You keep me strung out on your new junk.

API Freak-outs.

2011-06-08T14:01:00.000-07:00

The more and more we use services that other people develop you will notice freak outs anytime one popular company decides to change one part of their API. Everyone that depends on your API needs to run around and change the way their code works with the API.

Apple decided to use Twitter as a single sign on service of iOS. This raises a huge question about API lock in for both company.

Internet birthplace to be preserved for future generations

2011-04-12T14:11:00.000-07:00

Internet birthplace to be preserved for future generations: "

This is the room where the Internet was born, 3420 Boelter Hall at the University of California, Los Angeles.

This is the same room, 42 years later. Until recently, nobody knew exactly which room had housed the lab where the first ARPANET message was sent. But, now that it's been pinpointed as 3420 Boelter, there's work underway to restore the room to its 1969 appearance, and preserve it as a historic site. The Kleinrock Internet Heritage Site and Archive opens June 1st. The lower photo was taken during a pre-opening tour led by Paleofuture blogger, Matt Novak.

Too Many Chefs....

2011-04-12T14:02:00.001-07:00

You have heard the term: there is too many chefs in the kitchen. These last two weeks has been an exercise in information exchange, some of the wrong ways and some of the right.

I think one thing is for sure, I need to be more involved on the front end of each project than I have in the past.

a week looking back

2011-01-30T12:39:00.001-08:00

So this was the week that we went live with our first store. Our site has been sitting on the server for a few months. We let it just sit there as we were waiting for product to ship to Amazon for warehousing.

One the product was received at Amazon we pushed our product live to our EBay store and started pumping stuff about it in Facebook.

The orders were one a day then two a day, now in the first week we are running of curtain products. A good thing for sure.

Our warehouse in the cloud

2011-01-26T13:45:00.001-08:00

The cloud: it seems to be one of those buzzwords that people want for their business, yet they don't seem to completely understand what you can move to the cloud and what you can not.

One of the first onsite services that a business can offload to a third party provider. Some business will jump to a hosted solution they are familiar with, most of the time a hosted exchange system.

We have been hosting our websites because hosting it in house is just costly and who can provide the uptime that I data center can.

Can I move physical products like my warehouse filled with motorcycle parts? Of course you can. Using Amazon Fulfillment for warehouse in the cloud suddenly move physical inventory takes on a new model. With our products leaving the manufacture and going directly to Amazon, suddenly I don't need a physical building, I don't need a person to process the shipment.

This brings the E concept to a closed loop. My E Store truly becomes a "push a button to ship" process.

Report: USA tops when it comes to cyber-combat

2011-01-25T15:17:00.000-08:00

Report: USA tops when it comes to cyber-combat: "

A survey of cyberspace says that the United States enjoys the honor of being the world's "top attack traffic source," accounting for 12 percent of all such malicious data—eight percent of the globe's in the third quarter of 2010.

This could represent the activities of 'infected hosts that are looking for other hosts to spread to, or it may represent brute force attempts to log in to other systems,' according to the Akamai Corporation's David Belson. It's all in the server maker's latest State of the Internet report (registration required).

3G is not 3G it’s Dial Up

2011-01-21T12:55:00.001-08:00

Well I am spending the week with out DSL. Which means I am leaning on my iPhone 4 for most of my needs. I can pretty much do most things I need to do for server con-figs from my phone. The only issue I am having is uploading a file in the browser from my phone.

I am using USB Drive app to get files from my PC to my phone so that I can send out invoices. That is simple, it’s just uploading a file that I need to figure out.

You might ask, well why don’t you just tether your iPhone to your computer. Well here at my desk the coverage is very spotty. My iPhone sits and bounces from 3G to Edge and then back again. That gets me no where, not to mention that I would go over my 2GB cap in the first ten minutes.

Hopefully the modem will show up tomorrow and I will not be waiting until Friday for delivery.

Another Hosted Emails Post

2010-12-07T17:56:00.001-08:00

So most people know that I rave about using Google for Hosted Domains Email system.

Here is another reason I love them so:

When you are moving a site from one server to another, you often have to take into account the users email that is associated with the domain. When you are hosted with the GOOG you leave all those MX records alone because you are pointing all your mail to them.

This just makes things a breeze when moving a client from a testing phase to a live phase or when upgrading servers.

Database Issues on Main Server

2010-12-06T23:14:00.000-08:00

We are currently having an issue with our main server were sites with hosted x-carts are currently un-reachable.

All Data is safe as we are currently just unable to route to them.

I will post a message when this issue has cleared.

Real-time + Face Time = the New Primetime

2010-11-21T01:22:00.000-08:00

Real-time + Face Time = the New Primetime: "

from Steve Ruble's Blog

Real-time + Face Time = the New Primetime

One of the realities of the modern era and the age of continuous information streams is that consumers now expect, rather than simply demand, that their needs be addressed in real time. One of my former colleagues summed this up best by calling the phenomenon 'The Baby Monitor Principle.'

The basic premise is that once an infant knows a baby monitor is in a room and comprehends what it does, he/she begins to use it to their advantage. Babies somehow understand that when they cry, mom or dad will come running to save the day. So they cry some more.

In the digital space, a similar metaphor rings true. Savvy consumers now are well aware that companies are listening in to their conversations on Twitter and Facebook. And some are using it to their advantage. They know that if they're vocal enough and find a community of like minded individuals, brands will eventually have to cater to their needs. Business has evolved by establishing robust digital embassies on platforms like Twitter.

It's not just social media, however, that's encouraging companies to live a far more dynamic existence than they're accustomed to. In many ways, it's also the new mobile services, some social, that are arming consumers with essential real-time information. and changing our behaviors and expectations.

Consider Red Laser, a popular iPhone application that is owned by eBay (an Edelman client). Red Laser gives consumers the ability to scan bar codes to find cheaper prices. There are countless other apps available for all platforms. As tools like Red Laser become more popular, it's conceivable that retailers will have to empower their personnel at the point of sale to be more nimble in approving just-in-time pricing.

Not sitting on their laurels, retailers are already wisely responding to such empowered consumers by dangling equally attractive alternatives. Macy's, Sports Authority and Best Buy (also an Edelman client), for example, all are aggressively promoting ShopKick. This new platform rewards customers with savings and rewards for using their phones when they are physically in a store or shopping mall.

However, the war doesn't end there. This may end up a game of whack-a-mole as new real-time services continually emerge.

One such technology is LucyPhone, a web site that lets you bypass one of the joys of life - waiting on hold for customer service. Simply dial a consumer 1-800 hotline via LucyPhone, then disconnect the call once you're placed into the holding carousel and they will dial you back once a real human joins the call.

Lastly there's Google Instant - a controversial new offering from the search giant that alters your results in real-time with every letter you type. This immediate feedback mechanism is sure to alter search behaviors over time, forcing marketers to constantly look at how they pivot their content and ads.

Queen Rania of Jordan once said that 'real time is the new primetime.' And she's right. Business must aspire to operate in real-time, or come as close to it as they possibly can. However, this is just the beginning. Enter face time.

Despite all of the wonders of the modern age that we live in, technology has not diminished the need for human interaction. We still like to see who we're talking to and how they physically react to our questions and concerns.

The coming years will usher in a gaggle of new devices that bring face-to-face communication to our pockets and bring back in vogue. Apple's FaceTime, for example, is a new video communication standard that the company is looking to make available across a number of devices.

The moral of the story here is that every business today must try to catch up to consumers by becoming one that loves living in real time. At the same time, organizations also need to being to stay one step ahead of their customers by leveraging emerging face-to-face technologies before others do.

This two-fisted combo - real-time plus face-time - is the new primetime.

Google Voice = Unified Messaging

2010-11-18T20:57:00.001-08:00

In the last few days Google has released Google Voice for Hosted Domain email accounts. You know, the Gmail but with your business name.

My Setup: I have a Google Voice Number that is on my business card and public. I have my cell phone, with it’s own number, and it’s voice mail being intercepted by Google Voice. I also have all my contacts in my iPhone syncing to my contacts for my hosted email, which is the same contacts for Google Voice. I treat the Public Google Voice number as a tech support line for GTD. Here is where the cool part comes in; because I have my contacts integrated, I can set up custom outgoing messages for each person in my iPhone/Google Contacts. If you are not in my contacts you get the standard tech support greeting, but let’s say if my mom calls my cell phone and gets voice mail, she gets the “hi mom, I will call you right back, love you” message.

If the call come from my cell phone or direct from the Google Voice number, I will be able to listen in on the caller leaving a message, and pick up. In effect pulling the call back or let it go and finish in voicemail.

Unified messaging has long been the desire for most of us. Having all my calls listed in an inbox like structure makes managing everything a snap.

Thanks Google

Very excited about having Champ Factory as a new client. With Sebastien Tortelli giving Gavin Trippe Designs the opportunity to rebrand his online presence, gives us the chance to step into the Racer arena and throw down some code. We are very honored to have him as a client.

Tortelli began his early career in Europe on the Grand Prix motocross racing circuit. He made his winning debut in 1993 when he won the 1996 125cc FIM World Motocross Championship. In 1998, he took the title in Greece as the 250cc World Champion and in 1999, he was sponsored by Team Honda when he claimed the 250cc National in San Bernardino, California.
