How to detect lies using body language

All human beings possess the ability to lie. And many of us do — multiple studies have suggested that, on average, Americans tell one or two lies a day. Fortunately, experts say there are ways to spot signs of untruthfulness.

To identify a fib, you first have to have a baseline for how someone acts when they’re being honest, says Traci Brown, body language expert and author of How to Detect Lies, Fraud and Identity Theft: Field Guide. For example, watch how someone responds to a basic question such as, “Where are you from?” Where do their eyes go? How does their voice sound?

Once you’ve established that baseline, look for shifts in behavior in four different categories: bodily movements, facial expressions, tone of voice and content of speech, says Dr. Lillian Glass, author of The Body Language of Liars. “Those are the codes of communication,” she says.

The signs however, aren’t foolproof — if someone is uncomfortable in their seat, they may fidget; if someone is nervous, their voice may crack.

“There is debate within the healthcare community, and certainly in the area of mental health, about what are reliable body language tips that can possibly indicate that someone is lying,” says Dr. Gary Brown, a licensed family and marriage therapist based in Los Angeles. Our own perceptions can impede our ability to correctly interpret the signs, adds Dr. Jenny Taitz, a Los Angeles-based clinical psychologist. “It can be tough to accurately interpret someone through their body language since someone may feel tense or look uneasy for so many reasons,” she says. “For example, it’s easy to imagine shirking eye contact, as people often associate with lying, for any number of reasons from feeling socially anxious to bored to ashamed because you know you’re lying. We’re not always as adept at reading others as we assume.”

Still, there are signals that vetted body language experts suggest keeping an eye out for.

Body Cues

The hands: Liars tend to use gestures with their hands after they speak as opposed to during or before a conversation, says Traci Brown, who has participated in a deception training program with members of the FBI and occasionally helps work on investigations. “The mind is doing too many things including making up the story, figuring out if they’re being believed and adding to the story accordingly,” she says. “So normal gesturing that might normally happen just before a statement happens after the statement.”

A 2015 study conducted by the University of Michigan looked at 120 media clips of high-stakes court cases in order to understand how people behave when lying versus when they’re being truthful. The study found that those who lie are more likely to gesture with both of their hands than those who are telling the truth — people gestured with both of their hands in 40% of the lying clips, compared to 25% of the truthful clips.

When people are being dishonest, they also tend to face their palms away from you, says Traci Brown, who regularly gives keynote speeches at financial institutions to help them detect and prevent fraud. It’s an unconscious signal that they’re holding back information, emotions or even lying, she says. “They may put them in their pockets or even slide them under the table.”

Itching and fidgeting:
Rocking the body back and forth, cocking the head to the side or shuffling the feet can also be signs of deception, says Glass, who completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UCLA focusing on Psychology and Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication. Fluctuations in the autonomic nervous system, which regulates bodily functions, can also have an effect, she says. When people are nervous, these fluctuations in the nervous system can prompt people to feel itches or tingles in their body, which in turn can cause more fidgeting, she explains.

Research conducted by UCLA psychology professor R. Edward Geiselman drew a similar conclusion, finding that people tend to display “grooming behaviors,” such as playing with their hair, when being dishonest.

Facial Cues

The eyes: Someone who is lying might stare or look away at a crucial moment, a possible sign they’re moving their eyes around as they try to think about what to say next.

The research conducted by Geiselman at UCLA corroborated this, finding that people sometimes look away briefly when lying. The 2015 study conducted by the University of Michigan also found that those who lied were more likely to stare than those who were truthful — so much so that 70% of the clips of people lying showed them staring directly at the people they were lying to.

There is still some debate over this, however. A 2012 study published in Plos One debunked the concept that people look in a specific direction when they are dishonest. And while there is a possibility of reading too much into someone’s mannerisms, I maintains that there is some truth to be gleamed from the eyes.

The mouth:Rolling the lips back to the point where they almost disappear could be a sign someone is lying by omission, according to Traci Brown. “It’s been my experience that, when people do that, they’re holding back emotions or facts,” she says.

The research conducted at UCLA found that people who lie are more likely to purse their lips when asked sensitive questions. Pursing the lips could also mean someone doesn’t want to engage in the conversation at hand. “It’s an instinctive reflex meaning you don’t want to speak.”

Change in complexion:
Ever notice someone go white as a ghost when speaking? That could be a sign of untruthfulness, this signals blood rushing out of the face.

Sweating or dryness:
Autonomic nervous system changes can trigger liars to sweat in the T-area of the face (upper lip, forehead, chin and around the mouth) or have dryness in the mouth and eyes — the person might excessively blink or squint, lick or bite their lips or swallow hard.

Tone of Voice
A high-pitched voice: When people are nervous, the muscles in the vocal cords might tighten up (an instinctive response to stress), leading the voice to sound very high-pitched. You might also notice a creak in someone’s voice. Clearing the throat, a means of coping with the discomfort of the tightened muscles, can also at times signal dishonesty.

A sudden change of volume:
People who fib also tend to raise their voices. “Sometimes you’ll get louder because you’ll get defensive.”

Content of Speech
Phrases such as ‘I want to be honest with you,’ ‘honestly’ or ‘let me tell you the truth’: These can be signs someone may be trying a little too hard to convince you of their honesty.

Using words such as , uh,’ ‘like’ and ‘um':
The research conducted at the University of Michigan found “speaking with more vocal fill” to be a common indicator of deception. People tend to use these words more when they’re trying to buy time to figure out what they’re going to say next.

Slip-up:

For instance, as a writer let us write to help the masses not just our own selfish gain.. If we are into technology stuff.. Let's make equipment that will make the world easy for people to live.. Nobody's useless.

Life doesn't depend on what you want or what is happening, but it depends on what has been predestined. This life is easy and not seems or take as something complicated. The attitude you show to life is what you gets in return.

I don't understand why people take life as something complicated, we are this world yo do something, everybody has a special reason for being here and each person suppose to use his importance to make the world a better place not to make our individual life better only.. The Gift- A Short Story

It was drizzling outside. I drove the car through the occasional mist, climbing the winding roads up the high ranges. She didn’t say anything. We knew it was our last journey together. The last time I would be taking her to her workplace.

I remembered all the moments we had together from the moment I first met her. How happy we both were together! The great Indian wedding cliché just spoiled our relationship. She belonged to a different religion and our parents denied our insatiable love and desire to be together. My rage and grief reflected on the speedometer of the car.

“Please, go slow”, she said at last.

When I had a sideways glance, I saw her rummaging in her bag.

“Can you please pull over?”, she asked.

She looked sick. I stopped the car under a Gulmohar tree which stood magnanimously by the road side, shedding flowers all over the place, bathing the ground under it in blood red. I looked at her.

“Why did you want me to stop?”

She took out a bottle of imported perfume from her bag. Her favorite brand.

“You may take this. Please don’t forget me, I beg.”

I could see her eyes welling up. I didn’t know what to say. I felt my heart drowning in icy water.

My words were broken. I held her hand tight, like I never ever wanted to let her go. And I kissed the back of her palm. My tears kissed her even before my lips could do. The drizzle and the fog that adhered on the windshields curtained us from the rest of the world.

A few hours later I was back at the same place, alone, after dropping her off at her workplace and leaving her forever. I had the perfume bottle clenched in my hand and her fragrance all around me. The best gift she ever gave me.

Commitment

Commitment means putting each other and the relationship first. There are more twins now than ever before.

The "weapons-grade" Dragon's Breath chili pepper is so hot it's downright deadly. If you ate one, it could potentially cause a type of anaphylactic shock, burning the airways and closing them up.

"I've tried it on the tip of my tongue and it just burned and burned," said Mike Smith, the hobby grower who invented the Dragon's Breath along with scientists from Nottingham University. So why make such an impractical pepper? As it turns out, the chili was initially developed to be used in medical treatment as an anesthetic that can numb the skin.

Located at Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, the lab room measures a background noise of -20.35 dBA, which is 20 decibels below the threshold of human hearing and breaks previous records for spaces that were deemed the planet's quietest places, according to CNN.

"As soon as one enters the room, one immediately feels a strange and unique sensation which is hard to describe," Hundraj Gopal, a speech and hearing scientist and principal designer of the anechoic chamber at Microsoft, told CNN. "Most people find the absence of sound deafening, feel a sense of fullness in the ears, or some ringing. Very faint sounds become clearly audible because the ambient noise is exceptionally low. When you turn your head, you can hear that motion. You can hear yourself breathing and it sounds somewhat loud."

Wanna talk about my Today... It wasn't a good day for me cos Yunno u can't always be in a good mood.. As for me today is a bad for me because I have issue with my mom and she went and report me to my friends as if those friends were better than me. . Actually we have one older one's among us.. He's a little bit older than us but we give him his respect and because of that he started talking as if he is a saint... What actually happened was that I was fetching water at home then the pail fell from my hand and the water poured away from to her room.. I didn't let her know and I started cleaning the mess.. Hmm.. When she saw it she just started hurling abusive words on me and she won't let me say anything she believes it is intentional.. I tried talking but she won't allow.. I didnt show my anger I cleaned d floor and had my bath and left the house without eating her food.. Please have I done bad??

The most annoying part now is Nobody cares about how I feel and what made d water to pour away they just keep on saying m a bad child just because she told them I did pour the water away because I was angry... So back to what happened today.. The uncle started counseling me too without asking me what actually happened.. Please is it because of our culture here in Yoruba land or its general that a child won't be allowed to try and have a say on an issue and when u try to do they will conclude that u are rude and that is the worst part because even all the community elders wont ever side you... To me this is so wrong.. Though we are not as wise as our parent but at least we have if its just little to say to show our intention and how we feel.. We shouldn't be asked to keep mute on matters that concern us.. Nobody is always right... Our parent are wrong somehow.. And we can prove that politely.. Even a wayward child should be given chance to explain his action not just be concluded he's a rude and disobedient child and he is left alone with reasons in his heart... But nobody to hear him out.. The society wipes him off...

Any matter we are to handle.. We shouldn't judge cos of what the accused said.. The accused might be right but The person being accused might have not as thought about that way or doesn't have the intention to harm the other person... Please let us try and hear other peoples opinion before jumping to sudden conclusion.. And we urge our parent to please always try and hear us out.. We have mind to think and heart to judge.. They should please give us chance to be free to defend ourselves against them and anywhere

Why must there be poor people in the world.. Many people has more than enough to cater for themselves and their upcoming generation but why are some left outside there to labour so hard and still couldn't provide for themselves not to talk of their Child(ren)... They find it hard to eat even though they work so hard far more than the people that are extremely rich and the worst of it these people won't stop exploiting the poor making them to work and work but they'll pay them little and thus the rich are becoming richer and the poor poorer.. This thread has been from the past and it's still on in our present. Is this how it will move to our future generation... Imagine a child sent to school without a school uniform, bag and books.. To make d matter worse no breakfast and Lunch is not even sure...

Research shows that kids from poor background are d one's with the sharpest brain but conditions around them changes that great I. Q to "how to survive" then the hunt into the labour market will start at their tender age, when they suppose to have all their amenities by their parent but even the parent couldn't feed themselves not to talk of buying clothes and sort of... Some who couldn't work will start begging for food and money in other to survive the day... We all know nobody's to be trusted these days but to me if u have more than enough what will make u to beg even if u had another motive in mind you can't ever do that because it will irritate you ego.. Yea... Cos ya "rich" and you only think on how to get ur own more money not minding their some people who cries everytime just to have little that u have.

. Now the question is who's to be blamed for the gap between the rich and the poor.. Firstly when I say rich people I don't mean people like Dangote or Otedola only... I mean all of us who still has little to take care of ourselves.. At least it might be little but its still manageable.. Now when beggers went to meet some people they will chase them off or curse them... Some will say they should go and work so that they will stop begging.. I can't help but feel this sadness deep down whenever I witnessed this and nothing hurt more than seeing those kids begging, some will even be crying.. Its not really their fault.. Its what life has given them.. They can work but in this world who will give them the recognition they want or who will give them a very lucrative job to do

... Let's just imagine we are in their shoes, imagine u are born into this kind of family, how will u feel when u have nothing.. No clothing, no shelter no happiness.. How will u feel In this kind of situation.. We can't stop seeing them nor they can't be far from US... They are around and we know them but why can't we just do little help that's in our power.. Especially when u want to board a commercial vehicle we see them a lot... We have more than enough to give.. Even though we might not have extra change that's a different case but we having just 100 bucks and we our boarding The vehicle with just #50 out of #100 we are having why can't we dash out if its just #20... It can't ever be enough but at least it will give them the hope of living for that minute... Chastising them away will only show that life is not for them and believe the world is not for them... Even though we have some little cash we all know how we feel when we need certain cash or something and we couldn't get it.. Now just imagine someone came to give money when u needed it the most... How will you feel... You will feel alive and more enthusiasm.. That's it we should these people anytime anywhere and the saying that "Everybody's looking for money " should be stopped.. Though its true but we still have what they don't have.. We have shelter, clothing, feeding.. So why blame circumstances that's just happening to us at that moment... Some don't have what u have and they are not sure they are going to have it till they die... I know we will all blame government for this but the truth is Its not government fault alone its anybody's that have what it takes to help the poor but didn't do it because that person is not different from the government that is being accused..

Let all us endeavor to put an end to this gap between the rich and the poor.. Let's give them the hope they need.. We all own the earth together... If we employ them let's pay them on time and the cash they deserve and then if we see them and we have anything that can help them.. It maybe food, clothing or anything to put

Smile on their face... Let's give them the opportunity to feel among... The world is better when this gap is closed... When there's no poor nor rich... We give out to those that are really In need.. I think we should help people we that we can't get something from them in return rather than helping people who we think in one way or the other be helpful to us..

When we look into the world in depth, we see different people and the class they belong... Which are the bourgeoisie (the wealthy), the proletariat(middle class) and the have not(the poor):who don't have anything at all, but to walk about the street before they could get themselves something to put in their mouth.

As we all see,this is disheartening. But basically,I feel the poor should be talked about too because they are intensely living a miserable life. The have not life should be considered and not be allowed to be in their place. Though we might not have them around us,where we live but outside there, they are innumerable.

. This poor people, especially their children suffer a lot...imagine a growing up child, going for days with nothing in the stomach. And most of this children play just to keep the hunger and all sort and this kids have got the best smile most times...

But to be frank,sometimes when we look at this peoples life,it's not like they haven't attempted on getting cash for themselves but things just doesn't work out for them and all sort. Some even spend all day toiling (all shouldn't be counted though) but still don't get it. Then with time they begin to lose all the faith and hope they've got,thinking they are fated to be poor all their life...

So this people, can't cater for themselves and all they need is what to eat to make a living and care at

times because they really endure paucity of meal and lack of proper care. So if anyone around you who is poor comes for assistance, don't just look at them in disgust and rebuke them for their look but endeavour to render them what you've got.

Though it's not anyone's responsibility to give out to unknown but there are just something's that should be done by one probably. You giving them a little out of what you've got, won't desist you from being rich or having your money.

Anyways, I'm not saying we should give to them all the time but anytime one is opportune to give them,we should do our best to do our part spontaneously...

Let everyone be aware of the fact that the little you've to offer,means a lot to them...

Sometimes you wish like going to the past to solve an issue but the past is already gone we just have to let it go and let it motivate us to have a better present and future... Sometimes we are happy and sometimes we are sad, during the sad periods we shouldn't try and give up on our plans and believe the best is yet to come another time... Sometimes we feel among friends and other time we feel like staying alone.. Its normal for us to feel like this but because we are feeling like staying shouldn't make us to do things that will make us to fight our friends or what will make them to be angry with you because at that time you'll feel like you don't need them but the truth is, that moment will pass and then when you feel like being among friends again if u had behave rashly to them.. You might find it difficult to reconcile with them and with that you might be alone when u don't even want to...

Sometimes some people will hurt you and still put the blame on you but that shouldn't change who we are... When you are hurt, at that moment don't tr and act or say anything because what you'll say then might be what u don't plan to say and might ended up being a chaos.. The best moment to address when you are being is when you are happy the most because then that's when you can do say what you feel about the situation and solve it amicably.. If are to revenge then.. That's vengeance will go on and might never end so easily....

Life is going to knock you down sometimes, and that's ok. But what's not ok is when you let life keeping you down... Sometimes the best of us is shown when things are tough... So when conditions are not in our Favour.. We shouldn't give up but believe the best is yet to come...
