recently playing around with gentoo on a SDHC card on my laptop. very fun. even got cellular usb tethering too work. although i had forgotten what a pain gentoo is to set up. but now everything is just so. ratpoison wm, uxterm, irssi, mutt, fetchmail and of course easytether. now i just have to take on printing. wish me luck!

learned a lot about dns this week. got my laptop set up as its own nameserver with unbound a dnscache. then i encrypted all my dns querys with dnscrypt-proxy from opendns. all in all a great learning experience but configuration was tough. won't go into all the details but suffice it to say that domain-name-servers must be superseded not prepended in dhclient.conf for unbound to work properly.

there is now a 16 core minimum for bigadv. read more here http://bit.ly/rDJ77V so its smp &gpu folding for my machines from here on out. also i got my usb compound cardioid microphone working on openbsd 5.0 and i owe it all to the aucat sound server. openbsd rules.

just thought i would let you know that i made another attempt at it and got remote monitoring with 7.1.38 working on OpenBSD 5.0. you have to install v7 using compat_linux but place the FAH python files in the native OpenBSD python site-packages directory. then call FAHControl with python2.7. it works like a charm. i am not too bright so it took me all night to figure out. so it is possible to fold on OpenBSD, my little laptop is only able to handle remote monitoring though.

still folding away at 1 million points per week. went ahead and bought a kvm as vnc was lagging badly. but of course it was defective. newegg just isn't what it used to be. though they still have great customer service. building a new computer for dad. its an i3-2500 on a micro-atx form factor with 8GB ram and a passively cooled nvidia gpu. should run cool and quiet for him. also got a new microphone for my sip softphone so feel free to call me anytime. those in the know should email me for the number. fold on!

after dealing with the power issues it still would not run at 99% gpu usage. so there was much bios adjusting and software installing/uninstalling and rewiring. finally on a whim i decided to remove half of the ram and it took right off and ran! after much ram testing it was determined that it was a bad dimm that was the problem. dimm CA0 to be exact. so file that away for future reference. at any rate all is well now. it is now folding away at a rate of 75,000 ppd. add in the other rig folding bigadv and it should easily top 100,000 ppd. fold on.

well ran into a few snags along the way. after much googling and forum posting i have determined that my 1500 watt psu 12 volt rail is inadequate to the task of running 4 gtx480's. so i have ordered a secondary psu and all the associated wiring. one psu will run the motherboard and cpus while the other powers the gpus. it should all arrive next week. i will make this rig fold yet!

got the new rig up and running. just waiting on the last 2 gtx480's. should be here tuesday. the new rig has dual quad core intel E5520's, 16GB crucial ram, on a tyan S7025AGM2NR motherboard. it will have 4 gtx480's folding in it. yesterday i set a new personal record of 182,227 points in one day. so its really paying off even though there are still 2 gpus to add. sorry for the extended absence, i simply have forgotten to post lately. the new rig resides in an inwin ironclad case. will be doing some fan configuration depending on how the cooling scenario looks after the last 2 gpus are in. cooling could prove to be problematic but hopefully it will all work out. the new cpus have hyperthreading so i am able to run bigadv at smp 14. i think i can get away with just allotting 2 threads to the gpus as nvidia cards don't use that much cpu time. but we will see on tuesday.

beta testing

well i applied for and was granted beta tester status for folding@home. very exited about it. testing new work units and clients. started dual booting windows 7 to enhance my testing abilities. its not as bad as i imagined but i have got to find some literature about powershell. i am used to the linux command line. bit of a paradigm shift. had a good run of folding and except for the usual occassional crappy work units things have gone well and i am now over 17 million points and ranked 345th out of 1.5 million folders. though i expect problems as a beta tester and will have to take a hit on points overall it will be a great learning experience.

debian on my phone

just installed debian on my phone. quite an undertaking for this mere mortal. learned alot about loop devices and chroots. after all that time on my phones keypad it seems a strange luxury to use a full size keyboard. it runs great and gives me not only the power of the command line but also access to all the debian packages. all in all a great learning experience. they said it couldn't be done on a samsung R880 phone but i got it built and running anyway. gives one a feeling of accomplishment. for whatever thats worth. so soon i will be blogging from my phone. on the command line yet. pretty cool.

hope everybody had a happy holidays. just went over 15 million on folding@home. now ranked 427th out of 1.5 million folders worldwide. mostly pulling 6805's and 2685's which has driven my daily average down. only pulling down about 48000 ppd. can't wait for the v7 client release Q1 2011. also phoronix test suite 3 makes it out the door soon as does openbenchmarking.org. should prove to be interesting. well its official i am fed up with the gnome stack and switched over to suckless.org products. i highly recommend them. they have a window manager (dwm), a browser (surf), an irc client (ii), a mail client (dmc), and much more. http://suckless.org go there you won't regret it. it is minimalism at its finest. if you admire simple functional software its the place to go. will be updating my website soon too. stay tuned!

just passed 13 million points on folding@home. now ranked 495th in the world. still pulling down p6811 on the gpus and p6900 on the cpus so life is good at 56000 ppd. thats 70 points per watt. pulling 801 watts today. fold on!

new work units

new work units are out this week and they are awsome. new unit for gpus is 6811 and it currently earns 14200 ppd on both my gtx480's. runs the gpus at 95% usage with a core temp of 87C. and it only uses 6% of a core so it is almost totally gpu dependent now. new unit for smp is 6900 and it currently earns 28000 ppd running on all 8 cores. so today i should have close to a 100,000 point day. i will be ranked #1 on teamubuntu tomorrow. i am already the #1 points producer for the team. fold on!

watt meter

got a new kil-a-watt meter for my folder odysseus. boy is it nice to have. turns out i am not the power hog i thought i was. granted its bad enough but no where near as bad as expected. when folding bigadv and 10632 gpu units it runs at 695 watts. running regular smp and any other gpu units i fold at 595 watts. so its 10632 that really pushes the gpus. makes sense cause 10632 runs 10 degrees C hotter on the gpus. so at best i am folding for 75 points per day per watt. not bad on the scale of things. at worst i fold for about 57 points per day per watt. thats with regular smp and any other gpu unit besides 10632. it runs cooler but doesn't kick out the points the way bigadv and 10632 can.

now folding at 1.3 million points per month. placing me at 596th in the world. just went over 11 million points total. in 33 days i will be #1 ranked folder on teamubuntu. i am already the top points producer. everything is running nice and cool in the new case. i now have my entire oreilly book collection in pdf on my android phone. very handy. waiting for the new phoronix test suite 3.0 to come out. folding and benchmarking thats what i do for fun. wow.
