The answer to this simple question is equally simple. A yearly physical or health maintenance exam as they're more frequently called now is designed to do exactly that, maintain your health. While most people come in for sick visits, doctors also need to see you once a year when you're well! Sometimes we hear, "I'm young and healthy, I don't need one." Whether you're 2 or 102 or anywhere in between you should have a yearly well visit because there are measures you can take to stay young and healthy! It's a good time for us to review your medications, allergies and any changes to your or your family's health. This also gives us time to review your immunization status (immunizations aren't just for kids anymore) and any other preventative health screening that needs to be done (cholesterol and other labs, mammogram, pap smear, prostate exam to name a few). This is also a good time for you to ask any questions you have about your health! So if it's been a year or more since your last physical, call for an appointment today, your health is important to us!

This helps in many ways: 1. If your new to the doctor, he/she can quickly copy it for your new chart and saves time for everyone. 2. If you're in the ER, it will help them see what illnesses you may have. This is especially helpful if you've been an accident and are unable to communicate. 3. If you're seeing your doctor for a routine visit, it helps him/her make sure you're taking them the correct way and if there needs to be any dosage changes. So you can see how this simple measure helps us help you! One good place you can do this is on google health (health.google.com). Along with a medication list, you can also enter allergies, procedures you've had done and much more! You can print it out and now you have a portable medical record to take with you!

The truth is that, while vaccination(s) are important, travelers will gain the most from the pre-travel consultation because there are many health risks they will encounter in their journeys that have no vaccines. I discuss topics such as food borne illness, altitude illness, jet lag, safety and security abroad and many more so even if no vaccinations are required for your trip abroad, you should still schedule an appointment with me at least 8 weeks before you leave so I can inform you of these risks and help you prevent them! This way you can enjoy the sights without the burden of illness to slow you down! Schedule your appointment today! 248-628-3000 and ask for Kallie she'll be happy to assist you!

In a small bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs, oats and brown sugar. Wash and peel apples. Quarter them; cut out core and seeds. Slice apple quarters. Spread apples in a 12 x 8 inch baking pan. Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan. Sprinkle cinnamon and topping mixture over apples. Dot with butter. Bake for about 45 minutes or until apples are soft and topping is browned.

Makes 6 servings. Each contains about 134 calories, 1 gram protein, 3 grams fat, no cholesterol, 28 grams carbohydrates, 3 grams fiber and 44 milligrams sodium. For more crunch, add 1/3 cup walnuts, which adds 38 calories, 1 gram protein, 4 grams fat, 1 gram carbohydrate and no cholesterol, fiber or sodium to each serving!

Bon appetit and enjoy this health treat!

I am a board certified internal medicine physician in Michigan. I am doing this as a way to reach patients and the population in general. I am a firm believer in prevention whether it's illness or injury. Half the battle in prevention is having the knowledge. So I hope I impart a little bit of my knowledge to you so that you may live happy, healthy lives. Feel free to comment on my posts or ask questions...I promise I'll get to them as soon as possible.
