Cobalto and Zafiro are two futuristic concept devices that have been designed by getting inspired from Sci-Fi movies like “Minority Report”. Cobalto, the glass screen of this mobile phone concept has been envisioned to be able to produce 3D objects in the air which is really exciting. The device features deformable metal which will allow the user to function either on traditional number buttons or a dial like iPod.

Zafiro is conceptual desktop PC with really stylish and innovative appearance, it resembles a lot with the hand or body gestures of Tom Cruise in the movie. The Zafiro concept also comprises the deformable metal of Cobalto which allows the keyboard to get flattened when idle.

Using Recycled Materials, Nokia Remade Concept Phone

Green design from Nokia, this concept phone is almost entirely made of recycled materials, aluminum cans, old plastic bottles and car tyres for the rubber keys. The first prototype showed at Mobile World Congress show in Barcelone by Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. Although it is clearly that the inside chipset and electronics won’t be made from old tin cans, at least this ‘Remade’ Nokiaconcept phone will consume less natural resources and more energy efficient by cutting the power used to back-light the screen.

Too bad that this phone is just a concept phone, hopefully we can see this green mobiles in the market soon.

Rather, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's executive vice-president for markets, calls the 5800 a "youth-oriented multimedia product made very affordable to the target audience of heavy music consumers."

Maybe a better description of the 5800 would be iPhone triangulator. No, the handset launched on Oct. 2 in London is not aimed directly at the hard-core iPhone crowd. But the 5800 does indicate how Nokia hopes to ensure that Apple remains a niche player in the global handset market. Nokia will try to smother Apple and other rivals with a range of touch products, aiming to peel away different target groups.

And Nokia will launch the products simultaneously around the world, exploiting a distribution system that neither Apple nor any other competitor can match. The 5800 can handle 60 different languages covering 90% of humanity and will be in shops all over the globe, including the U.S., before the end of the year, Nokia says.
Musical Bonus

As Vanjoki points out, the 5800 is designed for young folks whose lives revolve around music. The $407 price tag, before taxes and subsidies, is more than a third below that of an unsubsidized iPhone. And the 5800 will be available from a range of telcos, in contrast to the iPhone, which is officially available only from select providers such as O2 (TEF) in Britain or T-Mobile (DT) in Germany.

Perhaps the most important feature of the 5800, though, isn't hardware but the built-in music collection. Beginning next year, the phone will feature Nokia's Comes With Music service—a year's worth of downloads from a catalog that includes all four major labels and 4 million songs (BusinessWeek.com, 9/2/08). It may be the music, more than the device, that's really aimed at Apple. Anyone who buys a 5800, with a massive selection of music embedded in the price, is unlikely to pay for the same music on iTunes.

So how does the 5800 compare with the iPhone? It's more sophisticated in some ways, less so in others. The more compact 5800 has a one-finger touch screen, in contrast to the iPhone, whose surface can handle input from two fingers simultaneously. The iPhone's two-finger interface lets users do cool things, such as easily shrink or expand images on the screen. On the other hand, the 5800, unlike the iPhone, has a screen that vibrates ever so gently when you touch it, providing subtle confirmation that the device is responding to your command.
Sophisticated Insides

The 5800's inner workings also are more advanced. (Saying such things always generates hate mail from iPhone fans.) It's a fact that Nokia has much more experience than Apple—or anybody else, for that matter—in packing an astonishing number of radios and other electronics into a small package and making everything work reliably.

The 5800 has a better camera, including a Carl Zeiss lens. Its Internet browser can handle Flash files, which the iPhone can't. And it has built-in GPS navigation (as do the newest iPhones). Since Nokia hasn't yet released test versions of the 5800, it's impossible to say which is better. But given how much effort Nokia has put into navigation (it's already the world's largest maker of GPS devices), it will be a surprise if the new phone doesn't turn out to be more precise and better at snagging a satellite signal than the iPhone. Nokia will include an introductory subscription to voice navigation in the price. "It's increasingly about the combination of services that come with the product," Vanjoki says.

The 5800 should be seen as Nokia's first attack on the touch screen phone market. A real challenger to iPhone will come some time in the next few months, when the Finns unveil an Nseries device with a touch screen. The top-of-the-line Nseries handsets are the ones that most appeal to the same tech connoisseurs who have made the iPhone such a phenomenon. Vanjoki might let you get away with calling that product an iPhone killer.

IBM Debuts Food Traceability iPhone App

Today at the IBM Information on Demand event, IBM will demo a new app that will bring the Internet of Things to the iPhone. The as yet unreleased iPhone app is called Breadcrumbs and it will give consumers access to information about grocery food items. The app will be able to scan barcodes and deliver a summary of the ingredients in a food item, along with when it was manufactured. That data is usually on the food label, but Breadcrumbs goes a step further - it can provide extra information such as product recall data. If a product has been recalled in the past, this app will tell the consumer all of the relevant details.

Breadcrumbs is able to scan barcodes using the iPhone's camera. The consumer simply points their iPhone at a food item and gets back relevant data. Other than product recall details, the information returned to the user is mostly the same as what's on food labels - only it is pulled from the Web.

IBM told ReadWriteWeb that when 4G becomes common place in mobile phones, then apps such as Breadcrumbs will become more powerful and be readily used on-the-fly by consumers when grocery shopping.

The larger trend here is the convergence of smart phones with the Internet of Things(i.e. Internet-connected real world objects). Devices such as the iPhone essentially become sensor and RFID readers, which allow consumers to interact with real world objects in a much more detailed manner.

Breadcrumbs is a glimpse of what we'll see in the near future, when information will literally -finally - be at the consumer's fingertips when they're shopping for groceries or any other goods where data is plentiful. Up till now, data such as product recall information has largely been inaccessible to consumers - at least when at the grocery store.

In the long term expect to see apps like Breadcrumbs provide data on where and when food items get consumed, together with how long they were on the shelf before being consumed. Apps like Breadcrumbs may even be able to tell who consumed the items (privacy advocates, start your engines!). These apps will also be useful in determining counterfeit items, for example when buying an expensive luxury good.

The date that Breadcrumbs will be launched on iPhone has not yet been announced by IBM.

OK, here we go again. Decades ago, there was a widespread panic about the possibility that the airlines high voltage can be a cause of cancer for people living near or below them. When this was refused, the crowd Doomsday released on cell phones as a possible risk of brain cancer due to the small amount of radiation emitted when the phone is transferring data. Until now, after dozens of studies, no conclusive evidence that cell phones produce a significant amount of radiation to create a measurable increase in cancer risk. But it is a cause for concern? Just who made these tests?
A new joint study by the University of California at Berkeley, and several universities in Korea, reviewed 465 articles published in leading magazines and 23 large-scale studies of cases of more than 37,916 patients. The study group included patients with and without brain tumors. They found that when they look at the whole group, there was no association between brain tumors and use of cell phones. When they looked closer, however, divided the large group into subgroups clinically significant, there was a significant increase in risk of cancer by up to 30%. Furthermore, they noted that some previous studies that showed results of "zero risk", were actually funded by handset manufacturers.
Other experts, including neurosurgeons have long agreed that cell phones can cause brain tumors. A doctor, for example, Vini Khurana, also said he thought that mobile phones can be more dangerous than smoking or asbestos. He said there are other 3 billion mobile users around the world, which is huge to 3 times the number of smokers worldwide, and tobacco use causes 5 million deaths per year.
The groups continue to insist, however, that there is a concrete set of risk. They just mention that in the paper after peer review, there is an overwhelming consensus that wireless phones do not pose a risk to public health. His claims are also supported by the FDA, the FCC, the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute and the World Health Organization. Imagine, all groups of private security and the federal government agreed on one thing!
