Set during the separation of Norway from Sweden in 1905, this richly detailed novel of love and loss was inspired by the life of the author's great-great-aunts.

Oleanna and her sister Elisabeth are the last of their family working their farm deep in the western fjordland. A new century has begun, and the world outside is changing, but in the Sunnfjord their world is as small and secluded as the verdant banks of a high mountain lake. With their parents dead and their brothers all gone to America, the sisters have resigned themselves to a simple life tied to the land and to the ghosts of those who have departed.

The arrival of Anders, a cotter living just across the farm's border, unsettles Oleanna's peaceful but isolated existence. Sharing a common bond of loneliness and grief, Anders stirs within her the wildness and wanderlust she has worked so hard to tame. When she is confronted with another crippling loss, Oleanna must decide once and for all how to face her past, claim her future, and find her place in a wide new world.

Oleanna was short-listed in the 2011 Faulkner-Wisdom novel competition.

I turned 40, I was healthy, I loved and was loved in return, I wrote a lot, and learned a lot.

Even better, I was blessed with fantastic readers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

2012 is going to kick into high gear for me starting tomorrow. Goodreads is hosting a giveaway of Oleanna starting tomorrow (the book will officially launch later this month) and there will be guest posts and giveaways at other blogs, which I'll announce shortly.

I also wanted to pass on some exciting news: Heather Domin, author of The Soldier of Raetia, has just made her excellent novella Allegiance available for free. What a great way to start your new year!

I wish you all health, love, joy, learning, and great reads in 2012!

Set during the separation of Norway from Sweden in 1905, this richly detailed novel of love and loss was inspired by the life of my great-great-aunts.
<img align="left" src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/jkrose/oleanna_cover_web_small.jpg" / hspace = "10" vspace = "10">

This was the first du Maurier I'd ever read (I know...) and I loved the pacing, the history, the witty banter, the ambiguity. Most of all I loved the historical geography, and focus on landscape.

So, which one of her books should I read next?

For ancient Germanic tribes, thunder arose when Donar threw his hammer. In the Bible it is the voice, especially the angry voice, of God. The Celts interpreted thunder as the expression of cosmic disturbance that evoked the anger of the elements; additionally they saw in it a punishment of the gods. In Siberia and North America there is an idea of a mythic bird that produces thunder with the beating of its wings; it may appear as a wild goose or duck, as an iron bird, or as an eagle. For the Chinese, thunder arose when a heavenly dragon moved. Sometimes (e.g., in some Indian cultures) a one-legged thunder god occurs. Thunder gods frequently have smiths as helpers who forge such things as lightning, hammers, and clubs for them."
