It's here, it's here! After much collaboration and work with my graphic designer I am excited to announce the launch of the new Crazy Good Designs site. When I started Crazy Good Designs a year ago I set it up with Blogger and used one of their simple templets. When I decided to update my Kayte Designs site I thought it was a perfect opportunity to give my blog a more professional and personalized look. The graphics on my new blog have become an extension of the Kayte Designs site- that's also why I changed the name from Crazy Good Design to Designs. On Monday I will have made the switch to CrazyGoodDesigns.com, woo-hoo! The new site represents my style a lot better and should be a lot easier for readers to remember. No more dot-blogspot-dot-com and I decided it was a good time to change Crazy Good Design to Crazy Good Designs- adding the S gives the title consistency with Kayte Designs. Please make sure you add the new site to your blog roll, Google Reader, SSR, etc.

PUMPKIN TIME!

Happy Halloween people! Fall weather is definitely in the air today. It's hard to believe that a few days ago I was swimming in Florida- now I'm bundled up at my computer burning a pumpkin spice candle. Tonight I am having some friends over for drinks and to see all the cute little Trick-or-Treaters. This year David and I are dressing up as Dexter and Deborah Morgan from the Showtime show Dexter. As promised, I got some pictures of my easy to make Fall centerpiece. I got these cute mini gourds and white pumpkins from Walmart and I stacked them with corks in a pitcher and cheapie vase. Done and done. I've been hanging on to all of our wine corks for a while so I can make garland for my "Wine Theme" Christmas Tree this year, tell then they have a new home on our dining room table.

Today I spy creepy black things. With Halloween around the corner I pulled together some mischievous black items from high end furniture to dramatic little accessories. The Havet Chest is really cool, the carved texture looks like something been clawing away at the surface to get into it and the Smoke Chandelier by Moooi has been burnt to a crisp to achieve that cracked texture and broken off limb. All so very evil and decadent!

SAVANNAH AND AMELIA ROAD TRIP

Hey everyone, I'm writing this post from the road today. Last nigh David and I spent the night in a great hotel, The Bohemian, in Savannah, Georgia and we visited my friends fabric shop. I got some great photos of both that I'll share when I get to my computer. Now we are on our way to Amelia Island, Florida to see the progress on an amazing house I helped design and to take some physical measurements for a painting I'm about to start. I look forward to sharing more on my trip soon and I hope you're all having a good start to the week!

YO! HOME

This new concept YO! Home, it's a really smart and sexy way to address the way we live in small urban spaces. The Founder of YO! Company, Simon Woodroffe, is probably best know for his projects YO! Sushi and Yotel. His latest project is this Transformer-style apartment that clearly takes inspiration from nautical design and contemporary kitchen design. He believes that this is the way we will live in the future. In this prototype there are 12 moving parts; including a sliding wall, pop out kitchen, elevating bed and transformable guest bed. The 860 square feet apartment feels more like a full scale penthouse than a one bedroom studio. You have to check out the video above to see all the secret compartments and moving parts!

Above is the "elevator" bedroom and sunken lounge, this bed is raised and lowered with a motor but is also on a counter weight so it is possible to raise and lower by hand. The steps leading to the sunken lounge has secret kick panel drawers (perfect for stashing a corkscrew and wine glasses) and the cocktail table has a raisable surface that would make a great TV tray or work surface. Below you see both options used as a theater space with a dark color drapery wall and slide down projector screen.

This raisable section in the photo above has enough bar and wine storage for a full party and the sunken dining table below comfortably seats 4.

In this picture above you can see the outlines on the floor of the nautical-esque pop ups, including the bar, the dining table and printing station on the far left. Below you see the revealed kitchen including a roll out island and stools on the far right.

The office space consists of a vibrant ocean blue wide desk with storage on the right and a raisable printing station. It can also be folded flush to the wall or transformed into a guest bed. A semi-sheer sliding screen wall gives this nook some privacy for the home owner and guest while letting natural light from the windows shine through.

The last multi-use feature is the shower; the Asian-style teak flooring will slide open to create a small soaking tub below. Another feature that they are planing on incorporating in the future is overhead storage. Drop down compartments that look like a flush ceiling when closed will offer the one thing every small living space is lacking- more storage! Simon Woodroffe believes that this model unit will inspire a new way of living and that one day single family homes will be a thing of the past. So are you ready to downsize?

SPOTLIGHT ON: KIRSTIN OVERBECK'S CANDY

Well with Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to show you guys this extra-sweet candy inspired line. The Candy Collection furniture line by Kirstin Overbeck was first introduced at Milan Design Week at an exhibition from the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein Halle. These sugary pastel colors and whimsical forms are so precious and creative! The collection consists of three legged stools, rugs, hooks, and one knock-out candy necklace light fixture.
She discribes her collection as " The tasty and colorful world of sweets and delicious goodies served as inspiration for the Candy Collection. I wanted to design products reminiscing enthusiasms of childhood, especially the irresistible savor of sugar. The result is an eye candy, a visual feast for the senses... Savory products with zero calories guaranteed!" I must agree.

10 COOL TRASH CANS

Everybody has garbage and everybody needs to put is somewhere. It makes perfect sense to want to hide your trash can or buy something that disappears into it's surroundings. BUT, a wastebasket can also be a design opportunity. I have a very narrow galley kitchen with limited counter space and almost no wall space due to how many cabinets and windows there are. For situations like this I say take advantage of any opportunity to pop in some personality, same goes for little powder rooms or under desk waste bins.

DINNER AT THE SPENCE

Hello everyone, hope you had a good weekend. I went to The Spence for the first time last night for a family birthday dinner. We had a great time, the food was innovative and the desserts were ridiculous. The restaurant decor was right up my ally. The first thing I noticed was the glowing ball light fixture, it looks like massive buoys caught in a fishing net. I love the colors and furniture choices, especially the Eames style molded plastic stools. The unique aspect of this space is the very open bar and kitchen. Both stations are built as a part of the dining room. The kitchen prep line is built to look like a free standing kitchen island and a large chefs table faces the action. The bar is actually just a double sided counter for the bartenders with two bar height communal tables flanking it. It's a very unusual concept and I imagine it makes the bar goers feel like they are hanging out in someones swanky kitchen. Both of these stations have floating shelves above them to highlight them. FINISHED FRONT PORCH

Remember this? A while back I pulled together a fresh new look for my front porch and wrote about it here. We did some mild landscaping on our front yard late this summer and it motivated us to spend more time out front. Yesterday I picked up a pretty mum so I thought I would photograph the whole thing for you. It's also nice to see my new drapery panels from the outside. I was able to catch the two planters on sale at West Elm and I already owned the owl and lanterns; so the planters, table, chairs, rug and pillows came to $355. A great investment for a new place to hang out, have some wine and play with the dogs.

NOVOGRATZ INVADE CB2

Snooping around online today led me to a fantastic discovery, The Novogratz family has created an exclusive line for CB2! I fell in love with Courtney and Rob Novogratz on their Bravo show 9 By Design. The show followed the Manhattan based interior design couple, along with their 7 kids ranging from age 3 to 15- all of which are way cooler than me. Since then the duo has written a couple books and stared in another show Home By Novogratz. Their design esthetic is "downtown chic", vibrant and livable. They use a lot of unique and original art, vintage finds and crazy statement pieces. This is definitely reflected in their new home line.

I think everything they've created is beautiful and true to their style. My absolute favorite is the light box letters that spells out family. They show it oriented both vertical (as seen above) and horizontal (below). You can also pick up their latest book Home By Novogratz at CB2.

One last item I wanted to single out is this hand-tufted wool rug. At first I didn't think it was that special but then I read the description. The image of this scripted alphabet came from Rob's father. It was written in the 1950's when his father was in school (back in a time when cursive was a needed skill). They highlighted the N for Novogratz with a pop of color. See it all at CB2.

PROJECTS AT HOME

So sorry I haven't been around this week. I've been spending my extra time working on some house projects with David. I'm still recovering from my car accident and dealing with physical therapy so my mood has been in a kind of funk. A great way to feel better is to be in a comfortable surrounding. I think anyone can agree that you feel better if you come home to a clean house after a bad day, well the same goes with redecorating with me. I'm not talking about going out and buying a new oriental rug, just some sprucing up and re-arranging. I started with a fall table arrangement that I'll share that later because currently my office has migrated to the dining table and my pretty arrangement is sitting on the floor! I've done some long over due framing of artwork for my bedroom and master bath, and I have plans to do some bedroom wall painting.

The project that kept me up late last night is my new living room drapery. When making home improvements in a rental you really need to weigh your options. Do you want to invest in something custom if you may only be there for a few years? You can't spend money on things like paint, lighting fixtures, landscaping and drapery with the justification "it adds value to my property". You have to keep in mind that you are only making purchases for your comfort and enjoyment. With that being said, I try to stay away from custom features that would have no use to me if we moved, with the exception of painting. Our front windows are large and they are not standard. Up until yesterday we had cheap-o plastic blinds that our landlord installed. They're great because they give us multiple levels of privacy (which is really important to me) but they sure are ugly! We went with an Ikea system for it's price, versatility and the fact that we can customize it for this space but easily take it apart and re-work it in the future.

The bottom layer of the three layer system are simple white semi-sheer panels. I picked this because I want the option for full privacy during the day without blocking the sunlight with a heavy drapery. Our house is at street level and I like to know that if I'm stomping around in my PJ's the mailman isn't staring at me. The second layer is made of grey loose-woven panels. This layer adds some visual interest and texture. Plus, it's a perfect compromise for my privacy needs and David getting to enjoy the scenery outside. We doubled up on this layer so we can adjust the amount of transparency.

The final layer is the thick purple drapery panels. This part I'm still iffy on- I love the idea of fabric to frame the window and to hide the other layers when I want the window open. I plan on keeping these fixed open but there is a chance I will end up changing the fabric. You should never be afraid to make some returns when decorating. When buying accessories and textiles I sometimes over buy so I have room for adjustments- just make sure you ask about the return policy. I haven't properly hung the purple drapes, or hemmed them because I'm going to take some time to live with it. Check it out during different times of day and with different levels of lighting. All-in-all the system cost $233 before tax and like I said before, it can be reworked, moved, shortened and added to. Check out a couple different levels of layers below.

More projects coming soon, including the final look of our front deck, pillow upgrades and my master bedroom makeover. Paint is the quickest and cheapest way to change the look of a room. Here's a sneak peak of the direction I'm planning on going.

MARRIAGE BLISS

Today is mine and David's 3 year anniversary! We've made plans to head down to Savannah and Amelia Island to celebrate our anniversary in a couple weeks for some true R & R and the last of the summer sun. Until then, we're going to have a nice romantic dinner at Antica Posta, where we had our first date about 6 and 1/2 years ago.

SO speaking of romantic dinners, I thought I would share some of my other favorites in Atlanta. Antica Posta holds a very special place in my heart. It's small and quaint and the Italian native Chef/owner does a great job with the food and wine. About a block down is another one of my favorite romantic spots Aria. I love Johnson Studio's decor, the stark black and white look has aged very well and their art collection is pretty impressive. I like this place because it too is small and personal.

Now that David and I are proud Westsiders we have some new romantic spots close by. Miller Union is a great place for a celebratory dinner, or if you just want to get dressed up and have a good cocktail- I love, love, love the tiny bar. Grab a couple classic drinks, the pork belly appetizer and most important- the Farm Baked Egg in Celery Cream!

Another great romantic date on The Westside is a Westside Urban Market food tour. David and I love to talk about food and to try different things. If you park in the North lot of the Urban Market an hour before sunset you can walk to the JCT Bar and grab a seat outside. On the weekends they have live acoustic music playing and they have fans or heat lamps depending on the season. It's a great place to see the skyline and watch the sun go down. After some snacks and drinks you can walk across the train bridge and do some window shopping. The next stop is the bar at Abattoir; which is French for slaughterhouse. The setting is farm chic, like something Martha Stewart would have her hands on, and the bar staff is very knowledgeable. If you like beef jerky, I recommend taking a brown bag home with you. From there you have the option of walking around some more, heading to Ormsby's for some beer and bocci ball, grabbing a bottle of wine from Perrine's Wine to take home or stopping into Yoforia for a frozen yogurt dessert.

BRAND SPANKING NEW KAYTE DESIGNS SITE!

I am so excited to be launching my new Kayte Designs website today! I have been working with graphic designer and web developer Jeff Corey for a few months now on rebranding Kayte Designs and and improving both my business site and my blog. The blog will be ready to launch in a couple weeks and I will be changing the domain to crazygooddesigns.com, but first comes the new and improved kaytedesigns.com. The new KD logo was created with a pattern that I always doodle while I'm brainstorming. I like the mix of a hand drawn pattern and a fat, bold typeface. I've worked with Jeff Corey on a few of my commercial projects, he created the logo and branding for 5th Street Cafe, Escorpion and he did the wall graphics for Scenario. I knew that if I gave him a bunch of links to sites I like he would be able to help me pin-point the exact look I need for my web site. It's similar to what I can do if a client who shows me pages from books and magazines- I can analyze what the images have in common and what the basic theme is through out. Jeff and I worked on creating a simple gallery style site that is an elegant background for my photographs. I think the site is easy to navigate and rich with content. Below are some images of the key features and changes.

Not only did Jeff help me get my site visually pleasing, we also added some much needed features like ways to connect via social media and live feeds from Twitter, Instagram and and Pinterest accounts.

The new site operates through Wordpress, I am so happy with how easy it is to add to my portfolio and the News feed. I created the old Kayte Designs site through iWeb and I felt like it was always giving me problems. I set up the Portfolio section to work like a blog so I could add work to it often but it was such a nightmare to operate that I eventually stopped adding to it. The back end of this Wordpress site is so simple and it looks 100 times better! Make sure you check out my new site at Kaytedesigns.com and check back soon for the new Crazy Good Designs site.

OCTOBER OBSESSIONS

October is a extra special month for me, it's my favorite. I love the weather, football and Halloween. It's my husband's favorite time of year too, that's why we got married on October 4th three years ago. I look forward to celebrating our anniversary this month and I am also looking forward to launching my two new sites for Kayte Designs and Crazy Good Designs (more on that coming soon). I'm starting this fantastic month off with a few things that I am totally obsessed with right now. As I've mentioned a few time, we can look forward to a lot of deep, royal colors this fall. I love this navy blue nail polish in a matte finish by OPI. I also encourage you to check out the Drawing Study bench on Anthropologie's site; there's a variety of one-of-a-kind benches designed by Leslie Oschmann. The legs are repurposed from antique stools and the wood bench top is beautifully collaged with original sketches and remnants of Oschmann's old works. Obsessed!

SPOTLIGHT ON: WSAKE

I love this company's story, WSAKE is a father-daughter run company in Regensburg, Germany. They design jewelry and beautiful little plant accessories. The father Waldemar Artmann has been a silversmith for over 50 years and he creates all his designs by hand. His daughter became a graphic designer and jewelry designer in 2009. With Waldemar's extensive experience and his daughter's fresh eyes, they've been creating beautiful and delicate works of art. I especially love their Plant Jewels; a collection of handmade spikes that add a bit of glitz and personality to your potted plants or bouquettes. They are made out of silver, copper and brass with unique materials like ostrich egg shell, porcupine needles, wild hog tooth, mountain crystals, pebbles, amethyst and more. They are so unusual and beautiful, I especially love the porcupine needles!

WSAKE also makes a product called the Can Vase. It's a brass vase with interchangeable tops that help shape your flower arrangement. It comes in two different sizes and you can order the caps individually.

You should definitely make a stop at WSAKE's website to see their full collection of jewelry. I singled out a few of my favorites below. Their style is very simple and minimal, making them a perfect source for everyday pieces.

I recently bought my first big girl camera so I could take a shot at photographing my own portfolio images. I got an Olympus SLR, along with a bad ass wide-angle lens for interior photos. Today I had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the season and it's got me in a Fall kind of mood. Fall is my favorite season; I love sweaters, boots, scarves and PLAID. This year the big colors for Fall and Winter are going to be jew tones- think Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, and Topaz. HER IMAGINARY FLORAL OFFICE

This week I created a home office for the girl in this picture below. I like that her style is feminine with a bit of edge and sass. The outfit looks casual and put together, the tailored shirt is softened by the girly floral pattern and the whole look is dressed up by the addition of the black leather clutch. I think that this girl is a hard worker, living in a metropolitan area- maybe a magazine editor or a journalist. I wanted to create an office for her, something that would represent her as a fearless, creative female business person. I gave her a bold palette based on her outfit; the furniture is a mix of timeless classics and high end contemporary pieces. The office represents her with feminine style, bold colors and modern designs.

FARM CHIC WEDDING

Last weekend I went to my best friends wedding in Kentuky. It was so beautiful, unique and romantic. The couple, Drew and Kelly, are both artists and Kelly is also an interior designer. With all that talent, along with the help of two crafty families, they dove in head first with DIY projects to make this wedding original and personal. The ceremony was held outside a huge red barn with corn fields and llamas in the background. The couple was married under the umbrella of a big tree. They hung a chandelier from a branch to create a backdrop and the seats curved in a semi-circle facing the trunk. The grooms men wore bow ties and suspenders and the bridesmaids picked their own dresses in different shade of nude. The bride wore a beautiful fitted gown with customized touches like a handmade sash and cap sleeves. The reception was inside the barn, under twinkling lights and vintage chandeliers. The groom painted an American Gothic inspired portrait and asked their guests to sign the matte board. Instead of place cards at the door, they filled a farm cart with mini canvases and easels with handwritten name tags; on each table there were painting supplies for us to play with. They danced to a sweet and slow live version of "Home" by Edward Sharp and The Magnetic Zeros. The whole night was magical and I'm so impressed with all the handmade details that contributed to look and feel of the event.

Kelly and Drew let me contribute to the look of the wedding as well. I made the garland you see below out of fabric scraps, lace and white Christmas lights. I also got to make all the flower arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres. Kelly wanted the flowers to be soft and natural, like something you'd pick from a garden. I had so much fun chipping in and I can't wait to see the professional pictures!

Lightboys is a company that makes large scale, quality LED backlit photographs. The company was created by Designer and Craftsman, Jirko Bannas, and Creative Director and photo-book publisher, Oliver Seltmann. They are based out of Hamburg, Germany and the photographs from their online gallery are from Internationally known photographers.
I looked into Lightboys for a project once, I think their product Polaboy is so freaking cool and versatile. You can choose from their online photo gallery full of beautiful professional photos that have an eerie vintage vibe going on or you can send in your own Polaroid. I was plesantly surprised with their prices for custom piece (to get pricing information contact Lightboys via email). I think this would be a great way to add some ambient lighting to a large space, it would be a creative way to share a family photo or a wedding picture. I could see one above my fireplace!

Another product by Lightboys is the Lightwall. By using the highest quality of LED light panels and photography enlargement, Lightboys are able to create this flat and evenly lit photo panel. I would love to use this product in a bar or retail space!
