Unveiling Karachi Port: A Journey Through History

Karachi Port is one of South Asia's largest and busiest deep-water seaports, handling about 60% of Pakistan's cargo (25 million tons per annum) . The port is located in Karachi, Pakistan, on the north shore of the Arabian Sea, and is in close proximity to major shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. The administration of the port is carried out by the Karachi Port Trust, which was established in 1857 .

The history of the port is intertwined with that of the city of Karachi. Several ancient ports have been attributed to the area, including "Krokola," "Morontobara" (Woman's Harbour), Barbarikon, and Debal . The first mention of Karachi as a port is found in an Arabic treatise 'Muhit' on navigation relating to the West Coast of India and the Persian Gulf. Written in 1558, this treatise warns sailors of whirlpools and advises them to seek safety in Karachi Harbor if they found themselves drifting dangerously .

In 1728 heavy rains silted up the harbor at Kharak, forcing merchants to relocate to the area of modern Karachi. In 1729, they built a new fortified town called Kolachi on high ground north of Karachi bay . The Karachi Port Trust was established as the port authority in 1886, and between 1888 and 1910 the East Wharf—186,000 feet in length—was constructed . By 1914, Karachi had become the largest grain exporting port of the British Empire .

Today, the Port of Karachi supports about 1600 ships each year, but it has capacity to handle many more vessels and much more cargo . The port handles about 26 million tons of cargo and 650 thousand TEUs per year. Current cargo volumes include about 12 million tons of dry cargo and 14 million tons of liquid cargo .

In conclusion, Karachi Port has a rich history dating back centuries and has played a significant role in the development of the city and the region. Today, it continues to be a vital gateway for trade and commerce in South Asia..

It was totally amazing and astonishing when I saw birthday Google doodle on the Google homepage. At first, I didn't understand what the doodle was. Later I thought there might be someone's birthday today. I decided to move the mouse pointer on a doodle to see who was celebrating birthday but I was completely surprised to see my name after moving the mouse pointer on Google doodle. Google rocks again :-)

This only happens when you are logged in via Gmail account on your birthday and log on to Google.com

Internal Auditor (IA) is just like a wife. She points out many things at your home. She keeps an eye on you. Always try to make you stick to the timetable and many times puts forward her opinion on different (every) issue. But but but, it is MANAGEMENT (husband) who takes the final decision.

An Accoutant's Birthday Wish

Everyone looks for unique, unusual and attractive greetings for loved ones birthday. Being a student of accountancy, I tried to make a birthday wish for accountants or those who belong to audit and finance profession. Children today are not like they were in our days

Parents are complaining about their children by saying this famous and most hearable phrase that “Children today are not like they were in our day”. It is quite true as children do not respect their elders like their elders did in their childhood. Children today are more materialistic than their previous generation.

Elders had showed very respectful behavior in their childhood. They respect their elders and could not question on any order they received. Sometimes they had no choice to say No or even Yes. They had given just one way out that was “Do it now!” They obeyed their elders promptly without arguing and without saying “If or But” Children today should obey their elders and parents as they are more experienced than them. Parents can help them to change their negative behavior by advising wisely. Here it is elders and parents role to play and help their youngster and children to grow up obediently.

But it is very interesting to know that today’s’ elders also heard same type of comments in their childhood by their elders. So it means elders today are like elders of the past but Children today are not like they were in their days.

It would certainly be a positive message by Pakistanis to the world if they success to gather 6000 or more person to sing Pakistan National Anthem together and make world record. On 64^th independence anniversary of Pakistan this year, Pakistani youth is going to attempt world record” For Most People Singing National Anthem.” And national anthem is indeed Pakistan’s.

We know ‘all is well’ but in Pakistan something is well. The organizers are waiting for permission from Govt. of Pakistan. They have contacted President, Prime Minister, Interior Minister and other local authorities but all in vain. Because of thousands of people, authorities are not willing to risk lives of the people.

According to Facebook page, Philippines are the current Guinness Record holder. Pakistan needs to manage just 6000 person to gather at one place and sing National Anthem of the country. Karachi, being country’s populous city, is currently chosen for this purpose. The city more than 14 million populations is the right choice. If Karachi is rejected, Lahore, 2^nd largest city of the country, will be the second choice. Estimated budget to hold this event is Rs.20 million (approximately US$ 235,294) including cost of volunteers, inviting the team of Guinness Book of the World Record and other expense of the event.

Currently it is decided that event will begin 10:30 pm on 13^th August 2011 till 1:30 am 14^th August 2011. Venue is Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim, Clifton, Karachi. This park is spread over 130 acres and largest Family Park of South Asia. If any delay in giving permission then this event can be postponed till 6^th September 2011 which is Defense Day of Pakistan.

So everything is almost ready but just permission is missing. I hope Govt. will give permission to this event and Pakistan will be listed in the first row of world record” For Most People Singing National Anthem.”

The number 14?

Have you ever thought about Numbers' influence in your life? (I'm not advocating Numerology) Do you know, numbers are integral part of your life? With numbers you count units, measure quantities and numbers, alone, make you Prime Minister of a country or throw you away blah blah. Well, students are very hungry for Numbers.

So, when I examined The Number 14, I found it everywhere, in my life and in yours. I want to share some interesting facts with you.

Here you go!

- My official name has 14 letters. (8 in Muhammad and 6 in Sumair. 8 + 6 = 14)
- I am 14th grandson of my Paternal Grandparents. (Excluding their daughters' children).*

Interestingly,

- At the time of my birth, I was 14th Grandchild of my Paternal Grandparents (including their sons' and daughters' children).**

(For relatives only, stop counting and read more ;-) )

- If I'm not mistaken, I had 14 class-mates when I was in grade 7. (My class-fellow is not agree with me but I'm waiting for others to confirm).

I beg to state that I am suffereing from Cricket Fever since 19th Feb 2011 and I have tried my best to complete my work but I am unable to do so.

Doctors (Cricket Experts) dignosed Cricket Fever and advised me to take a rest of at least 12 days (from 21th march to 2nd April) to become nornal. If I don’t take rest then I might be suffered Cric-o-phobia which is more distructive than Cricket Fever and unable to cure.

After having lunch, I got a SMS that reads as

"A nuclear power plant in Fukumi, Japan exploded at 4:30 AM today. If it rains tomorrow or later, don't go outside. If you are outside, be sure that you have rain protectors. It's acid rain. Don't let it touch you. You may burn your skin, lose your hair or have cancer. Please pass, stay safe and remind everyone you know.”

This SMS was first circulated in Philippines then Singapore.
