Greg i'm a australian teacher but i teach in middle east Jordan - Amman , i watched your interview , YES 21 century learning requare learning circles as a model of learning.
24/7/11 acces to learning content and equpment.
Schools are places to come and go when students find to be most productive to be there.
Team teaching is the norm for 21 century teaching its finish with one man show in teaching.
The dinamic of 21 century life in general and particular is not within the time frame of 9 to 5. life runs on 24hours and contnoues interaction.
Wheter we like it or not but that is the reality.

As someone who started grown-up life as a visual artist, art teacher, and creativity researcher, I think that it is telling that I was attracted to computer programming (on Commodore PET and Apple II equipment) because I felt very much the same when programming as when making art with more traditional tools. Back in those early 80's days, systems were handicapped; there were neither spreadsheets nor word processors for small computers and, blessedly, Powerpoint was not even a gleam in Microsoft's eye. However, character graphics and Gee-Whiz BASIC were all that we needed to create an experience not that much different from easel painting.

Later, after I became a computer science teacher, I was delighted to find that the atmosphere in my lab strongly resembled that in my best art classes, with kids making and judging their own and each others' work... exercising mental muscles that don't often get much use in other parts of traditional schools.

With all the existing media out there to sort through, the "Information and Media Literacy Skills—Analyzing, accessing, managing, integrating, evaluating, and creating information in a variety of forms and media" can be quite time consuming for already time-strapped educators.

Sites like www.SchoolWAXtv.com, which contain only educational video resources, help teachers incorporate this skill into the classroom.

Video sharing sites like this can help the Arts reach larger audiences when they record and upload their performances and concerts. Technology and the Arts can co-exist in a mutually beneficial world.

I will quote a comment I posted on a google group hosted by the American Embassy in Sudan for English language teachers. I wrote:
Salam Everyone first I would like to thank the American Embassy for
the DVC about the use of technology as a tool for teaching English. The quotation of Winston Churchill is really true if we look back in the past we will be able to see the future . What I feel is that as university teachers we should equip our students with tools they need in their future. We shouldn't teach in the way our own teachers taught
us 14 years ago because we are in different times. We are caught in
the middle between two generations. The first is our teachers who lived most of their lives without the internet and our students who are living in the age of mobile technology . We have to take a decision to which generation we want to stick to. I really had great teachers who taught me most of what I know, they are a great generation. But we have a responsibilities towards our students. We have to equip them for a time which we may not live to see. I would like to invite you all to read an article written by Vance Stevens an American who works in Abu Dhabi entitled "New Learning for
Sustainability in the Arab Region Motivating Change: New Learning in

Using the Internet is crucial in the learning process for most if not all of today's students. The business world at large is using the Intrenet for applications and most of it's business processes as well as a mean sof communication and education. To deny our students access to the Internet would be putting them behind in thsi world of online business and learning. I am a firm beleiver in the concept of "Learn by doing". The internet is a valuable tool in teaching students to do their own investigation and assessmnets.

As far as filtering is concerned, I don't think there is much filtering going on throughout the Internet - the society we live in is well grounded in it's rights to free speech. That is not to say that we should not filter certain types of information from the eyes of youngsters. I beleive we do have an obligation to our students and their parents to keep their surfing restricted to age appropriate information witin the schools.

You are right in that many are thinking that 21st century skills is all about technology. I am concerned that Art, Drama, Music and such will fall by the wayside as we strive to "compete" with China and India economically.

The arts are vital to the development of these 21st century skills. Look at the list and nearly all these skills are developed in the act of putting on a play, collaborating in a musical ensemble or creating an artwork from a collection of inert materials.
Elliot Eisner's "The Arts and the Creation of Mind" outlines 10 lessons the arts teach that match up exceedingly well with the afrementioned skills. The danger is thinking that innovation and development of these skills will only happen through technology. The skills outlined as necessary in the 21st century are already being taught in the very classrooms that are fighting for their survival in many schools -namely the arts classes.

Thanks Gary, always good to have feedback. Last time I posted about ZoHo, Arvind (who works for them) commented pretty quickly. Lets hope they can come to my aid without too much drama. I'd hate to see a great idea like this languish due to lack of support.

I posted the google widget on my main page, so I guess I'll see what comes of it. Perhaps if i embedded the zoho poll in my sidebar? hmmmm

It all gets down to having the time doesnt it.
