That's a Good Question!

A client of mine calls today and asks me, "Where do Page Suggestions go on Facebook now?"
That's a really great question. Where do they go? It used to be when someone used the "Suggest to Friends" option on ALL Fanpages, recipients of the suggestion would get a notification on their home page and in their recommended area "Grand Master Flash has suggested you follow The Fly Girls" Fanpage. But no more!
With all of the changes Facebook has put into place in the last two months or so, even I have to stop and think, "where did they move that button?" Unless you are the Administrator of a Fanpage, you no longer can suggest the Fanpages to your friend list. So that sucks for the little guys, who are unable to sink thousands of dollars into branding and marketing campaigns. Suggesting pages to friends was a great way to build your fan base - a million years ago! Well, a million years in Facebook talk is like 9 months.
After my groovy quest to answer my client's question, I stumbled upon all sorts of info about that infamous "Suggest to Friends" option.

When searching Facebook's own help section for WHERE exactly the suggestion might now appear, it states: Suggestions may appear on the home page, in the new user orientation, on the Friends page, and in ad space around the site. To see more Suggestions, click the "See All" link.
That's it. MAY appear. Where's the guarantee that it WILL appear? Well, unless you purchase advertising space, a guarantee is out of the question.

But upon digging just a little more, I find that suggesting a page to your friends may not have been working in the first place... I found a help question on Facebook Help which every complaint was how people were not getting the suggested pages and even if they did not get it, there is no way to UN-suggest them to only retry later. Frustration Nation, I tell you!

Which leads me to:

What can you do to increase the viral potential of your Fanpage and service or product?
How do you get your name out there?

Here's how:

Content! Content! Content!

Use the tools available to import your blog, the feed from your website, feeds from your favorite sites, news, tips -- whatever works for you and your fans. Give them what they come to your for. If you're a real estate agent, talk about the market, share info from CNN and Forbes. But keep it fun and interactive -- send your peeps over to the DIY section of the internet and share tips on trimming the rose bushes and repairing a broken drawer. If you're an artist, post your work, share your upcoming events, talk about what inspired you to paint that lovely masterpiece on your easel. The more you post things your current fans like, the more they click the like button, which leaves your Fanpage link on their wall for their friends to see. Jane tells two people, they tell two people, who tell two more and so on.

USE Twitter -- even if you don't tweet.

Auto tweet is the key to being there, but not really being there. I am on twitter, and yet I don't have a huge following on my personal twitter account, but my other account, the one I hold for 69 Flavors of Paranoia, has well over 400 fans, and I've done relatively nothing with it. The way I see it, Twitter is there. It's not going anywhere, but I don't have time to Tweet my every move or stay up with the barrage of tweets which pour in every moment. So... I auto tweet. All of the posts I make on Facebook are automatically posted on my Twitter wall. I use Facebook and automatically the same message is posted on my Twitter wall with the right links and my message will be picked up with my key words (for the moment based on what I twittered) and bang. It's there. In cyberland forever -- twice. When a Twitter follower clicks on my auto-posted link to my newest wall photo, it takes them to my Facebook Fanpage Photo Album. Bang. Now they can click like, because it's right there at the top and in the middle of the screen.

Everyone has email. Why not use that?!

Email signatures are one of the BEST ways to share your Fanpage link. Every email you send out should have a hard-coded link to your Fanpage, Twitter, Website -- whatever networks you utlize the most. I would suggest no more than four. Another great way to use your email -- Gtalk users - include a link to your Fanpage in your status.

Share your own content.

When you post to your Fanpage, bounce back to your PERSONAL page and share the link you just posted to your Fanpage. Once you've shared it, your Fanpage will be Tagged in the post you make to your personal feed. Confused yet? I know, it sounds like gibberish. Take a look atthe pics.

This allows your friends to see you shared a link from your Fanpage and will give them the option to click on your page and like it. Research shows just under 65 million Facebook users are liking things on a daily basis through Facebook. Shouldn't you be taking advantage of that?

Utilize Tagging.

One of the best ways I have found to get your name out there, but not be "spammy" about it, is to talk about events and things in your area of expertise that have pages of their own. When I make a post on YouTube and share that on Facebook, I tag YouTube in the post. So my post, talking about me, from my fanpage will show as a post from my Fanpage on the wall of YouTube. How nifty is that? I am nosy enough, I poke around and click through on the page titles that get my attention, or the pages where a few of my friends all like. Chances are higher, if your friends like it, you'll like it too. If you need help using the Tagging system in Facebook, you can watch my YouTube video explaining how to do it. Granted, this video is about sharing an event, but the principal is the same.

Working at home, and for myself has been quite the adventure. As any business woman - or man - and I will tell you, it takes dedication to pull it off and get the attention you need and want. If you're a creative, Barbara Streisand and I will both tell you, making Art is an Art and it's hard to put it all together.

However, if you take these tips into consideration, it will help you stay focused, scheduled, on task and crossing things off your to-do list.

Set a Schedule

Just because I work at home, and I can stop, drop and go to breakfast with Sebbers or run to Sedona for coffee with Shey, but that doesn't mean I can do that every day. I do have a schedule set. It just so happens to revolve around the School District calender of events. Work happens around bus schedules to and from school. But that just happens to be what works for us.

Answer Emails and Phone Calls on a Schedule

I check emails and return phone calls 1st thing the morning and maybe an hour before I finish up for the day. Seriously. If I stop to answer emails every time they come in, I would NEVER get any designing done. It is so much easier to batch task my inbox and leave my creative day to creativity - not administration and client relations.

Email Organization for Tasking

I keep my email organized in such a way that it is my task list. Keeping everything tagged, color coded and labeled is just what I need to make it work-for me. I look at the list, see what' needs to be done, do it and then, when it's done - change tag and archive. Get it out of the inbox and remove it. This is how I know it's done. If it sits, collecting dust in the inbox, it's just there... looking at me, reminding me that it's on the task list.

*Note: If you have to, send yourself emails to help with todo lists. It is so easy to do these days with the use of Smart Phones.

Do 1 "Business Thing" A Day

Every day - one thing. Apply to a new group on Facebook or LinkedIn that your business, service or product relates too. Make a comment on a blog that relates to your line of work. Fan or like some Fanpage on Facebook. Write a blog post. Send an update to your fans or your network. There are tons of things to do, on a daily basis that will get your name Googled (which is good) and help you get higher in the search engines as well as advertising your name and what you do.

Take Weekends Off

No one can work ALL THE TIME. I can say this because I've attempted this and it's just not worth the physical and mental stress of not taking time off. No exercise, no mental break from the workflow and the physical stress to my neck and eyeballs... well, you get the idea. It was no bueno for a minute there. But, I learned the importance of TWO WHOLE DAYS in a row, where the box stays off and away from the internet and work.

You Get What You Give

Remember that! Really. If you give 110% then you will totally get it back in some way. I PROMISE! Karma comes back - at least I believe in that school of thought, so I give my all in every project I do. I really suggest you do the same. If you do a piss poor job, your client will know it and the next one will know it too.

So, if you remember to treat your freelance lifestyle like a "real job" then things will work out and the freelance route, you'll find, in this new economy is actually something worth pursuing.

Sharing an Event on Your Fanpage

Sharing an event with the fans on your Fanpage can be a fairly simple thing and can be done a number of ways.

You can COPY the URL of the EVENT and PASTE it into the Status Update box of your Fanpage as an update or and Attached Link.
As the Administrator of the Fanpage, go into the EDIT MODE of the Event you want to share (given you were the one who created the event for the page specifically (See How-To Create an Event For Your Fanpage)) and utilize the UPDATE FANS option.

OR...

You can use the easiest one EVER!

The @ Tagging System which Facebook offers.

@ Tagging is great! You can use it to tag a person, page, event or group in almost any Status Update. :)

Black Friday

I am not a big fan of the Black Friday tradition in America.
As a producer of product, it causes me to cram, rush and feel hurried to catch up with the rest of advertisers trying to cash in on the holiday dollar. As a consumer, I loath being pushed sooner and sooner into the holidays.

I fondly look upon a time in my life when I didn't get sick of Christmas carols until at least the 2nd week of December. Now, I am done and over it before December even begins. Bah-humbug I say to spending more money than any of us have because we feel obligated to make a purchase.

However, if you have a gift, something special that can mean something to someone for more than the average "new toy obsession" of 6-9 months, then give it. Give on giver, because beings nice, loving, caring and endearing are what keep us human and a loving species... but don't feel like you HAVE to spend money and get stressed out over "the holidays" just because Walmart, Target and Sears all say you have to.

Black Friday, however, was always a tradition in my mother's household. I remember waiting outside at some ridiculous hour to get the specially priced whatever-it-was that we needed/wanted. But, any good shopper knows, you must hit the battle field with a plan and a method of attack. I found a great listing on Wiki-How today ... How to Survive Black Friday in 8 Easy Steps. Which, I agree with every step they suggest.

However, I am going to suggest the best one yet. Stay in and shop online. Of course, my great suggestion is for you to shop at my Zazzle store. Have a happy holiday, and enjoy your Black Friday Shopping!

I like to be able to search what is going on with a specific "list" of people at one time. So, example, I have a list for my 69 Flavors of Paranoia Contacts, but I also have one for my Myss Miranda contacts.

Okay hard core coders... here it is. I found the answer! Customized landing tabs on Facebook.

We all know they exist... but now, I have learned how to show different content for fans vs. non-fans.
Getting the people to your page is the easy part. Getting them to commit and LIKE your page is another. Why not give them incentive to hit that like button before they leave? Let them know the mysteries you'll share when they become a fan!

This is a great way to offer up a coupon code or to do a freebie give away.

Friendship Page - A New Feature on Your Facebook Wall

Scrolling through my news feed, as I do, because that's what I do, I see a post from my buddy Jude to my other buddy Shey. Then I see the new cool feature Facebook has given us! The "See Friendship" Link which takes you to the brand new Friendship Page. This was announced today!

When two of your friends are in common, and they have a discussion, you would be able to see the two sides before, but now, with the Friendship page you're taken to a whole new level! Check out the screen shots below for the visuals, but now you have one spot that shows all of the comments, likes, shares, posts and common friends in one place. If your two pals are both going to a party, the RSVP'd Event will also show!

I think it's GREAT! Others will think it's horrible. This does once again bring up the conversation of security on FB, but that will always be a discussion as long as the API is around. Plus, I am sure there are lots of little tips and tricks to learn, so as I find them, I will update this page.

Until then, here is my friendship with the co-owner of Green Love Lube, Mr. Jude. I need to hunt down that great pic of the two of us and get rid of that ugly no body box... :)

I have never particularly been a fan of Fall or Winter. To me, the cold is depressing and I don't like being melancholy when it's do bitter outside.

But there is one night during the fall which is my absolute FAV! Halloween! It's the only night of the year, I can be whom ever I choose. Of course, the side effect of having children on Halloween is they too get to be whom ever they choose. This year I got a Senorita and a Spider Countess. Beside the groovy costumes and fun times comes the best part of the whole experience ... carving the pumpkin.

According to Wikipedia, it was back in 1239 when Mike Chernis carved the fist "Jack 'O" Lantern. After adding a candle, he mounted it to a stake so he could see through the dark London alleyways. However, it was not until 1866 that the "jack 'o' lantern" became a staple of Halloween and a notification to Trick-or-Treat seekers of all agers. I bet you though, any good Pagan will tell you the carved pumpkin was associated with the fall and harvest season long before candy corn and pumpkin carving contests were a hot commodity.

Which brings us to today's blog. A tribute to the most awesome pumpkin carver AROUND! Ray Villafane is known for his amazing carvings of our favorite orange bubbled fall veggie. If you do not recognize his name, you will recognize his art.

Every year, for at least 4 years, I have gotten a forward email with images of his work. So after a little hunting and whirl through Google, I have found and pulled some of them to share. Take a look. This is VERY impressive. For more information on Ray and his work, visit his website.

How To Select All Friends in Facebook

I have been managing Fanpages for clients since I discovered Facebook and the potential a Fanpage has on business, products and overall image. So I stay as current as I can on what's hot when it comes to Social Media. Recently, I've heard a number of studies and read quite a few articles stressing the importance of having a Facebook presence and how Fanpages are the new Websites for corporations.

Of course, this makes me think "40 is the new 30" and "Purple is the new Black," but I believe those theories as much as I do this: I would hate to see the "website" as we know change and go the way of the DoDo Bird, but the only thing you can count on being constant is change.

Anyway - one of the most often asked questions is "How do I select all of my friends to suggest my fanpage?" This question was even a mystery to me and I would have to admit I knew of no such magical trick. However ... scrolling through my News Feed this morning, I found a post on how to select ALL of your friends at once when suggesting a page.

MY OH MY! THIS WAS THE MAGIC TRICK!

AND NOW I HOLD THIS KNOWLEDGE!

The method Mr. Tim Linden has shared with us is an answer to my geek-girl prayers ... however, this might intimidate the non-java nerds. DON'T LET IT!

I was always told by my father "Patience is a virtue."
I never understood that as a kid. All I knew is how long it took for Mork and Mindy to run, because that meant that Happy Days was on next.

Fast forward to 2010: geo-tagging is one of many new hot things in social media. Checking into a restaurant, night club, or in my case, McDonald's for my morning brew, has become increasingly popular with brick and mortar businesses. Because let's, face it, how else do they keep up in a virtual business society which utilize media and marketing that move at the speed of light?

Working with Oaxaca Restaurant in Sedona, AZ, I started to notice the increasing use of the little white box. Online, print advertising, on TV and even on products specifically - the little white box was starting to show more and more.

To what white box do I speak?

The QR Code

From Wikipedia: A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

So, I think to myself, wow... the possibilities of the uses for the QR Codes are almost limitless. As I muddle over all of these possibilities, hence being patient, the technology answers my call and voila! Bit.ly has made it a SNAP to create your OWN QR Code for whatever has a URL! How to ENGAGE Your Fanbase

Sitting down to work today, which I accomplished quite a load full ... I find a new groovy tool for pulling in news feeds to stay on my game. And guess what I find. A very interesting list of "what to do's" from a universal perspective. Which they all hit right on the mark. The book, Engage is written by Brian Solis. He is a globally recognized as a leader in the "new media" arena/genre.

He says in his article:

Icons are Hot!

Since the day I had my first computer, a Mac Performa 460 (I know... a LONG time ago) I have been obsessed with jazzin' up the desktop. Making this window I stare into all day long MY WINDOW. Pretty things, funny things, anything to make it mine and personalize it. That's where ICONS come in.

I am a collector by nature. So when I need something, I get it to excess. Icons are no exception. I can spend hours finding, downloading and applying icons to every folder I have on my hard drive.

So today, my loyal followers, I wanted to share my top 3 favs for free icons.

Pixel Girl Presents. An AWESOME artistic mecha! I LOVE the way they support artists! Many icons by many different artists. Can I cram art related words in here again? I bet I could, but I won't. Just check them out! They rock! I was introduced to Pixel Girl by a former co-worker. Mikey. Mikey was a funny lad - tried to sell ketchup popsicles to women in white gloves once upon a time. But that my readers, is a blog for another day.

Icon Shock. "Holy Creative Destops Batman!" YES! They have superheros, to video games to business related and yes, even movie theater popcorn icons. These guys work on a points based system, but I've never really had to earn any...they just sort of seem to accumulate. So by the time I get ready to "redocorate" I have enough credits/points to get new icons! YEAH!

IconsPedia. The newest of my icon finds. While hunting for program and web 2.0 icons, I found this great little area of the interweb packed FULL of icons. The most FABOO folder icon's I've seen in a long time!
(As of 9:20pm on 9.14.10 this site was down for updates)

Elvis: The KING of Rock and Roll

Elvis Presley. I love him.

As a teenager I had a shrine to Elvis. Ask any of my friends - I was border line OCD. I had a scrapbooks, a limited edition Collector's Plate (thanks again Chris) and even a life size bust. Hell, I owned a Velvet Elvis and it was the cornerstone of my collection.

I would sing and dance to Elvis while I did homework, cleaned house, got ready for school - it didn't matter what it was. I listened to "Are You Lonesome Tonight" over and over again the night I was stood up by my "true love" during high school. But to this day, I still have Elvis programed into the Magical Hot Pink iPod. My girls know of him, his music and funny enough, the history of how he died.

Living in a house with an Elvis loving mom and a horror reading and writing father, Eryka has has asked us a number of times about how Elvis took bad pills which made him die. We've discussed - at great length - how the doctors could not fix him. I think she's secretly wanting to be a crime scene investigator.

Anyhow, as I was cleaning out my inbox for the first time in weeks, I found an email from a friend with "rare moment" photos.
