One country, two systems is dying," the writer, whose pen name read as "Leung Sun-yeung"- similar to the name of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying - said.<br /> "Hongkongers have nowhere to turn - either they fight the war and start a revolution, or they succumb themselves and be enslaved to the regime."<br /> The article did not elaborate on how a revolution should be organised.<br /> Yuen Yuen-lung, editor-in-chief of <i>Undergrad</i>, said the article was submitted to the editorial board before Leung attacked the publication in his policy address two weeks ago.<br /> "It was only an individual student's idea. It does not represent the editorial board's view," Yuen said.<br /> He said the board had reviewed the article carefully and decided it was acceptable for print, and he was not worried about further comments from Leung.<br /> The board clarified its stance in its editorial, however. It said that the magazine was only engaging in a debate on whether Hong Kong should be independent, rather than taking actions to make the city split from China.<br /> "To equate 'discussing independence' to 'taking steps to push for independence' is a fallacy," the editorial said.<br /> It also criticised the chief executive for stirring up an attack on students that resembled the Cultural Revolution.<br /> Pro-Beijing lawmaker Christopher Chung Shu-kun said the article that discussed revolution was like "science fiction". But, he suggested, democratic reform on these terms is surely better than none at all.<br /> The trouble is, simply dismissing his opponents as people who fail to "properly understand" the rules is not a strategy that has so far helped lift his dismal approval rating. His pan-democrats know what the basic law says about the role of the nominating committee through which Beijing exercises its veto over who can stand. They just don't like it. <br /> There's has never really been an argument about the technicalities of the constitution, but rather, it is one about a deep political aspiration. There are those who will push to do exactly that, to go back to the Hong Kong as it was before September 28. In that Hong Kong the tycoons ruled. They had a stranglehold on the lives of seven million people. They controlled our supermarkets, pharmacies, phone companies, property market and most other things you can think of.</strong><br /> <strong>High home prices forced ordinary families into tiny subdivided flats, it took 14 years of saving wages to afford a 400 sq ft flat, prison-sized flats of 180 sq ft had an asking price of HK$2 million, high rents forced small shops out of business, a million people earned less than HK$10,000 a month, the median wage was just HK$14,000, big business fought against the minimum wage, opposed standardised working hours, and wanted more mainland tourists even though the millions who came each year had already eroded our quality of life.</strong><br /> <strong>That was the Hong Kong before September 28. And it is the Hong Kong those with vested interests want to go back to when Occupy Central ends. But if they think they can pretend it is business as usual they've missed the message of Occupy. Once again I ask them to wake up and smell the revolution. Occupy is about much more than just democracy. It's about our wealth gap, stagnant wages, and young people stuck in dead-end jobs with no hope of upward mobility while our tycoons climb ever higher on the Forbes rich list.</strong><br /> <strong>Do you think Occupy would have erupted with such force if the government's rule book wasn't so skewed in favour of the ruling class? Would so many young people have so willingly braved the sting of tear gas if they weren't so disillusioned about their future? I had warned before of a lit fuse leading to a time bomb. Occupy turned out to be that bomb.</strong><br /> <strong>The old order has to go. How, I don't know, because it's too well entrenched. Like him or loathe him, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying did try to change things by taking on the tycoons with property cooling and other measures. He did take steps to tackle poverty and many other livelihood issues. That's why I found puzzling his remark that so-called genuine democracy would result in poor people dominating elections.</strong><br /> <strong>Can genuine democracy rid Hong Kong of the old order? Who knows, but it's pointless wondering about it. Beijing will never allow the Occupy movement's brand of democracy, which it fears will threaten national security. Our next chief executive will either be chosen through the existing undemocratic system if the Legislative Council votes down Beijing's reforms, or through one person one vote with screened candidates if Legco approves it.</strong><br /> <strong>Either way, the next leader and politicians will be playing with fire if they don't change their political playbook. Confrontation, Legco filibusters, grandstanding, and scoring cheap political points at the people's expense must give way to a new playbook on changing the old order. Photograph: AFP/Getty </span></figcaption></figure></div> </div> <div class="flexible-content-body" data-display-hint=""> Hong Kong’s former deputy leader Rafael Hui and property tycoon Thomas Kwok have been jailed after being convicted of corruption.<br /> Hui, 66, was sent to prison on Tuesday for seven and a half years after being found guilty of five graft charges, including misconduct in a public office, making him the highest-ranking official in Hong Kong’s history to be convicted of taking bribes.<br /> Kwok, 63 – who was joint chairman of Hong Kong’s biggest property company, Sun Hung Kai – was sentenced to five years after he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office over a series of payments totalling HK$8.5m to Hui.<br /> The seven-month trial centred on a total of HK$34m in handouts which the prosecution said were made to Hui by Kwok and his billionaire brother, Raymond, to be their “eyes and ears” in government.<br /> Raymond Kwok was cleared of all charges and Thomas cleared of two of the three against him.<br /> Judge Andrew Macrae told Hui before sentencing: “To know that the former number two in government had received bribes must be a deep disappointment to many people in Hong Kong,” he said. “It is vitally important in these times the Hong Kong government and business community remain and are seen to remain corruption free, particularly when the mainland is taking obvious and positive steps to eradicate the cancer of corruption in their own jurisdiction.”<br /> In sentencing Kwok, he said he had no doubt that he was “at heart a good man”. Macrae said he had considered a maximum sentence of six years but handed down one year less to account for Kwok’s good character.<br /> Before the sentencing hearing, Macrae had described the case as difficult. “One is dealing with otherwise decent men who are not young, but who have committed serious offences,” he said, adding that going to prison would be a “particular hardship” for the defendants.<br /> The payments to Hui were said to have been made via a series of complicated transactions involving middlemen.<br /> Two middlemen, Sun Hung Kai former director Thomas Chan and Francis Kwan – the former non-executive director of investment firm New Environmental Energy Holdings – were also found guilty of two charges.
