Kolkata KnightRiders gets a consecutive win against Royal Challengers Bangalore on todays match. They have won by 7 wickets with 4 balls to sphere.

After his fire-fighting effort with the bat on Friday, Angelo Mathews starred with the ball for Kolkata Knight Riders to pin down Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Gardens. Bangalore were left to thank Jacques Kallis, who made a mad dash from South Africa after playing the Pro20 final on Friday evening, for holding the innings together after their young batting talent failed.

Bangalore's surprise move to open with Sreevats Goswami didn't work out. The pint-sized Goswami was hemmed in by a series of Charl Langeveldt bouncers, not discomforted by them but unable to score. Goswami looked to back away and heave the ball towards the leg side, connecting once to get a boundary but fell top-edging an attempted cut to third man.

Manish Pandey also didn't replicate the wonderful form of his domestic season, looking tentative in his short stay before his attempt to flat-bat Mathews down the ground ended in a bottom-edge onto the stumps.

Next in Bangalore's youth brigade was Virat Kolhi, talked up by his coach Ryan Jennings as a future Indian captain, but he lasted only four deliveries before striking a dipping delivery from Murali Kartik to deep midwicket. With two deliveries left in the Powerplay, Bangalore were down to 20 for 3.

Kolkata's new-ball bowlers had done their job, and they were backed up by some intelligent bowling from Mathews and Kartik to put Bangalore on the mat. Mathews sent down several slower bouncers which the batsmen struggled to pick, and Kartik varied his pace and effectively used the assistance provided by the track.

It was Kartik who provided the fervent Eden Gardens crowd its next chance to scream. Bangalore's new signing, Eoin Morgan, had started his IPL career confidently with a sensationally-timed off-drive for six off the second delivery he faced, but he was bowled by a short, slow ball from Kartik, through with his reverse-sweep before the ball arrived.

All the while Kallis was starved of strike, though he had shown glimpses of form, including a ferocious lofted cover drive. He set about re-building with the help of another veteran, Rahul Dravid, putting on 38 with some old-school textbook batting. Dravid was looking in fine touch before he contrived to drag a full, wide ball from Mathews onto the stumps.

Yusuf Pathan-100 of 37 balls, though Rajasthan Loose

The second-fastest Twenty20 hundred, a 37-ball assault from Yusuf Pathan, as delicate as it was brutal, wasn't enough on a day in which precious little was contributed by the other Rajasthan Royals players. Despite Mumbai Indians piling on their biggest score in the IPL, it required special death bowling from Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga to deny Rajasthan 19 runs in the last two overs.

Yusuf's onslaught came after Mumbai's youngsters Ambati Rayudu, considered unlucky to have not played for India yet, and Saurabh Tiwary powered the home side to what seemed a massive total, but it turned out to be one that just about dodged the Yusuf-shaped bullet.

The it's-good-to-be-back ad campaign of the IPL could well have been meant exclusively for Yusuf. In his first innings back in India, he shook a dying match up and gave Mumbai a right scare. The Yusuf show began when Rajasthan needed 143 off 57. He scored 54 off the next 11 balls he faced, 26 other deliveries got him 46, and when he finally got out he left Rajasthan 40 to get off 17 deliveries.

Of the nine fours and eight sixes he hit in a frenetic period of play, three shots stood out - and they were not sixes. The length deliveries and full tosses were all murdered, but in the 13th over - he was 57 off 22 by then - Ryan McLaren bowled a decent enough yorker to him. Yusuf opened the face late, beautifully late, and guided it for four. The next ball was not more than a couple of inches short of being a yorker, but on the stumps, and he managed to get under it, and still hit it to long-off for four. The third yorker of the over was neither wide nor straight, in between, and he leaned back to make space and steered it even later than the one before. More brutal hits preceded a moment of inspiration for Mumbai.

Arguably the best fielder in India, R Satish, returning from ICL, followed up his direct-hit run-out and a terrific caught-and-bowled with Yusuf's dismissal. He bowled full and straight to Paras Dogra, the other batsman, then dived in his follow through to field the ball, and reverse-flicked - blind to the stumps - to catch a backing-up Yusuf short.

Dogra, who had scored 18 off 20 in the 107-run stand until then, opened up in the same over, and hit two fours and two sixes to bring down the target to 19 off 12.

Zaheer and Malinga, though, with Harbhajan Singh injured and not available to bowl, performed like champs. Eleven near-yorkers from the duo in the last two overs meant even the two wides they bowled were not enough for Rajasthan.

It was fitting for Mumbai that Indian cricketers helped them come back at crucial times: they had become the first team in the three seasons of IPL to play with only three overseas players. Kapil Dev and friends could afford a wee smile too. Rayudu, Sathish and Ali Murtaza - who took a wicket with his first ball - are all returning from the ICL.

Rayudu and Tiwary added 110 runs in 63 balls to help Mumbai Indians recover from a triple-strike in the first third of the innings. Shane Warne didn't have to wait too long to find out if Tendulkar "will open and face [Shaun] Tait", with Tendulkar walking out to open with Sanath Jayasuriya.

Jayasuriya took apart Dimitri Mascarenhas, and Tendulkar did the honours for Tait, taking 10 runs from the four balls that Tait bowled to him. Mascarenhas hit back with two wickets in one over, and at 70 for 3 in 6.3 overs, the onus was on the Indian batsmen.

Rayudu immediately showed glimpses of what made observers talk of him as a potential international. He wristily flicked the first ball he faced for four, lest anybody forget he's from Hyderabad.

It was just as well that Tendulkar didn't survive long enough to give the viewers the much-awaited contest against Warne: the latter was off colour, going for 29 runs in three overs. There was no turn for Warne, and he bowled too many half-volleys. Tiwary took full toll, and hit him down the ground for two fours and a six. By the time Warne took himself off, Mumbai had reached 121 in 12 overs. Tiwary had reached 26, and Rayudu 23, off 17 balls each.

Part-time offbreaks from Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Yusuf went for full-time hitting. Rayudu hit three successive Jhunjhunwala deliveries for a huge six and fours either side of long-on. When he next smacked a six off Yusuf, he had reached 53 off just 30 deliveries, and Mumbai had rocketed to 166 in 16.3.

Tiwary reached his fifty by hitting Amit Uniyal, whose change-up delivery was the quicker one, to the long-on boundary. In fact it was all clean hitting down the ground from the two: out of the 108 they scored between them, only 16 came behind square.

Rayudu and Tiwary didn't see the innings to the close, but Harbhajan Singh and Ryan McLaren contributed to Tait's horror day, taking 22 off his last two overs. Each one of those runs mattered in the end.

IPL bidding process for the two new teams delayed

More corporates are expected to throw their hat into the ring as the IPL bidding process for the two new teams begins afresh on Tuesday.

Reports emanating from different quarters indicate that business houses were now looking at the team auction more proactively after it "has started to make business sense".

Atul Chordia, chairman and chief executive of Panchshil Realty and part of the consortium bidding for the Pune team, was quoted as telling a business daily that they were not concerned about the bid price going up.

"It has to be commercially viable, we are answerable to our shareholders," Chordia said.

Kerala's IPL team owning dream has also been revived with reports of the Muthoot Pappachan Group "assessing the new terms and conditions".

Earlier, film director Priyadarshan and actor Mohanlal had pulled out of the race citing the clause that the net worth for a team had to be Rs 5,000 crore.

But they are not the only ones bidding for a team from God's own country.

According to reports, the Ashok Piramal Group is part of a consortium that includes the Jaypee Group, Shree Ram Group of Industries, Rosy Blue India Pvt. Ltd and Anchor Electricals Pvt. Ltd, which is bidding for Kochi.

With these developments, it seems that Kochi will also join the list for the top bidded teams - something that was expected from the cities of Ahmedabad, Pune and Nagpur.

In fact, Ahmedabad had been tipped to win one of the two bids with top corporates like Adani Enterprises, Sahara Group and ICICI planning to 'show them the money'.

The IPL seems to have got its act together and the initial idea of expanding the base of the tournament to other parts of the country could now actually come true.

Potential franchisees can bid for cities that include Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur, Dharamsala, Vizag, Rajkot, Cuttack, Baroda, Kochi, Indore and Gwalior.

Bids will be accepted till 10 am on March 21, following which they will be opened in Chennai on the same day.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have not won the title yet, but when it comes to creating brand value they are miles ahead of the rest.

In yet another marketing ploy, Kolkata Knight Riders have announced a ticket for Rs 32,000 per day that includes access to the super speciality enclosures at the Eden Gardens and to the post-match parties.

That means you can rub shoulders with the who's who of the cricket world and the Bollywood fraternity for a price that is almost five times expensive than the maximum priced ticket of Rs 6,500.

It is also reported that this marketing move has been devised in an attempt to maximise profit with the Eden Gardens' capacity nearly halved to 44,000 due to renovation.

Kolkata Knight Riders' co-owner Juhi Chawla is hoping for a reversal of the team's fortune with Sourav Ganguly back at the helm of affairs.

"We are proud of Dada. He has the captain's luck and he is a fighting cricketer and hope he brings that dash to the team," Juhi said.

KKR will also be sporting new purple jerseys this time.

"Going with the luck factor we have changed the black colour of our jerseys to purple and hope that gives us a purple patch," she said.

The vivacious Bollywood actor admitted to having wept as KKR lost matches in the previous season with Kiwi batsman Brendon McCullum looking hapless wearing the skipper's cap.

"I could not hold back my tears when I saw my team losing even after playing well. With a bit of luck we could have won those matches last season," she said.

Chawla said she will be present for all home games of the team at the Eden Gardens.

"The team management is working very hard both on and off the field and we are confident of doing well. We just need luck," she said.

Kolkata Knight Riders will play the inaugural game of this edition of the tournament against defending champions Deccan Chargers in Mumbai on March 12.

Cricket: IPL security tightens up

New Zealand cricketers now look more likely to play their pro-rata segments of the Indian Premier League.

Further rigorous security checks have been implemented ahead of the tournament's March 12 start, including an audit earlier this week, ticking off what sort of police force numbers are being provided as well as the level of resources dedicated to protecting players in each of the 12 host cities.
Certainly the IPL's vast salaries now have the whiff of danger money about them, thanks to threats from organisations such as the Al Qaeda-allied 313 Brigade and Shiv Sena. This is also the first IPL to be played since the Mumbai terror attacks of November 2008.
New Zealand Cricket Players Association boss Heath Mills says efforts have been reinforced on the ground to get the right methods in place to deliver the security management plan.
"If this momentum for action continues over the next week leading into the event, you would think it would be at the security level you'd expect. The feedback we've given to the players in the last three days or so is that things seem to be improving."
"It's frustrating that it's happened so late," says Mills.
"Usually we have a process in place with New Zealand Cricket to manage the security situation on tours six months out. We conduct on the ground checks with independent security experts. One advantage of India, though, is that things can be done quickly when need be."
Ultimately Shane Bond, Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Ross Taylor and Daniel Vettori now need to make the decision themselves.
Normally, ahead of an overseas tour, NZC would make the overall decision but on this occasion the players are independent contractors.
"Given the work over the last couple of weeks they'll be a lot more comfortable," says Mills. "But I couldn't say whether they will go or not. That's their decision. We just provide them with information."
While four of the New Zealand players will get an initial opportunity to watch from a distance, Bond will be the first to decide whether to head up following the conclusion of the Chappell-Hadlee one-dayers next Saturday.
IPL chairman Lalit Modi would not comment on the current security arrangement, referring the issue instead to his vice-chairman and former secretary of the Indian Cricket Board, Niranjan Shah.
"We are concerned, but I think there will be no problem with foolproof security," Shah says.

When the Indian Premier League (IPL) opens bids for two new teams for the Twenty20 tournament on Sunday, 11 bidders are expected to be in the fray though some others have chosen to keep away thanks to the stiff bidding conditions.
Consortia comprising high profile industry groups and individuals including Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, Kerala-based financial services player Muthoot Group, Hero Honda MD Pawan Munjal and members of agriculture minister Sharad Pawar's family are likely to put in their bids, according to people close to the matter.
An official involved with the IPL said most bids were expected to be made through consortiums with private equity funding.
The minimum bidding price has been fixed at $225 million. There is a clause however under which bidders have to furnish a bank guarantee for the entire amount for the 10-year contract within a week of winning the bid. Several interested parties, including the Sahara Group, ICICI Ventures, and Bollywood stars Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt, have dropped out from the process, and according to officials three industrial houses decided not to bid for the new teams.

The IPL which has gained immense popularity to emerge as the most lucrative cricket property in a short time is increasing the number of franchise teams from eight to ten with its fourth season next year.

New cities in the fray for which potential bidders will bid include Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur, Dharamsala, Vizag, Rajkot, Cuttack, Baroda, Kochi, Indore and Gwalior, with Ahmedabad, Pune and Nagpur being the frontrunners.
According to reports there was not a single bidder till Thursday, however as many as 11 bids were lodged for the three cities, seven of these being for Ahmedabad alone. Apart from stringent rules set by the governing council a big deterrent had been the base price which at $225 million was more than four times the base price of $50 million fixed during the first bidding in 2008.
The refrain among those who have chosen to keep away from the process is that the cost of team acquisition was working out to be too high as an investment of minimum Rs1,550 crore was required for buying a team which seemed prohibitive.

After nearly a month of wrangling, the concerns of the foreign players regarding security during the IPL seem to have eased with Reg Dickason, the independent security expert appointed by the player unions from Australia, England and South Africa, receiving an official update from the league's security experts.

Tim May, the Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief, called the development a welcome step in the on-going discussions, which came to a standstill after the IPL's initial refusal to cooperate.

"The one outstanding issue (as) per Reg's report is that while Nicholls-Steyn's (the agency in charge of IPL security) plan is sound - it is nothing more than a series of recommendations that are made to local security authorities," May said. "They may or may not be agreed to by the local authorities."

In fact, that was Dickason's biggest concern, and he advised the player bodies to make a note of that in their meetings with the players. He also requested the IPL for formal confirmation from the local authorities that the recommendations would be implemented. "Despite media comment from IPL officials that such government assurance has been given - Nicholls-Steyn have advised Reg that they can not get such assurances," May said.

To avoid any further clash, it was suggested by FICA that the IPL needed to declare what the local security was willing to help with. "As a compensating measure we recently requested from IPL a status report of what has or hasn't been confirmed and proposed a system of communication regarding any shortfalls of the required plans," May said. "Reg received this update and commitment regarding ongoing communication last (Sunday) evening. This is positive in terms of accurate information that we are able to put in front of the players."

Last week, Dickason dismissed the threat from 313 Brigade, the operational arm of Al Qaeda in Pakistan, after having deemed it credible in his initial assessment report. But, simultaneously, he had asked the IPL to specify to him the security implementations at the various venues.

The league officials, however, were unwilling to share any such information and Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, was vocal in his resistance over sharing security details with the player unions and even warned the foreign players of losing their lucrative IPL contracts in future. Left with no choice, Dickason prepared his original report after reviewing the security plans the IPL sent to various national cricket boards.

May had warned the tournament organisers that such stiff resistance could only worsen the issue and even lead to mass withdrawals. FICA had been entrusted by the Australian Cricketers' Association, England's Players Cricketers' Association and the South African Cricketers' Association to liaise with the IPL.

Modi, though, appears to have softened his stance since. "Already a lot of the players are on planes on their way to India and will arrive in the next few days," he wrote on his Twitter page. "Security is very important to us. We have not had to change our plans, I think it is more a case of the players now understanding them. I think they are more comfortable with the plans being implemented."

Sachin Tendulkar has been named India's most trusted person in the cricket arena, whereas IPL Chairman Lalit Modi has been ranked at the bottom.

In a list of 100 most trusted people compiled by Readers' Digest magazine, Sachin figures at the eighth position -- the highest among people related to cricket and next only to chess champion Viswanathan Anand (overall 6th).

In the same list, IPL Chairman Lalit Modi, arguably the most controversial cricket administrator, has been ranked 93rd -- the lowest rank for any cricket-related person in the list.

About Modi being at the tail-end of its Trusted list, Readers' Digest said, "Perhaps it's controversy that still stalks Lalit Modi, cricket administrator and chairman of Indian Premier League, who at 93rd position is the only sports personality to feature amongst the trust list's tail enders."

While Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, ranked 97th, is also related to the field of cricket in his capacity of Chairman of BCCI, but he's more of a politician.

Among people in the list who owe their fame to cricket, Sachin is followed by India captain MS Dhoni at 42nd position in the overall list.

Last week, master blaster Tendulkar dedicated his record unbeaten knock of 200, scored in the one-day against South Africa, to the people of India.

After the match, Sachin thanked his fans and people of India for their support and said: "I dedicate this ton to the people of India. I thank those who supported me and this is indeed a special moment."

Besides cricketers, other sports persons on the list include Viswanathan Anand (6th), shooter Abhinav Bindra (25th), Mahesh Bhupathi (49th), Leander Paes (57th) and Sania Mirza (81st).

Australia's players could be a step closer to taking part in the IPL after receiving advice that the terrorist threat from the 313 Brigade was not credible. However, Tim May, the chief executive of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations, has said there could still be "mass withdrawals" unless players receive a commitment that the IPL's security plans will be implemented at all venues.

The Australian IPL players currently on tour in New Zealand were given a briefing by a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade official at the team hotel in Christchurch on Saturday. The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) has now been told by the security adviser Reg Dickason that the 313 Brigade threat is not credible but that does not mean the issues are resolved.

"Reg is comfortable that the threat is not credible but we still haven't received a commitment that the security plans will be implemented as laid out," Marsh told the Age. "The ball is in the IPL's court at the moment.

"They can give us the commitment to implement the plans or they can't. Let's hope that they can. Our understanding is it that they've done it before, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has done it. We keep saying, our players want to go."

May agreed that it was now in the hands of the organisers and local police to commit to implementing the security plans. "If the security situation does not improve, there could be mass withdrawals," May told the BBC. "There are just 13 days before the start of the tournament and security arrangements have still not been agreed.

"We would love to tell the players it is okay for them to go. But we can't give that assurance at the moment, because no one will say definitively that the security plan will be implemented at each of the venues."

Whatmore vows KKR's turnaround in IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders will put up a better show in the upcoming Indian Premier League matches, the team's newly-appointed coach Dav Whatmore said on Saturday.

"Things are getting better and better with the boys. The only thing they need is the coordination between overseas and local players to work well," he told reporters.

Replying to a question, the Sri Lanka-born Aussie said his main strike bowler Ishant Sharma was doing well for India.

"I have no problem with him and Sharma is okay," he said while talking about Sharma's recent form.

Stressing on the need to have a couple of more back-up wicket-keepers besides Wriddiman Saha and Brendon MCcullum, he said, "Saha is doing well but getting McCullum immediately is not possible. So we need back-up wicket-keepers."

The coach said that speedster Shane Bond would be available from the third match.

"I expect other overseas players to arrive by the beginning of April," he added.

Whatmore, on his first assignment for KKR, said no team can be taken lightly in the Twenty20 format.

"Every team is a potential threat and we need to give our best in all the matches as in this format any team can be victorious," he stated.

When inquired who is the most important member of the Shah Rukh Khan owned outfit, the Australian said that every member of the team is important.

Meanwhile, the bowling coach of the team Wasim Akram is expected to arrive in the city on Monday.

The KKR on Saturday began their practice with seven domestic players and eight more is to join from Monday for full fledged camp at Eden Gardens.

English cricketer Ravi Bopara has indefinitely postponed his trip to India for IPL due to security apprehensions, saying cricket meant everything to him but 'it is not worth dying for.'

Bopara, who was snapped at USD 450,000 by the Kings XI Punjab, was supposed to leave today to join the Mohali-based outfit for this year's Indian Premier League but the Essex cricketer backed out at the last moment, saying he was not sure if the risk was worth taking.

"Cricket is my living and in many way my life. But it is not worth dying for," Bopara was quoted as saying by the Mail on Sunday.

Bopara was worried with Reg Dickason's report in which the security expert raised some serious concerns.

"This is a very tricky call. I have been in touch with the franchise and they are pretty positive that things will be OK. But Reg Dickason's report says something different.

"At the moment I'm nowhere with this decision. I've had some contact with other players. No one has said they are definitely not going, but no one has said they definitely are either. I have pushed back my flight so I can give myself a bit more time to see what happens and whether the security measures are implemented," he said.

"The franchise will want an answer in the next few days, but I will not come to a hasty decision just because I have to. I need to weigh everything up and if I could buy myself even more time I would," added Bopara.

The MCC have confirmed reports claiming they have been looking at the possibilities of joining a consortium interested in buying one of two new Indian Premier League franchises.

MCC chief executive Keith Bradshaw and club trustee Anthony Wreford spent the weekend in India holding talks with a group of investors who are interested in owning an IPL franchise.

The MCC are the guardians of the laws and spirit of cricket and the move to own an IPL franchise would be a radical change of direction for its members.

“MCC has a proud history, is respectful of the game's traditions and always mindful of its role as guardian of the laws and spirit of cricket," said Bradshaw.

"We would not pursue a path that we believed was contrary to the best interests of the sport or to the future health of Test match cricket” he added.

"Undeniably, the game is changing. MCC, as an innovative, independent cricket club, wants to be at the heart of that change.”

"The concept of MCC involvement in the IPL is something I believe is worthy of thorough investigation, and something that we'll take to our committee for their deliberation."
