They don't call it the Capital de Noël (The Capital of Christmas) for no reason. Christmas markets in Strasbourg are world famous, and the gargantuan Christmas tree in the town square might just bring tears to your eyes. The Alsace area of France just might be one of the prettiest in Europe but Strasbourg takes the cake when it comes to Christmas. I've put together a list of things to do in Strasbourg, France at Christmas that will make it one of the most memorable and magical ones ever.

Strasbourg is on the border of France and Germany and truthfully, its switched hands a number of times through the years. Though it's now a French city, it still has lots of German influence. Don't be surprised to hear German being spoken as you pass through the Christmas stalls. Getting to Strasbourg is easy since it's a major rail hub, and the high-speed TGV from Paris gets you there in under two hours. You can also fly into the Karlsruhe, Germany airport which is about 45 minutes away . I often drive or take the bus from my town of Heidelberg, Germany, only about an hour away.

Things to Do in Strasbourg, France at Christmas

Christmas Markets

The are not one, two, or even seven Christmas markets in Strasbourg. There are ten. For a city of this size, that's downright superfluous, but in the best way possible. This city is adorned from street to street with lights, wreaths, and ornaments. It's easy to walk around the city to see all the markets in a day or two. The Christmas Markets typically start the last week of November and end on Christmas Eve (December 24th).

The Christmas market dates for Strasbourg for 2026 are Friday, November 27th through Thursday, December 24th, 2026. The markets are generally open daily from about 11 AM to 9 PM, opening at 2 PM on the first day and closing early (around 6 PM) on Christmas Eve. The stalls shut down after Christmas Eve, but the giant Christmas tree and the city lights stay up into early January.

Of course, there are many Christmas markets around the world, and particularly in Germany, but the Strasbourg Christmas market seems to have an extra twinkle in its eye. The markets represent a time of the past, with families coming together to celebrate, indulge, and share. It's unique that Christmas markets are here and echoes back to the fact that Germany once ruled over this area.

The Christmas market tradition is markedly German, so it's special that this tradition still remained in France. You'll find the most famous is Christkindelsmärik at Place Broglie which dates back to 1570 which is one of the oldest markets in Europe.

In total, there are over 300 stalls throughout the city so you're bound to find one as you stroll along. At the bottom of this post, I list out all the markets that take place.

Check out the Cathedral

The Cathédral Notre-Dame is one of the most grand structures I've ever seen. From the 15th through the 17th century it was the tallest building in the world. Holding on to that ranking for that period of time means it was an architectural mastery and one of the best representations of Gothic art. Head inside to see the beautiful structure up close and check out the astronomical clock. Don't forget to head up the tower for commanding views of the city.

Of course, there is a Christmas market outside of the cathedral and is one of the most historic. You can sip on mulled wine as the bells of the cathedral occasionally ring. Here there are over 100 chalets (these are stalls or booths) that are offering Christmas ornaments, sheepskins, gloves, warm drinks, and delicious food.

Eat a German – French Fusion

Strasbourg is definitely a great place to be for gastronomic purposes. The city is home to several Michelin-starred restaurants if you want to splurge. Of course, with all this mix of German and French influence it produced some very tasty food. One of my favorites is the Flammkucken also known as tarte flambée. It's a very thin pizza topped with creme fraiche, delicately sliced onions, and ham.

The intoxicating smell of the sizzling onions will tempt anyone to try it. There are a variety of options and toppings so you can find one that suits your taste. A great place to check out is L'Ancienne Douane which is well known for their Alsace cuisine.

Admire the Christmas Tree

What is it about Christmas trees that instills a childlike wonder in all of us? There's something just so magical about the combination of evergreens, lights, and ornaments that always fills me with joy. When it comes to Christmas trees in Strasbourg they've decided that bigger is better. Required to be a minimum of 30 meters tall, the tree towers above the square and is lit up with 7 kilometers of twinkling lights. Located at Place Kléber it is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and each year brings a different theme.

On the weekend nights and closer to Christmas you can see live music right next to the tree. There's also ample shopping around and near the square, in case you need any Christmas gifts. Just watching the lights illuminate as the sky darkens is the star of the Christmas show in Strasbourg.

Petite France

This is one of the most charming areas to see in all of Europe. It's a historic quarter in Strasbourg lined with half-timbered houses that flank the river. Of course, during Christmas it lights up even more. Walk through the canals to take in the 14th century towers and amble through the cobblestone streets for traditional restaurants and shops. Don't forget to stop and take a picture at Quartier des Tanneurs, one of the best place for photos in Strasbourg.

One of the best parts of walking around Petite France is the fact that it's so well preserved. Of course, you'll also find a Christmas market held here. You truly feel like you're walking back in time. As the bridges illuminate and glow above the water you can't help but feel romantic.

Christmas in France makes an already lovely place even more charming. France is a country often characterized by its romance, and that enchantment is multiplied during the Christmas season. The streets are decorated with twinkling lights, stores smell of pine and cinnamon, and special holiday meals are prepared on stoves across the country.

But one of my favorite things to do throughout the Christmas season in France is to visit the many traditional, and sometimes not-so-traditional, holiday markets throughout the country.

Similar to other European Christmas markets, French Christmas markets offer a smattering of Christmas spirit in one picturesque locale. Wooden huts display handmade items from makers across the country, holiday foods are sold hot, and mulled wine warms those cold shopping fingers.

Wherever you find yourself in France this holiday season, from Paris to the French Riviera and some of the smallest villages in between, you’re guaranteed to be near a Christmas market. The following are the top Christmas markets to visit in France.

France is a large country, so it's not possible to go to every single market. I highly recommend that you visit the Alsace region of France. Here, you can go to many of the top Christmas markets like Strasbourg and Colmar. From here, you can easily venture into Germany, where the original Christmas markets take place.

1. Strasbourg – the oldest Christmas market in France

If I was only able to suggest one city in France to visit this holiday season, it would have to be Strasbourg. Also known as The Capital of Christmas, or Capital de Noel, Strasbourg overflows with holiday spirit, from the magical decorations on nearly every window in town to the towering Christmas tree in the town square. It's one of the largest in Europe!

Strasbourg is not just known for its one Christmas market. It’s known for 10 fantastical markets, which are all easily accessed on foot. These markets are all some of the most traditional in the country, bringing families together to celebrate the food, drinks, crafts, and decorations of the holiday season. In fact, the famous Christkindelsmarik at Place Broglie is one of the oldest in all of Europe, dating back to 1570.

Shop the more than 300 vendor stalls found throughout the city, sip the hot mulled wine, snack on traditional eats, and most importantly, enjoy the holidays with the ones you love. Strasbourg is the perfect destination for making new Christmas memories.

2. Colmar Christmas Market – Best Christmas Market in the Alsace

Similar to Strasbourg, Colmar is home to several Christmas markets, but the main Colmar Christmas Market is a destination of its own. Nestled among some of the city’s most popular architectural sites and beneath the glittering trees, you’ll find stalls lining the streets, selling spiced gingerbread, local art, handmade ornaments, and more.

In addition to the main Colmar Christmas Market, you’ll find roughly 60 more stalls at Place des Dominicains and another at Place de l’Ancienne Douane, lining the scenic Lauch River. However, you won’t want to leave the city without visiting Place Jeanne-d’Arc, where you’ll find an incredible selection of traditional foods, including local wine, cookies, and foie gras. I love to stock up on fresh, local meats and cheeses to display on holiday charcuterie boards.

Colmar Christmas Market dates: Nov. 23, 2026 to Dec. 29, 2026 (the gourmet market and Ferris wheel stay open until Jan. 3, 2027)

3. Metz – One of the largest Christmas markets in France

If you find yourself in the north east of France this holiday season, make sure to visit Metz Christmas Market! I love the beautiful city of Metz! It's only located an hour and a half from my favorite Christmas market in France, Strasbourg, so it's well worth it to go!

Wander through the more than 100 vendor stalls, which are set up throughout the city center and in front of the stunning Metz Cathedral. Marc Chagall illumianted the cathedral and it's already a stunning, impressive building.

But the best part? The gourmet and decadent food. Throughout the city you can have your fill of traditional French food and Christmas specialties! Taste the Tartiflette, raclette, escargot, and even foie gras. Top it off with Vin Chaud (mulled wine) for the perfect Christmas market trip!

Metz Christmas Market dates: November 20th through December 30th, 2026 (closed December 25th)

4. Ribeauvillé – Best Medieval Christmas Market in France

Looking for a truly magical and unique Christmas market experience? Then you must visit the Ribeauvillé Medieval Christmas Market! This market is held in one of the most beautiful, medieval villages in all of France. But be aware- it's only on TWO weekends!

Ribeauvillé is located in Alsace, which means the village and market are full of German influences. This is most evident in the Christmas market food, which includes specialties like gingerbread (lebkuchen), spit-roasted pork knuckle (schweinshaxe), and flammenküche (tarte flambée).

The market stretches throughout out the town, but what makes Ribeavillé so unique is that the entire town participates. You'll see people dressed up with stilts, scary cosumes, and even live animals. Many of the markets don't accept money, you'll need to exchange your money for wooden beans instead! There are huge logs in the middle of the street on fire for roadting meat s'mores, there are games throughout the village, and it's one of the most entertaining markets you can go to! The medieval themed market is all set to the backdrop of pastel half timebred houses. simply magical!

Ribeauvillé Medieval Christmas Market dates: December 5th, 6th, 12th, and 13th, 2026 – as you can see it's a super short season but so worth it!

5. Kaysersberg – Traditional Alsatian Christmas Market in France

Nestled in the Vosges Mountains of north eastern France, Kaysersberg is truly a hidden gem. This medieval town is home to one of the most beautiful and enchanting Christmas markets in all of France.

The market is set up around the imposing St. Mauritius Church, which is illuminated at night to add to the overall festive atmosphere. There are over 80 vendor stalls throughout the market, selling everything from handmade ornaments and toys to traditional French food. The smells of gingerbread and fresh baked goods fill the air, while the sound of Christmas carols can be heard in the distance.

Kaysersberg is the perfect place to find unique gifts for your loved ones, while also enjoying a festive and charming atmosphere. If you're looking for a truly magical Christmas market experience, Kaysersberg is the place for you!

Kaysersberg Christmas Market dates: November 27th through December 20th, 2026 – Fridays through Sundays only (Nov. 27–29, Dec. 4–6, 11–13, and 18–20)

6. Eguisheim – France's Best Wine-Themed Christmas Market

Eguisheim is a quaint and picturesque wine-growing village located in the Alsace region of France. This village is home to one of the best (and most unique) Christmas markets in all of France. As you can imagine, the Eguisheim Christmas market is themed around wine!

There are stalls selling everything from wine-themed Christmas decorations to handmade gifts and, of course, local wines. You can even get your own personalized bottle of wine at the market! In addition to the many vendor stalls, there are also wine tastings and demonstrations throughout the market.

Eguisheim is the perfect place to enjoy a glass (or two) of wine while doing your Christmas shopping. If you love wine and are looking for a unique Christmas market experience, Eguisheim is the place for you!

7. Riquewihr – A Timeless Christmas Market in France

Riquewihr is a medieval town located in the Alsace region of France. This town is home to one of the most beautiful and timeless Christmas markets in all of France.

The market is set up around the picturesque Dolder Tower, which is illuminated at night to add to the overall festive atmosphere. There are over 100 vendor stalls throughout the market, selling everything from handmade gifts and toys to traditional French food. The smells of gingerbread and fresh baked goods fill the air, while the sound of Christmas carols can be heard in the distance.

8. Lille Christmas Market

The city of Lille in northern France welcomes visitors during the holiday season with the smells of fresh garlands and mulled wine. Although, it’s often the spectacular light displays that draw visitors this far north. Lille takes Christmas seriously, and the Lille Christmas Market can bring the Christmas spirit out in anyone.

The market features more than 90 stalls, which sell locally-crafted gifts as well as items from around the world. However, my favorite way to see the market isn’t necessarily on foot, as a giant Ferris wheel offers magnificent views of the market stalls, shining Christmas tree, and more from above. The Lille Christmas Market is smaller than some others in the country, but it creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening out in the city.

Lille Christmas Market dates: Nov. 18, 2026 to Dec. 30, 2026

9. Bordeaux Christmas Market

This city may be more famous for its wines than its Christmas spirit, but it’s no secret that wine and the holidays pair nicely together. The Bordeaux Christmas Market features more than 100 different stalls, and of course, it’s an ideal place to stock up on wine for the holidays, whether you’ll be enjoying it at your holiday table or gifting it to friends. Other stalls offer handmade glass items, gourmet chocolates, perfumes, linens, and some of the most unique pieces handmade pottery.

The Bordeaux Christmas Market isn’t just for adults either. Families can explore a tour of the route that pilgrims once traveled to Santiago de Compostela, visit Santa Claus, or hop aboard the holiday carousel. This market is so much fun that it can often get busy, so you’ll want to arrive early to find parking if you’ll be bringing your own vehicle. The locals recommend visiting by train.

10. Nice Christmas Market

The French Riviera is famous for its glitz and glam, and the Nice Christmas Market shines just as bright. Here, you’ll find more than 60 vendor stalls and a long list of activities and events for visitors of all ages. Once you’re done sipping on vin chaud (hot wine) and shopping for handmade holiday gifts, you can head to the ice skating rink, visit Santa in his workshop, and enjoy a variety of carnival rides and games. You can even hop aboard the towering Ferris wheel and view the Christmas market, as well as the Mediterranean, from above.

One of my favorite features of the Nice Christmas Market is that this region tends to be warmer and sunnier than other areas of France this time of year. Blue skies and mitten-less days make visiting the Nice holiday market feel more like a vacation than any other. Yet, the fir trees and holiday lights still provide the Christmas charm present at other markets across the country. Bring the kids and enjoy all of the outdoor activities the Nice Christmas Market has to offer.

11. Rouen Christmas Market

Directly in front of the grand cathedral, you’ll find the fantastical Rouen Christmas Market, annually bringing holiday cheer to the capital city of Normandy. The Christmas market, and the holiday events and performances accompanying it, transform this city by the Seine into a magical winter wonderland, complete with 70 wooden chalets for shopping and dining, an ice skating rink, street entertainment, and of course, special visits from Santa Claus. Rouen is known for going over-the-top with holiday decorations and excitement, so you won’t want to miss this scenic city during the holidays.

Rouen is one of my favorite cities in France, and the whole region of Normandy is worth a visit.

12. Paris – City of Lights Christmas Market

It's no surprise that the City of Lights is home to more than one Christmas market, and that’s what makes visiting Paris this time of year so special. Visitors can weave through the historic streets and iconic landmarks from Christmas market to Christmas market, sampling traditional holiday treats, listening to choirs, ice skating, and shopping.

Some of my favorites are the Tuileries Garden market, right between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, which is packed with wooden chalets, carnival rides, and a Ferris wheel, and the cozy market at Square René Viviani with views of Notre-Dame. For something bigger, the Christmas market at La Défense is one of the largest in the Paris region, with hundreds of chalets selling handicrafts, local food, and mulled wine. Shopping and dining on the streets of Paris is a holiday tradition that many locals hold dear, and I think it’s something every visitor should experience when visiting the city during the Christmas season.

13. Chamonix Christmas Market

If you want to fully embrace the winter weather and feel like you're walking through an actual snow globe, there's no better place than Chamonix. This is one of my favorite places in France, let alone Europe.

Chamonix is home to Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Europe. Christmas is a great time to visit. Along with the great winter activities like skiing and sledding, the Christmas market is in the perfect setting in this idyllic village surrounded by the French Alps.

The best way I can describe Chamonix is like a vintage postcard. You just have to see it to believe it! The dates for the Chamonix Christmas market are very short, only about two weeks in mid December. But with all the activities and the beautiful chalets make it one of my top picks for Christmas in France.

Chamonix Christmas Market dates: The 2026 dates haven't been announced yet. Last season it ran Dec. 18, 2025 to Jan. 4, 2026, so expect a similar mid-December to early January window.

14. Grenoble Christmas Market 

Rivaling Strasbourg as the most magical French locale during the holidays, Grenoble offers a delightful Christmas market with an even more impressive backdrop. Nestled in a valley between the Chartreuse, Vercors, and Belledonne mountains, you can’t help but feel like you’ve traveled to a fairytale land when enjoying Christmas in the Alps.

Even more, the Grenoble Christmas Market is actually four Christmas markets located in various areas throughout the city center. The Place Grenette is known for its Afro-Indian crafts and concerts, while the main market at Place Victor Hugo is famous for hot cider, hot wine, cheese, salami, and other mouthwatering holiday eats (and drinks). Grenoble overflows with holiday cheer, activities, concerts, and events this time of year, so allow yourself plenty of time to discover them all. 

Grenoble Christmas Market dates and times: Nov. 20, 2026 to Dec. 24, 2026

15. Montpellier Christmas Market

Montpellier is a city balancing between old and new. Modern trams pass by medieval streets and ancient architecture. The Montpellier Christmas Market also blends classic Southern French Christmas tradition with modern events and activities. Now set along the elegant Promenade du Peyrou, this market features dozens of merchants selling food products and crafts from throughout the region. Oysters, sweets, and mulled wine are sold alongside toys, holiday decorations, and handmade jewelry. 

Santa Claus always sits at the heart of the Montpellier Christmas Markets, and visitors can also enjoy Christmas parades, sleigh rides, an ice skating rink, workshops, and more. For the adults, a nighttime market offers regional foods, wines, and other drinks inside a large heated tent. There’s something for everyone at the Montpellier Christmas Market.

16. Amiens Christmas Market

The Amiens Christmas Market may be the final market on this, but that doesn’t mean it lacks anything in terms of charm, crave-worthy foods, and holiday shopping stalls. In fact, as the largest holiday market in nothern France, the Amiens Christmas Market offers more than 2 kilometers of vendors from throughout France and around the world. You can even find items from India and Canada here.

This is truly a market where you can find something for even the most difficult person on your list. And while the adults enjoy shopping from stall to stall, kids can hop aboard a train through a winter wonderland or a number of other holiday rides. Be sure to time at least one of your visits to the market around 7pm, when the Cathedrale Notre-Dame d’Amiens displays a spectacular light and sound show. I must admit — this unforgettable light display pairs perfectly with a cup of hot mulled cider.

Christmas Market Itinerary

You can't visit all the Christmas markets in France, but when you use my itinerary you can make sure to see some of the best and make the most of your time! The Alsace region has the best Christmas markets and they just feel like a magical fairy tale come to life!

Start off in Strasbourg! This is where I suggest you concentrate most of your time since it's one of the largest and best Christmas markets in France. There's so much to do here and so much history. Make sure to take a tour of the incredible Notre Dam Cathedral.

Next, head south and concentrate on Obernai and Ribeauvillé – make sure to check your dates to ensure you're in Ribeauvillé on the dates of the Christmas market as it's only two weekends!

You can easily see the markets of Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim in a day if you're feeling ambitious. Or, you can stretch these out over a couple days.

Make sure to leave yourself one full day for Colmar as it's such a beautiful market.

If you have extra time for your Christmas market journey through France, head to Mulhouse. I also recommend popping over to Germany and seeing the nearby markets in Baden-Baden, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, and even the famous tiny Ravenna Gorge Christmas market!

What are the dates for the Christmas markets in France?

There are countless holiday markets, large and small, held throughout France this time of year. While the dates can vary from a single weekend to nearly two-months-long, most holiday markets take place from mid-November to late December. Some dates are extended into early January to accommodate New Year’s Eve festivities. 

What should I bring to a French Christmas Market?

You don’t need to be much more prepared to visit a French Christmas market than you would be to enjoy a normal day of shopping in a French city. However, because many of the markets are entirely outdoors, you’ll want to wear enough layers to keep you warm for several hours outdoors. Gloves, a hat, and a scarf are accessories I almost always wear to Christmas market (unless I’m in the French Riviera).

It’s also important to come prepared with plenty of cash, or a debit card to be able to withdraw cash. Many vendors prefer, or only accept, cash payments.

Tradition of Christmas in France

The Christmas markets in France are some of the oldest traditional markets in Europe. It first appeared in the Alsace region in 1521. Strasbourg's Christmas market dates back to 1570. If you had to pick a region, I suggest visiting the Christmas Markets in the Alsace region- these are the best!

In Strasbourg, one of the largest Christmas trees is in the city center at Place Kléber, and one of the largest Advent wreath is in the Cathedral of Strasbourg.

The Christmas tree in French is called, “sapin de noël.” The tree, covered in red apples and lights, symbolizes Jesus and, “The light that illuminates the world.” Santa Claus is known as “Père Noël” and is inspired by Saint Nicolas. Originally, he gave gifts to kids in Germany and France on December 6th, Saint Nicolas day.

December 24th, Rèveillion is when most French people celebrate with families and have their large meals. They indulge in sumptuous, traditional food like oysters, truffles, cookies, and frog legs. Then, they might attend Midnight Mass.

How to Pack for Christmas in Europe

I can't recommend packing in a carry on enough!

A couple years ago, I upgraded to this rolling bag that can ALSO be a backpack! It's a rolling bag that doubles as a backpack and it works SO well. Why a rolling bag AND backpack combo? Because it really is the best to pass as a carry on bag!

This back pack – it's a game changer and is great if you want a typical backpack. This is the exact one I've had for nearly a decade. It's been to over 60 countries and never fails me. If you prefer a rolling bag, I recommend this one!

Packing Tips

Wear your bulky stuff on the plane (coat, chunky sweaters) and pack strategically. You don't need 5 sweaters. Instead, use accessories to change it up! I swear it will look like you packed 25 different outfits just by switching up scarves and accessories.

The key to winter packing in a carry on is layering. I always bring a white and black turtleneck to wear under sweaters, coats, even dresses. One of my favorite things to bring are fleece-lined tights and leggings. These can be added under jeans, skirts, or dresses to feel warmer.

If you're not used to the cold, you might be tempted to pack a lot of heavy clothes. But trust me, less is more. You can always buy a cute scarf or hat at the market if you get cold.

How To Dress For Christmas Markets in Europe

For a typical day, it can get quite cold. It's better to be on the safe side when it comes to warmth! I cannot stress this enough, but layering is key. From top to bottom, here's what I wear for a typical Christmas Market day:

I consider myself an expert! I've been to over 100 Christmas markets in Europe and I take people to the markets every year! (Hear more about that here.)

I am not going to be cold at the Christmas markets. YOU SHOULD NEVER BE COLD! That's a quick way to ruin your time at the markets! I have a continually updated list on Amazon here. I update this regularly with what you need to pack!

Opt for Comfortable Shoes

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART! You're going to be on your feet all day. You’ll be doing a lot of walking when you’re at the Christmas market, so make sure you pack comfortable shoes. Leave your high heels at home and opt for flats or tennis shoes. I pair my white Reeboks with nearly everything. It looks super cute and makes it easy to walk on cobblestone streets. And although it may be tempting to bring your cutest pair of shoes, remember that they might not be practical if it’s cold or snowy outside. So make sure to pack both cute and practical shoes!

Jewelry and Toiletry Packing

Travel size is key when it comes to packing toiletries. I love this case for all my makeup. It makes it easy to open so I can see everything I need. For jewelry take a case so things don't get tangled!

Dress in Layers

The weather can be unpredictable during the winter months, so it’s always best to dress in layers. That way, if it gets cold, you can easily add a jacket or scarf. And if it gets too hot, you can always take off a layer or two. But avoid packing too many heavy items, as you don’t want to lug around a giant coat all day. A light jacket or sweater should suffice along with your heavy duty coat.

I recommend this coat! It's been amazing for me and withstands the alps to the chilly, windy days. The hood is key!

Also a fan of this “packable” puffer coat as it's nice and warm and not bulky!

Choose festive colors and patterns

When in doubt, go for festive colors and patterns! This is the time of year to break out your red and green clothes (or whatever colors are popular in your country). And don’t be afraid to experiment with different patterns—just make sure they’re appropriate for the occasion. For example, avoiding wearing anything too sexy or revealing since you’ll be around family and friends.

Packing List Must Haves

If I had to pick a few things I wouldn't leave home without, this would be it!

• Crossbody bag (Similar) – This is what I carry in general to travel Europe, it holds everything and the zipper keeps everything safe! Plus it allows me to be hands free
• Sunglasses – These are my go to! Would also make a great Christmas gift
• Backpack – This is my Backpack that I've carried for nearly a decade- this is what I use as my carry on bag and I never check a bag. This rolling bag is also a good option. • Layering Turtleneck – I always pack these to ensure I stay warm
• Beanie (Another Option) – I usually pack one or two beanies to keep ultra warm, plus switching it up makes it look like I've packed way more than I have
• Fleece Lined Leggings (another option) – a MUST! Can be worn under jeans, skirts, or with a coat. Keeps me warm!
• Coat – You need a good coat! This one is awesome! I am also a fan of Packable Puffer Coat.
• Cable Knit Sweater – Opt for a sweater you really love that will keep you warm. I always bring a white one since it goes with all my scarves and beanies
• Fleece lined tights – these are game changers!
• Reebok Tennis Shoes – my tried and trusted shoes! Go with everything
• Scarf – Cute to make any outfit feel more festive
• Socks (Also love these) – Bring a few pairs of thick, warm socks
• Camera – My camera for taking all my photos
• Hiking Boots – These are comfortable enough to wear all day and are cute!
• Travel Face Collection – I don't leave home without my face wash, creams, and night and day time routine. This is a brand I trust my skin with since 2015 and it's put together in the perfect travel (TSA approved!) size!

What to Pack for Men for Christmas Markets

Long Sleeve Shirts – Michael has these in multiple colors. It's pretty much all he wears. It's great for layering too. Lots of color options to choose from too!

Columbia Pants – My husband has these in every available color. LITERALLY. He lives in these. And he puts thermal underwear underneath for the cold.

Thermal Underwear – Michael has this in black and gray and he also wore this when dog sledding in negative 40 degree weather! It works!

Fleece – I wish I could count how many times he's worn this fleece. It's in the hundreds. IT's practical and has pockets and keeps you warm.

Coat – Let me tell you something, this man wears the same coat since middle school. OKAY? If you buy a good coat, it can last. He recommends one with a good. This one is a great price!

Shoes – Michael loves these shoes because he thinks they are fancy enough to wear to dinner but comfortable enough to walk cobblestone streets all day.

Other items you might want to pack

Tripod – This is my husband's most sought after Tripod. He researched it for months and loves it.

Backpack – you don't want to lug all your Christmas market goodies in your hands, so bring a back pack. Bonus points, this also has water. Which is sometimes hard to come by in Europe.

Hand Warmers – if you are really prone to getting cold, try these easy, cheap hand warmers. We brought these while we dog sledding in -40 degree weather in Minnesota and they worked like a charm!

When I imagine the ultimate Christmas holiday destination, it includes snow-capped mountains, historic buildings decorated with twinkling lights, and of course, magical Christmas markets. There’s arguably no country in the world that fits this definition better than Switzerland, with its snow-covered Swiss Alps, charming alpine towns, culturally-rich cities, and abundance of holiday markets.

I've rounded up the best Christmas Markets in Switzerland, sure to delight any and all ages!

Depending on the Swiss village, city, or region you visit during the holiday season, you’ll be able to enjoy magical Christmas memories: like a horse-drawn carriage ride through the snow or an unforgettable family ski holiday.

As a connoisseur of European Christmas markets, some of my most memorable Swiss experiences have been enjoyed perusing the traditional wooden stalls for unique gifts and snacking on traditional holiday treats.

Fortunately, wherever you find yourself in the country during the holiday season, whether in the capital city of Bern or on a ski holiday in the Alps, you’re guaranteed to find a festive holiday market nearby. This guide will direct you to my 10 favorite Christmas markets across the European winter wonderland known as Switzerland.

Now let's get to 10 of the best Christmas markets in Switzerland that are sure to make your holidays wonderful!

Basel Christmas Market, Basel

Basel’s location as the crossroads of three countries makes it a melting pot of Swiss, French, and German cultures. That diversity and cultural uniqueness forms the foundation for one of my favorite holiday markets in all of Switzerland, the Basel Christmas Market.

This market is located in the center of the city and in the heart of Old Town, and includes two markets at Barfusserplatz and Munsterplatz. The markets are easy to access, but once you arrive, you’ll probably feel like you’ve been dropped off at a slightly more festive version of the North Pole.

The towering Christmas tree on the Munsterplatz welcomes visitors, and the clinking of gluhwein mugs reminds you that the holidays aren’t just fun for little ones. Vendors sell everything from hand-carved toys and trinkets to collectable Christmas items, and the twinkling lights overhead spark even more holiday cheer. The famous tree and gleaming Christmas Pyramid at the center of the Barfusserplatz provide the perfect backdrop for holiday photos. There are countless memories to be made at what is often considered the oldest Christmas market in all of Switzerland.

Basel Christmas Market 2026 dates: November 26th through December 23rd, 2026. Open daily 11am-8:30pm. Dec. 23 at Munsterplatz, from 11am to 6pm, and Dec. 23 at Barfusserplatz, from 11am to 8pm. 

Waisenhausplatz, Bern

Bern, Switzerland’s beautiful capital city, is known for being more tranquil than many of the world’s other capitals, and that’s much of what made me fall in love with it. While there’s still a bit of a hustle and bustle, Bern shines more in its cultural richness than its towering skyscrapers. That cultural richness is what makes the Waisenhausplatz Christmas market so special.

Waisenhausplatz is the more traditional of Bern’s two famous holiday markets. It’s bordered by a fence of fir tree branches, which surround the market with the look and smell of the holiday season. Inside the fir fence, you’ll find traditional wooden stalls selling everything from everyday items and gifts to ornaments and other Christmas decorations. Hot foods and traditional holiday snacks are also served from a variety of stalls, so be sure to visit with an empty stomach.

Waisenhausplatz Christmas market 2026 dates and times: Nov 27 – Dec 24, 2026. Open Monday–Saturday 10am–8pm, Sunday 10am–6pm, and 10am–5pm on Dec 24. The market returns for the Altjahresmarkt from Dec 28 – 31.

Christkindlimarket, Zurich

Zurich is the largest and most bustling city in Switzerland, and its famed Christmas market doesn’t fall short on those big city lights. This market is actually more known for its glitz and glam than anything, with a giant, sparkling Christmas tree at the heart of it all.

Zurich’s Christmas market (now known as Polarzauber) is one of Europe’s largest indoor markets, and it’s easily accessed by train, because it’s actually held directly inside the main train station. Here, you can wander the labyrinth of stalls, snack on cinnamon-topped baked goods, snap photos in front of the towering Christmas tree, and make memories sipping hot mulled wine with friends. And if you’re looking to knock out all of your holiday shopping in one place with unique handmade gifts, there’s no better market in the country to visit than this one in the heart of Zurich.

Zurich Christkindlimarkt (now called Polarzauber) dates 2026: 19th November to 24th December 2026. Opening times: 11am to 9pm. Closes at 10pm Thursday through Saturday and 4pm on the 24th December. Location: Inside Zurich's main train station (Hauptbahnhof)

Lucerne Christmas Market, Lucerne

Swiss locals and travelers from around the globe venture to the waterfront city of Lucerne for the annual Christmas Market in the heart of Old Town. From late November to Dec. 23, Franziskanerplatz becomes a miniature town of festively-decorated wooden stalls and vendors selling traditional Swiss holiday foods and drinks. Kids can sip on a sweet Christmas punch while parents savor hot mulled wine and shop for one-of-a-kind gifts from the more than 70 vendors.

It’s worth visiting the Lucerne Christmas Market for the festive feel alone. Watch as the little ones run to the Christmas carousel, which is assembled every year and turns to holiday music played by choirs and brass ensembles. If you’re feeling like even the slightest bit of a Scrooge this year, the Lucerne Christmas Market is guaranteed to spark your holiday spirit.

Also make sure to check out the covered bridge while you there, it's the oldest in Europe!

Lucerne Christmas Market dates: Thursday, December 3rd to Monday, December 21st, 2026

Lugano Christmas Market, Lugano

Your Christmas holiday travels may take you to the picture-perfect resort town of Lugano on the coast of Lake Como. While this city in southern Switzerland often feels more Italian than Swiss (it’s even Italian-speaking), it doesn’t lack any of the holiday charm you’re seeking. Even more, while the rest of the country is quite frigid during the winter months, Lugano remains mild, creating a more enticing atmosphere for shopping and dining outdoors.

Lugano’s Old Town area becomes a not-so-snowy winter wonderland during the Advent season, when festive holiday market stalls fill the streets. The stalls, offering handmade trinkets and traditional holiday treats, provide a welcome change from the countless high-end shops nearby. Of course, you can always duck into those when you need an extra-special gift. And don’t miss the massive Christmas tree with its twinkling lights in Piazza Riforma, which is often visited by swans from the lake, creating an even more photogenic (and adorable) backdrop. 

This market’s proximity to Italy also means you’ll enjoy lower prices than many other Swiss Christmas markets, so bring plenty of cash and be ready to shop. The Lugano Christmas Market also extends into January, which means it can be visited on your after-Christmas travels too. 

Lugano Christmas Market dates: 26th November 2026 into early January 2027

Einsiedeln Christmas Market, Einsiedeln

Not all of my favorite Christmas markets are characterized solely by what’s inside. Many times, the backdrop is much of what makes a particular holiday market so special, and that’s certainly the case in the charming municipality of Einsiedeln.

The Einsiedeln Christmas Market is appropriately located next to the town’s gingerbread museum, which is also a bakery and an ideal place to grab holiday baked goods before leaving. The market offers an intimate atmosphere, and its slightly smaller size only adds to the charm. But arguably even better than the festive stalls, decorations, and foods inside, is the backdrop of the snow-covered Einsiedeln Abbey. This Benedictine monastery, which has been visited by pilgrims for more than 1,000 years, offers unrivaled history and charm, and the surrounding jagged mountain tops add even more to the festive spirit and beauty. 

The Einsiedeln Christmas Market is only open for ten days during the Advent season, so this is a market you may need to adjust your holiday travel schedule to visit. 

Einsiedeln Christmas Market 2026 dates: Nov. 27, 2026 to Dec. 6, 2026

Christkindlimarkt Rapperswil, St Gallen

Thousands of holiday lights, and 700 stars shining over the square, welcome visitors to Christkindlimarkt Rapperswill in St Gallen, a historic city that takes Christmas seriously. Within the twinkling market, you’ll find more than 250 vendors, selling everything from holiday decorations to gifts and gourmet foods. I love watching the candle makers dip and decorate the candles they later sell in their booths.

The glimmering lights and choirs singing holiday carols can spark the Christmas spirit in even the most Scrooge-like visitors. Outside of the market, the city of St Gallen fully embraces the Christmas spirit with many restaurants offering special menus with traditional holiday foods. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been to St Gallen in the past, the city has an entirely different feel from late November to late December.

Christkindlimarkt Rapperswil 2026 dates: December 3rd until December 20th, 2026, with the main Christmas market running Wednesday, December 9th through Sunday, December 13th

Chur Christmas Market, Chur

What better place to experience Switzerland’s holiday charm than in the country’s oldest city? Chur, which often falls off the beaten tourist path, offers a historic backdrop for one of my favorite Christmas markets in the country — the Chur Christmas Market. 

The city’s fairytale-like Old Town hosts a Christmas market that seems to fall off the beaten path too, and that’s much of what makes it so special. Here, you can admire glistening holiday lights, shop to decorate your home for the holidays (or complete your Christmas list), and snack on traditional Swiss holiday eats. Discover the city’s rich history or embark from here on one of the country’s scenic winter train rides and make an entire getaway out of your visit to the charming Chur Christmas Market. 

Chur Christmas Market dates and times: 27 November – 23 December 2026

Schaffhausen Christmas Market, Stein am Rhein

The fairytale-like town of Stein am Rhein becomes even more magical during the holiday season, when the Schaffhausen Christmas Market opens and visitors come from around the world to soak in the holiday cheer. Parents can shop the arts, crafts, and spices until they drop and kids can ride the carousel, hop aboard the steam railway, or greet Santa Claus and his ponies (a different take on reindeer). 

The entire riverside town of Stein am Rhein embraces the Christmas spirit with its medieval buildings decorated in shining lights, and following the market, it’s an absolute must to walk the Rhine bridge, as its draped in holiday lights. Bring your camera, because the market, and all of Stein am Rhein are especially photogenic this time of year.

Stein am Rhein Christmas Market dates: December 2, 2026, to January 3, 2027 (Wednesday through Sunday)

Montreux Noel Christmas Market, Montreux

It may be the final entry on my list of the 10 best Christmas markets in Switzerland, but the Montreux Noel Christmas Market is arguably the top holiday market in the country. Much of the market’s fame comes from its postcard-worthy setting on the shore of Lake Geneva. Lavish hotels, which look more castles, and snow-capped mountain peaks serve as a backdrop for the lake and Switzerland’s most scenic Christmas market.

You can eat until you burst at the Montreux Noel Christmas Market, snacking on freshly-made crepes, candied nuts, and other traditional Swiss holiday eats. Shopping includes a variety of goods from vendors around the country and around the globe. For instance, I found Canadian maple syrup and hand-crafted gold bookmarks here. If you’re looking for a gift for that person who already has everything, this is the place to do your holiday shopping. 

Even better, you can break up your shopping and dining with trips to the wine-drinking igloo. The Montreux Noel Christmas Market is truly unlike any other in Switzerland, and that’s why it may be last but certainly not least.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN SWITZERLAND

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE VISITING CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN SWITZERLAND?

Christmas markets in Switzerland are similar to those across Europe and around the world. However, when I travel throughout Switzerland, I try to allow myself a little extra time to explore the cities in addition to the markets. Many Swiss cities take Christmas decorating seriously, like Stein am Rhein, so I like to allow myself a day or two extra to explore.

I also like to visit Christmas markets with plenty of cash on hand, since many vendors prefer cash or simply don’t accept credit card at all.

WHAT ARE THE DATES FOR THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS?

Most Christmas markets in Switzerland run from late November to late December, often closing on Dec. 23, or Dec. 24. However, some markets do run through the holidays into January, and others are open for just a few weeks preceding Christmas.

HOW MANY CHRISTMAS MARKETS ARE THERE IN SWITZERLAND?

Venture throughout Switzerland, and you’ll find Christmas markets everywhere from the largest city squares to the tiniest villages. It’s difficult to say exactly how many Christmas markets there are in the country, but if you find yourself in Switzerland during the holidays, you’re guaranteed to locate a market nearby.

Some of my favorite smaller cities do not have Christmas markets but that shouldn't stop you from going! The town of Zermatt is a winter dream and I highly recommend it!

Updated for the 2026 Christmas market season! Most German Christmas markets open in the last week of November and run until just before Christmas. First Advent falls on November 29, 2026, so the famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt opens on Friday, November 27. My Tips for Christmas Market Shopping in 2026

• Bring cash. More stalls take cards every year, but plenty of smaller vendors are still cash only.
• Your Glühwein comes with a mug deposit (Pfand). Return the mug to get your deposit back, or keep it as your souvenir!
• Go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Weekends, especially in December, get very crowded.
• Ask vendors to wrap fragile items like glass ornaments well, and pack them in the middle of your suitcase between soft clothes.
• Look for handmade pieces from the artisans themselves. Many wooden pieces come from the Erzgebirge region, the traditional home of German nutcrackers, pyramids, and candle arches.

Each market offers different things that you can buy so explore as many markets as you can!

You're bursting with Yuletide cheer and you're gawking at the beautiful Christmas decorations. But, what do you eat?! There are so many smells! And what's the best drink? I'm here to tell you what to eat and drink at German Christmas markets. Having been to over 100 Christmas markets in Europe, I'm pointing you in the right direction.

Updated for 2026: Most German Christmas markets open in late November 2026 (the first Sunday of Advent is November 29) and run until just before Christmas, with a handful staying open into early January. Prices below are typical ranges from recent seasons – expect them to creep up a little each year, and always bring some cash for the smaller stalls.

I'm bringing you the 25 foods (and drinks!) you must try at a German Christmas Market.

The most common food items sold at German Christmas markets include Bratwurst, Frikadella, Pommes Frites, Maroni, Käsespätzle, Kartoffel puffer, Germknödel, along with glühwein, aka mulled wine. But each market has their own specialty and take on food for Christmas.

There's nothing in the world quite like the magic at the Christmas markets. And part of that joy is brought in the form of the incredible food. From the fragrant spiced nuts, traditional German meats, and dangerously delicious alcoholic Glühwein, there's no shortage of things to try while you're at the Xmas Market. Whether you crave savory or sweet you can find it all! Plus plenty of souvenir foods to take home.

In Germany, the chestnuts really are roasting on an open fire, but that's not the only thing to try! I'm breaking it down by drinks, food, and sweets. I hope you pack some Lycra, because you'll need your stretchy pants after attending the delicious Christmas market!

What to Drink at the Christmas Market

Glühwein

As a bonafide Christmas Market freak, as soon as the first market opens my first stop is Glühwein. The best part about Christmas is that it's truly 5 o'Clock somewhere, all day long. Drinking the hot, mulled wine is the perfect way to get into the spirit. The word “Glühwein” can be translated into English as glow wine which derived from the red hot irons used to heat up the wine as they did in Medieval times, dating back to 1420.

Now, you'll find a variety of Glühwein sold throughout the markets. Traditionally, the drink is a mix of red wine combined with spices like cinnamon, star anise, vanilla, and sugar. You can find many different versions of Glühwein, and each market, and even stall, has their own take. You'll find Glühwein available in a few different flavors like cherry, apple, or blueberry, and even a white Glühwein. Of course, if you want to take it up a notch, you can add an extra shot to your Glühwein.

Don't forget to try the famous Feuerzangenbowle – hard to say, delicious to try! This is where they pour the steaming rum over sugar that then melts into the wine and fuses the flavors together. It's fantastic!

There is also Kinderpunsch, which is non-alcoholic Glühwein.

When you buy a drink it comes with a “pfand”, you pay extra so that you bring the cup back. OR, you can always keep it as a souvenir from the market! Each cup is produced with a different motif and often has the city name and the date. We have cups from markets all across the continent and it's a great memento.

Eierpunsch

Similar to eggnog, this warm drink is made of egg yolks and cream and alcohol. This isn't my drink of choice, but it's worth it to give it a try, especially if you're a fan of eggnog.

Heiße Schokolade – Hot Chocolate

The great thing about German Christmas markets? You can make almost any drink alcoholic. Add in a shot of rum or baileys and you're in for a treat.

This very strong drink is often served like a shot and is fruit flavored. You could add this on top of your Glühwein or just shoot it straight! Peach schnapps is one of my favorites.

Savory food favorites at the German Christmas Markets

Sausage – Bratwurst

No, I'm not saying German sausage is the worst, sausage in Germany is called “wurst.” And to be honest, it's some of the best around. Germany is known for its wonderful sausage and the Christmas markets bring out the best. There are many different kinds to try (40, in fact!) and it's often served on a bun with mustard and onions. You can also try Currywurst which is a Berlin specialty of Bratwurst cut into pieces and served with curry on top. Of course, you can also try the “half meter wiener” – a 1/2 meter of bratwurst which is huge and the perfect picture opp!

Frikadella

One of my favorite foods at the Christmas markets are these hamburgers made with pork. Usually served with onions and mustard they make for the perfect hearty meal. You'll often see a huge pan of onions roasting next to these filling meats.

Pommes Frites – Fries

I know what you're thinking, Helene, it's just fries? Yes, but no. Everyone loves a good fry, and the German Christmas Markets have the best ones I've ever tasted (in case you're wondering Heidelberg's market near the Church has my favorite!). Thick cut pommes seasoned and often topped with mayo will certainly cure what ails you. It also goes very well with your cup of Glühwein.

Maroni – Roasted Chestnuts

Little stalls or stands serve up the hot chestnuts roasting, quite literally, on an open fire. They are quite large and melt in your mouth. A perfect snack for the cold temperatures.

Potato Pancakes – Reibekuchen & Kartoffelpuffer

This one is a heavy dish so I suggest to share it with a friend! But man, is it worth the calories. Dripping in oil it's like flattened hashbrowns, fried up and served hot. This can be topped with your choice of garlic sauce or apple sauce. It sounds weird, but it's delicious! If you'd rather have something slightly more light, try the Kartoffellanzen, a spiraled potato, fried and seasoned. I said slightly more light.

Käsespätzle

Remember as a kid when you'd eat a whole box of macaroni and cheese for dinner? This is like that, except better. Noodles slathered in a variety of cheeses and topped with onion. It's one of my favorite foods and a traditional German staple. When I first moved abroad people told me food in Germany wasn't that good. They were wrong, and I knew it as soon as I took a bite of Käsespätzle.

Lángos

This is a Hungarian dish and very delicious. A flat piece of dough is fried and then topped with sour cream and cheese. You can also add some other toppings such as vegetables or meat.

Spiessbraten

Delicious roasted porks are seen spinning on spits on top of a flame. Then, they are brought to the counter, cut and served on soft rolls. I always ask for an additional bit of crispy pork on top! This savory specialty is great if you've had your fill of wursts.

Raclette

If you like cheese and bread then there's nothing better than when its melted and served warm. My mouth is watering as I type out these very words! A typical French and Swiss dish, it's made its way over to Germany and I'm glad to see it. You can also add toppings if you choose but you'll find the traditional raclette is the perfect pick-me-up after one too many Glühweins.

Flammkuchen

This is an Alsatian specialty (the region that borders France and Germany) and combines their traditions. Think of it like a flatbread pizza: a thin crust topped with crème fraîche, cheese, onions, and bacon. There are of course other toppings you can choose from, but I always go with the traditional.

Grilled Fish

Many markets such as the one in Baden Baden offer fresh fish roasting on a flame. You'll sometimes see salmon and even smoked eels. It's wildly popular with some and others pass. This is a traditional dish in many of the German festivals and is worth the try.

Sweet treats to try at the German Christmas Market

Candied Nuts – Mandeln

The most fragrant and tempting smell of all: candied nuts. Sold in a variety of flavors and nuts, you cannot go wrong with this delicious, warm treat. Many stalls offer unique flavors like wedding cake, Baileys, or hot chocolate. The nuts are roasted in a pan with the sugary mix and wrapped up in paper. It's difficult to resist the sweet smelling nuts as you stroll down the cobblestone streets.

Price – typically €2 – €6 depending on the size of bag you get.

Schaumkuss or Schokokuss

The best way to describe this dessert is to take marshmallow fluff, then cover it in chocolate, and eat a dozen. Really, these are inexpensive and are so light and fluffy. I get one almost every time I go to a Christmas market.

Germknödel

This popular round dumpling is a German classic and usually filled with jam and topped with vanilla cream sauce. It’s not overly sweet but a nice addition to your mulled wine.

Stollen – German Christmas Cake

This is one of the oldest traditions in German history- dating back to 1329! This cake is often a dense batter filled with nuts or fruit and dusted in powdered sugar. Legend goes that the shape of a Stollen looked like baby Jesus wrapped up in a blanket! Dresden is known for the most popular Stollen.

Gingerbread – Lebkuchen

Often adorning stalls and sold in the shape of a heart, these are sold throughout the market. While I love homemade gingerbread, I find the market gingerbread to be very dry and not sweet enough. Stick with the candied nuts! They also like to sell it in heart shapes, wrapped in plastic, with words written on the cookie. I can’t say these are very tasty, but they are pretty!

Crepes

Not just found in France! This thin pancake is a delicious treat that's easy to eat. Rolled up with your choice of Nutella, cinnamon, sugar, or honey, anyone can get their fill from this simple classic.

Marzipan

Michael goes crazy for this treat every year! It looks like dough but it's a mix of almonds, honey, sugar, and eggs. Often they will sell “Marzipan potatoes” or it can be in a number of different shapes.

Kürtőskalács – Baumstriezel – Chimney Cake

This is a Hungarian and (more recently) Czech treat but is now spread over to the German and other European Christmas markets. For good reason, it's tasty! Dough is wrapped around an iron and then roasted and dusted with cinnamon and sugar.

Donuts

The best donut I've ever had in my LIFE was at the Christmas market in Helsinki, Finland. It was so good we went back for more… and more. The donuts sold at the markets are also great and often very different from American donuts. I love the little donut holes, very light and fluffy.

Fruchtspieße – Chocolate Covered Fruit

Take delicious strawberries then cover them in chocolate and put them on a stick and you have Fruchtspieße. Often displayed in chilled cases these are a refreshing dessert if you're needing something to cool down. You can also go for the Candied apples (paradiesäpfel) if you like.

There's also a variety of many other treats like candies, cookies, and more! Be on the lookout for the chocolate made to look like tools – they are so lifelike.

What's it like to work at a stall for Christmas markets?

Many of the stalls are family owned. You'll often see an array of generations that work behind the counter cooking food, taking orders, and payments. We also spoke with some younger workers who said it was a great job to have during the holiday break since you could make some money while you're off from University.

It's estimated that 188,000 people work at over 2,500 markets across Germany alone! They generate billions (yes, with a b!) of dollars each year.

Nestled on the banks of a river is the beautiful, romantic town of Heidelberg, Germany. A fairytale town any time of year, but during Christmas, it transforms into a holiday paradise. The “Weihnachtsmarkt,” as it's referred to in German is one of the most magical places for Christmas.

The small town of Heidelberg, Germany packs a punch when it comes to the beautiful and historical Christmas market. With five different squares to choose from, over 140 stalls, and an ice skating rink beneath the castle, this is my favorite Christmas market in all of Europe!

From the scents of the roasting chestnuts, sloshing back hot mulled wine (Glühwein), the glow of the castle above, and the excitement from people all ages seems to swirl in the happy feeling of Christmas. Heidelberg's Christmas market is not to be missed. I've got everything you need to make the most out of your time in Heidelberg. From the dates and times, locations, and tips to ensure you get the best from this traditional German Christmas market.

Heidelberg Christmas Market Dates

Despite Heidelberg being a medium sized city, the Christmas market stays open all season long. There's even a beautiful little market that stays open past Christmas! So if you're looking for a market after the holidays, check this out.

The Christmas market in Heidelberg is open November 23 – December 22, 2026. There are a couple markets that are open through January 1, 2027.

The market times are from Sunday through Friday from 11am to 9pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 10pm.

The “Winterwaeldchen” (winter woods at Kornmarkt) and the market at Bismarckplatz have extended dates and stay open through January 1, 2027 (double-check hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day). In past years, Christmas on Ice at Karlsplatz has also stayed open until New Year's, so it's worth checking if you're visiting after Christmas.

Why the Heidelberg Christmas Market

It's not quite as glitzy or glamorous as other markets, but Heidelberg has a unique and traditional charm that extends throughout the city. The enchanting wooden huts are ornately decorated with beautiful pine, Santas, reindeer, ornaments, and ribbon.

I've added Heidelberg's Christmas market as one of the best in all of Europe. It's not particularly grand, but it's so well done, easily accessible, traditional, and just a great example of a Christmas market. Plus, it's simple to get to all the markets in Heidelberg by walking: start at Bismarckplatz, then head to Anatomiegarten, stroll over to Universitätsplatz, Marktplatz, Kornmarkt, and then Karlsplatz.

Each stall is different from the next, offering you the feeling like you're stepping back in time and experiencing a market dating back to the 1600s. With the glow of the castle above you, and the yuletide cheer all around, you can't help but feel the magic of Christmas.

Where is the Christmas market in Heidelberg?

Set in Heidelberg's old town (Alstadt) and taking place throughout the Main Street (Haupstrasse) you'll find yuletide cheer throughout the small city. There are five squares throughout the town that make up the Weihnachtsmarkt. Kornmarkt, Marktplatz, Universitätsplatz, Anatomiegarten, and Bismarckplatz. The map below lists out the top spots for the Christmas market.

Heidelberg's Open-Air Ice-Skating rink is open from November 25 to January 6th from 10am to 10pm. Called “Germany's most beautiful ice-rink” you'll find it at Karlsplatz, directly below the castle on the Hauptstrasse.

There's also a smaller market open during a few weekends during the season at the Neuburg Abbey just down the river. I'll discuss all the markets in depth below!

How to get to the market?

The great thing about the markets is that it's all walkable. If taking the train, car, or tram, you'll head to Bismarkplatz and from here you can walk to all the different squares.

What to eat at Heidelberg's Christmas market?

You'll find traditional German Christmas market foods to try. My personal top 25 foods can be found here. In particular at Heidelberg's market I adore the French Fries at Marktplatz, the schokokuss, the delicious frikadella, and bratwurst.

Is there a Christmas market at the castle?

There is no longer a Christmas market at Heidelberg's castle (we were told it disturbed the bats), but I still recommend that you head up to the castle and gardens for a unique view of the city below. It's particularly lovely at Christmas as you can see the warm glow of the lights on the Hauptstrasse.

How much time to spend?

I personally went to the Christmas market in Heidelberg 19 days last year. But that's because I could take a five minute bike ride over from my apartment. Because Heidelberg is such a beautiful city I recommend at least 2-3 days to experience the magic at Christmas.

I suggest at least 3-4 hours at the market to get the best experience. Seeing the market transform from day to night is really beautiful! I highly recommend checking it out at night to see the castle lit up above the ice rink and the twinkle lights come on.

What to do at the Heidelberg Christmas Market

I've been to many Christmas markets across Europe and Heidelberg remains my favorite. Granted, I'm a bit biased as I lived here, but there's just a feeling of happiness that surrounds you as you walk the cobbled streets and glance up at the magnificent castle. Heidelberg is a perfect sized town – not too big so you can easily get around, and not too small so that the Christmas market and shops are open the whole season long.

I've devised an itinerary so you can make sure to get the most out of your time.

As I mentioned, there are five different areas for the Christmas market: Kornmarkt, Marktplatz, Universitätsplatz, Anatomiegarten, and Bismarckplatz. There's also Karlsplatz for the ice rink. Each one is unique and it's worth it to visit them all. Here's a guide to each of Heidelberg's Christmas markets and what you can expect at each!

Bismarckplatz

You'll most likely start at Bismarckplatz, this is the main hub where many of the trams converge. It's also the top of the Haupstrasse leading into the old town. Surrounded by bigger department stores like Galleria Kaukof and H&M, you'll find a few stands selling food and knick-knacks. There's a particularly good fire roasted fish stall here.

Anatomiegarten

As you continue walking down you'll pass well lit stores and three story buildings, often with people living at the top. Next, you'll find the small market of Anatomiegarten. Facing the street, this offers some unique crafts like African drums and figurines as well as sweets and treats. Here they also sell personalized Glühwein mugs where you can get your name painted on a cup.

Just behind the market you'll see many statues tucked away that are worth a glance. Next, you'll continue walking down the Hauptstrasse to Heidelberg's bigger Christmas markets, Universitätsplatz.

Universitätsplatz

Universitätplatz is one of my favorite markets. It opens with an indoor shopping area selling teas and coffee. After you walk out, you'll find some of the loveliest stalls selling handmade, wooden ornaments, paper stars that light up from within, and gingerbread.

As you keep walking down to the right, there's a stall that sells donuts in paper sacks that are divine! You'll also find sheepskin everything – rugs, liners for baby carriages, shoes, and gloves. We always manage to pick something up from there.

There is a carousel that's perfect for the kids at Universitätplatz. Here, there are also a few places to watch the glow of the warm light from the carousel and warm up with some Glühwein. There's a stand just near the carousel that offers some unique flavors that I love! You'll also find a Feuerzangenbowle stall here. They flambe rum on large sugar blocks hung over the Glühwein which melt into the hot wine adding a wonderful flavor.  

Marktplatz

Marktplatz is one of the largest markets in Heidelberg and takes place right near the large church. Here, you'll also find the iconic, wooden windmill selling Glühwein of all different flavors. There's a carousel here as well to keep the kids entertained. Or, you can also have them meet Santa! At a small indoor tent Santa is often here to listen to the kid's wishes.

There's a lovely shop here selling hand-blown and hand-painted ornaments that would make for a great souvenir. Keep on walking and you'll find a shop selling liquors of all flavors in decorative, glass holders of all shapes and sizes.

Kornmarkt

If you're interested in more “rides” check out the small train ride for kids at Kornmarkt which is a beautiful, little market with Christmas trees all around. Here, there are also handmade crafts and a man is often there creating decorative wooden bowls while you peruse the shops. In the middle you'll see the statue of Madonna and start to get a view of the castle.

Karlsplatz

Keep walking down to the large square, Karlsplatz, where you'll find the ice rink and a few stalls selling food and drink. This is a great place to ice skate – no matter your age and you can look up to see the towers of the sandstone castle above.

I really enjoyed skating and listening to the music. I'd occasionally stop for a sip of hot Glühwein!

After you've done your shopping at the Christmas market, make sure to stop by the famous Christmas store, Käthe Wohlfahrt. The main store is in Rothenburg, and year round it sells everything Christmas. Make sure to head in to see the large revolving Christmas tree that goes up two stories! This is also a great place to pick up a handmade stein.

Not only is the Christmas market lively and lovely, but the entire city is strung up with lights. Shops along the Hauptstrasse, Europe's longest pedestrian zone, have festive decor and pretty stars are hung between the alleyways and streets.

There's lots of great tours, museums, and things to do in Heidelberg! One its claims to fame is the largest wine barrel inside the Heidelberg Castle. You can see my full guide on what to do in Heidelberg here.

Where to Stay in Heidelberg

I suggest staying right on the Haupstrasse in the Alstadt (old town) so you can be close to the markets as well as most of the bars and restaurants around town.

Hotel Ritter – A beautiful sandstone building and historic hotel on the main street. It's the only building that didn't burn down in the first from the 1700s!

Crowne Plaza– right near Bizmarkplatz and near the tram line. 4-star hotel with all the amenities.

Backmulde – on the main street is the 17th century hotel that makes you feel like you're in Heidelberg at that time!

Hotel B & B – not in the city center but a good budget hotel that we like!

Tips for Making the Most Out of the Christmas Market

• Make sure to dress warmly. It can get very, very cold. So bring a hat, gloves, warm socks, boots, thick pants, and a coat. I also suggest hand warmers.

• The markets can get extremely crowded. To avoid the crowds, go during the weekday or during the day. That's your best bet to avoid the masses.

• You most likely will take some trinkets home so bring a small, collapsible bag so you can easily carry your items.

• Don't forget to return your Glühwein mugs! Most of the drinks have a “pfand” where you pay a couple extra bucks to keep the cup. If you have quite a few glasses of Glühwein, you might not need all those cups. Return it so you can get the cash back.

• Most of the markets are cash only. Bring cash. There are ATMs nearby but they tend to get quite busy.

• There are a few markets that stay open AFTER Christmas in Heidelberg! You can go skating at least a week after Christmas too.

What to buy at the Christmas market

First, your Glühwein mug is the perfect souvenir. These change year after year and are marked with the date.

I also suggest something sheepskin. These last for years and are a beautiful home accessory. I also love the sheepskin gloves- extremely warm.

The paper stars are some of my favorites because you can put these in your house all year long. They fold easily so this is the perfect thing to put in a suitcase.

Handmade ornaments are the perfect momento. There are also lots of handmade wooden crafts or ceramic houses that I absolutely love for Christmas decor.

Food is a great gift too. You can see the chocolate tools that look so real it will shock anyone you give it to.

Christmas Markets Near Heidelberg

The wonderful thing about the Heidelberg Christmas market is not only its charm, but it's location! You're about an hour away from the best markets in France, Strasbourg and Colmar as well as other incredible German Christmas markets like Cologne, Speyer, and Baden-Baden. AND, you're just about 2 hours away from the border of Switzerland and the beautiful Basel Christmas market.

One you must go to is the Stift Neuburg Market at Kloster Neuburg (Neuburg Abbey). This is a monastery and brewery that offers a small Christmas market. You can easily take the tram 10 minutes down the Neckar river and head to this market. They often sell unique crafts and food.

Very near Heidelberg you have Mannheim's Christmas market in the city center near the water tower. This is an excellent market, and just a quick 20 minute train ride away.

Or, head to Schwetzingen for a Christmas market at the palace, about 20 minutes away by train.

There are also smaller markets right near Heidelberg (10 or so minutes away) that take place throughout the Christmas season or on the weekend.

There's never a bad time to get to the romantic city of Heidelberg, but there is something special about Christmas.

Since there are seven markets throughout the city of Cologne, I'll be giving you exact dates below for each! But here's a general look. The 2026 Christmas Market dates for Cologne are November 16 to December 23, 2026, and the Gnome Market and Harbor Market stay open into early January 2027. Official tourism website.

🎄 Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market

Picture this: the Cologne Cathedral towering above you, lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, as you wander through one of the most iconic Christmas markets in Europe. The market sits right next to the cathedral, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.

• Dates: November 16 – December 23, 2026 (closed November 22)
• Hours: Sunday-Wednesday: 11 am – 9 pm; Thursday-Friday: 11 am – 10 pm; Saturday: 10 am – 10 pm
• Location: Right next to the Cologne Cathedral

The highlight? The towering Christmas tree in the center of the market and live music performances that will sweep you off your feet. Yes, it’s crowded, but that’s part of the charm. Plus, the view of the cathedral is breathtaking, especially at sunset when the market glows beneath the Gothic spires.

🎄 Heinzels Wintermärchen (The Gnome Market)

This one is pure fun. If you love whimsy, this is where you need to be. The Gnome Market is split into two sections: Alter Markt and Heumarkt. Expect Ferris wheels, ice skating rinks, and the most charming little gnome figurines scattered throughout the market. It feels like you’ve stepped into a storybook, and the gnomes are there to guide you through.

My top tip: KEEP WALKING. People often think this market is just half of the stalls with the gorgeous twinking candles. You have to keep walking to get to the skating rink.

This is hands down my favorite market. Between the ice rink, the adorable gnome décor, and the endless food stalls, it’s the kind of place that will make you feel like a kid again. Don’t leave without grabbing a cup of mulled wine and taking a ride on the carousel!

🎄 Markt der Engel (The Angel Market)

Now, imagine walking into a forest of twinkling white lights. The Angel Market is sophisticated and dreamy, filled with artisan stalls and elegant Christmas decorations. If you’re a fan of unique, handmade gifts, this is your spot. It’s a little more refined than the Gnome Market but just as magical.

Pro Tip: The train makes stops at the Cathedral, Old Town, Neumarkt, and Harbor Market, so you can easily plan your route. We picked it up for the first time in front of the cathedral—super fun and a great way to rest your feet while still soaking in the festive spirit!

Cologne is already a beautiful city – gargantuan twin-spired cathedral, next to the mighty Rhine River, and full of Gothic architecture in a picturesque old town. But the Christmas market takes it over the top. Which is why Cologne is at the top of my list for best Christmas markets in Germany.

Brimming with charm and cheer, there are multiple markets spread throughout the city of Cologne. There are seven markets throughout the city, each bringing a totally different vibe and atmosphere. The market in front of the cathedral is one of the most popular, and for good reason. Beautiful, traditional wood stalls surround a stage with the backdrop of the cathedral.

Also, not to be missed is the Old Christmas market, aka the Alter Market near town all. This adorable market looks straight out of a story book with gnomes (Heinzelmännchen) perched on rooftops.

Lastly, you must visit the Angel's Christmas market. This is the oldest market, held in Neumarkt. You'll see women dressed up as angel's handing out treats to children and sparking white lights atop all the stalls. It's breathtaking.

Cologne Christmas Market 2026 dates and times: Mon, Nov 16, 2026 – Wed, Dec 23, 2026 (closed Sun, Nov 22). Open 11am to 9pm Sunday through Wednesday, 11am to 10pm Thursday & Friday, and 10am to 10pm on Saturdays. Some of Cologne's other markets open as early as Nov 13, and the Old Town market runs until Jan 10, 2027!

2. Nuremburg

Nuremburg: best traditional Christmas market in Germany! Nuremburg's Christmas market is one of the oldest and most famous German markets, dating back to 1530. The red and white stalls bring up a nostalgia that echo back to the original Christmas markets that started here hundreds of years ago.

This traditional market offers a beautiful setting in front of the Church of Our Lady with a special kid's choir that performs throughout the season at the “Christkindlesmarkt.” The Christkind is a symbol for Nuremburg and dates back to the idea that she brings children their Christmas gift.

Of all the German Christmas markets this is one of my favorites.

3. Heidelberg

Heidelberg: best food at a Christas market in Germany! Now if you think I'm biased because I lived in Heidelberg, then you're absolutely right. HOWEVER, there is something so perfect about this Christmas market. Taking place throughout the Hauptstrasse, you'll find markets dotted along the pedestrian street. Traditional in style, this Christmas market is oozing with charm. See my full guide to Heidelberg's Christmas Market here!

There are plenty of shops, food, and Glühwein, and even an ice skating rink with a castle view. But my favorite aspect are the ornate wooden stalls. Each city has its own unique take on decor, and Heidelberg’s is my favorite. Hand carved stalls bursting with Santas, lights, and full size reindeer. They are some of the most detailed of all the Christmas markets I’ve attended.

Heidelberg Christmas Market 2026 dates and times: Mon, Nov 23, 2026 – Tue, Dec 22, 2026 from 11am to 9pm (Saturdays until 10pm). The markets at Bismarckplatz and the Winterwäldchen at Kornmarkt stay open until January 1, 2027!

4. Aachen

Aachen: best Christmas market spirit! Decked out with twinkling lights and lavish squares, your eyes will be a-glow from the moment you arrive in Aachen. The Aachen Town Hall is transformed to a festive wonderland, the city is brimming with beauty and twinkling lights, and people from all over come to join in on the merriment of the season.

Aachen is known as the historic city of Charlemagne’s reign, but in recent years, they’ve become a major destination for Christmas. With beautiful Roman ruins and a UNESCO world heritage cathedral, you really can’t go wrong visiting Aachen. 

What I love about Aachen’s market is that it’s spread throughout the city but you an get to each spot by walking! The markets are centered around Aachen Cathedral, Charlemagne Centre, and Aachen town hall. Aachener Printen (gingerbread) follow you wherever you go and will direct you towards the market. 

Aachen's Christmas market is one of the best decorated and loveliest Christmas markets in Germany. You just have to see it for yourself!

5. Trier

The Christmas market in Trier is set against the romantic backdrop of the Moselle river and the medieval Main Market. The 95 attractively decorated booths provide a perfect setting for this wonderful event, with Trier Cathedral providing an impressive backdrop.

The program changes daily at the Trier Christmas Market, so there's always something new for visitors to enjoy. Whether it's historical puppet theater or a star tenor performance, there's something for everyone in the family. In addition to delicious food and drink, arts and crafts from around the world are also available. The Trier Christmas Market is one of the most popular markets in Germany attracting thousands of visitors each year.

6. Munich

Munich: best themed Christmas markets! Munich is the jewel of Germany with a lovely garden, impressive buildings, and Oktoberfest celebration. The Marienplatz is already an exceptional example of European beauty. But the Christmas market in Munich is a feast for all the senses.

A spectacle of lights, traditional markets, and some out-there markets that take celebrating Christmas to a whole other level. Themed markets in Munich are some of the best Christmas markets in Germany and offer a different take on the traditional celebrations.

There's a Christmas market concert held in the city each day during the season, a Children's market, and the Tollwood Market is an ethnic festival with a look to celebrations of Christmas all over the world. There's also a gay Christmas market at Stephansplaz and a Medieval Christmas Market at Wittelsbacher Platz.

Munich Christmas Market 2026 dates: Fri, Nov 20, 2026 – Thu, Dec 24, 2026 (closed Sun, Nov 22). Times are Monday through Saturday 10am-9pm. Sunday 10am-8pm. Christmas Eve 10am-2pm.

7. Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden: best place to buy gifts at a Christmas market. This historic city is located just on the outskirts of the enchanting Black Forest (where so many fairytales come from!). Baden Baden has a market taking place on a long stretch just outside their old town.

You'll find over 100 stalls of arts and crafts, delicious food, and merry-go-rounds. Keeping their market simple and traditional you can find roasting fish or fragrant spiced nuts throughout the stalls. This market stays open a bit later in the year which is perfect if you're visiting just after Christmas!

Baden-Baden Christmas Market 2026 dates: Thu, Nov 26, 2026 – Wed, Jan 6, 2027. Open 11am to 9pm daily, with shorter hours on the holidays.

8. Frankfurt

I'm not even going to lie to you, I am not a big fan of Frankfurt in general. It just feels like a large city with skyscrapers. It doesn't hold the same charm as other cities seem to in Germany. With the CLEAR exception of Christmas.

I was pleasantly surprised but how well Frankfurt does Christmas. I mean… look at this view!

Plus, if you're coming to Germany from the USA, chances are you're going to fly in to Frankfurt. So, you might as well make the most of it and experience this beautiful Christmas market!

Frankfurt Christmas Market Dates for 2026: Mon, Nov 23, 2026 – Tue, Dec 22, 2026. Open Monday through Saturday 10am-9pm, Sunday 11am-9pm.

9. Speyer

Speyer: longest lasting Christmas market in Germany! (As in, the dates go over a month!) The yuletide cheer is always found in the pretty town of Speyer. The glistening stalls lovingly decorated are the perfect scene in front of the huge church. On weekends there's a craft market that takes place in City Hall with gifts and trinkets of all kinds.

This is a great market to attend in case your coming to Germany right after Christmas or New Years as the market stays open later.

Speyer Christmas Market 2026 dates: November 23, 2026 through January 9th, 2027 (limited hours Dec 24–26).

10. Dresden

Dresden: best Christmas market views. Dresden transforms itself into the capital of Christmas when the end of November rolls around. There are multiple markets throughout the city, but the Striezelmarkt is the most popular. This alpine-like market will make you feel like you've just come off the slopes.

The city also hosts gospel concerts and offers exhibitions and plays centered around Christmas tales. This is the largest Christmas Market in Germany and not to be missed! There are 11 (YES REALLY) markets throughout the city!

Dresden Christmas Market 2026 dates: Wed, Nov 25, 2026 – Thu, Dec 24, 2026. Open 10am to 9pm daily (Christmas Eve until 2pm).

11. Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Rothenburg: best medieval Christmas market. Rothenburg: best small Christmas market in Germany! This tiny town is still surrounded by it's town walls! Add in the Christmas market and it's truly as if you're stepping back to medieval times. The market is very small, but the whole city has a Christmas vibe. You'll find decorations at all the shops and stores. Don't forget to visit Käthe Wolfarht, a store selling everything you could possible want at Christmas!

Rothenburg feels like Christmas all year round with its Christmas museum and medieval setting, it's definitely one of the best German towns for Christmas markets. But there's something special about visiting “Reiterlesmarkt”, the Rothernburg Christmas Market is named after a legend that says a horse rider carried the souls of the dead. As Christianity spread through Europe, he transformed from a scary figure into a gentle man who gave gifts to all the people on earth.

Rothenburg Christmas Market 2026 dates: Friday, Nov 20, 2026 – Wednesday, Dec 23rd, 2026. Open 11am-7pm Sunday through Thursday, 11am-8pm Friday & Saturday.

12. Hamburg

The main market is in front of beautiful city hall and with the Rathaus as a backdrop it makes for an impressive scene. This is a tyoical, traditional Christmas market. But not to worry, Hamburg offers many unorthodox markets.

If you're looking for a more unique Christmas market experience, look no further than Hamburg's Santa Pauli. This year-round Halloween and Christmas market is located in the St. Pauli neighborhood, which is known for its nightlife and red-light district. This is quite literally a sex themed market!

You can find erotic Gingerbread men, sex toys and all sorts of other adult novelties. It's open year-round, but the Christmas market is definitely the most popular time to visit.

I love Hamburg in general as there are lots of interesting museums and places to visit.

Hamburg Christmas Market 2026 dates: Nov 23, 2026 – Dec 23rd, 2026. Open 11am to 9pm daily.

13. Essen

Known as the “International Christmas Market” Essen's market offers visitors a twist on the traditional Christmas market flair. It's one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany and well worth the stop.

The Essen Christmas market in the city center is quite spread out, with only a few steps between each square. The Kennedyplatz is the central focus point where you can leisurely stroll under a canopy of twinkling lights while being inspired by all of the different goods available from stalls representing 190 countries worldwide. You'll find handicrafts from Africa, Christmas decorations from Israel and jewelry form the Baltic States—just to name a few things!

Essen Christmas Market 2026 dates: Nov 13, 2026 – Dec 23, 2026. Open 12pm-9pm Sunday through Thursday, 12pm-10pm Friday & Saturday.

14. Stuttgart

Stuttgart: best Glühwein at a Christmas market! The Stuttgart Weihnachsmarkt is unique festival offering the traditional market vibes along with some unique traditions that make it extremely special. During Advent the Town Hall of Stuttgart is transformed into a huge Advent calendar. Each day a new door is opened revealing a new image and coat of arms showcasing one of Stuttgart's districts. 15. Berlin

Berlin: best big city Christmas market. Berlin is one of the most visited cities in Germany, and Christmas should be no exception. The baroque palace of Charlottenburg is a beautiful setting for a market complete with traditional stalls and decorated trees. There's an ice skating rink, ornament tents, and even heated areas with dinner served in a cozy nook.

There are over 60 different markets in Berlin so you literally can't miss it!

Berlin Christmas Market 2026 dates: The Charlottenburg Palace market runs November 23, 2026 – Sunday, Dec 27, 2026 (closed Dec 24).

16. Dusseldorf

A romantic atmosphere filled with cheer and the sweet smell of gingerbread waft throughout the town of Dusseldorf. You'll find the markets spread throughout the city with Königsallee one of the most popular spots. There's 7 different markets offering many different attractions. There's a magical dome of lights, an ice skating rink, and even a Ferris wheel! Dusseldorf is the perfect place to deck the halls.

Dusseldorf Christmas Market 2026 dates: Nov 19, 2026 – Dec 30th, 2026 (closed Nov 22 and Dec 25).

17. Mannheim

Located just 15 minutes away from Heidelberg, is the bigger and more industrial city of Mannheim. And what the city might lack in beauty, it makes up at Christmas. The large markets here offer tons of activities, live music, and even a fairy-tale corner. There's a section dedicated to many of the famous children's stories with live action characters to entertain the young and young at heart. The biggest market takes place right by the city's grand water tower and offers an array of treats and activities for all ages.

Mannheim Christmas Market 2026 dates: Nov 23, 2026 – Dec 23rd, 2026. Open 11am to 9pm daily.

18. Tübingen

For years, I was told to visit Tübingen's magical Christmas market. This is quintessential German Christmas charm and feels like you've stepped into a snow globe. The market is located on the historic marketplace in front of Tübingen castle. It's one of the oldest and most beautiful markets in Germany with a history dating back over 500 years.

There are around 80 stalls set up, which sell everything from handmade crafts to delicious food and drink. You'll find plenty of gingerbread, Lebkuchen and roasted almonds to keep your energy up while you explore the market. It's only open one weekend so you'll need to catch it while it's there!

19. Worms

Pronounced “Voms” this city is known for famous Martin Luther appearing before the emperor in 1571, kicking off the Reformation. Among the shiny Christmas decorations and carousels you can see the Luther Monument statues to commemorate the Protestant reformer. This pretty market has some lovely decorated stalls, a life-size manger scene, and plenty of places to drink hot Glühwein.

Worms Christmas Market 2026 dates: November 20, 2026 – Dec 23, 2026 (closed Nov 22).

20. Schwetzingen

If you want to go to a market on the site of a Baroque pink palace than look no further than Schwetzingen. This market is small, but is well decorated and has plenty of delicious food. Under white tents tinted yellow in the warm light, vendors sell mustard, honey, and even delicacies from places like Italy, France, and Hungary.

Schwetzingen Christmas Market 2026 dates: Expected to run Thursdays through Sundays from about Nov 26 – Dec 20, 2026 (official dates not announced yet).

21. Monschau, Germany

Head to the picturesque town of Monschau, Germany on the border of Belgium. Although this is a tiny village, it's well worth it to check out this picturesque, half-timbered town. A river rushes through town and cuts between gingerbread buildings in the Eifel region of Germany. The market only takes place on the weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from November 27th through December 20th, 2026. But even if you aren't there for a market, it's a Christmas town all along!

Here's a map and itinerary for the Christmas markets in Germany. My suggestion would be to fly in to Frankfurt, check out Frankfurt's market then head north to Cologne and Hamburg and Dusseldorf. Next, head south towards Heidelberg, Worms, Schwetzingen, and Mannheim. Then make your way further south for Baden-Baden, Stuttgart, and Tubingen.
