Cristiano Ronaldo: Has a thigh problem

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will not play any part in Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Wednesday.
The former Manchester United forward picked up a strain in his left thigh during Madrid's 5-0 win at Almeria on Saturday, forcing him to be substituted in the 54th minute.
The Madrid coach reiterated that the injury was nothing to be worried about and was hopeful he would only miss the match with Roberto Mancini's side and could be back in time to face Real Valladolid at the weekend.
"Cristiano can't play tomorrow, he's had a very small problem but tomorrow we're going to rest him and we're going to see if he can be available for Saturday," Ancelotti told a press conference.
"He has a small muscle strain but he is very confident he can play on Saturday, but if there's any risk of him getting injured, he won't play."
Ronaldo has scored 14 goals in his last seven matches for club and country and Madrid fans inside the Bernabeu will pay tribute to the forward by wearing 45,000 masks of his face to show their support for his bid to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or.
Ronaldo was replaced by 20-year-old Jese Rodriguez against Almeria and Ancelotti said either the youngster or Angel di Maria would start on the left of attack in the Portuguese's place.
The coach also confirmed he would not change Gareth Bale's position on the right of Madrid's attack in Ronaldo's absence.
"Bale plays on the right to take advantage of his shooting ability, I prefer my players to play on a different side to their stronger foot," he said.
Ronaldo, Sami Khedira, Raphael Varane and Fabio Coentrao have all been ruled out through injury, while Luka Modric is suspended after picking three yellow cards in the first four Champions League games.
Varane has struggled to remain match fit after undergoing knee surgery last May, starting a total of just six games this season, and Ancelotti revealed he would be rested for up to a fortnight to prevent the knee from becoming inflamed.
Another player who could miss out is Xabi Alonso, who returned to action less than a month ago following a groin operation and then a fractured metatarsal.
"We have to be careful with Alonso because he's just come back from an important injury, playing two games in four days could be a problem, so there's a chance he will rest and Casemiro will play instead," explained Ancelotti.
Madrid romped to a 6-1 win over Galatasaray when the two teams met in September but Ancelotti believes the Turkish champions are a stronger side under Mancini, who succeeded Fatih Terim as coach a week after that match.
Madrid have taken 10 points from their four Champions League matches and just need a draw to mathematically ensure they qualify as group winners, but just a point separates second place Galatasaray from bottom side Juventus.
"It will be a different game to the one in Istanbul, Galatasaray have changed a lot since Mancini arrived," said Ancelotti.
"Now they have more balance and have quality in attack, with players like Didier Drogba. We expect a very difficult game because they are playing for qualification."

Messi receives Golden Boot as Europe's top scorer Read more: Messi receives Golden B

2013-12-03T15:24:00.002-08:00

BARCELONA, Spain: Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was presented with a record third Golden Boot on Wednesday for scoring the most goals in Europe’s domestic leagues last season.

The 26-year-old Messi helped Barcelona win the 2012-13 Spanish league by scoring 46 goals despite missing several games with a right hamstring pull near the end of the season.

Messi also won the award for 34 goals in 2009-10, and a Spanish record 50 in 2011-12.

The first player to receive the award three times, Messi dedicated his latest trophy to his family and his teammates, calling it a team award.

“This is a beautiful award that goes to the entire squad for what it has done,” Messi said. “It is a group award more than an individual one because those are a lot of goals. I wouldn’t have won it without them, this one or the previous ones.”

Messi is recovering from a left hamstring tear that will probably keep him sidelined for the rest of 2013. It was his third leg injury of the season. Before his latest injury, he had eight goals in 11 league appearances.

After receiving the trophy from former Barcelona star Hristo Stoichkov, Messi said his leg was feeling better while remaining cautious about rushing back.

Several teammates, including Cesc Fabregas, Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol, along with club president Sandro Rosell were in attendance.

Messi has won the world player of the year award an unprecedented four years in a row. He is again nominated this year, but he has tough competition from Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery.

Messi has played a major part in Barcelona’s impressive run of titles over the past decade. He has won three Champions Leagues, six Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey, two Club World Cups, six Spanish Super Cups and two European Super Cups.

Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer, Messi’s 65 goals in the Champions League is second to former Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez’s 71. AP

Circulez, y-a rien à voir.

Referees' Union: Chelsea midfielder Mikel's ban is not long enough

Referees' Union: Chelsea midfielder Mikel's ban is not long enough

Getty Images

Prospect, the referees' trade union, has slammed the FA for their lenience after they banned Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel for three games.

The organisation has expressed its disappointment in the suspension issued by the FA after the Nigerian confronted Mark Clattenburg following the Blues' controversial Premier League clash with Manchester United in October. Mikel was also fined £60,000 by the FA, but Prospect believe the Chelsea midfielder’s ban is not strong enough.

Don't Miss

"It is vital that officials were given real respect and this decision regrettably gave entirely the wrong message. A player in parks football found guilty of behaviour like Mikel's would have faced a long-term ban," Prospect said in a statement.

National secretary Alan Leighton backed Prospect’s views, by saying that the ban ridicules the FA's own respect campaign.

"For entering the referee's dressing room and threatening and intimidating the referee to the extent that he feared for his safety the penalty was no longer than had the player been sent off for serious foul play," Leighton told reporters.

"This did absolutely nothing to further the Respect campaign."

Valencia defeat was harsh on Lille, says Garcia

Rudi Garcia believes that Lille did not deserve to lose Wednesday's Champions League Group F encounter against Valencia as he feels the Ligue 1 side did enough to earn at least a draw.A single Jonas strike in the opening 45 minutes proved to be too much for the youthful Ligue 1 side, but Garcia was nonetheless satisfied with his side's performance.

"We were a bit tentative in the first half; the second was better. The tempo was too slow before the break, but Valencia didn't really conjure up any meaningful shots - that is why a defeat is so harsh. Unfortunately, their goalkeeper made two or three top-class stops," Garcia said at a press conference.

"The players always give their all. I knew we could make the team more technical with our substitutions, and what we did in the second half we should have done in the first.

"Now we must focus on the league and cups. We would have liked to have given our fans the points; they deserved it."

Lille resume Ligue 1 action on Saturday when they travel to Sochaux.

Wenger Talks About Walcott, Mannone And About Qualification

Wenger Talks About Walcott, Mannone And About Qualification

In his interview to Arsenal’s official website, Arsene Wenger discussed about Theo Walcott, Goal Keeper selections and about qualifying for the knockout stage in the UCL.

Wenger: We are improving as a team

About Walcott,

“He did well. He had a positive attitude and was fresh as well. He was the only one you always felt could make a difference and but he lacked confidence when failed to convert a late chance in the final minute.

About Goal Keeper Selection,

“Mannone had a good game, he had a good game against United for me as well. It is good, very interesting. His confidence gets better in every game.”

On Team Performance,

“For us it was important first of all not to lose and if possible to win. We managed the first part, not the second one. I felt that overall we played reasonably well, but dropped physically in the second half. We scored two goals. We had more chances and played with three offensive midfielders as well. At some stage, we have to put one or two defenders in the team as well.”

About Qualifying,

“It’s open group. We are of course for qualifying if we win our games. If we win the next game, we have a 50 per cent chance of going through because Schalke play Olympiacos here. They are in a position where they have absolutely to win that game as well. It will of course depend on our result first against Montpellier and then we will see what happens here. It could go to last game, but we could do it in the next game. Anyway, we must win against Montpellier.”

FC Schalke 2-2 Arsenal - Match Report

By Richard Clarke in Gelsenkirchen

Arsenal snatched a valuable point at Schalke on Tuesday night as they inched towards qualification from Champions League Group B.

Arsène Wenger’s side had their eye on a morale-boosting victory when Theo Walcott and Oliver Giroud rattled in goals midway through the first half.

However, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar produced a precise finish to reduce the arrears on the stroke of half-time and Jefferson Farfan equalised just past the hour mark as the home side built up a head of steam.

Arsenal had to withstand serious Schalke pressure throughout but Walcott nearly grabbed all three points with the final kick of the game.

So while this could have been more, it might have been less - it was that sort of game.

Despite Olympiacos winning, Wenger’s men are still second - one point shy of Schalke and one clear of the Greek side.

Those teams play each next while Arsenal entertain bottom-side Montpellier.

This group could well go down to the wire but Wenger’s side have more than a fighting chance after grinding out a decent draw at the Veltins-Arena.

The spectre of Saturday's disappointing defeat at Manchester United was still apparent in the pre-match build-up. The Arsenal manager had been analytical, honest and business-like his approach. He knew the only true ghostbuster would be the next victory.

Aaron Ramsey had limped off at Old Trafford with a groin injury that kept him in England for this trip. Walcott shook off his own bout of sickness to replace him on the right.

Andre Santos dropped down to the bench, Thomas Vermaelen moved to left back and Laurent Koscielny slotted in at centre back.

The Veltins-Arena was a superb sight before kick-off - bright, noisy, and boisterous.

In many ways the home side had out-Arsenaled the Gunners at Emirates Stadium. They had been fluent, fast and inventive; presumably had since added confidence given the manner of their 2-0 victory a fortnight ago.

Certainly they displayed all these qualities in a lively opening quarter of an hour.

Christian Fuchs saw an inquisitive shot blocked in the fourth minute then, after Lukas Podolski was robbed in midfield, the same player spread the ball wide to Ibrahim Afellay, who drilled a low shot towards the near post. Vito Mannone flung out his right hand to palm the ball aside.

In the 12th minute Benedikt Howedes headed narrowly over from Farfan’s corner.

The home side had created three good chances while Arsenal had struggled to get going offensively.

In the end, the impetus was handed to Wenger’s side but, oh how they snatched the opportunity with both hands.

On 18 minutes, Roman Neustadter’s miscued header towards keeper Lars Unnerstall fell woefully short. Giroud seized the ball and when he was robbed just inside the area Walcott nipped in to convert from close range.

It was Walcott’s 50th goal in his 233rd appearance for the Club.

More importantly, it was everything Arsenal needed.

Just before the half-hour the lead would be doubled. Walcott began the move on the right and Giroud’s tenacity kept it going when he slid the ball to Podolski on the left. The German whipped in a cross to the near post where the Frenchman flung himself full-length to crash home a close-range header.

Giroud maybe an educated, erudite Frenchman but this goal was that of a muck-and-nettles English centre forward from the 1970s.

Schalke were rocked. Like Arsenal, their passing game was founded on confidence and conceding goals in that fashion upset the equilibrium.

Farfan weaved through and blasted wide when he should have hit the target but, at the other end, Giroud met Santi Cazorla’s free-kick with a powerful flick. However he directed it straight at the keeper.

It seemed that Arsenal had done their job for the half. They had soaked up pressure and snatched a brace of crucial goals. However, there would be a sting.

Arsenal lost possession in midfield and Lewis Holtby’s header gave Huntelaar the sniff of a chance.
It was all he needed.

With the visiting defenders closing-in, the Dutchman allowed the ball to roll across his body to tee-up the cleanest of left-footed strikes into the far corner.

It was cruel on Arsenal because they had looked increasingly comfortable.

And because there was barely time to kick-off before the half-time whistle went.

Five minutes after the restart, Huntelaar nearly brought about parity. With the Arsenal defence appealing for offside, he received the ball 12 yards out with time to choose his spot. Most of the time, this situation has only one conclusion.

However this time, Mannone stood up to make an excellent stop with his legs.

Schalke were now turning the screw and forcing Arsenal back. They claimed a penalty just before the hour for a handball by Per Mertesacker, then Marco Hoger slammed an angled shot against the outside of the post and Holtby had a dip from distance.

Eventually, in the 68th minute, the equaliser arrived.

A long, raking cross from Afellay was missed by Holtby but found Farfan at the far post. His low drive beat Mannone and, although Vermaelen turned the ball home, it was always going in.

As often happens, Schalke’s dominance subsided after they had hauled back the sizable deficit. Arsenal started to make inroads and, although offside, Walcott slid a shot against the inside of the far post.

The German side kept coming forward but they seemed somewhat spent due to their previous exertions. They could not raise themselves again.

Arsenal stuck manfully to their task and may have stolen all three points with the final kick of the game when substitute Francis Coquelin sent Walcott through.

He managed to pull the ball from under his feet but his shot bounced back off the keeper.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester United, 2013 UEFA Champions League Draw: The undoubted tie of the round

2013-12-03T15:08:00.003-08:00

jeudi 20 décembre 2012

Real Madrid vs. Manchester United, 2013 UEFA Champions League Draw: The undoubted tie of the round

Manchester United will play Real Madrid for the first time since that game in 2003, when a Ronaldo hat-trick earned a standing ovation from the home crowd at Old Trafford as it sent the hosts out despite a 4-3 victory.
That game is dripping with historical significance because it provoked Alex Ferguson to finally destroy that great Manchester United side, but this one will be important for another matter: Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese winger has not played against United since making his world-record transfer to the Spanish giants, and you can bet that no matter what else happens, it will all be about him. Yet aside from that, this is a well-balanced tie. Real have the better team on paper, but in big, two-legged encounters like these, have a recent history of playing well below themselves while United, by contrast, tend to bring their A-game. This also gives us a managerial match-up of Sir Alex Ferguson vs. Jose Mourinho - the last time, Ferguson prevailed by defeating Mourinho's Internazionale on the way to the final. This time, things could be different.

Key player

Cristiano Ronaldo. Obviously. The winger has constantly spoke highly of both the club and Ferguson since he left, while songs are still sung about him at pretty much every United away game. It'll be an emotional encounter for everyone, but also a pretty terrifying one if you're in a red shirt. Ronaldo is the match-winner to end all match-winners - with him in the game, United will know they are never entirely safe.

Matchups to watch

Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Patrice Evra - If Mourinho has any sense - and he does, he's Jose Mourinho, for christ's sake - then he'll deploy Ronaldo to threaten United's vulnerable left flank. Patrice Evra's form has declined alarmingly in recent seasons, particularly the defensive side of his game, so in theory Ronaldo will be able to have his wicked way with him throughout the whole 180 minutes plus. Ferguson's not that daft though, so you'd imagine he'll have a plan to aid the Frenchman. What it could be will be open to question.
The entire Real Madrid team vs. David de Gea - The young Spanish goalkeeper has been linked with a move to Real Madrid already, and with the form United's defence are in, he'll have to be at his best to keep the scores low. Fortunately, the keeper is both well-accustomed and well-equipped to desperate strings of shot-stopping in lieu of a decent defence, and it's pretty much nailed on that he'll have to do the same here.
Shinji Kagawa\Wayne Rooney vs. Sami Khedira\Pepe - For all United's 'midfield problems', at the sharp end of the middle of the pitch, they're remarkably strong. They can attack the hole with Wayne Rooney in his position there, and Shinji Kagawa is almost certain to feature at some point too. Both are energetic, hard-working players who can't be left alone, so it's unlikely Madrid will be able to just put Xabi Alonso there. They'll need better cover, and it'll come from Pepe and Khedira, whether they're stepping up from defence or playing there. Whether they have the discipline to match Rooney's physicality and deal with Kagawa's trickery will be intriguing.

Prediction

A penalty shootout, because it's almost impossible to call. Real Madrid are the better team, but they have a history of not living up to that in this competition, while United tend to play above themselves in these sorts of games. Having said that, it's often down to Ferguson picking a better team than his counterpart, but he's made some odd choices lately and he's up against Jose Mourinho, who is no idiot.
Real Madrid are in poor form in La Liga, while United are playing well at the moment and historically tend to be playing at their peak around the time this tie will take place. On the other hand, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Luka Modric and Mesut Ozil will be lining up against Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley and Anderson. There's an equal argument to be made for both sides.

Fabregas And His Mystery Brunette’s Identity Revealed

It is known that Barcelona and Spanish star Cesc Fabregas has been dating Daniella Semaan. The couple have been spending time since last summer and have been spotted displaying public love and affection on various holiday destinations.

Daniella Semaan and Cesc Fabregas

Ever since his move from Arsenal, the midfielder has been spotted with Daniella and the pair is set to be in good terms admist all the media highlights. But who is Daniella Semaan ? The Sun has reported that, a millionaire businessman on Saturday night claimed that Daniella was his wife and found her cheating with Spanish International Cesc Fabregas when he and his wife were trying for a third child. The pair from Lebanon are married and have two children, Elie Taktouk a property tycoon and Daniella are now divorced and Elie has claimed that he was shocked to see his wife with the soccer star in newspaers and that is how he found out their relationship.

He said: “I was completely numb and in shock for months. I was in denial but I never wanted her back. The minute I saw those pictures I felt disgusted by her behaviour and just cut off all emotions. We were trying for a baby when this happened. I am not surprised by him — I wouldn’t expect less from him. I am not interested in him.
“He is 25 and a fool. She went after him and she would leave him as soon as his money and fame run out. He is no David Beckham.”

Elie has no other choice but forced to see his ex wife and the Spanish star canoodling and what is more worse for the Businessman is to see the midfielder becoming stepfather to his son aged eight and 11-year-old daughter.
For Fabregas, it is his first girl friend after breaking up with childhood sweetheart Carla Garcia. The pair broke up when Fabregas left for Arsenal to join his dream club Barcelona and ever since it was Daniella who is spotted with him.
In the complete story that Elie had told The Sun, he further added:
“Fabregas was messing around with a mother of an eight-year-old. The most I would do is kiss my wife on the cheek in front of my kids.” Fabregas and Daniella have since been snapped kissing on holiday in Italy.”
The midfielder’s move from North London to Camp Nou has indeed broken few hearts more than the Arsenal faithful.

Villas-Boas eager to face Chelsea in the Europa League

Villas-Boas eager to face Chelsea in the Europa League

The Blues, who beat Tottenham 4-2 earlier this year, were knocked out of the group stages of the Champions League, and Villas-Boas does not believe their failure should be rewarded.

"When I was in Europa League with Porto, people asked me [this] a lot," the Portuguese told reporters.

"I think it's extremely unfair because the clubs that should come down are the clubs that qualify for the last 16 and then are knocked out in the last 16. That's much fairer.

"You can't give a bonus to teams who have failed, and in the situation as it stands, teams fail in the Champions League and are promoted to the Europa League which is a massive bonus."

Tottenham and Chelsea cannot meet in the last 32, but could been drawn together in the latter stages of the tournament, a prospect Villas-Boas would relish.

He continued: "Sometimes it's destiny. Hopefully if we go through we can meet each other, they have a team that can win the trophy, they will be in the late stages.

"If we cross it will be two magnificent games for sure."

Spurs qualified for the knock-out rounds by beating Panathinaikos 3-1 at White Hart Lane, and Emmanuel Adebayor was effusive in his praise of strike partner Jermain Defoe after the game.

"I think Jermain is a good player, a great striker," the Togo international told ITV Sport.

"For me, playing alongside him, I'm just learning every day and [we're] trying to know each other better and that's what we're doing.

"Today we had a chance to play together and we have done the job, everyone is happy, and now we look forward."
