manner of plants and critters and interesting people along the way. All of

23,000-acre watershed is home to a drinking water system that serves more than
a million customers, said SFPUC Peninsula Area Land Manager Jonathan Perrin,

continually on the move to spot a potential event before it happens. Watershed staff are also holding regular
training sessions to familiarize fellow responders with the water system
infrastructure, power lines, access gates, roadways, and water pickup points. Cal Fire is also planning a training burn on the watershed's San Andreas Dam for June 17, weather and other conditions permitting. </span></div>

Watershed land adjoining part of the Sawyer Camp Trail, starting the week of
May 6, to remove resprouted acacia saplings and other non-native, invasive vegetation.
The trail will remain open, but crews may need to halt pedestrian and bike
traffic for short periods when vegetation is being treated or removed. The work
will be in areas adjacent to the trail between Mile Markers 1 and 3, and will
continue for two to three weeks. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

previous vegetation removal project for habitat restoration in 2016, when we
cleared large acacias and other highly invasive plants from the same area over
a four-month period. However, the control of re sprouts and other tenacious
invasives can be ongoing if we are to protect and nurture the new native grasslands
and oak woodlands we’ve restored in their place. The historic native
habitats are vital for other native plants, butterflies, birds, and animals, many of them endangered. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Francisco Public Utilities Commission crews recently launched a series of short
projects to control invasive weeds on parts of its Peninsula Watershed land
near the Sawyer Camp Trail for approximately a one-mile stretch slightly north
of Mile Marker 1. The first project, which started Monday, February 18, is now complete. The trail remained open throughout the work period. </span></span></div>

Repair of erosion damage along the Crystal Springs/San
Andreas Pipeline adjacent to Sawyer Camp Trail is underway at two locations.
The project has an accelerated time line to facilitate completion prior to
fall/winter rains. The Trail will remain open throughout the construction process. The contractor will remove the loose soil from the erosion
sites, then compact a stable surface to hand-place interlocking concrete blocks
to create a matrix. The blocks also will be connected by cables to hold them in
place.<o:p></o:p></div>

Hikers should be vigilant as construction vehicles will need
to use Sawyer Camp Trail to convey workers and supplies to the construction
sites. There also may be some weekend work. Construction is expected to be

Peninsula Watershed’s Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail Program. It offers members of
the public their only recreational access to the normally off-limits
23,000-acre green space that harbors four local drinking water reservoirs and
the natural waters that flow into them.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">The trail itself is an approximately 13-mile stretch through
long-protected old-growth conifer forest, fragrant coastal scrub, grassy
serpentine ridgetops, and other native habitats. In the years since its 2003
opening, more than 20,000 people have participated in approximately 2,000
watershed excursions led by trained volunteer trail leaders. An additional new
trail head provides a shadier, more evenly graded entry, and our trail leader corps
is now 315 strong—with some still on board from day 1. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Access is available by reservation on selected Wednesdays,
Saturdays and Sundays, when scheduled Ridge Trail events range from a gentle

And since spiders also kill other spiders, including members of the same species, they keep their own numbers in check too. Throughout the year, they also keep contributing to the eco-community as food for neighboring larger invertebrates, birds, and small animals. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">They're particularly abundant now in meadows and other grassy areas, where up to hundreds of thousands might occupy a single acre. </span></div>
