Princelion: Who is GemSton:e?Gemston:e: Gemstone is a very career focused fun loving and friendly individual, who loves to laugh, loves family, friends and life.

When did your carrier as a singer start?I got started in music pretty early in life. Music was always apart of my family while growing up. My dad was a big Dancehall fan and my mom was and still is a lover of Reggae music, specifically Bob Marley songs. My actual singing and song writing skills came "into play" when I was about 10 years old and it just grew from there. I was singing solo parts in the choir at church. Then a friend of mine called Gallawass, who is a Dancehall Dj, asked me to collaborate with him on a song, a dancehall song for a competition in Portmore called Portmore Star Search, in which we made it to the finals and the judges liked us and endorsed our style. That is where my dancehall music career began.

GemSto:n is not only a singer, you’re also a teacher at U.W.I., what do you teach there?I lecture Linguistics at the University where I am also doing my PhD in Linguistics.

Do you think your degree has helped you also in the world of music?Yes, to some extent it has, because my PhD thesis is on the Phonology of Dancehall music and it is approaching the music from a scientific view. It allows me to spend more time researching the genre of Dancehall which has really motivated me as a dancehall artist. Not only that, but having my degree got me the lecturing position at U.W.I and that helps me to pay for a lot of musical works such as production and production elements such as studio time, etc.

Do you think education is important in music?Yes, it is important in music, it is not essential to talent, but it is important in the sense that an artist must be intellectually aware their surroundings. They must have knowledge of the business and be able to understand the music industry and other aspects of life. Without education, it is almost next to impossible to move forward in life in an effective and rewarding manner.

Where do you start when you’re writing a song?It depends on my meditation at the time, usually I start with a chorus, as soon as a melody comes in my head, I write it down. At other times, I may start off writing a verse and then later on come up with a chorus that suits it.

Who inspired you?My musical inspiration came from my dad, he loves music and would always play the legends of the past in our home, especially Bob Marley. My uncle was also a big inspiration to me, he loved writing and singing music and I would watch and listen to him for hours and even try and sing along to his songs.

Which are your favorite artists of the present and the past?
In regards to the past, I would have to say Bob Marley, because he crossed musical barriers and touched the world with his songs. You can feel his passion through his words and this passion connects with his audiences. I also love and admire Ladt Saw, because she is so talented and hardworking, she is truly the Queen of Dancehall. There are so many favourites, I can’t put them all here, but to name a few: I like Queen Ifrica, Mavado, Demarco, Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Capleton, Beres Hammond and Assassin.

You have just released “Negation” on the party session riddim produced by the Italians Nite Lite, how did this collaboration rise?
I met the Italians who are the owners of Nite Lite Productions through my friend and fellow artist Asante Amen. He introduced me to them in Ocho Rios early last year. They heard me sing and gave Asante the riddim to give me and I recorded Negotiation on it and they liked it, that’s how that song came about with Nite Lite.

Moreover you have worked together with Mr.Rango, a veteran in the Spanish Reggae scene, you have made a video with him and sang on the base of Daddy Cobra. Why do you have this relation with the Spanish artists?

I love the Spanish Language, it is one of my favourite languages of the 5 that I speak. I met Mr. Rango in Jamaica 10 years ago when I was a teenager, we have always been in touch over the years and we decided recently to do a song together. Called “Eres Mia” for Daddy Cobra’s label and then Cobra asked me to do another song solo for the label.

What are your future projects? Are you planning to release an album? Or maybe to do a European tour?
Yes, I am currently working on my Album called “Diamond in the Ruff”, hopefully I should finish it by next March. I have a few shows coming up, Mr. Rango and I will be performing at Plug n Play, which is a Kurfew Productions event at the Hilton in Kingston in December. We are also confirmed for another major show in December that is staged in Portmore, Jamaica, I don’t want to name it as yet. Next Summer I will be doing a show in Madrid, Spain that is being promoted by Kaloncha Sounds.

What do you think about contemporary Dancehall in JA and in the rest of the world, comparing it to some years ago?
Dancehall has definitely changed since the 90s, it is fusing more and more with hip hop and pop music, but there are still some veterans in the business that are trying to keep “dancehall” true to “dancehall”. I like some of the contemporary stuff because change is inevitable in any career field in the world; but I miss the original swag of the 90s, in terms of the dances, the riddims and the vocal quality production.

Now a question we have made to many artists: for which producer, dead or alive, would you like to sing?
I would love to work with Dave Kelly, Stephen Marley and Timberland.

And with which singer?
I would love to collaborate with Bob Marley and Nicky Minaj.

Sneakas: Sneakas è il mi nome da rapper; mi è stato dato tanto tempo fa perchè sono un vero freak (appassionato) delle Sneakers, ne ho circa 250 paia e mi è stato dato questo nom perchè ogni volta che uscivo con i mie amici, ne indossavo un paio differente. Abbiamo cambiato lo spelling a Sneakas, perchè pensavo fosse più cool quando ero giovane e mi è rimasto addosso.

Eri ancora giovane quando ti sei spostao con la tua famiglia a NYC. Hai sentito una differeza culturale arrivando da Israele?

Avevo 11 anni quando mi spostai a NYC e fu un cambio enorme da Israele. Avevo vissuto a Washington D.C. Prima, quinid conoscevo in parte la lingua e la cultura, e mi ci è voluto pochissimo per “innamorarmi” di questa città, che ormai chiamo “casa” da 17 anni. Mi sento comunque molto attaccato a Tel Aviv e Israele in generale, quindi vado e vengo da una all'altra molto spesso. Ma NYC è la mia “casa base” senza ombra di dubbio! Ecco perchè il nostro prossimo video “Summer in the City” è un omaggio a New York e tutto ciò questa meravigliosa città ha da offrire in estate.

Come e quando hai iniziato? Come sei entrato a far parte della cultura hip hop?

Ho iniziato ad interessarmi al hip hop ai 12 anni più o meno. Suonavo il basso in una rock band e abbiamo iniziato ad essere influenzati moltissimo da Rage Against the Machine, e da lì sono arrivato a Arrested Development, a poi a A Tribe Called Quest e da lì vi sono rimasto aggangiato. Ho smesso di suonare il basso e ho iniziato a scrivere rime. È ciò che facevo tutto il giorno – provarci con le ragazze, uscire con i miei amici, e scrivere rime – è diventato la mia vita.

Parliamo dei tuo progetti passati. Hai fatto un tour di un anno nel Medio Oriente nel 2003-2004. che paesi ha toccato il tour? Com'è andata? Perchè hai scelto il Medio Oriente?

Per la verità è una storia divertente, mia madre mi convinse che avrei dovuto fare un anno all'estero con la mia scuola, ed io ero d'accordo. Avevo già lavorato molto in Israele e avevo numerosi amici con talento come Shi 360, e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme e produrre musica. Da lì ho preso il contatto con Liron Teheni, e insieme Liron ed io abbiamo iniziato a fare show in tutto Israele. Penso di aver fatto più di 100 show quell'anno! È stato fantastico e divertente, e così è come è iniziato il mio primo album solista “In It For The Change”, semplicemente facendo musica con gente che mi era di ispirazione in Israele, e poi riportando quei suoni folli a casa a NYC.

Questo tour influenzò la tua decisione di far parte del progetto “Peace in he Middle

East Project” con Mazzi? Puoi spiegare ai nostri lettori il progetto, i suoi fini.

Il “Peace Project” iniziò alcuni anni dopo. Avevo letto di quello che stavano facendo M.C. Serch e il super DJ Waleed Coyote, e volevo farne parte. Mi sono messo con Waleed e lui mi ha presentato a Mazzi. Il resto, come si dice, è storia. C'erano ottime vybes tra Mazzi e me e facevamo buona musica insieme, alla fine ha raggiunto Serch e questo ha preso parte enormemente nel progetto, dando idee per le canzoni, aiutandoci a scegliere i beats, essendo semplicemente un grande maestro. Serch ed io siamo rimasti in stretto contatto da allora, ed è stato una grande influenza per me come artista, ed anche un amico, è una parte essenziale del mio percorso fin qua, e mi sento molto fortunato ad averlo al mio fianco e insegnandomi a fare i classici.

Nel 2008 hai pubblicato il tuo album di debutto “In It For The Change”. Cos'è è cambiato dal tuo primo album al tuo nuovo Mixtape nel tuo modo di fare e vivere la musica, nel tuo stile di vita?

È un'ottima domanda! “In It For The Change” era tutto ME. Era la mia selezione di beat, i mie contatti, io facevo tutto e sceglievo tutto. Avevo buone persone al mio fianco come Al “Boogie” Gordon e “Bassy” Bob Brookman che hanno mixato l'album, ma la maggior parte delle scelte su ciò che andava fatto o no erano mie, quindi ho imparato veramente a fare musica attraverso l'album. Ci sono voluti 4 anni per farlo e molte canzoni che abbiamo prodotto non hanno avuto successo, quindi è stato un processo di apprendimento, e facendolo tutto da solo in quel modo ho imparato come fare un album, come produrre canzoni, e sono cresciuto veramente e ho trovato la mia voce come artista. Con il mixtape, ho team fantastico al mio fianco. M.C. Serch mi guida e mi da i suoi consigli e i suoi pensieri sulla musica. Jeff “JHO” Horowitz è la mia mano destra, mi aiuta con tutto ed è una grande risorsa averlo ed è anche uno dei mie più cari amici. Elliot e Jared della Sunnyday Entertainment sono due tipe fantastici che lavorano sodo e apportano così tanto conoscimento e amore al progetto, che questo non era solo mio, ma era un processo collettivo con persone meravigliose e penso si senta dalla musica, è così “organic and dope”. Questo team mi fa lavorare sodo perchè so che farebbero qualunque cosa per me, quindi so che devo fare del mio meglio tutti i giorni. Quindi è stato fatto da un artista maturo con un team fantastico, ecco perchè il mixtape è così dope!

Parliamo ora del tuo mixtape: cos'è Hebonics? Cosa vuo dire?

“Hebonics” è un gioco sulla parola “Ebonics” che divenne famosa grazie al grande rapper “Big L” morto alcuni anni fa. Big L fece la canzone Ebonics, che mi ispirò moltissimo e pensai che sarebbe stato cool fare un pezzo Hebrew/Jewish Ebonics, o “Hebonics”. Così è nata l'idea. Poi è diventata una sfida: riuscire a fare rime con il suo stesso flow e con la sua stessa metrica, ma in Yiddish, non è stato facile, ma ce l'ho fatta e ho l'impressione che sia un feat fenomenale, che mostra alla gente le mie capacità, anche se è corta è malata! E in realtà non parlo Yiddish, ma parlo ebraico, non so fare rime in ebraico ma lo parlo bene quasi quanto l'inglese, e sì lo parlo a casa.

Come mai hai scelto come host il grande Peter Rosenberg di Hot97?

Penso che Peter fosse perfetto. Lo conobbi tramite Mazzi e Peter è un grande. Ama l'hip hop, e sa veramente cosa fa, e a parte questo, è ebreo e ha avuto un enorme successo nel suo mondo. Sono stato molto fortunato che a Peter piacesse la musica e volesse essere l'host del mixtape. Secondo me non c'era altra scelta, Peter è quello giusto! Quinidi ero felice che partecipasse. E tutti quelli che conoscono Peter sanno che lui NE SA di hip hop e non fa mai nulla per vendersi, quindi fu come “Hey... a Peter paiace la mia musica a tal punto da essere l'host del mio mxtape, è fantastico, facciamolo!! LOL”

Hai fatto numerosi feat. nel Mixtape, in particolare con i migliori artisti ebrei americani e israeliani: perchè hai scelto loro?

Chiunque sia nel mixtape è qulaucno di cui io sono fan. Sono un super fan di Ill Bill, sono un fan di Solomon, e ovviamente di M.C. Serch. Mi piace lavorare con gente che rispetto e he penso abbiano un grande talento, e chiunque sia parte di questo mixtpae è molto rispettato e ha un grande talento, quindi è stato fatto solo da grandi artisti, che l'hanno reso un progetto speciale, qualcosa di cui vado molto fiero.

Chi ha prodotto Hebonics 101? I beat? Le liriche sono tutte tue?

Ogni rima che io abbia mai cantato è mia, non canto mai nulla che non scriva io stesso, quinsi ho scritto tutti i miei versi, e chiunque abbia partecipato ha scritto le sue proprie liriche. Lavoro principalemente con dei produttori della H.I.T.M productions, vengono dal Bronx e hanno un grande talento. Sono anche nel mio prossimo progetto, e saranno in ogni mio progetto, H.I.T.M è la mia famiglia!

Hai in programma di fare un album dopo tutto ciò?

Stiamo pianificando altro mixtape per cui abbiamo già fatto alcune canzoni, ed è veramente la migliore musica io abbia mai fatto. Ho dei nuovi produttori e dei feat pazzaschi, di cui non posso ancora parlare, ma state certi che ogni volta che faccio un nuovo progetto sarà meglio del precedente, e come dice Serch “i classici infrangono tutte le regole” quindi questo è ciò che cerco di fare, fare classici.
