The RR Spike Knife Complete Forging Process

Hello,

I was asked the other day "How much would a knife like THAT ONE cost?"

When I answered the customer seemed a little shocked. I actually priced it a little lower than the actual cost because I knew the person. It was suggested to me that I should do a short write up on exactly what it takes to make one of these knives.

You may think A person could whip one of these babies out in an hour or two, or that all it takes is a little pounding on a an anvil an presto chango you went from a RR Spike to a Knife just like that.

The truth of the matter however is, it takes a lot of time and effort to get them to the point at which the quality is such that it can be sold as a usable, long lasting, and sought after item. The first few I made were ok at best and were not not heat treated and I didn't spend a lot of time on them, but they were functional. As I grew in my ability and my clientele, I was getting a lot of custom requests for new and innovative ideas for my knives. I love a challenge and when someone says "Do you think you can do this?" I almost always say "I never have but I sure Can!" I am a firm believer in the fact that there isn't anything that I can't do. If I (or you, for that matter), can imagine it I can do it.

My customers have developed my style as much as I have. If I get a custom request and I like it, it will most likely end up in my store. I come up with pretty good ideas on my own but, the customers always have new and more creative ways that they want their custom pieces made. I put a disclaimer on the very first page of my website stating that if you have a custom request and I like it, it will be for sale in my store.

Enough of that...Here is the process

First of all I will need a bulleted list for reference, (it's a lengthy process)

Acquire a Forge, Anvil, Multiple sets f Tongs, Hammer(s), Vise, Grinder, Belt Grinder, Buffer, Polisher, and various other tools.
Get a hold of some HC RR Spikes
Forge the Spike into the correct shape
Grind it into final shape
Do any twisting of the handle or other finishing forging
Grind the flat and the bevel into the blade
Heat treating
Start the finish (Matte, Polished, Etching, Rough, Painted)
Leather Wrapped Handle

Make a sheath (A whole other Project)

Acquire All the tooling and materials for working with leather
Acquire the right size and weight of leather
Figure out a unique design
Do any artwork or customization

Packaging and Advertising

Figure a unique way of packaging your product
Acquire the materials for packaging
Have business cards to include with your packaging
Ship your product.

Acquiring the necessary tools for the trade is first and foremost and takes a lot of time, money and effort.

It took me 3 or four years to get enough of the proper equipment to accomplish the quality in my products that I must have. It takes a lot of searching through word of mouth, classifieds, and auctions to get where you can have an operational shop. Once you find the pieces you are looking for you need to purchase them. This takes money and usually a good amount of it. Unless you are lucky enough to have a blacksmith in your family that is ready to retire and hand you down all his tools, the first step isn't to easy.

Finding the right spikes.

RR Spikes aren't the ultimate best steel for knives but if you get the ones marked with HC, Which stands for high carbon, they take to hardening and annealing pretty well and will hold an edge for a long time. I use only High Carbon Spikes when making knives. This is important because while RR Spikes aren't the best steel for making knives the HC ones are better than ones that are not. These knives will stand up to years of use and hold an edge just as well as any other treated steel knife. Just Think, how long do you think they last on a railroad? A really long time right?

Forging it into the right shape

Practice, Practice, Practice... Forging anything correctly just comes with experience. I have been smithing for over ten years. I have only been producing the knives for sale for a couple years, but have been making them for approx. 5 years. I have made so many now that I couldn't possibly count them all. The forging step takes about 1 hour by hand, maybe longer or maybe shorter depending on a few factors.

Grind it into shape

Grinding the knife into shape can be a fairly quick process once you figure out the forging process and get it down to a science. The more precise your forging the less time it takes to grind the knife into the final shape. This takes a good half an hour to one hour.

Twist

This is usually done after the blade is in it's final shape. However it can be done before hand. There is special tools I have made for twisting that I will not share here but they are easy to make and you can Google them and make your own if you so choose to. This takes about a half hour.

Grinding the flat and bevel

To grind the flat and the bevel you need a belt grinder. This takes some time as well, it usually only takes a couple hours and can take up to four hours to get it right depending on the style of the grind you are after. There is a hallow grind and flat grind. I usually go for the flat grind. as you can see we are already up to 5 hours and possibly up to nine depending on the style of grind desired.

Heat treating

This is somewhat a secret of the trade as to what temperatures and the process of heat treatment I use. I combination treat the knives so you get the flexibility of the spine but with the harder edge holding ability of the blade edge. This takes at least three hours.

Now we need to start the finish

Sanding with progressively finer sandpaper will make a nice finish on the knife and you can achieve a very shiny finish this takes a long time usually 2 to 3 hours at east and if you are going for a mirror finish it takes at least two more hours of polishing and buffing.

Painted

I use KG GunKote™ brand coatings when a customer wants their Knife painted. This is a baked on coating that will never wear off and extends the life, look, and wear-ability of the knife. This is an incredibly durable coating that is used on firearms, automotive applications and is MIL SPEC. It is available in many many colors.

The process Is simple yet lengthy.

First I sand blast the blade and completely de-grease it.

I then Airbrush K-Phos™ Phosphate treatment onto the metal which actually changes the molecular structure of the surface of the steel and creating a super protective phosphorus coating which will resist rust almost indefinitely.

After the K-Phos™ Treatment is dried I preheat the blade and airbrush the Colored GunKote™ Finish onto the knife.

Once it is dried it is baked for at least two hours to cure the finish. Once the finish is cured the only way to get it off is to sand blast it off.The longer it bakes the deeper the color gets.

I am going to experiment with different patterns and and going to be offering digital camo for sure as an option in the store.

Etching

Then if you need to etch a name, logo, or image into the blade you need to go through the whole process of building the image in a computer program and cutting it out on a CNC Vinyl cutting machine and chemically etching the design into the metal. This process takes few hours , depending on the complexity of the design.

Leather wrapped Haandle

To wrap the leather on the handle is not easy. It is eight strands of premium grade upholstery leather cut into strips and braided in an eight plait bullwhip pattern around the handle all done by hand by me. It is glued with a special epoxy on the front end and tied off and glued again at the pommel end. It is then finished off by a wider piece of leather being wrapped around the unfinished end and glued and riveted in so it will never unravel or come loose for the life of the knife (which should last a lifetime).

We are now somewhere around fifteen hours into a single blade just for the metal work, Not including the Leather Work for the Sheath.

Making the sheath takes at least four hours, by the time you cut out the correct shapes and custom fit it to the blade (since every one is hand made and completely unique), Glue it up, Grove the stitched area for the stitches to reside below the level of the surface (to protect them from wear on the front and back), Hand stitching it, adding the hardware to it such as snaps and rivets in the areas prone to wear, finishing the leather, burnishing the edges, and customized artwork. Whew!!! that was a mouthful...

Now Packaging

I was originally spending a lot of time on this. I since have decided to go rustic and use plain newsprint and wrap it as though I am wrapping a subway sandwich. I always ad a business card and usually a strip of leather holding a small tag with car instructions tied to the sheath. Simple but presentable.

So all in all it can take between 15 to 25 hours and sometimes more depending on how customized it gets.

This is why the price can get up there, not because I am trying to make a crap load of money for nothing. I think my time away from my family is worth a lot, so I don't think it is unfair to charge a fair amount for it.

The base price only puts me at around $10.00 dollars an hour and that is before I add in the cost of my Fuel, electricity bills, and materials... I'm not making much on each knife. Leather IS NOT CHEAP. Propane and Coal ARE NOT CHEAP.

Please understand that when you buy a knife from me you aren't just buying a knife. You are buying a one of a kind - hand made - never to be duplicated - useful - Beautifully Master Crafted - Tool.

There is a lot of Time, Blood (sometimes literally), Sweat, and Tears put into each one. I strive for the highest standards and am not satisfied with anything less.

I AM BACK!!

WOW it has been a busy year.

I started selling my Blacksmithed items that I make as my hobby on my Etsy™ Shop Called

It got so busy towards the end of the year that I had to put it on vacation for a little while to catch up. It is still currently on vacation while I upgrade some of my equipment. When I turn it back on I WILL BE READY for some orders.

Along with my daughters softball, swimming, gymnastics, our family camping trips several times a year, a full time job, chores around the house, family, extended family, remodeling the house, fixing springtime storm damage, and school functions, it was a very busy year indeed.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS UPON US

The holidays have arrived. Gone are the days of summer heat and mowing the grass...thank gawd. Hunting season is here and the leaves have all fallen off the trees. Thanksgiving Day has come and gone. The first snowfall has fallen and whitewashed the land getting ready for a new beginning in the spring. I even used my snowblower for the first time already. It is my favorite time of the year when it gets cool out and family is all around all the time (I stay to busy the rest of the year). It is almost time to build a snowman with my little angel. I sure do love to spend the holiday season with my little family. The make my world a wonderful place to be.

Just a tip, keep warm blankets in your car, a flashlight, if you have a baby keep some form of food and drink in the vehicle, some kitty litter (good for traction incase you are stuck), a chain to help pull yourself out(even though most rednecks revel at the chance to pull somone out of a ditch with their truck), jumper cables, and if you are able to, keep your fuel tank above the halfway point. These few things may seem like common knowlege but, few people remember the basics in our hustle and bustle life style nowadays.

Please take time this holiday season to keep a smile on your face, it makes a difference. And if you see someone that needs help and you are able to....HELP THEM OUT. It is the good thing to do and besides, Karma can be a B$#@h.

Deer Season is here

The weather outside has turned from hot and nasty to cool, colorful and perfect for getting into the woods a little more often. I love this time of year. I have been in the woods of and on since september because around here in northern IL where I am from squirrell season opens up the first of September. This gives me a good reason to get into the woods to check on my deer stand and make sure my trails are clear to keep my deer moving in the direction I want them to be moving in.

After settling in to my stand and letting the animals of the woods get used to me and go back to doing their normal routine, I like to take a look around and be sure there are no other people around and see if there has been any changes since I was in the woods last. I feel it is important to be very sure of your surroundings especially if you hunt in public land or on someone else's property. A nice afternoon in the stand could turn out to be a very bad situation if you aren't sure of what is around you.

Be sure to let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be gone. This way if something goes wrong someone will know to come looking for you and where to come looking for you after a certain amount of time has passed and you haven't shown up. Be prepared even if you aren't very far from town or home. Have a way start a fire if needed, a flashlight, a fold-able limb saw, a good knife, plenty of warm clothing, and a bottle of water are just a few essentials to have in a pack of some sort.

Deer are creatures of habit and will travel pretty much the same path each and every day until the rut sets in and they go crazy for a week or two. If you know where the deer move and how they move you can pretty much choose which one you want and when you want it. There is some skill involved and maybe a little luck but mostly a pattern.

For the past ten years or so I have been strictly a meant hunter and not a trophy hunter. The fact being that my freezers are full of venison, fish, pork, beef, and vegetables from the garden I am officially a trophy hunter this year. The extra meat will come in handy but it isn't necessary, so I can afford to be picky finally. I have shot big deer in the past but it was out of necessity not sport. This year I am going to be a sportsman I guess.

Time in the woods is the best way to get the deer you are after. The more time you put in the more successful you will be as a hunter. Spend time learning the behavior of all the animals in your next of the woods. The squirrels and chipmunks let me know when something is different in the woods or someone or something is coming through the woods. Also spend time paying attention to how the wind moves through the trees, bushes and weeds. If you pay attention to what is around you and how everything reacts to the conditions in the woods you will also be more successful.

Be careful, respect nature, and good hunting to you, my friends.

Birds....

Why do birds appeal to us ? Most people enjoy the sight of birds, even people who have never been active birdwatchers. Although birds are less like us in appearance and habits than our fellow mammals, birds undeniably hold a special place in our hearts.

One reason that birds capture our imaginations is that they can fly, while we remain trapped here on earth. What child hasn’t watched a bird fly overhead and dreamt of being up there in the sky flying alongside ? What adults have not, at one time or another, wished that they could take wing and fly away from all of their everyday troubles and cares ? Birds are natural symbols of freedom and escape. After all, what could better encapsulate our vision of pure freedom than the ability to fly off into the sunset ?

Birds can soar overhead and they can also cover great distances. They are privy to a “bird’s eye view” of a single building or a park, or an entire city or landscape, making them a perfect metaphor for obtaining a fresh perspective on a situation, or for taking a larger view of an issue.

Birds often symbolize other things, as well, such as human character traits and qualities. There’s the proud peacock, the noble eagle, the thieving magpie, squabbling crows, and billing and cooing love birds. Gliding swans are the perfect picture of grace and elegance in motion. The hawk is a symbol of war, the dove a symbol of peace.

What else attracts us to birds ? Birds have feathers, soft to the touch and a joy to look at. Plumage seems to come in an infinite variety of lovely colors and patterns, from the subtle, earthy tones of the common house sparrow to the outrageous, iridescent regalia of the showy peacock. Birds are beautiful works of art, signed by nature. Their plumage adds color and spectacle to a humdrum world. Their colors may also suggest many different locales and associations to us.

For example, those small, round, brown sparrows are homey, comforting and familiar to those of us who live in temperate climates. They are our backyard friends and neighbors. American cardinals and blue jays are highly colored, cheerful sights to behold on gray days, from the tips of their tail feathers to the fanciful crests on their heads. They are a bit more exotic, yet they are still familiar backyard friends. Then there are those birds who live in far off exotic places, such as African pink flamingos and tropical parrots, who sport wonderful tropical colors. We love them, not only for their magnificent colors, but also for their association with far-flung lands and exotic adventures.

Birds also come in a great variety of shapes and sizes, which further adds to their appeal. We can relate to them, in so far as they, and we, have two eyes, one mouth and bilateral symmetry. Yet, they are also very unlike us. They have protruding beaks, from the sparrow’s tiny jabbing beak to the toucan’s enormous appendage. They have wings, more unlike human arms than those of other mammals, or even of reptiles. In fact, when their wings are folded against their sides, birds appear to have no arms at all. They also have thin, bare legs and they have claws. Their heads and necks flow smoothly into their bodies. Their forms create graceful outlines, whether round like a chubby European robin, long like an African parrot, or sleek like a regal swan.

Yes, birds are beautiful to look at, but the beauty of birds is not confined to the visual aspects of shape and color alone, because birds also fill the air with music. They seem to offer us their song simply to entertain us, and they ask for nothing in return. Like a garden bursting with colorful flowers, the fantastic colors and songs of birds seem frivolous and out of place in a world full of harsh realities. It seems as though they were put on earth expressly to make life more beautiful. They were not, of course. Their color and song serve biological ends in the process of natural selection, but that does not prevent us from enjoying such sights and sounds. We can listen in on their free concerts and derive pleasure and serenity from the experience. We can also be amused when a few species of birds even mimic our own speech.

Another characteristic of birds that we humans respond to is the fact that they build nests. They seem so industrious and we watch with wonder as each type of bird builds its own species-specific nest, ranging from a simple assemblage of twigs to an intricately woven masterpiece of craftmanship. “Nest” is such a cozy word. Birds build their cozy nests, care for their young, and raise their families, all in the course of a single spring or summer. We admire their patience and devotion and attentive care to their offspring. We observe and marvel at a parent bird’s countless trips to and from the nest to diligently feed the helpless chicks. Birds provide us with fine role models for parenting.

Yes, birds are homebodies during the nesting season, but they also migrate. Birds are free to come and go and many cover vast distances each year, as they travel between their summer and their winter homes. They are social creatures, moving in flocks and creating great spectacles as they fly. A glimpse of a V-shaped flock of geese passing overhead thrills us and stirs something in us. We admire their strength and endurance in carrying out such grueling journeys year after year. We envy them, too, for they are free to go beyond mere political boundaries and to cross entire continents. We up north are sorry to see them part each autumn and we are heartened to see them return each spring. The return of such birds as the swallows signals the return of spring, with its promise of birth and renewal.

Each spring we are able to welcome them back into our midsts, for nearly everywhere that humans live, birds live also. Birds cover the earth. There is such a diversity of bird species to fill each ecological niche on earth and to contribute to its balance by doing such things as eating insects and dispersing plant seeds. There are the ducks and moorhens of rural ponds. There are birds who live in the forests. There are birds in the mountains and birds in the deserts. The forbidding oceans have their hardy puffins and pelicans. Even frozen, icy places have their own birds, the lovable penguins.

Birds adapt to so many different habitats and situations, including human environments. The often ignored pigeon is a beautiful bird. (I have cared for and been grateful to have known many individual pigeons over the years.) As a species, they have managed to adapt to modern cityscapes, substituting cliff-like building ledges and bridge girders for their ancestral cliffs of rock. Other bird species may be less tolerant of such disturbances and avoid the prying eyes of humans.

Wherever they choose to live, birds remain symbols of untamed nature, surviving despite man’s interference with their habitats. They remain proud and free to the present day. They are also a living link to the mysterious and fascinating history of life on our planet, as birds are the surviving heirs to the dinosaurs. One look at unfeathered baby birds, with their oversized beaks and feet, and it is easy to see the dinosaur in them.

Each of us may have our own reason, or combination of reasons, for loving birds, but their appeal is indisputable and universal. Birds represent the perfect blend of beauty, strength, grace and endurance, from the cuteness of a tiny sparrow to the majesty of an imposing raptor. Birds fill both the eye and the ear with beauty. We enjoy them. We admire them. Sometimes we envy them. They add appreciably to the quality of our lives and to the diversity of life on earth and the world would be a smaller, sadder, emptier place without them.

How to select the perfect campground.

Coffee From A French Press

The French press style of coffee making produces very rich, aromatic and tasty coffee. It uses very coarsely ground coffee that basically steeps in the brewing water for several minutes allowing all the flavours to fully extract from the coffee grinds. Because of the filtering system there is always some sediment which some people do not like.
A French press coffee maker has two parts: a straight-sided container usually made of glass, and a filter-plunger that pushes through the water to filter out the coffee after it has steeped. This plunger also serves as the lid. There are some models of French Press that are insulated which is good for keeping things hot while it steeps.

To brew coffee with a French Press, you should pre-heat the carafe while you boil your water. When ready, empty the carafe, add your coffee, and then add your brewing water. You may wish to stir the coffee grinds around to be sure all of them are in contact with water. You should now put the plunger/lid on the pot to help retain heat. DO NOT press it down yet, it needs to steep for four to five minutes (a little more or less depending the coarseness of the grind and your preference of strength).

Once you feel the coffee has brewed enough, slowly depress the plunger trapping the grounds on the bottom. Do not force the plunger. If it doesn’t want to go down, simply lift the plunger up slightly and try again. The filter can jam on grinds that are too fine. Just take your time and it will work.

Despite what some may say, it is usually best to decant the coffee into an insulated serving pot. If you leave the coffee in the French Press it will remain in contact with the grinds and keep brewing. This will quickly ruin your coffee. The other main reason to pour your coffee off is to keep it warm. French Press pots are not well insulated and coffee cools off very quickly.

The power of the rain.

When it starts raining outside an incredible amount of water beats down on the roof of your house. Your house principally does the job of protecting your house and everything in it from this rain. Most roofs are sloped in order that the water can run off and prevent heavy collections of rainwater gathering in pockets all over the roof. Jesus died on the cross. Jesus was nailed onto the cross. Yes, He was nailed to it. Have you ever taken an injection shot? Do you remember the feeling of pain that comes with a very thin needle? That also is taken away within few seconds. Now imagine getting hit with a large spike and the nail crossing through your palm, a thick nail and you are left to bleed. Now imagine the pain.

Pain, intense pain, yes, death by intense pain and Jesus died with that. By laws of science, I don’t know how much of His weight was taken by His palms, but even if the weight taken was a fraction of his body weight, the pain would been much more. And Jesus died on the cross, bearing his own weight with his palms, bleeding. Left to bleed in the afternoon sun.

Good Friday was the day He died. I read somewhere that earlier it was called God Friday. He resurrected on Easter Sunday. If one goes through the work and the teachings of Jesus, they will find nothing but selfless giving and miraculous cures. Jesus could cure miraculously because He was Son of God. But did He enjoy any material comforts? Any pleasures? His life is nothing but a chronicle of a man who suffered, but took away sufferings of others. Even His death was a very painful death.

What does Jesus’ life teach us? It teaches us not to give suffering to others but take it ourselves. It teaches us to comfort others. It teaches us selfless giving. It teaches us to forgive even if extreme pain is inflicted upon us. It teaches us to love all and hate none.

Let us celebrate Easter Sunday. Let us remember the teachings of Jesus Christ. Let us spread peace in the world. Let us start giving selflessly. Let us live selflessly. Let us all spread goodness, happiness and cheer in the world. Let us all work to remove hatred and vice from this world.

As far as I have read Easter comes from the pagan holiday Ishtar named after Isis - the goddess of fertility. the ancient Egyptians invented this holiday and it made its way into Christianity. The eggs symbolize fertility.

Fast Perfect Easy Lasagna No-Boil (Non-Ricotta, Venison or Beef)

Here is my personal recipe I have devised because I cannot stand ricotta cheese lasagna. Now, Ricotta cheese has it's uses and can be very tasty but not in lasagna in my opinion - too gritty.

Here is what you will need.

2 lbs Lean Ground Beef (or venison)
Two Jars of your favorite Spaghetti Sauce
1 box of lasagna noodles regular or gluten free (no need for no boil noodles)
1 large carton of small curd cottage cheese
2 cartons of sour cream
one small package of frozen spinach (optional)
2 lbs of mozzarella cheese
1 large onion chopped (optional)
1 can mushrooms (optional)
2 Tbs dried oregano
1 Tbs Italian seasoning
2 cloves finely chopped garlic (more or less to taste)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (more or less to taste)
Parmesan cheese
parsley flakes for the top for garnish (optional for looks only)
aluminum foil

First

DO NOT BOIL THE NOODLES - The noodles will cook with the moisture in the mix!!

In a large mixing bowl combine the cottage cheese, sour cream, and 1/4 of the mozzarella, mix well.
Set aside.

Cook the meat, the onions, garlic, oregano, and all dry ingredients(spices) thoroughly.
If you are adding the mushrooms and the spinach, add them now.
Add the spaghetti sauce to the meat mixture.

In a large 9 x 13 baking pan layer the mixtures starting with the meat mixture first, then a layer of noodles - arrange them so they completely cover the meat mixture but only one layer, then a layer of the cheese mixture about 3/8 of an inch thick or less, then another layer of noodles, then meat mixture, then noodles, then cheese mixture, then noodles, then the rest of the meat mixture and finally the rest of the mozzarella cheese over the top. Bake at 350 for one hour tented with aluminum foil to keep the cheese from browning prematurely then another 15 to 30 more minutes to brown the cheese.

Take out of the oven and let stand for at least 30 minutes before cutting sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese, and parsley flakes.

There are people who collect stamps; people who make scrapbooks or create graphic designs with their digital photos; people who love horseback riding, hiking or bicycling. Maybe you do something that you don’t even know is considered a “hobby”. Technically, anything that you engage in for fun that is outside of your occupational activities is considered a hobby- so chances are you have lots of hobbies! One of my favorite hobbies is blacksmithing, I started getting requests for my wares as a smith but I also got many requests for information. More for information on my hobby than the product of it actually.

Have you ever considered turning one of your hobbies into a business? You may be surprised at how virtually any hobby can be converted to profits, and without tremendous overhead or ridiculously high start up costs. What’s even better, you aren’t required to have a specific product to sell! In fact, you can make your knowledge of your product sell.

If you participate regularly in some sort of hobby, you are bound to know quite a bit about it. If you make scrapbooks of your family and friends, then you probably have extensive knowledge about where to get the best deals on your scrapbooking supplies, and how to create special effects on your photo album pages. Maybe you have magazines and websites that you refer to all the time for inspiration. You have the personal knowledge of what it took to get started in the hobby. For example, scrapbooking requires that you have access to supplies like paper, stickers, glue, photo albums and scrapbooking tools. In the history of any great people, sometimes there is a singular moment that so sums up that struggle and challenges the hearts of the people of the time that this moment becomes one that is both historic and mythical. In the long history the African American in this country, one such singular moment was the delivery of what has come to be referred to as the “I have a dream” speech during the historic March on Washington in August of 1963.

There are many things about this speech that are so poetic that the text of the speech has become one of the great historic texts of the nation’s history as well as of black history. That is why virtually any school child can recite the most stirring words from the speech which are…

And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

What is most striking about this text if you read the entire text is the hope. And it’s a wonderful tradition for every family to read this speech, perhaps on Martin Luther’s King’s birthday which is now a national holiday. Dr. King called upon his people to look up and look with hope toward tomorrow. But more than that, he called on all people to work together toward a shared hope, a hope of fulfilling the American dream that he discusses with such passion in his words.

The setting for the speech was on the steps of the Lincoln memorial, within view of the Congress, the reflecting pool and the White House on the National Mall in the center Washington D.C. Dr. King called it hallowed ground reflecting his deep reference and respect for the icons of this country and his deep love of country which too comes through in the speech.

But it is a speech of struggle because he spoke of the fact that black people in America were still not living in an openly free and equal status with all other citizens. Dr King did not loose touch with the reality of the tough lives African Americans were living in the United States. That is why this speech is so perfectly crafted and so perfectly delivered. It combines the harsh reality and resolve by black leaders and the African American population to make the world better for themselves and their children with a hope and an optimism that this was a country that would not put up with the oppression and discrimination that has kept black people down ever since slavery.

It is a speech that issued a call to action in the time frame of “Now” which was a call to action that many in the houses of power in our country took heed. They did take action immediately to get the process of renewal and repair of a broken social system moving in the right direction. One of the outcomes of this speech was the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 which changed the fabric of the country forever in the legal restrictions it put on discrimination in every aspect of American life.

If it had not been for the “I have a dream” speech, the March on Washington on that hot and humid August day might have just been another in the many protests and events of the civil rights era. Instead it became an iconic moment in American and black history that changed Dr. King into a national hero for black and white people alike and energized a movement and a nation to take matters into their own hands and make thing better for all people.

Blacksmithing is an ancient art of iron and metal craft. The blacksmith was a very important part of the community. He made all of the tools and hardware to sustain the way of life of the time. He made the farming implements, horse shoes and various other equine tack, hammers, hinges, handles, locks, latches, nails, pipe, just about everything you can think of made out of metal, he made all by hand. Of course he was always trying to make his job easier, which led to the invention of many, many newer tools.

When you think of a blacksmith, you immediately think about a hammer and an anvil. These are the primary hand tools but there are many more. He used a forge (the heat source) with coal being the primary fuel source, to heat the metal to working or forge welding temperature. In the early days he fed the forge air with bellows and later with hand crank or ratchet and paul blowers. The more air added to the underside of the coal through the tuyere ( the hole in the center of the forge to direct the air to the fuel without letting it fall out of the forge) the hotter the fire.

He also used may other tools to shape the metal such as swage blocks, hardy tools(the square hole in the anvil is called the hardy hole and it accepts many types of tools), pritchel tools(this is the round hole in the anvil ans also accepts many different tools), fullers(different shaped wedges for stretching steel), and various other swages and forms.

As time went on the need for faster and hotter heat was needed so other fuels were used such as LP gas, and natural gas in insulated furnaces with the invent of insulation just about any heat desired was achievable.

The blowers and bellows lead to the invent of compressed air systems and many different blower and fan designs for feeding the forges, which were then used for many different purposes.

Power hammers were invented for speed in smithing also, these hammers made blacksmithing faster easier and more efficient.

Other tools consist of drill presses, vises, grinders, sanders, fly presses, milling machines, lathes and many other machines and tools invented by and for the smith.
