Two people have been killed. Investigation, like I said, is ongoing and out of the so called lunatics, two of them have
confessed to be looking for human body parts, but they are not yet related to the Soka incident.

A secret Bible in which Jesus is believed to predict the coming of the Prophet Muhammad to Earth has sparked serious interest from the Vatican.

Pope Benedict XVI is claimed to want to see the 1,500-year-old book, which many say is the Gospel of Barnabas, that has been hidden by the Turkish state for the last 12 years.

The £14million handwritten gold lettered tome, penned in Jesus' native Aramaic language, is said to contain his early teachings and a prediction of the Prophet's coming.

The leather-bound text, written on animal hide, was discovered by Turkish police during an anti-smuggling operation in 2000.

It was closely guarded until 2010, when it was finally handed over to the Ankara Ethnography Museum, and will soon be put back on public display following a minor restoration.

A photocopy of a single page from the handwritten ancient manuscript is thought to be worth £1.5million.

Turkish culture and tourism minister Ertugrul Gunay said the book could be an authentic version of the Gospel, which was suppressed by the Christian Church for its strong parallels with the Islamic view of Jesus.

He also said the Vatican had made an official request to see the scripture - a controversial text which Muslims claim is an addition to the original gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John.

In line with Islamic belief, the Gospel treats Jesus as a human being and not a God.

It rejects the ideas of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion and reveals that Jesus predicted the coming of the Prophet Muhammad.

In one version of the gospel, he is said to have told a priest: 'How shall the Messiah be called? Muhammad is his blessed name'.

And in another Jesus denied being the Messiah, claiming that he or she would be Ishmaelite, the term used for an Arab.

Despite the interest in the newly re-discovered book, some believe it is a fake and only dates back to the 16th century.

The oldest copies of the book date back to that time, and are written in Spanish and Italian.

Protestant pastor İhsan Özbek said it was unlikely to be authentic.

This is because St Barnabas lived in the first century and was one of the Apostles of Jesus, in contrast to this version which is said to come from the fifth or sixth century.

He told the Today Zaman newspaper: 'The copy in Ankara might have been written by one of the followers of St Barnabas.

'Since there is around 500 years in between St Barnabas and the writing of the Bible copy, Muslims may be disappointed to see that this copy does not include things they would like to see.

'It might have no relation with the content of the Gospel of Barnabas.'

Theology professor Ömer Faruk Harman said a scientific scan of the bible may be the only way to reveal how old it really is.

A previously unheard Michael Jackson track set to be released on the singer's forthcoming posthumous album is about child abuse.

The new song, entitled Do You Know Where Your Children Are, tells the story of a 12-year-old girl who runs away from her abusive stepfather and turns to prostitution.

It is one of eight tracks recorded by the singer before his death in June 2009 at the age of 50 which will feature on the new album Xscape, set to be released in May.

n one of the song's verses Jackson sings: 'She wrote that she is tired of step-daddy using her/Saying that he’ll buy her things, while sexually abusing her,' according to the Daily Mirror.

According to leaked lyrics from the chorus, the song continues: 'Do you know where your children are? Because it's now twelve o'clock/If they're somewhere out on the street just imagine how scared they are.'

The track includes the line: 'Save me (from this living hell) Save me (cause I don't wanna know)', and fans of Jackson have speculated that it was written in response to abuse claims made against the singer.

In the mid 1990s Jackson was accused of sexual abuse by the family of a 13-year-old boy Jordan Chandler.

The case was settled out of court for about $25 million and no formal charges were brought against the singer.

In 2005, Jackson was tried and acquitted of further child sexual abuse allegations and several other charges after a jury in Santa Maria, California, found him not guilty on all counts.

Dancer Wade Robson is suing Jackson's estate after claiming that he suffered sexual abuse over several years at the hands of The King Of Pop.

In 2005, Robson was a key witness who helped clear Jackson of molestation charges. However, he has since claimed that he gave the favorable testimony after 'brainwashing' by the singer.

A hearing is due to take place in June.

The new record, Xscape, comprises of a collection of tracks recorded before the singer's death and 'contemporised' by Epic Records boss L.A. Reid and a team of producers, including Timbaland.

Jackson's estate provided Reid with unlimited access to four decades worth of material by the singer, resulting in the new album, due to be released on May 13.

'Michael left behind some musical performances that we take great pride in presenting through the vision of music producers that he either worked directly with or expressed strong desire to work with,' said Reid.

'We are extremely proud and honored to present this music to the world.'

The name XSCAPE is a nod to the late singer's favoured naming process of picking one of his songs to name his record after, in this case the title track which was written and originally produced by Jackson and Rodney Jerkins.

A Deluxe Edition of the record will also be released which will include all of the sourced Michael Jackson recordings in their original form.

Jackson's last studio album was his 10th and final record Invincible, which was released in 2001 and featured singles You Rock My World, Cry and Butterflies.

30 killed in Maiduguri Suicide Bombing

This year’s Eid Malud Festival was marred in Maiduguri, Borno State by a bomb blast at the busy Post Office Roundabout in Maiduguri, Borno State on Tuesday.A lone suicide bomber, believed to be a member of the Islamist militant sect, Boko Haram, carried out the attack which eye witnesses said left no fewer than 30 people dead and about 50 others injured.

The attack which occurred at about seven hours after eight people died in an accident on the Osara-Okene Express Road, Kogi State, sparked protests by youths, who alleged that it was traceable to politicians.

The angry youths damaged former governor Ali Modu Sheriff’s office on Kashim Imam Way before they left for the Government Reservation Area where they also torched a building belonging to him.

It was gathered that the former governor, who was still in the state as of the time the explosion occurred, was hurriedly driven to the Maiduguri Airport en route for Abuja. He was said to have been escorted by a well armed police team.

Soldiers fired shots into the air to disperse the youths before cordoning off the roads around the blast site and the GRA. Investigation, however, revealed that Improvised Explosive Devices were wired to a vehicle and detonated at the roundabout which also leads to the Monday Market, the busiest market in the troubled city.

There were however conflicting reports on how the lone suicide bomber arrived and detonated IEDs close to a roadblock mounted by the military near the roundabout.

While the spokesman for the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army Maiduguri, Col. Mohammed Dole, said the bomber drove a Honda car, Reuters said he arrived at the area in a tricycle laden with IEDs.

Dole, who blamed the attack on Boko Haram, said, “At about 14:13 hours on Tuesday, January 14, a Honda car laden with IEDs exploded near the Post Office area in Maiduguri metropolis. Members of the frustrated Boko Haram terrorists are suspected to be behind the bomb explosion.

“Many deaths and injuries were recorded and 10 vehicles and five tricycles are confirmed damaged and one suspect is arrested. This incident happened after a long period of relative peace in Maiduguri and environs.”

But the state Police Commissioner, Lawan Tanko, told Reuters that his men counted 17 bodies as of 2pm on Tuesday.

“My men counted 17 dead persons as of 2pm and they are still counting. I instructed my men to go to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri to verify if there are others,” Tanko added.

Tanko confirmed that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber who drove a firewood seller truck and detonated a bomb in the middle of the road.

Tanko, who claimed that only five people were injured, added that security operatives were immediately sent to public buildings to prevent attacks on them by the rampaging youths.

A journalist working at the state television office, Abba Kankami, also told the British news agency that he counted 29 dead bodies.

“The attack happened just behind the fence of my office. I counted 29 bodies, including two kids and a mother. Lots of others seriously injured,” he said.

However, health workers claimed that 30 bodies were deposited at different hospital mortuaries in the city. They added that 50 injured persons were also brought in.

Another eyewitness, Aisha Hassan, said she saw two boys whose bodies were cut into pieces.

Hassan, who added that two cars immediately caught fire when the explosion happened, said, “I ran away because there was too much blood.”

A source told one of our correspondents that operatives who rushed to the scene of the blast which occurred at about 1.30pm, evacuated the injured and the dead to the hospitals.

When contacted, the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, also confirmed that security operatives had arrested a suspected insurgent in relation to the explosion.

He said the suspect was already assisting a team investigating the incident.

The state Governor, Kashim Shettima, condemned the blast, saying it was regrettable it happened at a time people were enjoying the return of peace to Maiduguri.

In a statement by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, Shettima expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

The statement reads in part, “He (governor) has directed the security to carry out a full scale investigation into the bomb explosion which resulted in the unfortunate youths’ rampage that led to the breakdown of law and order.

“The governor also condemned the uprisings in the last three days in the state capital which he described as unfortunate even though avoidable.”

He also said that the governor had directed the Ministry of Health to ensure that all the injured received proper medical attention.

The statement added that the governor had met with the National Security Adviser in Abuja on issues of security of lives and property in Borno State.

The governor appealed to all the residents of the state to remain law abiding and reminded them that peace was a collective duty of all.

In Kogi State, an accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus, a trailer and a truck claimed the lives of eight people on the Osara-Okene Express Road at about 6.30am on Tuesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Command, Mr. Redengha Tampa, said the trailer collided with the truck and the bus.

All the dead were said to be the bus passengers. Two other occupants of the bus, who sustained injuries, were rushed to Abobo Clinic, Itakpe, for treatment.

The corpses were taken to the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.

Breaking News: President Jonathan Signs Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into Law

In spite of protests from some countries, groups and activists President Goodluck Jonathan has signed into law the Bill which outlaws same s*x marriage.

The assent to the bill was devoid of fanfare to reduce diplomatic tension, which it may likely attract.

Some foreign embassies were shocked by the development leading to ‘curious’ inquiries from the Federal Government. Despite the inquiries, the Federal Government said there was no going back.

The signed bill says the gays, lesbians in Nigeria will risk a 14-year jail term if they do not retrace their steps and renounce such marriage.

Also, any person who operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations directly or indirectly will earn 10-year imprisonment. Those who administer witness, abet or aid the solemnisation of a same s*x marriage are going to bag 10-year jail term.

The Senate previously passed the bill in November 2011. Lawmakers in Nigeria’s house of representatives affirmed the decision by the Senate on May 29, 2013.
The President assented to the Act last week, on January 7, 2014, but the details on this action have just leaked the web.

    “I certify that this Bill has been carefully compared by me with the decision reached by the National Assembly and found by me to be true and correct decision of the Houses and is in accordance with the provisions of the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. I assent,” The assent note read.

    “The President has signed the Same s*x Marriage (Prohibition) Bill into law. This has foreclosed any pressure on President Jonathan not to assent to the bill.

    “We received inquiries from some foreign embassies on why the bill was signed into law. But we told them that our cultural values do not tolerate same s*x marriage.

    “Also, we made it clear that since most Nigerians were opposed to the bill, the parliament acted in line with the wish of the majority. We are in a democratic setting, the President has no choice than to bow to the wish of the people.

    “These embassies were shocked but there is no going back. We hope they will also abide by the decision of Nigerians,” a source close the President revealed.

According to some abstracts, obtained by The Nation, the Act reads:

    “A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same s*x: (a) is prohibited in Nigeria; and (b) shall not be recognized as entitled to the benefits of a valid marriage.

The Act also stipulates the volume of the sanctions awaiting the violators of the new law.

    “A person who enters into a same s*x marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.

    “A person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations directly or indirectly makes public show of dame s*x amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment.

    “A person or group of persons who administers, witnesses, abets or aids the solemnization of a same s*x marriage or civil union of supports the registration, operation and sustenance of gay clubs, societies, organizations, processions or meetings in Nigeria commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 10 years imprisonment.

“The High Court of a State or of the Federal Capital Territory shall have jurisdiction to entertain matters raiding from the breach of the provisions of this Act.”

Boko Haram Trying To Wipe Out Christianity From Borno – Lawmaker

A group of terrorists yesterday launched a fresh attack on Sabon Gari village in Borno State, killing eight persons and inflicting severe injuries on others.

It was gathered that the gunmen stormed the village in the night and opened fire on residents before they fled without being arrested.

This came just four days after gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect burnt down a church and the country home of a serving member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Biye, in Gwoza town in the state.

Biye was quoted to have accused the Islamist sect of a conceited effort to wipe out Christianity from the state.

He alleged that since the beginning of the endless Boko Haram attacks, about 200 churches have been razed down completely, leaving only about eight churches in the whole of Gwoza council, which is a Christian-dominated area.

On January 8 this year, it was reported that eight gunmen stormed the lawmaker’s village which is a Christian-dominated community at about 8p.m., carting away about 70 domestic animals before setting the buildings ablaze.

A consignment of sorghum, which was meant for distribution to people of the community was also said to have been burnt at Biye’s house.

They also burnt 30,000 pieces of exercise books, 30,000 packets of pen, sewing machines, generating pump machines, 30,000 packets of chalk, among others which he bought at the cost over N38 million for distribution to schools and people in his constituency.

The lawmaker, who is the only Christian House member from Borno State, lamented that since he was elected by the people of his constituency, there had been daily attacks targeted at Christian communities in Gwoza, Chibok and Damboa Local Government Areas, a situation that forced him to have no option than to stop visiting his people, including his family members for the past two years.

Biye, who said no life was lost in the house, however, expressed disappointment over what he described as the “non-challant attitude” of security operatives to secure his constituency which is one of the worst hit by Boko Haram crisis.

He revealed that prior to the attack on his house by the insurgents last week, he had earlier alerted the security authorities that there was a purported plan by terrorists to attack his village, but all plea to the security authorities to deploy its men to the area felt on deaf ears.

“What is happening in my constituency is very unfortunate, people are being killed by terrorists on daily basis, churches are being burnt, and if people like my Honourable self, who is also a member House Committee on Army will alert military authorities that based on intelligent report my village will be under attack by terrorists, and nothing was done to secure the area, then it is unfortunate, because an ordinary citizen of this country, especially those from volatile areas are no longer safe or protected by our security outfit,” he said.

“As I am talking to you now, I have spent over two years without going to see my people because I am no longer safe, all my projects which was aimed at alleviating the economic hardship of my people have been destroyed’ there was a time I sent my contractors to construct a health centre in Gwoza town, when they dug the foundation, a day after, some Boko Haram elements went and buried everything,” he lamented.

Source – In what may come as a big surprise to most people, no fewer than 15 persons recently returned certificates issued to them by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). They said they had to give up the certificates because they cheated during the examination, and now as Born Again Christians, they could not live with “the sin.”

Some individuals, Saturday Sun gathered, had approached WAEC through letters seeking restitution after they had confessed how they dubiously acquired their certificates when they wrote the examinations at various periods.

The council wrote back to them, stating that what they were expected to do was to return the certificates awarded in line with the rules and regulations guiding the conduct of the examinations. However, only few responded, including a holder of Teachers’ Grade 11 certificate.

It was learnt that those who complied with the directive returned their certificates to various WAEC offices nationwide and the council took their case to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC), which, at its 55th meeting in Lagos, cancelled the returned 15 certificates.
According to the council’s letter to NEC, “the listed candidates, in their letters of restitution, confessed that they were involved in various forms of examination malpractices in various years as indicated against their numbers. They have returned the original certificates issued to them.’’

The returned certificates by the Born Again Christians were for both the May/June (school exam) and November/December (private candidate) West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A breakdown of the year the examinations were taken revealed that the oldest dates back to June 1983 with certificate no SG 288999. Next is June 1990 (RS0680084c), June 1992 (NGSS 0994156), June 1995 (NGSS0265147) and December 1995 (NGSP 0169397), December 1996 (NGSP 0575264), December 2000 (NGWASSCP 038771), June 2001 (NGWASSCS 2451037).

Others are June 2002, two certificates with NGWASSCP 4100224 and NGWASSCS 3894794 were returned and cancelled, June 2003 (NGWASSCS 5009313), June 2006 two born again Christian returned certificates with NGWASSCP 7747466 and NGWASSCS 8423755, December 2008 (NGWASSCP 05790031) and June 2010 NGWASSCP 13327157.

There are several Verses in the Bible to support restitution, which conform to what the 15 Born Again Christians did by confessing their sins and sought restitution from WAEC. In 1 John 1:9 says: “If we confess our sins, the is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness’’.
While Numbers 5:6-7 says ’’When a man or woman commits any of the sins that people commit by breaking faith with the Lord, and that person realizes his guilt, he shall confess his sin that he has committed. And he shall make full restitution for his wrong’’. Efforts to get the names, and perhaps pictures, of the 15 persons were abortive, as WAEC officials said it would amount to violation of the rights of the individuals involved and that of their (officials) ethics.

In a related development, the N55th and 56th NEC meeting of WAEC has hammered 493 candidates who sat for both the May/June and November/December WASSCE by ordering the cancellation of their certificates/result slips taken at various periods.

A document available to Saturday Sun reads partly: “The under listed candidates were confirmed to have been impersonated in the various examinations and years indicated against them. The result slips/certificates have been returned by the Zonal/Branch Offices concerned to the Post Examinations Department for cancellation.’’

A breakdown of the statistics revealed that at the 55th NEC meeting (result slips and certificates of impersonators in previous GCE/SSC/ WASSC examinations), no fewer than 241 candidates were sanctioned while at their 56th deliberation (result slips and certificates of impersonators in previous May/June and November/December WASSC examinations), a total of 252 candidates had their certificates cancelled according to the rules and regulations guiding the conductor of WAEC exams.

A remarkable thing which Saturday Sun noted in the 55th NEC meeting decision was that the 241 cancelled certificates involved private candidates who wrote either the Nov/Dec GCE or WASSCE. Thus confirming stakeholders’ position that exam fraud is more rampart during the private candidate examinations.

A breakdown of the 241 cancelled certificates revealed that the highest number occurred in 1998 (34), followed by 1999 and 2001 with 26 certificates each. In 2000, it had 24, 1997 (23), 1995 (22), 2002 (19), 1994 and 1996 each had 15, 2003 (14), 1993 (12), 1987 (3), 2005 (2) while 1985, 1986, 1991, 2006, 2007 and 2009 had one cancelled certificate each.

For the 56th NEC decision, again statistics from the document indicate that majority of the 252 candidates whose certificates were cancelled sat for the Nov/Dec WASSCE (240) while 12 others wrote the May/June WASSCE.

Detail breakdown of the 252 cancelled certificates at the 56th NEC meeting showed that 2009 recorded the highest number with 33, 2002 (26), 2007 (24), 2001 (20), 2008 and 2010 had 18 each, 2000 (17), 2004 (14), 1999, 2003 and 2006 had 13 each, 2011 (10), 1995 (eight), 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2005 recorded four cancelled certificates each, 1993 and 1997 produced two each and one in 1989.

Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention. And because of the necessity in our community, that's why I came into this particular role."

Abdulah, who says he told his parents he was gay at age 15, converted to Islam at the age of 33 and went on to study the religion in Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Asked what was his first spiritual act as an Imam, Abdulahi says it was the funeral for a gay Muslim who had died of AIDS.

"They had contacted a number of imams, and no one would go and provide him his janazah services. This pained me. I believe every person, no matter if I disagree with you or not, you have the right as a Muslim to have the proper spiritual rites and rituals provided for you. And whoever judges you, that will be Allah's decision, not me. The beautiful thing about God is that when you change your attitude, and say, 'God, I need some help,' and mean it sincerely, God is always there for you,”

Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has laid the blame of the present insecurity and other associated challenges afflicting the north squarely at the feet of the region itself.

The Sultan who is also the president, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and president-general of the Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) maintained that dialogue with any aggrieved party will always remain a better option than violence or force.

He said though traditional and religious leaders have played their parts, they were not relenting in their efforts until the challenges are permanently solved.

He, however, lamented the inability of the relevant government authorities to implement a series of excellent recommendations that will help to address the challenges.

The meeting of the Northern Governors Peace and Reconciliation Committee was attended by the Sultan and the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

“Let us sit and freely talk and articulate positions that will bring us out of the quagmire we have found ourselves in. it is important that the religious and traditional rulers from our various states sit together so that each and every one of us will talk freely,” the Sultan said.

He continued, “Whatever is happening in the North is our own doing, because we did not do what we were supposed to do. And since we know that, we have to solve our problems ourselves. So, I think, it is not a bad idea that the committee was set up.

“We wrote a memo of about nine pages or thereabouts covering various issues affecting the country and the north in particular to the then acting president and now President Goodluck Jonathan. It was at the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) where we suggested solutions to the problems.

“Northern Council of Traditional Rulers also met and proposed solutions to the problems of the north to the governors, but we don’t know what happened to the recommendations at the various authorities.

“If our recommendations had been implemented, we would have been singing a different tune ion handling the challenges.”

On insinuations being made in some quarters about the country being Islamized, the Sultan said no person can either Islamize or Christianize the country.

“If anyone thinks he can Islamize or Christianize the country, he is dreaming.”

He also stated that politicians must have the fear of God in whatever they do. “If they want to solve the problem of this country, they will do so because they have the resources.”

“There is little religious leaders can do without the support of the constitutional right to do certain things, but we must always watch our utterances and in making comments we cannot substantiate.”

On his own part, John Cardinal Onaiyekan attributed the security challenges facing the north and the country in general to the high level of poverty in the region and country.

He also added that another aspect of the problem was associated to religion. He said that the bad image of the country has spread in the outside world and there was a need for the stakeholders to address the issue with the view to ending the problems permanently.

He said Christianity and Islam should not be seen as an accident of history, but as God’s design and it cannot be changed by anyone. He added that the main problem was bad governance and once that is tackled head-on, all other problems will be tackled too.

Earlier, in their opening remarks, the chairman of the committee, Ambassador Zakari Ibrahim and a committee member, Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, expressed the committee’s commitment to discharging its responsibilities with all fairness.

Freedom fighter, prisoner, moral compass and South Africa's symbol of the struggle against racial oppression.

That was Nelson Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid.

He died Thursday night at age 95.

His message of reconciliation, not vengeance, inspired the world after he negotiated a peaceful end to segregation and urged forgiveness for the white government that imprisoned him.

"As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison," Mandela said after he was freed in 1990.

Mandela, a former president, battled health issues in recent years, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

"Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father," South African President Jacob Zuma said. "What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human. We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."

His U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, echoed the same sentiment.

"We've lost one of the most influential, courageous and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth," Obama said. "He no longer belongs to us -- he belongs to the ages."

A hero to blacks and whitesMandela became the nation's conscience as it healed from the scars of apartheid.

His defiance of white minority rule and long incarceration for fighting against segregation focused the world's attention on apartheid, the legalized racial segregation enforced by the South African government until 1994.

In his lifetime, he was a man of complexities. He went from a militant freedom fighter, to a prisoner, to a unifying figure, to an elder statesman.

Years after his 1999 retirement from the presidency, Mandela was considered the ideal head of state. He became a yardstick for African leaders, who consistently fell short when measured against him.

Warm, lanky and charismatic in his silk, earth-toned dashikis, he was quick to admit to his shortcomings, endearing him further in a culture in which leaders rarely do.

His steely gaze disarmed opponents. So did his flashy smile.

Former South African President F.W. de Klerk, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Mandela in 1993 for transitioning the nation from a system of racial segregation, described their first meeting.

"I had read, of course, everything I could read about him beforehand. I was well-briefed," he said.

"I was impressed, however, by how tall he was. By the ramrod straightness of his stature, and realized that this is a very special man. He had an aura around him. He's truly a very dignified and a very admirable person."

For many South Africans, he was simply Madiba, his traditional clan name. Others affectionately called him Tata, the word for father in his Xhosa tribe.

A nation on edge

Mandela last appeared in public during the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa. His absences from the limelight and frequent hospitalizations left the nation on edge, prompting Zuma to reassure citizens every time he fell sick.

"Mandela is woven into the fabric of the country and the world," said Ayo Johnson, director of Viewpoint Africa, which sells content about the continent to media outlets.

When he was around, South Africans had faith that their leaders would live up to the nation's ideals, according to Johnson.

"He was a father figure, elder statesman and global ambassador," Johnson said. "He was the guarantee, almost like an insurance policy, that South Africa's young democracy and its leaders will pursue the nation's best interests."

There are telling nuggets of Mandela's character in the many autobiographies about him.

An unmovable stubbornness. A quick, easy smile. An even quicker frown when accosted with a discussion he wanted no part of.

War averted

Despite chronic political violence before the vote that put him in office in 1994, South Africa avoided a full-fledged civil war in its transition from apartheid to multiparty democracy. The peace was due in large part to the leadership and vision of Mandela and de Klerk.

"We were expected by the world to self-destruct in the bloodiest civil war along racial grounds," Mandela said during a 2004 celebration to mark a decade of democracy in South Africa.

"Not only did we avert such racial conflagration, we created amongst ourselves one of the most exemplary and progressive nonracial and nonsexist democratic orders in the contemporary world."

Mandela represented a new breed of African liberation leaders, breaking from others of his era such as Robert Mugabe by serving one term.

In neighboring Zimbabwe, Mugabe has been president since 1987. A lot of African leaders overstayed their welcomes and remained in office for years, sometimes decades, making Mandela an anomaly.

But he was not always popular in world capitals.

Until 2008, the United States had placed him and other members of the African National Congress on its terror list because of their militant fight against the apartheid regime.

Humble beginnings
Rolihlahla Mandela started his journey in the tiny village of Mvezo, in the hills of the Eastern Cape, where he was born on July 18, 1918. His teacher later named him Nelson as part of a custom to give all schoolchildren Christian names.

His father died when he was 9, and the local tribal chief took him in and educated him.

Mandela attended school in rural Qunu, where he retreated before returning to Johannesburg to be near medical facilities.

He briefly attended University College of Fort Hare but was expelled after taking part in a protest with Oliver Tambo, with whom he later operated the nation's first black law firm.

In subsequent years, he completed a bachelor's degree through correspondence courses and studied law at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. He left without graduating in 1948.

Four years before he left the university, he helped form the youth league of the African National Congress, hoping to transform the organization into a more radical movement. He was dissatisfied with the ANC and its old-guard politics.

And so began Mandela's civil disobedience and lifelong commitment to breaking the shackles of segregation in South Africa.

Escalating trouble
In 1956, Mandela and dozens of other political activists were charged with high treason for activities against the government. His trial lasted five years, but he was ultimately acquitted.

Meanwhile, the fight for equality got bloodier.

Four years after his treason charges, police shot 69 unarmed black protesters in Sharpeville township as they demonstrated outside a station. The Sharpeville Massacre was condemned worldwide, and it spurred Mandela to take a more militant tone in the fight against apartheid.

The South African government outlawed the ANC after the massacre, and an angry Mandela went underground to form a new military wing of the organization.

"There are many people who feel that it is useless and futile for us to continue talking peace and nonviolence against a government whose reply is only savage attacks on an unarmed and defenseless people," Mandela said during his time on the run.

During that period, he left South Africa and secretly traveled under a fake name. The press nicknamed him "the Black Pimpernel" because of his police evasion tactics.

Militant resistance
The African National Congress heeded calls for stronger action against the apartheid regime, and Mandela helped launch an armed wing to attack government symbols, including post offices and offices.

The armed struggle was a defense mechanism against government violence, he said.

"My people, Africans, are turning to deliberate acts of violence and of force against the government in order to persuade the government, in the only language which this government shows by its own behavior that it understands," Mandela said at the time.

"If there is no dawning of sanity on the part of the government -- ultimately, the dispute between the government and my people will finish up by being settled in violence and by force. "

The campaign of violence against the state resulted in civilian casualties.

A white South African's memories of Mandela

Long imprisonment
In 1962, Mandela secretly received military training in Morocco and Ethiopia. When he returned home later that year, he was arrested and charged with illegal exit of the country and incitement to strike.

Mandela represented himself at the trial and was briefly imprisoned before being returned to court. In 1964, after the famous Rivonia trial, he was sentenced to life in prison for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government.

At the trial, instead of testifying, he opted to give a speech that was more than four hours long, and ended with a defiant statement.

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination," he said. "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

His next stop was the Robben Island prison, where he spent 18 of his 27 years in detention. He described his early days there as harsh.

"There was a lot of physical abuse, and many of my colleagues went through that humiliation," he said.

One of those colleagues was Khehla Shubane, 57, who was imprisoned in Robben Island during Mandela's last years there. Though they were in different sections of the prison, he said, Mandela was a towering figure.

"He demanded better rights for us all in prison. The right to get more letters, get newspapers, listen to the radio, better food, right to study," Shubane said. "It may not sound like much to the outside world, but when you are in prison, that's all you have."

And Mandela's khaki prison pants, he said, were always crisp and ironed.

"Most of us chaps were lazy, we would hang our clothes out to dry and wear them with creases. We were in a prison, we didn't care. But Mandela, every time I saw him, he looked sharp."

After 18 years, he was transferred to other prisons, where he experienced better conditions until he was freed in 1990.

Months before his release, he obtained a bachelor's in law in absentia from the University of South Africa.

Calls for release

His freedom followed years of an international outcry led by Winnie Mandela, a social worker whom he married in 1958, three months after divorcing his first wife.

Mandela was banned from reading newspapers, but his wife provided a link to the outside world.

She told him of the growing calls for his release and updated him on the fight against apartheid.

World pressure mounted to free Mandela with the imposition of political, economic and sporting sanctions, and the white minority government became more isolated.

In 1988 at age 70, Mandela was hospitalized with tuberculosis, a disease whose effects plagued him until the day he died. He recovered and was sent to a minimum security prison farm, where he was given his own quarters and could receive additional visitors.

Among them, in an unprecedented meeting, was South Africa's president, P.W. Botha.

Change was in the air.

When Botha's successor, de Klerk, took over, he pledged to negotiate an end to apartheid.

Free at last
On February 11, 1990, Mandela walked out of prison to thunderous applause, his clenched right fist raised above his head.

Still as upright and proud, he would say, as the day he walked into prison nearly three decades earlier.

He reassured ANC supporters that his release was not part of a government deal and informed whites that he intended to work toward reconciliation.

Four years after his release, in South Africa's first multiracial elections, he became the nation's first black president.

"The day he was inducted as president, we stood on the terraces of the Union Building," de Klerk remembered years later. "He took my hand and lifted it up. He put his arm around me, and we showed a unity that resounded through South Africa and the world."

Mandela: Patriarch, legend, family man

Broken marriage, then love

His union to Winnie Mandela, however, did not have such a happy ending. They officially divorced in 1996.

For the two, it was a fiery love story, derailed by his ambition to end apartheid. During his time in prison, Mandela wrote his wife long letters, expressing his guilt at putting political activism before family. Before the separation, Winnie Mandela was implicated in violence, including a conviction for being an accessory to assault in the death of a teenage township activist.

Mandela found love again two years after the divorce.
On his 80th birthday, he married Graca Machel, the widow of former Mozambique president, Samora Machel.

Only three of Mandela's children are still alive. He had 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Symbolic rugby

South Africa's fight for reconciliation was epitomized at the 1995 rugby World Cup Final in Johannesburg, when it played heavily favored New Zealand.

As the dominant sport of white Afrikaners, rugby was reviled by blacks in South Africa. They often cheered for rivals playing their national team.

Mandela's deft use of the national team to heal South Africa was captured in director Clint Eastwood's 2009 feature film "Invictus," starring Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the white South African captain of the rugby team.

Before the real-life game, Mandela walked onto the pitch, wearing a green-and-gold South African jersey bearing Pienaar's number on the back.

"I will never forget the goosebumps that stood on my arms when he walked out onto the pitch before the game started," said Rory Steyn, his bodyguard for most of his presidency.

"That crowd, which was almost exclusively white ... started to chant his name. That one act of putting on a No. 6 jersey did more than any other statement in bringing white South Africans and Afrikaners on side with new South Africa."

A promise honored
In 1999, Mandela did not seek a second term as president, keeping his promise to serve only one term. Thabo Mbeki succeeded him in June of the same year.

After leaving the presidency, he retired from active politics, but remained in the public eye, championing causes such as human rights, world peace and the fight against AIDS.

It was a decision born of tragedy: His only surviving son, Makgatho Mandela, died of AIDS at age 55 in 2005. Another son, Madiba Thembekile, was killed in a car crash in 1969.

Mandela's 90th birthday party in London's Hyde Park was dedicated to HIV awareness and prevention, and was titled 46664, his prison number on Robben Island.

A resounding voice
Mandela continued to be a voice for developing nations.

He criticized U.S. President George W. Bush for launching the 2003 war against Iraq, and accused the United States of "wanting to plunge the world into a Holocaust."

And as he was acclaimed as the force behind ending apartheid, he made it clear he was only one of many who helped transform South Africa into a democracy.

In 2004, a few weeks before he turned 86, he announced his retirement from public life to spend more time with his loved ones.

"Don't call me, I'll call you," he said as he stepped away from his hectic schedule.

'Like a boy of 15'
But there was a big treat in store for the avid sportsman.

When South Africa was awarded the 2010 football World Cup, Mandela said he felt "like a boy of 15."

In July that year, Mandela beamed and waved at fans during the final of the tournament in Johannesburg's Soccer City. It was his last public appearance.

"I would like to be remembered not as anyone unique or special, but as part of a great team in this country that has struggled for many years, for decades and even centuries," he said. "The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall."

With him gone, South Africans are left to embody his promise and idealism.

LONDON (AFP) – A man accused of hacking a soldier to death on a London street told police he was a “soldier of Allah” fighting a war against Britain but that the killing brought him little joy, a court heard Wednesday.

Michael Adebolajo, who is on trial with Michael Adebowale for the brutal murder of Lee Rigby near his barracks in the south London district of Woolwich in May, made the comments during interviews with police after his arrest.

In recordings of the interviews shown to the jury at the Old Bailey criminal court in London, 28-year-old Adebolajo blamed his actions on “wicked” leaders such as Prime Minister David Cameron and his predecessor Tony Blair.

Asked by detectives to describe the killing, during which the two men allegedly hit Rigby with a car before attacking him with knives, Adebolajo said the soldier’s head was “almost detached and may Allah forgive me if I acted in a way that is displeasing to him”.

In another interview, during which he had a blue blanket over his head, Adebolajo said the killing was “for those people who have not yet understood the nature, the nature of the war that’s ongoing and has been ongoing for some many years between the Muslims and the British people”.

He went on: “Your leaders, you have leaders who rule over you, unfortunately they rule over you in a very wicked, corrupt, selfish and oppressive manner.”

Adebolajo said he was “particularly disgusted by David Cameron, the Miliband brothers and what’s-his-name, Nick Clegg”, referring to opposition Labour leader Ed Miliband, his brother David, and Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister Clegg.

He also spoke of the “wickedness and corruption” of Blair, who took Britain in to the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Cameron, he said, was “trying to emulate the footsteps of Tony Blair as if he worships him”.

But he added that it brought him “little joy to approach anybody and slay them”.

Rigby’s widow Rebecca left the court in tears as the interviews were played.

A psychiatrist’s report read to the court earlier on Wednesday found that Adebolajo showed “no regret or remorse”.

Adebolajo and 22-year-old Adebowale both deny murder.

Judge Finds German Woman Guilty of Raping Eight Pakistani Muslim Men!

In the City of Wassenberg in Western Germany a woman has been found guilty of seducing and raping eight men in the first case of its kind in Europe. Maria Heidelsohn aged 18 alleges that on the afternoon of August 23rd she was pulled away by eight men from the porch she was sun bathing on and carried into a small shed in which she was brutally and repeatedly gang raped. Heidelsohn alleges that she cried for help repeatedly until she was bound and gagged, she then claims that she was beaten severely and both of her arms and one leg were broken.

Wassenbeg Police Chief Abdullah Al Hussein contends that there is no evidence Heidelsohn did not injure herself or ask a friend to injure her in order to attempt to frame up her alleged attackers.

The Police Chief noted that no male adult Muslim men saw the attack occur to corroborate her story despite the area being largely Muslim. In the large German town new legislation passed overwhelmingly last year stipulates that four adult male Muslim witnesses are necessary in order to corroborate any charges made by a woman in accordance with traditional Islamic jurisprudence.

Police Chief Al Hussein noted “Maria Heidelsohn had been politely requested at least two times that I know of personally to wear hijab that is to cover herself more modestly yet she refused, she even had the audacity and brazen effrontery to tell one Muslim man who made the request she was “not a Muslim.”

This has been a majority Muslim area now for some time yet she showed absolutely no desire to accommodate the wishes of the majority in her community. She also earned the reputation of a whore having once been seen sipping coffee with a man who was not her husband and not believed to be a male relative shamelessly in broad day light, several people saw it and it continued for almost thirty minutes. The Judge in Maria Heidelsohn’s case the Honourable Muhammed Akbar Khan himself a German of Pakistani Muslim ancestry announced in his decision “I have generously given Maria Heidelsohn four days for any eligible adult male Muslim witnesses to step forward in her case yet none have done so. It is indisputable that Maria Heidelsohn was wearing a revealing bathing suit, in fact a bikini at the time, she therefore encouraged and invited sexual advances from all men within sight of her. It is very clear that she was attempting wrongly and as the harlot to engage in the seduction game. In fact it is she who is the rapist in this case seducing men who were unable to withstand the lure of her indecency, corrupting good and devout Muslim men luring them into the sin of fornication through her gaze and uncovered state.” The eight men of Pakistani origin range in age from 18-35 and were released by authorities immediately after the ruling.

Heidelsohn has been sentenced to life in prison prompting outrage among local Muslims who insist that she should have received the death penalty for besmirching the names of several good Muslim family men, at last two of whom are studying to become clerics. Judge Akbar Khan has given the recommended stipulation that Heidelsohn can reduce her sentence to six months if she converts to Islam while in prison and agrees to marry one of the men she seduced and raped.

Radical right-wing German political parties with neo-Nazi symapthies and Islamophobic hate groups have seized upon the case of Maria Heidelsohn as evidence that multi-culturalism is failing in Germany. Germany’s largest political parties have conferred with German Muslim leaders and agreed to introduce stronger legislation to combat the rise of Islamophobia and racism across Europe and Germany in particular. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has proposed increased government surveillance and censorship of the media including television, newspapers, magazines and even online blogs in order to prevent the propagation of racist stereotypes and hate speech especially that of an Islamophobic nature.

Although several Muslim leaders did meet with Merkel, a small number of the clerics who were invited refused citing her gender and stating that it would be inappropriate for them to be talking with a woman. The clerics have made a counter offer instead agreeing to speak with Merkel’s husband. There is no word yet on whether or not Chancellor Merkel’s husband will meet with the Islamic leaders.

Racial and religious tension is at all time high in Germany as just last month a German youth offered half of a ham sandwich to a Muslim classmate who had forgotten his lunch. Muslim leaders believe that the six year old child was deliberately mocking Islam and was not ignorant of the fact that pork is forbidden for Muslims. Maria Heidelsohn’s lawyer states that she plans to appeal the case and refers to it as “A travesty of justice that would have been unthinkable anywhere in Europe just a few years ago. We really need to ask ourselves what sort of a society this is becoming. Of course I condemn racism and Islamophobia but we need to recognize that tolerance must be a two way street.”

Popular comedian, Julius Agwu is currently suing telcoms giant Etisalat to court over alleged blocking of his business line.

He is reportedly demanding for N100million as compensation for jobs lost, contact lost, for the inconveniences, and for being mistreated by Etisalat staff.

Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone number 08189555555, which he uses as his business line. On the 8th of October, 2013, our client travelled out of the country and returned on the 17th of the same month. Upon his return, he tried severally to make calls from the aforestated GSM line but same could not connect. Not only could he not make calls, he also could not receive calls on the said GSM line. This continued for some days until he got a message that his line had been blocked by the network provider.

37 Christians Killed in Jos, Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria Suspected Muslim herdsmen slaughtered 37 Christians in coordinated attacks on four Plateau state villages early this morning after Boko Haram terrorists killed at least 34 Christians in Borno state earlier this month, sources said

In attacks on the four predominantly Christian villages that started at 1 a.m. in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State in central Nigeria, ethnic Fulani herdsmen killed 37 people, injured many others and destroyed homes, the military’s Special Task Force spokesman, Salisu Mustapha, said in a press statement.

“The attackers killed 13 persons in Katu Kapang, eight in Daron, nine in Tul and seven others in Rawuru,” he said.

Mustapha told Morning Star News by phone that the heavily-armed assailants were believed to be Muslim Fulani herdsmen. Soldiers were still trying to repel the attackers as he spoke.

The Miyetti Allah cattle-rearing association reportedly denied that Fulani herdsmen were responsible for attacking the villages.

Most mainstream media mentioned vague accusations of cattle theft or unsupported statements of political and land disputes as possible motivations for the attacks, although in recent months Muslim Fulani herdsmen have increased the unprovoked slaughter of unarmed Christians in their homes that has taken place for several years in Plateau state.

Christian leaders otherwise at a loss to explain the increase in attacks believe Islamic extremist groups are inciting Fulani Muslims to attack them in Plateau state as well as in Kaduna, Bauchi, Nasarawa and Benue states. They fear that the herdsmen, with backing from Islamic extremist groups, want to take over the predominantly Christian areas in order to acquire land for grazing, stockpile arms and expand Islamic territory. Hit-and-run, guerrilla-style attacks on Christian villages in which children are shot to death as they sleep support their suspicion that the assaults are motivated by desire to eliminate Christianity.

Christians make up 51.3 percent of Nigeria’s population of 158.2 million, while Muslims account for 45 percent. Those practicing indigenous religions may be as high as 10 percent of the total population, according to Operation World, so the percentages of Christians and Muslims may be less.

The Rev. Pam Jang Pam of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Plateau state’s Foron village told Morning Star News that he received phone calls from anguished members of his congregation.

“I received distress calls at about 1 a.m. from the members of our church in the villages of Rawuru, Tasu, Foron, and Gurabok informing me that they were being attacked and that they need help,” he said.

Felicia Anselem, spokesperson for the Plateau State Command of the Nigeria Police, confirmed that the attacks on the villages were coordinated strikes.

“The attacks were carried out at about 1 a.m. this morning in the villages of Rawuru, Tasu, Foron and Gurabok,” she said. “The attackers attacked the villages at the same time, having gone there in groups.”

The slaughters come after members of the Islamic extremist Boko Haram group in Borno state killed at least 26 Christians Nov. 11-13 and eight others on Nov. 3 in Nigeria’s northeast. Boko Haram, whose name is translated as “Western education is a sin,” has attacked religious, governmental and police centers in its campaign to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law) throughout Nigeria.

The Rev. Titus Pona, chairman of the Borno chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), told Morning Star News that Boko Haram slaughtered the Christians and drove many others from their villages.

“For three days, between Monday, Nov. 11, and Wednesday, Nov. 13, they attacked the Christian villages,” he said. “They came in two Hilux vehicles, three buses and about 30 motorcycles armed with AK-47 rifles, going from house to house, killing, looting, and burning houses.”

Paul Gadzama, a director with Green Planet, a Non-Governmental Organization and a Christian from Askira Uba Local Government Area in Borno, said that more than 26 Christians had been killed and hundreds forced to flee. Gadzama said the Islamic extremists attacked the predominantly Christian villages of Bdagu, Izge, Hartsa and Yazza.

“They destroyed houses, killed Christians, and displaced hundreds of others,” he said. “They set fire to about 40 houses.”

Pona added that Boko Haram attackers also invaded Dille and Lassa villages, among others.

CAN President Ayo Oritsejafor and the Rev. Dr. Musa Asake, CAN secretary, said this month that Boko Haram members also attacked Ngoshe village in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State on Nov. 3, killing eight Christians. Several church buildings were razed. No arrests have been made, they said.

Among the dead were Baba Ayuba, Baba Bitrus and Baba Isa Biyabra, a security guard and four others they had yet to identify, they said in a statement.

“They burned 11 houses owned by the Christians and three churches, which were the EYN [Brethren] church, Deeper Life Bible church and the Redeemed Christian Church of God,” the statement read. “We were informed that when the Christian community sought to meet the state governor on this issue, he said he has no time to see them until February next year.”

The Rev. Dr. Soja Bewarang, president of COCIN, said in a Nov. 22 address to the 83rd General Church Council that innocent members of the church had been killed and their property destroyed by Boko Haram militants and Muslim Fulani herdsmen.

“In Borno, Yobe and Gwoza, our members are systematically identified and killed,” he said. “My heart beats for our staff and members in Borno. Retired Rev. Daniel Gula was almost killed by Boko Haram recently. He is presently in Jos recovering from injuries sustained in the cause of running for his dear life. His wife is in the UK for the obvious reason of possibility of kidnapping, being a white person.”

Bewarang said in spite of appeals to the Nigerian government to contain the dangers confronting the church, Christians are not unmindful that God has a final say on resolving the persecution the church is facing in Nigeria.

“Even as we are looking at these issues, we need not forget that God has the final say on man and his security concerns,” he said. “Therefore we must always surrender our security concerns to the Lord, because the Watchman watches in vain if the Lord does not watch alongside with him.”

By popular demand, Angolan authorities have taken pre-emptive action and decided to ban the Muslim religion, which they consider a cult, NOT a religion. They see what Muslims are doing to non-Muslims, especially in Africa, and are taking steps to prevent the same from happening in Angola.

In early October 2013, the Muslims living in Luanda in the municipality of Viana Zango were shocked to see the minaret of their mosque dismantled into pieces on the ground without permission. On Thursday 03 October in the morning, the Angolan authorities decided to destroy the mosque Zango located in the urban district of Viana 17 km. The governor of Luanda Bento announced in a radio spot that radical Muslims are not welcome in Angola and the Angolan government is not ready for the legalization of mosques in Angola.

And on Tuesday, November 19, the Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva said. “Regarding Islam, the legalization process has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Therefore all mosques would be closed until further notice. “ It should be noted that the Angolan government has made closing of all mosques a priority. The only two mosques located in Luanda have already received a warning document signed by the mayor of the municipality of Viana José Moreno.

The provincial governor of Luanda, Bento Bento, said on the airwaves of local radio that “radical Muslims are not welcome in Angola and the Angolan government is not ready for the legalization of mosques.” Minister of Culture, Rosa Cruz e Silva explained that the law on freedom of religion will be reviewed given the current national context , noting that the Government will redouble its efforts to fight relentlessly against religious cults like Islam which are contrary to the customs of Angolan culture.

95% of Angola’s population is Christian. A quarter belongs to Protestant churches founded during the colonial period, including congregational evangelical church.

This decisive action taken by the Angolan head of state is based on a desire to guard against the rise of the Wahhabi ideology that has created havoc, death and destruction in Africa and elsewhere. And as rightly explained Tunisian philosopher Mezri Haddad: “Islamism and Islamophobia feed each other. Worse, long-term Islamism as an ideology destroy Islam as religion. “

According to the International Religious Freedom Report 2008, Islam in Angola is a minority religion with 80,000 – 90,000 adherents, composed largely of migrants from West Africa and families of Lebanese origin. The Muslims comprise between 2.5 to 3 percent of Angola’s overall population of 17 million people, most of them Christians.

On September 1, 2008, a Muslim mob attacked non-Muslims in the community of Andulo. The school-age daughter of a deacon at one of the churches was decapitated. Forty Christians were assaulted or tortured. The mob burned three church buildings. They also went to non-Muslim houses to intimidate them or destroyed items of property. Stones were thrown at the headquarters of a local Christian project, causing some damage. An Angolan Christian leader said that the local police were unable to stop the attack and fled the scene.
