Me (frustrated): Why did you let so much stuff happen to me today?

GOD: What do you mean?

Me: Well I woke up late.

Me: My car took forever to start.

GOD: Okay....

Me (growling): At lunch, they made my sandwich wrong and I had to wait.

GOD: Hmmmm..

Me: On the way home, my phone... went dead, just as I picked up a call

GOD: All right Me (loudly): And to top it all off, when I got home, I just wanted to soak my feet in my foot massager and relax, but it wouldn't work. Nothing went right today! Why did you do that?

GOD: Well let me see..... the death angel was at your bed this morning and I had to send one of the other angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through that.

Me (humbled): Oh...

GOD: I didn't let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your ro ute that might have hit you if you were on the road.

Me (ashamed):

GOD: The first person who made your sandwich today was sick and I didn't want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn't afford to miss work.

Me (embarrassed): Oh.....

GOD: Your phone went dead because the person that was calling was going to give a false witness about what you said on that call, I didn't even let you talk to them so you would be covered.

Me (softly): I see God.

GOD: Oh and that foot massager, it had a short that was going to throw out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn't think you wanted to be in t he dark.

Me: I'm sorry God.

GOD: Don't be sorry, just learn to TRUST ME IN ALL THINGS, the good and the bad.

Me: I WILL trust you God.

GOD: And don't doubt that my plan for your day is always better than your plan.

Me: I won't God. And let me just tell you God, thank you for everything today.

GOD: you're welcome child. It was just another day being your GOD & I love looking after my children.

Plan For Goa Trip

Pre-requisites
1. Book a HOTEL or RESORT (We booked a RESORT, which was decent enough. It is called BAMBOO MOTELS . We were in a COTTAGE (which has 2 huge bed rooms and off-course they do have individual rooms) .. ;-) We paid around 1500 Rs/Day for cottage + 100 Rs for extra bed and individual rooms costs around 1000 Rs/Day

Goa Plan !!!
1. As soon as you enter GOA limits... Don't get excited ... Just Sit and Relax ;-)

2. After getting out of TRAIN ..in VASCO DA GAMA ..Catch a Taxi and go to PANJIM.

3. Go to M/Hotel or Room ... Fresh'n up ;-) .. Have cup off Tea ... ;-).

4. Book a bike (around 250 to 300 Rs rent per day + Petrol) or CAR (900 to 1000 Rs or more depending on the CAR you choose) to travel locally... That is the best means of transport (They will ask your License and Deposit which is refunded at the END). You can get the details from the Resort Manager or super visor or as soon as you get down in Panjim Main bus stop, you will find taxi's and you can check those guyz for rented bikes or Cars. Negotiate properly J

Day 1 –

a. Go to Miramar hotel for break fast ..which is opposite to Miramar Beach ..It opens at 12.00 PM ..nice place for Break fast (there are two hotels in the same place .. go to the one which opens at 12.00 PM and order for Channa Batturaa with Beer ..after break fast order Chocolate almond....Yummmiiiiiii ).

b. Go to Chapora fort (Remember DIL CHAHTA HAIN Movie’s Goa Trip J) .. awesome place .. If you have stamina .. Trek to that place from the Vagator beach... Get adequate fluids ..I know you will get tired .. ;-)

c. Thats it for Day 1 .. You will be itching to go back to your room .. ;-)

d. While coming from Dil chahta hain fort (chapora) ;-) .. on the way to your Resort (if you are booking BAMBOO MOTELS) ..on right side (Main road towards Margao)..you will find Baskin Robbins stop there again have Chocolate Almond ..... you will be charged up ;-) ..

e. Next to Baskin Robbins, you have Dominos..Order two large Cheese burst pizza and go to your MOTEL .. sit by the pool side ..and Enjoy the bite ;-) with a chilled Beer ;-)

Day 2 –

a. Repeat Day 1, Step a ;)

b. Get your Swimming costumes and Go To CANDOLIM Beach. Another good place where you can enjoy !!!

c. On the way to CANDOLIM Beach, you can see KINGFISHER VILLA .. Curse Vijay Mallya & his Son Siddharth Mallya to have such a wonderful Villa, Life and off-course HOT GALS ;-)

d. After cursing Mallya get inside to CANDOLIM Beach ..search for nice shacks and relax for few minutes and get ready to dive into Water .. Enjoy the wonderful waves .. ;-)

e. Before getting into water ..Order some food ... so that it will be ready when you get back to your shacks bcoz you will be damn hungry ;-)

f. There will be lot of Goa tourist guyz near the beach and offer you to take to middle of the beach and show Dolphins and say scuba diving (but it is just snorkeling) and bloddy they charge 1500 to 2000 Rs per head .. but its dead investment .. don’t ever take that

g. May be you can try Para-sailing which will be fun (I haven't tried.. I missed it L.

h. But don't miss BANANA RIDE ..That is real fun & awesome .... he will give you life jackets and drop you in the middle of the beach .. hey ..Don’t get scared its real fun J.

i. For Gals : So again normal tendency of Gals ..... shopping on road side .. ;-) ..Carry on with your shopping .. I can't give you suggestions on that ;) .

j. After shopping, surely you will be crazy to rush back to Motel ;-)

k. Have dinner on the way or at your Motel.

Day 3 –

a. Repeat Day 1, Step a)

b. Don't go to CALANGUTE BEACH... it will be jam packed .. (rather I don't want to go thr) .. if you want to check how it is !!! then get into that Beach.. but Not a gr8 place.

c. If not that go to BHAAGA BEACH and go to Aguda fort.. Its quite good place (all these beaches are 3 to 4 kms in radius).

d. Repeat Day 1 Step d & e ;-)

e. End of Day 3. Relax

Day 4 – Most important Day of GOA Trip, without which your Trip is incomplete ;-) !!!

a. Repeat Day 1, Step a) ..But be bit early as you need to travel atleast 75 to 80 Kms to reach to one of the most ROMANTIC and AWESOME place.

b. . i.e PALOLEM BEACH... Best beach of ALL .... Don't you dare to MISS THIS BEACH.. This is one of my FAVORITE BEACH..Very calm and less crowd ... Juz perfect way to End your trip ..

c. Plan to stay(I would insist you to stay) there for a day (travel in such a way that you will reach thr by 12.00 or max 1.00 PM.. and book( I guess you can book in advance) a BEACH RESORT (inside the beach) ( we booked at NEPTUNE POINT, which has small and beautiful huts ... and good food aswell, Address - Appendix a).. They charged around 500 to 600 rs per night and for one hut .. Its worth !!!

d. Hey ..don’t go to bed so early .. Juz enjoy the waves and relax with chilled beer..Take a Stroll .. you will definitely luv that place

e. Now (may be around 2.00 A.M) go to bed ... ;-)

f. Wake up at around 10.00 AM.. Get ready to travel back to PANJIM.

g. Repeat Day 2, Step i ;-)

h. Drive safely ;-) ..make sure you guyz reach before it gets darker .. (But we drove during the night .... after 12.00 AM ..to have fun but kids like you shouldn't try this )

Day 5 –

a. Wake up & pack up.. Again repeat Day 1, Step a)

b. Say bye to Resort Manager and tip him if he has taken good care as per your expectation J

c. If you have rented CAR or Bike, call that guy and clear it off.

d. Go to Panjim Bus stop

i. Repeat Day 2, Step i ;-)

ii. Opposite to Panjim bus stop, you will find a shop where you get good Varieties of Cashew nuts, buy some for me !! lol !!! ;-) and some for your family J.

iii. And Important thing you have to buy for us is you will find Government Liquor shops, get us Wine bottles ;-) .

e. Catch the bus or Train and have a nice journey J

Day 6

a. Update your parents and friends, (ofcourse including me ;-) ). About your experience in GOA.

LANGUAGE:
Women can easily learn many languages. Her brain sets up. But can not find the solutions to problems. Men can not easily learn languages; he can easily solve the problems.
3 year old gal has three times higher vocabulary than 3 year old boy.

ANALYTICAL SKILL :
Men’s brain has lot of space for handling the analytical process. So easily he can analyze and find the solution for a process.
He can design (blue print) a map of a building easily.
If a complex map is viewed by women, she can not understand it. She can not understand the details of the map easily.

CAR DRIVING:
While driving a car, men’s analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fastly. If he see an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and driving accordingly. Where as women take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. Her single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrating only on the driving.

You can often watch, while men driving the car fastly, the women sit next to him will shout, GO SLOW , CARE FULL, AAHHH, OHH GOD..

LIE:
Many times, when men lie to women face to face, they get caught easily.
Her super natural brain observes the facial expression 70%, and the body language 20% and the words coming from the mouth 10%. So he is easily caught while lieing.

End of day, if men have lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and puts the problems in individual rooms in the brain and then finds the solution one by one. You can see many guys looking at the sky for a long time. If you disturb him, he gets irritated.

Indians are famous for their weak memory. Be it terrorist strike or be it political misgivings or even corruption Indians in the past have shown that they tend to move on. In the past this attitude has been called resilient when taken in a positive manner and the "chalta hain" attitude when taken in the negative approach.

The number of people thronging to the ram lila maidan have dwindled. Are we again falling in the trap that in the first place resulted in us getting to the situation we are in. Callousness. Or are more fundamental necessities of life taking over. Average Indian has a family to support, work to do and can we expect them to throng the street every day? Can the government take it easy?

I would say that it would be stupid to assume that Indian have accepted their faith. Resentment is there and government did get a reality check on the weekend. If they do not heed to the warning signals they may hear them again and this time it won't be warning it would be a decision. The decision of the vote. Never forget that even Indira Gandhi was booted out.

Don't just enact a law. Reduce corruption. Improve Governance. The Indian is awake again.

The Dance of Democracy

Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible people have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the proposal, development and passage of legislation into law.

If the above definition of democracy is to believed then India's standing as a democratic power stands reinforced by the current "Anna" revolution. People in this country are allowed to come out, protest and demand the law they want to be governed by. Also the "Revolution" itself is not above criticism. It has been inspected on a microscopic level to identify the caste, the religion and the ideological identities. It may have none, and then it may have some; the point is in India nothing is holy grail irrespective of the political power you command or the popular perception you are riding.

Agreed there have been aberration even in this movement and the action taken by the government but then I or for that matter no one believed India is perfect. We don't have to indulge in an armed struggle to bring about change. We can live to tell the story irrespective if we end up on the winning or the loosing side. India is democratic and that is what I am proud of.

Why is it that people who have been friends for years suddenly find the going tough when they get into a relationship?

Why is that people who are wonderful in the art of making and keeping old friends find it hard to get their relationship going?

Relationship as a concept may be similar to friendship but it is not the same thing. There are a number of differences which if not properly understood lead to the ultimate disaster.

To draw a corollary friendship between people is like the grass that grows in the wild. It can come up in the most unexpected places. No effort is needed to make it blossom and no rules are attached to the growth of the grass. Some blades of grass and some can be green. No one cares. Grass is just that grass. Grass may wither but even before you know it would be back.

Similarly friendship can take place between the most unexpected of partners. Usually you just click and need no extra effort from your side to make it got. You can be yourself and are not expected by anyone to behave in a particular manner. How you look and how you present yourself is insignificant. Friends are just friends. Friends may have some problems as well but usually they would be back together.

Relationship is altogether a different ball game. It is more like a manicured garden. Each item in it is expected to grow in a particular fashion. You need to put in effort to make them prosper without which it may wither an d never recover. The beauty of the garden is in it totality. One individual item may not look so beautiful.

In a relationship the two of you are in it. How you behave, what you do and how you do are all significant. You are not their just to have a good time but instead you are their coz you need the other person. You are dependent on the other person and the other person is dependent on you. You need to put in effort to cultivate the relationship. If not cared for the relationship would fall apart and you wouldn't even realize what happened.

Life is strange. I have so much to speak but so few to talk to. I enjoy conversations but cant find a medium to express my inner self. Some would say that these contradictions are what makes life interesting; but few would understand that interesting stuff are good to look at horrendous to experience. Who knows 6 months from now I may laugh at what I am experiencing today but as of now it is tormenting.

I should be happy. I have everything that I dreamt of throughout my life, yet I am not. The problem with me in particular and humans in general is that we love to work towards a goal but once you achieve that you experience a large void. This void needs to be filled. As of now I am experiencing the same.

I am sure, the void would soon disappear but am terrified of what would take its place. Will it be another goal or would be a desire to enjoy what I have achieved. Now it is that the reader would understand the problem of the author. Enjoying what you have achieved is good but a retort would be round the corner that what have you achieved that you feel you can enjoy. Working towards the next goal is tough because it takes a lot of effort and sacrifice. I am on a fast track and have sacrificed almost everything that I can. One Month in UK

I came to UK on 25th November 2010. It has been just over one month since I have been here. I have encountered a different nation, a different culture in this last one month. Multiple times I have had a urge to blog, to comment on this culture; eulogize UK, criticize India and vice-versa.

I held myself back only because of one reason, to understand why things happen a particular way, you need to understand the background behind it as well. To add to it we Indians in general and I in particular had a pre-conceived notion that people and/or things in UK (should) behave in a particular manner. When I experienced stuff which was contrary to these notions I had extreme reactions. They varied from aghast to fascinated, from awestruck to dismayed and from ecstatic to petrified. I took my time to mellow these reactions down and form opinion which are based on comprehensive facts and analysis and not on knee jerk reactions.

UK is a beautiful country. Awesome scenery and mind-blowing infrastructure. Basic infrastructure like roads, water supply and electricity is state of art. Transport works like clock work. These things dawned on me the idea how things should be and leaps of bounds of progress that we need to make. Yet I would tell you one thing I did not come across any particular infrastructure that was new to me. India has its own islands where the infrastructure could compete with UK. Its just that these island are just too few. India needs to make this state of infrastructure far more prevalent.

The departmental stores are full with stuff from across the world. The progress of the food processing industry in the west is nerve racking. I am pretty sure of one thing that one area that India is ages behind the west is food processing. I had never imagined I could get frozen samosa and bhaji even in India let alone UK or for that matter kidney beans (Rajmah) or chick peas (Chole) already soaked in water. India has a non-existent food processing industry and if you are looking for the next big industry to invest your money then take my word this industry is it.

Speaking of retail shops, one thing that I noticed here is the almost nonchalant attitude towards bags. Indian malls treat every customer as a prospective thief. You cannot carry a bag inside the shops as if the first thing that I would do is put the first thing that I found into the bag. I always found this expectation atrocious and when I saw the freedom here I felt relieved that at least somewhere people have some commonsense left. I am confidant that this would eventually trickle down to India someday.

The sandwich principle insists that you should place the bad news in between two layers of appreciation. Now that the top layer is prepared, let me start with awful part. Food, if I have to give one word to it then that would be awful. The fact is that Indian taste buds and English food don't mix. Even the Indian food that you get here is an anglicized version of Indian food. To be fare none of this is unexpected or askew, yet it has been tough one month for me when it comes to food. On top of it when you get to the bills it makes a big hole in your pocket. Dining here is EXPENSIVE. Only saving grace is that both of these things make a good combination. Avoid Eating out and you are fine.

This brings me to second thing which I want to crib about. Although the fact that I felt this is a statement on the appalling state of affairs in India. Here manual labour is either not available or very expensive. In India I had never bothered to clean the house, cook the food, iron my clothes. Suddenly I have to do everything. This can be very overwhelming initially. Haircut for 8 pound looked expensive. Although that was till the point I saw the board on the next shop which said 25 GBP for a haircut.

Last thing that I want to crib about is one thing that every Brit loves talking about - weather. Its supposedly the worst winter in the past 50 years and I have the misfortune of enduring it while I could have been whiling my time in the pleasant streets of Pune. Tough luck.

All things said and done the people here are great and I have fun exchanging banter with them. If only Indians could pick up the British sense of humour our social interaction would enrich substantially. Work culture is just that work culture and not donkey culture, you work for a living and not live to work. In other words you are in office by 8 or 9 and out by 4 or 5. Staying longer is neither expected nor accepted. Day to day life is full of pleasantries and continuous display of manners.

Another Incident

I have three girls alongside me and I unfortunately for me and the Pan Wallah decide to offer them Paans.

G2: I don't want that red syrup.

The Panwallah prepares three meetha pans for them.

G1:You didn't put that red syrup

Panwallah out of reflex action puts the red syrup and giri in one swoop.
G1: No giri....

G2: The paan is huge. I want only a half.
G3: White White cheej kam hain

Panwallah and I are utterly confused by now.

I pay and move up wondering how can someone have so many choices when dealing something so simple as a "Paan"

Even if someone had scripted IPL3 they couldn't have done a better job. With only 2 days of cricket and 3 matches left in league stages only one semifinalist has been decided. 5 teams are still vying for the final 3 spots. A number of permutation and combination are possible with various outcome possible. In this post i will try to reduce the confusion a little so that instead of scratching your head people can sit back and enjoy the cricket.

There can be 8 possible scenarios. For the people who lack patience the table given below shows them in a snapshot. As given in legend in each scenario if the cell in the team's row is colored green then the team will make it to the semis, if the cell is yellow then the team going through will depend upon the net run rate and if the cell is red then that team would be out.

Dear John written by Nicholas Spark is one of the last books I have read. It is a story of a young man who joins the US Army apparently because he was dumped by a girl. The real reason was because he wanted to grow up. Then on one of his vacation he meets a girl who he immediately falls in love with. This book meanders through with they meeting, separating and meeting again. The problems of a long distance relationship is depicted in a fantastic manner and people who are in long distance relationship should definitely read this.

The narrative of the relationships be it either the relationship between the two protagonists or between John and his father is quite excellent. You cannot help but visualize the relationship. This is this quality of Nicholas Spark which separates him from the rest. He is simply the best when it comes to emotional and romantic stuff.

The problem with Dear John is that it simply has no characters or events that are etched into your memory. Neither does it have any "meat" in it. There is simply nothing in the book on which you can ponder. It is here where I will not recommend the book for people who like serious stuff but if you are one who want a simple romantic emotional read then go for it. My rating three stars.

Life @ Pimple Saudagar

When I got posted to Pune I was pretty happy. I was finally leaving that sleepy place (Mysore) and would be moving to the hot happening (Pune). Little did I know that all that glitters is not gold.

My story or should I say my ordeal starts at Hinjewadi - the place which most of the IT companies have made home. This place is about 20 KM from the city center. Bowing to the requirement of having to commute daily to office I ended up choosing a place called "Pimple Saudagar" to be my base. It is right in between the city and the office. The thought process was that reaching office would be easy and so would be reaching the city. So far so good. Isn't it?

No it is not. The problem is that somehow people in this area and especially the auto guys have this impression that software professional earn a lot (Somebody please tell them that we are the lowest paid educated coolies you can find anywhere in the world). So if you need to travel to city beware. Autowallahs tend to ask absurd fares. Adding to it if you are unfortunate enough to be returning to pimple saudagar late night (anything after 9 qualifies as late night) then god help you. No the place is not unsafe. At least I thought so till the recent incident. The problem is autowallah end up asking you anything from 300 bucks to 500 bucks for a 10km distance. It results in the fact that we cannot afford to stay out late missing most of the action and the happening Pune.

One possible solution is to get a bike. Maharashtra is a unique case in that respect. You cannot ride a bike which has a non Maharashtra number. I understand that it is an all India law but the problem with me is that I have lived most of my life in Delhi, UP, Rajasthan and West Bengal and in all these four states I never had a problem driving a vehicle registered in any other state. I often wonder that if a RTO can issue a driving licence which is valid throughout the nation then why is it that we cannot ride our bikes throughout the country with bike registered at the same RTO. I belong to RTO and transfers for me is not only a possibility but also a likelihood. Am I suppose to pay separate road tax to each government where my company has offices? To get this work done the agent is asking for 12000/- bucks. It is 20% the cost of the bike. Outlandish! Isn't it. So the solution we have chosen is to not do anything and rely on the corrupt policeman. This further means that we avoid going to any happening place leaving me caught in this place called Pimple Saudagar.

The name itself is the first thing that struck me. I mean why would a place be called pimple saudagar. Did any saudagar get pimples here? I stopped wondering about the name when I learned the name of near by localities which are

Pimple Nilakh
Pimple Nisarg
Pimple Gurav etc.

Then the attitude of people here where every shopkeeper I meet tries to fleece out as much as possible out of me. Some examples are ghada (earthen pot) at 100/-. Potato, Onion, Tomato are all sold at 40/- rupees per kg. Even the road side vendor sells a lousy paratha at 30/-.

On top of it everywhere you go you see construction going on. This results in dust, dust and more dust everywhere.If you are allergic to it beware of this place.

One question which does come to mind if things are so bad then why am I still living here. It is simply because I have no other option. As Shakespeare said What you cannot cure you must endure.

Why is it that women don't understand that men don't understand colours?

During my last semester I had an argument with one of my junior about the number of colours that exist. I told her bluntly that for men there are only a few colours namely

White (No technicalities please about it being summation of all the colours)
Black (None about it being absence of colour)
Red
Blue
Green
Pink

Brown

She was aghast and showed me a bottle asking me "what colour it was'? "Blue", I answered. "No" came the reply. "Its Turquoise. She had left me speechless. I didn't know what Turquoise was. If I can add most men don't. Men are just not programmed to handle the colours at the same level of discreetness as ladies are.

Why i write of it because due to some unfathomable reasoning the fairer sex expects us to understand the colours as well as they do. If I talk about Project Hackintosh, Quickpath, Nehalem or even something as common as iPhone I am labelled as a geek, a showoff or even a bore but if they talk about beige, azure or Burgundy I am supposed to understand. They will just ignore the fact that I cannot decipher what colour they are supposed to be talking about.

Today I went shopping with one of my friend (aha shopping: will lament about the utility of it someday later ). Coming back to the point she showed me a top. I told her she already had a green top and probably needed something different. "Its not green its turkish green" promptly came the reply. It didn't stop there. The usual banter about me being so lame followed. Me lame!! I call people who can't tell the difference between a 3NF and BCNF lame. Yet I kept quite(Over the years I have learned that letting the fairer sex have fun at your expense is often the best way to get close to them). And away she went laughing away.

Rest of the evening was fantastic. It usually is if she is in good humour but I kept wondering why is it that women don't understand that men don't understand colours?

5 Things I Have Learned After 9 Months In Infosys

On this 13th I would complete 9 month in Infosys. It has been a journey where I have learned a lot, sometimes intentionally sometime unintentionally. Here in this post I try to enlist it in a 5 point list for dummies.

5 Points a.k.a A Grades are meaningless.

When you start training in Mysore it is a race to 5 points. Everybody slogs their asses just to get the all elusive full 5 point. Nobody knows why but still everybody wants a good CGPA. The reasons given by trainees who get involved in this rat-race vary.
- Sometimes it is about that extra thousand bucks that you get as extra TPI,
- Sometimes it is about learning what you did not learn in college and
- Sometimes it is just because it will help in your career.
Believe me that all the reasons that are specified here are either totally crap or are simply just not worth it to walk that extra mile. Why should I know? It is because I am a 5 pointer, a person who not only did run that rat race but apparently won it as well. When I see the benefits that I have got I can state that it is just not worth it.

Yes I do get that extra thousand bucks, but it cannot and will not pay for the extra effort I ended up putting to stay top of the hill.

Yes you learn a lot especially stuff you never learned in college but would you use it in your life is another question in itself. To learn more about this refer point 2.

Help in career. Yeah Right! It might have helped had you worked on the same technology and even if you have worked on the same technology you may feel that you know nothing about it. For instance I was trained in mainframe and got a mainframe project but lo and behold it is HP mainframe (Tandem) instead of IBM Mainframe I was trained on and suddenly I feel as if I know nothing.
Technology That You Have Been Trained At Is Irrelevant.

The time when people get their stream allocated is a time of much heartburn for a large majority of people as they did not get the technology they wanted. My two cents on that is that is that technology you get is irrelevant to the your career in Infosys in particular and the industry in general. As soon as you hit production you would start hearing terms like adaptability. Adaptability can be deciphered to mean that HR had no clue about the demands production might have 2 months down the line and now you are expected to cover their mistake by unlearning your old technology and learning new technology. So buddy another reason to chill in training.
Technology Firms Are Not Only About Code.

Technology firm do code but majority of the work is related to documentation, presentation and pacifying some stupid demands of management. In the end if you feel like jobs related to coding are secondary then you are not at all mistaken. So people bring your expectations down and get your MS Office skills up
Technology Firm Don't Work In Cutting Edge Technology

When I was in college I was naive enough to lambaste my college in particular and education system in India in general for teaching us an "outdated" technology. If you check out the technology used in Indian Technology Firms technology taught in my college seems like it came from some star war flick. Some of us may say why the hell do these company uses this technology. It is not like they cannot use modern tech, it is more like they work in legacy technology because business they get is in these technology. So the bottom line is if you don't know ruby on rails don't fret. Chill.
Its Not "All Work And No Play Environment"

After complaining about my employer for so long let me give credit where it is due. It is not an "all work and no play environment". People here do know how to enjoy life. They party hard when they get time and company provides them avenues to do that. You are allowed to speak your mind. Work Condition although not great are certainly bearable. But if the deliverable is due the next day then it is advisable that you get your quilt with you as you might be spending the night in office.

Back to Delhi

This week I came back to Delhi after a long 7 month. Boy did I miss Delhi!! In this period I remained 6 month in Mysore and 1 month in Pune but there is no place like Delhi. Its roads, its markets, its food and its amenities are something that is just too hard to replicate anywhere else. I missed the Delhi metro, CP, butter chicken, and its bus service. Last item in my list might raise a few eyebrows. Given that rickety buses are by no means world class but still Delhi has a functioning bus service that can get you to anyplace in Delhi within acceptable time.

Food in Delhi is something that I missed the most. Delhi is unique in the fact that all you need to do is take a stroll and you can 9 out of 10 times find a place where you can find palatable and often tasty food. Mysore and more so Pune also have there own version of food kiosk but somehow I don't find them palatable. The fault might lie in my taste buds which over the years have been conditioned to the Delhish food.

The Mobile Charger Mess

My family believes in promoting competition ergo the four mobile phones that we have all belong to different companies. This means that each one of us can have a phone which suits our personality. It also means that we have four different chargers in our house. This creates a real mess. This problem becomes even more compound when we travel as we have to carry four chargers and make sure that none of them are ever left behind. I have often wondered that why is this necessary. Mobile phones are basically all similar devices and have similar power requirement. Why is is that they cannot have same chargers.

Evidently I am not alone who thinks this way. European commission today announced that that 10 mobile phone producers, which represent some 90 percent of the mobile phone market in the European Union, have signed a voluntary agreement to use standardized chargers for mobile phones using a micro-USB connector.

What it means is that from now on all data based phones would have one standard charger. This way the clutter would be greatly reduced.

Although at the moment only applicable to EU we can safely assume that shortly other geographies will also get adopt this standard. Another benefit of this standard would be that phones would be sold without a charger and you can continue to use your old charger with the new phone thereby reducing wastage and indeed the cost you have to pay for the phone.

How to reduce stress on Indian Students

It seems Mr. Sibal, India's HRD minister, had an eureka moment while pondering over the stress the children. The solution that he comes out is to make the Xth Exam optional.

It would be an understatement if I say that I was stressed during my Xth year. I was stressed during XIIth as well but strangely enough I was never stressed to the same degree during the eight semesters I gave during my engineering. What is stranger is that Xth and XIIth syllabi is way easier than engineering syllabi. The preparation time is much more atleast 1 year in case of Xth and XIIth and only 15 days (all my engineer buddies would know what I mean) in case of engineering.

Why was it that I was stressed out much more during an examination which if I look in hindsight was way easier? Stress is associated not with a particular examination but with the consequences that examination can have on you. Parents, Teachers and indeed students themselves have managed to make board exams a big "hauaah". Attitudes change and anybody and everybody a kid meets never forgets them to remember them to work hard this year as this year "would count".

India's society is such that we want everyone to be either a doctor or an engineer. To make matter worse our infrastructure (Mr. Sibal pls note) is in shambles and it can hardly take care of the demand that it has to face. Consequently the demand pushes up the cutoff and thus the madrush for marks increases even more. Making a cosmetic change to a system is not bad and probably needed but what is really needed at this point of time is that we try to improve our education infrastructure to increase the number of people it supports and to improve the quality of graduates this system passes out.

Look at cat in 2002 you would have got a call at 97.XX percentile but in 2009 even 98.XX percentile would not fetch an IIM call. It is because the no of applicants have doubled in these years while IIMs have not been able to keep pace in the number of seats with this increase no of applicants.
