Now, this is turn of fuel to go green, this is the major green initiative taken by govt. the introduction of the Euro IV or Bharat Stage IV - the country's most environment friendly fuel yet.India will switch over to Euro-III petrol and diesel on October 1, with the petroleum ministry issuing a fresh deadline for oil companies to sell cleaner fuels. Consumers across the country will pay about Rs 0.20-0 .40 a litre more for Euro-III fuel.

Now mandatory in 13 metros across the country - Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Surat, Ahmedabad, Pune and Solapur - the Euro IV is India's latest step towards greener vehicles. At the moment there are just 13 cities on the Euro IV map, but the rest of India too will have to switch to Euro IV by October this year. The environment pollution (prevention and control) authority (EPCA) has asked oil companies to strictly follow a month-wise implementation schedule and we are all set to achieve it,” said the chairman and managing director of a stateowned oil company. The authority turned down auto the companies’ suggestion to introduce Bharat Stage-III (Euro-III ) fuel in the entire country simultaneously in October 2010, he said, requesting anonymity. Goa is selling Euro-III fuel from April 1, 2010. Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharastra will adopt the standard from June 1.
The ministry of shipping, road transport & highways has been asked to adhere to the schedule due to growing air pollution and its implications on health, the official said. Higher grade fuels will reduce emission of sulphur and benzene that pollute the environment.

Tata Power, India's largest private sector power company, is considering several low-cost solutions to the severe power shortage experienced across the country. Now the Tata group is planning to repeat the success in the power sector.
The company is set to test a2 kwh (kilowatt per hour) micro wind turbine that is one of the smallest in the world. A 60 watt light bulb for one hour consumes 0.06 kilowatt hours (kwh) of electricity and the wind turbine will have the capacity to power a small home for the entire day. To top it, the turbine can be mounted on rooftops.

Like the 'micro' wind turbine project, the company will also experiment with a 35 kw wind turbine mounted on a blimp that will float 333 metres above the ground. The concept of a high altitude wind turbine is to catch the winds that are more intense and sustained at that height.
Tata Power, which holds 49 per cent stake in the joint venture Tata BP Solar, which is India's largest solar company in India, is setting up a concentrated photo voltaic (C-PV) 13.5kw pilot unit on the Walwhan lake in Maharashtra. In this technology, sun rays are concentrated on PV cells and are cooled to generate power. If successful, this technology can be scaled up across all lakes that provide hydro power to Tata plants in west Maharashtra, generating about 1,000 mega watt (Mw), said company sources.
India has about 50,000 telecom towers which are run on diesel gensets that provide power to their antennaes. So far, Tata BP Solar has successfully implemented solar powered telecom towers in about 25 installations, replacing diesel powered gensets. The company has also electrified about 500 remote rural bank branches across several banks, including Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and at many rural co-operative banks.
Since ,seeing the growing demand for electricity to provide it in rural as well as urban aera is tough jobs since coal reverses are in shortage not to supply huge demand India is heavily dependent on imports which are mostly entangled with strategic tug-of-wars be it the case of losing oil & gas blocks to China or ditching plans for energy partnership with Iran under pressure from the US. Nuclear energy expansion, too, has many roadblocks – concerns about safety, waste disposal & civil liability and fuel shortages.
This great initiate by TATA's will be helping India to reach goal to reduce its carbon intensity by 20 to 25 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels and it will have to agree to mandatory and absolute emission reduction.

Delhi, the capital city of India is getting beautified like a bride for the upcoming mega-sporting event, Commonwealth Games 2010 in October. The 12 day event from 3rd to 14th October 2010 will involve 71 participants (Commonwealth Games Associations) and will host 17 sports across 23 sporting venues in and around the city. This is the XIXth Commonwealth Games, where the best of athletes (about 8000) will come from 71 Commonwealth Nations to showcase their mettle

What I feel proud about the most is the initiative of the Organizing Committee of Commonwealth Games, Delhi to strive towards the staging of the first ever "Green Commonwealth Games". Beijing Olympics, 2008 and the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa have undertaken green principles and green technologies as a joint venture with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). But this will be the first time when Commonwealth Games will go green.
. The environment will play a pivotal role in Commonwealth Games 2010 as the CWG organizers in Delhi, jointly working with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), have proposed to implement a series of green measures to make this one of the greatest green sporting events.
In October 2007, the organizers of the Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi had tied up with the UNEP and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in order to integrate major environmental considerations into the planning and staging of the first ever "Green Commonwealth Games".
The green measures which were proposed under MoU are called Ecological Codes and they would cover the areas of:

Conservation of biodiversity
Extensive afforestation
Energy efficiency
Effective waste management
Reduced air and noise pollution
Sustainable transportation
Conservation of water
Waste water treatment
Use of renewable energy

Green Initiatives for a carbon-neutral sporting event
Some of the green initiatives taken by the Organizing Committee of CWG 2010, Delhi are:

> On 5th June 2009, the World Environment Day, 71 Jasmine saplings were planted in the
"Commonwealth Garden of 71" (created at Hotel Ashok, the Games family Hotel) signifying the 71
    participating Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA).
> A green games portal or microsite, highlighting the vision, activities and environmental awareness
programmes was launched on the same day within the Commonwealth Games 2010 website.
> A tree plantation drive was undertaken in October 2009 in order to lower carbon footprints and
compensate the adverse effect of ongoing construction work. The first "city forest" was developed by
planting 3000 saplings in Arya Nagar, Delhi by student volunteers of eco-clubs, schools and colleges,
officials of Delhi government, Department of Environment and Organizing Committee. Following this,
many more of such "city forests" were developed to enhance the green cover of the city.
> One of the coal based power plants was closed down for cleaner air.
> On 5th June 2010, the Organizing Committee CWG, coupled with the Department of Environment had
organized a sustainable transport rally of bicycles, electric cars and electric bikes. More than 200
   people participated in the rally.
> By the end of July 2010, air quality monitoring system will start providing real time pollution data at 11
key locations in the city and will continue till the Commonwealth Games in October
> Increased number of metro routes have been built to connect various parts of the city and the national
capital region (immediate outskirts) to public transportation system.
> Delhi had already introduced a fleet of green buses running in clean fuel (Compressed Natural Gas)
and the number of those buses are increased to ensure sustainable transportation.
> All the 2000 vehicles for transporting officials and athletes will run on Compressed Natural Gas
Recycled paper stationery will be used during the Games.
Thyagaraj Stadium, India's first eco-friendly stadium has been reconstructed and was inaugurated in April 2010 which will be the venue for the Netball competition in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Covering an area of 16,000 square metres, it is built on the principles of "green building technologies".

> The bricks used for the construction are made of environmentally friendly fly-ash.
> Water conservation is ensured by installment of affluent treatment plant to recycle water within the
stadium and rain water harvesting system.
> Piped natural gas (PNG) (clean fuel) run turbines (imported from USA and assembled in Switzerland)
will be used for 3.5 MegaWatt power generation of the entire stadium
> The exhaust heat of the turbine will be used to run the central AC of the entire stadium with the help of
   Vapour Absorption Machine (VAM).
> Solar energy is being used for power inside the building and also will be stored and harnessed for other
> Specialised brick walls are made which have cavities acting as acoustic and thermal barriers.

All these above green measures put together will be successful in the endeavour of leaving minimal carbon footprint.
The state has secured an order worth Rs 31 crore for the purpose. The estimated 1.53 lakh flower pots across the five stadium and beautiful décor at all important venues will have predominantly Himachali flowers.
It may be noted that Himachal has been already awarded orders above Rs 30 crore for supply of flowers by CPWD Delhi, while private procurement is estimated to be around Rs 42 crore. It is estimated that in the Games season alone, Himachal will be supplying nearly 23 crore flower spikes to Delhi.
Himachal currently grows marigolds, carnations, tulips, lilies, gladioli, chrysanthemums and roses. Last year, over 680 hectares of land was under flower cultivation with at least 3,000 farmers making a business of Rs 45 crore. Carnations and roses will be in big demand during the Games.Till now, districts like Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra and Chamba have taken a lead in the cultivation of best varieties of flowers. With farmers switching over to polyhouses, Bilaspur is now way ahead in the race.
“This is a big opportunity for us, which we will have to encash. The Horticulture department is compiling a district-wise list of growers who can get direct orders for supplying flowers during the Games,” said state’s Horticulture Minister Narinder Bragta. In Chamba, the Churah Valley Farmers Cooperative, which has already made its name in the cultivation and marketing of flowers from the state’s most backward block, is likely to get a big share of the orders.
Tirupati Temple turns Green

The Going Green concept is reaching every where, its only a matter of really caring about the climate, and the environment.
The latest news around the country is that India's richest temple -Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), at Tirumala is turning to to green in it's opertions from gardening to cooking, only non-conventional sources of energy are now being used in the temples of Tirupati.
As per this report, is relying entirely on clean energy to feed over 70,000 people everyday. The temple has installed solar powered lights, solar cooking system, windmills and a water recycling station.

Tirupati Goes Green; use Solar, Wind energy

”The basic principle is conversion of water into steam energy. We’re converting the solar energy into steam energy. The water flows through the pipes and the solar dishes concentrate the solar energy to the concentrators. In the concentrators the water is converted into steam and that steam is utilised for cooking,” says Deputy Executive Engineer (Mechanical) KV Raman Rao.
..
It cost just Rs 1 crore 8 years ago to set up the system of 106 solar dishes that use solar energy to convert water into steam, which is then used for all the cooking. It saves Tirupati 1.2 lakh litres of diesel every year.
Nearly 50,000 kilos of rice along with sambhar and rasam are cooked in the kitchens of Tirumala every day of the year without using conventional gas.
Instead it’s the steam produced by the non-conventional solar cooking system that reaches the kitchen through the pipes that’s used for cooking. The chefs say that it takes less than 20 minutes to cook an entire meal. No wonder that this system is the chefs’ favourite
“Since we started using this system, our work is easier and quicker. It’s much better than gas which took much longer. We’ve been using this for more than 8-9 years and we are really comfortable with it,” says Tirumala chef Goravaiyya Rao.
It is not just the sun alone as Tirumala uses wind and water effectively too. The windmills one the hill ensure that the temple town is able to meet a some part of the power requirement by itself.
..
“From the wind energy, I’m getting around 140 lakh units. TTD’s requirements per year are 350 lakh units. That means that 40-45 per cent of the energy required by TTD is coming from its non-conventional sources,” points out Divisional Engineer (Electrical) M Ravishankar Reddy.

Hope soon all major large temple must be learn lesson from this green move.
A Endangered Fauna

The Ganges River Dolphin is found mainly in the Ganges and Brahmaputra River systems in India and Bangladesh. There existance is concentrated on the 1,044km stretch of dolphin-inhabited Brahmaputra River system & Ganges River System.
The Ganges Dolphin is found in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. They prefer deep waters and generally share their habitat with crocodiles, fresh water turtles and wetland birds. In Ganges region, these aquatic mammals are known by the name of ‘Susuk’ whereas in the Brahmaputra region they are called ‘Hihu’.There are roughly about 2,000 river dolphins left in India today (of which 240-300 are found in the Brahmaputra river). In the 1980s, there were about 3,500 dolphins.

In the nineteenth century, the dolphins were plentiful,in the entire distributional range however, the range and abundance of this species has sharply declined in the last 100 years and the IUCN correspondingly revised its threatened status . It is estimated that currently there are less than 2000 individuals of this subspecies globally.

According to the older human generation in India, three decades ago, the Gangetic dolphin was one of the most commonly sighted aquatic mega-fauna in the River's system. However, due to increasing anthropogenic pressures, the overall population of the species has been declining and they have been extirpated from most of the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra and Ganges and are now restricted to pockets in the Brahmaputra mainstream. This current project was initiated with the aim of identifying hotspots for long term conservation of the last remaining dolphins in river's system.

Threat To Dolphin:
> Mining (in Kulsi river of Assam) and Other development such as the construction of more than 50 dams
(Farakka barrage) in Ganges and other irrigation-related projects.
> A destructive fishing gears for the dolphin habitats such as gill nets and hook fishing.
> Oil extraction (Dolphin oil is used to prepare medicine for rheumatic pain and also to prepare of bait for
    the catfishes).
> Water pollution (caused by sewage, industrial effluents, chemicals and immersion of religious idols).

Conservation of Ganga Dolphin:
Various conservational initiative and public awareness is being made through NGO's,media, local villagers, fishermen communities and defence organisations. The status of the Ganges River dolphin in the River basin, threats and conservation measures were discussed. The Wildlife Protection Act of India mandates dolphin conservation as a priority, little has been done at the government level to implement or enforce the law.Even WWF had listed these Gangantic Dolphin as endangered fauna.WWF aims to reduce or eliminate the threats caused by fisheries bycatch and habitat degradation by 2012.

Exactly five years back the two had entered into an agreement for setting up of a steel plant, captive port, mining and all related infrastructure facilities, and that had stirred up a huge controversy.

The state government had assured the company that it will keep the area free of all encumbrances, make sure the raw materials are provided, help procure necessary clearances including single window approvals at the state level. With an anticipated investment of Rs.51,000 crores (USD 12 billion), the Pohang Steel Company (POSCO) was ready to roll its blueprint into reality.
Over 30,000 farmers are expected to lose their lands and livelihood if the US$12 billion project, billed as India’s largest Foreign Direct Investment, is implemented. POSCO signed an MoU with the Orissa government in mid-2005, for the setting up of an integrated steel and power plant, a private port and mining of over 600 million tonnes of Orissa’s high grade iron ore.
Ironically, even as the local communities continued their resistance; the process of seeking various approvals continued at the central government level. To set up the steel plant and port, 1253 hectares of forest land would need to be diverted for non-forest use. This is a mandatory procedure to be followed as per the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. The grant of clearance would also mean felling of about 2.8. lakh trees. The proposal was considered by the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) under the MoEF on 9th August 2007. Despite the large numbers involved, this committee recommended the grant of forest clearance for the projects.
Over the years, the forests too have disappeared—first the mangroves and then the casuarina plantations, destroyed by a super cyclone. Now, villagers grow betel vines and cashew on the high lands and have converted the low laying areas to paddy fields. “The paddy field gives us rice for the whole year and the betel vines the cash to buy other items,” says Ramesh Mohanty. “We will not allow the Posco project to come up on this site,” says POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samithi (PPSS) chief Abhaya Sahoo.
For the local opposition to the POSCO project, all these are legalese that will iron themselves out along the way. What matters crucially is that the people resisting remain united in thought and action. Despite differences and tension on the ground, the fact remains that POSCO has not been able to start work on its project for five years. The kudos, almost entirely, go to the struggle on the ground; outside support and delay has strengthened their hands, certainly, but it is the locals themselves who have persevered the most in the face of intense efforts to displace them.

The conservation of nature has reached to new level,as the new methods are applied to the every possible field where science can step to,such new researches are also helping the barren lands of Himalayan state to turn into fertile region.
Tucked away from the the public gaze the Defence Research and Development Organisation's with the help of local units and women's self help group are working for the project.

Under this project, the bright red berries of the seabuckthorn plant, which are popularly known as Leh Berries. This berry that grows wild in the high valleys of the Ladakh region. Seabuckthorn, also called the “Wonder plant” and “Ladakh gold” has multi-purpose medicinal and nutritional properties, and also helps in soil conservation and nitrogen fixation.

The aim is to bring a million hectares under cultivation by 2020, with an initial funding of Rs.25 crore in 2011 for preparatory work and a pilot programme in five districts, according to the Leh Declaration. It was adopted at the conclusion of a workshop for stakeholders, organised by the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research.
China has a Rs 17,000-crore seabuckthorn market. Russia, Finland and Canada are the other major markets.
India currently has only 11,500 hectares under seabuckthorn cultivation, an area that is far outstripped by other countries where the plant is indigenous.
Locals have been aware of the medicinal properties of seabuckthorn and using its berries, leaves and roots for food, fodder and firewood. Even history is been touched by it- Genghis Khan used it to improve the memory, stamina, strength, fitness and disease-fighting abilities of his army. Soviet Cosmonauts on board the Mir space station used seabuckthorn cream to counter radiation. It is also known as the king of vitamin C.
It is major advance in conserve environ as it Hardy, drought-resistant and tolerant to extreme temperatures from – 43º C to + 40º C, the plant has an extensive root system which can fix atmospheric nitrogen, making it ideal for controlling soil erosion and preventing desertification.

In today's new era, people are running before fashion which is nothing but an induced epidemic. The fashion guru's are now turning there head toward the Green clothing which is now turning hot topic around the world.
So,the new initiate's in this way is "bamboo fabric" which are largely used for making green clothes.Since, bamboo fabric is durable and breathable. It's incredible softness and natural lustre are exceptional, similar to fine cashmere.
There are four other key qualities:

Bamboo is environmentally kind and sustainable :

Bamboo grows wild without the aid of fertilizers, pesticides or any chemical assistance whatsoever. Unlike cotton, which is the world's most environmentally disasterous crop, accounting for a quarter of ALL chemical fertilizers and pesticides from only 10% of the agricultural land mass.

Bamboo is the world's fastest growing plant, sometimes rising several feet in 24 hours. Bamboo grows to maturity in around 3 years and after harvesting, more is planted, then left for 3-4 years before harvesting again. Only 10% of the vast bamboo forests are given over to commercial use, indeed only some strains of bamboo are suitable for making clothing. Bamboo production is completely sustainable.

In addition, greater interest in bamboo will lead to more bamboo forests, which offers greater greenhouse gas conversion to oxygen. With most of each growing cycle spent at full height, it's a forest that re-grows almost immediately after each harvest.

Whilst this is just one of four outstanding selling points of bamboo clothing, given also the smooth, luxurious feel of the fabric, this element is a compelling reason on it's own for the commercial development of bamboo clothing.

Bamboo fabric is antibacterial, antifungal and antistatic :

This quality keeps bamboo fresher for longer, more hygienic and more healthy. A principle reason for bamboo's success in the wild is that it has natural antibacterial properties, which kill and prevent the spread of bacteria. This property is maintained in fabric form. A specialist Japanese performance laboratory washed bamboo fabric 100 times and yet there was no drop-off in antibacterial performance whatsoever.

Bamboo absorbs water 3-4 times better than cotton :

Bamboo fabric is a natural moisture wicking agent. Moisture is taken from the body, on contact, and then instantly evaporates. Bamboo's ability to absorb water accounts for its capacity for rapid growth, which is also retained in fabric form. A bamboo T-shirt, for example, keeps the skin comfortable, rather than sticky, in summer weather.

Bamboo stays 2-3 degrees cooler in hot weather & warmer in cold :

Like another natural fabric, Merino wool, Bamboo is naturally cooler in summer and warmer in winter. However, unlike any other fabric in the world, it's physically cooler to touch in hot weather. In hot weather, it will keep the user cooler than regular fabrics in the equivalent knit or weave.
It is amazing that after so much hype that Go Green initiatives in their various forms and avatars have got,

the results of entire exercise has been near nil.

Though we know about the impact our action can create, we actually continue doing the same actions with same non chalant attitude !

It is simply a matter of "choice"! we have the power to control most of our choices and, therefore, the impact we create, from where we live to what we buy, eat, and use the light our homes to how we use ours natural resources.

It the time we put ours thinking caps to brainstorm for the ways to contribute toward saving our mother earth.Take for instance our easy going attitude toward paper. Paper plays important role in ours lives. The newspaper , cereal box, shopping bags, the tissue paper, toilet paper, books, magazines, labels; it almost omnipresent.

When paper is such intense part of ours lives and we know trees need to be cut down to make it, why not be more judicious while using it.

It takes about 24 trees to make a tons of paper and the paper industry ranks 4th in contributing the greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute about 9% of manufacturing sector's carbon emissions.

Paper usage is rising by around 20% every year, with the average office worker using approximately 50 sheets of paper every day in typical offices.

Yes, use of paper is unavoidable but we are sure make a difference towards environment based on how responsible we use it.Paper accounts for more than half of all municipal solid waste.Saving paper will decrease waste going for dump in the outskirts which in turn will reduces pollution, energy usage in production, transportation and recycling new paper product and also majority reduce the cutting of trees to make new paper.

Some following ways can bring much change and can save our mother earth:-

* Watch out for the excessive use of paper. Most of companies strives to make a paperless environment ,

but hardly succeed because the employees do not cooperate. We should avoid making hard copies

unless absolutely necessary, use both the sides of paper when printing, cut unused half paper for

someone else, reduce the font size while printing etc. But the ground rules should be -do not print unless

   very important.

* Buy carefully. While buying paper or diaries, stick to recycled paper.Opt. for unbleached paper and

uncolored paper and buy the paper in bulk to reduces the packing.

* Proofread documents on the screen before printing. You don't want to reprint pages because of the error

   that could have been avoided.

* Print the addresses directly on the envelopes and avoid using labels.

* Fill copier tray rightly to avoid the paper jams.

* Change the paper cups in the pantry with ceramics stuff that can be washed and put back on the self.

* Use the fastest and paperless way to mail documents.

* Send waste paper to the the recycle and recycled paper products.

At homes :-

* If we can, why not stop buying newspaper and start reading the e-paper instead.

* Getting ours names off mailing lists that sends the promotions we don't care about.

* Get washable clothes towels for the kitchen and cut down on paper towel usage.

* Teach the children not to tear the paper from the note book to makes toys.

Our commitment toward saving paper can help to minimize environmental liabilities, minimizes the efficient use of resources, reduce the waste pollution and increases profit and efficients operations of organization.

Everyone’s a winner with green building, and going green now will position you for what’s ahead—a green building boom.

Lighting trends focus on development of more energy efficient concepts. One such energy efficient concept is the Green Building concept. One of the contributing factors for energy consumption is the lighting load.
The new concept launch in this move is the edge cutting technology LED(Light Emitting Diodes). A large number of product have been launch over this technology.
The most hilighted product is LED light is user friendly and elegant with attractive features such as saturated colors, digital control and energy efficiency. The advantage of LEDs include longer lifetime, Compact size and flexibility in design, Digital Control programmability, light output with no Ultra Violet and Infra Red radiation and Safety of usage because of low voltage and low heat operation. These will expand applications of lighting in homes in ways one could only dream of a few years back.
The major advantage is it do not include mercury contents in it which is save for nature. In india the large number of LED light are being used for decorative purpose. For instance Howrah Bridge uses this light for its gloryfication, and heritage monuments like Kesgarh Sahib,Punjab using this LED technology.

A hazardous waste in today’s world are little known to world and its drawbacks. This waste can be defined as the waste that poses substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment.
Presence of various chemicals in these waste makes them toxic, poisonous, corrosive, flammable, explosive and infectious in nature and also these waste are not subject to natural biodegradation process.
The levels of toxic wastes continue to grow. Industries and world are continue to be largely unaware of this major environmental problem. As a result, many people and industries are not bother and failing to prevent the creation of hazardous waste or to limit the negative effects it produces.
I we do not stand today for the cause it may prove very difficult to reduce hazardous waste in the future. Unlike many other environmental problems, waste creation is something people do not often think about.
Now, we have to prevent to plastics disposal to waste, toxic water based waste to water bodies, proper dumpsites for heavy chemical and producing alternate to prevent this.
