PeacePlayers-Cyprus is hosting its first Movie Night Fundraiser. With support from the Artos Foundation and the Austrian Embassy, PPI-CY will by holding a special screening of the movie Mount St. Elias, a dramatic and awe-inspiring feature documentary following three of the world’s greatest ski mountaineers to Mount St. Elias in their attempt to realize the longest ski descent of the world. The event begins at 9:00pm with a short film about PeacePlayers followed by the feature film. Viewers will be asked to make a 5 euro donation to PeacePlayers-Cyprus at the door. A comedy/drama/(romantic?) movie rated 7.7/10 in IMDb website. I have seen it tonight and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I highly recommend it!

The story goes like this:

The story is about a lesbian married couple (Nic and Jules) with kids.

Nic, a physician, needs to wield what she believes is control, whereas Jules, under that control, is less self-assured. During their relationship, Jules has floundered in her "nine to five" life, sometimes trying to start a business - always unsuccessfully - or being the stay at home mom.

They have two teen-aged children, Joni and Laser, Nic who is Joni's biological mother, and Jules who is Laser's biological mother. Although not exact replicas, each offspring does more closely resemble his/her biological mother in temperament. Joni and Laser are also half-siblings, having the same (not for long) unknown sperm donor father.

Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, language and some teen drug and alcohol use.

Plato's academy is a greek production related to xenophobia, the theme of this month.
There is a showing at cinestudio (Nicosia) on Thursday 14/01/2010.
Kafentzopoulos won an award for his performance and although I haven't seen it I recommend it since I read some good reviews for it.

It's about a middle-aged greek shop owner who is vividly xenophobic and even racist before he comes to realise that he actually comes from Albania.

If someone does go could you please give us some feedback?

It so happened to see this short length movie online and wanted to share it with you. It describes the life and the role of the coffee shop (kafenes, kahvehane) in particular, before 1974 at the villages of Cyprus, in parallel with the intercommunal conflict.

What I liked most in the video is that you cannot really say whether the actors are TCs or GCs. Also I was wondering whether there is anyone who can identify the village. My initial guess is that it is one located in the Karpasia peninsula (if it is in the northern Cyprus). Does anyone know?

6th International Children's Film Festival of Cyprus

The annual International Children's Film Festival of Cyprus (ICFFCY) is a major event on the calendars of cinema-lovers across the island which has received considerable recognition for its educational contributions to Cyprus. The 2009 ICFFCY opens its doors for its sixth consecutive year on November 14th and will run its marathon screenings and workshops until November 22nd at Pantheon Art Cinema.

35 high quality movies will be screened; movies that will cover a broad range of youth related themes. Both classic and contemporary movies will be screened, including animationsand documentaries, which are dedicated to the rights of children and to themes such as tradition, society, and anything that contributes to nurturing the hearts and minds of future adults.

Marathon screenings will signal the start of the festival on Saturday, November 14th and Sunday, November 15th, between 11am and midnight. From Monday the 16th of November, morning screenings will commence for schools, and evening screenings at 7pm and 9pm that will be open to all. Some of the movies that will be screened include: 'The Bogeyman', 'Women of Cyprus', 'Color Purple', the documentary 'America the Beautiful', Jacques Tati's masterpiece 'Mon oncle', and John Cassavettes' 'Gloria'.

The hands-on aspect of the festival, the workshops, will begin on Monday 16th of November at the Fulbright Center and Ledra Palace, and will take place between 3pm and 6pm. A youth team has already been assigned the task of creating a short film dedicated to the celebrations for the rights of children around the world, which will be screened during the bi-communal weekend.

In addition, this year the ICFFCY will also introduce a 'different' bi-communal weekend on the 21st and 22nd of November, giving young people opportunities to take part in a variety of activities at the Goeth Institute, the Fulbright Center and Ledra Palace. The closing ceremony will take place on Saturday, 21st November, at 8pm at the Pantheon Art Cinema.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the name of Woody Allen’s next movie is "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger". The title of the film is taken from the lyrics of a song entitled Kemal, which was written by Manos Hatzidakis and Marty Fulterman for the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble's album Reflections.

The film revolves around different members of a family, their tangled love lives and their attempts to try to solve their problems.

The film was shot in London, marking Allen returning to filming in Europe.Originally, Nicole Kidman was cast in one of the lead roles. Scheduling conflicts arose because of her production company and her film Rabbit Hole.She was eventually replaced by Lucy Punch.
