An issue I notice a majority of women have trouble with is deciding how much or what style of makeup is appropriate for the workplace. What is too much versus how much is enough? What colors or look should I go for? How can I come across as a professional while still looking feminine? All of these are questions I hear from young, female professionals either in the pursuit of a career or just beginning in one. The answer to these questions is actually quite simple.

THE ANSWER: SIMPLE!

Simple makeup is honestly the best answer to thee simple questions. You want the makeup to bring out the natural beauty that every woman has, but not be overly flashy or draw too much attention.

• Pick a foundation that matches your skin tone so you don't come across as a two-tone woman - neck one color, face another. Also, trying using a matte power so that you don't become oily or shiny throughout the day. Sometimes work can be stressful and when you start to sweat you don't want to lose your look. Apply the powder on top of your foundation or instead of it.

• Your eyes are important - enhance them, but don't go overboard. Again, try to stick to more neutral, skin-tone colors. This would include light bronzes, nudes, browns, lighter pinks, etc. Now, I know you want to bring out the color in your eyes with those bright colors, but you can get the same effect using pastels of those same colors.

• Again on the eyes, mascara is a must and some eyeliner never hurt. Black eyeliner is typically seen as a "no no," but I don't see the harm in it as long as it does not appear harsh against your skin tone or you do not apply to much. (Sorry my lovely fair and pale ladies, but you should avoid black eyeliner in the work place!) Brown eyeliner is always safe, but again, never too much! And, again, mascara is a wonderful product because it brings out your eyes without adding too much making you look professional, yet feminine. Don't forget to line your brows if you have thin ones like me. Pick a brow-liner that is the same color as your hair and try to stay within the bounds of your natural ones.

• Blush is always a good thing, but like I've been saying, don't put too much (and avoid glitters)! Some lighter nude/pinks are perfect on the apples of your cheeks and across your cheekbones. This will create a highlighted effect that will look beautiful under those harsh office lights. A quick swoosh of highlighter in the tops of your cheekbones never hurt either!

• Color on a woman's lips is one of those subtle things that makes a big difference. Depending on skin tones, a light pink, nude rose, or coral brown would be a perfect accent to your wardrobe. Look for lipsticks with words such as 'creamy,' 'nude,' 'sheer,' 'cool,' and 'warm' as they tend to be softer and more professional. Top of your lip color with some clear gloss for a little shine and you're good to go!

THINGS TO AVOID

For Eyes That Shine All Day !

Now that you know what to look for in your workplace makeup kit, these are things you should avoid. These types of products or colors tend to make you look showy or unprofessional and may even prevent you from being taken seriously amongst your colleagues.

• Try to stay away from those fake looking bronzers in the workplace or tones that are too dark or too light for you. Bronzers make you look like you are attending a fashion show and the wrong color can make you appear washed out or too unnaturally tan.

• When it comes to eye shadow, avoid bright rainbow colors and shimmers because they make you look overly glitzy. You're going for professional, not high fashion. Blues and greens always tend to stick out regardless of what skin tone they are applied too, so you may have to pass up on those colors.

• The rule with eyeliner and mascara is just not too much, but don't use fake lashes in the work place. Outside of work, those puppies are beautiful, but in the office they just seem like too much.

• Steer clear of bright blushes, especially those with a ton of shimmer or glitter involved. Bright or deep pinks and reds can make you look strange in a whole new way. Anything from sun burnt to clown-like, but none of them are good. With the shimmer and glitter, it just appears very reflective under office lights and may make you appear greasy.

• Lips - stay away from using bright colors or those colors that aren't a semi-natural shade (this would include purples, blacks, oranges, etc.). You don't want people staring at just your mouth as you talk, especially if you are giving a presentation - it can be distracting!

HOW I DO IT

These are the steps I take when I am applying makeup for an interview or a meeting. I have always found it helpful to know how someone else does something and I hope this helps you.

1. Apply skin-tone concealer under the eyes, on the eyelids, and on blemishes. I find dabbing lightly with your fingertips to be the best applicator.

2. Apply a thing layer liquid foundation over entire face and slightly down around the jaw-line. This way you don't get that line you see on women sometimes at the bottom of their face.

3. Use powder on entire face other than eyelids to get the foundation to "stick."

4. Line brows with liner. I fill in natural brows and then extend them slightly on the ends to create that very structured look. I also use a brow gel to keep all the hairs in place throughout the day.

5. Apply eyeshadow. This can be done in any different ways. I apply a nude color to the lid, a highlighter color to the place under my brow, and a slightly darker color to the crease. You can buy palettes of eyeshadow with this exactly layout to make it easier.

6. Line the top of my eye and the bottom-outer third. This doesn't appear as too much, but does make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

7. Apply mascara to top lashes and the bottom-outer third. You want to place the mascara where the eyeliner is because it enhances the effect of the eyeliner.

8. Apply blush to cheekbones. Apply one shade darker blush right under cheekbones. Dust highlighter on the top of your cheekbones. If you have even heard of contouring or shading your makeup - this is it in a simplified form.

9. Apply lipstick and then clear gloss. Sometimes I line my lips with a shade that is slightly darker than the lipstick I choose, but sometimes that can look like "too much."

10. Walk out the door and into the office - just don't forget to smile!

When we look at a person the eyes are the first thing we usually see. For women through the art of makeup, it is quite easy to accentuate the eyes and create a lovely look if you know how. As the old saying goes - eyes are the windows to the soul. Our eyes should look bright and clear but all too often they can reflect how tired and stressed we are not to mention our age. Below are some easy tips to hide tired eyes and with the right makeup applications, make them look fantastic.

Hiding Dark Circles Under The Eyes

Often dark under eye circles are caused by stress, poor diet, allergies or lack of sleep. Fortunately with the right cosmetics and the right tools it is fairly east to hide these dark circles.

Whenever working with the skin around the eyes take extra care as it is very delicate. First moisturise underneath the eye area to avoid the skin appearing dehydrated. If the skin is too dry it will enhance fine lines. Even oily skin needs to be moisturised first.

Choose a good quality concealer. A concealer is a must have item for the makeup kit. It comes in very handy to cover blemishes and dark circles but the trick is to use it sparingly. To hide dark circles apply it only to the darkest parts under your eyes (using it all over will draw attention to the area). After lightly blending it apply the tiniest amount of powder to set the concealer.

It's best to use a colour that is slightly lighter than your foundation however if it is puffiness under the eyes you're trying to hide then a slightly darker shade of concealer would be best.

All mascaras have a use by date. Mascara has an anti bacterial agent in it which makes it safe to use for about three months. After that your mascara could be a breeding ground for bacteria which could lead to eye infections. So don't hang on to out of date mascara. You can usually tell by the way it smells and the texture which becomes thick and just doesn't go on the same way anymore.

The best way to preserve your mascara and make it last is to apply it properly. Most people pump the wand in and out of the tube but this just adds air into the tube making the mascara dry up. Instead you should unscrew the lid and stir the mascara wand to load the brush. When you apply the mascara, start by wiggling the wand at the base of the lashes. It is the mascara placed near the roots not the tips, which gives the illusion of length. Then pull the wand up through the lashes, wiggling as you go. Finish by placing the wand on top of your lashes at the base and pull through to the tips to remove any clumps. Once your mascara has dried, do not apply any further coats as you will end up with thick and clumpy lashes.

Enhancing Your Eyes With False Eyelashes

Follow these application steps as the very last thing you do in your makeup routine.

1. Measure the lashes to the length of your own eyelid. Do this by placing the fake lashes on your eye as if you were going to apply them. Then snip the ends off so that they fit your eyes. If they are too wide, they will feel uncomfortable and look fake.

2. Using a good quality lash glue (it usually comes with the lashes) and put a small amount on the top of your hand. Gently run the edge of the lashes through the glue and wait 15-20 seconds before you apply it to allow the glue to get tacky.

3. Tilt your head back, pick up the lashes with your tweezers and place them just above your lash line. Make sure both ends are well stuck then once you have applied it keep your eyes closed for a minute or two to give the glue a chance to dry. Do the same for the other side. This gets easier with practice.

4. Once the glue has dried, add a small amount of mascara to both your natural and fake lashes to blend them together.

Smoky eyes are sexy and beautiful and easy to achieve if you know how. You can make the smoky effect light or dark. A common colour used in this look is black, however, you can use any colour brown, purple, green, whatever you like!

You could even forget the eye shadow, eyeliner or blush, because let's "face" it, the lipstick matters the most! Here are some lipstick Do's and Don'ts to follow:

Lipstick Do's

1. Remove your natural color. Because your lips have colored pigments, your lips could actually change the color of the lipstick you chose from your favorite beauty supplier. Reds can become orange, browns can become red, and so on. So begin your lipstick application by priming your lips with foundation and powder to hide the natural color of your lips.

2. Use a lip liner. Lip liner can shape thin lips into full and luscious lips. Find a matching liner or a shade darker of your favorite lipstick. You can also use the tip of your lipstick to line your lips - this is a great trick! You can also use the liner as a base coat on your lips.

3. Balance: If you are wearing dark eye shadow or blush, balance it off with a softer lipstick shade.

4. Chill it. For easier sharpening of your lip liner or lipstick pencil, keep it cool by placing it in the refrigerator.

5. Mix it up. Try mixing different shades together. Even switching out shades from the top to bottom layer can provide a totally different and beautiful color.

5. Don't blot. If you want a more dramatic and bold look, avoid the blotting. A lot of experts believe that you should always blot after application, but that depends on the look you are trying to achieve. Blotting will tone down the color.

What You Need Before You Get Started

Arm yourself with the following items to achieve the perfect smoky eye:

Matte beige eyeshadow
Mascara
Brown eyeliner

Step 1 - Before you begin to get the look you want, you need to prep the skin around your eyes first in order for the makeup products to adhere properly and stick all day long. Start off by applying an eye primer or concealer all over your top and bottom eyelids. On the top, make sure to fade the product up to your eyebrow.

Step 2 - Apply your beige matte eyeshadow using the eyeshadow brush, and cover your entire lid, going up to the crease.

The American optometric Association suggests wearing sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation from the sun.

4. Go for seafood. The omega-3 fatty acid in seafood is not only good for the brain and for the heart; it is also good in decreasing the risk of acquiring diseases of the eyes. One study published in the "2011 Archives of Ophthalmology" found out that women who ate canned tuna and dark-fish meat just once a week had 42% lower risk for age-related macular degeneration than those who just ate fish less than once a month.

However, the real star nutrient isn't Vitamin A, but lutein. Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 1: Choose your eye shadow colours.

The traditional smokey eye makeup colours are, of course, black or grey. You are however not limited to these colour choices, you can also use less intense colours such as: violet, chocolate, coffee, dark pink, copper, dark green, dark blue or purple.
Remember when choosing eye shadow shades that colours should be chosen keeping in mind your eye colour, hair colour and skin tone and not the colour of the clothes you wear.
For smokey eye makeup you will need to choose 2 colour coordinated eye shadows. A darker feature colour and a lighter supporting colour.

For smokey eye makeup what feature colour eye shadow best suits blue eyes ?

For Blue eyes, in addition to black or grey, violet, purple or dark blue eye shadow will look great. The dark blue eye shadow in particular, as it will be darker than your eye colour, will accentuate your blue eyes.

Possible colours to choose from, for a soft sophisticated look, are: lilac, light peach, champagne, taupe, nude or a sand color. For a more dramatic high contrast look you could use a whitish colour eye shadow.

Choose a soft eyeliner pencil of the same colour or a complementary shade to your feature eye shadow.

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 3: Apply your foundation base.

Normally you would apply your full foundation before applying your eye makeup. This is not the case when doing smokey eye makeup. You should apply your eye makeup first, that way if you get some of your eye shadow on the rest of your face you won't ruin your foundation. This also helps avoid a raccoon eye look under your eye. For smoother eye shadow application, that lasts longer, you do however want to first apply a thin layer of foundation to your eyelids followed by a thin layer of face powder to set the foundation. This will give you a clean canvas for your eye shadow and will also help to prevent the eye shadow from creasing. This will also give you more even, accurate, eye shadow application.

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 4: Apply your eyeliner.

Line both the top and bottom rims of your eyes with your eyeliner pencil. Typically you would use a black or charcoal eyeliner pencil but you can also use a dark eyeliner pencil that matches your feature eye shadow colour. Make sure to go into the eyelash line itself (near the root of your eyelashes). Be sure to fill in any bare spaces between the eyelashes. Start from the inner corner of your eyes with a fine line. As you go outwards towards the corner of your eye make the line heavier. If you have any hard lines from using a heavy eyeliner pencil you will want to lightly smudge the line so it is softer and less harsh looking. This step is made a lot easier by using a Powderliner eyeliner pencil with a built in sponge tip for smudging.

Smokey eye makeup tip: Dark colors trend to make small eyes look even smaller. You can open your eyes up by applying eyeliner starting from the middle of the bottom eyelash line, rather than the inside corner, and going to the outer corner of the eye. If your eyes are not smallish feel free to apply the eyeliner from corner to corner.

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 5: Apply your eye shadows

Using your larger eye shadow brush apply your supporting eye shadow colour to your eyelids, up to the base of your eyebrows.
Now, using your feature eye shadow colour, and your small eye shadow brush, apply your dark feature eye shadow onto the eyeliner and then blend it upward to the crease of your eyelid. When blending your feature eye shadow keep as much of the colour intensity as possible along the eyelash line and particularly in the outer corners of your eyes.

Smokey eye makeup tip: Remember smudge and blend so the eyeliner and eye shadows go together seamlessly.

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 6: Apply your mascara

Smokey eye makeup tip: Curl your eyelashes before applying mascara, this opens your eyes up.

Apply 2 or 3 coats of black mascara applying the mascara in thin coats to avoid clumping.

Smokey Eye Makeup Guide Step 7: Complete your smokey eye makeup look

Complete your foundation being careful not to mess up your beautiful smokey eyes.

Keeping your lips neutral gives smokey eyes their real impact. Use a flesh toned lip pencil and a pink or caramel shade of lipstick or lip gloss to give your lips a subtle finish.

For your eyebrows you can use your normal eyebrow pencil. You could also use a shade darker than normal to complement your smokey eyes.

Apply a subtle finish of rose or tawny blusher just to the apples of your cheeks blending away to the edges into your hairline. This finishes the face without competing with your smoldering smokey eyes.
