Festivus Ride Camp Mack

Second day in a row on my bikes....this time it was out at Camp Mack for the Festivus Mtn Bike ride. 9 of us showed up ready to ride....I bailed a little early; still need to find the legs and fitness. Overall a very nice ride at Camp Mack, I would ride there any time. It's a great time of the year....riding with a great group of friends...Merry Christmas!!

Annual Festivus Eve Ride...

When: Saturday Morning @9am

Where: Camp Mack, meet at Pumping Station Rd and Rt322 parking lot.

What: 2-2:30 hour ride at the Camp Mack. Casual ride, regroup when necessary, nobody gets left behind (Its f-ing Christmas)

You’ll need a permit to ride Camp Mack, which can be purchased at Green Mtn bike shop in Ephrata.

FYI........I am going so those of you who ride real slow or are fat guys....Ill be there with you.....great fun...Ive been there a few times

I had forgot

I had forgotten what it was like to ride my bike at night. A quick 1hr ride tonight to get my legs and body back on the wagon again. Also an opportunity to check my gear and remember what I needed to wear and when to wear it.

I took my camera along and took some blurry night shots. On my way home I met up with the night riders and rode with them for about five minuites; Five minutes longer than Keith has this year.....anyway....remembering what I forgot...

I saw Adam Snoke on the Night Ride and it reminded me that I had a picture of him and Santa at Beanes Bar in Mt Joy.

Winter Training Rides in Lancaster County

Tuesday & Thursday (Night Ride) – Leave from Mount Joy Mennonite church at 6:30 p.m. We usually get back at the church at 8. This ride usually heats up on Bossler Rd. coming back into Mt. Joy.

Note: If you want to get a few extra miles in before the night ride at 6:30. Some people leave the church at 5 and ride the course backwards, and then with the group at 6:30. Just let Ken W know if you are planning on going early.

Saturday Karl’s Ride – The E-town/Lebanon group meet at the Elizabethtown High School at 9:00 a.m. and then ride to the Mount Joy Mennonite Church for the start of Karl’s ride at 9:30 a.m. We ride double pace line and this ride usually heats up after we get through Middletown. This ride usually last 2-2.5 hours depending on how many, and who shows up.

Sunday Ride – This ride leaves from the Getty Mart in Millersville at 10:30 a.m. This is a 38 mile loop back to Millersville. Usually this ride goes pretty hard and they don’t wait if you get dropped.

Cherry Crest Farms Strasuburg Pa

Saturday we headed over to Cherry Crest Farms with the kids. We went through the corn maze and then played some games. It was a great place to go as a family. I would recommend it to any one.

Before we entered the maze we got instructions of what to do, what not to do, etc, etc...RULES

The point was to find your way through the maze as quickly as possible, completing mad libs and finding puzzle pieces.

You carry a flag for assistance; people are high up in scaffolding to assist where needed.

We came home and carved some pumpkins

Camp Mack Ride Report

Just this past week, I got a new Mtn Bike a Cannondale Flash29er from my good friends at Gretna Bikes. I was eager to get out on the trails and have some fun. Until I got out this weekend I had only been riding around the neighborhood with my son. The thing is, with a new bike you have to make those small adjustments to make it work for you. I knew that at some point I wanted to go ride Camp Mack, in order to do so I knew that I had to make a trip to Green Mountain Cyclery so I could buy a pass for $25 to ride at Camp Mack (click link for explanation). If you ride at Camp Mack you need a Pass, we were stopped on the trail for a check for passes, and you MUST have it visible. If you ride Mack with out a pass you are just destroying the trust that is needed. The guys at SAMBA do a great job maintaining these trails and others. One of the trails we rode they just completed last weekend, they did a great job!

On Sunday I met up with Sez for some trail riding. Even with the amount of rain lately the trails were not too sloppy, wet in places, muddy in others. The ground is very sandy so it absorbs much of the water. I have not ridden a Mtn Bike on trails in a number of years, and the last time I did it seriously I broke my wirst up at Blue Marsh Lake (years ago). I had quite a reality check, I was anaerobic throughout many parts of the ride. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the time out on the trail. I made adjustments on my bike, got some tips from Sez and rode away feeling tired but good. I look forward to next time.

The Flood.....

To those of you who don't know, we got flooded a few weeks ago and things are only now starting to get back in order. I will spare you the details....only that we eventually got 5ft of water in our basement.....we lost appliances, our furnace electrical parts basically everything but the body of the tank, oil tank, toys, couch, chair, PhD paperwork, books and some other odds and ends. All items listed cost money but can be replaced, it could have been worse.

Thank you to all of our friends and family who either offered support or physically supported. I know there were a lot of people worse off than us.

I can offer the following to anyone who reads this blog. Please get a sump pump rider on your insurance, while it might not be much, it will pay for clean up. If you are faced with something like this; call your insurance company right away, and as soon as a number is released for FEMA call it. We use Donegal Mutual Insurance Company which is the administrator of our insurance home owners insurance (Penn National). I would highly recommend Donegal, they were responsive and it really pays to have a local company and local adjusters to assess your individual needs. I have heard of folks having insurance companies that are far away or are huge and they subcontract everything (makes an impact on the outcome).

We are on our way to replace items lost, and catching up with our Work and School schedules. I do not ever wish this upon anyone.

Huge Auction

Yesterday we went to an auction in the Mcallisterville area. It was at an Amish farm, they were selling anything and everything. It was an interesting experience, we were outnumberd by the Amish 2:1. Auctions bring varied prices; go for pennies that should go for bigger dollars, and other things go for way more than they should. For instance...we got a good deal on a dresser for $20....and heard one of the Ithica shotguns went for $1000, when it probably was only worth around $600. The food was plentful, taste good, but not at all healthy (pies, cakes, ice-cream, cookies, subs, fried fish sandwitches). I enjoyed the atmosphere, and taking in a slice of Pennsyslvania.
