My Backup Routine

I'm sure by now you are backing up your data onto external devices right?

Well, here is my setup as it stands today. It may not be perfect but it is working for me and I am confident that I am pretty well protected.

First, I have two internal hard drives in my computer. The first is the main drive. The second uses Time Machine to backup everything on the main drive.

Second, I am a subscriber to CrashPlan.com. With this cloud service, I have unlimited backup from a single computer. Periodically throughout each day, the service runs a script to upload any new or updated data to their servers. At any time, I can download data as needed. A full restore is possible as well but will take several days at minimum. They also offer the option to send a hard drive to you with your data but that is an additional cost.

Third, I have two external drives that are clones of the main drive. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to daily copy the data to the drives. Weekly, the external drives are rotated off-site. This is to ensure that my data is secure in the case of a fire or a wall collapsing or something unforeseen.

Finally, I maintain two portable external drives that clone only pictures, music, and movies. These are the most important parts of my data that I want to ensure is available. Again, I rotate one drive off-site weekly. The data on these drives is maintained via Carbon Copy Cloner as well.

This is a working model but surely is not the most efficient. For a price, a much better system of backups could be applied.
