Intern for Booth Western Arts Museum

The Booth Western Arts Museum (Cartersville, GA) is establishing a series of writers events. They plan to start with the organization of a writers group at their location. They also plan to hold a writers conference, and to have scheduled interaction between interested writers and historical reenactors (period 1860-1895) for those writers to gain detailed insight into subject matter.

Note that the emphasis will be The Old West, so as to take advantage of the extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, and photography in the museum.

They would like to have an intern from the MAPW program assist and give guidance with all this. The intern would help identify key contacts, kindred organizations, and future writer/members. They would also help plan the conference.

Appropriate works (cowboy poetry and short stories) are planned to be published in a new anthology under the museum's name.

Our fall issue will be dedicated to Poets of Faith—and by that we mean poets who are adherents to a specific religious faith tradition. In a slight revision to the guidelines, the poems themselves need not be about faith, so long as the poet qualifies. After reading an early batch of submissions, we realized that your spirituality will be embodied somehow in your poetry, even if that’s not what you’re writing about explicitly, and it’s much more interesting to explore the subtle ways that faith affects the work.

So if you consider yourself a Poet of Faith, see our guidelines page, but the gist is this: Send up to six poems on any subject and a note explaining why you qualify to submissions@rattle.com by April 15^th.

MFA scholarship for Vermont College of Fine Arts

Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA), a national center for graduate education in the fine arts, and Vivian Dorsel '06, founder and publisher of upstreet literary magazine, announce the creation of the upstreet Scholarship Fund, a need-based grant for writers attending the MFA in Writing program. The $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to up to two students annually.
Vivian Dorsel, a graduate of Vermont College of Fine Arts, established this scholarship in 2013 to help meritorious and deserving writers attend her alma mater; in particular, those who might not be able to attend without scholarship support. As a graduate of the MFA in Writing program and a long-term supporter of scholarships for VCFA's Postgraduate Writers Conference, Dorsel has a deep understanding of the need for scholarships to help talented and emerging writers pursue their dreams of a writing career.

The Vine Leaves Mentorship Program

Not to beat you over the head with our mandate, but Vine Leaves has always been about supporting our fellow writers—giving voice to a writing style that is often ignored in traditional publishing circles. This year, we're taking that support one step further.

We receive thousands of submissions annually—good, great, AMAZING work from talented writers across the globe. While each submission is carefully considered by our editorial team, some are a little harder to reject than others. These submissions straddle the line between "not quite right" and "almost,"they contain a certain spark, or the writer has demonstrated an impressive work ethic. Those submissions give us an extra little ache when we hit the "decline" button.

But this year, we've decided to select one of those vignettes per submission period and mentor the writer, work with him or her until the piece goes from "not quite right" to "this is perfect for us." We're excited to continue our support of YOU—and continue to thank you for your support of us.

Submissions are currently open.

The next issue of Vine Leaves Literary Journal goes to press April 18, 2014 - lots of time for you to get your vignettes in. The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2014.
