The Best Beach House

I have sifted and perused through, dare I say, thousands of shelter magazines. I've surfed in and out of tens of thousands of online home design albums and blogs. I have bought decorating books and brought home arm-breaking piles of home hardcovers from the local library. But until today, I hadn't truly discovered; excavated my true authentic house. The one that just says 'that's me'. This is 'me'. It wouldn't matter if I had little or abundant money, this would be the house for me. Someday when you come to one of my cultural potlucks, this will be the home (kind) you will walk into. (click on the photos to see all the lovely, perfect-imperfect details) I won't bore you with the reasons why because the images completely say it all. What is your authentic house and have you found it yet?

The Long Long Spring Thaw

It is with great pride and excessive politeness that I ask you for forgiveness yet again for discussing the weather. I am Canadian after all. We chat about this topic every 15 minutes every day of the week. The sulk continues all year. Too humid. Too freezing. Too grey. Too windy. Too foggy. One could never state that Canada's weather is predictable and boring. Not like, say, the Middle East.

The citizens of this expansive, geographical wonder deserves an Olympic medal for remaining (generally) happy with all the temperatures and conditions that are literally thrown at us by Mother Nature. Those skilled hockey teams and figure skaters have nothing on us! We have mastered the ever changing forecast.

It is Spring. Apparently. I have made a promise. As long as it is not a white out blizzard then I am going to embrace what's happening outside wholeheartedly. Openly. With gratitude. No complaining!

April. You aren't fooling us! Dammit all though. Would you mind sending warm sunshine?

Death of A Camera Part II Go Fund Me

The story goes like this and it's not a fish story, nor is it embellished as some may have you believe I tend to do with tang and giggles:

I killed a second camera.

Truth. I was scoping shot locations for an upcoming wedding. Juggling my big cam, baby pro cam and mobile cam. (I've been practicing this skill and actually, I'm pretty darn good.)

The grass was dewy, slightly overcast; the sun making all efforts to appear. Click. Click. Then I reached for my baby pro cam - my oxygen, my favorite child, my lover, my confidante - my anti-depressant - and could not find her.

Panic set in. Eyes quickly darting in the vicinity of green. Nothing.

Heart races. Chest tightens. Tears well up. Oh. My. God.

Foot Stomp.

Loud, very loud f-word.

The story continues:

I say (out loud)

"God. You don't want me to be a Photographer do you?"

"God! Twice!!!"

"God. Are you sending me a message?"

"God. My creative output is really, really flowing well lately. Come on!"

"God. I'm pretty pissed off at you lately. Middle East! Airplanes! Tornadoes!"

"God. Are you punishing me?"

"Dear God. Maybe if people really do love my work, they may chip in to help me get another one quickly."

"God?"

Well, the camera landed in Walters Falls. Depression has set in.

Cryoconite is powdery windblown dust made of a combination of small rock particles, soot and microbes which is deposited and builds up on snow, glaciers, or icecaps. The darkening, especially from small amounts of soot, absorbs solar radiation melting the snow or ice beneath the deposit, and sometimes creating a cryoconite hole. Cryoconite may contain dust from far away continental deserts or farmland, particles from volcanic eruptions or power plant emissions, and soot. It was first described and named by Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld when he traveled on Greenland's icecap in 1870. During summer, cryoconite holes frequently contain liquid water and thus provide a niche for cold-adapted microorganisms like bacteria and algae to thrive.

Soot decreases the reflectivity, or albedo of ice, increasing absorption of heat. Cryoconite is constantly being added to snow and ice formations along with snow. It is buried within the snow or ice, but as the snow or ice melts increasing amounts of dark material is exposed on the surface, accelerating melting.
