Purposeful Dyeing

Many moons ago I acquired this jacket-styled cardigan. It was especially favoured because of the milky cream colour, but over the years it wasn't worn much at all. Before I donated this piece I wanted to see if I could get another use out of it by colour transformation. This knit was longing for an update in some magical way. And after investigating my crafting trunk I decided to dye it periwinkle! Well, it was that or a myrtle-green concoction, which I now have plans to use.

Fortunately the cardigan was made of lovely fibres that took this dye quite well. My wants did not stray too far from the [high-aiming] mission. I simply wanted this knit dyed ... period! I was over the dull colour, I wanted something fresh. Don't get me wrong, I adore cream and white garments, however I wanted this in a soft spring colour.

To Dye [or] NOT "Tie-Dye!"

To achieve designs or shades: Instead of scrunching or clamping the entire cardigan I folded it in fourths; dipping one half first front side down. Then, I let it sit for about 5min. Afterward, I dipped the other side, repeating the same way, only this time allowing it to sit for about 45min. to 1hr. (back side down with sleeves inside) slowly turning it every 10min.+/- or less. On the last turn I unfolded and let it sit a few more minutes before rinsing. Creating lighter and darker shades on the cardigan worked for me, because of its multiple seaming. Instead of just a solid flat colour, the shading gave it dimension and character.

Test out various dyes and select your favourite. Some dyes work differently, i.e. plant vs. synthetic, but the dye that I used was one that I'm familiar with; therefore to get the result wanted the cardigan needed to be in a bit longer for this blended fabric. I'm happy with the result, because it actually looks like an entirely new cardigan!

On the Fashion Tales 2012 to-do list: I obviously enjoy dyeing, so wanting to expand this art devotion is of great interest to me. I'm also working on a couple of other dyeing projects, and I've been learning techniques that were used centuries ago from great artists who are willing to show me a few tricks. I'll try to post them whenever I finish in the future whether good or indifferent.

Certainly, if you want to take on a dyeing project do ask yourself one question, "Am I ready to get my hands dirty." Because, truth be told even with gloves it's not glamourous, yet the fun and final result is worthwhile if you're fond of a craftily slice of experimentation!

Youth Talent, Industry Approved

Christian Adamsen, fashion designer and entrepreneur from Vejen, Denmark creates feminine clothing with a luxury aesthetic.

Not exactly a new kid on the block, Adamsen has been sewing since he was 12. It would be a delayed notion to say that he’s just a star in the making, as this self-taught designer has clearly exceeded a typical teen-aged pupil with an artistic devotion. Then again, what exactly is a “typical teen” these days? Certainly, there are young blogging stars, painters, and even musical wonders. However, it’s great to see designing youth making impressions in an often cut-throat economy.

At 16, Adamsen has a direct focus on an evolving market, specialising in an industry that literally affects everyone in some way. Whether it’s through a trickling effect from the runway or mere inspiration worn, it begins with forms of art.

“There are a lot of Danish designers in Denmark; if you have a technique learned in school you do it one way … but also my artistic fashion career has taken off quite rapidly. You learn things as you progress,” says Adamsen. The unconventional designer actually credits his fashion learning from YouTube tutorials, and reading books, though presently he also has a helpful patternmaking mentor.

After speaking with Adamsen about his eponymous label, there was stirring moments when listening to the acute designer express his passion, especially when talking about constructing gowns that make women feel glamourous.

“One of my most proud designs is a beautiful dress that I made for the Danish celebrity, Sarah (Louise), a long ball gown with layers, silk chiffon, and corset. I am very proud of that, says Adamsen.”

In his creations you’ll find dresses with graphic prints that are carefully printed by one of Denmark’s fine detailed printers, a working relationship that’s manifested over time. “I work on the prints in Photoshop and Illustrator … the result was beautifully graphic prints that read as a sophisticated look, says Adamsen.

“The next collection is all about luxury,” says the designer (Think Dubai, Egypt’s gold colouring, and silks.) However, for the fall 2012 collection, “I’m inspired by the moon, snow, [and] crystals. It will be more dramatic with deep reds and black crystals. I have a jewellery maker making a corset in jewellery,” says Adamsen.

Until recently, Adamsen’s full collection has all been produced by himself, but for the impending line it will be the first time being produced by other people. So what’s next? The designer will graduate this year and will continue working on his flourishing label, which will hopefully include expanding within the UK and US boutiques in the future.

The Modern Gentry

Tweed. Plaid. Hounds-tooth. Actually, all types of textures and patterns forever seem to influence me in some way. The powerful balance of wearing two contrasting patterns can often be satisfying.

I've always appreciated strong patterns and fabrics, and love it especially when used in womenswear. Specifically when they're used in wide-legged trousers, fitted blazers, or even a long overcoat. Oh, how I long to inherit the old jackets and coats of my grandfathers. I also wouldn't mind possessing a few original buttons that I'd likely use in DIY crafting sessions.

How does one wear historic patterns or silhouettes (think hunting and shooting apparel), or some that are normally tied strictly to menswear? Well, fortunately, there are ways of achieving a modern look when wearing these patterns while maintaining your individual style.

The genuine sophistication of certain patterns can be tailored to a modern-casual ensemble without decreasing its ingrained refinement. For example, today, one might combine a favourite jean or feminine blouse. However, I gravitated toward the accessories department.

DIY: The Glam Brooch

Oh, I feel the presence upon me ... the textural sparkle and twinkles of gems, and you know what that means? It's time to get glamourous! Understanding that for "some" of us that means just about everyday. As for me, well I've recently been eager to create a glam brooch, a versatile trim to add to a favourite hat or blazer.

After gathering a few remnants of fabric that I initially regarded toss worthy; of course I decided to grace them with one last look ― only to find an end use for the sheer pieces. Enter, the glam brooch. Enjoy!

Materials needed:
Leather or PU
Glue-gun
Scissors
Small scraps/1X1 pieces of sheer material
Clear all-purpose glue/Sealant
Gems, stones, acrylic beads, etc.
Loose glitter
Brooch pin back
Empty stone settings (optional) Easier way to manually place fabric around gem)
Sewing machine/Needle & thread (either)

Cut a rectangular piece of leather to size preferred. Mine is approx. 3" x 1.5" or so.
Fold pieces in half or sandwhich them together (with fabric face-to-face), stitch all around rectangular shape or whatever shape that you create. (If you don't want to use a sewing machine, with right sides up, carefully glue your pieces together. Or by folding in each inside edge of the leather use a needle and thread to make a whipstich or straight stitch around the leather.)

Next, for visual sake I arranged my gems on the leather beforehand to get an idea of what I wanted.

Take a circular cut piece of fabric (lace, or sheer, or netting material), slightly larger than each gemstone, and one by one cover a gem. If you use a larger size or square sheer piece make sure to twist the bottom ends and tuck underneath, still leaving it fairly flat on the bottom. Holding in place, glue back bottom of gem. Let dry. (If you use hot glue wait a few minutes.) *You can carefully place each covered gem on wax paper until dry. Cut excess material from gem back. Repeat steps on each gem that you want covered with fabric.

I only wanted a few gems covered to give my brooch character. Place a small amount of glue on the leather areas that you want your gems to be positioned, then place each gem on glued area. Let dry completely.

Use scissors to cut around the shape of your brooch, carefully cutting in-between the spaces of the gems that are hanging along outter edge from leather. Hence, I've made an irregular shape (for the body of the brooch) by using teardrop, square and circular sized gems, along with other various shapes. Take sealant or all-pupose glue to dab small amounts atop the gems. Lightly sprinkle brooch with glitter to add a glam effect. Let it sit to dry. Afterward, brush a coat of sealant/clear glue to lock-in the glitter.

Lastly, use glue to adhere the metal pin backing to the brooch. You may also use a clip backing or add a clip to the pin back, making your brooch more versatile, additionally as a hair clip or hat adornment.

I loved it so much that I made a second version!

Foot-Prints

Who doesn't love a great print, one that wakes your feet up in loud or charming hues? And, with each step your feet receiving a pep-talk to parade the streets on an early morning. Whether animal inspired or an enchanting floral, prints have evolved greatly.

Patterned and printed footwear have conquered the territory from tops and bottoms to, now must-have complimentary outfit companions ― and deem themselves of much importance as function. Although, there has been hazy areas in the "function" department recently, leaning toward an elite high-tower instead of a stable home of practicality.

We've seen the comeback of the printed sole stylishly pouncing the catwalks in many prior seasons. They are the dazzle in breaking the ice with not your typically generic intro or selling soundbite. Rather, your sole conversing footwear is the new elevator pitch.

Shoes telling the story of good tastes, clever shopping strategies, daring abilities, and perhaps the goings on behind the boundaries of one's closet. Why not, right? It's often necessary to interject a busy heel with an ensemble in need of a pick-me-up! What better way to show a slice of your personality than with shoes.

Let's face it, shoes [often] are the accessory!
Printed soles can brighten a fashion heart. Shoes generally may even alter the tone of your day, especially when being well-received from strangers. We search, stare, maybe compare prices and buy! Then, all it takes is one strut, prance, or glide across a surface to bond us with a specific print or sole of choice. Witnesses are present and whether silently admiring or vociferously detesting the type that we've chosen, it exemplifies our style. A reflection in the manner of our dress ... if worn on any occasion.

The Culture Club

Undoubtedly inspiration comes in various ways for me. Thus, I managed to muster items that I haven't worn in a while. The gathering session did not take long, because I halted at one of my favourite cardigans. The colourblocked cozy knit with original elbow patches! Oh yes, I do fancy the patches, in fact, I've several articles of clothing that sport the elbow patch very well ... in my opinion.

A fitted retro blazer and vintage tweed jacket comes to mind when instantly thinking of patched styles from my wardrobe. Even a few professors or liberty uniform elements may abruptly enter one's thoughts when pondering about who wore past patches. Though, in earlier times it was more for functional purposes and less of a fashion statement.

But, the beauty in keeping garments that you love is that it may exceed any fashion cycle, resurface within years or decades! I decided to bring back a worldly medley of what is keeping me warm and styling today; which also includes my latest crafting piece, a convertible hat made from vintage fur. Not quite the ushanka, but obviously inspired from one.

Throw in some tulle, lace, and a vintage lustrous bag ... well then I believe we have my cultured day look! Are you donning any different threads this weekend to stay warm and comfortable during your leisure activities?

Getting Back to Normal

Unaltered and accidentally taken this photo happened when trying to turn off my camera, and quickly before heading out to catch a flight. Afterward, I sifted through images as I normally do deleting second-guessed ones, also keeping many that seemed only loved by me.

Although some images taken from holiday time spent were great others weren't very much, but along came this shot (above) ... one that I just loved. Certainly, it is blurry, however at that specific moment it really captured the essence of how I felt: slightly out of focus, yet still able to get through the day and figure out what tasks were needed to be complete.

Everything is much better now that I am slowly getting back to normal. Are you managing? Perhaps, you've already gone through your swing shift and now able to enjoy being at ease. It's interesting how just one major holiday can transform your regular routine, and so rapidly. As for the rest of us (myself included) it may take a little bit longer to entirely change back into professional gears and work-related [day] methods.

So, yes I am back ... happily very busy, and propelling forward with gigantic breaths as I continue to enjoy this incredible new year, which may also have me buying a new pair of superwoman shoes just to keep up! Pardon the delay, but this layover has now ended.

Love at Second Sight: An Accessories Tale

I do believe that I'm not the only one who's browsed a site or two in search of an extravagant bauble to accompany her personal style trunk! I'm certain that there's many of you out there whose wants, wishes, and needs may take note in playing musical chairs on a rainy day. Right?

The thrill of finding a great item is always liberating, especially when it's by a designer that you know and love. It doesn't necessarily have to be one that your peers cherish as much as you do. When this happens to me I get anxious to wear my new stylish item out, occasionally even planning an entire outfit around said fashionable item.

However, there are times when I browse through the Internet or enter boutiques in search of nothing in particular, yet find countless items that I adore ... and truly want! The need is often a savvy fill in the blank, a pre-acquiring reality check, as I do not need much.

Nonetheless, when I see accessories that silently speak to me ― winking at me by its glistening clasp or hard to find colour, or when it's simplicity merely done at its best, well, then it's love at second sight! It's an item that I carefully think about although some accessories can easily be a stylish love affair at first view (that is until one's eyes follow the outlines of the staggering price tag so marvelously attached.)

It doesn't take millions from your wallet to browse first, nor does it require you to sign on a dotted line. In fact, I recently came across a stunning pair of Hervé Léger shoes (that I'll wear very soon), and wouldn't have had the chance to score them if I had rushed to buy another pair of heels that I'd seen, and loved at first sight.

Every now and then, it's good to splurge ... diving into the high quality bin and say to yourself either, "Perhaps, I'll buy this ... one day," or "I love this. I want this. I really could use this, and definitely would wear [close to] forever." Whichever it may be, an acute deliberation often aids you in the long run.

Dream a sumptuous dream, because it often becomes a fashionable reality, if you want it to! BUT, in case it doesn't, here's several accessories (for your inspiration) that I'm struck by at the moment―; some in my budget, some far out of the range, and everything in between. High hopes, good styles, and a full round of appreciation.

DIY- Special Treatments

Happy New Year lovelies! To get back into the swing of things, I wanted to start off with a quick DIY. Looking ahead there's a vast amount of projects that I want to accomplish this month. I decided to create a a good old-fashioned personal inspiration board of tearsheets, essentially a collage of bits that influence me. Of course, it's quite easy to do it online; however the visual, yet tangible elements of inspiration often aids me more in semi-developed projects at times.

A Glimpse of Inspiration

No Hassle Tassels!
Here's a pair of what I like to call "To-Go Tassels," accessories that I made for my shoes. They may be used as a trim embellishment for tops, pockets, and more!

Take a strip of fringe or running yardage of tassel fabric, cut approx. 3-3.5"L/ 8-9cm, {measurement may vary if you want your tassels to be wider or skinnier} fold each side toward the (inner) center. Press. Dot a small amount of glue under each fold. Let dry. Finger press close. Take a needle and thread to create sewn loops starting from one top-edge, and ending on the opposite (bottom) edge. Secure tightly by double knotting ends with thread. Cut excess threads. Repeat for second tassel.

Use fabric glue or metal/plastic glue to adhere one clip to each of the tassels. You're finished!
*If you want your To-Go Tassels even more versatile, try adding a ribbon to the top-edge of each tassel instead of a metal clip. This way you can tie them to your shoes, ankles, and neck along your collar.

Quick Blouse Details:

To add a dashing touch to your shirt or blouse, try one of my favourites: neck ruffles, gathered trimmings. I wanted to give my boring shirt a bolt of excitement, so I decided to create ruffles for a couple of them.

To do this take approx. 1" W X 6" L+/- (depending on your neck length) of contrast/amazing fabric. Fold each end inward 1/8". Top-stitch. Make a basting stitch lengthwise going down the center. Holding the top edge pull the bottom edge side of one of the excess threads. As you do this gathers will form. When you reach a desired ruffle/gather make a staying stitch in the center, lengthwise once more this time securing the gathers together. Clip excess threads.

Stitch a 1/4" W elastic band to each side of the ruffle. Now, you have a neck treatment for your shirt! (See images.) I've added brass button details on my collar. To do this just mark hole placement, and add a brass snap/button to the ends of each collar with a hammer or sewing rivet gun. Use the same guide if you want to make variances of this, I also created a crochet and pleated version. Mission complete!

*Lastly, here's a sneak peak below of my newly designed clutches and bags that I've been working on... What I created with old [woolly] printed yardage.

Daydreaming Casually With Glam Visions

Well, for my last post of 2011 I leave you with a casual ensemble that I loved simply because of the easy colouring. I slipped into this outfit for crafting comfort. The colour block aspect was an afterthought, nonetheless it inspired me to don my DIY fringe chain necklace.

I have been truly blessed with new ventures this year, and as mentioned before also looking forward to the New Year ― one that will hopefully include conquering fears, new exciting responsibilities, and allowing more of those daydreaming thoughts to manifest into a triumphant reality.

Of course, as majority of people tend to do, the making of promises to ourselves, some may even have resolutions that they may hold, however I prefer continuing to create personal life/career goals that I know will be practical for my lifestyle. I do challenge myself with some new goals, with the hope of succession. Yet, if I also deviate away from them I know that it is still okay.

I hope that whatever you choose whether it's a long term or short-term goal, (or merely considering the thought of what you want to accomplish during the year) that you do it in your own way. Your plan, your time-line. Without comparison of others ― your goal cannot be wrong, because it's your's and your's alone.

Here's relaxed and casual me, and my version of a modernised vintage-glam twist; also better known as, what I wore to a holiday dinner with friends.

For me, this season has been a memorable one. I have been gone for a little while travelling about... visiting family and on my way to finish up a work project. I am definitely looking forward to the great events, and blessings that 2012 will bring.

Style: Me

There's a moment when you have a funny memory, one that's reminiscent of how you used to dress in your childhood or a mere 5 years ago? Of course, you'd find the humour in it now, because perhaps you don't mind donning a particular colour anymore ... you don't wear spikes or chains the way you used to, or maybe you're very happy that mixing patterns today is appreciated on an entirely different level than when you were growing up.

Nevertheless, looking back on how I used to actually dress even just a few years prior, as far as the attitude of dress, not too much has changed. Certainly, I've acquired new tags, and have allowed embellishments to become one of my neighbouring companions, however I am still me! Still a fan of altering details embedded in the seams; still a progressive fashion pupil, yet would believe to have inspired some who've stumbled across my journey.

This is one of those outfits that I probably would have never worn in my childhood typically, given the fact that I used to dislike dresses. I loved skirts, tailored pants, jackets and boots. During those times I'd wear loud colours, uniformed attire, and sometimes art influenced concoctions of my own creations. With each year and decade variety became the norm. "Hhmm, you're an eclectic sort," I'd hear ... yes, it may have been true, but during that period it wasn't actually a compliment!

Though tamed on the outside at times, I am still fashionably wild at heart. I am refined, artistically inclined, and complexly seasoned. I am modern and dated. There are days I am shaken, and some days moved and inspired by others. My fashion sense plays a melody of classical, and jazz, with a rock and soulful interlude. But, grace remains within my individual style.

Cooler Weather Brings Haute Fashion: That’s How The Saying Goes Right?

Cooler weather has made it’s way in and it leaves me feeling a definitive need to dress up lavishly. Some girls have been frocked fancifully for the entire month of Dressember. I think it’s important to make the effort to look extra stylish in the Winter months. I’ve been decorating myself glamorously in festive jewel tones: emerald, crystal, ruby with gold making and appearance every now and again also. My wardrobe has definitely become darker as I use lots of navy and black basics letting my accessories do the talking.

Holiday Twirls: Gracefully

Hello lovelies! Are you all about ready for the holidays? Even though life, work, and, well a few last minute shopping moments have been quite hectic I did manage to find time to just relax. The other day before wrapping, shipping, and packing items (preparing for the impending festivities), I'd forgotten about how much fun it was to twirl around in an outfit. So, I took a few snapshots to let loose in the day's ensemble.

I recently spoke to a few long-distance friends and it was so nice to catch up on each other's lives; the details of new traditions, and even new engagements being told. But, there was one thing that I kept hearing from a couple of others ... the stressful season had began to take a toll on a few of my friends and co-workers.

Forget about the chaos of "buy, buy, and buy them even-more" mode for a minute! Breathe and just relax for a moment ... fretting will only take the fun out of it! It is understandable, especially with being bombarded with displays of red and green, commercials luring one into acquiring the latest gadgets, and views of what a perfect holiday tree should look like deluged with gifts underneath. But, don't let it steal your joy and more importantly take out the beauty from appreciating the holiday.

Today, I was actually supposed to pick-up a few items for an upcoming Christmas party. Instead, I chose to unburden myself from battling the crowds. I wrote cards, made ornaments, and browsed succulent recipes ― I naturally found time to make a few unnecessary twirls in this skirt! It felt good and it also took away any edge of holiday stress that was there.

If you're like my family and love shopping and giving anyway, then you know that this time of year really is no different then any other time when you find an item to purchase that reminds you of someone. We do occasions: holidays and even birthdays a bit differently. Sometimes, we merely give a gift during the year for no apparent reason a ... "hi, this reminded me of you and I thought you'd love this," type of gift.

This time of season to me means that I just may do the gifting a bit differently. I may ponder about it more, seek out a specially unique item, and even wrap it beautifully!

However, my favourite part of the season is the holiday decor, the stunning lights (some of which may bring an overwhelming smile to my face), and watching classic holiday films ... by the fireplace of course!

Men in Fashion: Maryland's New Entrepreneurs

Times have surely changed if I ponder about the early days of when I was attending university ― reminiscent of only having to be concerned about academics, attendance, or having a few assignments would seem quite boring these days, especially when some youth of today are as innovative and technologically inclined as any seasoned CEO might be.

With an evolving industry like fashion, being tenacious, resourceful, and truly passionate can aid one in any economic climate. And new on-line boutique owners Antwan Jones and Chet Robinson are two men in fashion who know firsthand about using their passion to start a business from the ground up. Their new on-line shop, TRVISTIC [Truh-Vih-stik] is quickly becoming a must-stop and browse cyber destination! The inspiring duo have taken what was once a mere business concept and successfully executed their vision into a viable reality.

I sat down to chat with the Baltimore, Maryland-based gents (who are both in their early twenties) to talk about their new venture and the future of their on-line shop.

Just nearly three months old and initially called the Iconic Boutique, Trvistic was born. So what does this Trvisitc word actually signify? "It's a made-up word and centered around all of the qualities of fashion ... it's artistic, unique, bold, and stood out to me, said Jones." Hhmm ... catchy word with an interesting sound of pizazz ... Well, it works!

Robinson, co-owner and fashion merchandiser of the shop credits Jones for being the master force and energy driver behind Trvistic's business. But, the continuing excellence of Trvisitic definitely has proven that having a solid trustworthy partner is essential to the growth of their business.

The store has already carried known brands such as Whitney Eve, Amanda Christine, and Hellz Bellz, amongst many others. However, the boutique also caters to the emerging designer and actively supports local and independent talent.

From jewellery to party dresses, Trvistic offers handpicked fashion and beauty merchandise (with worldwide shipping), and all ranging from $20-90. You'll find edgy items such as the Monet inspired shawl jacket, King Kong spiked earrings, and even Laruicci Jewellery. The eye-hooking affordability of Trvistic's selections will certainly keep you staying current in playful fashion!

These entrepreneurs carefully choose labels that they feel share an adoration of providing diverse products for the modern woman. "We're open to feedback ... and designers can contact me to collaborate with different ideas," said Robinson. For Jones and Robinson the dream may have only begun, however they're currently working on expanding Trvisitic by adding men's wear and children's wear to the genres of the boutique very soon.

Something tells me by the time of their collegiate commencement these two may in fact be on the rise in a few other territories as well.

Ahem ... A Birthday-Thank You

Although, originally started as a travelling and styling catalogue, the FASHION TALES heart has always remained the same ... contributing in the support of independent artists, and sharing my voice on fashion. There are times when things may not always be on trending tune, but it's a guarantee over here that you'll always hear my personal melodic notes of fashion.

When I dismantled the initial travelling blog, it was for necessary reasons, being that I had no clue of what blogging was, or any inkling of social media. I was extremely focused on other industry activities. However, a year later I began to walk into new territory and wanted to continue sharing my passions for design, vintage, and emerging talent.

I am so happy that I stuck it out through times of mere humble beginnings, and even times of painfully staying up in the wee hours of the night learning (more about the blogging world.) Just as in daily life, it is through blogging where I've also met some amazing people, and still have loads of you to actually meet in the near future.

Thank you friends for your ongoing support of the blog. I am truly grateful! You have encouraged me to show more of my style, talent, and ramblings on life in general. But, also through inspiring community allowing me to learn more about yourselves.

A YEAR OF STYLE and INSPIRATION: Click images for the memory!

About a year or so ago I would have never posted pictures of my outfits. I was confident in my work life, helping others style their wardrobe, designing, and being in the background of the fashion world. Yet, for some reason I did not have a hankering to show my everyday wardrobe; perhaps that's because at that time I only viewed fashion blogs that had perfectly snapped this, and premium designer that ensembles posted! Sure, I was into labels as well (and I still am), however I also had an undeniable enchantment for vintage, antique home items, and unusual silhouettes, in addition to handmade creations.

It took me a few visits to new fashion blogs and several clicks from adverts to catch my eye. Afterward, I started following others who shared my love of unique style, original content, and vintage.

It was bloggers like YOU who showcased fashion images that spoke to me ... ones that were not found in the pages of a high-fashion glossy. Some of your independent styles were so inspirational that I had to say to myself, "Hey, I'd wear that too!" And, I knew it was time to show the person behind the blog, despite the fear that no one would care! Of course, I did not have to, but I wanted to! There was an eagerness that came over me, and I wanted to reveal myself in a way that others could see my everyday wears, read my thoughts, and possibly even relate to!

I say all of this to you to come celebrate with me because baby ... it's my blog's birthday!

Well, I never actually did a birthday post last year so, HAPPY first-2nd BIRTHDAY FASHION TALES!

DIY: The Leather Sessions

I needed black leather for new project and decided to take some of the unused pieces to design a clutch-styled bag. The initial vision: creating a bag with an aged appeal.

Getting caught up in the excitement of craft time, I immediately had to write down a few more ideas for my fabric, which resulted in adding contrasted lining. You may remember viewing this material here. Needless to say, there was loads of inspiration in the work-space. I hope that you like it!

Materials:
Leather - pieces cut to your desired size of bag
contrast fabric for lining (cut pattern of bag)
Scissors
Buckle or trim
Contrast fabric for lining
Chain
Sealant
Magnets (heavy duty) or snaps
Lobster claw (2)
Spray paint

Aged Beauty:
To start, I cut out a pattern that I made in the shape that I preferred. Mine has an asymmetrical flap. Next, I took my cut leather pieces and used solid spray-paint to colour the material. You may use gloss finish, however for this project I wanted a matte finish because I was using a gloss sealant for the end result. After you've coated the leather to your liking, let dry.

Custom Details:

I began sewing my bag pattern with the lining separately because I added small inside loops (.25"), this is so that my bag can be worn with the chain (shoulder strap) or without. Add lobster claw closures to each end of chain. Instead of using the face-side of the leather, for the outside flap I turned it over to use the suede side. This allowed me to mix textures and have the unique aesthetic that I was envisioning.

Lastly, magnets were added for secure closure ... the buckle tab is also not solely for closing the clutch, it's versatile width can accommodate my on-the-go needs if I happen to carry a wider item, hence the longer tab length.

There are various ways to achieve the aged leather effect, some use crackle, or use an antique coloured paint, but I wanted to control my affected area. To do this, I completely sewed my bag, and began to carefully fold and bend areas that I wanted the paint to be cracked (looked aged) with my fingers. When doing this you may use a small dry brush to dust away excess pieces.

After I was pleased with the aged area of the leather I used a sealant to lock-in the finished look! You may also use a glue sealant, brush on, or spray sealant of your choice, which may be acquired at a local crafting, art, or paint supply.

Let's face it, if you're like me and have a very diverse group of friends then chances are all of them aren't into everything that sparkles, a highbrow combination of colours, or smack you in the face prints! WHAT? I know, take a deep breath it's okay ... we do forgive them and still love them!

Here's a different list of items to think about for the semi-fashionista, techie, and gent, amongst other personalities to buy for this magical season.

Oh, and yes there will likely be a tad more to view in these next few weeks. However, if you are in the beginning stages of holiday shopping there's still hope and extended deals awaiting. The Closet Cried, Proud Mary

Sometimes I peruse through my closet finding items that reminds me of the beginning stages, schooling, craft time in the workshop and historical art influences. This jacket is one of them! This was probably the second jacket in design school that I ever made. Of course, viewing it now I see things that I would alter, and perhaps different panels or button options that I'd suggest to myself.

But, the funny thing about going through your past work as an artist is that it evokes a certain period in one's life. When I analysed specific areas of the jacket I could see what my initial strengths were as well as my weaknesses as a pupil. I even remember what I was going through in the midst of the assignment.

The amusing chortle that came from my room as I discovered this jacket deeply set the following mood ... one filled with contentment and thankfulness of collegiate completion. Fortunately, life has a wonderful way of revealing to us our humble beginnings, therefore we should not be ashamed nor shy of how things initially start out. Whether it be life choices or like this, a design project; it is the finishing, the striving, and the active doing that makes all of the difference.

So, I decided to wear this jacket out with pride, because it fits and it's finished! Proud Mary, I called this jacket, as it's brought nothing but confident smiles to my face today.

Lace: A Re-construction To MY Style

A week or so ago before the hustle and bustle of a lengthy work week I decided to kick boredom in the bum one day and dye some lace. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, then you've seen the lovely result, but I've also been preoccupied with finishing holiday shopping and just getting around to wearing and sharing.

In all honesty I was not in love with this dress initially, because I wasn't extremely keen on the collar design on me. However, it was quite easy to slash, dye, and sew my thoughts deep into the seams.
The vision was simple: creating an ombre aesthetic, yet making the dress look slightly vintage. No sketch was required, rather the passion for a successful outcome, and merely being in good health afterward was going to be the ultimate reward; this would be a high-fumed project.

On the Agenda:
I flattened the collar, cut the length significantly, and altered the sleeves making it 3/4 length ... it was starting to look better to me. Then I slashed the ruffles from the collar and re-sewed them in a more pleasing way, at least to my eyes.

I imagine this dress, (once all black with grey stitching) had an overdose of frill appeal intentionally, because that must have been the trend at that time, but I potentially saw something else in this silhouette. My dear friend gifted me this dress a long time ago, knowing that I'd hear the little designing voice inside of me wanting to shake things up a bit; only to aid in the betterment of the dress of course! Yes, there were times when I wore the dress as it was intended, however through the years I've felt that it's my duty to do whatever is needed to make me LOVE this dress!

This little art project had me reminiscent of my design school days, having more time on my hands to dive into more crafty/art experimentation.

Next, I analysed the fabric and began to bleach the collar and sleeves, then I hung them to air dry, and to see if I achieved the result that I wanted. Lastly, I used a spray bottle mixed with tan dye, and another bottle mixed with a small amount of bleach, both with adding water and began to sporadically saturate the lace, some areas with more coverage than others. After a couple of hours I washed the dress twice, and hung it out to dry. Here's the result.

*Note: Always know your fabrics: Testing first is good beforehand, if you are uncertain about the fibres. All materials dye differently, so proper research is necessary unless you enjoy unwanted surprises!

Vanity + Vintage #13

Modern Girl, The New Bohemian:

I've been wearing this non-stop! I purchased this hat about a month ago to add to my collection, which seems to put me in a hybrid of reverie every time I wear it out; between a new-age western dame and an arbiter of mystic fashions. I bought it because I (loved it, and) realised that I didn't own a large-brimmed solid brown hat. Believe it or not, this style in particular, has quickly become a favourite. I'm certain it has to do with the enormous brim that may be contoured to my liking.

Enter: the vintage clutch! This clutch is significant to me because when I acquired it when I wasn't actually seeking anything for myself. I had a list of items to find for a past styling job, I was so focused on the mission at hand that this little treasure almost passed me by.

However, I did hear the fashion angels sing in a soft ballad - a faint whisper calling my name, yet with a guilt-free intention and only to make its presence known. So, I turned around to glance at the caramel colour, touched it twice, and was captured by the woven details. Then, I began to open and close it as if I needed to get the maximum use out of it in seconds ... this lead to the instant confirmation that I'd be taking this clutch home ... and I did!

With the volatile climate in pretty much every location, I decided to wear cable-knit tights and take the new hat out for the world to view. It seemed to be a plausible reason to wear it once more. The next few work days were followed by donning long gloves and a tailored blazer of course. But, for now, I'm enjoying these threads.
