Tagasi Haral // Back in Hara

Hara allveelaevade demagneetimise sadam. Esimest ja kuni laupäevani ainsat korda käisin Haral umbes-täpselt 3 aastat tagasi. Toonasest korrast näeb pilte siin. Paraku panin siis postitustesse 1000px laiusega fotosid, seega osadel monitoridel võivad pildid udused olla, kuigi tegelikult oli kvaliteet hea. Sutike kahju, et seekord sai Hara külastatud keskpäeval, kui valgus on keeruline ja varjud teravad, kuid midagi näitamiseks postitada siiski ehk on. Kas või võrdluse mõttes, sest muutunud on omajagu. Näiteks see, et vähemalt päevasel ajal on seal nüüd sissepääs tasuline - 5 euri nägu. Kas õhtul saaks ilma läbi, ei oskagi öelda. Tundub, et piirkonda arendatakse ja lähedusse on tekkimas ka väike camping. Sadamaala on kõvasti muutunud; mitmed raudbetoonkolakad on kadunud, kail kasvanud puuhakatised välja juuritud, osad ohtlikumad augud märgistatud või kaetud ja tundub, et ka mõned ehitised on lagunenud/lammutatud. Rääkimata siis graffitist, mida on tulnud juurde ja muist vanast on pragunemas/hääbumas.
Lisaks oli sadamas vana laev, kuhu sai sisse ronima minna. Kailt (kus on ainus ligipääs) keelavaid silte näha polnud, kuid teisel pool laeva olid siiski hoiatused, et laevas ronida ei tohi. Soovitan elamuse mõttes. Turvalisus mõttes ei soovita.

The legendary harbor of Hara for demagnetizing submarines. It has been approximately 3 years since my first and - until Saturday - last visit to Hara. You can see photos from that time here. Back then I regrettably posted photos only 1000px wide, so on some monitors they can look blurry although the original quality was good. I'm a bit miffed about the lighting this time, I just don't like mid-day Sun - way too harsh shadows and bright light (as I'm sure I've mentioned here before), but I figured these shots might still be interesting to look at. Even just for comparison's sake...because the place sure has transformed in three years. For instance there is now an entry fee of 5 euros per face, the harbor was actually looking much better, many huge concrete blocks were gone (well, obviously I liked them, abandoned aesthetic ftw) and they're developing a small camping area as well. In addition to that, some dangerous holes in the harbor structure were covered or marked, trees that were starting to grow on the pier had been cut, new graffiti had appeared and the old had faded.
There's also an old ship next to the dock and the doors were open. It turned out the warning signs were on the other side of the ship, so you wouldn't really know that entry to the ship was not prohibited.

10+ kuud // 10+ months

Niivõrd pikaks venivad need pausid postitustes. Selle ajaga siiski pilte natukene koguneb ja seetõttu panen siia viimase 10+ kuu jäädvustused. Eriti võõras on uude Bloggerisse tulla, mida seni postituse loomiseks veel kasutanud polnud. Loodetavasti jääb vana keskkond siiski kättesaadavaks, sest päris kõike harjumuspärast uues vaates enam teha ei õnnestunud.

Igatahes on siin nii suve kui talve kui varakevadet. Seda õiget kevadet veel mitte. Tavapärased plaanid, kus ja mis käia ja mida teha, on nüüd kõik muidugi kuskile sahtlisse lükatud. Eks näis, millal normaalsus taastub. Kui üldse...!

Naljakas, aga Peipsi järve ääres polnud ma elus kordagi käinud. Lugusid peipsi sibulast ja kalast ja kõigest muust toredast on kuulnud loomulikult kõik eestlased ning selle aasta suve lõpu #avastaeestit reisiks sai võetud ette sõit Peipsi äärde. Sai ostetud ka ehedat sibulat ja kala ning mõlemad maitsesid hää. Teel läbisime mitmeid väiksemaid külasid ja aleveid ning poleks uskunudki, et Peipsi ääres elu nii palju on. Eks ilmselt oma rolli selles mängib ka suvi, kuid sellegipoolest ei saa eitada, et inimesi ja tegutsemist oli näha rohkem kui oleks osanud arvata. Kindlasti tahaksin järgmisel aastal uuesti sinna minna ja Peipsi teisi nurgataguseid uudistada.

The gaps in between posts just keep getting longer and longer. But I still take photos and so this post contains captures from the last 10+ months. It was rather strange to write this in the new-ish Blogger interface. I hope that the old UI still remains available, because somehow the new one was limiting the features that I usually use.

Anyway here's everything from summer to winter to early spring. True spring with young leaves and fresh nature is missing. My usual plans and wants and dos have now been put on hold, as is the same for the whole world. I guess we'll see when (or should I say IF) everything is back to normal.

Curiously enough, I had never been to lake Peipus before. The area's home grown onions and fish from the lake is famous and known all over Estonia, so as a summer's ending #discoverestonia trip we decided to take a small ride to there. Onions and fish really were as delicious as promised. We passed many small villages on our way and for some reason I never would've thought that there would be so much life there. Yes, sure, some of it is because it was summer and people go there more, but still! It was a nice surprise to see the area thriving. I really wish to go back there next year to explore more of the surroundings of lake Peipus.

Minu toataimed // My house plants

Kolmas postitus seerias "mulle meeldib". Kui eelnevad jutud on olnud kelladest ja vinüülidest, siis nüüd on järg taimede käes. Spetsiifiliselt toataimede, sest suurem asi aiapidajat minust ei ole. Rõdul kasvavad till, petersell ja basiilik, aga sellega mu praegune rohenäpundus piirdub.
Iga pildi all on lähemalt juttu, millega tegemist ja kuidas ma nende eest hoolitsen.
Kuna iga taim on siiski erinev, siis tõmbasin telefoni Plant care reminder rakenduse. Saad oma taimedest pildi teha ning ära märkida, mitme päeva tagant ta kastmist/piserdamist/väetamist vajab. Lisaks on rakendusel ka talverežiim, mis laseb individuaalsed talvised kastmisgraafikud sisestada. Mugav vidin, kui detailid meeles ei püsi. Hoiab ära "kas ma teda 2 päeva tagasi just ei kastnud...?" kahtlused. Digi-nuti-iga asja jaoks äpp võib küll tunduda ideaalse lahendusena, kuid lõppkokkuvõttes tuleks kindlasti oma taimi jälgida ning otsuseid kastmise jm osas teha hetkeolukorrast lähtuvalt.
Ostupisik ei ole siiski vaibunud ja vahel on vaja poes huvipakkuvat taime tuvastada (tihtipeale ei ole nime kirjas). Seetõttu on kasulikuks osutunud ka Plantneti rakendus, mis taime pildi põhjal tuvastab. Täiuslik ta kindlasti ei ole (näiteks siinset esimest taime ta ei leidnud), aga abiks ikka.
Kes Redditi maailmaga kursis on, siis https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/ võib samuti ühel hetkel ära kuluda. Pildista või räägi oma murest ning kodused taimefanatid üritavad oma nõu jagada.
Sõbranna soovitusel sai tellitud ka mulla pH ja niiskustaseme mõõtmise vidin. Kui see viimaks postiga kohale jõuab, saan loodetavasti veel parema pildi, mis seisus taimed on või mida võivad lisaks vajada.

Third entry in the series of "Things I like". After previous posts about vinyl records and watches, it's now time to talk about plants. Specifically about house plants because I'm not much of a green thumb in the garden. I grow dill, parsley and basil on the balcony but that's as far as I go.
Under every photo there is a small description about the plant and how I take care of it.
Since every plant is different, I downloaded a Plant care reminder app to my phone. You can take photos of your plants and enter individual grooming plans (+ a winter schedule) about watering, spraying and fertilizing them. Such a handy thing when you can't remember the details when you last watered or took care of your plant. In the modern day and age of everything being smart and having an app for every single task, it seems like you can't go wrong with taking care of your plants...But in the end plants are living beings and sometimes act unpredictably, so you should definitely check the state of your plant before blindly trusting the app.
I'm still itching to buy more and sometimes I need to identify the plants in the store (if there is no description), and for that I got a Plantnet app. It's quite good, but not perfect because it failed to identify the first plant mentioned in this post.
For those familiar with the world of Reddit, there's https://reddit.com/r/plantclinic/. Take a photo of your troubled plant and describe the issue you're having, and other plant enthusiasts try and help you out.
As a recommendation by my friend, I ordered a device to measure the pH and the moisture level of the soil. I hope to have a better picture of the state and needs of my plants, when it finally arrives.

Tundmatu taim, mis saadud kingituseks. Olen proovinud otsida nii appide kui tavapärase Google'i abiga, aga päris õiget vastust polegi saanud. Mõned niivõrd-kuivõrd sarnased isendid on küll "kahtlusalused" (Peperomia), kuid osad detailid välisel vaatlusel ei ühti. Senimaani elab ja elutseb hästi ning on kõvasti kasvanud võrreldes ta esialgse suurusega. Naudib valgusküllast kasvukohta ja mõõdukat kastmist. Paraku ei tea, kas tegemist on ripptaimega või kasvab ta niisama laiustesse.

Unknown plant that I got as a gift. I've tried to identify it with apps and by doing the usual Google search but so far without any luck. I've found some results that look quite similar in pictures (Peperomia for instance), but some details seem a bit off. It seems to enjoy its location (lots of light) and my watering schedule, but I would still like to know how big it will grow or is it maybe even a hanging plant.

Curcuma
Ostetud suvel ja ilmselt pikka pidu selle lopsaka rohelisusega selleks hooajaks enam ei ole. Kurkumil on ilusad roosad õied ning ta juurt on Indias aastasadu kasutatud. Tegemist on talvituva taimega, mis augustis peaks oma lehed maha viskama ning seejärel on juur vaja panna pimedasse kohta kevadet ootama. Kuna ma seda protsessi pole veel läbi teinud, siis on paras ootusärevus, kas mu taim talve üle elab ja tuleval kevadel uuesti õide lööb.

I bought curcuma this summer and it's probably living its last month or two with luscious greenery. In full bloom it has beautiful pink blossoms and its root has been used in India for centuries. It's a hibernating plant, which means that in August it should lose all of its leaves and then you're supposed to put the root in a dark place. And in spring you should put it in soil again. We'll see, I haven't done this process before so it's all new to me. But I really do hope that I don't mess something up and it will blossom next year again.

Tillandsia xerographica
Ostetud Valgast sel suvel, õhutaim. Teoorias peaksid õhutaimed olema äärmiselt vastupidavad ja vähenõudlikud, kuid sellest hoolimata on 2 neist minu käe all siiski sussid püsti visanud. Esimene oli saadud kingituseks ning pidas vastu 2 aastat. Teine veetis väga suure osa oma elust vannitoas, mis aga siiski polnud kõige sobivam kasvukoht. Seega täiesti loodusliku valguseta kohta neid panna ei tasu.
Vett annan iga kahe nädala tagant.

Bought in Valga this summer, air plant. In theory, air plants should be very resilient and not demanding but despite that 2 of them have managed to die anyway. The first one was a gift and was good for 2 years. The other one spent the majority of its life in the bathroom which turned out not to be the best location for it. From my unfortunate experience, I wouldn't put air plants into a room without any natural light.
I water it every two weeks.

Calathea Crocata (kollane tiigerlehik) + Calathea Rufibarba
Mu absoluutsed lemmikud. Crocata (tagumine) oli esimene suurem taim, mis sai ostetud ja võlus mind esimesest silmapilgust. Ta lehed on tumerohelised ning lehtede alumine pool on lillaka tooniga. Lisaks sellele on tal õitsemisperioodil oranžid õied. Minu taim elas just üle oma kõige aegade suurima madalseisu, kus tekkis täitsa hirm, kas temast enam elulooma on. Ei tea, kas vahepealsed temperatuurikõikumised või liigne/vähene niiskus hakkas teda häirima. Veebist abi otsides toodigi välja: "taim saab kas liiga palju või liiga vähe vett" - üsnagi polaarne vastasseis. Lõikasin ära kõik vähegi surevad lehed ning seetõttu ta selline hõredake hetkel ka välja näeb. Katsetan ta kastmist destilleeritud veega, sest Google'i sõnul on ta vee (ja tuuletõmbuse) osas väga tundlik. Tahaks loota, et ta suudab mingi hetk uuesti ka õisi toota, kuid praegu on kõige olulisemaks taastumine.
Praegune lahinguplaan on teda kord nädalas kasta, kuid veega piserdada iga päev. Crocata kriisiaeg oli ka üheks inspiratsiooniks, miks tahtsin seda postitust kirjutada - ehk otsib keegi kunagi abi ja kui mu tiigerlehik eluvaimu uuesti leiab, siis saab siit mingitki nõu, mida ja kuidas.
Rufibarba - võrdlemisi uus ost ja hetkel veel vaatame, kuidas ja mis talle siin praktikas meeldib (teooriat on loetud küll). Lehtede värvi poolest sarnane Crocatale ning see oli ka üks põhjus, miks see minuga poest kaasa tuli. Kastan umbes 2 korda nädalas ja veega piserdan iga päev.
Pildi parema valgustuse jaoks tõstsin mõlemad kardina tagant välja, kuid üldiselt varjan neid otsese päikesevalguse käest.

My absolute favorites. Crocata (in the background) was the first bigger plant that I bought and it was definitely love at first sight. Its leaves are deep dark green and the underside has a purplish hue. In addition to beautiful leaves, it also has orange blossoms when in bloom. My plant just survived the biggest crisis of its life so far, and I wasn't even sure whether it would pull through or not. Uncertain, if it was because of the temperature fluctuation or because of its soil being too damp/dry. When I searched the web for answers it gave this exact reason - it either gets too much or too little water. Total polar opposites, can't really think much of that. I cut off everything that seemed without a hope and that's why it looks a bit sparse. I'm testing to water it with distilled water because according to Google it's very water (and draft) sensitive. I sure hope that some day it will be able to produce new blossoms as well but the main goal right now is just to get better. Current battle plan is to water it once a week and spray every day. Crocata's crisis was one the reasons why I wanted to write this entry. Maybe someday someone is also looking for help and they'll find something useful from my personal experience and tests.
Rufibarba - a relatively new purchase and we're still testing what works the best for it in practice (I've read the theory). Color of the leaves is quite similar to Crocata and it's one of the reasons that drew me to it. I water it about 2 times a week and spray every day.
For the sake of a better photo, I took them both out from behind the curtain, but in general they prefer to stay out of direct sunlight.

Orhidee
Ostetud sügisel mõne õiega, mis ta õigepea küll kaotas. Talveks jäid alles ainult lehed ja midagi erilist ma temaga ei teinud peale kastmise (kui meelde tuli). Asukoht on kogu aeg sama olnud (idapoolne aken) ning kevadel, kui rohkem valgust tekkis, puhkes ta päris võimsalt õide. Sellisena ongi ta nüüd püsinud mitu head kuud ja alles sel nädalal hakkasid mõned õied viimaks maha kukkuma. Üldiselt üritasin ka temaga mingit kastmisgraafikut teha ja praegu on toiminud klaasike vett kord nädalas. Orhideesid rohkem võtta ei plaani, nad on küll ilusad (ei tekitanud hoolitsusel ka erilist peavalu), aga näevad nii õrnakesed välja ja hetkel pole rohkem ka sobivat pinda, kus nad võiks elutseda.

Bought in autumn with just a few blossoms which it lost soon after. During the whole of winter it just had leaves and I watered it whenever I remembered. Location has stayed the same throughout (window facing the East) and in spring it blossomed quite successfully. It has stayed this way for many months now and it only just this week started to lose some of its blossoms. I also enforced a watering schedule which was a glass (or so) once a week. Even though it hasn't given me any trouble yet, I don't plan to get any more orchids. They look nice, but seem so fragile at the same time. In addition, I just don't have a suitable place for new ones as well.

Unknown + Tillandsia ionatha
Tagataustal esimesel pildil olnud tundmatu taime üks ära kukkunud osa. Pistsin ta tavalisse mulda (vist juba kevadel) ja kastan umbes sama tihti kui emataime. Senimaani pole kasvu väga palju juurde tulnud, aga lehed on rohelised ja elu näib olevat.
Teine õhutaim, mis on xerographicaga samal ajal ostetud. Kastmise osas toimetan kõigi õhutaimedega sarnaselt.

In the background is a part that broke off the unknown plant. I put it in soil this spring and water it as often as its mother plant. It hasn't taken off in growth so far, but it does look alive and green, so...I'll keep it up.
The other air plant was bought at the same time as xerographica. I water all my air plants at the same time, so nothing new with this one.

Unknown succulent + Tillandsia cyanea
Esimene ostetud juba mõned aastad tagasi üpris pisikese taimena ning seejärel istutatud ümber praegusesse potti. Suuremaks pole mitme aasta jooksul kasvanud, kuid väsimuse märke samuti ei märka. Hetkel ma pigem eelistangi, et ta sellise suurusega on ja ei plaani teda suuremasse potti panna - muidugi kui ilmneb märke, et ta pole enam oma kasvukohaga rahul, siis leiame teise lahenduse.
Tillandsia cyanea ostetud kevadel ning lõikasin just sel nädalal ta nö õie ära. Võimalik, et ta ei hakka uusi idusid kasvatama ning seega võib emataim samuti surra. Elame-näeme. Veega kastmise osas vägagi leplik ja ei nõua üldse palju. Olen aru saanud, et tegemist on tegelikult ka õhutaimega ning ta oleks rahul peamiselt ka piserdamisega.

First one I bought a couple of years ago as a wee little plant and then potted into the one you see in this photo. It hasn't grown in a year or two, but despite that it isn't showing any signs of distress. I actually prefer it this size, but if one day it starts looking unhappy, I'll look into repotting.
Tillandsia cyanea was bought in spring and just this week I cut off its paddle. It's possible that it will not have any more new growths and the mother plant will die - we'll see. It's very chill about watering and doesn't require much. As I understand, it's actually sort of an air plant and it's perfectly fine with mostly spraying.

Taim on saadud kingituseks koos pildil oleva hoidjaga ja juba mitu aastat vana. Ta vennas sai küll mingil põhjusel hukka, aga senimaani on see pisike vastu pidanud.

Got this one (+ the holder) as a gift a few years ago. Its brother died (as mentioned before), but this little fellow has survived so far.

Ficus elastica
Kõige uuem pereliige, toodud sõbranna poolt lõunanaabrite juures. Kummipuu on teadaolevalt populaarne toataim ning tal on ka õhupuhastavad omadused. Hetkel andsin talle võrdlemisi hea valgusega asukoha ja jälgin, kuidas talle seal meeldib.

The newest member of the family, brought by my friend from our Southern neighbours. Ficus is a very popular house plant and it also has air-purifying qualities. It has quite a nicely lit area at the moment, we'll see if it likes it there or not.

Ceropegia woodii
Elutseb mu juures talvest saadik ning viibis vahepeal esikus, kuhu päevavalgust ei lange. Selle tulemusena hakkasid lehed tuhmuma ja alla kukkuma ning seejärel tõstsin ta lõunapoolse akna juurde. Valgusküllane asukoht sobib talle väga hästi ning seal pole probleeme märganud. Kasta pigem harvem, läbikuivamise osas mõistlik. Tegelikult peaks teda ka pügama ning kuulu järgi on ära lõigatud osad võimalik mulda panna, kus nad paljunevad. Pole veel proovinud, kuid on plaanis.

Has been living with me since the winter and was located in the hallway where sunlight doesn't reach. As a result, the leaves started to lose color and began falling off. Then I put it near a window facing South and it's been really enjoying it there. I water it sparingly and sometimes even forget to, but it hasn't given me any grief even after I've forgotten to water it for quite some time. It has grown quite long and it's recommended to trim it once a while. I read that it's possible to put trimmings in soil and they'll grow into new plants. Haven't done that yet but I'm eager to try it soon.

Ungari, Budapest osa II // Hungary, Budapest Part II

Lugu Budapestis jätkub. Kui tavaliselt olen reisidele kaasa tassinud kõiki objektiive ja akulaadjat, siis seekord otsustasin, et kaasa tulevad küll kõik objektiivid, aga mitte akulaadija. Ruumi oleks kotis olnud, aga see ~100-200g tundus "asjatu" lisa olevat. Eksisin rängalt! Enamikel reisidel ei ole väga viitsinud objektiivivahetusega tegeleda, peamiseks on saanud ikka see, mis iganes kõige mitmekülgsem parasjagu on. Vaid väga harva olen viitsinud põlve otsas balansseerides objektiivi eest ära kruvida. Iga kord selliselt reisilt naastes olen end vaikselt kirunud - no milleks oli vaja kõike seda tehnikat kaasa vedada, kui puudust ma sellest poleks tundnud.
Mitte iial pole ma aga kaamera akut nii tühjaks suutnud pildistada, et sealt enam ühtegi piiksu ei tule. Seekord olid lood vähe teised...võrdlemisi aktiivsesse kasutusse läksid kõik objektiivid ning õnnetuseks juhtus ka see, et viimasel päeval sai aku täiesti tühjaks. Pildistada oleks tol hetkel üht-teist veel olnud, kuid tollest hetkest pidin leppima telefoni kaameraga. Tunne oli võõras, omada ühel hetkel ühtmoodi perspektiivi ja võimalusi ning siis harjuda ümber telefoni võimekusega. Vähemasti siit ka õppetund, et kaamera laadijat maha jätta pole kunagi hea mõte.
Pilte hiljem sorteerides märkasin, et meeletus koguses on kaadreid majadest ja arhitektuurist. Imestada pole samas midagi, sest tegelikult oli kesklinnas peaaegu iga maja selline, mis ühes või teises mõttes oli suisa vaatamisväärsus. Kui hakata võrdlema Tallinnaga, siis siin sellist mitmekesisust ja detailirohkust, vähemasti arhitektuuri mõttes, ei leidu.
Reis kestis vahemikus 17-23 mai ning vahetusraha võtsin 150 euro eest. Kohapeal võtsin lisaks välja 30 eurot ning mõnes kohas maksin ka kaardiga. Väga edukalt saab hakkama ka vähemaga. Ehk veidi tavapäratu oli see, et üheski klassikalises muuseumis ei käinudki, kuigi olime mõned oma to-do listi pannud. Samas ei leia, et midagi on nüüd nägemata jäänud või et oleks ikka võinud mõne muuseumi kuskile päevakavasse pressida - tegevust oli niigi omajagu.
Negatiivse poole pealt võib ehk mainida üldist teenindust. Inglise keeles suhtlemine kuskil probleeme ei tekitanud, kuid tihti juhtus seda, et tšekki/teenindajat pidi kaua ootama - ehk siis kiirest kohvist sai tunniajane aja mahavõtt. Ei ole end kunagi pidanud eriliselt nõudlikuks, kuid tasahilju märkasime sarnaseid jooni peaaegu igas teenindusasutuses. Üldiselt võiks ka sellest kõigest pikemalt rääkida, aga pigem keskenduks positiivsel.
Käisime kaemas ka ööelu ning vaieldamatult on üks kuumemaid kohti selleks Szimpla Kert, mille uksetaga lookles õhtul suisa järjekord. Interjöörilt on see väga psühhedeeliline, seega tasub pilk peale visata (kuigi mitte ehk neil, kes eelistavad pigem traditsioonilisi/ootuspäraseid peopaiku).

Selle postituse lõpus ja ühtlasi ka reisi viimasel päeval, käisime Budapesti loomaaias. Paljud on kindlasti näinud videosid pardipoegadest, kes kanalisatsiooniaukudesse kukuvad ja pardiema ei saa teha muud, kui ainult abitult prääksuda. Just nii juhtus ka loomaaias, vabapidamisel pardipoeg tatsas kraavi ning sealt enam välja ei saanud. Pardiema sinna samuti appi ei pääsenud. Ei jäänud muud üle, kui kraavi hüpata ja poeg sealt välja aidata 😀 Ilma kalli härrata oleks aga minagi kraavi jäänud, sest sügavust oli seal omajagu ning oma jõududega oleks hätta jäänud.
Kokkuvõtvalt: nagu juba öeldud, siis esialgu on oht jääda ammulisui vahtima kõiki maju. Lisaks on kliima seal väheke parem kui Tallinnas. Geograafiliselt tundus see mulle olevat täpselt "paras", veidike mägisust, kuid mitte midagi üleliigset. Hindade osas on kõik nii ja naa, kesklinnas suhteliselt sama hinnaklass, mis Eestis. Mõned asjad ehk veidi odavamad. Toit ei erine väga märkimisväärselt, maitsev oli kõik (kuigi tihtipeale olid meie valikud menüüst ka üpris "kindlapeale minek").
Lõpetuseks võib öelda, et vaatamist, uudistamist ja avastamist Budapestis on küll ja veel.

Our story in Budapest continues. When I usually go on a trip, I take all my camera lenses and, of course, the battery charger with me. This time, for some reason, I decided that I'll take all of my lenses, but not the charger. Because that extra 100-200 grams was such a "waste of space and weight", I suppose. Well, this trip definitely proved me wrong in many aspects. It's actually unusual for me to use every lens I've taken with me, in my experience I've mainly used the one that is the most versitile - it's always such a hassle to change lenses in the middle of the street. Every single time I come back and wonder why on Earth I had all this weight on me all the time, if I could've gone without. This time, however, I actually used everything I had with me. I also managed to completely run dry my battery, which has never happened before. Fortunately the battery lasted by the end of our final day, and even though there were still things I wanted to capture, I was able to do so with my phone. Such a strange feeling, when one minute you're able to use your good equipment and the next minute you only have your phone, which naturally is more restrictive than a DSLR. But at least a lesson was learned - it's never a good idea to leave your camera charger behind.
When I went through my Budapest gallery at home, I noticed that I took many photos of buildings and architecture in general. Looking back, it's not actually surprising because every single house/building was unique and a sight for sore eyes for sure. Tallinn really hasn't got anything that nice in comparison, at least in the architectual department.
The trip lasted from May 17th til May 23rd and I took 150 EUR equivalent in HUF with me. In addition, I withdrew about 30 EUR in Budapest and also paid by debit card in some places. That amount is actually more than enough, it's absolutely possible to go with less than that as well. We didn't visit any museums, although we had a few in our to-do list. So that was a bit unusual, because it's such a common thing to do on trips. But I don't feel like I missed out on anything or that we should've squeezed a museum into our plans no matter what. There were still plenty of things to see and do.
On a more negative side I must say a word about the service troubles we had in Budapest. Communication in English was definitely not a problem, but waiting for the check or the server and oftentimes finding out we were almost forgotton was a common thread in many cafes/restaurants we went to. I don't consider myself a very picky person (in terms of eating out), I just like to eat and then pay for my food as quickly as possible (I actually prefer paying beforehand to prevent this situation with waiting on a check). I could go more into details about our experience, but I'd like to stay more on the positive side of things.
We also looked into the nightlife areas and Szimpla Kert is definitely a very popular place, with people queing outside in the evening. Its interior is very psychedelic, not a place I'd recommend for your average 80-year old grandma (not discriminating though, but I'd be surprised to find one in there).
In the end of this post (and also on our last day in Budapest) we went to the zoo. I'm sure many have seen videos of little ducklings who have fallen into sewer holes. Usually the mother duck can't do much than cry out helplessly. Exactly that happened in the zoo, a freely roaming duckling fell into a trench and couldn't get out, its mother was very upset and wouldn't leave the trench. So I jumped in and helped the duckling out. If it weren't for my boyfriend, I wouldn't have gotten out myself - the depth was more than my height.

My conclusion of Budapest: as I said before, it's a real "danger" to just look in awe and drool over every building you see at first. The climate is better than in Tallinn. To me, Budapest has the perfect balance of flat ground and hills. The surrounding hills are not so in your face and overpowering - they just add a nice touch, if you can say so. Price range is pretty much the same as in Estonia, maybe some things are a bit cheaper. The food is also good, although I have to admit that we picked quite "safe" choices from the menus.
There is definitely more to see and discover in Budapest, so maybe one day I'll go for a revisit.

Budapesti autopargist rääkides...populaarsed olid Renault Cliod, igat sorti väiksemad autod ja...mingil põhjusel on see linn, kus ma olen kõige rohkem silmanud Fiat Multiplasid...mis värk on? Ahjaa, ka Ladasid asjatas ringi.

Speaking of cars most widely seen in Budapest...the most popular ones were all kinds of small/compact cars, Renault Clios and for some reason it's the city where I've seen WAY too many Fiat Multiplas, what is up with that? Oh, and there were also quite a few Ladas, which gave a nice nostalgic feel.

Kultuurisündmus muuseumi ees + mingit sorti laat. Paraku polnud inglise keeles tutvustavaid silte ja seega mõistatuseks see jäigi.

Turg. Võimas ja korralik. Ma ei tea, mis teema on ungarlastel ilusate katusemustritega, aga...see on absoluutselt fantastiline, jätkake samal lainel palun. Turust. Alumisel korrusel peamiselt kala ja kõiksugu marineeritud asjad (muideks, eksisteerib ka marineerimiskunst, nagu tuleb välja - s.t toidust näod ja kirjad purkides), esimesel sissepääsutasandil palju maitseaineid (ilmnes, et paprikapulber on kuum teema), puuvilja-juurvilja ning veidi ka liha. Nö kolmandal korrusel oli tänavatoiduosa ja suveniirid. Toit nägi eemalt päris ahvatlev välja, kuid kahjuks oli see ala väga ülerahvastatud.

A farmer's market, worth it's name for sure. I don't know what is up with Hungarians and beautiful roof patterns, but...boy, please keep up the good work, it's wonderful. About the market itself. On the ground level (-1 I suppose) there were mostly fish/sea products and all kinds of marinated stuff in jars (they even had decoratively marinated jars), entry level had spices (mainly paprika, which turned out to be a huge thing in Hungary), fruits and vegetables and some meat. On the third (or second) floor there was street food and souvenirs. The food looked very appetizing, but sadly the area was way too crowded to snack on something peacefully.

Imeilus Ikarus. Kui meil vurasid kunagi Tallinnas vaid samalaadsed kollased bussid, siis siin saime sõita Ikaruse trolliga. Tuttav ja samas nii võõras ühteaegu.

Ikarus the beautiful, the mighty. We got to ride on an Ikarus trolleybus, which was familiar but different at the same time. Many moons ago we used to have yellow Ikarus buses on the streets of Tallinn.

Ja nüüd loomaaed. Kuna mu kaamera aku näitas tõsiseid väsimuse märke, siis ei pildistanud siin nii palju kui oleks ehk soovinud. Igal juhul on see loomaaed imeline, ütleks, et suisa kohustuslik, kui Budapesti sattuda. Nägin päris mitmeid liike, mida Tallinnas pole. Elukeskkond tundus väga mõnus ja avar olevat, maastiku ja üldilmega on seal vaeva nähtud. Google Mapsi järgi veedavad inimesed seal tavaliselt "3 tundi", aga olen päris kindel, et meil kulus seal kõvasti rohkem aega. Ala ise on päris suur, kuid samas mitte laialivalguv. Mitmest ekspositsioonist ruttasime lõpuks mööda, sest muidu oleks kulunud kõige selle jaoks üle poole päeva.

And now the zoo. My camera's battery was really starting to die on me, so I didn't take as many photos as I had hoped. But the zoo itself was really amazing. I would even go as far as saying that it is a mandatory visit for those who plan a trip to Budapest. I saw quite a few species that we do not have in Tallinn. They have really worked hard to have such nice plants and environment, all kinds of natural looking rocks/hills and realistic areas for the animals. Google Maps stated that people usually spend "3 hours there", but I'm pretty sure we were there longer than that. The zoo itself is quite big and packed, but spacious at the same time. In the end we rushed through some buildings and expositions because it would've taken more than there are hours in the day, to fully explore everything.

Ungari, Budapest osa I // Hungary, Budapest Part I

Mai keskel sai käidud Ungari pealinnas Budapestis. Kuna Eestist otselendu ei ole, siis esmalt Helsinkisse ja sealt juba edasi otse Budapesti. Majutuskohaks nagu ikka Airbnb, mille omanikud pakkusid ka transporditeenust lennujaamast sihtpunkti. Selle hinnaks oli umbes 27 eurot. Lennujaamast linna (ja vastupidi) viib ka eribuss, 100E, millele pileti peab eraldi ostma (näiteks automaadist). Tagasi just nii sõitsimegi, tavaline 7 päeva ühistranspordipilet selle puhul ei kehti ning seega on eribussi hinnaks 900HUF ehk ligikaudu 3 eurot. Lennujaamas oli enamus ühistranspordipileti automaate rivist väljas, töös vaid üks ning eraldi ka kassa. Valisime tulles etteplaneeritud otsetranspordi puhtalt mugavuse pärast, et kohe ei peaks hakkama sahmima, kuhu, kuidas ja kust saab. Ei kujuta ette, kumb variant lõpuks kiirem oleks olnud, sest autosõit võttis omajagu aega, ummikud olid kesklinnas selleks hetkeks juba üsnagi arvestatavad. Nagu meie juht ka ütles, siis see on vanade linnade probleem - planeering on tehtud ammu ja ei suuda mahutada tänapäevaliiklust.
Airbnb võõrustajaga kohtumine venis ning seega maandusime esmalt esimeses ettejuhtuvas söögikohas. Kui lõpuks oli aeg võtmed saada, selgus, et koristaja polnud eelmiste külaliste järgselt korterisse jõudnud ning seega tuli minna linna aega parajaks tegema.
Kuna majutuse asukohas olid mitmed vaatamisväärsused käe-jala juures, sai enamus neist läbitud jalgsi. Kaugematesse punktidesse minekuks kasutasime nii metrood, trolli kui bussi. Seitsme päeva ühistranspordipileti hinda väga täpselt ei mäleta, ehk oli kuskil 14-15 000 HUF? Automaadist ostes saab ka kaardiga maksta. Sõbrannalt saadud soovitus esimese metrooliini osas oli täkkesse, tegemist on väga vana ja armsa metrooga ning soovitan ka omalt poolt sellega sõita. Imeline on veel see, et ühistranspordipilet katab ka laevasõidu jõel (vähemasti E-R), seega oleks patt mitte seda võimalust kasutada.
Ilmaga oli vedanud, ei olnud liiga kuum ega samas liiga külm. Natuke vahepeal vihma küll tuli ning kõige suurem sadu, koos rahega, juhtus olema siis, kui külastasime kaubanduskeskust WestEnd City Center. Viimases proovisin esimest korda KFC'd ning pidin selles pettuma, ei midagi sellist, mis maitsemeelt hellitaks. Enne suurema šopingu algust oli ühel hetkel maja üks tiib suitsu täis ning päästemeeskond sees, välja käsutati kõik inimesed. Jäime pärast ootama ehk õnnestub uuesti sisse pääseda, kuid töötajatelt tuli info, et ühes söögikohas on olnud tulekahju ning majja enam kedagi ei lubata. Suurt kaubarallit ma lõppkokkuvõttes ei teinudki, eks kohati kammitses ka käsipagas. Külastatud kaubanduskeskustes oli mitmeid poode, mis kattusid ka Tallinnas leitavaga. Eks äärelinna pool oleks valik kindlasti vähe teisem olnud.
Traditsioonilisest toidust tahtsin kindlasti proovida ehtsat guljaši, kuid see ei erinenud maitse poolest eriti sellest, mida kodus olen harjunud saama.
Saatanast on aga pangaautomaadid, mis teevad vaid näo, et nad on pangaautomaadid. Need tunneb ära EUR HUF kirjade järgi. Minu pank võtab välismaal 1 EUR + mingi protsent väljavõetavast summast, sellele oleks juurde tulnud sellise automaadi poolt kehtestatud väljavõtutasu, mis samuti olenes konkreetsest summast. Õnneks leidus siiski ka tavapäraseid automaate, mis toimisid ootuspäraselt.

I had the privilege to visit the capital of Hungary, Budapest, in May. Since there is no direct flight from Tallinn to Budapest, we had to fly through Helsinki. As usual, we booked housing via Airbnb. The host also offered a car service from the airport to our destination which cost about 27 euros. You can also get to the city with a designated bus, 100E, which has a specific ticket that costs 900 HUF or roughly 3 euros (it can be bought from ticket vending machines or kiosks). Most ticket machines were out of order in the airport, so we bought our 7 day general public transportation ticket once we got to the city centre (PS! General ticket does not cover the airport bus). We had previously agreed on using the transportation that our host offered and the driver picked us up from the airport soon after landing. I'm not sure which (bus/car) would've been faster, the traffic was pretty bad even though it wasn't rush hour yet. As our driver said, the city is old, the planning is old and that's why traffic jams can get pretty bad. On our way back to Tallinn we used the service bus to get to the airport, there are 2 two stops you can get on it.
Meeting with our Airbnb host was delayed and to gather ourselves a bit, we grabbed a coffee in the nearest cafe in the neighbourhood. When it was finally time to get the keys it became clear that the cleaning service hadn't cleaned up after the last tenants and so we begun our walk in the city earlier than expected.
Our home was located in the city centre, so we ended walking to most places. But we also used public transportation, I was recommended to use the Subway line number 1, which is very old and, I suppose, cute - there's no other way to describe it. Shoutout to Helena for a good tip! My memory is a bit hazy, but I believe the public transportation ticket cost about 14-15 000 HUF for seven days and you could purchase it from vending machines which accepted debit cards (and cash). Another amazing perk of this ticket is that it also covers boat rides (at least Mon - Fri), so it would be a shame not to use this opportunity.
The weather was quite nice, not too hot and not too cold. There was a hailstorm during our visit to the WestEnd City Center mall and that happened exactly when the fireman had asked everyone to leave the building; we were casually strolling in the mall when suddenly there was smoke in the air and firemen all over the place. We stayed for a bit, waiting for it to open soon again but after a while the personnel told us that there was a small fire and the mall would be closed for today. Oh well! At least I got to try KFC for the first time, although the meal left me underwhelmed. I just don't get the appeal. In the end I didn't really buy anything from Budapest, because I was slightly held back by hand luggage limits and all the malls we visited had many overlapping stores with Tallinn.
We didn't stumble upon a good Hungarian restaurant, but I did get to try their traditional goulash soup, which wasn't that different from the ones I've had in the past.
ATMs with EUR HUF signs are the devil, I say. My bank charges me 1EUR + some percentage of the money withdrawn (overseas). In addition to that, those ATMs generate their own withdrawal sum fee, which is just ugh! If you're not paying attention, you could be charged unknowingly. And they are absolutely everywhere as well! Thank heavens there were normal ATMs around.

Ja siin on meie ajutise kodu siseõu. Kuigi mulle teoorias sellised siseõued on alati nunnud tundunud, siis sain nüüd aru, et praktikas on lood veidi teised. Pimedas kasutavad elanikud lampi, mis esimesel korrusel olles toa valgeks lööb (arusaadav muidugi, pilkases pimeduses ei olegi teisiti võimalik). Samuti ei ole võimalik aknast adekvaatselt ilma hinnata, sest taevast väga näha ei ole. Lompide järgi on küll võimalik näha, kas sadu on olnud või mitte, kuid üldmuljet sellest, mis väljas on, väga ei teki. Eks loomulikult on kõik on harjumise küsimus ja mingil hetkel ei pruugi sellest puudustki tunda.

Meie Airbnb üleandmisel selgus, et eelmised üürilised olid endast maha jätnud väikse seapesa ning ka koristaja polnud sinna veel jõudnud, seega ei saanud kahe lennu järel voodisse pikali kohe visata ja pidime linnas ajaveetmist koheselt alustama.

And here is the courtyard of our temporary home. Although I've always been fascinated by these types of courtyards, I actually found it to be a bit impracitcal - there's a lamp which lights up the whole courtyard. People who enter the building use it when it's dark outside and when you reside on the first floor, it can become quite annoying. But I mean, it's understandable, you can't really see anything in the dark. It's also quite difficult to tell the weather by looking outside the window, because you can only see a glimpse of the sky and that's it. As they say, you get to used to everything, so maybe that's not even a problem for most people.

When we got the keys it appeared that the previous travelers had been quite messy and the cleaning service had yet to come, so we had to start exploring the city sooner than expected. It would've been nice just to drop on the couch for 15 minutes

Budapesti silm/vaateratas, 10 eurot täiskasvanule. Mõned ringid, natuke seismist ja linnavaadete nautimist. Üldiselt hea ilmaga - miks mitte.

Kiievist Odessasse sõitsime öörongiga kaheses kupees. Kuigi aastal 2006 sai Moskvasse samuti rongiga sõidetud, ei olnud seekord unega sama õnne - öö jooksul ei õnnestunudki kordagi magama jääda. Sihtkohta saabusime umbes 06:20 paiku ning juba rongijaamas tervitasid meid väsimatud kohalikud teenusepakkujad - üle jaama kõlasid hüüdlausetena pakkumised korteritest ja taksodest.
Õnneks oli korter rongijaamast vaid tagasihoidliku jalutuskäigu kaugusel ning transporti me ei vajanud. Ilmselt oleks sealt taksojuhi värbamine läinud maksma ka keskmisest kõrgema hinna, nagu ikka enamikes turismipiirkondade transpordipunktides.

Peale korterisse maandumist, otsustasime veidi süüa ning tutvuda esimeste vaatamisväärsustega. Siiski sai varsti selgeks, et magamata öö mõjub raskemalt kui esialgu tunda andis ning seetõttu naasime korterisse, et paariks tunniks silm looja lasta.
Ilm saatis alguses vastakaid signaale - päikesepaiste, sadu, siis sadu ja päikesepaiste. Lõpuks pöördus see siiski eelduslikult palavaks rannailmaks. See oli ka üks põhjus, miks Odessas pildistamine mul eriti ei õnnestunud - ei olnud jaksu lämmatavas kuumuses kaamerat kaelas kanda või seda kotist rannarätikute ning reisitarvikute vahelt otsida. Mõne kiirema momendi jäädvustamiseks kasutasin pigem käepärasemat telefonikaamerat.

Enne reisi tegime muidugi ka veidi eeltööd ja uurisime Odessa igapäevaelu kohta. Selgus, et taskuvargused ja agressiivsed kerjused pidid olema väga teemas. Kohati tundus, et pole ühtegi inimest, kes oleks sealt ilma varguse ohvriks langemiseta lahkunud. Paranoia võttis võimust ning piltlikult öeldes kasvatasime silmad isegi kuklasse, et olla maksimaalselt valvel. Õnneks võib öelda, et keegi meid nende päevade jooksul paljaks ei röövinud. Vaatamisväärsuste juures hoidsime silmad lahti ning rahvarohketesse ööelu tulipunktidesse väga ei sattunud.

Tõele au andes oli kerjuseid tõesti palju, kuid mida mõeldi postitustes mainitud "agressiivsete kerjuste" all, on vast tõlgenduse küsimus. Keegi meilt otseselt raha välja pressima ei tulnud. Küll aga leidus seal rasedaid ja lastega naisi, kes tulid söögikohtade väliterrassidel raha küsima ning see oli ka üks meeldejäävamaid momente Odessa kurvemast poolest.
Ühel õhtupoolikul külastasime ka legendaarset turgu, mis jätab tallinlastele tuntud keskturu tumedasse varju. Kuna turupäev oli lõppemas, ei näinud me ilmselt päris täisvõimsusel toimivat kauplemismelu, kuid sellegipoolest oli vaatepilt võimas. Kes tahab ja jõuab seal korraliku ostlemistuuri ette võtta, ei pea kindlasti pettuma. Meie sihiks oli kohalikku arbuusi proovida ning ühe neljakilose pooliku sealt koju ka vedasime. Müüja sõnades kahtlema ei pidanud, sest arbuus oli tõesti magus ja mahlane.

Üllataval kombel märkasime just Odessas reisi esimesi eestlasi. Nende nägemise osas oli rõõm nii suur, et nad kuulsid mu kilkamist isegi peale möödumist ning lehvitasid rõõmsalt vastu. Hiljem sattusid vastu veel vähemalt 2 eestikeelset seltskonda.
Tagasilend toimus ümberistumisega ning Odessast startis lennuk Riia poole kell 03:40 öösel, seega paraku taas üks unetu öö. Reisile pani Ukrainale omase stiilipuhta punkti Dacia Uber (50 km/h alas 100 km/h ilma turvavööta - sest miks mitte!), mis meid lennujaama viis.

We chose a night train as our means of transportation to get from Kiev to Odessa. Although I've spent couple of nights on a train before in 2006 from Tallinn to Moscow, I had no luck falling asleep this time - the swaying was just a bit too much. We arrived at our destination at 06:20 AM and were instantly greeted by "vocal locals" offering apartments for rent and taxi rides.
Thankfully our apartment was not that far away from the train station and we didn't need a car to get there. The taxis probably have a much higher rate that usual, just as expected in any tourist-filled place.

After we had settled down in our apartment, we decided to have breakfast and do a bit of early sightseeing. It became clear quite fast that the previous sleepless night was weighing us down more that expected, so we took a mandatory nap.
The weather was playing tricks at first - sunshine, rain, then sunshine and rain. It finally stopped fooling around and returned to being super hot and sweaty. And that was one of the reasons, why my Odessa travel photo folders are much emptier from Kiev's. Warm weather makes me quite lethargic plus it's more easier to grab a phone for a quick photo, than to rummage through a heavy bag every single time you spot something interesting.

Something we had come across while researching for Odessa, were the warnings about pickpockets. There were posts talking about aggressive beggars and it seemed as if no one returns from Odessa with all of their belongings. That, of course, made us wary and paranoid - figuratively speaking, we grew eyes behind our backs in order to spot any kind of suspicious activity. Thankfully we didn't have any problems and got back home safe and sound. Just kept our eyes open near any touristy attractions, didn't flaunt wallets, phones or documents around and didn't spend that much time exploring the busy nightlife hotspots.

That being said, I can say that the part about beggars is partly true, there's quite a lot of them. But what is considered to be an "aggressive beggar", depends on the person's experience and point of view, I think. We weren't grabbed and demanded money by anyone, although one of the most memorable incidents of the sad side of Odessa, were couple of pregnant women with children, asking for money from people eating out in the open terrace areas. Be prepared, because you will get approached like this by different people.

The legendary (farmer's) market was also something on our to-do list and we stopped by at the end of the day. It overshadows our own central market by miles. Since the most heated hours of day had passed, we didn't get to see the bargaining in full effect, but the sight was memorable nonetheless. Our goal was to try local watermelon, so we found a smaller (4 kg) half and brought it home with us. The seller wasn't lying, it really was juicy and sweet.

Interestingly enough, we met our first fellow Estonians in Odessa. I got a bit too excited and that drew their attention to us, so they smiled and waved back at us. We bumped into at least two other groups of Estonians on subsequent days.
Flight back departed in the middle of the night from Odessa to Riga (another 24h without sleep :D). We ubered to Odessa airport in a true Ukrainian Uber style - Dacia, going 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. By 08:30AM I was back at home.

Potjomkini trepid. Trepid, see ütleb kõik. Kui on soov Rockyt teha, siis agaramad võivad alt higistes dressides üles joosta. Meie lähenesime treppidele õnneks ülevalt ja ei tundnud vastupandamatut soovi alla minna vaid selleks, et neist taas üles rühkida - ronida saime Kiievis täie raha eest. Lisaks läksime sinna peale unetut ööd rongis, seega jõuvarudega just kiita ei olnud. Treppe peetakse küll Odessa üheks vaatamisväärsuseks, kuid paraku ei olnud minu jaoks tegemist meeletut elevust tekitava vaatepildiga.

Potemkin stairs. Stairs, that says it all. If anyone wishes do Rocky and run in a sweaty gym outfit up the stairs, the stage is yours. We approached them from the top and since we had done our fair share of stair-climbing back in Kiev (looking at you, Motherland monument), there was really no willpower left in us to do it again. In addition, we had been up all night in the train, so the body and mind were not up for the challenge. These stairs are considered to be a must-see in Odessa, but to me, they didn't really have a huge wow-effect.

Teed Arkadia randa kaunistab vihmavarjude installatsioon. Sõit kesklinnast randa kulges tramm number viiega ning soojal suvepäeval oli see üks hullemaid transpordisõite üldse. Rahvast oli meeletult ning imekombel suutis piletikontrolör end sellest hoolimata vedelikuks moondada ning peatuste vahel trammi otsast lõpuni läbi käia, müts maha nende tädide ees.
Randa läksime tegelikult tööpäeval ning ilmselt on seal puhkepäeval võimatu vaba liivaruutu leida. Päev ise oli minusuguse soojapõlguri jaoks liigagi palav, must meri seevastu üllatas üpris jaheda veega. Rannas on võimalik rentida ka lamamistoole ning päikesevarje. Söögipoolise eest hoolitsevad väsimatud "rändkaupmehed", kelle sortimendi hulgas leidub kuivatatud kala, külma õlut, maisitõlvikuid kui ka krevette.

Road towards Arkadia Beach is partly decorated with these colorful umbrellas. Journey to the beach from the city center, was one crazy tram-ride. The amount of people that these trams could hold, is absolutely amazing. More amazing though, is the ability of the ticket lady to somehow transform herself into liquid and flow through a fully packed tram to sell tickets.
We went to the beach on a work/business day, so I can only imagine how crowded it would be on the weekends. The day was too hot for my taste and the Black Sea was surprisingly chilly, which was exactly what I needed. It's possible to rent beach chairs and umbrellas as well. Various food, such as shrimp, dried fish, corn cobs and cold beer, was sold by hard-working men and women, strolling up and down the beach.

Esialgu oli meil plaanis võtta osa Odessa sisehoovide tuurist, kuid see läks veidike vett vedama. Parim järgmine valik oli kriminaalse Odessa tuur, kus liiklemine toimus osaliselt bussiga, osaliselt jalgsi ning mille käigus tutvustati ka mõndasid temaatiliselt seotud sisehoove.
Mulle jubedalt meeldivad sellised lihtsad, veidi räsitud elamised, mis on täis värvikaid ja omanäolisi lahendusi. Iseloomu jagub, sest sellist disaini juba kataloogist ei telli.

We had planned to participate in the courtyards tour, but that unfortunately fell through. The next best thing was to go on a criminal Odessa tour, which took us to some thematically related courtyards and introduced the darker side of how the city once was.
I really like places like these, simple and rugged yet homely at the same time. They're full of unique DIY decorative pieces and every home has so much character. Definitely designs you can't buy from just any other catalog.

Viimaks siseneme ka Pripyati. Esmalt väike peatus sildi juures, jutt/tutvustus punasest metsast ja seejärel juba linn ise. Eeldasin endas tunda kohest äratundmisrõõmu, sest lugematul hulgal pilte, videoklippe ja filme olen sellest kohast vaadanud juba aastaid. Paraku ei suutnud ma esialgu aru saada, kuhu täpsemalt meid viidi - suured ja avarad alleed on kõik parajasse džunglisse mattunud. Isegi rohkem, kui suutsin ette kujutada.
Giidi sõnul oli tegemist oma aja näidislinnaga, mille looja/arhitekti eesmärgiks oli luua (autovaba) linn, kus ühest otsast teise on võimalik 20 minutiga jalgsi/jalgrattaga jõuda. Praegu tuleb hoonetele ligi pääsemiseks ronida praktiliselt läbi metsa. Giidil olid kaasas ka tolleaegsed pildid, mis andsid aimu, kuidas kõik varem välja nägi. Sarnasusi neilt piltidelt oli praegusega raske leida.
Peale 2011. aastal kokku varisenud koolimaja, on väidetavalt keelatud viibida sealsetes hoonetes. Meie käisime sellegipoolest paaris kohas sees ning kipun arvama, et privaat - ja mitmepäevastel tuuridel saab ilmselt ka rohkematesse kohtadesse (võimalik et ka kortermajadesse) siseneda - aga see on kõigest spekulatsioon.
Üllataval kombel on tsoonis ka kiirusepiirang, 40 km/h, aga sellest ei pea keegi kinni.

Pripyat, finally. First, a small stop by the sign, talk/introduction of the red forest and then city itself. I was expecting to recognize it instantly, having watched thousands of photos and hundreds of movie clips/documentaries, but jeez, I couldn't even understand where the first stop was, no buildings were clearly visible. Gone were the big and spacious streets, it all looked like a jungle. It was definitely worse than I had expected.
The guide said that Pripyat was supposed to be a model city. Its architect had in mind a small, car free city which one could walk/bicycle from one end to another in 20 minutes. You'd have to walk through a forest to get near any of the buildings in the present day. The guide also had some images of the way Pripyat once was, but nothing even looked remotely similar.
After a school collapsed in 2011, it's no longer allowed to go inside the buildings in Pripyat. Despite that we still got to go into couple of places and I have a suspicious feeling that during private or multi-day tours, you could maybe even get into the apartment buildings - but that's just a theory.
Surprisingly there is a speed limit of 40 km/h in the zone, but no one really abides by that law.

Sparkling water/root beer vending machines which intrigued our foreign friends when the guide said that getting a drink meant using a shared glass (no plastic personal cups) that was always there. USSR didn't support consumerism.

Sadam. Vastaskaldal olevat olnud rüüstajate tõeline paradiis, sest sinna viidi Pripyati elanike isiklikud asjad. Esialgsel evakuatsioonipäeval jäeti elanikele mulje, et linna tullakse tagasi ning paluti kaasa võtta vaid hädavajalikud asjad. Tagasitulekut muidugi enam ei juhtunud ja suurem enamus ei näinud oma vara enam kunagi. Sellegipoolest anti elanikele võimalus hiljem naasta ning võtta endisest kodust ehteid, fotosid ja näiteks raha - väiksemaid asju, mis kontrolliti kõik kiirgusemõõtjaga üle. Infot sellisest võimalusest väga avalikult siiski ei levitatud ning lõppkokkuvõttes tulid oma väärtuslikumate asjade järele vaid umbes 40% elanikest. Ilmselt olid selleks hetkeks linnast üle käinud ka esimesed rüüstajate lained ning rahalist väärtust omav vara oli ammuseks pihta pandud ja Kiievis maha müüdud.

A small harbour. The officials took all the belongings of the people to the opposing shore, which made that place a goldmine for the looters. On the evacuation day the locals were only asked to take the most important things and were left with the impression that they would return once the danger had passed. But as we all know, they were never allowed to return and most of them never got to see their possessions ever again. Nevertheless the government still made it possible to return for the smaller belongings (jewelry, money, photos) which were all checked for radiation. Unfortunately this information wasn't that widely spread and thus only 40% of people came back to collect some of their things. I'm not sure how much time had passed until they could come back, but I'm certain that by then the city had had its first waves of looters, who had stripped everything of value and sold them in Kiev.

Hotel Polissija was once one of the most prestigious hotels in the former Soviet Union. It was difficult the get a room there and waiting lists were couple of months long.

Pood, mida külastasid inimesed ka Pripyatist palju kaugemalt. Seal poes oli kaupa rohkem ja kõike oli ka kohe saada, tõeline unelm tollasele nõukogude inimesele. Seetõttu tasus külastus ära ka mitmekümnete kilomeetrite kauguselt.

A grocery store which was visited even by people who lived much farther away from Pripyat. This store had more produce that was available right away - all sounded like a dream for the ordinary Soviet person of that time and that's why it was worth a visit even if you were not a local.

Ja siin loomulikult üks kõige äratuntavamaid Pripyati sümboleid, lõbustuspargi vaateratas. Mõned hetked hiljem oli seal rahvast juba oluliselt rohkem, seega erilist kunsti selliste massidega teha ei õnnestu. Ka selle pildi jaoks pidin enda grupist ette jooksma, kuid arvestades olustikku ja võimalusi, võin jäädvustatuga rahule jääda.
Lisaks meie jutlevale giidile, oli kaasas ka teine giid, kes inglise keelt ei rääkinud ning kes ilmselt hoidis silma peal, et keegi omapäi seiklema ei läheks. Mees võttis ühel hetkel palja käega vaateratta kollasest kapslist kinni ja lükkas selle liikuma nii, et katuselohku kogunenud vihmavesi uhke kosena alla sadas. Vaateratta peal on ka kuumkoht, kus giidid iga kord radioaktiivsust mõõdavad ning ilmselt omakeskis edetabeleid teevad.
Vaateratta läheduses asusid postid, mille vahele oli veetud okastraat. Giidi sõnul oli tegemist taaskordse fotolavastusega, sest okastraat oli uuem ning orignaalis seda seal polnud. Selliste asjade osas tekib küsimus, et kui see ala on nüüdisajal nii hästi valvatud, siis kuidas jalutab mingi vend okastraadirulliga sisse ja hakkab sellest fotosid tegema?

And here is one of the most recognizable symbols of Pripyat, the ferris wheel in the amusement park. Some moments later the field was filled with people, so you can't really relax and take your sweet time trying to compose a shot. I also had to run ahead of my group, but taking all the tricky elements into consideration, I'm quite pleased with the outcome.
In addition to our main guide, there was another guy with us who didn't speak English and was probably also keeping an eye out for the ones who wanted to wander around. One moment the guy pushed the yellow pod with his bare hands, making the rain water from the dented roof fall down like a waterfall. The ferris wheel is also a hotspot where the guides measure and keep track of the biggest readings they've gotten.
There were couple of concrete poles with barbed wire between them near the ferris wheel. Our guide said that someone had fabricated this for a photo-op, because the barbed wire was definitely newer and wasn't originally there. Things like these make me wonder how is it possible for someone to walk into a guarded area with a roll of barbed wire and start taking photos there?

See on lasteaed Tšeburaška, mis oli väidetavalt grupile üheks boonuskülastuseks. Võimalik, et see oli tõsi - piiripunktis kaotatud aja kompenseerimiseks, kuid võib-olla öeldakse sama paljudele gruppidele. Igal juhul minult nurisemist kindlasti ei kuule, tegemist oli väga unikaalse kogemusega.

This is a kindergarten called Cheburashka which was said to be a bonus visit for our group. Maybe it's true, to make up for the lost time at the checkpoint, but maybe they say that to all the groups. Anyway no complaints whatsoever, it was such a unique experience.

Ja ka siin on teoreetiliselt teine boonuskülastus, samuti üks äratuntavamaid sisevaateid Pripyatist. Giidi sõnul kasutati ujulat tööliste poolt veel varastel 90ndatelgi ning mälusopist meenub, et olen sama juttu ka eelnevalt kuulnud.

And this is another theoretical bonus visit, plus one of the most known interior views in Pripyat. Our guide said that this pool was still in use for the workers in the early 90s, which is something I think I've heard before.

Pripyatist väljudes peatusime ka tuletõrjujate endi poolt loodud mälestusmärgil, millega mälestatakse kõiki, kes päästeprotsessis-operatsioonis osalesid, kannatasid ja hukkusid. Leaving Pripyat we had a stop at the memorial that was made by the firefighters for all those people who worked and sacrificed their lives to save others. Since the firefighters are not artists, they had no idea how to make some of the parts, how to make people proportionate and so they improvised (used real helmets, equipment etc) and created something from their hearts. It's definitely one of the most heart-warming memorials, which you can't really be critical of. I personally believe it's beautiful.

Üks suurimaid unistuste reisisihte on nüüd täidetud, Tšernobõli tuur tehtud ja "sertifikaat" on käes. Viimane on ka juba raamitud :) Postitus tuleb kahes osas ning on üpris pildirohke.
Loomulikult ei saa eeldada, et sellise lühikese tuuri käigus on võimalik saada täielik ülevaade Tšernobõli tuumakatastroofi koguulatusest. Ala on siiski meeletult suur ning näiteks seda, millist mõju külaelu väljasuremisele see kõik osutas Valgevene saastatud piirkondades, ei ole samuti võimalik kuidagi hoomata (pluss sündimata laste geneetiliste väärarengute hüppeline kasv). Samuti on tegemist vastuolulise turismisihtkohaga, mida ma tahaks loota, et suur enamus ei võta kui "ägedat tondilinna, kus on tore Instagrami jaoks poseerida". Tegemist on siiski ühe suurima lähimineviku tragöödiaga Ida-Euroopa ajaloos, mida isegi peale 32 aasta möödumist ei saa kuidagi kergelt võtta. Kuna ka Eesti ja eestlased olid sellest ühel või teisel viisil mõjutatud (tuumasade jõudis tuulega meile ning siinseid mehi saadeti Tšernobõli likvidaatoriteks), olen tundnud alati suurt austust kõigi nende vastu, kes aitasid halvima ära hoida. Ja see õnnestus neil oma elu ja tervise hinnaga. Praeguseks on teada, et kõik nende meetodid ei olnud alati efektiivsed ning osad püüded tegid rohkem kahju kui kasu, kuid tuleb meeles pidada, et tegemist oli esialgse sarnase katastroofiga, mille puhul polnud õiget kriisiolukorra käitumist ette nähtud. Omamoodi positiivselt rajas see edaspidiseks teadmistepagasi, millest on kasu olnud ka näiteks Fukushima õnnetuse puhul.
Soovin siiralt, et sarnast olukorda ei peaks enam keegi läbi elama, sest ettekujutamatult hirmus oleks jätta maha kõik, näha oma lähedasi suremas kiirelt või aeglaselt piineldes ning samal ajal elada teadmatuses, kuidas on sinu enda tervis sellest tulevikus mõjutatud.

One of my biggest dreams is now fulfilled, Chernobyl tour is done, certificate received and framed :) Post will come in two parts and hopefully I manage to cover everything.
It's impossible to assume that you're able to fully grasp the whole reach of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster during this small tour. The contaminated area is huge and they don't even mention how many villages were left and abandoned in Belarus (plus the genetic disorders that followed in unborn children). It's also a very controversial travel destination, which I hope the majority of the visitors don't just consider as a "cool ghost city to take Instagram photos of". Because, in fact, it was a major catastrophe in the near past of Eastern Europe and should not be taken lightly even after 32 years. Since Estonia and Estonians were also affected by one way or another (the nuclear fallout landed here as well and they sent our men to work as liquidators), I've always felt a huge gratitude towards the people who didn't let the worst happen, sacrificing their lives while doing so. Sure, some of their methods were not helpful, some made the situation even a bit worse, but you have to remember that no one had any experience or instructions on how to manage a crisis situation like this. What's most important, they succeeded. And in a way it has helped to create a manual for future disasters, like Fukushima.
I sincerely hope that a similar situation never happens, because it truly is unfathomable to imagine leaving your belongings and seeing your loved ones dying fast or slowly and painfully and not knowing what the future might bring onto you.

Tsooni toimub nii ühe - kui mitmepäevaseid tuure. Ühepäevastel külastatakse küll vähem kohti, kuid alustuseks tundus see täiesti piisav valik olevat. Hinnaks umbes 97 EUR ning selle paketi sees oli nii dosimeeter kui lõuna Tšernobõli tuumaelektrijaama sööklas. Samuti sai dosimeetri lisaraha eest eraldi rentida juhul, kui seda esialgses paketis polnud valitud. Tõele au andes ei ole dosimeeter tegelikult eriti vajalik. Üldjuhul näidatakse "kuumkohad" (eriti radioaktiivsed punktid) giidi enda poolt ära ning muul ajal üürgavad dosimeetrid niisama (kui näidik on üle 0,3). Iseenesest saab lävendit sel ka tõsta, kuid üldiselt istus see mul enamuse ajast ikkagi kuskil seljakoti põhjas.
Meie grupis oli 11 inimest ning esindatud olid ameeriklased, sakslased, argentiinlased ning meie, eestlased. Sõit Kiievist 30km tsooni võis kesta ehk ligi 2 tundi, mille jooksul näidati dokumentaalfilmi. Üldiselt olen kõikvõimalikud selleteemalised dokumentaalid varasemalt läbi vaadanud, kuid seda polnudki näinud ning seetõttu oli eriti kahju, et lõpuni filmi ei näidatud (jõudsime enne "piirikontrolli").

Piirikontroll või nö kontrollpunkt oli koht, mida pildistada ei võinud, sarnaselt tollile. Seal kontrolliti näpuga järge ajades meie dokumente ja vaadati näkku ka. Tuurile registreerides tuli edastada info oma passi kohta (NB! ID-kaart ei ole aktsepteeritud) - seerianumber, väljastamise kuupäev ja dokumendi aegumiskuupäev. Kui seal oleks olnud mingi viga, poleks meid ilmselt läbi lastud. Enne Kiievist sõidu alustamist kontrollis ka giid ise igaks juhuks passi numbrid üle, sest tema sõnul on tsoon umbes nagu riik riigis. Samuti väärib märkimist, et alla 18-aastastele on see reis keelatud.

Paraku oli Tšernobõlis olnud just suuremat sorti torm ning ilma elektrita ei saanud kohalikud ametnikud vajalikku infot tulijate osas kätte. Sealne seisak võttis umbes tunnikese, kuid tavaliselt peaks "üle piiri" ilmselt veidi kiiremini saama. Ootamise ajal jõudsid kohale ka teised bussid ja grupid ning neid oli üllatavalt palju. Kui esialgu arvasin, et sinna sõidab ehk 3-4 marsatäit inimesi, oli seal lõpuks rahvast ja autosid oluliselt rohkem. Kohalikke, kes tsooni sõitsid, oli samuti palju, nemad said sisse käepigistuse alusel.
Muideks, selles kontrollpunktis oli ka ala ainuke merch-putka, kus sai osta pastakaid, võtmehoidjaid, magneteid, mütse, särke, kruuse, gaasimaske jne. Ilmselt peatutakse seal ka tagasiteel, seega kui esialgu jäävad suveniirid ostmata, on see viga võimalik hiljem parandada.

Teistes kontrollpunktides dokumente enam ei kontrollita, küll aga tuleb minekul läbida üks radiatsioonikontroll enne sööklasse sisenemist ning tagasiteel on sarnaseid kontrolle kaks. Giidi sõnul pidid olema eriliselt saastunud, et esimesest kontrollist mitte läbi saada. Teine kontroll on aga rangem ning seal on tal olnud juhuseid küll, et mõni osaline seda ei läbi. Seda, mis nendega siis tehakse, ma täpselt ei tea. Ilmselt on kõige enam saastunud jalanõud, mida siis üritatakse puhastada. Kõige ohtlikumad on muda ja sammal, millel nad ei soovita tatsuda ning huvitaval kombel on just päikesepaistelisel ilmal radiatsioon suurem (ilmselt tolmu pärast). Kuna meie külastuspäeval pidi tugevalt sadama terve päeva ning eelnevalt oli olnud ka torm, oli pinnas peamiselt mudane ning seega "puhtal" maal võimalik käia ei olnudki.

Lisaks on neil koduleheküljel kirjas juhised, mida tsoonis teha ei või ja kuidas peab riietuma. Näiteks on keelatud juua alkoholi / olla alkoholijoobes, suitsetada (v.a kontrollpunktid - seda põhjusel, et tuleoht on suur) ning panna oma asju/kotte maapinnale. Riietus peab katma kogu keha, s.t ei tohi olla seelikuid, lühikesi pükse, sandaale, lühikeste varrukatega särke. Mingil põhjusel olid keelatud ka retuusid, kuid sellegipoolest nägin ma mitmeid neiusid retuusides ning nende osas ei pilgutanud keegi silmagi (või kui pilgutas, siis ainult heas mõttes).

Kiievist algab sõit kell 8 ning sööklasse jõudsime umbes 15 paiku, seega soovitan soojalt oma näksimine ja veepudel kaasa võtta. Sööklas on toit enam-vähem muutumatuna püsinud 30+ aastat, tegemist oli tavalise tolleaegse töölise lõunaga, kus oli salatitaldrik (peet, porgand, kapsas), pearoog, 2 klaasi morssi ja keeks. Giid rõhutas, et sööklatädide pildistamine on rangelt keelatud, kuid kõike muud - interjööri, toitu jne võib vabalt jäädvustada.

Koeri leidub tsoonis palju ning nad kõik on märgistatud kõrvarõngaga. Giidi sõnul pidid nad olema väga sõbralikud ning esmapilgul see nii ka tundus olevat. Eelarvamused mutanthuntidest ja kolme peaga metsloomadest, pidid olema kõvasti ülepaisutatud. Geenimuudatused küll on, kuid need avalduvad veidi vähem "põnevamal" viisil, näiteks on sellistel ämblikel võrgu kudumine veidi teistsugune jne.

It is possible to take one day or multiple day trip to the exclusion zone. You get to visit more places (as seen on the certificate), but for starters I think one day trip is sufficient. Price for that was about 97 EUR, including the rental of a dosimeter plus a lunch at the nuclear power plant canteen. You could also rent a dosimeter on the spot, if it wasn't included for the package and price you paid initially. But to be honest, you don't really need one. Generally the hotspots are shown by the guides and for the rest of time, the dosimeters just make an annoying sound for anything over 0,3. You could change the threshold, but mine ended up in the bottom of the bag for the most time anyway.

There were 11 people in our group, represented nations were the Americans, Germans, Argentinians and us, Estonians. Car ride from Kiev to the zone took about 2 hours during which they showed a documentary about the incident. I've seen most movies that are freely available, but I hadn't seen this one, so I was particularly sad that we reached the checkpoint before the ending of the movie.

Checkpoint is a bit like a border control, we weren't allowed to take photos of the area. They checked our passports very carefully and information about your passport was something that was first asked when booking the trip online. You had to provide the serial number, release date and the expiration date of your passport. If there would've been a mistake of some sort, they may not have let you in. Before the departure from Kiev our guide actually checked our passports as well, because as he said the zone is a bit like a country in a country with its own border control. It's also worth a mention that this tour is forbidden for anyone under the age of 18.

Unfortunately there had been a big storm in Chernobyl, so the place had no electricity and the local officials didn't have the information about people who were supposed to come on that day. The delay lasted for about an hour, but usually it wouldn't take so long. While waiting, the other buses and tours started arriving as well and to my surprise there were a lot of people. At first I though that maybe 3-4 small vans would be going to the area, but in reality it was much more crowded than I had expected. Locals passing the checkpoint were let in with a handshake with the patrol officer.

By the way, this checkpoint has the only merch-kiosk of the whole area. Stuff on sale was the usual type; pens, magnets, keychains, hats, shirts, mugs, gas masks, etc. The van probably stops on the way back there as well, so if you don't buy a souvenir on your way in, you will get a second chance.
There is no passport check in the next checkpoints, but there is a radiation control before entering the canteen and also two similar checks on the way back. Our guide said that you'd have to be really contaminated for not being able to pass the first check on the way back. But it's not uncommon for people not to pass the second (more strict) one. I'm not quite sure what is done with those people, I guess the shoes are probably the most likely to be contaminated, so I believe they'd try to rinse them off maybe. It's not recommended to walk on moss or mud and interestingly the radiation is much higher on sunnier days (because of the dust). Since we went on a rainy day and there had been a storm as well, the ground was nothing but mud.

Additionally they have instructions on their web page about what you can or can't do in the zone, and what is the dresscode. For instance, it's prohibited to drink alcohol, be drunk; smoke (except for the checkpoints, because the danger of wildfires is very high) and place your bags/belongings on the ground. Clothing must cover you fully, it's not allowed to wear open shoes, dresses and short-sleeved T-shirts. For some reason leggings were also on the naughty list, although I saw women wearing them and no one bat an eye (or if they did, it must've been a flirty wink)...so I guess leggings should be good.

The trip from Kiev starts at 8 AM and we arrived in the canteen about 3PM, so I highly suggest taking snacks and a water bottle with you. The food in the canteen has been pretty much she same for the last 30+ years, it was a usual worker's lunch. It consisted of a plate of salads (beet, carrot, cabbage), main course, 2 glasses of juice and a small cake. The guide said it's forbidden to take photos of the canteen workers (didn't specify why), although it's okay to take photos of the interior and the food. Maybe the workers got tired of people putting their cameras in the face and that is totally understandable that it gets old real fast.

There are many dogs (all marked with an earring) in the zone and according to our guide, they are all very friendly. As far as I saw, I can confirm that. There is prejudice and folk tales of three-headed mutants etc, but although the genetical structure may have been changed, it shows its effect in a much more "boring" way, for instance the spiders make their web differently and so on.

First stop at a little village called Zalissya. You'd probably see a lot more in early spring/fall, but since I was prepared for a lot worse, I'm quite pleased with these images. Most stops got many groups at once, so it was difficult to get a completely human-free scene.

Need pildid peaks olema tehtud juba Kopachi külas, mis on eriline selle poolest, et siin eksperimenteeriti majade matmisega. Selleks kaevati auk, maja lükati sinna sisse ja peale pandi hunnik mulda. Nii loodeti vähendada radiatsiooni, kuid tegelikkuses paiskas säärane teguviis seda veel rohkem õhku (ja samuti põhjavette) - kuna radiatsioon on maapinna sees, siis kaevamine ja tolmutamine mõjus vastupidiselt loodetule. Tänapäeval ongi näha vaid maapinnal kõrgemad kumerused, mis on jäänuk kunagistest majadest. Vaid lasteaed seisab veel ning seal sees saab samuti ringi vaadata.

These images are of the village of Kopachi. It is the only village that they tried to bulldoze and bury into the ground. For that they dug a hole, shoved the house into it and put dirt all over. They hoped to diminish the contamination, but instead they increased it even more. Nowadays you can only see mounds and small hills which are the remnants of the houses that have been buried. Only the kindergarten is standing still and you can have a look inside as well.

Tõsi ta on, et sellised mänguasjad on pigem sinna "istutatud", et saada fotode jaoks mingit põnevamat-dramaatilisemat kaadrit. Hoolimata sellest, et sama asja on nüüdseks ilmselt tuhanded pildistanud, ei lähe ju sellisest vaatepildist ilma klõpsu tegemata mööda. Paraku oli ruum võrdlemisi hämar ning seetõttu sai ISO lakke löödud ja seega teravusega parimad lood ei ole.

Militaarala, kus on Duga-1 radar. Asub peateelt mõned kilomeetrid eemal. Giidi sõnul kasutati selle peitmiseks spioonide eest erinevaid taktikaid. Esmalt prooviti jätta muljet, et tee lõpus asub lastelaager. Selleks tehti peatee lähedusse bussipeatus, millel olid multifilmitegelaste joonistused, et oleks selge - edasi ei tule midagi huviväärset. Samal ajal oleks igale spioonile olnud arusaadav, et asi on kahtlane, sest tee, mis sinna viis, oli betoonist ning võis vaid tähendada seda, et mööda seda sõidavad rasked sõjaväemasinad. Lisaks sellele istutati sinna männimets, kus puud pandi üksteisele võimalikult lähestikku. Eesmärgiks oli kiirem kasv võimalikult kõrgeks. Teoreetiliselt oleks pidanud keegi hiljem need puud üksteisest kaugemale istutama (et nad oma elujõu säilitaks), aga selle etapini ei jõutudki. Ma isegi ei kujuta ette, kuidas nad seda reaalselt teinud oleks, sest tuhandete täiskasvanud puude ümberistutamine kõlab nagu...palju tööd.
Samuti asus alas 3 kontrollpunkti. Esimeses paluti rahumeelselt piirkonnast lahkuda. Kui seda eirati, siis teises ja kolmandas punktis oli luba ette teatamata sissetungija maha lasta.
Hoolimata nendest pingutustest ei jäänud radar maailmale märkamatuks, sest kostus oma koputusega igale poole. Sellest ka tema hüüdnimi, vene rähn. Venelased eitasid radari olemasolu ning alles peale satelliidipiltide esitamist, pakkusid välja uue variandi - tegemist on ilmaennustusjaamaga.
Duga-1 radarit on mõeldud ka õhku lasta, aga kuna tegemist on niivõrd massiivse ehitisega, võib selle õhkamine tekitada maavärina, mille võimalikud ohud ei pruugi veel päris ilmsed olla.

Military base for the Duga-1 radar. It is located a few kilometers away from the main road. According to our guide, there were many ways how the Soviets tried to hide it from foreign spies. At first they tried to make it look like a children's camp. For that they put a bus stop with cartoon characters near the main road, where you take the turn to the military base, so it would look like nothing interesting was at the end of the turn. At the same time, a trained spy would've known that a concrete road could only mean one thing - heavy military machinery. Additionally they planted a pine forest in a way where the trees were very close to each other. That was for the purpose of making them grow higher faster. Phase 2 was to plant them further away from each other, to give them space and provide more nutrients, but they never got to doing that. I don't think I can even imagine how they would've completed that, having someone replant thousands and thousands of grown trees?
There were also 3 checkpoints in the area. In the first one you were politely asked to leave. If you were not wise enough to walk away and continued, military personnel were allowed to shoot you without notifying in the 2nd and 3rd checkpoint.
Despite their efforts, the radar didn't go unnoticed by the world - the knocking sound it made, was heard by pretty much everyone. Thus the nickname, Russian Woodpecker. The Russians denied having such a radar when asked and only after being presented by satellite photos of it, they came up with a new version - a weather forecast station.
They have thought about blowing the radar up, but since it is massive, it could result in an earthquake. And that itself could bring more unseen and unnecessary consequences.

Electronic equipment that has been stripped of anything of value. We also went to the Duga-1 server room building which showcased the work of the looters. Wires on the wall had been burned (the paint was peeling off like crazy and the guide also said that this room had a specific smell to it, although I didn't detect it myself), in order to get rid of the isolation and get quick access to the copper.

Kiev, Ukraine: Pecherska Lavra, Motherland Monument, Golden Gate

Vaatamisväärsused Kiievis jätkuvad. Päris täiuslikus kronoloogilises järjekorras need ei ole, kuid sobivad ühte postitusse siiski kokku.
Esmalt siis Pecherska Lavra, kus on kirikud ja usuhooned. Suure kaameraga pildistamise eest tuleb maksta ning summa ei olnudki kõige odavam, kui ei eksi, siis 200 UAH (6,47 EUR) pluss sissepääs 30 UAH. Kui on soov telefoniga pildistada, siis see on tasuta. Igal juhul on pildistamine keelatud aga hoonete sees, kuid nägin paljusid, kes sellest keelust siiski üle astusid. Teist korda enam sellist summat ei maksaks ning jääks samuti telefoni peale. Samas ei kontrollinud alas keegi, kas olen kaamera kasutamise eest pileti ostnud, seega ilmselt loodetakse inimeste aususele või siis juhtus olema see päev, kus jäin turvameestele märkamatuks.
Ala sees on osadel väiksematel muuseumitel oma piletid, mille eest tuleb eraldi tasuda. Hindadega on võimalik tutvuda ka nende kodulehel.
Üheks tasuta kohaks on koopad, kus on klaaskirstude sees erinevad mumifitseeritud pühakud/mungad. Koobastes on palju inimesi ning on kitsas ja palav, seega tõsistel klaustrofoobikutel tasub enne sisenemist asja veidi kaaluda. Enda kogemuse järgi oli see siiski talutav.
Arvestada tuleb ka sellega, et naisi ilma peakatte ja pika seelikuta sinna ei lubata. Pikad püksid ei ole samuti sobilikud. Kui on soov seda kohta külastada, siis sissepääsude juures on tasuta laenutamiseks pikad hõlmikseelikud. Koobastes oli palju tõsiusklikke, kes pühakute kirste suudlesid ning palvetasid. Võrdlemisi huvitav vaatepilt, seda eriti usuleigetele eestlastele. Pühakud ise on kaetud ning vaid mõnel on riiete peal näha kuivanud ploomi tekstuuriga käsi. Väiksemate/kartlikemate lastega külastajad ilmselt jätaks selle koha vahele.

First we have the Pecherska Lavra that is basically an old monastery, filled with religion and churches. Using a camera costs you 200 UAH (6,47 EUR), plus the entry fee which is 30 UAH. Taking photos with your phone is free. Although neither is allowed inside the buildings, there were many people who still took photos inside. Looking back, I wouldn't pay that much again and I'd just stick to my phone. Surprisingly no one ever asked to see my ticket for using the camera, so I guess they're relying on the honesty of people or maybe I just didn't catch the attention of security guards.
There are smaller museums and buildings with separate entry fees, you can read more about them on their website.
The caves where the mummified saints/monks are buried in glass coffins, were free. There were many people, the space was quite tight and it got quite hot as well, so if you are severely claustrophobic, you'd might think twice before entering. Personally I found it to be tolerable.
Women are also not allowed in without a head scarf and a long skirt. Long trousers are not acceptable as well. Fortunately there are free skirts you can lend, which tie around like a big apron. There are many seriously religious people in the caves that pray and kiss the coffins. That should be quite a sight for any religion-free person. The saints are mostly covered under some garments, only some have their dried plum-looking hand visible. Visitors with very small children should maybe skip that area.

Ja siin ta on, võrreldes eelneva pildiga ei arvaks, et tegemist oli sama päevaga, aga peale sombust hommikut, tuli lõpuks ka päike välja. And here she is! Compared to the previous image, you wouldn't say it's the same day but fortunately a gloomy morning turned into a sunny day. Another protip, don't approach the statue from the riverside, your feet will be dead from all the stairs. Much nicer entry is on the other side, where the entry to Pecherska Lavra is too. The statue is just one part of a bigger memorial, there are also tanks, war machinery and statues of soldiers and the people of Ukraine. I believe there is also a (history) museum nearby, but we skipped that.

Kiev, Ukraine: Landscsape alley, St Andrew's Church

Jätkub teine osa Kiievi seiklustest. Viimane postitus lõppes pildiga, mis oli tehtud teel maastikualleele. Kohta otsides suutsime veidike eksida ja kaldusime kursilt kõrvale, natuke mägisemale alale, kust avanes kena vaade eesolevale jalutuskäigule. Kui keegi lugejatest satub kunagi samasse kohta, siis mägironimist koha leidmiseks vaja teha ei ole - pöörduge tänavale tagasi :)
Maastikuallee (kas see just õige tõlge on, on küsitav) on tänav, kus asuvad mosaiigiga kaunistatud kujud (fantaasia)loomadest, inimestest jms. Tänav iseenesest väga pikk ei ole, kuid see-eest saab sealt edasi jalutada St Andrew's kirikuni (eestikeelset vastet ei hakka pakkuma igaks juhuks) ning sealt omakorda tuleb pikem langus mööda tänavat, kus on end sisse sättinud suur osa suveniirimüüjatest.
Mosaiik pidi olema Ukrainas (või ka üldisemalt endises NVSLs) oluline sümbol inimeste ühtsusest: üks tükk on tühine, kuid kõik tükid koos moodustavad terviku ja toimivad efektiivselt.

Second part of our Kiev adventures. Last post ended with a photo which was taken on our way to landscape alley. We managed to get lost while searching for it, and ended up on a hill with a nice view towards the area we ended up going to. So if you're planning on going there as well, know that you don't have to climb a hill to get there, return to the street and look for a better way :)
Landscape alley is a street of various sculptures of (fantasy) animals covered in mosaic. The street itself is not that long but it leads to the St Andrew's church and from there to the street where many of the souvenir sellers are.
Mosaic was said to be an important symbol in Ukraine (or generally in the former Soviet Union), representing united people: one piece can't do much, but all together they create a whole.

Kiev, Ukraine: first night, subway, cemetery

Maandusime Kiievi lennujaamas 28. juunil ning sealt Uberdasime oma airbnb pesasse, mis asus Pecherska metroopeatuse lähedal. Õhtul jõudsime teha esimese eine Bestia pubis - tegemist oli ühele inglismaa jalgpallurile pühendatud kohaga, kus paar õhtut hiljem nautisime seal temaatikale kohaselt jalgpalli MMi. Väike ringkäik sai tehtud ka kesklinnas ning päikeseloojanguga linnapildid ongi esimesed, mis siin postituses nähtavad on.
Mida öelda Kiievi/Ukraina kohta üldiselt? Kui alustada algusest, siis turvavööd pole seal ilmselt kohustuslikud. Sellest andis aimu meie esimene Uber, milleks oli Dacia (etteruttavalt võin öelda, et meie kogemuse põhjal on 75% Uberitest Ukrainas Daciad: 3/4) ning kus olid küll turvavööd, aga mitte...pesasid...kuhu...neid...panna.
Minu jaoks meeldivalt nostalgilisena oli autopark kohati nõuka, südant soojendasid taksosiltidega Ladad - ikka teenivad ja saavad hakkama. Kiirusepiirangud on pigem soovitused, sest tihti juhtus, et kellelgi oli vaja kuskile kiiresti jõuda.
Metroosõit maksis 5 UAH (0,16 EUR), trollisõit 4 UAH (0,13 EUR). Kiievis kasutasime peamiselt trolli ja metrood. Trollibussides olid jätkuvalt kontrolörid, kellelt oli võimalik pilet osta ja vanamoodsalt komposteerida (või nagu nemad ütlesid, valideerida). Kui kontrolöri polnud, siis sai pileti osta ka trollijuhilt. Trollide väljumisaegadel pole tallinlasele tuttavat ajatablood, selleks oli antud vaid väga lakooniline vahemik - troll tuleb selles ajavahemikus x intervalli jooksul (näiteks hommikul ajavahemikul 6-10 on intervall 13-29 minutit). Positiivse üllatusena oli trollides ka WiFi ning kõlas ka inglise keeles peale loetud tekst, mis selgitas, kuidas piletit osta jm kasulikku.
Kindlasti tuleb ära mainida ka kerjused. Ausalt ei osanud arvata, et Ukrainas neid nii palju on. Kõige šokeerivamaks olid minu jaoks naised, kes suure kõhuga seisid suvalisel tänavanurgal, käsi ees. Nad nägid välja nagu tavalised naised, aga ometi seisid nad seal nii raha küsides. Ma ei mäleta, et oleksin kuskil midagi sellist näinud. Samas pole ma viimasel ajal meeletult palju reisinud ning võib-olla on ajad muutunud.
Kiievis on populaarsed väiksed aiad ja piirded - kõikvõimalikud asjad on metalse äärega ümbristatud. Väga tavaline on ka see, et need on värvitud lipuvärvidesse sinine ja kollane.
Hindadest. Bensiinihind oli linnas 30 UAH kandis, mis teeb liitri hinnaks umbes euro. Linnast väljas nägin silte 26 UAH. Suvalises supermarketis esimene odavam viin maksis 80 UAH ehk 2,59 EUR. Vana Tallinn on end murdnud Ukrainasse ning asub vähemalt ühes baariketis kenasti shottide menüüs. Samuti leiab seda poest ning seal on Vana Tallinna kreemlikööri hinnaks 200 UAH ehk 6,49 EUR. Suitsud maksavad keskmiselt 31 UAH, ehk samuti umbes euro (kõige odavamad olid 21 UAH ~ 0,68 EUR). Ilmselt oleks pilt veelgi teisem mõnes linnaäärses supermarketis, aga sinna me paraku ei sattunud.
Väljas söömine - kui tahad väga odavalt hakkama saada, on see võimalik. Kuna meie kasutasime toidukohtade soovitusteks Foursquare'i, siis seal võisid osad olla veidi kallimad kui tavapärased odavamad söökla-tüüpi kohad. Minu vene keele oskus on suht algeline, enam-vähem saan lihtsast vestlusest aru, kuid ukraina keeles olevad menüüd tekitasid vahepeal tõsiseid küsimusi: "Mis asi see nüüd on". Õnneks on ka seal võimalik kindla peale välja minna, kui tunned vähemalt söögi kategooria ning ühe koostisosa ära. Samuti leidus kohti, kus menüüd olid piltidega, mis tegi asja veel lihtsamaks.
Kuld/hõbeehted: tavalised ketipoed seal erilisest soodukast ei rõkka. Väiksemad kohad müüavad asju odavamalt ning mõned hõbeehted leidsid sealt ka tee minuga koju.

Kuna kogu reisi vältel käisime läbi päris palju kohti, siis seekord proovin juttu/selgitust kirjutada pigem piltide vahele ning jaotada postitused enam-vähem mingi loogika järgi mitmesse osasse.

We landed at Kiev airport on the 28th of June and Ubered to our airbnb home which was near the Pecherska subway station. In the evening we had our first local meal at Bestia pub - dedicated to one of UK's football players. We also had a small walk around the city center and the sunset photos you see are the first ones I took in Ukraine.
What to say about Kiev/Ukraine? From the very first Uber ride (which was a Dacia and since 3 out of 4 Ubers we took were Dacias, I can safely say that 75% of Ukraine's Ubers are Dacias) we realized that seat belts are not obligatory in this country - they are there, but no one is using them. In our Dacia we couldn't even attach them to anything, there were no slots for them.
Overall, the cars had a wide variety of fancy "I don't even know what that is" to "yes, good old Soviet machinery at work". It was cool to see Lada taxis still working and I wish we had taken one up for a ride. Speed limits are recommendations at best.
Metro ticket was 5 UAH (0,16 EUR), trolley 4 UAH (0,13 EUR). We mostly used trolleys and the subway in Kiev. They still have (mostly) ladies selling tickets on the trolleys and old-time ticket punching machines. You can also buy a ticket from the driver, in case the lady is currently off work. Transport in Tallinn has a timetable and specific times for the line. In Kiev, that was not the case: i.e in a timeframe of 6-10 AM you could expect to catch a trolley in a 13-29 minute interval. As a positive surprise, the trolleys were equipped with free Wifi and the station announcements (plus other useful information) was played out in English as well.
One thing I can't get over is the amount of beggars on the streets. I saw couple of pregnant women, just standing in the street with their hand reached ahead. To be honest, I don't think I've ever seen something like this before, they looked just like normal people with normal looking clothes and yet here they were. Maybe times have changed and it's common in other parts of Europe as well, I don't know.
Barriers and fences are very popular in Kiev, there are metal barriers guarding pretty much everything. And many of them are in yellow-blue combinations, which are the colors of the flag of Ukraine. As a matter of fact, you could see a lot of nationalistic elements and sense how proud they are of that.
About prices. Petrol was about 30 UAH (roughly 1 EUR), in the countryside I saw it even for 26 UAH. Just a basic supermarket vodka sold for 80 UAH (2,59 EUR). Cream liqueur Vana Tallinn is in the menu of a pub in Kiev and it's also an ingredient of couple of shots. But it's also available in the store for 200 UAH (6,49 EUR). Cigarettes are 31 UAH (~1 EUR) and the cheapest I saw were 21 UAH (0,68 EUR). I believe the prices would go even lower outside of city center in a bigger shopping mall, but we just didn't have time to go there.
Eating out. It's possible to go cheap there as well. We used Foursquare, which tends to have a bit more trendy and pricier places, but we still managed to find some quite affordable ones as well. If you'd skip Foursquare, I believe you wouldn't spend that much on food at all. My knowledge of Russian is pretty basic - I can understand a simple conversation so-so. Menus in Ukrainian on the other hand, made me scratch my head sometimes. But I think you're still good to go, if you recognize the category of the food and at least one ingredient. Some places had pictures of the food as well, so that made it really easy.
Silver/gold: the bigger chain-type stores didn't really wow me with their discounts or prices, but some smaller places actually had some nice pieces with a good price.

Since we visited many areas and places during this trip, I'm going to write between the photos to explain some things and hopefully divide the photos and posts in a somewhat logical way.

Jõel toimuvad paadisõidud ning ühest sellisest võtsime osa järgneval päeval. Sõit kestab umbes tunni, mille jooksul jõutakse algpunktist Emake Ukraina monumendiga enam-vähem kohakuti ning seejärel sõidetakse tagasi. Sõidu ajal on alumiselt korruselt võimalik osta jäätist ja õlut (võimalik, et veel midagi, kuigi suuremaid sööke ei näinud kedagi söömas) ning samuti on seal ka WC. Sõit ise maksab ligikaudu 200 UAH, tahaks öelda, et 180, kuid mälu hetkel streigib. Võrreldes Peterburi paadituuridega, mis viivad linna südames olevatel kanalitel läbi huvitavate piirkondade ning sildade alt läbi, ei saa just öelda, et siin sama elamuse saab. Paadisõitu Kiievis tasub võtta pigem siis, kui päev on palav ja tahaks tunnikese varjus mõnusat tuuleiili nautida

There are boat rides which take you along the Dnieper river roughly near the Motherland Monument and then the boat turns back. The whole cruise takes about an hour and costs...maybe something near 200 UAH. We went on a ride the next day. You can also buy beer and ice cream on board and they have a toilet as well. Compared to the boat tours of St Petersburg which go through the canals in the heart of the city, I can't say you'd get the same experience here. It's worth it on a hot day, when you just want to feel the warm breeze whilst having a roof which protects you from the sun.

Loomulikult pidin pilti tegema (suvalisest) metroost, kuigi ilusamad alad - ootesaalid, kaunistused, laed jms jäid pildistamata. Metroos tundus olevat tipptund õhtul 19-20 vahel ning ühel korral sain ka tunda seda hirmu, mis tähendab kahe küünega ainsast ligipääsetavast nurgast kinni hoidmine.
Maailma kõige sügavamast metroost, Aresanalna, pole samuti pilti, sest paraku poleks pildilt see sügavus kuidagi välja tulnud. Nimelt oli tegemist kaheosalise eskalaatoriga ning seetõttu see täiesti lõputu sõiduna ei tundunudki.

I naturally had to take a photo of the subway which is actually quite nice, I just didn't take any photos of the beautiful waiting areas, ceilings or decorations. The evening rush hour seems to be between 7-8 PM and I got to experience the fear of only being able to hold myself with two nails grabbing into some door detail.
I'm also missing a photo of the deepest subway station in the world, Arsenalna. The escalator ride was split up and thus it didn't really give the impression of an endless escalator.

Mõned pildid ka surnuaiast endast. Käisime seal tegelikult otsimas ühte konkreetset esivanemate hauda, mille lõpuks ka leidsime. Tegemist ei ole ehk tavalise "turisti visiidiga", kuid alati on huvitav näha ka selliseid kohti ning seda, kuidas nö surnuaiakultuur erineb Eesti omast. Praeguse kogemuse põhjal võib öelda, et ukrainlastel on suured kivid ja uhked struktuurid kalmude peal. Paljudel olid kivide peal ka fotod nendest, kes sinna mulda olid sängitatud. Eestis on seevastu kivid väiksemad ja graveeritud pilte on pigem puudest, lindudest, ristidest jms. Vähestel on portreed inimestest. Loomulikult on praegu tegemist ainult ühe kogemusega, sest isegi väikses Eestis on surnuaiad põhjas ja lõunas erineva välimusega.

Entrance of the cemetery that is guarded by cats - at least that's what it looked like because more and more kept showing up.
Some photos of the cemetery as well. We actually went to search for a specific relative's grave, which we luckily found. Although it's not your typical "tourist visit", it's always interesting to see how these places look in other countries and how the "cemetery-culture" differs. From this experience, I could see many very posh memorial stones and structures, many had photos of the people who laid there. In Estonia the headstones are smaller and have pictures of trees, crosses, birds etc engraved on them. Few have portraits of the deceased. But of course, this is just a small sample size. Even in Estonia there is a difference between cemeteries in the north vs in the south.

Üle pika aja taas suvilas, kuid sel korral ei tule traditsioonilist lõkkepostitust jaanipäevast. See-eest käisin kondamas Laitse raadiojaamas, kus eelmisest korrast jäid mõned asjad veel hingele ning kuna nüüd on võimalus ümbrust jäädvustada ka läbi lainurga, pidin seda muidugi testima.
Mõnevõrra parem on mahajäetud kohti pildistada varakevadel, kui külmakraadid enam ei kimbuta ning loodus nii roheline ja lopsakas veel ei ole. Kuid pole hullu, interjööris puud õnneks ei sega ja parem valgus annab rohkem armu ilma statiivita pildistajale. Lisaks lainurgale proovisin valge tasakaalu kohe pildistades paika panna - selleks tellisin netist väikse vidina, mis objektiivi ette käib ja peaks toimima kui white balance card. Senimaani olen tulemustega rahule jäänud.
Avastatud sai nüüd ka raadiojaama teine korrus, mis osutus eriliseks pärliks - sambad ja kenad laekaunistused. Kahjuks ei ole seisukord üldse kiita ning tundub, et pikka pidu sel hoonel enam ei ole. Katus lekib ja vett tilgub kindla järjepidevusega igalt poolt, seega külastades tasub rõhuda erilisele ettevaatlikkusele.
Negatiivse märkusena peab välja tooma seniste külastajate vandalismi. Lõhutud aknad, graffitid...milleks? Mõne ilusama joonistuse osas võib veel silma kinni pigistada, aga oskmatud kritseldused, niisama suvalised sõnad/laused? Midagi väärtuslikku juurde need ju ei anna. Arvan, et kohti, kus avastamas käia, on niigi vähe ja seetõttu peaks nende osas säilima mingigi austus. Aga mida siin ikka loota, kui tegelikult puudub suvakritseldajatel austus ka tavainimeste elumajade/aedade jms osas. Võikski jääda pahandama, kuid täna pole see päev ega postitus :)

No traditional Midsummer's bonfire post today! Instead I visited the old Laitse radio station, yet again. There were some areas I didn't explore the last time and I really wanted to take my wide-angle there to see what it could do.
It's somewhat better to shoot abandoned places in (early) spring when it's not that cold anymore and the trees aren't in full bloom yet. But trees don't interfere with interior shots and better lighting also gives advantage to those without a tripod, so neglected areas are definitely worth a visit even in summer. In addition to a wide-angle, I tried to set the white balance on the spot and for that I had ordered a small gadget which goes in front of your lens and helps you to set the white balance. So far I'm quite pleased with the results.
Anyway, back to the radio station. I was determined to go on the second floor as well, which turned out to be a real gem - pillars and decorated ceilings. Unfortunately the roof is in a really bad condition and I have a feeling this building won't hold up for much long. You should definitely pay attention to safety when visiting, and have eyes and ears open for everything that sounds suspicious.
As a negative remark, I have to address the vandalism of the visitors. Broken windows, graffiti...why? I guess I could look past some of the more nicer murals but scribbles of random words and no-talent graffiti? They don't add anything of value to the surroundings. There aren't that many abandoned places with easy access and the least you could do, is have some respect for their current owners or for the people who used to work there. But I guess it's a lot to ask, since people like these don't have any respect for houses still in use today. Oh well, I guess I could keep rambling about this topic, but...today is not the day nor the post for that :)

...Milleks on uus objektiiv, Nikon 10-20mm F/4.5-5.6. Seekord ostetud kasutatuna, uuena on hind olenevalt poest 360-400 eurot. Olin kaua kahe heinakuhja vahel - kas osta lainurk või portreetoru. Nagu näha, siis valituks osutus esimene. Peamiseks kaalukeeleks sai fakt, et rohkem satun pildistama siiski maastikke, hooneid jms, kuid inimesi mitte nii tihti. Eriti teravalt andis lainurga puudumine end tunda Kreenholmis ja eks see sai ka lõplikuks tõukejõuks ostmisel. Loodetavasti saab pesamuna varsti tõsisemalt proovile panna, täna tegin kiired testklõpsud kesklinnas-vanalinnas jalutades. Peaobjektiiv on mul 18-135mm ning võrdluspildid annavad aimu, millest kõigest ma senimaani ilma olen jäänud. Vasakul fookuskaugus 10mm, parempoolsete puhul on eraldi iga pildi puhul täpsustus kirjas.

...Which is a new lens, Nikon 10-200mm F/4.5-5.6. Bought as slightly used, but as new the price is usually between 360-400 euros. I was debating for a long time which should be my next lens, and the fight was between a wide-angle and a portrait lens. Finally decided to go with the first one, because I shoot landscapes, buildings more than people. It would have been nice to have it with me in Kreenholm and I think that trip was actually what gave the final push towards a wide-angle. Hopefully I can put it to the test more thoroughly soon, but meanwhile here are some quick shots of my walk in the city center and old town today.
My main lens is 18-135mm and comparison photos should give an idea what I've been missing so far. On the left the focal length is always 10mm and on the right it's specified on each photo separately.

Kreenholm

Narva Kreenholmi tehas/saar on suvehooajal taas külalistele avatud, kuid kahjuks mitte isepäi avastamiseks. Igal pühapäeval kell 12 toimuvad giidiga tuurid ning võimalik on liituda kas venekeelse või eestikeelse grupiga. Ringkäigu kogukestvuseks oli ~1,5 tundi ning pileti hinnaks 10 eurot täiskasvanule. Paaris valitud majas sai ka sees käidud, kuid kahjuks kõige äratuntavamate Kreenholmi hoonete uksed jäid meile siiski suletuks. Võib öelda, et ilmaga oli ühest küljest vedanud ja teisest küljest jälle polnud ka - mitte liiga palav, kuid ere päikesepaiste tegi pildistamise uskumatult keeruliseks. Keskpäevane päike tekitas igal nurgal erinevaid valgusmomente, mida kaameraga arvestada oli tõsine väljakutse. Seega soovitaksin Kreenholmi tuurist osa võtta pigem sügisel, kui raagus puud ja sombune ilm annavad koguilmele kindlasti väga huvitava nüansi. Paraku jäidki mitmed võtted vaid ilusaks vaateks mälupilti, sest ka järeltöötluses oli raske karmide varjude ja ülepleegitatud heledamate aladega pilte söödavaks timmida. Lisainfoks veel kõigile piltnikele, et huviliste-külastajate arv oli küllaltki suur, seega inimtühjade fotode tegemine nõudis samuti veidi ootamist ja sättimist ☺
Sellegipoolest oli äärmiselt huvitav seda linnakut oma silmaga viimaks näha. Kui mõelda, kui suurt vaeva on kunagi ehitamisel nähtud ja kui palju seal kunagi inimesi oli, siis on kergelt kõhe vaadata seda kõike lihtsalt lagunemas. Hoonetel oleks suurt potentsiaali olnud, kuid tundub, et praegusel hetkel on vähemalt osade päästmiseks juba liiga hilja. Nagu giid ütles, siis nüüd elutsevad seal vaid kassid, jänesed ja rebased.
Peale Kreenholmi käisime ka Narva bastionites, mille tuur on küll venekeelne, kuid võimalik on saada kaasa tutvustava audioga pihuseade (audio kestab kokku umbes pool tundi). Bastionites on võrdlemisi külm ning poolt tundi me vastu siiski ei pidanud 😀 Seega kui kellelgi on külastus plaanis, tasuks soojemalt riidesse panna.
Kui juba idas olla, siis pidi ka Sillamäelt läbi käima ning seekord saime nautida renoveeritud alleed täies ilus. Tee peale jäi ka Valaste juga, mille vaateplatvorm pole jätkuvalt kasutuskõlbulik, kuid see-eest lähenesime nüüd veidi teise nurga alt ja saime viimaks täisvaates kaadri kätte 😊

This year the famous Kreenholm factory/island has opened its doors for guests, but unfortunately you can't explore the area by yourself. Every Sunday at 12PM there are guided tours both in Estonian and Russian. The whole tour is about 1,5 hours and the ticket costs 10 euros per adult. Sadly, the most well known buildings are too dangerous to go in (I guess), so there are just a few smaller buildings where you are actually allowed to go in. The weather was nice for a long walk - nice breeze, not too warm, sunny...but on the other hand the harsh sunlight made it quite a challenge for photographing just about everything. Midday Sun created different light in every corner, so it took a while to try and choose decent settings. And don't get me started on post processing - that itself took forever! I'd recommend visiting Kreenholm in autumn, when the dying nature and gloomy weather add an interesting touch, a fitting feeling for the decaying surroundings. Our tour was quite crowded as well, so the photographers out there, be prepared to be quick, run ahead or wait (unless you want many people in your photos) 😉
Nonetheless it was a very nice trip and it was interesting but sad at the same time to see many people's hard work just falling apart. This whole area was full of life at some time and the buildings had so much potential for renovation. As the tour guide said, nowadays only cats, rabbits and foxes live here.
After Kreenholm we also visited Bastions of Narva. The tours for that are in Russian, but others can have a handheld audio device (about 30 minutes of stories). Be warned, it's quite cold down there, so definitely bring a jacket with you!
And once in the east, Sillamäe is a must, especially now that the path towards the sea is reconstructed. On our way we also visited Valaste waterfall. No luck in going on the bridge (still not safe), but at least this time around we got a good shot from the other side 😊

Aruvalla - Vanamõisa - Paldiski - Rummu

Tegus ja päiksepaisteline laupäev. Esimeseks peatuseks oli Aruvalla vanavara turg, kuhu ma varem sattunud ei ole. Suures hoones oli (sõna otseses mõttes) hunnikutes vanu nostalgilisi esemeid; tikutoose, nukke/mängiasju, kõikvõimalikku tehnikat, mööblit, jalgrattaid, mopeede, maale, silte, lauanõusid...ja palju-palju sellist, mida nähes on esmalt äratundmisrõõm ja teisalt mõte: "äge, et keegi on taibanud sellise asja alles hoida". Õnneks või kahjuks ma midagi äärmiselt vastupandamatut sealt ei leidnud (loe: panin silma kinni ja astusin ahvatlustest eemale) ning seega lahkusime tühjade kätega.
Järgnevaks peatuseks oli Vanamõisa laat, kus müügiartikliteks olid istikud, maiustused, riided, kreemid, hooldusvahendid, vürtsid, liha-juustu-kalaletid - ühesõnaga segu kõigist ja kõigest. Minu investeeringuks sai lehmakommide assortii, sest kes suudaks ei öelda Vana Tallinna maitselisele suhkrulaksule?
Peale toidupausi sai suund võetud Paldiskile ning ühtlasi käisin esimest korda tuletorni tipus ära. Ilusa ja selge ilmaga oli vaade täpselt nii hea kui olin ette kujutanud 😊
Õhtu lõpetuseks sai läbi põigatud ka Rummu karjäärist, seekord veidi teisi nurga alt. Päikeseloojanguvärvides tuhamägi nägi imeline välja ja sellisena vaadatuna oli huvitav kontrast võrreldes umbes aasta taguse ajaga, kui ka mäkke ronisime.

Sunny and busy Saturday. First stop was Aruvalla flea market, which I had never visited before. There's a huge farmhouse full of old nostalgic stuff; matchboxes, dolls/toys, all kinds of electronics, furniture, bicycles, mopeds, artwork, metal signs...and many-many things which all create a fuzzy feeling of nostalgic familiarity and it's cool that someone has kept these random knick-knacks. Although it was all nice to look at, I ended up not buying anything.
Next stop was a mixed fair in Vanamõisa. It had a bit of everything - plants, spices, clothes, meat-cheese-fish booths, sweets, etc. I invested in a bag of nostalgic fudge-like candy, which in literal translation means "cow's candy". And that investment was a must, because who could say no to Old Tallinn liqueur flavored sugar rush?
After a meal, it was time to move on to Paldiski and for me to conquer the lighthouse for the very first time. The view was as great as I had hoped it would be 😊
As a finishing touch, the final stop was an old favorite - Rummu quarry. About a year ago we climbed to the top from one side, this time we approached it from a different angle. I'm very glad we did because the other side was even more impressive than I had initially thought.

Luige vanavara laat. Mõned vanad tuttavad näod ning osaliselt ka sama kaup, mis eelmisel korral. Igal laadal on alati see ÜKS asi, mida hakkad igal pool märkama. Sel korral olid selleks veneaegsed vahvlimasinad. Väga heas seisukorras masinad maksid juba 32 eurot. Võrreldes sügisega, oli mu enda "saak" veidi nigelam, sel korral lahkusin Estoplasti lambi ja ühe vinüüliga. Tagasiteel jäid ette sinetavad metsatukad ja seega tegime ka väikse peatuse sinilillede pildistamiseks.

Luige fair. Some old familiar faces and also some stuff that was on sale the last time in fall. Every fair has this one particular thing that once you notice it, you'll start noticing it everywhere. This time it was all about the Soviet waffle makers. In pristine condition, they were worth about 32 euros.
I ended up with an old Estoplast lamp and a vinyl record. On our way back, we saw blossoming flowers on the side of the road, and decided to have a quick shoot.

Genfi autonäitus on tõeline maiuspala autohuvilisele ning samas põnev kogemus ka minusugusele "vaatan-Grand-Touri-ja-sõidan-tavalise-autoga" inimesele. Messiala on meeletu, kokku umbes 7 täislaadis halli. Kui on soov veidi põhjalikumalt autosid uudistada, siis soovitan planeerida külastuseks terve päeva. Vaatamiseks on välja pandud uusimad mudelid, futuristlikud kontseptsiooniautod ning ka põnevad leiud minevikust. Väga paljudesse autodesse on võimalik sisse istuda ja verivärske polsterduse lõhna nuusutada. Lisaks autodele on esindatud ka autopesulate uusimad tehnoloogiad, rehvide ja kõikvõimalike autovidinate letid. Sees asuvad ka mudelautode ning üldise nänni müügiputkad. Näituse alla on ilmselgelt läinud meeletu töö ning seega on pilet vägagi mõistliku hinnaga, 16 CHF.
Kiidusõnadena võib lisada veel seda, et kõigi markide väljapanekud (mis osaliselt asusid kõrgendatud tasanditel), olid ligipääsetavad ka ratastooliga külastajatele, keda oli liikvel omajagu. Meie käisime näitusel 13. märtsil ning olgugi, et mess oli selleks ajaks kestnud juba viis päeva, oli rahvast väga palju. Seega tuli populaarsematesse autodesse istumiseks veidi järjekorras seista.
Suure tähelepanu all oli autode puhtus ning läige - igal pool toimetasid hoolikad käed nii mopi, lapi kui tolmutuustidega.
Sissepääsu juures kontrollitakse kotte, kuid üllatuslikult ei konfiskeeritud veepudelit (ega poolikut võileiba) ning siit suured plusspunktid minu poolt. Kui kõht peaks tühjaks minema, siis sees on samuti võimalik üht-teist hamba alla osta.

Geneva motor show offers some serious eye candy for those who love cars and is also a fun experience to someone like me, who watches the Grand Tour and drives a regular car. The whole expo area is huge, it total about 7 fully packed halls. If you think you'd want a hands on experience with the cars, I strongly recommend booking a whole day for this.
The show featured newest models, futuristic concept cars and interesting finds from the past. You can sit in many of the cars and have a sniff of the sweet smell of brand new upholstery. In addition to cars there are also car wash stands, showcasing their latest technology; booths for tires and all kinds of car-related parts/oils etc. It's possible to buy car accessories, model cars and keychains.
Considering how much work they've put into this whole show, the ticket costs a reasonable 16 CHF.
More on the positive side, it was also nice that although some car makers had their cars presented on an elevated terrain, they were all accessible by wheelchair. Despite us visiting the show on its 5th opening day, it was swarming with people still, so with the more popular models, you had to wait in queue to have a look inside.
The importance of cleanliness and shine was also very high - mops and dusters were out at all times to wipe away all specks of dust and/or fingerprints.
Bags are checked before the entrance, but we were not made to throw away our water (and a half-eaten sandwich), so I assume you could bring water and some snacks with you. It is also possible to buy something to eat there, in case you'll get hungry while visiting.

Genf, Šveits vol 2: Mont Saléve // Geneva, Switzerland vol 2: Mont Saléve

Kolmapäeval olid ilmajumalad meie poolt, et näha Šveitsi/Prantsusmaa vaatamisväärsust, Saléve'i mäge, parimas valguses. Mäe tippu saab mööda köisraudteed, kuid kahjuks ilmnes alles kohale jõudes, et töös on see vaid reedest pühapäevani. Vastu tuli teisigi pettunud turiste, kes sellest meile jalavaeva vähendamiseks teada andsid. Mõned kabiinid siiski üles-alla sõitsid ja see andis lootust, et ehk saaks kellegagi kokkuleppele jõuda. Paraku ühtegi inimest me baasis liikumas ei näinud ning seega pidime leppima vaatepildiga all või võtma ette paaritunnise matka tippu. Kodulehel oleva info põhjal oli teada, et rada pidi olema hästi tähistatud ning samuti oli seal antud orienteeruv aeg, mis ronimiseks tõenäoliselt kulub. Otsustasime endi proovilepaneku kasuks ning asusime rada otsima. Mäe kõrval on kiirtee, millest üleminekuks on mitu silda. Matkaraja poole suunavat silti ei olnud ning seetõttu sattusimegi esmalt valele sillale, mis viis hoiatusmärke täis kaevandusalale. Õnneks leidsime peaegi ka õige koha üles ning mäkketõus võis alata.
Ka siin oli hoiatusmärke mitmeid, mis manitsesid valima sobilikke matkariideid-jalanõusid, varuma piisavalt vett, olema tähelepanelik kukkuvate kivide osas (mida saime ka oma silmaga näha) ning arvestama ilmastikuoludega. Kuna reisi planeerides ei olnud me arvestanud mägimatkaga, olid jalatsid linnalikud 😀 mis minu puhul tähendas pika säärega talvesaapaid, millel libeda tallaga kerge konts all. Nagu näha, siis ellu jäin, aga jalad seda nalja ilmselt mulle niipea ei andesta.
Alguses oli tõus võrdlemisi lauge, kuid peagi olid ees järsud trepid, mis võtsid korralikult võhmale. Õnneks on sellistes kohtades ka käsipuud, mida mööda on kõvasti julgem ennast üles vedada. Tegelikult oligi allatulek palju hirmsam, sest ülevalt voolas väike veenire/oja, mis tegi kivimid libedaks.
Mida kõrgemale jõudsime, seda paremaks läks ka vaade ning mäelt on hea ülevaade tervele Genfi linnale (lisaks on näha nende kuulsat purskkaevu).
Paraku ei olnud meil täiesti tippu võimalik ronida. Kui jõudsime esimesele kõrgendikule, siis järgnev silt viitas köisraudtee tipp-punkti, kuhu oli veel 2h matkamist ning seda aega (+ tagasitulek) meil enam polnud.
Mäel oligi eelnevas postituses mainitud teretamist väga huvitav kogeda - võõrad inimesed tulevad vastu ja ütlevad "bonjour". Eestis sellist asja kuskil metsarajal juba naljalt ei juhtuks.
Lõppkokkuvõttes oli küll kahju, et köisraudtee jäi proovimata, aga samas oli ka selline matk esmakordne ja väga põnev väljakutse. Mul on hea meel, et me kohe käega ei löönud, vaid otsustasime mäge vallutama hakata 😊

The weather was great for visiting Mont Saléve which is located in France, very close to the Swiss border. You can get on top of the mountain on a cable car, but unfortunately we were unaware that it's only working from Friday - Sunday. We saw couple of empty cabins going up and that gave us hope that maybe we could somehow get on top still. There was no one to be seen at the base where the cabins were operated, so that left us with two options: to admire the view from below or to hike to the top. After some thinking we decided to test ourselves and find a way there. It was said on their web page that there are many ways to get up and the trails are marked well. There is a highway next to the mountain and there are also some bridges to cross it. Since there were no signs leading the way to the trail, we stumbled on a wrong bridge at first, which led us to a mining area full of signs which looked like regular people had no business there (we can only assume, it was all in French). Luckily the second bridge was the right one and there were also warning signs, this time about being safe on the trail. For instance it recommended checking the weather beforehand, having a good water supply with you, wearing the right clothes and shoes and also warned about falling rocks (which we got to see as well).
Since we didn't plan hiking at all, I was wearing "polite footwear" - boots with modest, but slippery heels 😀 I feel like my feet will never forgive me that experience.
At first it didn't look too difficult, but the higher we got the steeper it got as well. Luckily they've somehow managed to build stairs with handrails there which were very helpful for pulling yourself up.
Our workout was well awarded with the greatest view over Geneva. You could even see the fountain from there. When we finally reached the first highpoint, there was a sign that showed how long it would take to reach where the cable car would've taken you. Unfortunately that was another 2h hike and we just didn't have that kind of time anymore, so we decided to head back down.
As I wrote in the previous post, it was very interesting to see people hiking and saying "bonjour" when passing us. It's something I've never experienced in Estonia, where people generally try to avoid "unnecessary" human contact as much as possible.
In conclusion it was a bummer that we didn't get to go on the cable car, but on the other hand I actually really enjoyed the hike as well. It was something I had never done before, and we also got to see a very nice view during this adventure, so all in all - I'm glad we didn't give up right away 😊

Genf, Šveits vol 1: linn // Geneva, Switzerland vol 1: the city

4 päeva Genfis - mis esialgu tundus piisav, ei olnud seda mitte. Vaadata, käia ja imetleda oli küll ja veel. Üllataval kombel oli ilm/kliima hoopis mahedam ja soojem kui Eestis - Genfis poleks talve nagu olnudki. Päikesepaistelise ilmaga võis tänavapildis näha juba kõhupluuse. Märtsi keskel oli see meiesuguste külma ja tuisu maalt pärit inimestele täiesti sürreaalne vaatepilt! Sarnast ilma võib oodata siin kuu-kahe pärast (kui sedagi).
Iga päev sai käidud ligi 30 000 sammu, seega õhtul oli voodi parim asi maailmas. Väga võõralt (kuid samas positiivselt) üllatas veel inimeste sõbralikkus ja viisakus. Väiksemates kohtades oli see iseenesest mõistetav, et üksteisele (mis siis, et võõrastele) öeldakse "bonjour!".
Tõele au andes - hinnad kõige sõbralikumad ei olnud ja sellega peaks kindlasti arvestama, kui on soov Šveitsi reisida.
Reisi jooksul jõudsime külastada Patek Philippe kellamuuseumi (Genfi passiga tasuta, pilte kahjuks teha ei saanud), Genfi autonäitust (pilet 16 CHF), ning CERNi püsinäitust (tasuta). Samuti ronisime Mont Saléve'i otsa, jalutasime üle Prantsusmaa-Šveitsi piiri, tegime tiiru mitteametlikul punaste laternate tänaval ning loomulikult proovisime ära Šveitsi klassika, fondüü.
Lennujaama saabudes saab väljapääsu juurest printida ühistranspordi pileti, mis kehtib 80 minutit ning millest peaks piisama, et hotelli/majutusasutusse jõuda. 48h Genfi passi soetasime järgneval päeval samuti ning see maksis umbes 37 eurot. Hinna sees on tasuta ühistransport ning prii sissepääs mitmetesse muuseumitesse. Kui aega on rohkem, siis tasub see kindlasti ennast ära.
Mõned tähelepanekud:

Trellid ja (metallist) rulood/aknakatted/aknaluugid on väga olulised. Need olid pea igal majal
Üllatavalt palju torkas silma parukapoode
Genfis ei ole taksofonid sugugi haruldane nähtus
Punane tuli ei loe jalakäijale suurt midagi. Pigem näeb rumal välja see, kes rohelist ootama jääb
Inimesed on heas vormis, väga palju sõidetakse jalgrattaga
Siin linnas kehtib reegel: mida väiksem liiklusvahend seda õnnelikum inimene. Mu Clio sulanduks sinna ideaalselt
Kelladest ja šokolaadist ei ole võimalik mööda vaadata
Poed pannakse harjumatult vara kinni
Linn on väga puhas ning erineva prügi jaoks on väga paljudes kohtades näha sorteerimisvõimalust paberile, pudelitele jms
Inimesed tänavad sind kõige väiksemate nö teenete eest, nt kui annad kellelegi teed

Pildipostitus tuleb seekord ilmselt kolmes osas, esmalt jalutuspildid Genfist, siis Mont Saléve ja selle ümbrus ning viimaseks Genfi autonäitus.

4 days in Geneva is definitely not enough! There is so much to see, visit and experience. To our surprise, the weather is much softer and warmer than in Estonia where you'd never see crop tops out in March. But in Geneva, it's a reality. There was no sign of winter, the flowers were already blossoming and some plants had leaves on.
Every day we walked about 30 000 steps and were still left with a lot more to see. A positive surprise was the friendliness and politeness of Swiss people. In smaller places it was usual for total strangers to say "bonjour" to us.
To be fair, the prices were not as friendly as the people and this is really something you should consider when traveling to Switzerland.
In conclusion we managed to visit Patek Philippe watch museum (free with the Geneva pass, but unfortunately no photos allowed), 88th Geneva motor show (ticket 16 CHF) and CERN (free). We also hiked to Mont Saléve, crossed France-Switzerland border, walked around in the non-official red lights district and tried out the Swiss classic, the fondue.
Before exiting the airport you get a chance to print out free public transport pass which is valid for 80 minutes. That should be enough to get to your hotel. We also purchased the Geneva 48h pass for about 37 euros. For that you get free public transport and free entrance to some museums. When there's more time, it pays off well.
Some observations about Geneva:

Bars on windows, window shutters/blinds etc are very big here. I think every single house had them installed
We didn't expect to see so many wig shops
Payphones still exist here. And they look cool
Red light means nothing to most pedestrians. It took a while to get used to it
Bicycles everywhere, which is probably why everyone is so fit
The vehicles are small, tiny and and unimaginably tiny. They are easy to park and my Clio would fit right in with this crowd
Watches and chocolate - prepare to see them everywhere, a lot, in great sizes
Shops close early
The city is clean and recycling is taken seriously
People thank you for the smallest of favors - i.e you give way to someone

Umbes 2 aastat tagasi sai siin samuti pilti tehtud. Tol korral oli ilus kevadpäev ning ka täna oleks võinud sama soe olla! Pilti tehes ununevad kindad, müts...kuniks ongi kogu keha sinine. Loodetavasti saab sel korral ilma külmetuseta hakkama :)

It's been almost two years since I took photos here on a nice spring day. Today was quite the opposite - freezing cold. It's easy to forget that your hands can't feel a thing when you see a beautiful scene and start adjusting the camera. Hopefully I don't get sick now!

Uus aasta sai seekord vastu võetud Tartus. Nagu juba traditsiooniks kujunenud, siis ka sel korral ilma lumeta! See-eest oli kompensatsiooniks suurepärane seltskond 😊 ning külma ilma vastu aitas loomulikult klaasike Vana Tallinna koorelikööri.

I celebrated new year in Tartu this time. No snow, again! Lack of snow was luckily compensated by being around wonderful company 😊 and to bring warmth into a cold night, assistance from a glass of Old Tallinn Cream liqueur.

Botaanikaaed, imekombel oli see 1. jaanuaril lahti! Pildid tehtud mobiiliga, sest külmast tulles oli troopiline kasvuhoonekliima kaamerale liiast ning objektiiv muutus põhjalikult uduseks. Esimesel pildil üleval vasakus nurgas banaanid! // Botanical gardens were miraculously open on the 1st of January. My lens turned foggy (that's what you get when going into a tropical greenhouse after being in the cold), so I had to use my cell to take photos.
