At the core of this up-and-coming team is 2-time scoring champion, Kevin Durant. A 6’9” guard/forward with a soft shooting touch and tremendous explosiveness, Durant has established himself as one of the most dominant scorers in the league – winning back-to-back scoring titles.

Kevin Durant has consistently improved his offense through dedication, determination and drive. His desire to excel helped him lead the league in scoring twice, lead his team to its first conference finals and lead the USA Basketball Team to a gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championships.

During his recent visit here in the Manila for a 2-day all-star exhibition game, Durant attracted the attention of another leader – SMART Bro, the leading prepaid mobile broadband in the country. SMART Bro wasted no time getting Durant as an endorser for the brand because they share the same qualities that made them leaders – dedication, determination, and drive.

Just like KD, SMART Bro is dedicated to continuously explore latest advancements. It is determined to enhance its total mobile broadband infrastructures that will result to significant improvements to its product range and services. Smart Bro is likewise driven to give its subscribers nothing but the best. With dedicated, determined and driven leaders like Kevin Durant and SMART Bro coming together, it’s going to be a team that will be hard to beat.

Manila will be his first stop before moving on to Seoul and various cities in China.

“Nike is proud to bring Kobe Bryant back to Manila. In his last two visits, Kobe was able to connect with a lot of young Filipino athletes, encouraging them to fulfill their dreams through sport like he did,” said Nike Philippines Country Marketing Manager, Mae Dichupa. “As part of our commitment to basketball and young Filipino athletes, Nike continuously develops campaigns that will encourage them to reach for their sports dreams. Kobe’s visit is a testament to this. Though very brief, his one-day visit will definitely inspire Filipino athletes who look up to him.”

As early as three, Kobe Bryant already knew that he wanted to become a basketball player. He grew up continually honing his skills and practicing drills which helped in his rise as a basketball superstar. In 1996, he was drafted in the professional league and has since gotten five championship rings with his team, an MVP Award and received 4 All-Star MVP Awards. Kobe unabashedly seizes every opportunity to improve his game – and grabs every single reward that comes with them. Taking inspiration from Kobe’s passion and dedication, his tour is designed to lead young hoopsters down the path to greatness.

Kobe’s one-day visit will begin with a short show at Nike Park, The Fort at 3:00 PM. The main event will be at Araneta Coliseum at 5:00 PM featuring players from Nike-sponsored FEU Tamaraws, DLSU Green Archers, ADMU Blue Eagles and Smart Gilas Pilipinas. Kobe will teach these young athletes on how to better improve their skills for the coming basketball season.

Take every advantage and see Kobe live on July 13, 2011. Tickets will be distributed at Nike Park The Fort and Titan The Fort for one day only at 12NN on July 2, 2011. Tickets are free of charge and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Only two tickets will be given per person. Additionally, people can tune into Magic 89.9 and Wave 89.1 to win tickets to the show.

Fans can also like Facebook.com/Nikebasketball.phils where 50 lucky community members can get a chance to win 2 free tickets each to see the Black Mamba.

For tour updates, follow Nike on Twitter @NikePH

I went corporate (gasp!). And I’m doing that on top of my PBA / sportscasting, my writing (when I still can), my events hosting, and my charity work. And of course I have my family to keep happy and with my , we’re starting to be more active in our ministry too. So my apologies for the lack of entries. I had to make a lot of sacrifices, gave up a lot of things ("me" time for example and my regular bike rides) because of a choice I made.

Choices you make have consequences… ALWAYS.
There’s this story (or at least a version of the story) of a terrible choice made by a player whose very future is put in jeopardy.
He liked a girl, took her out, took things too far if you ask me.
No means no, didn’t you know?
At least that’s what she claims she says. (like I said this is one version)
The authorities are getting to the bottom of it.
So what’s a team to do? They’d rather not have distractions. Understandable.

Choices you make have consequences… ALWAYS.

Beyond what Charlie Sheen vehemently rants about, winning is all about conquering. It’s all about great results. It’s all about making a difference. That’s winning. It’s not just about the final score or whose opponent is down for the count. Winning is about triumph, and a lot of times it’s the triumph that’s experienced beyond the realm of the playing area is really what counts.

Last March 22, the Talk and Text Tropang Texters came in full force to support the first ever Philippines Walks for Water, an event championed by Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) which is owned by Manny Pangilinan’s MPIC and the Consunji’s DMCI. They were champions on the court, but displayed their winning characters by championing this cause for water for the poor.

It was to give a voice to the 16 million Filipinos who do not have access to water and it was to take the necessary steps to ensure that the government, private sector and civil society would be more conscientious on the many issues on water and its usage.

More than walking a 2kilometer stretch with over 2,000 government employees, students and volunteers, the Tropang Texters were among the 200 who carried 5gallon containers filled with water. Coach Chot Reyes, Coach Norman Black, Coach Mike Jarin, Coach Bong Ravena and Team Manager Aboy Castro brought the entire platoon.

Jimmy Alapag, Harvey Carey, Ryan Reyes, Larry Fonacier, Jason Castro, Kelly Williams, Jared Dillinger, Emerson Oreta, Mark Yee, Ali Peek, Ranidel de Ocampo, Rich Alvarez, Gilbert Lao were all in attendance and each carried heavy water jugs throughout the course plotted around the SM Mall of Asia.

More than the hardcourt heroes, the finest and up and coming Boxing stars came as a force as well. Coach Pat Gaspi and numerous other coaches along with Asian Games Gold Medalist Rey Saludar and plenty of other boxers made up ABAP’s huge contingent, led by its Executive Director and veteran sportscaster Ed Picson.

They all were thrilled to have been able participate in the event specially because the heavy water jugs they carried were immediately donated by Maynilad to needy families in Sitio Bakal Commonwealth. These athletes experienced what millions of Filipinos, mostly children go through daily – having to fetch water from a distant source for their daily use. Water flowing from faucets is a luxury most people take for granted while others treat it like gold.

There are so many other athletes that are using their influence and positive traits to be part of the change in this world full of harshness and desperation. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are some of the top tennis stars who will participate in a charity football match to raise money for earthquake and tsunami relief missions in Japan.

Vince Hizon was the first ever PBA player to set up a foundation while still active. He set up libraries and computer centers in schools of far flung or depressed municipalities around the country. Powerade’s Rob Reyes recently celebrated his 28th birthday with my foundation, the Everyday Is Your Birthday Foundation and brought happiness to the 25 boys from the Jesus Loves the Little Children Foundation in Pasig.
The PBA itself is a partner of the High Five Hope Foundation, an organization that gives needed and valuable sports programs for street kids of Metro Manila (Paranaque, Pasay, Marikina, Manila, Quezon City, etc) under the care of Childhope Asia, and Metro Cebu under the care of the Cebu City Task force of Councilor Margarita Osmena, wife of Congressman Tomas Osmena. High Five Hope has also received a big boost from Maynilad and Smart Sports who has been synonymous to helping athletes and uplifting Philippine Sports.

Their support will be instrumental in the staging of the project which aims to elevate the children’s self confidence, sense of teamwork, respect and accountability. It keeps them off the streets, off drugs and into better habits like healthy competition and working with others for a common goal.

The High Five Hope tournament in Manila kicks off tomorrow at the Rizal Coliseum where hundreds of their street kid beneficiaries participate in a volleyball clinic by the Women’s National team through the Philippine Volleyball Federation, led by Gener Dungo. They’ll also have a basketball clinic with some professional coaches and PBA players, and a soccer games with the Futkal association. Fil-am rapper Mike Swift and his crew will also be performing for the kids.

When an athlete laces up his shoes, or puts on his gloves to conquer his opponent, he becomes a winner. Gone are the days where it had a steady presence, producing some of the brightest hard court heroes that that went on to the professional ranks. The arrival of other leagues like Liga Filipinas and even its merger with the PBL last year created a wave of excitement, but that has dipped siginificantly.

With the emergence of another amateur league, excitement, along with hopes and dreams of young and promising stars are once again at a high. Through the efforts of the PBA, the Development League or D-league will be launched by March 12 at the San Juan Arena.
Unfortunately the PBL, which was also set for a comeback under the management of Nolan Bernardino, the son of the late PBA Commissioner Jun Bernardino, suffered a major drawback weeks before they were set to relaunch. Teams left the league and decided to join the D-League instead leaving the once top amateur league with not enough teams, and no other option but to fold.

Teams like Cobra Energy drink, Pharex, Ani-FCA and Café France have jumped ship.
The D-league will also have two teams under the Manny Pangilinan group - Metro Pacific Tollways and Maynilad. Powerade, apart from it’s team in the PBA will also set up a team in the D-league. Black Water/Ever Bilena, City of Antipolo, Handyfix/Max Bond, RnW Pacific Pipes and PC Gilmore are also confirmed to join.

According to its team manager Erico Lopez, the Maynilad banner will be carried by the NCAA champions San Beda Red Lions, making them strong finals contenders. Maynilad, now headed by Mr. Ricky Vargas who just celebrated his birthday yesterday, is a private firm managing the water distribution and wastewater services in the western zone of the Greater Metro Manila Area. Not to be confused with the eastern provider, Manila Water.

Each squad will have 14 players in their roster aged 17 to 26 years old. It will give these young hopefuls the opportunity to sharpen their skills plus gain confidence and experience. There is always a need for a mid-point between college ball and the pros to aide in the player’s transition. This will also be an opportunity for practice players to develop their skills since they get limited time in their mother club.

There is really a need for the pro league to expand, with the number of basketball talents this country produces. Having 10 teams, well 9 if you don’t count Gilas, only gives a small minority the opportunity to have basketball careers. Perhaps joining the D-league would be the chance for some companies to get their feet wet and get a feel of the benefits and the value of running a basketball team.

Good luck to the PBA and the D-League community!
Share your thoughts on www.patriciahizon.com or www.twitter.com/patriciahizon

GMA News TV had just been launched with a slew of wonderful shows that serve, inform, and entertain the viewing public. It’s an exciting new venture for the network giant which will be launched come February 28, replacing Qtv.

I was set to have a sports talk show there with Chino Trinidad called Game. We had a wonderful trade launch, talked to the potential sponsors, shared our excitement with all the great news anchors, reporters, TV hosts and talents. We shot the opening billboards, had a photo shoot for the materials, and came out in the papers already.

A few weeks ago though, Solar TV announced that they would now air the PBA on Studio 23 as block timers because they were to revamp their programming and didn’t have room for the PBA and the NBA.

I’ve been with the PBA for 8 years now, as a courtside reporter and as the first and only female anchor. I’ve always been proud of that achievement but I know I still have much to accomplish and to improve on. Needless to say, I’m very passionate about the PBA and of course that career that I’ve been so blessed with.

When GMA learned of Solar’s move, my producers talked to me. Basically, I had to choose between doing my show on GMA or being with the PBA because it’s on Studio23, an ABS CBN Channel. Caught in the middle of this network war, I had to make a choice. For GMA, I can appear on any channel except an ABS CBN channel, which is absolutely understandable. I respect that.

Working for GMA would’ve certainly been an honor. The production team behind the show are absolutely brilliant and dedicated. Working with Chino would’ve been exciting. But my choice is to stay with the PBA. They respect that.

I have to admit that it wasn’t very easy when I was weighing out my options. I consulted some people, my husband being on top of the list of course, and they all came up with varying responses. Some thought I was better off with GMA, others thought otherwise. I prayed long and hard and listened intently for what God wanted me to do.

For Game, and for GMA News TV, I can only wish them the very best. It’s definitely a news channel that will elevate the consciousness of the Filipino. Bravo!

As for the PBA, today’s the day they debut on Studio 23, still produced by Solar TV, keeping the same great on cam talents and hard working and very creative production team.

The quest for the Commissioner’s Cup begins at 5pm, live from the Centennial Arena in Laoag City where the new and improved Meralco Bolts test their mettle against the forever fan favourites Bgy. Ginebra Kings.

If you’re reading this at 10 in the morning, at this time, I’m strapped on my seat inside the PLDT private plane, hitching a ride to Laoag, grateful that I get to anchor the 1st game of the new conference with one of the people that I truly admire in the industry, Quinito Henson.

There was some who even assumed that Studio 23, under ABS CBN will take over the PBA coverage. Yesterday it was finally made clear. Solar TV will still continue producing the PBA games and will only buy air time from Studio 23.

Solar’s head of PR Tek Major shares “We are happy to announce that SolarTV has entered into a blocktime agreement with Studio 23 for the free TV telecast of the PBA games for the 2nd and 3rd conferences this year.”

There were concerns about Studio 23 being a UHF channel which was a concern of the PBA Board, but after evaluating it, they were convinced that Studio 23 has the technical capabilities. It was pointed out that UHF and VHF channels are not much different in terms of strength nowadays.

Because Solar TV is reformatting the shows they air on RPN 9, the sports shows were no longer a fit in their programming. “But this is something we shared with the PBA a year ago. It wasn’t sudden”, clarifies Major.

Their other sports programs like the NBA which on certain days airs on RPN 9 could also be moved to another free TV partner. Ms. Major still does not say with finality if they’re getting airtime with another network or if it will also be on Studio 23. “We’re working on airing the NBA on a block time basis. But right now it’s just one of the options due to the reformatting.”

Solar TV’s CEO Peter Chanliong assures that they will continue to give their full support to make these next 2 conferences “better than ever”. And that is a challenge for the production team.

A number of the behind the scene people have been jumping form one network to another, whoever is covering the PBA, that’s who they work for. Their experience is what lands them the job with whoever is the TV coveror.

It takes a special breed of production personnel to cover the PBA games. More than the deep knowledge and understanding of the game, technical know-how, the creativity, and the commitment, it takes a lot of passion, and an amount of trust with the PBA community and the personalities which they’ve built.

It’s hard to get some players to do a scripted line during a shoot if he’s not comfortable with you. The coaches wouldn’t always allow you to go inside the locker room, or pester him during the game if he wasn’t familiar with you. You won’t be privy to some inside information if you don’t know the ins and outs.

The challenge now is for the production team to make the most out of the next two conferences and make it even better. Not just for Solar TV’s sake but also for their own. Their future depends on it. And this goes to the on-cam talents as well.

www.twitter.com/patriciahizon has the lowdown. Yes, mankind has even come up with shoes that are not really shoes that makes you feel like you’re not wearing shoes at all. Go figure.

But the average Joe does not spend that much time on their feet doing physically taxing activities. Most of the time, we’re all just walking from point A to point B.
Studies have shown that the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day, or an average of 4.5 kilometers, depending on your line of work or your lifestyle. One can walk 185,000 kilometers in a lifetime, which is like walking the circumference of the earth about four and a half times!

Even an office worker takes an average of 1,600 steps per day, unless they’re tasked to do a lot of walking. No matter how you look at it, you’re on your feet walking most part of the day.

With all that said, it’s incumbent to get a pair of shoes, specially for the corporate working class, that will give you better walkability without looking like it’s off the off the athletic shoe rack.

Rockport, the leading brand within the Adidas Group corporate portfolio, and one of the most recognized footwear brands in the United States, has come up with a line of dress and casual shoes for men and women designed with walkability in mind. Fashionable styles and all day engineered comfort are the foremost attributes of their collection, perfect for work and even leisure, day to night.

That’s the truWALK architecture and philosophy behind Rockport’s latest line.

Through physiological research and findings of their biomechanical scientists, decades were spent on developing a proprietary architecture for their shoes that works with the foot's natural motion, resulting in a more comfortable, energized stride.

Focusing on three basic elements; strike, roll and flex, the truWALK architecture uses adiPRENE technology by Adidas that enables a soft heel-strike, followed by a transition to a smooth roll through the arch, then a forefoot flex for an energized push-off that helps delay fatigue over longer walks.

So with comfort and design merged in a shoe, you sure can walk it out, without sacrificing style!

truWALK footwear is available at Rockport Trinoma, Glorietta, Festival Mall, Ermita, Manila, Southmall, Shangri-La, Galleria, Podium and Ayala Center Cebu.

A drunk driver went the wrong way and crashed into his brother Raymond’s car. He perished alongside his girlfriend. The driver is in a coma.

(Do not ever drink and drive. It’s not just about you. It’s also about the other people you place in imminent danger.)

It was absolutely astonishing to have Ryan go on that flight to Bacolod the day after, and it was mind-blowing to have him practice well and play game 1 of the finals with so much grit and determination. Coach Chot believed that Ryan needed basketball. “I don’t know if it’s a conscious effort on his part but I would l think that basketball is his solace or sanctuary that he’s using to deal with it.”

The whole team was very respectful of Ryan’s situation. They made sure that he knew that they were all there for him, feeling his loss and supporting him no matter what. “We are amazed that he is here. The fact that Ryan wants to be here and play in these finals is something we have to respect and rally behind.

Game 1’s victory in Victorias saw Ryan churn up 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He showed what he was made of.

Game 2 came and Ryan was still on the court, fighting alongside his teammates. The warrior had a lot of fight in him, contributing 7 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.

Talk and Text again emerged victorious against a ferocious Beermen squad. Good thing the game didn’t go into overtime.

Before the Cuneta Astrodome’s stands were clear of its spectators, Ryan was already out the door, rushing to catch his flight to California to attend his brother’s burial.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there were powers that be that made sure he’d make that flight. In a post game interview Coach Chot said “It was very important for us to win this game because we don’t have Ryan in our next game”. Ryan is expected to be back by Game 4. If all goes well for the team, they could be All Filipino Champions by Sunday night.

Share your thoughts on www.twitter.com/patriciahizon.

The PBA Philippine Cup finals is set to begin tomorrow in Victorias City, and with both teams so evenly matched in this clash of the titans, it’s hard to predict who’ll emerge victorious.

In an interview, Washington admits that he’s bitter. “It’s all about the way I was handled at TNT, under Coach Chot. At the end of Coach Chot’s first year in TNT, I was traded to San Miguel. For me, I felt it was more of a personal reason that I was being traded and I felt it was a personal attack. I felt that Chot didn’t like me.”

He went on and shared that he had a hard time dealing with the management while he was living and dying for the team. He was the number one draft pick in his batch but he got injured right away. As he tried to find his way back in the regular rotation, the relationship he had with the higher ups seemed “distant”.

Washington thought of taking a year off from the PBA to let his residency pass so that he’d just end up being a free agent, but as luck would have it, he got traded to San Miguel.

But here’s the other side of the story form a TNT insider who refuses to be named but is a very reliable source. “Jwash was sent out of TNT for 2 reasons. 1) Chot didn’t like him, and 2) he was asking for P500,000 per month on his first year then P700,000 per month on his second year and P900,000 per month on his third year. Now who in this stupid world will give him that contract when he was averaging 6 points and 7 rebounds per game”.

This is not saying that Washington has that kind of contract with San Miguel now. But he sure is making every bit of peso they invest on him worth it. He’s one of the top contenders for the Best Player of the Conference and he’s determined to bring SMB’s opponents down.

There were 3 referees that were reprimanded recently not because they erred in working one game (Talk and Text vs. Bmeg Semifinals game) as was incorrectly reported, but because they failed to meet the stringent standards of the PBA. They were suspended from the pool.

At the start of the season, there were 20 referees working the games. During the playoffs, only 12 made the grade but there were the three that were taken out based on their performance. Come finals, only 7 or 8 at most will be left in the pool. This means, they will only use the best game officials to work the finals.

Talking to Coach Ryan Gregorio while we were shooting the cover of next month’s Baller Magazine, the official lifestyle magazine of the PBA, he said a good referee is one that does not feel he’s larger than the players. “They should know the rules and apply it with parity. They should be able to be good communicators inside the court because they’re not just officials, they’re supposed to be teachers of the game, making us understand the kind of calls they do”.

What he detests is once you complain to the referees, they automatically issue you a warning. “That only means they’re using that whistle as a tool of superiority”.

The referees that have been reprimanded may still return next conference. They will go through a series of training to elevate their sub-performing ways. This way, there’s quality control.

The league is also initiating a referees’ academy where they get to train potential game officials. The application forms are available at the PBA office and registration is up until January 31.

The Condura Skyway Marathon will be staged on February 6, Sunday and registration is currently ongoing and are being filled up fast! A true testament to how successful this event has been since its inception in 2008.

They’re introducing the 10 mile (or 16 km) category this year, and for the first time, runners for this and the 10k distances, will have the experience of running through the Skyway, as part of their Ayala Avenue to the Bonifacio Global City race route. Also starting off in Ayala is the 21k half marathon race.

The mother of all, 42k marathon will begin and end at the Bonifacio Global City, where the shorter distances of 3k and 5k will be centralized.

Another exciting innovation the organizers is the use of the D-Tag Timing System for all the runners which is used in the New York Marathon and other big international running events. This will ensure a faster and more accurate recording of finishing times.

And once you finish and have had your Team Manila-designed dri-fit type technical t-shirt soaked in sweat and glory of the race, whether you ran for fun or were a ultra serious marathoner, you will get a medal to remember your conquest by.

Every year, the Condura race raises funds for marine environmental causes. In 2008, they raised funds for the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tubbataha Reef and helped its rangers purchase equipment to help protect the land from poachers. Then the year after, they teamed with the ABS CBN Foundation to help fund the building of the Girawan Tourism center, which was a hub in Donsol, Sorsogon for whale shark watching.

The Condura Wharf in Baclayon, Bohol was built through the project of the Ayala Foundation from the funds raised from the 2010 edition of the race. It has helped the dolphin watching industry in the area, therefore educating more of the locals on the frailty of these sea creatures.

Helping the dolphins will still be the mission this 2011 but they’ll be focusing now more on the scientific research which will be used to help create sustainable internationally accepted programs and policies on dolphin watching in Bohol.

They have set up a very easy and convenient e-registration system where you can sign up for the race from any computer which ends on January 31. Their website, www.conduraskywaymarathon.com has all the information you need. Cash or credit card mode of payments are accepted.

By 2012, the Condura Skyway Marathon race will be one of the premier marathon events in the Asia-Pacific region. This is another opportunity to put the Philippines in the map of outdoor sporting events. This year, they expect about 15,000 runners to join and the numbers have been growing yearly. Best of luck to the organizers.

Want to run with me? RETIRE PACQUIAO.
Gasp! This will have people disagree violently but I do think Manny Pacquiao should retire already. Is the May 7 fight against Shane Mosley even worth it? I say quit while you're ahead. He's got enough money till yin yang and all he's got to do is manage his finances well and there'll be enough to last 2 generations. I love PacMan! But reality is, a boxer is always just a hard-hitting punch away from some debilitating brain injury.

2. FIELD OF DREAMS
I hear there are a dew sports complexes being built by some cities. I heard about the Taytay sports complex that's supposed to have a soccer field. Budgetary cuts though could have them scrap the pitch. I wish the national government could allot money to build this complex the way it was planned to be. I know it isn't that simple but we have to find a place that's not so far from the urban setting so that the you get generation around manila can learn to play football. Even get some grass roots programs could flourish from having a pitch near Manila. With the inspiration the Azkals gave, we can build easily a generation of football players.

3. PHYS ED
The government is doing the best they could to have students get into as much sports as possible. But if you compare the Philippines to other countries, we're behind in terms of implementing sports programs to the youth. China's gymnasts start at toddler age. Canada has intense hockey classes even in the first years in the grade school level.

There are many things you can think of I'm sure. For 2011, we all have to do our part to help the sports landscape shift for the better. What would you like to see different?

Tweet @patriciahizon and let's print it for next week!

Therefore here's a list of things that would be nice to give to these sports personalities and entities.

Comm. Chito Salud - he seems to be a man of integrity and a good judge of character. He's got a clear vision of the league and he's taking it to the right direction. But what he needs is a marketing director who can help realize his goals. It's been a vacant position for quite some time already. They need someone who can help the league strengthen it's relationship with the fans, win back old ones, and woo new ones.

Solar TV - a broadcast partner would be nice! They say they are repositioning Solar TV and will soon focus on their female audience so they need to find a network that can carry the PBA broadcast till the end of their contract. For the next 2 conferences, there's a chance Solar could possibly tie up with IBC13 or PTV4, of course there are other networks but it's unlikely they can accommodate 5 hours of prime time programming 3-4 times a week. This is all just hearsay. Solar has not announced any concrete plans yet.

Dan Palami - I'd give him an Executive of the Year award. What he did for the Azkals and how he steered them to being one of the Top Dogs in the ASEAN Football federation was absolutely brilliant. He did it his way - the professional way.

Azkals - these guys deserve to get a Godfather! Sponsors are investing, but should a "godfather" come in, it ensures continuous support for the squad. We've seen what they can do, and they're well worth all the attention.

Manny V. Pangilinan - the Metro Manila Filmfest Award for best film would be awesome. He produced the movie Rosario, based on the story of his grandmother, played by Jennelyn Mercado. Directed by the talented Albert Martinez, it seems like this is the most intriguing and perhaps the lost captivating film in this year's roster. Hope they select a quality film worthy of international praise.

Smart Gilas - if only I could wrap that Olympic qualifier ticket and hand it to them, I would! London 2012 will hopefully be a reality.

Marcus Douthit - he's just a signature away from being a naturalized Filipino. I'd sign it but I'm not the President of the Republic of the Philippines! (Dear P-Noy)

Barako Bull - I'd get them water! Manila water! They seriously need it.

Manny Pacquiao - I'd hand him Floyd Mayweather JR. The world has been craving for this fight to happen but we all know Mayweather's afraid of Pacman. Which reminds me, Mauweather should get balls for Christmas.

What would you give to a sports personality and why? Hats off to the team that put this together. The PBA after all is about fans.

I say if the person is good enough, have them trained and perhaps make them a courtisde fixture. We sure could use an extra man or woman on the ball. Maybe even a person who can go to the stands and interview the spectators. It'd be awesome.

I've seen the videos of the finalists and I've cast my vote. Good luck! May the best person win this unique opportunity!

He’s prodigious on and off the pitch.

“In my 22 years I feel like I’ve been through a lot and I have so many stories to tell specially in football. As I kid I wanted to grow up as the best football player in the world that’s still my goal. But being in the Philippines gives me more determination to make football succeed.”

Phil has faith that football will someday draw as many disciples as basketball within his lifetime. It’s that same belief that has driven him to settle back here and set up shop. It’s a leap, and he’s taken it without any hesitation. “It’s because I feel Filipinos can succeed in this sport. You don’t need to be 6’6” or 6’10” to be a football player. The best football players in the world are 5’6, 5’7 so it’s all about skill and hard work, something all Filipinos have. The great thing about football is it has everything - it has drama, it has action. And you can go from being a zero to hero or vice versa.”

He talked about the need to set up a professional league as the base for the sport’s growth. “People are working hard to create this. In the provinces it’s very popular so you have lots of players who do play because there’s available fields, whereas in Metro Manila there’s not enough room. I think a pro league needs to be set up then eventually, our country can be represented and hopefully gain international success”.

So what’s the biggest hindrance? Phil believes it’s money. “If you put all the money into football, people will play football. But the money right now is into basketball and it’s the most marketable sport in the Philippines.” And he vows that till he sees progress, he won’t give up. “You need someone to invest and to believe that there is a future in it”.

The Younghusbands certainly are using their own marketability to draw attention to football. And why not? “We’re not ugly people and we are very marketable… Not saying we’re good looking we just have good family genes.”

Phil and his brother James, who is just 11 months older than him, have elevated the status of the sport in our country with their success playing for the prestigious Chelsea Football Club. His training with Chelsea put him under the wings of some of the best Premiere League coaches like Claudio Ranieri and Gianfranco Zola to name a few. During his stint with the Youth Team, Phil in fact was the top scorer back in the 2003 season which got him a deal to play for the First Team in the pre-season and the Chelsea Reserves for a year. After which, he came to the Philippines and helped the National Team during the ‘05 SEA Games held here and the ASEAN Championships in ‘07.

“I think with that success you do become idols and you do have people looking up to you because they want to do what you have done, imitate how successful you are and go even further. In terms of football, we are probably one of the most successful, with Filipino blood, in the Philippines. So I think with that, comes people idolizing you”.

Does he see himself as the David Beckham of the Philippines? “I can’t say I’m anything like David Beckham because of the things he’s done. He’s a legend in England and a legend around the world.”

But he does want to emulate the Becks effect. “He attracts people who eventually become football fans and that’s what I wanted to do . Use the showbiz and the modelling side so people who aren’t interested in football become more interested in football. If they come to games, just to watch me take my shirt off or my brother, or anyone, if that’s an excuse for them to come and watch football then so be it.

But once they start watching football they’ll realize it’s a great game for Filipinos. If that’s what it takes then I’ll do it. Anything to promote football.”
“My priority is to promote the sport so right now I’ve got the Younghusband academy along with the MPLFA football association where we go around as football disciples, spreading the word, giving talks. We’re doing it because we love football and we want it to succeed. And we want Filipinos to succeed. Look at Japan 20 years ago they were a baseball country and now they’re a football country. And before basketball came into the Philippines, it was football because of the Spanish influence. But because the Americans came over, they influenced us to be a basketball country. Hopefully we can revert to that.” He dreams of training a young team now, and get a shot at the world cup in 2018.

Another mission Phil, and James are adamant about is the 1GOAL project which they are the ambassadors for in the Philippines. It’s a global signature campaign that aims to make education a priority and help some 72 million children including 6 million from the Philippines to complete their primary schooling. They need 30 million supporters by end of August to show to the UN heads of State in September. (you can support by visiting www.vsobahaginan.org.ph/ 1goal)

Well FIFA picked the perfect ambassadors because the Younghusbands cherish and value their education. “My mom and dad always made sure that academics was always as important as football. If I ever got injured If I ever was not good enough, I’d have something to fall back on. And they made sure I always studied and that’s helped me.” Phil majored in Major Math Mechanics Salesians School in London where he was an “Advanced Level” scholar. Characters that will drive any great competitor to eradicate anything that gets in the way of them and victory. Sometimes, the desire to succeed compels them to challenge those who they feel do not share the same vision. And that is all because they know what it takes to come out on top.

Weeks ago, Sol Mercado was benched for the 2nd half during the Rain or Shine game against Ginebra. Trying to get into the groove in the first half, the Elastopainters played catchup to the Gin Kings and put up a decent fight and were only down by 6 points at halftime. It was Coach Caloy Garcia’s prerogative to do what he feels is best with his team. He is after all the coach. Mercado watched the game slip away from the bench. Confused. Frustrated. They lost 90-73.

After the game, when all the players already left, Mercado confronted his coach and questioned his decision to keep him on the bench. Mercado knows what he could’ve done to help the team. The argument was heated to say the least. Words were said and threats were made. It got ugly. It was a verbal smackdown.

The team owners had to intervene specially because both parties were ready to leave the team and throw it all away. The solution came about over lunch as both sides were heard. Both just didn’t see that they wanted the same thing – win.

Ceasefire came. The result was a 98-86 drubbing of Barako with Sol Mercado top scoring with 21 points, and a 110-107 slaying of the giants, the San Miguel Beermen with Mercado putting up 26 points (which included a 6 of 12 three point shooting binge) and 8 assists! It was his best in the conference! He became the unanimous choice as the PBA Press Corps Player of the week.

Sol never came out and said anything about the altercation or what had happened afterwards. He let his game do the talking instead. He showed that all he really wanted was to win and that he could really help the team.

He’s currently on leave for the next couple of weeks from the PBA to be with the Smart Gilas squad in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou China. It’s his first stint wearing the national colors, a feat he truly is proud of. Along with Chris Lutz, he was a last minute addition to the official lineup that had just been approved a day before they were set to leave for their tune up games against two CBA teams in Guangdong.
He’s excited to be playing under Coach Rajko Toroman whom he easily adjusted to.

Already Mercado is equipping himself with Coach Toroman’s plays and coaching styles so when the time comes, he too can pass it on the teams he would coach in the distant future.

For updates on Sol Mercado, follow @SM3rc3 or @patriciahizon on twitter.
