Scientists predict rare 'hibernation' of sunspots

WASHINGTON (AFP) – For years, scientists have been predicting the Sun would by around 2012 move into solar maximum, a period of intense flares and sunspot activity, but lately a curious calm has suggested quite the opposite.

According to three studies released in the United States on Tuesday, experts believe the familiar sunspot cycle may be shutting down and heading toward a pattern of inactivity unseen since the 17th century.

           The signs include a missing jet stream, fading spots, and slower activity near the poles, said experts from the National Solar Observatory and Air Force Research Laboratory.
"This is highly unusual and unexpected," said Frank Hill, associate director of the NSO's Solar Synoptic Network, as the findings of the three studies were presented at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Solar Physics Division in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

           "But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation."
Solar activity tends to rise and fall every 11 years or so. The solar maximum and solar minimum each mark about half the interval of the magnetic pole reversal on the Sun, which happens every 22 years.

           Hill said the current cycle, number 24, "may be the last normal one for some time and the next one, cycle 25, may not happen for some time.

           "This is important because the solar cycle causes space weather which affects modern technology and may contribute to climate change," he told reporters.

           Experts are now probing whether this period of inactivity could be a second Maunder Minimum, which was a 70-year period when hardly any sunspots were observed between 1645-1715, a period known as the "Little Ice Age."

           "If we are right, this could be the last solar maximum we'll see for a few decades. That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth's climate," said Hill.

           Solar flares and eruptions can send highly charged particles hurtling toward Earth and interfere with satellite communications, GPS systems and even airline controls.

           Geomagnetic forces have been known to occasionally garble the world's modern gadgetry, and warnings were issued as recently as last week when a moderate solar flare sent a coronal mass ejection in the Earth's direction.

           The temperature change associated with any reduction in sunspot activity would likely be minimal and may not be enough to offset the impact of greenhouse gases on global warming, according to scientists who have published recent papers on the topic.
"Recent solar 11-year cycles are associated empirically with changes in global surface temperature of 0.1 Celsius," said Judith Lean, a solar physicist with the US Naval Research Laboratory.

           If the cycle were to stop or slow down, the small fluctuation in temperature would do the same, eliminating the slightly cooler effect of a solar minimum compared to the warmer solar maximum. The phenomenon was witnessed during the descending phase of the last solar cycle.

           This "cancelled part of the greenhouse gas warming of the period 2000-2008, causing the net global surface temperature to remain approximately flat -- and leading to the big debate of why the Earth hadn't (been) warming in the past decade," Lean, who was not involved in the three studies presented, said in an email to AFP.

           A study in the March 2010 issue of Geophysical Research Letters explored what effect an extended solar minimum might have, and found no more than a 0.3 Celsius dip by 2100 compared to normal solar fluctuations.

           "A new Maunder-type solar activity minimum cannot offset the global warming caused by human greenhouse gas emissions," wrote authors Georg Feulner and Stefan Rahmstorf, noting that forecasts by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have found a range of 3.7 Celsius to 4.5 Celsius rise by this century's end compared to the latter half of the 20th century.

           "Moreover, any offset of global warming due to a grand minimum of solar activity would be merely a temporary effect, since the distinct solar minima during the last millennium typically lasted for only several decades or a century at most."

Caution: This entry may contain too much personal information but what the heck, right?

I was out of feminine wash so I went for a trip to Rustan's Ayala Cebu to buy one. To my dismay, they didn't have Lactacyd on stock. Since we're at this, I have not seen Carefee feminine wash for some time now. It made me wonder if they had stopped selling it.

I'm not really a fan of PH Care feminine wash nor GynePro, I picked this Palmolive Tahiti instead (and honestly, it's more of curiosity that I picked this one than me being not a fan of PH Care / GenyPro).

The packaging does not say anything in English but then of course "Douche" does suggest cleaning of the vagina. What's puzzling is that, the packaging does not look like anything that has to do with "douching" at all. Oh well, I thought I'd give it a shot since it was displayed in between the pantyliners and other feminine wash.

I searched for the product information and hoping they have it all in English. To my surprise, "douche" is actually a german word for shower. This product is definitely not a feminine wash but a shower gel :D

Well, I'm taking the trip back to the Rustan's tomorrow to return this product.

I've been lost for the last couple of days; I've been crying, I've been sad. There are reasons I could not easily divulge under any circumstance - no matter how much I'm dying to tell you what has been bothering me. In times like this, I seek silence, solitude (or solitudine if that's the proper word for that instead).

Nike Plus Challenge

          It has always been a struggle for me to lose weight knowing that the "big" genes run in the family. I also have troubles staying away from sweets --- I just can't get enough of them. Somehow, I have slowly managed to cut the sweets a bit, from large servings to medium servings and I am on my way to small servings to seldom.

          A month ago, my friends and I went for a week-trip to the beautiful Boracay. The three of them considered themselves "fat", nevertheless they have been on strict diet and regular exercise for two months. There I was, the big one from the group.

          It doomed me all of the sudden when a guy told me I'm fat. So here I am, challenged. I am honestly working hard to trim down. Thanks to the nikeplus.com for the inspiration.

I don't really go for the "PRO" challenges where people really aim X miles a week or X miles/hr. I'm just starting and I like joining challenges where I can just fit into the crowd.

I do have goals set for myself (not the goals that would strain my muscles.) I'll keep you posted! :D

So I gave myself a little thinking. The past few days had been a mess. Seriously, who wants to be in my shoes? Of course, there's no easy way to get past this.

I remember the night I walked away. That was on the 7th of June. I was wearing pink and had a walk along the dark roads of IT park alone. He picked me up and drove me home. I didn't talk - I simply answered yes or no. I gave myself a few minutes to settle down and waited for him to utter some more words. Minutes passed and that didn't happen. I walked my way out and never looked back.

I do not want him back. I never wanted him back. I just wanted a talk - the very thing I needed. Cliche, it is.

Months passed, his promise still unfulfilled --- to finally come to me upfront and tell me exactly how, what and why it all happened.

I do not regret what I did. The severity of my actions depended on his. I gave him more than enough time to explain himself to me.

Fast track to the present time, I have been humiliated in public twice already but am not affected at all.

Just so you know:

I am a woman of words. I do as I say and so should you.

Never threaten me with actions. I can do worse.

I do not talk often as I prefer to think. I give warnings, too. In this case, never provoke me.

Lastly, you can call me anything that pleases you and I'll do exactly I am called to prove you right.

Let It Be Known Once and For All

I kept my calm the last couple of months, leaving it to fate what comes the day after. For the last couple of months, I slept with anger in my heart.

I did not come to you because I respect the fact that you were my friend's superior and we have several friends in common and that I had nothing against you. I did not want you to be part of the argument. I reached out to ****** for an explanation: why all of us at the same time.

He came to me around november of last year, giving me hints of interest and was persistent about it. I paid no attention to him because I wasn't into office romance. Until, he finally got me. He never made mention of you.

I lost my trust on the man I had learned to care about. He walked away without a word. A friend of mine was kind enough to tell me what he had been telling everybody (including you, I suppose). He had told everyone the exact opposite of what happened. I still have all his texts, emails and chat transcripts that would prove otherwise.

You see, I let it all boil down until I was too bothered last night (unholy hours) that his phone kept on beeping for a couple of hours - straight.

I read the texts all --- all of those which seemed very familiar, the exact same texts he sent me months ago, a dejavu except that this time, those texts went to different women. I am definitely certain of a woman named Juvelyn UV and a woman named A_sun, who they call each other “by". I'm not certain whether there are still others but I am with full certainty about those two women.

He told me those texts were from you. One thing is for sure, you don’t go to school and you are not in a pageant. He then changed his thoughts later on claiming those texts were just questions. Oh well, I don’t consider “I miss you”s as a query. I dared him to show the texts to me again, he did not. I asked him several times about them, he did not answer.

I let it pass one time with you. This time, I cannot. I was hurt and I had passed through it. A_sun is hurting, too, I can tell. And soon, you will be.

Despite protests from friends that I should not reach out to you, I am emailing you this time. You deserve to know all these things and I trust you with your judgment.

It’s been a while since I wrote something that is straight from my heart. I have thought of this for quite a while and I believe it’s time to reflect on things that I do not discuss so often with anybody. Nevertheless, I wrote and rewrote, flicked and browsed through the pages of my memory, hoping I’d come up with something more sensible than “I’m smart and sexy”.

—I can be as loyal as a dog. I’ll tuck you in when you go to sleep and steal kisses from you while you’re looking away. I’ll be your bestfriend and lover.

—”The way to a man’s heart is through the stomach”. Sure thing, it is. I may not be a good cook or I may never learn how to cook you your favorite food but I sure will help you put food on the table – be it coming from a paper bag or a zip lock, I’ll make sure we’ll never sleep on empty stomaches.

—Forgive us for our nature of being innate naggers. It’s our way of compensating our strength against yours. I am a woman with strong opinions and I do speak my mind. I sometimes do not regret what I say, I say things straight from my mind. I’ll sleep on my anger and we shall wake up with sunshine on our faces and laugh about our past arguments. I’ll stick with you through thick and thin and I will be on your side while you way your options.
