Apple has claimed that its decision to drop the numerical naming regime for the new iPad was due to the fact it doesn't want to become predictable.

Rumours on the name of Apple's new tablet were flying left, right and centre in the lead up to its launch, with iPad 3 and iPad HD looking the most likely of options, but Apple surprised everyone when it revealed is was going to stick with "iPad".

When questioned by the Wall Street Journal on Apple's decision to go back to basics with the name, Apple's SVP of Global Marketing, Phill Schiller said: "because we don't want to be predictable".

How about the iSuperAwesomePad 3 HD?

Schiller's point is valid, as the tech world had created and then believed its own rumours that we were going to see the iPad3 / iPad HD only to be left red-faced when Tim Cook announced the new iPad.

It's thought that Apple is looking to align the iPad brand with its other products such as the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air series and this could mean the iPhone 5 may be called iPhone.

However if Apple doesn't want to be predictable, then it hasn't excelled itself with the "iPad" name, which isn't much of wild leap away from the norm. Surely something along the lines of the iSuperAwesomePad 3 HD would have really rocked the boat and got people talking?

8. i have been buying apple products for a long time.

recently i bought a cheap playbook. to my surpraise it has a 5MP camera and

shoots and shows 1080p same as ipad3.

it has a hdmi port and i take it to work place to show video on big screen,

presentations etc . on the road it has replaced my laptop some times.

higher resolution does not make a difference due to limitations of eye except

in text reading. in case tablets since lt is transmitted rather than reflected light text

reading will be slower than reading on paper ( kindle speed is half of reading on

paper). cheap playbook does multi tasking and has good browser.

playbook is great for work(play?) and ipad (fun?)

5. There naming system has always confused me a litle. On the back of my iPad2 it just says iPad, not iPad2. Now i know i've got an ipad2 just like someone buying the "new iPad" will know they have the 3rd generation. What is all the fuss about?!

4. I think this might not be the best idea. It's good to know how to refer to it by model. There are too many version of the Macbook to give them models, whereas iPads (being essentially a 'sealed unit' of the same size) is much better placed to have a 'number'. It also doesn't help when you're trying to sell one in the future on eBay!

I think they'll automatically be known as 'iPad 3' anyway.

Apple simply had to drop the numbering because its getting embarrassing for the "sheeple" that bought the first two incarnations so recently!

Tweet OnLive set to butt heads with Microsoft over Windows 7 app

The mightily-impressive OnLive Desktop app is offering Windows 7 to iPad and Android tablet users without Microsoft's permission, Redmond says.

OnLive Desktop brings virtual access to the Windows 7 desktop, including marquee apps like Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer, over OnLive's cloud servers.

Until now, it was unknown whether the company had Microsoft's blessing. It doesn't, but talks have been opened with a view to rectifying the situation.

Licensed scenario

In a blog post on Thursday, Microsoft's corporate VP of Worldwide Licensing and Pricing, Joe Matz, said users of the app must also have their own Windows license.

"We are actively engaged with OnLive with the hope of bringing them into a properly licensed scenario, and we are committed to seeing this issue is resolved.

"Customers that want to work with partners to have them host Windows 7 in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure solution on their behalf, can do so when the customer provides the partner licenses through the customer's own agreements with Microsoft."

Microsoft hopes that "partner" will be OnLive, but at the moment that's not the case. This interesting situation is definitely one to keep an eye on.

2. I hope they work something out - it's good to see Microsoft taking a "let's talk" approach instead of immediately trying to shut OnLive down, like certain tech companies I could mention. I've tried OnLive desktop and think it's pretty neat - looks good on my Transformer and works really well with a decent connection.

Google and Asus are collaborating on a 7-inch co-branded tablet to take on the likes of the Kindle Fire and Nook tablets, according to industry sources.

The reports comes via Digitimes, which claims sources revealed Google has been seeking a Taiwanese partner and having ruled out both HTC and Acer, the search giant opted to work with Asus.

Benson Lin, Asus' Corporate Vice President, told TechRadar at MWC 2012 that "Asus is very close to Google" and the latest reports look like they're about to get even tighter.

Original design and product quality

Asus impressed Google with its ODM capabilities and focus on creating quality products, the sources claim. Asus is said to be keen to get into bed with Google, as it feels it will help it break into the US tablet market, as well as helping to enhance its future Android products.

The sources suggest the reason Google didn't go with HTC was due to the Taiwanese firm wanting to take control in development and it not wanting to produce a budget tablet. Acer was ruled out due to its lack of in-house R&D facilities.

The rumoured co-branded tablet could make an appearance as early as May, with a competitive price tag of £125-£160 ($199-$249) as it looks to take on the budget end of the market.

Asus has stated that it prides itself on being one of the first (if not the first) companies to roll out the latest Google updates and the new 7-inch tablet could also be the first to sport the new Google Play Store.

Tweet Will you choose the new iPad or, er, the old one?

Shhh! Don't tell anyone, but Apple's made a thing! In news that hardly anybody noticed, let alone paid attention to, the obscure Californian company unveiled a new tablet that nobody's particularly interested in, taking a few half-hearted swipes at Samsung, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 in a pathetic attempt to try and get some press coverage.

Meanwhile back in our world, the new iPad launch was the usual hotly anticipated big deal.

Pre-launch coverage was so over-the-top that we half expected to read articles telling us what we could expect from the articles telling us what we could expect from the expectations people were expecting from the speculation about the cold fusion-powered holographic iPad 8 that a man in the pub thought DigiTimes probably said Apple were making.

As a result, Apple's actual announcement - the best iPad it's ever made and an update to the handy wee Apple TV - was greeted with online boos as well as oohs.

Hype aside, is the new iPad any cop? You betcha. As Patrick Goss explains, it has "a superlative Retina Display, quad-core graphics A5X processor, better connectivity and an improved camera". That display has a resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is "enough to leave the most hardened of screen nuts smiling". It's "genuinely beautiful".

So what else is new? There's an A5X processor, which has quad-core graphics (although it isn't, as some sites were claiming after the launch, a quad-core processor) and which Apple claims is twice as fast as Nvidia's Tegra 3.

There are better cameras, one of which is good for 1080p video recording if you don't mind looking as if you're filming with a dinner plate, and support for every wireless standard you can possibly imagine including Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G mobile broadband.

Faster processing, a better screen and faster wireless don't mean sacrificing battery life, though: Apple claims that you'll get the same 10-hour battery life (9 hours on 4G) as the iPad 2, although the slightly thicker, slightly heavier case suggests Apple may have had to cram more battery in there to achieve that.

There's new software too. The iOS 5.1 update brings iCloud streaming for movies, while Apple has brought iPhoto to the iPad and updated its other iLife and iWork apps to take advantage of that fancy new display. The rumoured Siri integration didn't make it into the final release - at least, not entirely.

The new iPad offers automatic dictation in English, French, Japanese and German.

How to buy a new iPad

You'll be able to get your hands on one on the 16th, although Apple's taking pre-orders already, and the prices haven't gone up: the cheapest new iPad, the 16GB Wi-Fi model, starts at £399, rising to £559 for the 64GB model and £659 if you want 4G too. We'd hang fire on buying that one until we actually get some 4G networks in the UK.

Apple did another interesting iPad thing: it kept the iPad 2, slashing its price by $100 in the US and dropping it from £399 to £329 for the 16GB model over here.

As Kate Solomon points out, "That is a crazily low amount of money for an Apple tablet – in fact, it's pretty low for any tablet. [It] could put paid to the rumours of a lower-cost iPad Mini to compete with the likes of the $199 Kindle Fire."

The new iPad launch and the iPad 2 price cut means tech fans face a bit of a Harry Hill moment: we like the new iPad, and we like the iPad 2. But which one is better? There's only one way to find out...

6. @simon_m I have owned one and tested many (perks of the job) and I can tell you with utter certainty its in the 5% of all phone cameras, Its not as good as the SGS2 camera or the new 4S but its far from pathetic.

5. @glenns most reviewers have panned the camera, and somebody I know who owns one is of the same opinion. I also used one in a phone store and found the results disappointing compared with the Galaxy SII, iPhone 4s and Sony Xperia Arc S, which all have fantastic snappers.

3. So called Retina display sucks! All the pixels in the world cannot make it look as good as even a modest OLED display. Not to mention completely unnecessary processing power drainage due to the resolution that is not needed on such a small screen. I expect the camera and the rest to be rubbish as with their older pads and phones.

1. £329 really is an awesome pricepoint, I think that's the biggest piece of news here. I also can't wait for that sort of screen to become the norm, it's very encouraging. The days of visible pixels are numbered.

The only thing that erks me is the cost for higher-memory versions; the extra 48GB costs £160. iCloud and Dropbox et al mean storage isn't such an issue for most of us, but when you consider a chunk of that 16gb base memory will be taken up with the OS and applications, it is a bit crippling.

It's the same achilles heel that ruined the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (though that also had a pathetic camera) and HTC Senstion XL. I wish manufacturers would stop stealing our expandable memory!

Pre-registration for the new iPad has started up in a number of places, but a curious addition to the key selling points has raised eyebrows.

According to the likes of Vodafone and The Carphone Warehouse, the iPad has "Wi-Fi + 4G [which] connects to fast data networks around the world. So wherever you go, you can download videos, music and email quickly."

The problem is that, unlike the US, the UK doesn't have the same LTE speeds that allow up to 73Mbps download speeds on the go – so can Apple really claim next-generation speeds for the device?

The issue over what could be called 4G in the US raged for a while – some networks believed HSPA+ was enough to be considered a step on from 3G and the regulatory bodies eventually agreed.

Same but different

However, there has been no such affirmation over in the UK; despite the fact speeds of up to 40Mbps+ will be theoretically possible with DC-HSPA when it begins popping out in the summer.

We've been in contact with Ofcom and networks to work out what's actually going on – but you won't be able to ship in a US-version of the new iPad and connect to the 4G trials being undertaken by the likes of O2, as the frequency bands used are different.

It's a headscratcher – but if the new iPad is allowed to be called the iPad 4G in the UK, then expect a slew of confusingly-named devices from the likes of Samsung et al over here as well shortly after.

4. @chisy not relevant , the original retina was a scam , with 20/20 vision you can see over 477ppi, it was just spin.

Jobs went on stage saying 300+ppi at 12" was retina i.e. no visible pixels, its not true, its a bloody good display but it still has visible pixels. Now they drop it to 264, you would have to have some bloody long arms or poor eyesight for that to be "retina"

I will defend the quality of the display, its one of the best around, just don't lie about it, it doesn't need lies or stupid marketing hype.

but regarding my previous post, they have just confirmed that it will be LTE model coming to the UK, so I guess it is real 4G, unlike the iPhone , which is still 3G with a 4G logo :(

You see how the lies confuse the facts, why cant they just be honest.

3. @glenns:On the retina display point, it is retina because the pixels are indistinguishable from the normal viewing distance. As the iPad is usually viewed further away than iPhone it needs less ppi to achieve the indistinguishable pixels...simples!

I agree with bradavon why should apple make different products for each nation, the iPad will connect at the best possible speed it can, surely that's what any consumer would want?

2. Your being very kind to Apple in the article, but the fact is that that have been very sneeky and basically changed the icon in the latest version of iOS to a 4G logo, nothing more, no new radio technology just a graphic.

In the UK its pretty meaningless since we hardly have a 3g network let alone 4G but it seriously takes away from genuine 4G phones and devices like those made by Samsung, HTC and others.

I've often seen boy racers re-badge their cars with Turbo badges but Apple should be above this sort of foul play.

what with the retina number fudging (retina used to be over 300ppi, the new iPad is 264ppi) and this, lets be polite " marketing scam " I would wonder what we can believe about the new iPad.

what about the claims of being more powerful than an xbox 360 and PS3, 4 times more powerful than a tegra 3 ??

oh and the last whopper... more popular than a PC.. 364million PCs in 2011, iPad 25 million.

Apple just announced that the long awaited iOS 5.1 update will be available today. In it, Apple is enabling support for a Japanese version of Siri. More updates from the event as they come in.

I used to experience the occasional second or two of lag when tapping on one of my inboxes or unlocking my phone. Everything feels much snappier in 5.1. Even loading apps like 1Password is noticeably faster.

The permanent camera button on the lock screen is a welcome addition. Also loving that you now swipe up rather than tap it to open the camera.

New Apple TV Now Supports 1080p

Apple just announced a new version of the Apple TV with 1080p decode support. The Apple TV OS gets a UI update and will presumably work with Apple's new support for Movies in iCloud.

Apple: We Shipped More iPads Last Quarter than Any PC Maker Shipped PCs

Here's an interesting chart Apple just threw up at its iPad event today. Apple shipped 15.4M iPads last quarter, more than any PC vendor was able to ship PCs out of their own product lines. Granted the implication here is that PCs and iPads are replacement goods for one another, but I'm not entirely sure that's true. The two categories seem very complementary to me. What does seem to be happening however is tablet purchases like the iPad may extend PC upgrade cycles (e.g. I'll put off a PC upgrade for another year or two and just get a tablet this year), which is reason for concern if you are a PC vendor.

I think in most cases the ipad is a companion to PC as opposed to a replacement.

Also, they obviously are framing these numbers in their favor here, but my take-away from that graphic is that around 85% of all larger screened personal computing devices are PCs. They can be good as your second or third 'computer', but are no substitiue for the sheer power a modern desktop provides. If you want to do something productive you need a PC. Tablets are today where netbooks were a couple years ago. HTC Sensation Android 4.0 update now available in some European countries

The first Android 4.0 update for an HTC phone is finally here! Today, HTC is making good on its promised of releasing the Android 4.0 update for the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE by rolling out the update to handset owners in Germany and a few Nordic countries. As expected , the Android 4.0 update is accompanied by HTC Sense 3.6 which features a few UI tweaks to accommodate new features included in the Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Now that the update is officially rolling out, we should see the update start popping up in other countries over the next few weeks. The HTC Sensation 4G from T-Mobile USA is also expected to receive the Android 4.0 update before the end of March, so keep a close eye out for an update notification over the next few weeks.

If you’re already received your Android 4.0 update for your HTC Sensation (or have played with the numerous leaks over the pas t month or two), leave us a comment below and let us know what you like about it. Some will be disappointed that they will not be treated to HTC Sense 4.0, but we’re sure people will enjoy Android 4.0 so much that they they won’t even notice – at least for a few weeks.

The new Beats audio SDK works with HTC Sense 3.6 as well. You just have to wait for add developers to integrate it into their applications.

Just updated my Sensation XE. First off, it seems markedly slower than before, less “snappy” and not as responsive.

Secondly, It’s very VERY obvious what’s HTC and what’s Google/Android in this update. HTC/Sense is totally outdated, the visual elements seem a bit childish compared to the new fresh/sharp Android. HTC’s icons and graphics are simplistic and seem less sharp/lower resolution. It’s like they have tried to make it as simple as possible to make it easier for my mother to use Sense. IMO, users are more advanced than that in 2012. At least people who are in the market for a top of the line phone.

Sense should be pushed down to lower end phones.

I really just cant own any android phone, thats not stock without rooting it anymore.. You guys should really look into Rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing cwm, then installing this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408351 Performance will be MUCH better and its basically stock 4.03. , they took the sense 3.6 4.0.3 build, completly desensed it and themed it to match aosp ics, so its very stable.

I’ve used a stock rom for ics and wasn’t a big fan of it maybe because all my androids had aversion of sense UI from the my touch 4g with the my sense UI to the two sensations I’ve had and only phone Ihad with stock was the first my touch 3g… I’m just so used to sense UI going to stock is kind of weird if that makes any sense but I might try stock again once I get the One S I’ll root my sensation again maybe …

I wonder, will root affect my receiving the update on T-Mo? I’ve been rooting since my G1 days in ’08, but never received an update on any of my phones since then while rooted… If I do receive it, will it mess up my root somehow? :/

It is a well known fact that root disables OTA. I question either your honesty (if you have indeed been rooting since the G1), or your intelligence.

No need for that sort of response, I have been rooting since the G1, although I am in no way a developer or anything of that sort. I have just heard different things from different people and never actually researched it much, so I though I’d just ask here in an Android community that is well respected and loved by myself.

Actually, root access does not block you from receiving OTA updates. If you have root and a stock bootloader, you can receive OTA updates just fine, but you will lose root once you install the update. If you have a custom ROM, you will not receive an update notification. That being said, if you have root, simply find the new ICS ROM on development forums (which will most likely be rooted) and flash it to your phone without having to wait for the OTA update.

Last week we posted that Google had selected ASUS to help build a low-cost Android tablet, and now Digitimes is reporting a similar story. According to their industry sources, Google and ASUS will release a 7-inch co-branded tablet as early as May with a price of $199-249.
Digitimes does not mention any other specs, but our sources previously told us the device would feature a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution display, quad-core Tegra 3 processor, and ship with a stock version of Android 4.x.
Sources say that Google was seeking a Taiwan-based partner to produce the device and approached Acer and HTC before deciding on ASUS. Acer “did not have in-house R&D capability” and HTC was “unwilling to develop a low-price model to impair its brand image”.
Earlier rumors suggested this device might not launch until June, so it’s interesting to see that the timeline might have been moved up. Google is normally known for delaying their flagship Android products, so this would be a first if they shipped one early.
If May is the target launch date, we could see Google and ASUS reveal this tablet at the CTIA Wireless convention in New Orleans on May 8-10.
Even though Digitimes says the price could be between $199-249, we strongly believe it will debut at $199 as this device will be marketed as a Kindle Fire killer.
We also thought that this device might be branded Google Play, but it turned out that was the name for Google’s new online content stores. I’ll go out on a limb and predict it might now be called Nexus Play.
Our audience was quite excited with the original rumor report with one reader proclaiming, “I will push small children over to get to it.” If all the details turn out to be true, Google and ASUS could have an instant winner on their hands.

on the serious side, its sad that HTC said “NO i dont wanna make “Cheap” stuff”, and acer just cant (i dont like their tablets for some reason and now i see why), what would said samsung ?
asus, dell and sony could make a tablet this cheap they have long history in making this kind of devices (computres in general and so), i dont mind asus doing the nexus tablets from here on the future

I feel that ASUS is the best choice, and in the end will be the major Android reseller on the market. Acer is iffy, and Samsung is pissing off their customers. HTC is moving to their own drum, and making some nice stuff, but ASUS is keeping their customer’s happy, as well as staying close to Google with Android.
I think this could be the turning point Google needs to step up their game. I would love to have a Transformer Prime HD, but I have a SGT 10.1.

Asus is really doing great they are on the right track teaming up with Google for the nexus tablet will only benifit them even more. The last few years Asus has been making there branding well known to those who haven’t heard of them . So keep up the good ASUS ill be looking forward to your devices in the future maybe even android phones in the US

A Nexus tablet device, at that unbeatable price point? An I’d be more than happy with Asus as manufacturer seeing what kind of stuff they’ve been putting out of late.

I will gladly take one for $250 w/ 8GB’s internal, a micro SD card slot, & a front facing camera (it can be VGA, just pretty good quality). If they can’t get the micro SD card slot, fine, leave it out, just give me the FFC. I was already going to get the ASUS MeMO 370T, for going away to the new college as a gift. Which is now rumored to come out around the same time as this, May/June. So this is great. Patience really is a virtue, it’s hard to wait, but waiting sometimes can serve you the better presents. I was gonna get a tablet by Christmas time, but I was told to wait because they’re just clearing out old stock (& what I wanted anyway was gone), & look what happened when I waited.

I would be okay with focusing on a nicer front camera and leave out the back camera. That’s just me, because I don’t need to take pictures with my tab. I would definitely video chat with my out of town family.
I also understand in the case of great specs, it’s needed for show. If micro SF and possible USB port, it will be money well spent. I can’t wait to use apps like splash top with a Bluetooth keyboard to knock out some work on the go.

I completely agree. It would only seem right to have a nice front facing camera on a tablet, especially a Google Nexus one. I mean it’s like having a mini-laptop, why not have a ffc for video chatting? It’s all for convenience & portability for all your usual functioning you would use on a laptop basically. & yes it would be money well spent. I would even stretch $300 for it, but I think $250 is perfectly reasonable for all that, especially considering if you just switch the rear camera on the MeMO 370T (which will be $250) & make it a front facing camera on the Google Nexus Tablet. I’m so excited myself, can’t wait :D

Totally agree! Forget and throw away the rear camera and focus on the front. That will save some money, maybe down to 189:)

Intel Medfield impresses in recent benchmarking scores

Folks in France will soon get a taste of Intel’s Medfield, Intel’s mobile chipset which could be about as powerful as Tegra 3 in many areas. The Santa Clara smartphone is heading to Orange later this spring, and thanks to German-based Caschys Blog, we now have some new benchmarks for the Medfield device. Caschy ran the Rightware and Vellamo browser benchmarks on the Santa Clara.
On the Rightware benchmark, the Santa Clara came in at 89,180, below the 98,272 score in the Galaxy Nexus, but slightly above the iPhone 4S’a 87,810.
When it came to the more well-known Qualcomm Vellamo benchmark, the Intel Medfield based Santa Clara phone truly shined. The Santa Clara scored much higher than the Galaxy Nexus, finishing slightly below the current industry-leading ASUS Transformer Prime. This is despite Medfield being a 1.6 GHz single core x86-based chipset.
This is not the first time we’ve seen Medfield being compared to the Tegra 3 chipset. Earlier this year, Medfield was clocked slightly higher than Tegra 3 in the CaffeineMark benchmarking tool, a single-threaded tool that doesn’t take advantage of the Tegra 3′s other cores. Today’s benchmark makes a bit more sense, as we’d expect the quad-core Tegra 3 to outperform the single-core Medfield, however slightly the difference may be.
While we always recommend you take benchmarks with a grain of salt, as they only tend to predict real world performance, today’s benchmarks give us good reason to get excited about what Medfield will bring to the Android table. We can’t wait to get our hands on a U.S. bound Medfield device, which could be coming as early as the next few months.

I agree. I would like to see a benchmark between an A15 32nm and A15 28nm and the Medifield to get a real comparison. I know this gives us something to go buy and idea of what to expect. But what if the new processors are much better as stated this will be outdated just after release. Not that is a big deal that happens all the time. But when will they come out with a new processor to compete with the new ones coming out all the time. The other big factor that has been brought up is we have not seen anything on battery life. That is one of things that everyone is looking forward to with new processors.

A9 is only about a year old. A8 chips only started coming out about 3 years ago. Iphone 3GS was one of the first along with the Samsung Hummingbird.

I think you guys are still believing that ARM architecture is good, but the true reality is starting to show up. Intel Medfield is single core compare to FOUR CORES ARM A9 in the Tegra 3…even is A9 is a year or two old…that core count difference between Medfield and Tegra 3 is big enough for Tegra 3 to outperform Medfield by far…but the benchmark shows the Tegra 3 is just slightly above Medfield…that is a reality nobody can hide.
The reality here is that Intel x86 architecture is much more mature and with better perfomance than ARM…ARM has been claiming the crown on smartphone for long time simply because there was ZERO competition. But now with Intel inside things will change. And also remember that already Intel announce a 2x performance increase by next year, so even with ARM A15 things will not change. Intel performance is the best without questioning. Just ask AMD, SUN Microsystem or IBM.

No. x86 is not meant for mobile phones, it uses too much power and draws too much heat. They may make all sorts of improvements and claims and get it better and better but in the end, it’s still going to run hotter and use more power than the ARM CPU’s. But that’s not the worst part, most games in the market won’t play on x86, they’ve been using Java’s Native code or something that basically removes the “portability” between platforms offered by Java. A lot of games and high end apps require certain local java native libraries/system calls that are dependent on ARM. Basically, a lot of programs will be missing from the market. I have several x86 based devices (Intel Moorestown) and can’t install so many apps (Including Angry Birds).
Them entering the Android arena is actually a bad thing. They’re going to fragment the system even more, certain apps will now only run on ARM while others only run on x86; this app is optimized for this CPU/GPU but this app is optimized for this other one, etc. etc. It’s almost as bad as Nvidia’s games optimized just for their Tegra devices. Yeah you get great performance and visuals but now there’s a game, an app, out there that a lot of Android people can’t run. Bringing x86 into the ecosystem will make it that much worst.
Honestly Intel should leave Android alone and “maybe” focus on less developed, less established, OS’s such as Windows Mobile, Windows 8 and/or WebOS. There’s not thousands upon thousands of ARM-Based App’s already in existence for them.

Both of those benchmarks relate to web browser performance. Of course you’d expect a high-clocked single core processor to do well. You do realize that the S4 scores double that Medfield score on Vellamo? A9-class performance is really disappointing for a new CPU.

The intel atom medfield processor benchmarked is a single core processor with Two execution units (hyperthreading). Hyperthreading is almost the same as having a dual core processor.
please never write an article describing an intel processor without discribing intel processor
Hyperthreading, as most Intel processors have made use of hypertreading technology for some years now!!!

Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most upgraded apps for the week. I’ve found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to look at what people are actually updating, and not focus on which apps have the most installs.
To find the most updated apps, I turn to AppAware. It’s a great tool that shows me which apps have active support from their developers and sometimes reminds me of an old app that I might have removed long ago. Make sure to install it so your activity can help determine our weekly top 10 list.

I’ve tried all the sports apps, including this one, and I always end up returning to ESPN’s mobile site. ScoreMobile looks to be well liked among its users with an average review score of 4.4. They recently added in-depth UFC coverage featuring interactive live blogs, so maybe I’ll try it out again. ScoreMobile also supports live event push alert notifications, so you can keep up the latest scores of your favorite teams.

How does your mobile malware protection rank?

Are anti-virus apps necessary for Android users? Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP of Android Engineering, recently said, “I don’t think so. That’s obviously an individual choice, but I haven’t felt the need for it. Let’s put it this way, I don’t run those apps.”
How does your malware protection app rank?
Security institute AV-Test sees it differently. They claim that Google’s Bouncer technology only checks apps for malware during the time of publication in Android Market, so apps that download their malicious code after installation can’t easily be detected.
AV-Test recently inspected 41 different malware detection apps for Android to see how they performed. They found that seven apps produced average family detection results above 90%. These apps include Avast, Dr. Web, F-Secure, Ikarus, Kaspersky, Lookout, and Zoner. AV-Test says, “Using these products you don’t have to worry about your malware protection.”
They go on to note that even if a product scores poorly in malware detection it may have other convenient features, such as remote lock and wipe, backup and phone locating, that make it useful for your purposes.
But that begs the question. Why would you want a security app with poor malware detection, when there are several good ones to choose from.
Some security apps were not too happy with the results. AV-Test updated their report to note that MyMobileSecurity, NQ Mobile, Total Defense all said the testing methods were considered imprecise or flawed. All those apps were listed in the bottom half of the report, so it’s easy to see why they might have a problem with the results.
When it comes to my mobile security app of choice, I trust Lookout. I never run anti-virus software on my PC, but I choose to use it on my phone for the piece of mind and phone location feature. It doesn’t affect my battery life or performance, so I always have it installed on all of my devices. I also appreciate the Lookout Blog that seeks to inform its users rather than play on their fears.

I am happy (so far) with Lookout, as well. I tend not to download “risky” apps for myself, but my kids constantly want some stupid app to play with, and THOSE I tend to not trust as much, so I am glad to have Lookout.
The people I feel really need to be educated are the “less technical” people (you know, your grandmother or father or the cousin no one talks about) as they may not fully understand the risks.
I am all for letting you install whatever you want on your phone, but you need to be smart about it.

They have always been intrusive on any computer installed on with me. I prefer avast.
With that being said, i do not use any malware/virus protector on my phone. I am smart enough to know which apps are trustworthy or not.

If the VP of Android Engineering says it’s not required, then why would I want to waste my money, time, and valuable system space loading any of these apps? Malware companies use fear tactics to sell their products. I guess their real fear is that you won’t buy their unneeded product…..

Because Android is open-source. Anyone can get the codes for the software and create what they want and get any information they want. That’s like saying Windows firewall is enough to protect your PC or like saying she said she’s a virgin I don’t need protection. Everyone needs protection.

Yes lockout is free, BUT it still takes up valuable space on the drive – AND – it is using valuable resources causing your device to run slower. As far as Android being open-source, that is true, but then explain if that is all that matters, why is it that no one has ever received any viruses or malware. Obviously there are other factors in play here other than the open source issue. Bottom line; when and IF (and that’s a big if) it ever happens, then I’ll consider installing one of these apps, but until then as they say – why wake a sleeping dog…

im pretty sure I’ve read that some people have had trojans installed from infected market apps. Even on my old Sammy epic 4g, lookout didn’t slow the os enough to make it unbearable. I’ll take the peace of mind lookout provides and sacrifice what little storage space it takes.

I concur with you, anti virus on the pc is just a load of marketing bull and scare tactics. I’ve never used them and never will.
Similarly, on smart phones the only useful bit about anti virus is the remote wipe function……..if it actually works in a timely fashion. I’ve never tried it.
Please spread the word, the anti virus companies just want your money. They are the ones we should inoculate against.

The thing I like about the Trend Micro solution is the ablility to block calls and text messages, either by keywords or sender (for texts). We use it on our Exchange Servers.. awesome product, so i tried it on my GS 2.. had Lookout on my Captivate.. other than no call or text blocking, it was a great product also.

Well, Avast FTW! First TheftAware rocked. They had the best Anti-Theft options IMHO and the way they worked with rooted phones was pure genius. Anti-Theft that can survive a factory reset? Awesome. But it was like $5, still way worth it. But then Avast goes and buys them and integrates TheftAware within their program, along with a firewall comparable to DroidWall, and offers the whole thing for free? So I know they ROCK at Anti-Theft, and now according to this they ROCK in Anti-Malware (which I never really felt I needed but the Firewall and Anti-Theft in one was nice so the Anti-Virus/Malware thing was an added bonus), and their Firewall is not bad either. So instead of an Anti-Virus Program, an Anti-Theft Program like TheftAware and a Firewall program like DroidWall, it’s all in one; and it’s free. Why aren’t you running Avast?

I have been using Lookout for several years now and I like it. I usually get all my apps from “Google Play”(Android Market, LOL!) and don’t sideload, so I feel pretty secure. It is all about choice and what makes you feel good inside.

I used avast for the root integration. It ensures that even if a thief does a factory reset my tracking software can still be activated to recover my phone. All for free. Yes it comes with antivirus built in and according to this report a pretty good one but that is really just icing on the cake

I used to use lookout until it couldn’t detect the malware plankton. The way I found out was i I use kaspersky on my computer and they gave me a full year of there mobile app for free so I installed it the same tike I also had lookout on my phone. I downloaded a game from the market and kaspersky warned me of the malware plankton which is a trojan that was attached to this game lookout did nothing. When i asked lookout they said its not a malware everything is OK. However if you search the web for it even Google themselves recognize it is malicious and have pulled appspfrom the market because of it. Needless to say I won’t use lookout anymore because they lied, and treated me like I was stupid too.

I use lookout too and I love it. Twice i’ve left my phone somewhere and lookout allowed me to find it fast and easily. It’s the main reason I use it. Anti virus is just a bonus

While ur iPhone user here is calling me asking “Can Find My IPhone locate when the phone is off?” and “If they wipe the device can i still locate it” Which neither it can do, ill be getting a text message with the person who stole my phone’s number as well as his geo. Good Day.

While I agree that most people don’t need antivirus on Android phones I am not in that category. I sideload alot on my rooted devices and have used Lookout since day one. I haven’t caught anything yet but it gives me a degree of peace of mind that makes it worthwhile to me. YMV

Welcome to regular buyer’s guide column where we break down each carrier to let you know about current promotions and pick the best devices. Each week we will rotate between the big four US carriers, so that each buyer’s guide gets refreshed every month. Read on for Verizon’s best devices and deals.
Current Promotions and News
Double Data: This month Verizon keeps their Double Data promotion that gives users double the data allowance for the same price. With the special promotion, subscribers will get 4 gigabytes for $30, 10 gigabytes for $50 and 20 gigabytes for $80. Double Data also applies to mobile hotspot plans where subscribers can now get 6 gigabytes for $50 and 12 gigabytes for $70 a month. We don’t know how long this promotion will last, so take advantage of it while you still can.
12 Day Droid Sale: For the next couple weeks, Verizon if offering a 12 Day Sale that has several Droid phones on sale at only $9.99 for new activations. Sale devices include the Droid Charge, Droid X2, Droid Incredible 2, and Droid 3.
St. Patricks Day Sale: From now until March 17th, Verizon has the HTC Rhyme on sale as part of a special St. Patricks Day Sale. The device is FREE for new activations. HTC already said the Rhyme would be upgrade to Android 4.0, so this is a nice little phone for free.
Expanded 4G LTE coverage: This month Verizon announced expanded 4G LTE coverage in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Mississippi. Verizon also said that 4G LTE is coming soon to Naples, Florida.
Ice Cream Sandwich updates: This month Verizon announced 14 devices that were scheduled to receive Android 4.0. No exact dates were given, but it’s nice to know these devices will be upgraded.

Best Android Phone: Galaxy NexusGalaxy Nexus
For the second month in a row, Samsung retains the top pick. Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the best Android phone on any carrier and that’s why I picked one up on launch day. I’ve been extremely satisfied with my purchase and so have many others.
Verizon normally sells the phone for $299 with 2-year agreement, but Amazon has it on sale at $99 for new customers, and $259 for upgrades.
The main selling point of this phone is Android 4.0 and the promise of speedy software updates from Google. Their Nexus line of phones are always the first devices to receive the latest version of Android, which has many benefits. For example, Google just rolled out their Chrome Beta browser that is only available on Android 4.0.
Even though this is my favorite phone, there are still some weak areas that we should point out incluidng camera quality, battery life, and the external speaker. I’m quite happy with the 5 megapixel camera, but I have noticed it is not quite as good as some other Android phones, like the 8 megapixel shooter on the Galaxy S II. For the battery life, I would suggest picking up the official 2100 mAh extended battery. Verizon had it on sale for $25, so shop around and see what offers are available. Leaked details also show that Google will improve the sound volume in their Android 4.0.4 update.

Runner up: It’s worth nothing that the Droid RAZR MAXX is also an awesome device, but it still runs Android 2.3.x at this time. We reviewed the original RAZR last year and found it to be a quality purchase, and Motorola has improved upon that with the new model that has a 3300 mAh battery with all day battery life.

Best Android Phone with Keyboard: Droid 4Droid 4
Once again, this was a pretty easy choice. Many Verizon customers consider the original Droid one of their all time favorite devices, and Motorola has continued to innovate with each new model. Our very own Sean Riley will be posting his full review of the device soon, but we are confident enough in the Droid series to go ahead and recommend this device now.
The Droid 4 just launched today on Verizon, where it is being sold in stores for $199 with 2-year agreement. Like always, Amazon has it priced cheaper at $49 for new customers ($50 cheaper than last month), and $199 for upgrades.
The most notable features of the Droid 4 include support for Verizon’s 4G LTE network, LED edge-lit 5-row QWERTY keyboard, 4 inch qHD display protected with Gorilla Glass, and Motorola’s new Smart Actions app.
Verizon is shipping the Droid 4 with Android 2.3.5, but Motorola already announced that the Droid Bionic, RAZR, and Xyboard would be receiving Android 4.0. We expect the same treatment for the Droid 4. Motorola just delivered on their promise to upgrade the Xoom tablet to Android 4.0, and if their merger with Google goes through we should see improved software updates.
About the only negative thing we can say about the Droid 4 is its locked bootloader, something that is comment with Motorola phones. If you want a fully unlocked phone, then go with the Galaxy Nexus.
Best Android Tablet: Droid XyboardDroid Xyboard 8.2
Because of the current data plans, I’m not a huge fan of carrier branded Android tablets. However, if you need an Android tablet with 4G LTE connectivity, then the Droid Xyboard should be your pick.
Verizon currently offers five different Xyboard models with different sizes and storage options to fit multiple budgets. The 8.2 inch Xyboard is selling at $429 for the 16 GB model and $529 for the 32 GB model. The 10.1 inch Xyboard is priced at $529 for 16 GB, $629 for 32 GB, and $729 for 64 GB. All prices are with a 2-year contract and require a data plan.
As you can see these tablets are some of the most expensive around, but they are the best tablets on the largest and fastest 4G LTE network.
If you would rather purchase a WiFi-only tablet and tether it to you phone, then I’d suggest the Asus Transformer Prime 32 GB model (available at $499 from multiple retailers).
Best Android Phone on a Budget: Incredible 2Droid Incredible 2
Now that online stores offer high-end devices for $99 with new 2-year agreement, it is becoming harder and harder to suggest a budget phone. The lower priced devices generally don’t receive major software updates to newer versions of Android and are outdated as soon as you buy them.
However, if I’m forced to pick a budget phone on Verizon then I’ll go with the HTC Droid Incredible 2. As mentioned above, Verizon has it on sale for only $9.99, but Amazon has it on sale for $0.01.
Highlights of the Droid Incredible 2 include 4-inch WVGA display, 1 GHz Snapdragon S2 processor, 8 MP rear camera, 1.3 MP front camera, 16 GB internal storage, and support for Verizon’s 3G network.
HTC recently announced that they were updating the Incredible S to Android 4.0, which happens to be the international version of the Droid Incredible 2. There is no guarantee that Verizon will also upgrade their model, but it’s a good sign that it could be possible.
What’s Coming NextOnly leaked images of the Incredible 4G.
Not many leaks have appeared for Verizon phones launching in the next 1-2 months. The only thing on our radar is the HTC Droid Incredible 4G (aka HTC Fireball), which is likely to be a high-end device with 4G LTE. We don’t know much about the specs, but it is expected to launch around April 26th.
Mobile World Congress took place last month and we saw plenty of new phones, but nothing announced for Verizon. HTC said their One X is coming to a record number of carriers, and we suspect it will eventually land on Verizon. This will be the dual-core Snapdragon S4 version that has integrated LTE.
We also saw the LG Lucid leak out, but this just looks like a refresh of the LG Spectrum. It still features the older Snapdragon S3 processor and we see nothing else about the device to make it stand out from the crowd.
The next big event when we might see new devices is CTIA Wireless, which takes place on May 8-10 in New Orleans. We expect Verizon to announce new devices at this show.
Finally, everyone is still waiting on the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S III. Verizon never carried the official version of the Galaxy S II, but they did have the Galaxy Nexus it its place. Hopefully Verizon can deliver a pure version of the Galaxy S III, and not some nerfed up Droid variant.

Good write-up! Unfortunately (or fortunately since it’s likely due to the Galaxy Nexus?), there’s not a whole lot of movement happening at Verizon right now. Honestly, it would be hard for me to recommend anything over the Galaxy Nexus with the only exception being for those who require a keyboard, then Droid 4 it is.

I wouldn’t expect any major announcements from American carriers until CTIA in May. It’s also likely that that’s where we’ll see the Galaxy S III, assuming Samsung is sticking to its word that it wants to see a more global launch this year.

If you root your phone you can WiFi Tether/HotSpot for FREE!!! As a side note, on my now stock non-rooted DROID Bionic, built-in USB Tethering is free and requires no special software on a Windows 7 PC. For the MAC side there are a few USB Tethering apps.

If I’m committing to a new phone for 2 years, I want it to be as future proof as possible. The Nexus is definitely appealing, due to its fast upgrade path, but we’re at the end of the Cortex A9′s lifecycle.

Taylor I want to agree with you that the galaxy nexus is probably the best phone Verizon has to offer. I did have a couple of practical issues that I would like to point out, however. The volume wasn’t loud enough for notifications and one big issue in my house was signal strength. I would consistently get one bar and have dropped calls and have no data connection. Before anyone bashes me, I don’t like to root my phones because I have had simple things go wrong in the past and don’t want to have any headaches with re-flashing. It wasn’t a lemon because I ordered 3 of them off Amazon and had the same results on all my lines inside my house. I got Amazon to do an exchange for DROID RAZRs and my results were much better. I had full bars and no dropped calls or network connection failing and for some odd reason the RAZR actually had a longer battery life than the nexus. So I went with RAZRs instead. Despite the lack of ics I like the RAZR but I do miss the nexus. So if anyone has weird indoor coverage issues with a nexus try a different model phone and see if you ahead better results. I live in the Boston area which should have great coverage, so no its not like I’m out in the sticks. Motorola made a fine product, now if they could just update it to ics I’d be a happy camper.

the radios samsung uses aren’t the best it seems all their phones struggle in spotty reception areas where as that is where moto and their radios excel.

The title should be the most popular cellphone not the best. Unless functionality is not a concern. On Verizon the best all around phone is the Rezound. The Razr Maxx has less issues than the Galaxy Nexus. Samsung Galaxy Nexus wins because of ICS and the first to get updates makes up for all the issues it has is getting old. Bootloader unlockable so, so is the Resounds bootloader. I have 11 lines between 2 accounts and have had the privilege of trying out a couple of each so I have some experience before people start flaming me. We have now 4 Resounds, 2 of them rooted and rommed, 1 Razr Maxx, had 2 Galaxy Nexus got rid of one and kept the other as a toy and backup phone. Fun phone but to glitchy for me.
Popular, The fastest updates, doesn’t mean the best. Can’t say newest OS anymore because there are phones out with newer.

Leroy i agree with you 100%. This article is a prime example of why i do my own research on smartphones before deciding which one to get. I never buy based on what these ‘reviewers’ deem to be best. After doing a spec-to-spec and feature-to-feature comparison of all the phones on the market right now, the htc rezound clearly stood out as the best choice.

For 2 reasons: the ultra thin phones aren’t as comfortable to hold, and more importantly, by making phones so thin space within the phone is sacrificed that could’ve been used for added features INCLUDING bigger batteries! This whole thinner-is-better perception of smartphones is just plain stupid.

Does it have the highest pixel density of ANY phone on the market?! can its front cam record HD video?! can it switch the order of its homescreens with one long-press?! can its homescreens rotate 360 degrees in both directions?! can it record slow-motion HD video?! can it edit and trim video straight from the gallery?! does it have the best audio capabilities of any phone?! does it have expandable memory?! does it have a 2meg front & 8meg rear cam?! I have a GN as you do. But I also have 4 Rezounds, Razr Maxx, Dinc2, and a few others. 2 of the. Rezounds Bootloaders unlocked. All are daily drivers but for Dinc 2 we use overseas and the GN I play with only. Got rid of stock GN. Issues issues etc. Unless you think your precious GN is better than my GN, I have 4 Rezounds and a Razr Maxx that’s a better overall PHONES than my Galaxy nexus!!!

I have never been on sprint or have had an EVO! And I sure wouldn’t mind seeing an update to my Galaxy Nexus soon! There are phones coming out on 4.0.3 while the GN is still on 4.0.2. The Galaxy S I believe started on GB and is still on it. Timely updates? I prefer a phone that works in all aspects and works when I need it to.

Agree. I think people are forgetting first and foremost these are phones. It doesn’t matter how many updates it gets and how quick it gets them, it seems like for some reason the nexus just can’t really do to well(for many) in areas such as getting a signal and holding it. No matter how much you hate moto you have to give it to them, they put good radios in their phones. I think for being a nexus the galaxy nexus just wasn’t up to par. Not to mention look how long it is taking for them to update it and the nexus s.

I looked at the rezound and ended up getting the thunderbolt.. wish I would have gone with the rezound . Seems like a nice phone but I’m due for a upgrade soon holding out for new phones to see what beast comes out next lol

Had the GSM version of the Nexus on T-Mobile but then had to switch to the Nexus on Verizon for work. Never had a single issue with the GSM version but the LTE version has a crappy radio to say the least. I live in the NYC area and when in the city it would hold the 4G signal but go even a bit outside the city and forget it- hit and miss. I was so disappointed as I am a fan of all things Google and loved the notion of pure ICS and frequent updates. However the other person is right that we forget that they are phones as well until they don’t work! Exchanged for a Razr Maxx and I must say I am impressed with the phone and battery life. LTE network is crazy fast and the radios hold the signal in the exact areas the Nexus did not, like 3-4 bars vs no bars in the same exact area. Just be careful if you are thinking of the Nexus and take a look at the Maxx- actually a great phone. Blur is not as horrible as I thought either but still not as good as pure ICS.

Put me in the camp who prefers the Rezound. I’m not sure how so many reviewers have overlooked the greats features, performance, and comfort of this device. To each his own, but to me the Nexus comes up short in basic categories like ability to hold a signal and sound quality. I think the best on Verizon title should be between the Razr Maxx and the Rezound because each device delivers on it’s promises. The Nexus seems more like a tease.

I personally tried the Rezound out for a few weeks before I had the GN. Honestly, the Rezound isn’t all that great. I found myself annoyed with the screen due to its crappy viewing angles, annoyed with the light leakage of its capacitive buttons through the bottom of the screen, and lag(less than my Charge, but more than my GN). I have to admit, the camera on the Rezound was better, but as for radio quality and maintaining a sinal, I found them to be about equal.
Unfortunately, due to certain circumstances, I had to return my GN. I’m up for an early upgrade now, so I’m waiting to see if Verizon announces anything soon. If not, I’ll definitely get the GN again.

Crappy viewing angles, light leakage and lag?! C’mon now! I get the impression that your ‘looking’ for faults rather than actually having problems. I have the rezound and i have NO gripes about viewing angles. Even when i tilt the phone slightly the images still look very good. And the “light leakage” you speak of from the capacitive buttons can ONLY be seen if you slant the phone at an almost completely horizontal angle while holding your face right up to the screen and looking down the length of the phone!!! Lol! That’s not a problem with the phone, its CLEARLY you trying to find fault in the device! And i don’t experience lag on mine; it’s VERY responsive when performing tasks.

Much of the pre-launch talk was about what the new iPad would be called – but Apple cut through that with the slightly odd decision to call it simply the 'new iPad'. Whether this brings confusion, especially with the iPad 2 being kept on sale as part of a range, remains to be seen, but moniker aside; this was an update that brought a wealth of goodies for technophiles and enthusiasts. Apple's iPad 2 launched in March 2011 to a huge fanfare, bringing a whole host of improvements and a thinner, lighter form-factor, but not the heavily tipped HD 'Retina' screen that the iPhone 4 had brought. This time around Apple has decided the time is ripe for a brighter, sharper screen with a much higher resolution, and the impact is clear to see. That higher resolution is 2048x1536, less than the Retina screen on an iPhone, but designed to be held slightly further away, so Apple has plumped to keep the Retina name because you cannot, in its words, see the pixels at that distance. The actual real-life impact of the improved display is the standout feature of the new iPad; it's crisper, sharper and a genuine and immediate pleasure to use because of this. Just browsing through photos in the new iPhoto app is enough to leave the most hardened of screen nuts smiling. It's genuinely beautiful – and a huge step on from not only its now cut-price predecessor, but also many of its Android rivals. The impact of a new screen even on everyday tasks like browsing is impressive. The resolution shift makes websites sharper and easier to read, and lessens the need to zoom in on text. Even with the full TechRadar site on screen the words are clear, making the whole experience nicer. Another major headline is the arrival of an A5X processor with quad-core GPU, making the iPad a hugely powerful device that is quite capable of dealing with hugely complex computational tasks. Its predecessor was already perfectly capable of dealing with the vast majority of the everyday needs for a tablet user, but the injection of even more capacity could see a big spike in what applications can offer. Expect even more from games on the platform, and a noticeable change in the speed with which the device performs its tasks. We spent a little time with the dreadfully named, but beautifully visual, Sky Gamblers Air Supremacy. You can swoop through the air in stunning visuals and the processor is powerful enough to manage it with not even a hint of stutter. Apple suggested in the launch that people said they preferred gaming in an iPad – and while we are not going to suggest that we agree with this – the enhanced resolution means that this will not disappoint those used to the visuals on a PS3 or Xbox 360. It is games like that this that best show the progression of the new iPad over the iPad 2 – the changes may have been predicted, but the overall impact on the device is genuinely impressive. With 1080p movies now available the screen also comes into its own in terms of media playback. The clips we saw of film Tintin were lovely although the resolution is obviously less than the screen is capable of. There is the odd downside - the new iPad is thicker and heavier than its predecessor, although it's not a huge difference in the hand. We also can't be too gushing about the transcription built into the device; in a noisy press room the device simply could not interpret our words so we'll be aiming to give that a proper workout in a less difficult environment. Our first impressions of the camera for photography and video were good - but again not in the best of environments to give it a proper test - something we will be doing as soon as possible. Early verdict Although we're keen to look at a few things more closely - the transcription, the dimensions and the fact that the unit we were using was running pretty darn hot - this is a tablet that impressed us hugely on its first showing. With a wealth of wonderful apps, a more powerful processor, far superior connectivity and a better camera, this is already a step up. But it is that display that makes the new iPad stand out from the crowd. It's a beautiful, welcome addition that takes this device back to the top of the tablet tree, and it is likely to bring a massive slice of business to an Apple store near you. I have an ipad2 and since others use it more than i do, i bought a cheap playbook. to my surpraise it has a 5MP camera and shoots and shows 1080p same as ipad3. it has a hdmi port and i take it to work place to show video on big screen, presentations etc . on the road it has replaced my laptop some times. higher resolution does not make a difference due to limitations of eye except in text reading. in case tablets since lt is transmitted rather than reflected light text reading will be slower than reading on paper ( kindle speed is half of reading on paper). cheap playbook does multi tasking and has good browser. Sprint users are about to have a new entry in the low-end Android market. The nation’s number 3 carrier has officially announced the ZTE Fury, a 3.5″ Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset that launch this coming Sunday for $19.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate.
The ZTE Fury features:

While not the high-end Galaxy Nexus that should be launching as early as next month, the ZTE Fury brings another affordable handset to Sprint’s network for those who don’t need a blazing-fast device. That said, it’s difficult for me to imagine someone picking up the ZTE Fury for $20 when Amazon is offering the likes of the Nexus S 4G and EVO Design 4G for a penny, and the powerful Galaxy S II for $49.99.
Still, if the ZTE Fury manages to tickle your fancy in some way, you’ll be happy to know that you can pick one up at your local Sprint store this Sunday, for $19.99 after $50 mail in rebate. Anyone out there heading to Sprint this weekend?

If not, it would be a horrid idea to get this Fury, as you’re paying more out of pocket for that than a phone that’s probably at least 5x better. Paying $50 for an SGSII vs. $70 for this Fury and then waiting for two months to get $50 back? I’m pretty sure that’s a legit no-brainer.

Yea you can if you go through amazon. No rebates just instant discount for signing a contract. Be aware though, you have to keep your service and phone for 6 months. If you decide to cancel your service, outside of Amazons 30 day return period, you’ll be charged $250 per cancelled line on top of the etf you pay to the carrier.

Samsung patent filing: Convert your whole device into screen real estate

Samsung has been getting creative lately. As if devices with flexible displays weren’t innovating enough for 2012, Sammy has just filed for another cool new patent. The concept revolves around “smart device skins,” a technology that will extend your display to the bezel, sides and back of the device.
Virtually converting devices into displays, this technology could bring a whole new definition to customization and screen real estate. It would break multiple limitations that we currently experience. For example, one would be able to change the design of the device at will. It would also be possible to extend images to a larger size, taking advantage of all available space.
The good news is that this will not only be implemented to Samsung’s future line-up. According to the patent filing, the manufacturer also plans to sell this technology as an accessory. The product is described as a “film layer” that one can install in the device, leaving holes for important hardware (display, cameras, etc.). Much like a regular smartphone case.
This film layer will somehow be connected to the main display. We are not sure how that works exactly, but it raises one concern – battery life. This issue has been haunting Android users since the operating system’s release (not to mention other platforms). And while we do not yet know how power efficient this technology will be, it is something to keep in mind.
Regardless of how exciting the concept sounds, it may come with some downsides. We will simply have to wait until more details are released. That is, if this project ever sees the light of day; we have seen many patent filings never been carried out. Is this something you guys would even want if it did came out? Would you enjoy extending your display to the whole device?

Unless I’m missing something here , I don’t think this would have an appreciable effect on battery life. This seems to just be a system of coordinating the wallpaper with a decal around the whole phone. Am I wrong?

The trouble would be with touch detection near the edge when you are holding it. That’s why they have bezels now.

I think people need to try using the devices without holding onto the front of the device. I have never used either my phone or tablet by holding onto the bezel to stabilize the device. It really wouldn’t take much getting used to for a user who does to not do it any more. Use your thumb to homd it along the side while the rest of your hand is used to cradle the device from behind.

I’m sure it would have to be without touch capability (or touch enable/disable), but this would be the ultimate in customization. Not that it’s anything you would really need, but just imagine skinning your device with motion video or changing colors, live audio meter, etc.
Still trying to think of a practical purpose for this outside of perhaps gaming as already mentioned, but still.. it’s a very slick idea.

If they use a film with passive display like the color e-ink battery life shouldn’t be problem. It would change only so often. I can see use something similar to but more advanced than Sony’s color changing bezel light on their phones.

To me it seems that this film layer is passive: it has a single print on it. Only the image on the screen will change. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems that this is about the same as Gelaskins (http://www.gelaskins.com/store/phones) does, except for that it allow for different (fitting) images for the screen.

Damn that’s a nice ass patent concept I wouldn’t mind having a phone like that. Samsung make some creative thing thinking outside the box. I hope it comes out next year when I can upgrade but by then the next nexus would be out.

Launch of HTC One may be delayed by Qualcomm S4 production halt

Consumers hoping to get their hands on a new Android phone powered by a Qualcomm S4 SoC (system on a chip) this spring may have to wait a few extra weeks. Reports are coming in that TSMC, the manufacturer of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chip, abruptly stopped production of all their 28nm chips three weeks ago to make changes to the production process. Production is expected to be back in full swing in “short order” with supply levels reaching normal levels by the end of March.
The three week production halt of Qualcomm’s S4 chip (which began before Mobile World Congress) could translate into supply shortages or even launch delays for a few Android phones this spring. The HTC One series relies on the S4 chip for the HTC One S and One XL (One X for AT&T). While the phones are expected to debut in Europe during the first week of April, T-Mobile USA, AT&T and other service providers in Europe have not announced exact release dates for the HTC One.
The Qualcomm S4 SoC has been in full production since early 2012, so it’s hard to say how this production issue will actually affect the different OEMs who are using the chip in their phones. Handset delays of supply shortages will be directly affected by Qualcomm’s inventory level before the production stoppage. We hope TSMC gets the production line back up and running in the next few days. Any more delays could cause a serious chip supply shortage for Qualcomm that could carry into the summer.

The article was about Qualcomm’s S4 SoC, and supply issues by TSMC, the manufacturer (who also manufactures the Tegra for NVIDIA). HTC has absolutely no control over it, you idiot. HTC can’t “make sure all goes well” no more than you can turn off the voices in your head and your insecurities and sick habits. No more than HTC could control the supply of OLED-based screens for the DInc when it was first released.
At what point did anyone seem upset that they needed to “chill”? I saw nothing in the article or the comments that indicated anger or panic. My upgrade doesnt kick in til July anyway. And I’m still very happy with my Sensation. Waiting on right device. Might be the One x might be something else. But I remember a similar situation with the Droid Incredible samoled screens(this had more to do with samsung i think using them for their devices though) This I doubt will be as bad as that.

‘full production’ since early 2012? really?
In the EDA business, TSMC is known to have big yield issues on its 28nm process, and now it looks like they had to rethink the whole process for 3 weeks.
3 week stop is HUGE in the fab industry. A foundry is supposed to be working 24/7 !
I think Qualcomm had to do some sort of paper launch of the S4 at MWC2012, because the S3 is soo outdated.
But I expect the street availability of all S4-based phones to be much delayed. Much like nVidia lied on the real availability of Transformer Prime before Christmas!

LG comes in the mobile market with the new unlocked cell phone having drastic changes. This time LG Optimus revealed the handset with latest version of the Android platform which v4.0 and a powerful processor Quad Core. The handset is announced by the company and expected to launch in 2012.
Operating System: Operating system of the LG Optimus 4X HD assumes to be the distinct feature of the latest mobile. LG Optimus 4X HD having the Android platform with Android OS, v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and that’s the latest version of the Android OS. Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9 is the processor supports the mobile with Nvidia Tegra 3 Chipset.
