Toyota Tundra Conducts Recall of 2011

Approximately 51,000 Toyota Tundra trucks from the 2011 model year are subject to a new voluntary safety recall to inspect the rear drive shaft.

According to the Japanese automaker, the rear drive shaft in a very small percentage of the affected vehicles (0.05%) may include a component (slip yoke) that could break due to improper casting during the foundry process.

Toyota said that it is aware of only one incident in which the drive shaft slip yoke broke in a customer-owned vehicle, adding that it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries associated with this condition.

The company said owners of the involved Tundra trucks will get a letter next month informing them to bring their vehicles in for inspection. Toyota said that in a limited number of cases, dealers may have to replace the rear drive shaft.

Toyota Yaris HSD Concept 2012

Toyota premiered its first superimini hybrid model based on the next-generation Yaris at the Geneva Motor Show today. The Yaris HSD Concept is essentially a teaser version of the production hybrid model that Toyota will launch in Europe in 2012.

In a similar fashion to the Auris HSD before it, the Hybrid Synergy Drive version of the Yaris features some bespoke styling cues that separate it from its conventional sibling.

These include the large trapezoidal lower grille, the vertical “aero” corners housed in the front bumper that minimise air turbulence and the rear reflectors in the rear bumper. Other changes include the 18-inch rims, specially designed to aid brake cooling.

For the sake of aerodynamics, the Yaris HSD uses thin rear-view cameras instead of conventional door mirrors and even the shape of door handles has been modeled to improve airflow around the car. Building on the eco theme, the roof of the car is covered with solar panels that provide power for the air conditioning system.

Although no official figures are offered, Toyota stresses that the Yaris HSV produces zero CO2, NOx and particulates tailpipe emissions while in full EV mode. The Yaris hybrid will be built at Toyota's Valenciennes plant in France and will be on sale during the second half of 2012.

By 2020, the Japanese manufacturer plans to offer full-hybrid variants for its entire European lineup.

Geneva 2011: EU Toyota Prius+ MPV Gains Two More Seats Over

Geneva Toyota revealed its European-market Prius + MPV, known stateside as the Prius V. Instead of five seats, the Euro Prius + will get seven seats when it debuts in early 2012.

Also unlike its USDM counterpart, the Prius + gets a three middle row seats that fold individually (instead of our 60/40 split) and a 50/50 folding third-row seat.

The Prius + should burn approximately 5.9 liters / 100 km (using US combined city/highway figures) thanks to its hybrid power train and a drag coefficient of 0.29. It is also the first non-plug-in hybrid Toyota to use a lithium-ion battery pack and, like its Prius sibling, gets EV, ECO, and POWER driving modes.

Toyota Tries to Break Indian Market

The world's largest automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., is eyeing emerging markets with a new low cost model that was unveiled this week in India. The production version of the 2010 New Delhi Show Etios Concept is available at launch as a four-door sedan model, but will be joined by a five door hatchback called the Etios Liva in April of 2011.

The company said the Etios has been developed specifically for Indian customers and will be built at a plant in Bidadi, near Bangalore. However, Toyota eventually plans to offer the small sedan in other emerging markets such as China, Brazil, Thailand and possibly certain regions of South America.

The 4.265mm (167.9-in.) long sedan boasts a rather large boot with a luggage space of 595-liters and is powered by a newly developed 1.5L, 16V DOHC engine coupled to a 5-Speed manual transmission. The Etios sedan will be available in four variants, J, G, V and VX, with prices ranging between 4.96 Lakhs and 6.86 Lakhs making it the company's most affordable offering in India.

Commenting on the launch of the Etios, Mr. Akio Toyoda, President TMC said: “India is a key market for our overall strategic growth plans, and the launch of the Etios is definitely a milestone not only for Toyota in India but for Toyota globally."

2011 Toyota iQ with Euro5 Engines

Toyota UK is accepting orders for its modestly updated iQ mini, which will make its debut at this week's Paris Motor Show. Priced from £10,158 on the road, the 2011 model year iQ benefits from some barely noticeable changes inside and an engine lineup that has been revised to meet Euro 5 emissions standards.

Along with the introduction of a new gray interior with contrasting black upper trims on the doors and toning fabric upholstery or optionally with Kuru black leather upholstery, the iQ's cabin also gets new soft-touch materials on the dashboard and the door panels.

Other updates include the "manta ray" motif panels on the door and center console that adopt a new black finish and a new scarlet surround on the center console.

For 2011, the 1.0-liter VVT-i and 1.33-liter Dual VVT-i petrol engines have been revised to meet Euro 5 emissions standards, with Toyota claiming the changes had no impact on performance or fuel efficiency.

As such, the 1.0-litre (manual) model delivers 99g/km and 64.2mpg UK on the combined cycle and the 1.33-liter (manual) with Stop & Start returns 113g/km and 57.6mpg UK.

Toyota and Lexus With Six New Hybrids and EV by 2012

Japanese automaker Toyota is readying for a big hybrid fight. Undaunted by the recent drop in hybrid sales, Toyota plans to launch six new hybrid models by end of 2012, one of which will be a Vitz / Yaris hybrid.

In a presentation in Detroit on Monday, Toyota Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada explained that two of the six new hybrids will be for Lexus and four for Toyota adding that all of them will be new and not next-generation versions of existing hybrid models.

Some will be hybrid only models (i.e. there will be no gasoline-only variant), though Uchiyamada would not elaborate further as to what body type or segment these new vehicles would be.

The carmaker is also readying an electric vehicle co-developed with Tesla (makers of the all electric Roadster) and possible rival to Nissan's Leaf EV. Uchiyamada has confirmed that this will be shown at the 2010 Los Angeles Motor Show. The new Toyota EV could possibly be the same all-electric small car the automaker had previous stated they were working on.

This comes after a string of recalls (11 million vehicles globally) hurt the brand's image of reliability, something Uchiyamada plants to fix by extending is vehicle development time setting up a team of 100 engineers to audit its production lines.

Massive 20-inch alloy wheels and a rear diffuser on a Toyota Land Cruiser? Welcome to the fabulous world of Wald International and its 'Black Bison' series.

Toyota's engineers may not have had this in mind when they were designing their range-topping luxury off-roader, but what the market wants, the market gets. Following the release of a set of teaser shots back in March, Wald International has published a full image gallery (31 to be precise) on its new Black Bison package for the Land Cruiser.

The blacked out styling kit for the Land Cruiser that now includes a glossy black front grille comprises of a new front bumper with larger front intakes, a pair of twin fog lights and a lower spoiler, beefy side-steps incorporated in the side skirts and wider fenders.

At the back, the styling package adds a wider bumper that houses a rear diffuser and quad exhaust pipes, rear gate spoiler (under the window) and a roof spoiler that would make any WRX owner green from envy. Customers can choose between black or dark chrome 20-inch alloy wheels.

Toyota FJ Cruiser SUV to Australian

Toyota's Australian arm said on Monday it will add the FJ Cruiser SUV to its range of models late in the first quarter of 2011.

Australian buyers will get their first taste of the domestic market version with a pre-production model of the retro-styled SUV with the small reverse-opening rear doors at the Sydney International Motor Show on October 15.

"FJ Cruiser has loads of character that isn't found in any other SUV, let alone one that is built for off-road terrain," said Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner. "It will be a lot of fun to own and drive, satisfying those who want a modern vehicle with the boulder-crawling spirit of Toyota's legendary off-roaders," he added.

No specific details were given about the FJ Cruiser's powertrain options, but Toyota said the Australian market models, which will be imported from Japan, will come with "a powerful engine and dual-range 4WD".

In the U.S., the FJ Cruiser is offered with a 258-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine and the choice of two-wheel drive and a five-speed automatic transmission, or four-wheel drive and either an electronically shifted five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox.

Toyota Tacoma with SEMA TRD Packages

Toyota showcased the Tacoma TX concept pickup truck fitted with various TRD (Toyota Racing Development) items at last year's SEMA Show. Now, the Japanese automaker is introducing two new packages inspired by the concept that are called the T|X and T|X Pro and are available on the Tacoma V6 Access Cab or V6 Double Cab on both 4x2 PreRunner and 4x4 models. And if you're wondering, the "T|X" stands for Tacoma Extreme.

Both limited edition kits are based on the Off-Road Package, which features several goodies such as an electronic locking rear diff, progressive-rate front springs, Bilstein shock absorbers, a 28-mm front stabilizer bar and B.F. Goodrich Rugged Trail tires.

Added features include fog lamps, a 400W/115V powerpoint in the bed, sport seats with unique upholstery, plus an overhead console with a compass and outside temperature display.

The basic T|X package adds 16-inch black alloy bead-lock wheels shod in 265/70R16 tires, black tube side steps, a stainless steel exhaust tip and unique exterior decals. The MSRP is $1,699, which Toyota claims, represents a saving of $754 compared with a standard Tacoma fitted with these options separately.

The T|X Pro Package simply adds a TRD cat-back performance exhaust system to give the V6 model a throatier sound and, according to the company, a small boost in power. It's also priced at $1,699, offering buyers savings of $720.

Toyota will start production 2011 Tacoma T|X Pro Package now, while the T|X Package will launch in September.

Toyota And Tesla to Build Electric Vehicle

Toyota Motor Corporation and Tesla Motors have announced that they intend to cooperate on the production of electric-vehicles, parts and production system and engineering support. Toyota will purchase a $50 million of Tesla’s common stock issued in a private placement to close immediately subsequent to the closing of Tesla’s currently planned IPO.

Toyota will invest $50 million for a private placement of Tesla common stock and the state of California will provide a sales tax abatement to Tesla for capital equipment expenditures to tool up the plant. Musk estimated that the abatement will amount to about $20 million over the next several years.

The NUMMI - New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. - plant located in Fremont, only 17 miles from Tesla's new headquarters, ceased operations on April 1 after producing its last car, a red Toyota Corolla S believed to be destined for a museum in Japan.

The first car to roll of the production line will be Tesla's Model S electric sedan which costs around $57,400. While Tesla will still be late to the game when compared to the LEAF or the Volt, this amps up the company's reputation ten-fold. For a recent study just named Toyota as one of the top three companies consumers would buy an EV from.

Tesla Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation Intend to Work Jointly on EV Development, TMC to Invest in Tesla

TMC has, since its foundation in 1937, operated under the philosophy of "contributing to the society through the manufacture of automobiles," and made cars that satisfy its many customers around the world. TMC introduced the first-generation Prius hybrid vehicle in 1997, and produced approximately 2.5 million hybrids in the twelve years since. Late last year, TMC started lease of Prius Plug-in Hybrids, which can be charged using an external power source such as a household electric outlet. The company also plans to introduce EVs into the market by 2012.

Tesla Motors Announces Factory in Northern California
Silicon Valley factory will become the home of the Model S sedan

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Tesla Motors has purchased the former NUMMI factory in Fremont, California, where it will build the Model S sedan and future Tesla vehicles. As recently as April of 2010, the NUMMI factory was used by Toyota to produce the Corolla and Tacoma vehicles using the industry-leading Toyota production system. It is one of the largest, most advanced and cleanest automotive production plants in the world.

It is capable of producing half a million vehicles per year or approximately 1 percent of total worldwide car production. The award-winning plant was the birthplace of the vaunted Toyota Production System, a widely copied system that lead to dramatic quality improvements and unprecedented manufacturing flexibility and worker satisfaction.

The Model S is expected to be the first pure electric premium sedan and is designed from the ground up to take full advantage of the electric vehicle architecture. The sedan, which Tesla unveiled in March 2009, has an anticipated base price of $49,900, including a federal tax credit, and is intended to deliver the foremost design and technology in the automotive world. With an optional extended-range battery pack, the Model S will travel over 300 miles per charge.

The factory is located in the city of Fremont near Northern California's Silicon Valley, very near Tesla's Palo Alto headquarters. The location means Tesla can hire best-in-class engineers in Silicon Valley. The short distance also ensures a tight feedback loop between engineering, manufacturing and other divisions within the company.

Toyota produced its last car there just last month. Tesla began discussions to acquire the site this spring, when it was also evaluating opportunities in Downey and Long Beach. The turnkey nature of the facility with its recent production of top quality vehicles and its considerable room for expansion made it stand out from other sites.

7 IRV'S SHEET: Setting the Record Straight

Mr. Jackson's article then notes that the 2008 Sequoia was introduced in Los Angeles against a backdrop of a large screen that showed a forest, "…that presumably will disappear with global warming fueled by cars such as this," according to the piece.

While carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from motor vehicles do contribute to global warming, they're far from being the largest single cause. What they are guilty of is being obvious and visible, and therefore the easiest cause to blame. In fact, there are many other causes.

According to the Federal Energy Department, CO2 emissions – the greenhouse gasses that Mr. Jackson worries will kill the forests in the photo he saw - from coal-fired electrical generating plants total approximately 35% of total CO2 emissions in the U.S. That's as much as the total generated by every airplane, diesel locomotive and automobile in the country combined, according to the Energy Department.

The piece continued, "The reality is that Toyota works right along with Detroit in limiting the alternatives to large SUVs."

A simple visit to a Toyota showroom, or to our website, will illustrate that we offer many alternatives to fullsize SUVs. These alternatives include not just our popular Prius, but also our high-mpg Yaris models, our Scion line, our new Corolla, our Highlander SUV and Highlander hybrid and our Camry and Camry hybrid. All of these vehicles are at, or near, the top of their categories in terms of fuel economy.

Mr. Jackson then claims that Toyota works with America's Big Three automakers GM, Ford, and Chrysler, trying to kill or soften attempts in Congress to raise fuel-efficiency standards.
The fact is that Toyota, in concert with the Detroit auto manufacturers, vigorously supports an increase in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. We have said repeatedly that we support an increase in CAFE. You can find some of those calls for such an increase right here on Open Road. And just today, we reiterated our support for congressional CAFE legislation and commended leaders in congress for their dedication to pushing out a difficult agreement on fuel economy.
Mr. Jackson's piece then goes on to say that Toyota's introduction of the 2008 Sequoia "… is a reminder that despite 9/11 and despite the disastrous invasion of oil-rich Iraq, the company remains happy to profit off Americans who cannot look past their hood ornament. Sport utility vehicles remain more profitable than cars. As the Chicago Tribune wrote last week, 'Big SUVs haven't lost their following . . . it remains a boon for automakers.'"

The Chicago Trib's point is an important one. If SUVs haven't lost their following, how can Toyota be responsible to its stockholders (to whom it is compelled by both law and by ethics to be responsible), and to its customers, if it fails to offer such vehicles?

Moreover, it is the fact that we can make a profit on vehicles like the Sequoia that allows us to spend nearly $8.4 billion per year – that's about $23 million each and every day – on the kind of research and development required to come up with game-changing vehicles like the Prius, with game-changing technologies like Hybrid Synergy Drive and our hydrogen fuel-cell technology.
Next, Mr. Jackson's piece quoted Toyota General Manager Bob Carter as saying, "Some buyers still have no alternative to large SUVs," and added, "That is a laugh since it long ago was reported that 95 percent of SUV owners never take their vehicle off road (and as we lose more and more green space, we certainly would not want them to). There are few things an SUV carries or pulls that a well-designed wagon could not."

Going off road, or staying on it, is irrelevant, even if Mr. Jackson choses to ignore the fact that many Americans do, in fact, take their recreation in dedicated off-road areas.
In two-wheel-drive form, Sequoia is, just like a station wagon, capable of the jobs active families expect it to do – seat up to eight people in comfort and haul their luggage. Is it a '60s Country Squire? No, it's much better than that – safer, more comfortable and much more efficient.

In any case, it seems likely that Mr. Jackson has never had to tow a horse trailer or a boat, or make his way up a slippery road to a ski lodge. His position also suggests that he's never had to haul a gaggle of children on a vacation trip. If he'd done any of those things, he might have a better understanding of the Sequoia, be it in two- or four-wheel-drive form.

Mr. Jackson's piece goes on to say, "In praising the Sequoia, Carter said the basic concept remains the same. That is precisely the problem. Just when Toyota was creating a new art form for transportation, it continues to push what clearly should be an artifact."

In making this statement, Mr. Jackson suggests that he believes that Toyota has ceased its drive toward sustainable mobility – the new art-form of transportation he mentions. In fact, our efforts to enhance Hybrid Synergy Drive, to improve battery technology, to perfect so-called plug-in hybrids, to develop clean diesel engines and to develop hydrogen fuel-cell technology continue at full speed. But while all of that advanced technology is being developed, Toyota – indeed, no manufacturer – can decide what should, and should not, be or become an artifact, as Mr. Jackson puts it. That's the consumer's job.

And that's the problem with Mr. Jackson's position. He'd put the automobile manufacturers, and perhaps himself, in charge of dictating what people will drive. Toyota's position is that people should make their own decisions about what they drive. It's our job to provide them with the best choices possible, which is precisely what we're doing.

We think it's entirely laudable that commentators like Mr. Jackson wish to participate in the conversation about fuel economy and exhaust emissions. These are important topics and are worthy of the attention of all Americans.

Unfortunately, commentators like Mr. Jackson sometimes seem to write from emotion instead of reason, and to allow themselves to be blinded to truth, and to easily obtainable facts, by their fervor for greenness and fuel economy. It's as though being in favor of low emissions and high mpg makes them immune from the laws of nature, science and economics, and suspends their responsibility to learn, and then tell, the whole story. And that is, at best, unfortunate.

One Million Toyota Corollas

Toyota Australia today confirmed the landmark which has been nearing for the last few months, the company has now sold more than one million Toyota Corollas in Australia.

The Corolla has been in Australia for more than 40 years and Toyota believes its success is due to Australia's love-affair with the fuel-efficient, reliable four-cylinder car.

Speaking about the milestone, David Buttner, Toyota Australia's senior executive director of sales and marketing said it's "…because Corolla has always captured the imagination of the buying public. It's dependable, affordable and fuel-efficient - core values that bring Corolla drivers back to this popular vehicle, year after year after year."

In Australia, Toyota makes 1/5 of its sales from the Corolla, making it the company's best-selling model.

Fortunately for Toyota, the new 10th generation model shows no signs of slowing down either, after 40 years, Toyota still manages to attract more buyers than ever to the model.

"That's because Toyota has constantly managed to come up with the right concept to stay ahead of the times. I'd like to thank Australian drivers for helping to make Toyota Corolla the world's most popular car." Mr Buttner said.

100,000 Corollas have sold in the last 2 and a bit years (July 2005 -> September 2007), in comparison, it took more than eight years for the first 100,000 Corollas to be sold after the car's introduction in 1967.

Worldwide, over 33 million buyers have chosen the Corolla, making the model the most successful and biggest-selling car of all time.

We came across this Gumpert Apollo replica that's based on a second generation Toyota MR2 (1990-1999) on eBay. While the original mid-engined Apollo supercar gets an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter, twin-turbo V8 with 650HP or an insane 800HP in Sport form, the Toyota-based replica makes do with a modified version of the Japanese sports car's four-cylinder turbo engine, with the seller claiming it yields "255 WHP at 15psi and 303 WHP at around 19psi" on the dyno. Lexus Stops Deliveries and May Recall HS 250h after NHTSA Tests Find that Rear-End Crash Leads to Excessive Fuel Spill

Toyota has just issued an official release stating its intention to stop deliveries and conduct a voluntary safety recall of around 17,000 examples of the 2010MY Lexus HS 250h hybrids to address the NHTSA's concerns over the excessive amounts of gasoline that were leaked during a standard rear-end crash test performed by the safety agency.

The Japanese automaker said that during the Lexus HS 250h's development phase it had tested the hybrid car using the same protocol and found the vehicles to comply fully with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 301.

TORRANCE, Calif., June 25, 2010 – Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today filed a Noncompliance Information Report (NCIR) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), informing the agency of the company's intent to conduct a voluntary safety recall of potentially 17,000 2010 model year Lexus HS 250h vehicles to address a compliance issue with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 301.

As part of its annual compliance testing program, the NHTSA recently conducted a test of the 2010 model year HS 250h. The test involved striking the vehicle with a deformable barrier from the rear at approximately 50 mph. The vehicle is struck by a moving deformable barrier with a 70 percent overlap. As part of the test, the vehicle was then rotated on its longitudinal axis incrementally to each successive increment of 90 degrees. During the rotation, the vehicle exhibited fuel spillage that exceeded the requirement in the standard.

During vehicle development, Lexus tested the HS 250h using the same protocol and found the vehicles to comply fully with the FMVSS 301. Lexus is currently working to identify the reason for the different test results and the cause of this noncompliance.

At the present time, Lexus has not identified a remedy to address this issue, but it is working hard to do so promptly and will notify owners as soon as one is developed. Until then, as required by federal law, dealers will not deliver any new vehicles in their inventory that are covered by this NCIR until remedied.

Toyota May Recall Up to 270,000 Cars Including Lexus IS, GS & LS Over Engine Problems

It looks like Toyota might be hit by another recall (the second one in a week after the HS 250h announcement) as the Japanese automaker admitted today that about 270,000 of its Lexus IS, GS and LS, and Toyota Crown vehicles may have a problem causing engines to stall.

In particular, the world's biggest carmaker said it discovered "improperly functioning valve springs" in some engines that could lead to abnormal engine noise or unstable idling, and in some instances, even cause the engine to stop while in motion. Toyota said that there are no reported accidents related to this issue.

The models that could be affected by this problem are the Lexus GS 350, GS 450h, GS 460, IS 350, LS 460, LS 600h and LS 600hL, and the Toyota Crown, the company said adding that around 90,000 of those vehicles were sold in Japan, with the rest in other markets around the world.

Toyota issued an additional statement in the UK stating that 3,200 Lexus vehicles including the GS 450h, GS 460, LS 460 and LS 600h models that were sold in Britain may be affected by this issue.

The company stated that "additional information detailing further actions will be provided as and when it becomes available."

Toyota South Africa has entered the small panel van market with an adaptation of the Avanza MPV.

The Avanza Panel Van is offered at a highly competitive price and is based on the entry level Avanza 1.3 model.

The Avanza is all about space, utility and affordability in a compact vehicle.

These factors made the original MPV an ideal candidate for a panel van version that provides 955 litres of load space (VDA measurement method).

In its panel van form the load area features a flat floor with tie-down hooks.

A cargo barrier separates the front cab area from the load compartment.

Side windows are blanked out with white vinyl material.

Excellent access to the load area is provided by the two rear side doors and rear tailgate.

An engineering target set for the Avanza MPV was that it should have excellent driving dynamics for its position in the market and that it should provide a stress-free and smooth driving experience in all driving conditions.

Performance and economy of operation were also carefully optimised.

The body structure of the Avanza is based on a highly rigid monocoque structure that provides a strong driver and passenger safety cell and stable handling characteristics.

The Avanza Panel Van is powered by Toyota's 1.3 litre twin-overhead camshaft 16-valve K3-VE engine which produces 67 kW at 6 000 r/min and 120 Nm at 4 400 r/min.

Service intervals are 15 000 km. A 4-year/60 000 km service plan is included in the price.

Warranty is three years/100 000 km with AA Roadside Assistance for the duration of the warranty.

Upgrades for 2011 Toyota Tacoma, Priced from $16,365

The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck is entering the new model year with additional features and a revised lineup. For the 2011MY, the Japanese automaker discontinued three manual transmission models and added five four-cylinder, four-speed automatic models including the Access Cab 4x2 PreRunner, Double Cab 4x2, Double Cab 4x2 PreRunner, Regular Cab 4x4, and Access Cab 4x4.
Added features for the 2011MY Tacoma include a newly designed grille on all Base, SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport and X-Runner models. Regular Cab models now come with standard air conditioning while the 4x2 versions also gain standard 15-inch steel wheels.

Tacomas equipped with the available six-disc CD changer now come with integrated satellite radio (subscription required), while the company also introduced a new Convenience Extra Value Package for Double Cab models with cruise control, a sliding rear window with privacy glass, remote keyless entry and steering wheel audio controls.

The Japanese firm's pickup truck is available with two engines, a 2.7-liter four-pot with 159HP and 180 lb-ft of peak torque, and a 4.0-liter V6 pumping out 236 ponies and 266 lb-ft of torque.

The base MSRP (not including destination and handling fees) for the 2011 Tacoma will range from $16,365 for the Regular Cab 4x2 equipped with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission, to $27,525 for the Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 long bed with a 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic.

Toyota said that the first examples of the 2011 Tacoma will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships in late July.

2008 TRD HiLux 4000SL Review & Road Test

The all new TRD HiLux… a performance utility it ain’t…

Model Tested:

2008 TRD HiLux 4000SL – $64,990 (RRP)

I thought perhaps if time goes by, the TRD will make sense, perhaps it just confused me? Perhaps Toyota had given me a less than perfect example? Not so, excluding Anthony, the rest of us at CarAdvice are yet to fall in love with anything with a TRD badge.

ere is the essential problem. Despite what Toyota says, TRD is in fact in competition with HSV and FPV. You can’t launch a performance brand and expect not to be compared to the traditional players. Sure the TRD Aurion is far more comparable to its Ford and Holden counterparts than the HiLux is to the HSV Maloo and FPV Tornado (F6), but you still have to compare.

I will try and get the good bits out of the way and perhaps try and convince myself through this review that the TRD does make sense, to someone.
Under the bonnet and with subtle TRD badging sits a large 4.0-litre, quad-cam, V6 petrol engine that delivers 225kW of power and 453Nm of torque.

Yes, only 225kW from a 4.0-litre V6 with a supercharger. Somewhat strange? More so when you consider the 3.5-litre in the TRD Aurion tends to make more power (241kW) but obviously has less torque (400Nm).
TRD has managed to increase power over the Dual-cab HiLux by 28.5 percent while torque goes up by 20.4 per cent. Which in a way explains the 25 per cent price increase. But is it warranted?

Short answer? This car is a tad ridiculous, I am not sure why TRD would put their name to it, because as far as performance or handling goes, or hell, even just sporty nature, the only thing this utility has going for it is a supercharger.

Sure, it has monotube Bilstein shock absorbers, larger front brake rotors and callipers, a body kit, and if you’re nice they’ll even throw in a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever. But how does that warrant a TRD badge?

I admire Toyota, they make cars that leave many other manufacturers in envy, but if I remember correctly, we were promised some time ago that the Big T would do away with its bland ‘fridge-on-wheels’ image and revitalise itself? If TRD is suppose to be the answer, it is a complete failure.
How can Toyota associate its Formula 1 technology with this utility, about the only thing the HiLux and the Toyota Formula 1 car have in common is the badge. But let’s be fair, the HiLux has enormous appeal, so much so that it’s consistently the third best selling car in the country.

Therefore from a business and marketing perspective, Toyota would be mad not to launch a TRD variant, as there are undoubtedly many buyers who just have to have the best. But what damage does an unfinished product have on an establishing brand?
My week in the TRD started off when I collected the HiLux from Toyota headquarters in Brisbane. From here, it became an interesting experience, because despite how much I began to despise this vehicle, I knew there were countless tradies that dreamt of it at night. In that respect, this car is brilliant – a brilliant marketing exercise.

Drive it through a construction site and you’ll know what an attractive blonde feels like. Work stops, tools are switched off and fingers begin pointing. “It’s a TRD!”… well thank you, yes it is.
“Awesome Ute mate…” – Thanks! “Can I get a ride?” – Aw, maybe next time?
You get more compliments in this than in a hot Italian supercar, but we are after all, in Australia.
Whoever is in charge of Toyota marketing, needs to get a pay raise, as not only has the Prius become a icon (false or not) and started a revolution, but it now seems that as long as there is a Toyota badge on it, it will sell.

Getting inside the car is surprising to say the least! My evaluation vehicle was the HiLux 4000SL, which sits above the 4000S. For that L (and an extra $5000) you get leather seat trim, carpet floor covering, TRD carpet floor mats (in lieu of rubber), six-CD in-dash changer and Optitron speedometer.

There is also the part-time four-wheel drive with Toyota’s automatic disconnecting front differential (ADD) which is not available on the 4000S. The ADD allows for on-the-move shifting between two and four-wheel drive.

As far as the interior goes, it’s a mélange of colours and materials. The leather seats are nice, and definitely made for those of us that like our fast food, but the rest of the interior simply doesn’t match. The seatbelt buckles are a completely different colour, so is the high-low gear selector. Then there is the stereo.

Turn on the ignition key – thankfully there is no start button – and the 4.0-litre comes to life, although without much of a roar. If you want to nail it, leave it in 4WD, unless of course you feel the need to entertain yourself.

So how does 225kW and 453Nm of torque feel in a HiLux, it feels good, but not great. The Ute can rush from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds, which is not bad, but is by no means quick.
Also while it’s getting you to the speed limit, the whine from the supercharger is not what one would expect, it sounds more like a Prius on steroids. A very tinny electric noise, which left many passengers extremely confused.

At least the gear shifts are smooth, thanks to Toyota’s five-speed automatic transmission. Even then, it has a tendency to hunt gears on the odd occasion.
No doubt the Bilstein shocks help (a little), but don’t expect to go around any corners like you would in even a normal sedan, there is still enormous amounts of body roll – again, why the TRD badge?
The HiLux actually comes from Thailand but the TRD bits are put together here in Australia and if you open the bonnet, this becomes rather obvious.

I am not nit-picking here, but even the clips which hold the wiring looms are of random colour, then of course, there is the cold air intake which sits in the driver side wheel guard, this is great for performance, but I thought this was suppose to be a capable off-road utility? Not exactly water proof.
Speaking of off-roading, the HiLux was taken to a 4WD track near Australia Zoo and I humbly bow down to the Toyota gods as this thing can pretty much go everywhere. It can also carry a 948kg payload.

Fuel consumption is officially 12.9L/100km, although real world tests returned around 14L/100km according to the car’s own trip computer. The HiLux also sips 95RON fuel and I would need a lot of convincing not to go for the 3.0-litre turbo diesel.

No doubt it’s a confusing car to analyse. On one hand it’s every tradesman’s wet dream, on the other, it’s nothing more than a glorified HiLux undeserving of the TRD badge.
Perhaps I am far to concerned with the actual performance and feel of this car and I am not appreciating it for what it is. Maybe I had much higher expectations of TRD
I recently convinced my folks to buy a new Toyota Corolla, which they did, for less than $30,000. So why is it then, that a $65,000 car has essentially the same stereo head unit, with the addition of Bluetooth?

he sound quality that comes out of the HiLux is incomparable to nearly anything else on the road today, and I don’t mean that in a good way. The cheapest Kia has more bass and a crisper sound. To top it off, there are no audio controls on the steering wheel. So where does your $65,000 go? Surely the “?” tattoo on the blonde didn’t cost that much?

It’s also worth noting that the wheels on the TRD look somewhat outdated, Toyota must come up with a better looking set of rims for their range-topping HiLux.

Either way if TRD wants to be taken as a serious performance brand, some serious thought is absolutely essential!

Toyota Is Strong

When you become number one, everyone wants to pick on you. Toyota has been the dominant force in the Australian car market for years, but it’s also the world’s largest manufacturer (overtaking General Motors) and shows no real signs of slowing down in Australia.

It seems the recent negative media attention towards Toyota has given the company a reboot, with boss Akio Toyoda eager to start a new golden age for the company his grandfather founded in 1933.
Looking at our market in Australia this year, Toyota has sold 86,213 vehicles (from 01/01 to 31/05). Every other brand put together has managed just 335,253 vehicles. That means more than one out of every five new vehicles sold every single day is a Toyota.

The Japanese giant currently leads the medium car, SUV compact, SUV medium and SUV large segments in Australia. Not exactly an easy feat to achieve given Australian’s love affair with Ford and Holden.

The overwhelming media coverage of its accelerator issues in the United States has done the company no favours but it’s only fair to admire the Big T’s achievements despite its recent troubles

Drift Scion xB with 2JZ Toyota Supra Engine Built by Rogue Status

The epitome of Japanese sports cars still lies with the infamous Toyota Supra and its 2JZ inline-6cyl engine. The tuner company Rogue Status knows this all too well, so well, that they used the 2JZ Toyota Supra engine for a drift Scion xB. Of course the xB is not your 1^st choice, or for that matter any choice, for a Toyota Supra motor. 2JZs belongs in a rear-wheel-drive Lexus or any other semi-sporty Toyota but not the boxy Scion xB right? Rogue Status went all out enlisting the help of Stephan Papadakis who is a well-known figure in the automotive tuning world for modifying and turning one-of-a-kind vehicles.

Rogue Status are big fans of Tanner Foust and Ken Gushi who both drive the RWD versions of Scion tC’s in the Formula Drift Series. They would know better than most what needs to be done to build such a creative mixture not to mention making the decision to use the 2JZ which is one of the best foundations to work off of in terms of tuning and performance from an engine.

Australia Toyota HC-CV

Toyota Australia will come up with their own Camry Hybrid. But because they're so eagerly want to show the costumers what they're working on, they showed off a concept of the Camry Hybrid they're working on, at the 2009 Melbourne Motor Show. Toyota Australia called it HC-CV (Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle). What is it exactly? Well, it's essentially the recently-updated 2010 Camry Hybrid, but with some cosmetic changes to make it Australia's own. Blue Toyota logos, a modified front-fascia with LEDs on the bumper and satin chrome on the front grille, aluminum mirrors, rear-boot lid, and a pearl white body-paint. Inside, Toyota added metallic blue highlights with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive logo on the leather seats.
Ofcourse when the production is out in Australia, don't expect any major changes from this concept. Also don't expect it to be sold to "the rest of the world" market, but we might see something similar with those LEDs on the bumpers for our normal Camry.

2009 Toyota iQ Reviews

The final production version of the revolutionary Toyota iQ makes its debut at the 2008 Paris motor show. Last seen as a near-final design at the Geneva show earlier this year, iQ is a city car that is so innovative that - like the Toyota Prius - it stands as a major milestone for future vehicle development.

The radical thinking behind Toyota iQ turns conventional car design on its head. Toyota engineers went to extraordinary lengths to redesign, re-engineer or relocate components to achieve their goal of a car that is less than three metres long, yet has four seats inside with no compromise on space, comfort or driving fun.

Toyota iQ redefines what a car should be in today's era of congested cities and increased environmental awareness, not least by achieving carbon dioxide emissions levels that start at 99g/km. At the same time it is fun to drive with outstanding dynamics and advanced powertrain technology.

Hiroki Nakajima, Toyota iQ chief Engineer, explains: "For the development of iQ my research for a design concept befitting a stylish and small, sophisticated car began by envisioning the customer. My theory was that the group of people most suited to this car's style, small size and premium edge would be described as 'post-modern' - people who demonstrate independence in their choice of lifestyle and values."

Toyota iQ can be ordered from now, with delivery taking place in January 2009. Full-year sales volume for Europe is expected to be around 80,000 units.

DESIGN

Five years ago Toyota launched a programme to radically improve vehicle packaging, focusing on breakthrough solutions for miniaturising key vehicle features. The outcome of this project formed the basis for the development of Toyota iQ.

The objective was a new kind of city car, one that would accommodate four people within an overall length of less than three metres. The result was a landmark solution that will have a long term influence on Toyota's future vehicle development. Toyota iQ is the ultimate expression of refined, yet environmentally efficient urban mobility.

The extraordinary interior space in a car that measures just 2,985mm long, 1,500mm high and 1,680mm wide is a tribute to the determination and ingenuity of Toyota's design and engineering team.

The fact it can carry four people (three adults plus a child) in comfort and safety at motorway speeds, is just the beginning of the story. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, Toyota has created an ingenious and distinctive new city car. And with its proportionally large, 2,000mm wheelbase, Toyota iQ has a compact yet muscular stance that is like no other car.

Toyota iQ's design represents the essence of Toyota's J-factor heritage, which embraces the finest elements of Japanese aesthetics, such as miniaturisation and modernism. Most importantly it brings contradictory elements into harmony, such as "small yet spacious" or "hi-tech yet human".

J-factor is the foundation of Toyota's Vibrant Clarity design philosophy, through which long-standing paradoxes are resolved, such as how to create vehicles that are energised and dynamic, but at the same time rational and ingenious.

One of the three key elements of Vibrant Clarity is Freeform Geometrics, which can be seen in Toyota iQ's techno-organic design, for example, in the "manta ray" styling of the centre console.

On the outside another element comes into play - "Perfect Imbalance of Proportions". Large wheels are placed at the extreme corners of the vehicle to give a robust stance that belies the car's compact size.

True to J-factor aesthetic minimalism, Toyota iQ will be available from launch in three exterior colours: White Pearl Metallic, Black Metallic and Amethyst Metallic (more colours will be available later).

SIX INNOVATIONS PRODUCE A BREAKTHROUGH IN VEHICLE PACKAGING

Toyota iQ's remarkable interior volume is down to its comparatively long 2,000mm wheelbase and short overhangs - 530mm at the front and 455mm at the rear. Interior length from the rear end of the instrument panel to the hip point of the rear seats is an impressive 1,238mm. To achieve this breakthrough, six space-saving engineering innovations were developed.

Integrating the front-mounted differential in a conventional transmission layout allowed Toyota iQ to be built with an ultra-short front overhang. This reduced overall length while at the same time increasing the length of the passenger compartment. Ingeniously this not only reduces the amount of space required for the engine compartment, it also allows the large diameter front wheels to be positioned at the far corners of the vehicle. This shortens the overhangs, which in turn improves stability and manoeuvrability.

Employing centre take-off steering gear and placing it higher in the engine bay means the transmission, engine and differential could be repositioned. The engine compartment could then be made considerably smaller, further reducing the front overhang.

Traditionally fuel tanks are located underneath a car's rear seats. By making the tank flat, reducing it to just 120mm in height and solving the problems of rapidly changing fuel surface levels that such a design would normally create, the tank could be relocated under the floor. Toyota iQ's fuel tank has a 32-litre capacity, giving an ample driving range. Angling the rear shock absorbers backwards allows interior rear space to be increased.

The slimness of the seatbacks frees up an extra 40mm of rear passenger room at knee height. The seats weigh up to 30 per cent less than conventional ones, contributing to overall fuel efficiency and low emissions. Using extruded pipe materials rather than high tensile sheet steel ensures the structure is rigid. The slimmer designs, with integrated headrests, save space without sacrificing comfort or safety.

Reducing the size of the heater and air conditioning unit by 20 per cent compared to the Toyota Yaris allowed the engineers to make significant space savings without compromising performance. This means the blower unit, usually found in front of the front passenger, could be integrated with the main ventilation unit in a central position. This innovation allowed the front passenger area to be moved forward, freeing up cabin space and increasing leg room.

The innovative asymmetric dashboard was designed to open up the whole cabin area. It ensures ample leg room for the front passenger, even when the seat is in its furthest forward position. The sliding seat configuration allows an adult 190cm tall to sit comfortably in the rear seat behind a front passenger of the same height. Shoulder-to-shoulder distance between driver and front passenger is 50mm wider than in Yaris and bears comparison with a C-segment vehicle. The all-round space and seating layout means there is ample room for three adults plus either a child passenger or luggage behind the driver.

ENGINEERED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE

Toyota iQ represents the successful outcome of Toyota's well-established drive to reduce the environmental impact of its vehicles without compromising performance and driving dynamics. With CO2 emissions as low as 99g/km (with manual transmission), it is clearly a city car that's in the right place at the right time.

Its innovative, aerodynamic packaging has been achieved through a low overall height, low centre of gravity and wheels pushed out to the four corners of the car. This gives agility at low speed and unprecedented stability for a small car on motorways and winding roads. A minimum turning radius of 3.9 metres further enhances its nimble handling, even in tight city streets.

Toyota iQ is built on a new platform with MacPherson strut front suspension and a newly developed compact rear torsion beam. Together these provide dynamic handling with high degree of ride comfort. The suspension is fine tuned to let the car hug corners at speed, without losing stability.

Toyota iQ engines and transmissions have been developed under the Toyota Optimal Drive philosophy of delivering extremely low fuel consumption and emissions without compromising on power or driving pleasure.

At launch one engine will be available: a 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol unit with a choice of five-speed manual or a new Multidrive CVT system.

1.0-litre VVT-i engine

The 1.0-litre VVT-i petrol engine, winner of the 2008 Engine of the Year award in the sub-1.0-litre class, is a lightweight, three-cylinder unit, producing 67bhp (68 Din hp) at 6,000rpm and 91Nm of torque at 4,800rpm. Combined with a high-ratio five-speed manual transmission, it returns 65.7mpg in combined cycle driving and 99g/km of carbon dioxide (figures provisional prior to final homologation). This keeps Toyota iQ under the UK's 100g/km threshold for Vehicle Excise Duty, a benchmark that is also used for tax purposes in other major European markets, too. Specified with Multidrive transmission, the engine emits 110g/km of CO2 (provisional figure).

Multidrive transmission

Multidrive uses Toyota's latest continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology to give a very smooth shift feel while optimising the balance between performance and fuel economy. It continuously monitors and selects the most appropriate gear ratio and shifting speed, automatically eliminating "shift shock" or jumps while changing gear. It maximises engine torque without unnecessary acceleration and smoothes gear ratio changes, for example limiting uphill shifts and making downhill shifts to achieve optimum engine brake force. The system provides all the city-friendly characteristics of a conventional automatic gearbox.

Models equipped with Multidrive feature an ECO driving indicator lamp on the multi-information display. This encourages more economical driving by signalling when fuel is being saved and, consequently, emissions are reduced. Current and average fuel consumption are also permanently on display.

Gear shift indicator

Models with manual transmission are equipped with a gear shift indicator which shows the driver when to change up or down a gear to achieve the best environmental performance. The system takes driving conditions, accelerator pedal pressure and vehicle speed into account and can return fuel consumption savings of between 0.5 and three per cent compared to normal gear shifting, depending on individual driver habits.

Future developments

A new 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrol engine with Stop & Start technology will be available in Toyota iQ later in 2009. A 1.4 D-4D diesel will be offered from launch in some European markets, but is not scheduled for introduction in the UK.

Many of Toyota iQ's innovations will be adapted and evolved for future Toyota models. The car is a major milestone in Toyota's environmental commitment and efforts to develop technologies for much lower emissions. It is an essential part of Toyota's challenge to achieve the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association's (JAMA) voluntary commitment of 140g/km average fleet emissions by 2009.

OUTSTANDING ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY

Toyota iQ benefits from sophisticated active and passive safety technology to protect driver, passengers and pedestrians, with a range of breakthrough features rarely seen in small vehicles.

ABS integrated with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) is standard on all models. Steering assist Vehicle Stability Control (VSC+) combined with Traction Control (TRC) is also provided across the range and incorporates Electric Power Steering Control to minimise the risk of under- or oversteer.

The new braking system has 255mm front discs and 180mm drums. For collision safety and "braking feel", a link-type brake pedal is fitted.

The high strength body has a multi-load path structure to efficiently absorb and disperse impact forces. Designed by Toyota, it increases occupant protection in a frontal collision through six strategic elements to absorb and redistribute impact energy, including the suspension side rail and cross members, dashboard cross member, and front tyres located as far forward as possible.

The shape and height of the bonnet and a collapsible cowl construction are designed to deform in an impact to mitigate potential pedestrian injury.

All models are fitted with nine airbags. The passenger front airbag has a twin-chamber design with a lower pressure inflator to bridge the space between the passenger and the dashboard.

The driver has a knee airbag, which, because of the short steering column, can be positioned closer to the driver's knees, reducing deployment time and the amount of inflation required. On the front passenger side there is an innovative seat cushion airbag that works with the seatbelts to reduce and disperse force to the head, chest and upper body. This airbag is more effective in restraining hip movement than conventional knee airbags, given Toyota iQ's asymmetrical dashboard design.

Protection from side impacts is provided by two front side airbags, designed to restrain the chest and pelvis at the same time. Two side curtain shield airbags protect all four occupants from side impact to the head and neck.

Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts are fitted to all seats, with additional pretensioners and force-limiters for the driver and front passenger.

World-first rear window airbag

Toyota iQ marks a world-first breakthrough with a rear window curtain shield airbag. This deploys from the roof lining behind the rear headrests to protect occupants in a rear-end collision.

Isofix child seat anchors are fitted to the rear seats. A high tensile strength steel seat frame construction with integrated headrests provide driver and front passenger with collision safety and whiplash protection performance equal to Toyota's latest active headrest systems.

With its 360-degree safety approach, Toyota aims to fulfil Euro NCAP's five-star rating for occupant protection.

ASPIRATIONAL EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATION

In line with its innovative design and high quality finish, it will offer as standard a number of premium features for added style, comfort and convenience, setting it apart from more conventional and modestly specified models in the city car segment.

Two grades will be available - a standard trim and a premium upgrade version. Key features will include (according to grade) alloy wheels, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors with integrated turn indicators, automatic air conditioning, privacy glass, Smart Entry and Start system, dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming rear view mirror.
