Just Popping In

While looking through my Pinterest Snacks board to find something to make for the Superbowl, I came across a recipe I had pinned from this blog. And that led to several minutes of browsing through my past life. And it reminded me why I started blogging in the first place. It was really nice to have my thoughts and ideas written out, like a journal or a story.

I miss blogging.

It has been over a year since I last posted on this blog. A lot has happened in that time. A lot. So much.

Graduated from college.
Got engaged (!!!!!) to my drummer.
Adopted a dog (She is adorable! If I actually keep up with this thing, pictures will come)
Went to New York
Moved to a new apartment
Drummer moved to Austin (sad)
Played "Kate Monster" in Avenue Q at Theatre Baton Rouge
Started graduate school
All while planning a wedding!

So, that's been me for the last year. I can't complain. Life has treated me well.

Busy, Busy, Such a Tizzy!

If I had to describe my life as of late in three words, they would be: Busy, Busy, and Busy.

School is busy! Theater is busy! Life is just one big pile of busy! Lot's of papers and tests and performances. And on top of all that, I'm studying for the GRE, applying to Grad School, and trying (and failing) to keep up with my running. Busy, busy, busy...

And I wouldn't have it any other way!

Actually...now that you mention it...I could go without the tests and papers... and I'd rather not have to retake the GRE and deal with Grad school applications...and I've increased my running mileage, so it's kind of a pain in the you-know-what at the moment. But you get the idea!

2) The last time I went to the beach was this past August. My family goes to the beach every year thanks to my incredibly generous Grandfather. It's a trip I look forward to every year. It was especially special this year because boyfriend got to come join us for the past few days.

3) My last vacation was the beach. See above answer.

4) The last place I drove was home from the theater.

5) The last song I listened to was that new Adele song for James Bond movie.

6) The last thing I watched on TV was "Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta." LOVE that show.

7) The last time I said "I love you" was to boyfriend a little while ago.

Happy Autumnal Equinox! Did you know that today we will have equal hours of sunlight and darkness? Well, now you do. And your life is much better because of it, isn't it?

It is finally Friday! And I, for one, couldn't be happier! This week has dragged on slower than a snail carrying a pebble. I don't know why. Perhaps it was because I had three tests? Or perhaps it was because I was waiting all week to get the iPhone 5 today?

Yes. This morning, I woke up at 6 and drove to the store to be one of those people who wakes up really early and goes to wait in line for a phone. And you know what? It really wasn't a bad experience at all. The people in line around me were nice. The store employees were passing out free water bottles and donuts. I got to do a little reading for school. And by 8:30, I was leaving the store with my shiny new iPhone 5! Hallelujah! My 3GS took a little rise through the spin cycle of my washing machine a few weeks ago, so I've been using my 1st Generation. I was so ready to upgrade.

Y'all. It's awesome. And that's all I'm going to say about it because this is not a blog post about the iPhone. It is.....

1) Something I am very proud of is the fact that I've gotten myself running again. I really have surprised myself with the awesome things I can do if I just get off my butt and do them.

2) My favorite thing about myself is my hair color. I inherited it from my grandmother and it reminds me of her daily.

3) My favorite color for fall is deep purple. Really, I just love purple.

4) Something I've been learning lately is sign language. I'm taking a course at school in manual communication, and part of that class is learning signs so that we can sign in English word order. This is different from American Sign Language. ASL is a completely different language. This class is making me really excited about using sign in my therapy in the future.

5) My favorite Pandora station is the Ben Folds stations for music and the Louis C.K station for long car rides.

6) This weekend, I will rest, rehearse, and study. Tomorrow, I have a 12 hour tech rehearsal for The Importance of Being Earnest. I'll hopefully be able to use downtime during that rehearsal to study for the test I have next Thursday. I've got another rehearsal on Sunday evening. I'm hoping I'll be able to use all my non-rehearsal time to rest. But before that, I'm having a baking night with my roommate tonight!

Surprising Myself

So far, this week has been slow and stressful. I've had three exams in the past two days as well as a quiz. I am also in the last week of non-technical rehearsals for The Importance of Being Earnest, which is coming along wonderfully! I am so proud of this show and my work in it. I'm loving every minute of rehearsals. But, I'm taking it very seriously. Therefore, it is adding some stress. Good stress, but stress, nonetheless.

And on top of that, I'm running again.

By far, one of the most positive changes to my life since I met Boyfriend has been running. I've never had a good relationship with running. I used to spend all of my recesses and lunch periods in the school library. I dreaded the President's Physical Fitness test in elementary and middle school because I was always the last person to finish the mile run and my time was always over 25 minutes. In high school, I took a year of yoga to avoid all the running that was required in the general P.E. classes. Running and I just didn't mix.

Then enters boyfriend. Boyfriend runs. A lot.

When we first started dating, running didn't play a huge part in our relationship. Boyfriend would go running. He would return. I wouldn't let him touch me until he showered. End of story. Let's go get pizza. Then one day, after complaining about the weight I'd gained recently, I declared that we had to start eating healthier and that I had to go back to my really strict, pre-Boyfriend diet.

"Or," Boyfriend said, "You could start running with me."

"HA!"

End of conversation.

But after that point, every time I mentioned my dissatisfaction with my weight, Boyfriend would suggest I start running. And every time, I responded with a bitter "HA!" Me? Run? Never. That's insane.

Then one day, instead of laughing in his face, I said ok. I don't know why. Maybe the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars? Maybe I had been hypnotized? Maybe I was just sick of him bringing it up and thought that if I just showed him how hopeless of a case I was, he would give up.

That first run was a total disaster. We took off in the Louisiana summer heat and after what seemed like a lifetime, Boyfriend said, "We're almost to the half mile point." And I almost stopped and cried right there. And the sad part was that I hadn't even run that entire half mile. I had walked a good bit of that. I tried not to show it, but I felt so defeated and useless. I was really that out of shape. I convinced Boyfriend to let us head back to the car. As I walked back, my mind was changing. I had to accept that, in the case of a Zombie Apocalypse, I would definitely be one of the first ones bitten. And I was not ok with that.

I tried again the next day. And the next day. And the next day. And I kept trying. Everyday I ran was a personal victory. My running time around a small lake near LSU's campus (approx. 1.8 miles) kept improving. I was able to add distance and increase my speed. Every run was a new test. Somedays were better than others, but everyday I ran was a day I could be proud of. At my best, I could run about 2.75 miles around the campus lakes in just over 30 minutes. Take that, Presidential Fitness Test!

Then, the running stopped. Don't ask me why. I have a million excuses. None of them were good. I was too tired. Or my head hurt. Or I had eaten a heavy lunch. Or my legs were sore. Or it was too hot outiside. Or the treadmills were all full. Or Toddlers and Tiaras was on. Excuses, excuses, excuses. And it wasn't just me. Boyfriend had stopped too. Life was crazy and unpredictable. It was hard to keep any sort of routine when you didn't know where your life was going to take you in the next few days.

This week, I ran out of excuses. Boyfriend has found time of top of his full time job to start running. My entire family started running this year and has never let excuses stop them. If they could do it, then there was absolutely no reason why I couldn't do it. So this past Saturday, I dragged myself to my apartment's fitness center and made myself get on the treadmill. While I was proud of myself for making myself go and do it, I was discouraged at how much I had regressed in my time off. After a mile and a half, I had to stop. My running:walking ratio was a little too even for my taste and my time sucked. So I went back the next day and pushed myself just a little further. And then a little further the next day.

Last night was a rare night. I didn't have rehearsal, so I was able to run with Chris around the lakes at LSU. He likes to run the larger like, so it was just me, my iPod, and the small lake. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for the run. I was exhausted and I had a killer headache. I thought I would just go through the motions and get my legs reacclimated to running on solid ground again.

So, with that in mind, I started my run.

Imagine my surprise when I didn't stop until I returned to that same starting point 1.8 miles and 22 minutes later. My best run ever! I had never run that far without stopping before! I actually danced a little with I reached my finishing point. I may have even cheered! I'm sure I looked silly, but who cares! I had just done something that seemed impossible to me just six months ago!

Something clicked within me after that run. Not only did I feel amazing and unstoppable. I felt a new sense of control over my life that I didn't realize I was missing. I was no longer kicking myself for taking so long off of running. Instead, I felt empowered. Instead of focusing on the choices I've made in the past, I was thinking of all of the new choices that I will be able to make tomorrow—not just in running, but in every aspect of my life. I was reminded that I have the potential to do amazing things, like run 1.8 miles without stopping. All I have to do is lace up my shoes and take those first few steps.

It's funny how we can surprise even ourselves.

Getting Back Into the Swing of Things?

Hey, what's this dusty old thing? Oh yeah...I have a blog....

....oops.

Hello friends, real and imaginary! I hope that life has been kind to you! It has been for me :) It's also been hectic and unscheduled. And how can one be expected to keep up a regular blog schedule when one's life has no structure? One can't, I tell ya! But now that the school year has begun and my life has structure again, I'm ready to get back to blogging!

But before we begin, let me catch you up on my life :)

I have been cast as Cecily Cardew in The Importance of Being Ernest at Baton Rouge Little Theater. It opens on Friday, September 28, and, y'all, this show is going to be awesome! I have begun my senior year at LSU in the Communication Disorders program. I have good feeling about this semester! I genuinely like and am interested in my classes. My teachers are fantastic! There's only one catch...
Grad School. I have to apply for it this semester. I am so freaking terrified. I have a meeting with my advisor on Monday that will hopefully quell some of my fears. I've talked to some of my classmates and they seem just as terrified and bewildered as I am, so at least I'm not alone. Right now, my plan is just to apply to as many schools as possible and pray that at least one of them wants me.
I am officially a football fan! Well, at least an LSU football fan :) Boyfriend was appalled that I had never been to a single football game as a student (and only 1 game otherwise) and convinced me to buy season tickets this year. Y'all...football is fun! I love every part of it—from the tailgaiting to the tiger band to the clothes to the food to the game itself! It's all awesome. I feel kind of silly for not going to more games before now.
Speaking of boyfriend, tomorrow marks 6 months with him. Just a cute little tidbit :)

1) Right now, the weather where I live is improving. During the football game last week, I began to feel breezes blow through Tiger Stadium. When I walked outside on Sunday morning, the weather was so wonderful I wanted to skip! It felt like fall! Fall is my absolute favorite season! While the weather since then hasn't been as perfect, it has been pretty awesome! Hotter on some days than others, but the delightful breeze has remained. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's nice for the game tomorrow.

2) The best piece of advice I've ever been given is "Things fall apart so that they can come back together." A Rockefeller Center security guard after she mistook my crying with my head on the table for me being a homeless person in the days following my break-up last October.

She was right. She was so right.

3) My most favorite person in all the world is boyfriend. I even tell him "You're my favorite," on a regular basis. (I didn't include my blood family in my pool of possible answers. It's understood they they're held on a pretty high pedestal in my life.)

4) If I were to have a mission statement for my life, it would be Live. Love. Laugh. Repeat.

I just came up with that. I've never actually thought about a mission statement for my life before...haha.

5) My favorite thing in my closet is....don't make me choose! I love everything! The shoes! The dresses! The cardigans! I can't pick a favorite!

6) The best cure for a bad day is a hot shower, a cozy bed, swedish fish, and a really fattening meal.

Brain Dump

1. My brain is a huge mess of "Waaaaaaaaaa" tonight from watching the same 3 episodes of "On the Fly" and Jenna Marbles videos all night.

2. When I go in the shower with eye make-up on, I come out looking like a sad raccoon.

4. I am listening to 2 boys on Skype argue about where to put pizza in the oven and how to operate said oven. "Why would you hang it on the oven?" "Because it reminds me of home!" Boys are silly.

5. One of those 2 boys is Boyfriend, who is currently unavailable. Thus the Skype. I mainly watch him play Diablo while he watches me stare at the computer like a hypnotic loon.

6. Summer sales made me a very happy person today. I think I tried on the entire sale section of The Limited.

7. I got creative/bored tonight and painted all of my keys with nail polish tonight so I could tell them apart more easily. Now all of my keys are stuck together.

8. I'm still new to this running thing, so I don't quite know what I'm supposed to do on the days that I take a break from running. Today was one of those rest days. I shopped and then ate McDonald's.

9. Boyfriend was eating a pizza on Skype and was chewing with his mouth open (a sund which drives me up the freaking wall!). So I kindly asked him to chew with is mouth closed. He thought he would be clever and mute it so that I couldn't hear anything. So I thought I would be clever and hang up on him, expecting him to call me back. Well, that plan back fired. Boyfriend never called me back. Now I'm super sad, but also to stubborn to call him again with my tail between my legs.

10. Woah! Just kidding. Boyfriend called me back. Good things come to those who wait. Or those who are stubborn.

11. My room is a freaking mess. I don't even know where all this stuff came from. I started to clean it and then kind of hit a wall. I just can't make myself do any more work, despite the fact that my clean underwear supply is getting dangerously low.

12. I think I'm going to order Jimmy John's even though I didn't run and I've already had McDonald's today and it is 1:00 in the morning.

13. I ordered Jimmy John's. Now I need to find clean pants to put on so the JJs delivery guy doesn't sue me for sexual harassment when he gets here. Or vomit on my sandwich.

Oh...Uh...Hi?

*cough* Uh...hello? Is anybody there? I wouldn't be surprised if everybody left me for more consistent bloggers. I mean, it has been over a month since I last posted. But I swear that I have a good excuse for my absence! Life has kind of exploded lately.

First, 39 Steps, a show that I assistant stage managed at Baton Rouge Little Theater, opened.

That same weekend, I had the final rehearsals for and the performance of Singo de Mayo, as a part of my musical theatre class at school! I had such a blast this year. Look for a blog post about it in the near future.

Singo de Mayo was on a Sunday. The following Monday, finals week began with a double final day. Yikes! Luckily, all of my finals were done by Wednesday, so I got a little break during the day Thursday before 39 Steps started again that night. We had a show Thursday night, Friday night, TWO shows Saturday, and a matinee on Sunday.

Our stage manager, Mel, and the light board operator, Ms. Ellen. Saturday was Ms. Ellen's birthday, so we went out for dinner between shows to celebrate!

I wasn't feeling so great after the show on Sunday. I was nauseous, shaky, and exhausted. By Sunday night, it had developed into a full blown Summer Flu that was making it's way through Baton Rouge. I tried to just wait it out to see if it would go away on it's own, but when Tuesday came and I still felt like crap, I gave in and made a doctors appointment. And it's a good thing I did! Even though my flu symptoms were on their way out by the time I had my appointment Wednesday morning, the doctor heard rattling in my lungs and ordered me to get a chest x-ray, which showed that I had developed pneumonia! The pneumonia actually wasn't nearly as bad as the flu. It just made me really tired. The timing sucked though, because my brother and grandmother came were in town that same weekend. I barely had enough energy to even go out to dinner with them! But I trucked through. I was still able ASM the final weekend of 39 Steps.

I was still at risk for being contagious until 24 hours after I had taken my first anti-biotic, so I wore a mask my first night back at 39 Steps just to be safe. I didn't want to risk getting anyone sick! We needed everyone as healthy as possible for this show!

I also had just enough energy to go the LSU School of Music and Dramatic Arts Commencement Ceremony on Friday. Why? Because Chris graduated college (again)! This was actually Chris's second degree. He graduated with his music education degree a couple of years ago. This year, he finished up his music performance degree. Yep, I got me a smart one. :) Congratulations, Chris!

By Sunday night, I could feel the pneumonia fog lifting, just in time for me to start two weeks of babysitting during the day, which I absolutely loved. After babysitting wrapped up, Summer school began! But not before a busy Saturday. Saturday the 2nd began with a rehearsal for an LSU Musical Theatre Troupe performance. Eight of us had to revamp, edit, and, in some cases, learn completely new parts for musical numbers we did in Singo de Mayo so that we could perform them in Vidalia, La. As soon as I was done with the rehearsal, I drove to Lafayette to volunteer at the Louisiana Speech and Hearing Association Conference, which was such an awesome opportunity. I served as a session monitor for a class on Vestibular Assessment and Management (which means assessment and treatment of balance and dizziness issues as they relate to the ear). The target audience for the class was audiologists. Even though I'm on a speech pathology path in school, I still found this class really interesting (probably because it's so different from what I'm focusing on)! The speaker was great and I learned so much. I wish I could have stayed for more of the conference, but I couldn't because I had to go home and get ready for...

...Beaux Arts Ball! Every year, Baton Rouge Little Theater has a ball to honor and recognize all of the volunteers from the past season! It's always so much fun. There's mingling, food (really good food!), dancing, and an awards ceremony. The awards ceremony is kind of like a mini-Tony's awards. They give awards for Best Actor and Supporting Actor in a Comedy/Drama and a Musical and Best Actress and Supporting Actress in a Comedy/Drama and Musical. The nominees and winners for those awards are chosen by a completely anonymous group of people. I actually won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy/Drama a couple years back for my role as Sybil Chase in Private Lives. This year, 2 cast members from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum won awards, as did 2 cast members from 39 Steps! They also give awards for best Backstage and Front of House Volunteers, of which the winners of both were incredibly deserving.

A fun addition to Beaux Arts this year was a photo booth. Photos by Staci set up a fun photo booth and provided lots of props for us to use in the photos. Thanks to Dow Louisiana Federal Credit Union for sponsoring this (as well as our entire season)!

We brought our friends Mike and Elyse to the ball this year to add to the fun!

Summer school started up this week. I'm taking my last general education Spanish course (finally)! I'm really lucky this summer in that I've got a really awesome teacher who actually makes the language interesting and easier to learn. Spanish really is a beautiful language. It's just easy to forget that when your being tested on it.

Finally, this past Thursday, I took a trip up "north" with my mom and Chris to perform with 7 other musical theatre students for the fine citizens of Vidalia, Louisiana... in a bank! We did fourteen musical numbers, including "Anything Goes" from Anything Goes, "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair" from South Pacific, "Seasons of Love," from Rent, and a medley from Jersey Boys (which is such a huge crowd pleaser!). We had such a great turn out and everyone really seemed to love the show. Chris played the drums for us and my mom got to fim it. I'm so glad she got to come :)

So yes, life has been very busy for me lately. But it's also been very good to me lately. Sure, there may have been a few inconveniences. But there has been so much love in my life and I've had so many wonderful opportunities lately! I'm happy.

I'm not complaining :)

Happy Star Wars Day! I know I'm such a dork!

It's Friday, which means it's time to fill in some blanks! But before we get to that, let me fill you in on what I've been up to lately.

First of all, it's dead week here at LSU, but I personally believe it should be called "Death Week." School life is super busy with classes wrapping up. I've been using every free second I have to study. Well except for the seconds I'm using to write this blog post. But this is for my own personal health! There's so much in my brain right now that I'm having trouble thinking through the simplest things (What's my name again?). I need a brain dump!

One of the big parts of dead week for me this year is preparing for Singo De Mayo. What is that, you ask? Well, this semester, I am taking LSU's only (undergrad) Musical Theatre class (C'mon, LSU, get with the times!). For our final exam, we are performing a showcase of songs from musical theatre this Sunday, May 6, at 7:30 PM in the Shaver Theatre in LSU's MDA Building. This showcase is called "Singo de Mayo." It really is a ton of fun and we always have a huge crowd, but it's a lot of hard work! It really is amazing all that we can do and get accomplished in one semester. As if that didn't keep me busy enough, I am also also assistant stage managing The 39 Steps at Baton Rouge Little Theater. We've been in tech rehearsal all week and the show opens tonight. And you definitely don't want to miss it! This show is absolutely hilarious! It's pretty tech heavy too. Luckily, the crew is absolutely fantastic. They are so on top of everything and make my job so much easier. I am having such a blast working with them and the cast! It opens tonight and runs through May 20th. And, to top it all off, the boyfriend has started making me run (something that my body just wasn't meant to do). Guys, I totally suck at running. After about a quarter of a mile, I'm ready to crawl into a hole and die. Right now, we're running the "small" lake at LSU and every time we pass ducks, I always beg them to let me stay with them. Did y'all know that ducks have a stink eye? I've been using the Nike +GPS iPhone app, which, in theory, is pretty cool because it tracks your route and pace and how many calories you've burned. But then when you check your pace and it looks like this, it doesn't seem as cool anymore...

Look at all that red....just sitting there being so.....red. Stop taunting me, red!

So, yes, life is crazy busy at the moment. But it's a good kind of busy. I'm busy with things that I truly love doing (well, except the running.....but supposedly I will eventually get good enough at it that I'll actually be able to tolerate it. And then (hopefully) I'll eventually enjoy it. Supposedly...). Still, I'll be very relieved once I make it to Wednesday and I'll be able to take school out of the equation for a while.

Oh, and on a slightly unrelated note, my allergies have been a beast this week! Has anyone else been having major allergy problems like I have?

1. My bedtime routine includes taking a shower, brushing my teeth, and washing my face. I hate going to bed feeling gross and dirty. Once I'm in bed, I usually spend about 30 minutes or so on my laptop or watching tv. I know sleep experts say you're not supposed to do that, but I do it anyway. It works for me! Of course, that's on a normal day. Lately, my night time routine has consisted of just falling and hoping I hit the bed. Because once I'm down, I'm not getting back up.

2. I am super busy this weekend, but also super excited about this weekend. I'll spend tomorrow afternoon studying, but other than that, I'll be doing theater stuff all weekend! I'm super excited for Singo on Sunday night!

3. I can't stand fruit because of the smell and texture. Yuck!!

4. My idea of relaxation would be a week at the beach with a book, Pinterest, and people I love. Luckily, I get that every year. :)

5. If I had an extra $50, I would use it for gas or put it toward my credit card bill. I know, that's not a very interesting answer, but that's life, you know?

One word to describe this week: Hectic. And it's going to stay that way for the next 12 days. Not only do I have finals, but I also have rehearsals for Singo de Mayo (which is a performance that is part of my musical theater class) and 39 Steps at Baton Rouge Little Theater (which I am assistant stage managing). I think tonight is my last night to really enjoy the calm before the storm. Don't get me wrong, it's a good storm—like an afternoon storm on the beach—but it's a storm, nonetheless.

1. When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is roll over and hit the snooze button. I am not a morning person AT ALL. But once I'm up, the first thing I have to do is brush my teeth and wash my face or else I just feel gross.

2. I can hardly wait for summer. I DESPERATELY need a break. It's been a roller coaster of a semester and I am ready to get off, get some cotton candy and, ride the carousel.

3. The quickest way to my heart is through the meet-and-greet line because theatre is so important to me. If you come see me in a show, it means so much to me and I'll never forget it.

4. A little known fact about me is that I'm left handed.

5. The best part about my (future) job is the impact I'll have on the kids I'll be working with. I got to get a tiny taste of being and SLP this semester and I absolutely loved it. I am so excited about my future.

6. Something I just couldn't live without is chapstick. And chocolate.

7. Something useful that I wish I knew how to do was use a dslr in manual mode. I really want to learn to take better pictures. If only I could afford a DSLR.... *dreams*

Woohoo! It's Friday! Not that I'll get to relax much this weekend...It's getting to be that time of the semester when everything happens at once so the next 2 and 1/2 and half weeks are going to be super busy.

But right now, I'm just lying in bed enjoying the fact that I don't have to get up and go to school tomorrow (even though I still have to go to work, but at least I don't have to study for work!)

1) Today is a great day because it's Friday! I also had a really awesome morning at a school related thing.

2) Tomorrow, I will go to work, then rush home to get ready for a performance with my musical theater class. Unfortunately, that performance means that I have to miss my boyfriend's Senior recital tomorrow night. That makes me super sad.

3) My favorite time of the day is the evening because I can just relax. I alway try to take a little time in the evening to just shut down. My brain is off and nothing else matters for just a little bit. I finally get a chance to reflect on (or in some cases, block out) all of the things that happened that day. If it was a good day, I can go to bed happy and relaxed. If it was a bad day, I can go to bed knowing that tomorrow is a new chance.

4) Sometimes you just have to sit alone in your car, listen to calm music, and remember what life's all about.

5) A song that I can't get enough of lately is "Rumor Has It" by Adele. I'm not even a huge Adele fan (as a trained singer, it hurts my vocal chords to listen to some of her songs) but I just really love that song! It's fun and upbeat and very "I'm Awesome!"-ish.

6) My favorite accessory is my rings and a pair of earrings and/or a necklace. I feel naked without my rings! I used to go long periods of time without wearing earrings and have even had to "repeirce" them myself a few times. But since I started working at a jewelry store last summer, I try to wear them a few days a week.

7) My favorite thing about this week was filming and editing a project for school. That sounds so dorky, doesn't it? But it's true! I had a group project for one of my classes that involved creating a video presentation. Normally, I dread group projects, but I won the group project lottery this time! My group was organized and enthusiastic and actually wanted to do a good project! (Imagine that!) We used my university's CxC studio which was fantastic! We got to use a presentation room with Macs, a Smartboard, a flip camera, Apple tv, plus great help from the staff. I was originally dreading this project, but the combination of my group and the CxC studio made the project so easy and enjoyable! And I think we have an awesome project (a week before it is due, I might add.)

An Adventure

This blog post is so long overdue. I've been meaning to write it for two months now, but life just kept happening and blogging kept getting pushed further and further down the to-do list. There have been movies to watch, shows to perform, tests to study for, projects to do, people to love, friends to meet, rehearsals to watch, and jellybeans to eat!

But here it is guys. I'm finally about to tell you about the time I took a pole dancing class.

Yes. You read that correct. I, shy, quiet, modest Emily, took a pole dancing class.

And I had so much fun!

As you know, I recently closed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at Baton Rouge Little Theater. I played Tintinabula, one of the courtesans. Courtesans are Grecian..well....how can I put this?.... Well... they're Grecian prostitutes. They are sexy, confident, alluring women for sale. And our dances reflected that. But the thing is, we didn't all feel sexy, confident, or alluring at the beginning of rehearsals. We were stressing about how revealing our costumes would be. We were worried we would mess up or choreography. We were worried that in our attempts to be sexy, we would just look silly (even though I know our choreographer would never let us look stupid or silly. We were in good hands.) Towards the end of our first courtesan dance rehearsal, someone casually mentioned that taking something like a pole-dancing or belly dancing class might be a fun way to bond and find our confidence. We all agreed that was a good idea, but to be honest, I didn't think it would actually happen. Save for one girl, none of us had ever taken a class like that, and it would probably be hard to find a time, date, and place that worked for everyone.

We obviously had nothing to worry about with our costumes. I mean, do we look awesome or what.

Call it fate, call it destiny, call it kismet, call just a simple coincidence. But the next day, our choreographer e-mailed me the link to that day's Groupon....for Pole Dancing Classes. I immediately e-mailed the rest of the girls and we all bought a Groupon. We had no excuses not to do it.

We decided to go on a Friday afternoon/evening that we had off from rehearsal. We went to The Perfect Poleforma in Baton Rouge. Individual classes are normally $25, but with the Groupon, we were able to get them for $12. The classes are super small and, most importantly, no boys allowed! Our group of 6 was the entire class.

We had such a blast! Our instructor was fantastic. But you know what surprised us? Pole dancing is HARD! I know, that sounds so arrogant. But good pole dancers it look so much easier than it is. We we're kind of expecting to just go in, jump on a pole, and swing around like superstars. That definitely did not happen. I looked goofy and ridiculous and I could not stop laughing! I used muscles that I didn't know I could use. Pole dancing requires so much upper body strength. I know, that seems so obvious. The next day, I was sore in places that I didn't know could be sore. My armpits were sore!

I can't speak for the other girls, but I know that at our next dance rehearsal, I felt so much more confident and...dare I say it...sexy! I can't really explain it. I just felt so sure of my self and my character. Groupon, or no Groupon, it doesn't matter. That feeling is priceless.

Miss That Dog

I want to thanks everybody who has been praying for my dog Hunter and my family. Sadly, we had to put Hunter to sleep this past Friday.

Hunter had surgery almost two weeks ago and showed signs of improvement in the days following. However, tests results indicated that the tumor that my mother removed from him was metastatic cancer that had most likely spread. His condition suddenly began to worsen last Thursday and continued to deteriorate Friday. Although my family is absolutely heart broken over losing him, we knew that it would be unfair and selfish of us to keep him alive for our sake. He was an amazing dog that didn't deserve to feel any pain.

I love and miss you, Hunter. I hope there's lots of peanut butter and hummus for you in doggie heaven!

Hunter's had a rough week.

My family's had a rough week too.

First of all, I would like to thank all of my Twitter followers who prayed for my family and for Hunter this week.

In the simplest of terms, Hunter had a mess in his G.I. Tract. Anyone who's taken an intro Biology class knows what the G.I. Tract is responsible for, so I won't go into the detail of his symptoms. My parents noticed that something was wrong with Hunter last week. My mother, a veterinarian, had an idea of what might be wrong and began treatment for it. However, the treatment didn't work and Hunter's condition weakened. My parent's began to suspect something worse was afoot. I was busy with school and theater while this was going on, but on Monday, my dad called me, explained the situation, and suggested that I go home to see Hunter while I still could. At the time, Hunter was still comfortable and content, but his condition was deteriorating. He was weak and fatigued, his appetite was practically zero, and the spark was gone from his eye. I spent the entire afternoon lying on the kitchen floor next to Hunter while he slept. I just wanted to be with him when I still could. When I left that afternoon, I said, "Goodbye," like it would be the last one.

Misty napped next to Hunter a litte on Monday afternoon. These two have a special bond and she knew something was wrong.

We had two options. One was to keep him as comfortable as possible and let nature run its course. The moment we thought he was in any pain or discomfort, we would put him to sleep. Hunter has been too wonderful of a dog and we love him too dearly to keep him in pain just for our sake. The other option was to open him up and see what was in his abdomen. Hunter is a very old dog and whatever was in there left him weak and anemic, so surgery was risky. If my mom found something so catastrophic that it had spread and couldn't be removed or if she found cancer, she would put him to sleep right on the operating table. Once again, we love him too much to make him endure that pain for our sake. My father and I ultimately left the choice up to my mom, who was by far the most knowledgeable. When it comes to my animals, I have complete faith in my mom and I would never doubt her actions or opinions.

We decided to try the surgery. So, on Tuesday afternoon and through the night, Hunter received a blood transfusion to prepare him. We are so incredibly grateful for a co-worker of my mothers who offered to donate blood from her dog, who is a universal donor, to Hunter. I came home again on Tuesday night to spend more time with Hunter.

Yes, that's part of Hunter's blood transfusion. The bag was still too cool to give it to him, so I warmed it up on my stomach. :)

At one point, I just lied next to Hunter and listened to his snore. It broke my heart to think that could be the last time I heard it.

We weren't hopeful about the surgery, so once again, when I left that night, I said my "goodbyes" like they would be our last.

I don't think I stopped praying for a single second on Wednesday. I can't even tell you specifically what I prayed for. On one hand, I just wanted him to survive the surgery. On the other, I just didn't want him to hurt. I think I just prayed for his protection and for God to watch over my mom and the vet that would be assisting her with the surgery. I was attached to my phone all day waiting to hear word.

At 3:22 pm, my prayers were answered. Hunter survived the surgery. When I got to see Hunter on Wednesday night, I was just so grateful. I had said final goodbyes to Hunter 2 nights in a row, but he was still with us. This dog doesn't give up! And I'm so glad we didn't either.

We're still not out of the woods, though. While we hope we found the problem, it's possible that there could be something else lurking in Hunter's abdomen that's causing trouble. We're kind of in the "Hurry up and wait" phase now. Hopefully, we'll see improvement in Hunter's condition and demeanor over the next several days. If we don't...well....I guess we'll worry about that if we get there. But for the time being, I'm remembering not to take anyone for granted. Not my friends, not my family, and especially not Hunter. Your pets are part of your family and I almost lost an important member of my family this week. I may still lose him in the coming days. But I don't want to think about that right now. All I want to think about is making the most out of the time I have left with him, no matter how much time that may be.

Hunter is the dog of hope!

If you have a pet, be it a dog, cat, fish, turtle, snack, raccoon, or rock, give them some love today. I think we sometimes forget just how special they are until we almost lose them.

Farewell to Forum

The past few weeks have been insane to say the least. Yesterday, I closed A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at Baton Rouge Little Theater. That show really surprised me. To be honest, I went into the show just looking for my theater fix! I hadn't done any theater in over a year and was starting to get a little twitchy. But Forum turned out to be one of the top theater experiences of my life thus far. I made so many amazing new friends and, with the help of those friends, experienced a lot of personal growth. This cast truly kept all the drama onstage and just enjoyed being with each other offstage. And you know what, guys? I've been smiling so much these past few weeks, and it's all thanks to the wonderful people this show has brought into my life!

The wonderful ladies of the cast! We had a ritual that we did before every show called TTA. What does it stand for? Well, that's our little secret!

The entire cast of Forum!

At the end of the final show, we had to do something called "strike," which basically means "tear the show down." You clear out and clean the dressing rooms, put away the props, and tear the set down.

Girl power!

Last time around!

Yesterday's strike was different from a regular strike in that in addition to tearing down the set, we had to strip the entire stage to prepare it for an upgrade. This included taking down the legs and the curtains and stripping all of the lights off of the fly rails. Once everything was out of the theater, we all felt so small.

Standing on the completely empty stage reminded me just how amazing theatre really is. At it's heart, theatre is essentially a space, a person (or a group of people), and an idea. You start there and it grows into something truly amazing that can take a person away from whatever is troubling them, even if it's just for a little bit. I mean, how cool is that?

And theatre has a really neat way of bringing people together—people who probably never would have crossed paths otherwise. But theatre brings them together and something just clicks. Forum brought a wonderful person to me. Blogosphere, meet Chris.

Chris was our drummer for Forum.

He makes me happy.

I always feel sad at the end of a show–sad because I'll miss performing, I'll miss the characters, and because I'l miss the people. But I didn't feel sadness yesterday. I felt excited! Yesterday may have been the end of Tintinabula and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. But it's only the beginning of so many new and amazing friendships. And I can't wait to see where those friendships take me!

I'm not running to pick kids up yet, but I look a mess 90% of the time that I go to the store. If I look awful and disgusting, it ensures that I'll run into somebody I know, because that's just how my life works.

2. Do you finish a book if it's boring or you don't like it?

My OCD side really wants to finish it. But if it's that bad, I'll put it down and never get around to picking it up again. I have so little free time that when I do get a chance to read, I want it to be something I really enjoy.

3. Beach or mountain vacations?

4. What thing or event says "Winter will end and spring is right around the corner" to you?

In South Louisiana, you never really know what the weather is going to do. We've had a particularly warm winter and there have been several times this year that I've thought we had seen the last of any cold weather only for the temperature to drop the one day I don't check the weather and wear shorts to school.

I guess I would consider winter over when I can don't need to wear a sweatshirt outside to stay comfortable the majority of the week or when I it's warm enough to wear shorts the majority of the week.

5. Would you prefer couples or family vacation?

Now, when you use the plural tense "couples," do you mean multiple couples vacationing together? Or do you mean going on a vacation with an significant other? If we're talking about multiple couples, I'd rather go on a family vacation. But if we're just talking about a S.O., I can't really say because I've never been on a vacation of that sort. But as I'm growing older, I'm learning to appreciate my family vacations more and more. I've got a pretty awesome family and I sometimes take them for granted. So I'd probably still choose family. Plus, if it's serious enough with the S.O. that we're taking vacations together, he would probably be considered part of the family enough to get to come along on family vacations.

Where I've Been

Hello all! Long time, no blog. But, in my defense, I've barely even had time to eat during the last two weeks. This blog isn't the only thing that's been neglected. Just look at my laundry hamper!:

Every surface in my room is covered in dust because I haven't had time to go to the store and get dusting cloths (On a similar note, I also don't have any milk for breakfast tomorrow. Sad, sad situation.)

My dishwasher sat full all weekend after I ran a load of dishes on Friday.

And my desk is a cluttered, useless mess.

And (possibly worst of all), my Pinterest account hasn't seen any action in days!

What has everything fallen into disarray? Well, I've been a bit busy. First of all, last week was midterms week at school. And then on top of midterms, I was off at Baton Rouge Little Theater playing dress-up and having fun.

Jingle, jingle, jingle...

This past Friday, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum opened at Baton Rouge Little Theater. I am playing Tintinabula, the loud, jingly, air-headed courtesan.

We've had a great weekend of shows, but before we could open, we had a busy weekend of tech rehearsal. So last week, if I was either in class, at the theater, at work, or studying.

If you were smart, you wouldn't miss this show! It's pretty hilarious, if I do say so myself :) If you like comedy, dancing women, men in short dresses, or any combination of the three, this show is for you! Now that the show's open and midterms are over, the hard part for me is done. I will (hopefully) have more down time, which means more blogging. And dusting. I desperately need to dust. Whee!

Sup, peepsters? Once again, it is Friday, and once again, I am so glad it is. This week has been super busy. I had a test and 2 assignments due this week, plus A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum rehearsals really started picking up. The only time I got this week to just sit down and not do anything was the 15 minutes I had to stay at the doctor after getting a shot! But "busy" doesn't mean "bad." In fact, this was a good week! And I haven't been able to say that in a very long time.

So, without further ado, let's get to the fun! Time for....

1. The highlight of my week was taking an impromptu trip to my alma mater, Baton Rouge High School, to visit the choir. Choir was a big part of my high school experience and I didn't realize until I got to college how much I took that for granted. They have a very good program at Baton Rouge High, once that I think rivals most university choirs. I didn't think I would miss it as much as I do, so it was really nice to go back for a quick visit and hear some of the stuff they're working on now.

2. If I had to classify my interior design aesthetic, it would be broke college chic? Haha. My apartment is pretty small right now and I'll only be there another year and a half, so I haven't really gotten much of a chance to spread my interior decorating wings. But I think I've done well with what I've got. It's homey and welcoming.

3. My first vehicle was (and still is) a 2010 Pearl White Hyundai Sonata. I love my car. It's perfect for me and my style. And it's got satellite radio :D. I plan on driving this car until I can't get it out of the driveway anymore!

4. An item I need to have in my day in order to function is chapstick! I freak out if I don't have any chapstick with me. I especially love the Eos Lip Sphere, but any brand will do. Right now, I'm using one that was a promotional item from the COMD department at LSU. I got it for answering a question right in class :)

5. My favorite way to waste time is in bed. Pajamas, laptop, and tv on. Brain turned off.

6. Right now I could really go for some Thin Mints. Lucky for me, I have some :)

Oh, and someone to carry me to bed. Because right now I am so full from a huge dinner at Chimes East that I can't move. *Reaches for another Thin Mint*

7. This weekend, I will be in tech rehearsals for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at Baton Rouge Little Theater! We really do have a great show and you definitely don't want to miss it! We open next Friday (March 9), but we also have a Pay-What-You-Can Performance the Thursday before.

Deep Dark Chocolate Cookies

Remember when I told you about these amazing cookies and promised to share the recipe? And, in true Emily fashion, I didn't.

Yeah, oops. This post has been in my drafts box for three weeks. FAIL.

February has been totally, out-of-my-mind crazy. Between school, theater, and my body deciding to stop functioning properly, my brain's a little fried. Deep thoughts and proper sentences are not happening. But a picture's worth a thousand words, right? And I have lots of pictures!

So, for those of you who are just joining us, let me catch you up: At the end of January, a few friends and I had a girl's night! We all went to my friend Charlynn's house and watch the SAG awards. We all brought either a soup, salad, bread, or dessert to share. I brought Asian Salad and these cookies.

These were a little bit more work than your average cookie recipe, but they were so worth it! They were ever so slightly crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. And so rich and chocolatey—Perfect with a glass of milk! But be warned, don't breathe in while eating your cookie. I learned that the hard way.

Another thing I really like about this recipe is that it's gluten and butter free, so my friends with those dietary restrictions could enjoy them too!

These were a hit at SAGs night :)

I wish I had remembered to take a picture of my food before I ate it all! Tomato Basic Parmesan Soup, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Caprese Salad, and Swiss Poppyseed Bread. It was all so good.

*Fun Fact: It took me 5 tries and a google search to figure out how to spell "parmesan."

Deep Dark Chocolate Cookies

*Recipe found on www.divine-baking.com

Nonstick vegetable oil spray
1 1/2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips (about 9 ounces), divided
3 large egg whites, room temperature
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar, divided
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray 2 large baking sheets with nonstick spray.
Melt 1 cup chocolate chips in a glass bowl in the microwave, stirring twice. (About 2 minutes) Cool slightly.
Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites in a large bowl to soft peaks. Gradually beat in 1 cup powdered sugar. Continue beating until mixture resembles a soft marshmallow creme.
Whisk 1 cups sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt in a medium bowl to blend. On low speed, beat dry ingredients into the meringue.
Stir in lukewarm chocolate and half cup chocolate chips (dough will become very stiff.) Note: My dough didn't become very stiff. I think thick might be a better word)
Place 1/2 cup powdered sugar in a bowl. Roll 1 rounded tablespoon of dough into a ball. Roll in sugar, coating thickly. Place on a prepared sheet. Repeating with remaining dough, spacing 2 inches apart.
Bake until puffed and tops crack, about 10 minutes. Cool on sheets on a rack for about 10 minutes, then place the cookies directly on the rack and let them cool completely.

Makes about 18 cookies.

Oh my goodness, I need a cookie now!

Whew....it's Friday! This past week was busy! I already had a busy schedule. Add to that all the catch-up I had to do after spending 2 days sick in bed last week and you have one pooped Emily! There will *hopefully* be time and energy for blogging soon.

I'm a lazy bum.

2. Are you the kind of person who wants things more as soon as you know you can't have them?

Not particularly. If I already wanted something, know I can't have it doesn't make me want more. And if I don't want something, not being able to have it is going to make me want it any more.

3. If you were given $1000 to spend on yourself, what would you buy?

Well, what I would REALLY like to do is save it. But if I HAD to buy something, it would be an iPad with the smart cover. And then I would upgrade my iPhone. And then I would buy a pretzel.

4. Do you ever go out to eat by yourself?

Rarely. If I'm by myself, I'd rather get whatever I'm going to get to-go and bring it home. I always feel so awkward and sad eating out alone.

5. What company would you want to do a blog review for?

Hey, Ann Taylor Loft! I think you really need a particular redheaded blogger to review all of your future collections! And Apple, you know what your advertising strategy is missing? Review on my blog!

Oh, and Jimmy John's, I think we could make a little arrangement. How about a review in exchange for a lifetime of free sandwiches?
