Review: SONY Cyber-Shot HX200V

            The HX200V houses a 30x optical zoom lens instead of the super-wide-angle 24mm of many competitors, it has an ever-so-slightly-longer 27mm equivalent as its widest-angle. It’s still good enough for group shots, and while that 3mm may not sound like much it does make a notable difference in how much the frame "opens up". But this also means that once zoomed in to its full potential the camera has an 810mm equivalent zoom. That’s some far-reaching stuff, ideal for picking off distant subjects so that they fill out the frame.
            The Sony’s other standout feature is the inclusion of GPS – Global Positioning Satellite – technology. It’s not so much a rarity in many gadgets these days, but it’s found in only a handful of superzoom cameras.
            Activate this feature and it’s possible to attribute shots with location data that can come in handy when cataloguing, uploading online or associating to some websites. The HX200V also goes the extra mile by offering log record – a feature able to trace your journey and then play back the route and any associated images in Google Earth.

At the controls

Although the HX200V is a near carbon copy of its HX100V predecessor – excluding a redesigned grip – we’re pleased as punch with overall layout.

          On the back of the camera there’s a 3-inch, 920K-dot vari-angle LCD, complimented by a built-in 201k-dot electronic viewfinder. Although the small size can prove a frustration and the viewfinder resolution isn’t especially high – indeed it’s the very same finder as its predecessor, or that found in the Nikon P510 – it’s still a welcome tool. However, the similarly priced Fujifilm HS30EXR does outperform every other consumer superzoom in the viewfinder department, so the Sony has some catching up to do.
          Most compact cameras have a zoom toggle control around the shutter to control zoom. Now, while the HX200V has this control its lens also has a manual ring that can be instead. To make it more versatile the flick of a switch to the side of the lens barrel assigns it manual focus control instead. This means both zoom and manual focus are ideally placed to the hand, and controlling the camera feels more advanced than a standard compact. Whichever control you chose, there’s the benefit to different shooting styles - the zoom toggle is great for an extra steady hold in movie mode, or you may zoom with the toggle and manually focus with the lens ring. It’s a cracking design.
          The lens itself also features Sony’s optical SteadyShot image stabilisation technology to counteract handshake. As the technology is lens-based it provides not only a steadier preview image when composing, but also helps keep shots all the sharper. With such long focal lengths available this is an essential to have – and it works a treat.
          Another quirky new feature is the display level; a spirit-level-like digital gauge that can overlay the screen or viewfinder to assist with shooting that perfect, straight horizon.

Pro performer?

Just behind the shutter button the HX200V has a dedicated focus button that opens up the autofocus area controls: there’s multi, centre point, or flexible spot AF where the focus area can be user-defined on the LCD screen by using the rear d-pad. This last option adds that extra level of control that will be essential for certain shooting situations, though the auto modes are also reliable.

The autofocus system is quick and responsive, and although close-focus isn’t the camera’s strong point, it’s more than capable of acquiring subject focus throughout the full range of the zoom, right to its full extension that’s not something that can be said for all its competitors. A quick comparison between the Nikon P510 and Fujifilm HS30EXR sees the Sony come out on top - it’s quicker and more accurate.
Just next to the focus button is a custom button that, by default, controls exposure lock but can be also set up to quick-access white balance, ND filter, metering or smile shutter instead.

New sensor: triumph or too trying?

        When we reviewed the HX100V in May 2011, we remarked that although image quality was good, the 16.2-megapixel sensor wasn’t able to pull off the “critical detail” that we’d hoped for.
         So for Sony to squeeze in yet another two million pixels and up the resolution to 18.2-megapixels in the HX200V set alarm bells ringing. More megapixels spread across the same 1/2.3in sensor surface means light is spread more thinly, which can produce a poorer signal and, therefore, poorer image quality.
         However the HX200V’s images are similar, if not better-processed, than the previous model, in spite of the resolution increase. At the preview launch of the HX200V we were told that this latest sensor is twice as sensitive at the sensor level compared to the HX100V, thanks to a new design. It seems this little nugget of information seems to go some way to explain our findings.
         The HX200V’s images appear sharper compared to the HX100V’s shots, and any purple fringing – those "bleeding" purple edges around some subjects - are cleared up with greater attention.

              ISO sensitivity begins at ISO 100 and ranges up to ISO 12,800. High ISO settings can be useful in low-light conditions, where the signal is amplified and processed to produce a bright, accurate exposure. However, such amplification produces image noise which shows as white and/or coloured flecks throughout an image. In-camera processing attempts to remove such nasties, but in so doing softens and blurs detail and mutes true colour presence.
              The Sony’s ISO 100-200 settings are of good enough quality, while ISO 400-1600 progressively diminish in quality but still remain of use. ISO 3200 is significantly softer, ISO 6400 of little use and ISO 12,800 close to useless. We’d not recommend shooting above ISO 1600 in order to hold on to some of that all-important detail in your shots. Though, ideally it’s ISO 100 that’s the real winner.
              Like its predecessor there’s also in-camera controls for sharpness, colour saturation, contrast and noise reduction to add that extra lick of detail. It’s only possible to see the results off-camera though, so you’ll need to tweak with the settings and view files in full before you know what suits. Not many consumer cameras have such detailed menu settings, so kudos to Sony. It’s just a shame that there’s no raw file capture available.
             As with any superzoom camera, those looking for a DSLR-beater will need to consider the compromises of an all-in-one “big lens compact sensor” purchase. Casual users will be more than happy with the HX200V’s image quality, yet those looking to use full resolution files for critical detail prints might not get quite everything they want here.

But there’s more

As well as controls for brightness, colour and vividness, the HX200V also introduces a smattering of picture effects. These range from the casual, such as Toy or Pop, to the more extreme, including partial colour, that isolates red, green or blue within a scene and sets everything else to black and white (also known as colour popping).

And if that 30x optical zoom isn’t quite enough for you then the inclusion of Sony’s latest technology, dubbed “Clear Digital Zoom”, is able to digitally zoom from 30x up to 60x while upscaling the image so that the output size is still the same 18.2-megapixels in size. The algorithm that Sony uses to do this isn’t too crude either: a bit like Photoshop’s clever resampling and the HX200V’s shots retain enough detail. Not bad for what is, in essence, a digital zoom mode. There is a cut-off point where it’s a bit out of its depth, but this is digital zoom at its best and offers a quick and efficient way to gain a 1620mm equivalent.
The camera’s main mode dial is host to a variety of manual and auto modes, including the famed sweep panorama. Sony’s pioneering technology, which captures images in real time as the camera is rotated and stitches them together into a panoramic shot, is now available in its latest carnation: iSweep Panorama. This adds the ability to shoot a full 360° shot, or the usual 270° at a higher resolution than its predecessor.
Movie mode, too, is an eye-catching 1080p at 50 frames per second. Activated via a one-touch movie button on the rear of the camera, the settings and autofocus are automated, though it’s possible to use the 30x zoom in real time. It’s slow to progress through its zoom range, but this keeps the resulting footage smoother as a result. Autofocus can be a little slow to catch up compared to stills shooting, but it does a good job for the most part and the image stabilisation is excellent.

Verdict

              The HX200V takes Sony’s already decent superzoom formula and further improves the recipe.
Although we had anticipated that image quality would be a step down compared to its predecessor, the HX200V’s new 18.2-megapixel sensor delivers the goods. Sure the shots aren’t going to see off those from larger sensor cameras such as DSLRs, but they are sharp and well processed, even if no more standout compared to other compact cameras.
               Its the 30x zoom lens with its manual zoom/focus ring and zoom toggle combination that makes the HX200V what it is. Autofocus is fast and image stabilisation is also a winner. There are few moans to be had, though at £429 it is a pricey bit of kit – more expensive than its nearest competitors.
               The HX200V may be up against some other tip-top 30x zoom cameras but it more than holds its weight. This is one feature-packed superzoom that delivers across the board.

Guyz, in last few dayz the SONY HX200V price drops found at most of the places like Sony Store, Amazone etc..
It comes to $440 only, which is i think the more or less same price of Sony HX100V.
The price drop was expected from it's launch, as most of the people were disappointed by it's IQ at 1:1
But Video Quality is just so awesome, the 60p and AVCHD 1080 - Incomparable.. Just so awesome videos,

If you guyz have recently visited the SONY India's website, then you must have noticed that with all other lovable Sony gadgets a new update is there about the sony's High end Point and Shoot Camera SONY DSC-HX200V.

The HX200V is displayed on the Sony India's website with other new HX10V, HX20V and HX30V..
The line for this camera's they says "Incredible Zoom, Incredible details" with the Sony's Indian brand ambassador Dipica Padukon in some different Traditional dress [So different look for her - I like her in Tees and short skirts.. ha ha just kidding :) ]

But But But... It's just displayed on the Website, You guyz still need to wait, Coz' it's with the "Comming Soon" Tag....!!

Image Quality Review:

              All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 18 megapixel JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5Mb.

              The inherent beauty of any super zoom camera is the ability to choose from a wide range of framing options, and photograph a broad range of subjects, without having to take a single step forward or back. Unfortunately most new product releases appear to be about impressive specification lists rather than impressive performances. Fortunately for the 30x optical capacity of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V, it’s not just an exercise in numbers however. Here the entirety of the focal range is actually useful in that we were able to achieve sharp results consistently from shot to shot when shooting handheld at maximum telephoto - a rare thing indeed. The performance at the telephoto end of most competing models is distinctly soft.

            Conversely, at the extreme wideangle setting we did notice some slight fall-off towards the corners of the frame, though this is only visible if you’re looking for it and is subtle at best, as is the inevitable pixel fringing between areas of high contrast. Generally though, the HX200V acquits itself very well indeed, with bags of detail in every shot and good, even exposures too that manage to maintain both highlight and shadow detail. The result is that you will very rarely find yourself wanting to alter any of the results straight out of the camera in Photoshop or its ilk.

            For shooting in low light, this Sony of course offers the impressively broad light sensitivity range option of captures between ISO100 and ISO12800 at top whack. You’ll want to stick at ISO3200 or below however if you want to avoid the effects of vigorous processing to keep image noise well under control. However at ISO 6400 we’d offer that results are still perfectly usable, so it appears this pushing of the spec is advantageous to the user rather than just a number to stick on the box.

            The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is a super zoom camera that is actually not only a jack-of-all-trades, but also a master of most of them. Picture wise, there’s not a lot here to find fault with.

The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX200V's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Manual mode, which is great news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 4 seconds at ISO 100. I've included a 100% crop of the image to show what the quality is like.

Conclusion:

            Undoubtedly the biggest recommendation we have with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is that, by daylight, we were able to achieve sharp results shooting handheld with it with greater consistency than we have been able to achieve with pretty much any super zoom camera to date. The hand-held twilight mode selectable from within the scene modes also comes in very useful by night. Simply put, if you line up a trick-sy shot there is more chance of you actually pulling it off with this Sony, which many would agree is worth the admission price alone, even if it is a rather pricey £479.

          OK, so there’s no ability to shoot raw files here which will be a deal breaker for some, but to be honest the results from the HX200V's JPEGs didn’t give us much cause, if any, to find fault. Though it might satisfy the enthusiast looking for a portable means of gaining some extra poke in the lens department as well as the family user who would like a wealth of framing options at their fingertips, this is after all a consumer level camera, and has to be rated as such. Fortunately then impressions are more favourable than not.

         As an all in one with ‘DSLR lite’ style handling that really does offer most, if not all, of what you need - and delivers consistently high image quality - the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V takes some beating if a big zoom really is chief among your imaging requirements.

How to convert Sony HX200V AVCHD 1080p to Pro Res for Final Cut Pro

Here goes the step-by-step guide on how to Sony HX200V AVCHD 1080p files to Apple ProRes for FCP, then import the converted videos to FCP.

Step1: Import Sony HX200V AVCHD 1080p files to the top Sony HX200V 1080p MTS/M2TS files to Apple ProRes Converter for Mac.
Connect your Sony HX200V to your Apple with USB2.0. Launch the AVCHD to Apple ProRes Converter and then click the adding button to import your AVCHD 1080p MTS/M2TS files. You can tick the box in front of the file you want to convert.
Tip: If you have multiple 1080/60p MTS/M2TS files, you can select the “Merge into one” box to merge the files into one single file for FCP so that you can play these files without interruption.

Step 2: Select an output format for FCP and set the output folder.
Click on the “Format” and get the dropdown menu, then move you pointer to “Final Cut Pro”. Under the sub list are there a few formats which are all compatible with FCP. Here we recommend the Apple PreRes 422(HQ) if you give the priority to the quality of the converted videos. Then you can set the output folder by clicking “Browse” icon as you need.
Note: If you want the files to be in smaller size and make sure that your FCP has updated to 7.0.3 version or above, you can follow Final Cut Pro>Apple ProRes 422(*mov) option. If your files size is at SD levels, you are advised to choose Final Cut Pro>Apple ProRes 422(Proxy)(*mov), which is recommended for 480i/p and 576i/p shootings as well.

Step 3: Click “Settings” icon to adjust audio and video parameters.
Click the “Settings” icon and you will go into a new interface named “Profile Settings”. You can adjust codec, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channel in the interface according to your needs and optimize the output file quality.
Note: You’d better set the video frame rate as 30fps, video size as 1920*1080 to keep the best quality for editing in Final Cut Pro. If you want to have a smaller file size but keep the good quality, you can change the video size to 1440*1080.

Step 4: Start converting your Sony HX200V 1080p MTS/M2TS files to Apple ProRes for FCP.
Click the “Convert” button; it will transcode Sony HX200V AVCHD 1080p MTS/M2TS files to ProRes for FCP on Mac immediately. You can find the process in the “Conversion” interface.

When the AVCHD to ProRes conversion is 100% completed, you will be able to get the output files for FCP by clicking on “Import” button effortlessly. Now you can easily ingest the converted and/or merged Sony HX200V AVCHD 1080p MTS/M2TS files with 30fps to Final Cut Pro for editing with high quality without any trouble.

New SONY HX200V detailed review

We have posted many SONY HX200V Cyber-shot Camera review over here in this short period of time, with different tests and videos, Today i'm going to post another detail review for the new sony bridge camera Sony HX200V

The Sony HX100V was one of the top bridge cameras of 2011, alongside the Panasonic FZ150 and the Fuji HS20 EXR. Sony hasn't changed its winning formula too much in the updated Cyber-shot HX200V, then, using the same body and lens as the previous model but adding a new sensor. In fact, that's pretty much all that's new.

HANDLING:   [ 4-STAR ]
             If it ain't broke, don't fix it ... especially when it's already a very good bridge camera. In fact, Sony hasn't changed much in its updated bridge, and the HX200V is very similar indeed to the HX100V released last year. Keen-eyed readers will note that the mode-selection dial has changed colour—it's now black—and that the self-timer and continuous shooting buttons have been merged to make room for the new Auto mode settings (see inset). Otherwise, the camera bodies are identical, which means the HX200V offers the same excellent grip and high-quality build (in spite of the rather plastic finish) as the HX100V. All in all, it's a nice camera to use.

            The camera has the same multifunction control ring around the lens as seen in the HX100V, which can be used to control the zoom (you can otherwise use the standard zoom control around the shutter-release button) or for focusing in manual mode. Note that these are still the only two options available—you can't assign a choice of settings to the control ring like you can in the Canon S100, for example.

The screen hasn't changed either—it's the same 920,000-dot VGA display with wide viewing angles and good onscreen image quality. The LCD also flips out vertically so you can line up shots at waist height or over the top of your head. However, in the HX200V, the screen has been calibrated differently. While the gamma (grey scale) was a real problem in the previous model—washing light greys out to white—it's pretty much perfect in the HX200V, giving a very even grey scale. With its new settings, the screen has a slight blue overtone, but it's not much of a problem in reality, and colours are reproduced more accurately overall.

On the whole, the Sony HX200V is a pleasant and practical-to-use bridge camera. The only real let-downs are the low-grade viewfinder and a certain lack of advanced functions (there could be more customisable controls, for example, and there's still no RAW mode).

RESPONSIVENESS: [ 4-STAR ]

Against the clock, the HX200V proved a subtle but distinct improvement on the HX100V. The most notable change is the start-up time, as at 2.2 seconds, Sony has managed to shave off half a second. Although it's still a pretty bog-standard start-up time, it's actually not bad for a bridge, and allows Sony to catch up with Panasonic's model. For photo-to-photo turnaround too, the HX200V comes in neck and neck with Panasonic's FZ150.

The autofocus is on the better side of average, working in under half a second in good light and under a second in low light. As usual, the burst mode snaps ten frames in a second ... followed by several seconds of thumb-twiddling while the camera saves the shots to the memory card.

PICTURE QUALITY: [ 4-STAR ]

The HX200V uses the same lens as the HX100V, as well as a BSI CMOS sensor. In this model, however, resolution has been upped slightly to 18 Megapixels. This sensor has the highest pixel density we've seen yet in a compact camera, at 63 Mpx/cm².

You may remember that the arrival of 16-Megapixel BSI CMOS sensors in Sony's cameras was accompanied by some rather aggressive image processing, which mercilessly smoothed out zones of block colour to eradicate noise (thus wiping out finer texturing) and accentuating borders around details to make them stand out. While this proved a hit with point-and-shoot consumers and fans of flattering, read-to-print images, some true pros found the pictures over-processed and unnatural. As a result, Sony announced that it would be working on ways of improving the way textures in images are maintained and rendered in 2012 models.

The result is actually quite good. Texture from the background of the scene is preserved more effectively, and while the HX200V takes more grainy photos, the image looks more natural and less 'reconstituted' than those taken with its predecessor. Up to 1600 ISO, a good level of detail is maintained and pictures generally hold up well. At 3200 ISO, however, the edges start to look softer and heavy granularity is visible on 8" x 10" prints (20 x 27 cm). This setting is therefore probably best avoided, as are the 6400 ISO and 12800 ISO 'extended ISO' settings, obtained by combining several images taken successively in a low resolution then treated to 'intelligent' interpolation and rather heavy handed accentuation.

Optical quality is as expected. Upgrading to 18 Megapixels doesn't bring any real gain in fine detail but, on the whole, the results are good. While the edges of the frame aren't quite as sharp as the centre at wide-angle settings, things get better much quickly as you start to zoom. In fact, quality is incredibly consistent across the frame at 200 mm. A high level of precision is maintained up to 810 mm, although some chromatic aberration is still visible.

On the whole, the Panasonic FZ150 and Canon SX40 lenses do a slightly better job. It's only at the longest focal lengths, at which all three cameras do an excellent job, that the 50% higher resolution of the HX200V really brings a slight gain in detail. That said, some uses will still prefer competitor models, which effectively correct chromatic aberration. Similarly, some will prefer Panasonic's more natural approach to image processing, while others will prefer Sony's instantly printable results. Otherwise, you may want to pick the Canon as the best trade-off between the two!

VIDEO: [ 5-STAR ]

The HX200V has the same video modes as the HV100V. It therefore films Full HD—like most models at this price level—with a good level of sharpness and an image that's generally pleasant to watch. It's perhaps not quite as flattering as video filmed with the Canon model, but the dynamic range holds up well. It's also nice to see that you can set the video framerate at 25 or 50 frames per second in interlaced or progressive scan formats. Note that to use the 50p mode to the best of its ability, you'll need heavyweight memory cards and a powerful computer. However, you could argue that it's worth it—videos flow smoothly, giving a much better result than Canon's 24 frames per second video. Over to you to decide what suits you the best.

Sound quality is decent too. Voices and distinct noises are rendered well, and there's an audible stereo effect—even if it's a little more marked in the SX40. The only drawback is that the buzzing of the zoom motor can still be heard slightly in very quiet scenes. This, however, is soon masked by any other noise.

            Image quality test been done with the Sony Cyber-shot HX200V camera..
            The Sony Cyber-shot HX200V allows you to set ISO in 1/3 step increments, but we’re posting samples from just the ‘main’ settings for easy and concise reference.

           The Sony Cyber-shot HX200V produces some fairly detailed and clean photos at lower ISO settings. Photos are detailed at ISO 100, as you can see from the surface texture on the green part of our test chart. The camera does some processing on photos at ISO 200 and ISO 400, but it’s minor and keeps photos clean and free of noise. You could make huge prints out of photos at these settings, especially with the Sony HX200V’s high resolution of 18 megapixels.

At ISO 800, photos start to look slightly grainy and there is a hint of color smudging but nothing too noticeable to be concerned about. Photos taken at this setting will still make great large prints and display as wallpaper on your computer or tablet. Photos at ISO 1600 lose some saturation and become slightly muddy looking (some detail is lost), which restricts uses to smaller prints and display. At ISO 3200, this becomes even more noticeable and I wouldn’t recommend using this setting unless you’re fine with 4 x 6 prints or tiny phone wallpaper.

The Sony Cyber-shot HX200V has 2 ISO ‘boost’ settings which quickly takes a string of six photos at ISO 6400 or ISO 12800 and combines them together into a single photo to reduce noise and improve quality. These two settings cannot be used in continuous shooting mode since the camera already has to take multiple shots and combine them. Unfortunately, ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 are not usable at all since they look very muddy with poor color saturation and detail levels.

The Sony Cyber-shot HX200V shows just a slight amount of lens distortion in its photos and minor color fringing (chromatic aberration) in high contrast scenes. For most part, neither of those two will pose problems or even be noticeable in your photos unless you inspect them really closely. The Sony Cyber-shot HX200V also displays fairly good corner sharpness, especially considering it has a 30X zoom lens.

Julia Khoo shares her first experience with the Sony HX200V, let's listen her story in her way..!!
The following food pics were shot in full auto Scene Selection “Gourmet” mode.
I snapped this chicken rice lunch with just my right hand holding the camera; my left hand was holding baby who was sitting in my lap.

Same for this chai tow kway (fried radish cake) dish – photo was snapped with just one hand.

Using my thumb, I even managed to easily zoom in with the zoom dial. No problem focusing on the close-up details at all — yay! And doesn’t this chai tow kway look absolutely yummy?

Here are some colorful mini ang ku kueh. For this pic, I only adjusted the exposure. The colors turned out to be vivid and saturated without any touching up.

This economic fried bee hoon breakfast was shot indoors under florescent lighting (auto white balance). Colors were not as warm or saturated but still sufficiently vivid.

Those who have taken pictures of animals will know how frustrating it is, because animals won’t stay still and pose for you! That’s when the Pet mode in Scene Selection comes in handy.
The greatest feature of the HX200V is its 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor (the highest resolution sensor currently offered in the mainstream “point and shoot” market) and a massive 30x optical/60x Clear Image Zoom, which promises incredible close-ups and amazing clarity.

Sony Cyber-shot HX200V Review full resolution images.

Sony's new Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V ultrazoom is but one of five new "H" series models announced by Sony on February 27 which became available on the market in March. In addition to the entry-level H90 model, there are also HX10, HX20, and HX30 models along with the HX200V that is the subject of this review. While the H90 carries a 16.1 megapixel sensor, the other four models all share an 18.2 megapixel “Exmor R” CMOS sensor and advanced BIONZ processor that, among other things, is said to produce "blazingly fast" autofocus acquisition times in both good and dim lighting conditions. If you're thinking to yourself that 18.2 megapixels in a compact digital point-and-shoot sounds like a lot, you'd be right - Sony is touting these four models as possessing "the highest resolution sensor currently offered in the mainstream point-and-shoot market."

The HX10 features a 16x optical zoom while the HX20 and 30 both carry 20x versions; these three cameras all resemble the pretty much standard compact digital layout of a rectangular, box-of- cigarettes-sized body with a slightly protruding lens base at the front of the camera. The subject of this first look, the HX200, packs a 30x optical zoom in the "mini DSLR" configuration that seems popular with super zooms exceeding 20x.

That 30x zoom on the Sony HX200V is a Carl Zeiss design, covers the 29 to 870mm focal range (in 35mm equivalents) and features maximum apertures of f/2.8 and f/5.6 at wide-angle and telephoto, respectively. Here's a look at both ends of that zoom.

And here's a look at one of our local surfers at telephoto along with another surfer shot with my Nikon D300S and 600mm telephoto (900mm in 35mm equivalent). Tripod and JPEG fine processing were used in both cases with in-camera sharpening maxed in both cameras; contrast maxed in the Sony and increased one step in the Nikon.

There's probably not much question in your mind which is which (and we won't keep you guessing - the top image is from the HX200V), but keep in mind that the Sony goes for $480 while the D300S is an $1800 body and that fast 600mm will set you back a little over $10,000. Frankly, I was very impressed with image quality the HX200 produced shooting bursts of the surfers - it's probably the best continuous shooting image quality I've seen out of an ultrazoom.

The camera has an electronic viewfinder and built-in flash, offers automatic and scene shooting modes in addition to full manual controls, along with Sony's excellent panorama shooting feature. The 3.0-inch LCD monitor has a 921,000 dot composition and articulates through a range of motion. Full 1080 HD video is available via one touch shooting.

                The camera comes with a basic user's manual that is pretty basic, and Sony requires you to go to their website to download a complete user's manual. Initially I found some menus and controls highly intuitive, while other aspects of camera operation completely eluded me. Case in point: after switching to aperture priority I attempted to locate the ISO setting control. Couldn't find one on either the camera exterior or in the various menus, and the basic user's manual was of no help. Before giving up and resorting to downloading the complete manual I noticed that while sifting through various menus there is an in-camera guide that offers a "keyword" menu with alphabetical selections of various features and functions; looking up "ISO" provided the information I needed to set ISO manually. Kind of a nice feature to have until you get the hang of the camera, since the basic user’s manual doesn't cover a lot of ground with regards the operations of the HX200.

                Auto focus acquisition is as advertised, so far – quick in good conditions, and while a bit slower in dim light still quite quick. Shutter lag seems to be fairly quick as well and thus far the camera has proved to be pleasant to shoot, focusing quickly and taking the shot when you press the shutter. I shot two short clips of video and image quality is very good on both. Still image quality on non-moving subjects has been impressive so far.

                When I first heard of the 18.2 megapixels on this camera my initial reaction was to look up the specifications for the sensor size – it proved to be a 1/2.3 inch, a decidedly point-and-shoot size carrying a more DSLR-like resolution. But upon reading the fine print, it turns out this sensor is one of the backside illumination variety which move circuitry from the sensor face to its back, providing an unimpeded path for light to the pixels on the sensor surface. This sensor design combined with the latest generation processing technology gives rise to the hope that Sony isn't asking too much from their Exmor R sensor.
We've barely begun to scratch the surface with the HX200V review and giving ISO performance a good, hard look will be part of the process. Thus far, under fairly benign conditions the HX200V has acquitted itself well – our complete review will be along in a couple weeks and tell us if good first impressions have become lasting ones.
