over my face under the breeze and the sweet intonation of the golden river.

Days

Is it me or days are actually sprinting by

with every shave of my unpopular beard

I am counting two weeks in my fingers

but standing still,with the week ahead in hand

and the same old Cup of TEA,

with every sip, a sunken realization of a sickening rut

Pages of reading and comprehending

with every chapter ending,

leading to the inception of another

and by the time its twilight in the Evening

I realize I've bought more than half of my day

but the drill remains the same

hackneyed by its mandatory communal strength

proven to be efficient that way

no matter how much dehydrating it gets

in the midst of chores and its inane monotony

there goes another day.....

Long Distance Usual

Its been just over 2 weeks that my girlfriend has left my town for pursuing her higher studies. She went to college that has its name mentioned in the premier list of art colleges. Not that there is an "official List", but its a word of everyone's mouth. Some of my friends were actually kind of worried about me as to whether I'd be able to take her absence and bear the emptiness, and most importantly the insecurity of my paramour falling in the grasp of an alpha. Well..of all their concerns, I was least worried about the last one... one of the major reasons for which was that she chose for a girl's college and besides that, we have gone down way too far with each other (not that we're planning baby names but then in time.. !) so the thought of a second option is far beyond the horizon.
However, its not been too easy either. My problem is too practical to let any soft and gooey emotions seep in. Increasing mobile bills leading to lack of requisite communication is turning out to be a disturbing itch. But then i figured that we have to go through this like any other couple. I used to find Skype talk a little lame but now its my Savior.We do our best talking there amongst all the background noise and occasional feedback and line cuts due to our god speed internet. However, what's occupying her and me to some level is our studies. My exams are at my doorsteps and she has a gigantic curriculum with loads of research work to do. The only thing that keeps us going fine is looking forward to the holidays, where we can make the best out of the limited number of days.

Anyway, my point here is that it is completely up to us to maintain a long distance relationship. It can work out just as fine as it would otherwise. The level of understanding needs to be as clear as a mountain brook. The problem is, people take up a negative stance in the first place. Optimism is bliss in this case. One of my dear friends told me once that Long distance doesn't work out at any cost.. but well I do believe at 1500 Rupees a month it can work out pretty fine. It is working wonders for me at least. If you think of a breach, the breach will come and haunt you. I decided to stay chilled and eager, eager to see her more and more as time for holidays is just around the corner...

Blogging has come a long long.. long way out. Started as one of the most popular modes of internet communication and expression of ideas and feelings. Now websites like Twitter and Facebook are governing the generation of "social networking". Its a good thing. I use facebook extensively... Its a brilliant way to keep in touch with your peers and frankly, its quite a thing when you have absolutely nothing to do... But Blogging still retains its crudeness and remains as one of the most powerful modes of expression, with a gigantic array of viewers and readers. Blogspot is certainly one of the most outstanding provider of such a platform.
