Lessons from the Squirrel

Table Rock Lake is beautiful at this time of year. My bride and I were fortunate to take a few days and get-a-way this week and enjoy God's creation. As I sat here this morning on the back deck, looking at the tree's changing color, Mr Squirrel came bouncing out of trees and on to the top rail. He saw me and stopped for a brief moment and then scurried back into the tree from which he came!

That got me to thinking about a few lessons we can learn from the squirrel.

Did you know there are over 365 species of squirrels? The tree squirrel, the ground squirrel, and the flying squirrel just to name a few, that kind of reminds me of the church. There are all kinds of people within the body, and although we may all be from the same family, we are all different. Allow people the opportunity to be different, but realize that we all add to the family.

Baby squirrels weigh about one ounce at birth. The have no hair, no teeth and are virtually blind for 6 to 8 weeks. Baby Christians are a lot like this too. Although they come with "hair" they still need to feel the heat of God's love from other believers. They come with teeth, but they are not ready for the meat of the Bible, they need the nourishment from the milk, and they also need help in guidance because they are just learning to see through these new eyes.

Grey is the primary color of most squirrels. Although some may be pure white and others pure black, they are both variations of the gray squirrel. Believers can also be white as they make the effort to be "washed by the Word", but many are black because of their lack of desire to please a Holy and Mighty God. Most are gray, which shows a hint of sin in their lives.

During storms and severe cold, the squirrel may not leave the nest for days, but he does not hibernate! As believers we are going to face storms and trials, and at times you may grow weary from the battle. Take time to rest and get away, just remember, we can't stay in the nest. The great commission tells us to GO! Matthew 28:19-20

The squirrels eyes are located high on each side of their head. This allows a wide field of vision without turning their heads. We need to stay focused on our cause, glorifying God is all we do and quit being distracted by whats on the left and on the right! Col 1:10-12

The squirrel requires some salt in it's diet, which is why you'll find him on the sides of the road sometimes where snow and ice may have been. Col 4:6 says, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with Salt..." There are at least 2 things salt does, it preserves and flavors. We should not be tearing people down, but building them up (preserving) and appeal to them in such a way that they would want to listen (flavoring).

The squirrels erratic path while crossing the street is an attempt to confuse the oncoming vehicle...which is usually his last mistake. We do the same thing in life, we zig-zag through life jumping from one thing to the next, changing directions at every whim, we usually yields in disaster. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the answer, "In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will direct your paths."

So the next time you're feeling a little "Squirrely" be sure and remember the lessons we can learn from the squirrel.

She's Growing Up!

Today was another milestone for me. My sixteen year old daughter got out of school and asked me to take her down to the bank so she could open up a bank account. Grudgingly I took her to Emprise Bank and tutored her through the process.

The nice "new accounts" lady (Denise) kept talking about when she opened an account for her son, who is now in college. I was already a little tender, couldn't she see that? My mind began reeling as I remembered that it wasn't too long ago my sweet Alyssa was winning the first runner up for Miss Carroll County, where she looted out and won a $50 saving bond! Yeah, that baby is tucked away some where in the files among the former house papers in the furnace room...long forgotten. And now she has to bring it up, like she really remembers it.

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't want her to have it, cause you know it's probably worth a whopping $52.87 now, with this twisted economy! Who knows, she might even be able to finally buy that pair of jeans she's been wanting for a few months, ha!

As I sat there, oblivious to the questions Denise was asking, I was humming inside my brain the words to that old country song, "There goes my life..." Sure, shes old enough to go get a bank account, and she's got her driving permit and is set on driving every time we get in the car, but she's already talking about me getting her a car. Erma Bombeck said, "Never to lend your car to anyone to whom you have given birth!" I think she might be on to something there. The next step is a car, freedom and then before you know it, she won't be coming home at night, she'll be off to college and marriage and kids and Lori and I are on the porch rocking in chairs (we are in trouble cause our porch is awful small). LIFE IS JUST HAPPENING TOO FAST!

Yes, I've got 4 other kids, but sooner than I can get my PIN number in the ATM machine, they are going to want a bank account too! Why do moments like this have to come? Because life goes on. It doesn't matter who won the football game last week, or how many trophies you've got in your garage gathering dust in a box, soon or later it just adds to your "stuff". Family, and people are what really matter, because if we do things right and strive to glorify God with our lives, we'll see them all in heaven one day. I hope and pray, I can do things right!

Age is a funny thing!

We'll I turn a year older today, September 2nd. If you're like me, it's hard to believe that you are as old as the date shows on your drivers license! 47? You've got to be kidding me, I don't feel a day older that 35! Truth is, it seems like it was just yesterday that I was in college...my how time does fly.

I used to think it was funny to hear people telling stories of days gone past, now I find myself doing the same thing. I did a little research to find out who else had the same birthday as me, there were several other celebrities with the same birthday...."others celebrities" did you catch that? {;^)

Keanu Reeves, Terry Bradshaw, Mark Harmon, Jimmy Connors...all guys that I would consider fairly successful. I'm just glad they get to share my day with me. Of course I'm not sure any of them will be here to blow out the candles on the cake with me today.

I thought I'd put down 47 things I've learned in the last few years, but then I wasn't sure I had 47 things. So I'll just jot down a few things I've learned recently.

Be slow to anger but quick to forgive - seems like many times it's the other way around.
Laugh a lot and have a good time - Life is short and if you don't laugh at yourself, there's probably somebody that is laughing at you, I'd rather have them laugh with me!
Remember to say thank you - seems like it's a lost art these days, just to say thank you. If you really want to do it right, send someone a card.
Be generous - I'm not saying give away everything you have, but don't hoard it all for yourself. A giving person is a happy person. I'm not speaking as a pastor but as a friend...share it with those who you really love, it will make a difference in your life and theirs, and you probably won't miss it.
Remember the little things - sometimes those are the things that make the difference. Send a text of encouragement, a card in the mail, send someone a gift card for a cup of coffee, bring somebody a dozen donuts to work, buy their lunch.
Shake hands, but a hug is even better - Give to those that are really important to you, a hug, that may be the last one you ever get, make it count.
Never eat alone - We were created to connect with others, make those opportunities count, if you don't need encouragement, somebody else does.
Be friendly - Life is really about others, if you want friends, you have to show an interest in others. People hang out with friend that care about what's going on in their lives.
Be on time - Show people that their time is as important as yours. When you show up late, you're actually telling the other person, "you're not as important as me!"
Honor your commitments - Sometimes life happens and you can't make an appointment or meeting, but let the other person know why, don't just skip out...that's rude! And don't give some lame old excuse...I've heard 'em all. Honesty goes a long way! I had a friend that sued to say, "so and so didn't come, because he had potatoes in the fridge" and that was about the truth of it...any excuse would have worked.
Be an Elephant - The old saying is "an elephant never forgets". Never forget the good things that people do for you, time may pass but remember what a blessing they were in your life.
Begin with the end in mind - I was reading a book not to long ago and I think this is a great lesson. Basically the author said imagine you were at you own funeral and people where giving a eulogy about you...what would you want them to say? Now go and live that way.
Love your family - They know all your warts, your mess ups, but don't neglect them for a paycheck, because one day the paycheck will be gone!
Live your life for Jesus - Too many people life for themselves and for the "things they have to get done" but remember, you can't take it with you. I've never seen a Hurst pulling a Uhaul! Store up treasures in heaven that pay ETERNAL dividends! It's one market where the stocks only go up!

Birthdays are great, and I hope I live to have many more! But if life gets cut short I hope and pray that I will have invested in enough people that for generations to come I can make a difference.

Shipwrecked

I was reading this morning in 1 Timothy 1:19-20 and was reminded of this thought. Having faith we continue to beleive the truth of God's Word, and we know that without it, it is impossible to please God. As Paul mentions here, we have to have a "good conscience" too. I think too many believers today forget about a good conscience.

Your conscience is like the rudder that steers you through the rocks and reefs and many times the rough waters of sin and error. If we are not careful to protect our conscience we could very well suffer "Shipwreck" in our walk with Christ. If you've watched enough pirate movies you know that a shipwreck most times means you will sink! I'm not saying that you'll lose your Salvation (if you're a true believer), but you will lose your desire to know the truth. If anything goes in your life, you can sear your conscience, and this is what happens when we don't listen to the truth of God's Word.

In the words of a famous preacher, "Do Right, Do Right, always do right." Guard your conscience, and make sure it matches up to the truth of God's Word. Didn't James say something about that...be doers of the Word and not hearers only.

Our God is an Awesome God!

This blog is a post for a message I preached two weeks ago at church, it is a good reminder of how mighty our God is!

How big is the God you serve? The question really is, how awesome is your concept of God? In Joshua 10 we see one of the great miracles of the Bible.

In all of our lives we are going to face opposition, just like Joshia did in verse 1-5. You will remember that the Gibeonites had deceived their way into a treaty with Israel, thus saving their lives. But when the hill tribes heard of it they looked on the Gibeonites as traitors and quite understandably decided to go to war against them.

By the same token we have chosen to follow Jesus Christ we are a threat to those who oppose His kingdom. And just like Israel, every one of us who wants to be a faithful servant of Jesus Christ will face strong opposition.

What if the place God puts you requires great sacrifice? What if it does not live up to your expectations? What if it doesn’t meet your idea of success? Can you trust God in that moment?

You have to be willing many times to make a COMMITMENT and follow through with that commitment. vs 6

The Gibeonites quickly sent word to Joshua, “Do not abandon us but come to our rescue. So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.” Oh, if men and women today still understood the value of giving their word and then standing behind it.

We also have to remember as believers, that God is always with us! vs 8 "And the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand; not a man of them shall stand before you.”

God fights for his own! Think of the excitement of realizing that God is fighting for you. We have all been attacked by the enemy, beat up by circumstances and wearied with our obligations. How wonderful it would be if God came to our rescue, took up our cause and defeated our enemies.

God fights for us too. If He were not constantly taking our side in the conflicts of life, we would have been overwhelmed long ago. Sin would have already defeated us and destroyed the last piece of character.

Just keep in mind that NOTHING is too great for God. vs 12-14

Picture the sight that must have awaited Joshua as he crested the ridge and looked down on the armies. Before him as far as his eyes could see were the masses of panicked soldiers of the enemy being pursued by his own soldiers.

And over the battlefield were clouds that were raining down hail just upon the enemy. Joshua must have realized two things; first, he had an unprecedented opportunity to destroy this army and secondly, that was not enough daylight left to achieve a total victory. So Joshua prayed a very unique prayer in verse twelve,

Then Joshua spoke to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” 13 So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.

I don't know how God did it, but I do know that my God is an awesome God and He is able to do what he pleases.

It is always good to remember that God listens to the prayers of his people. vs 14 And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the LORD heeded the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.” The day was unique not because of the unusual amount of daylight, but because God listened to a man’s prayer. Does it strike you as amazing that the God of the Universe listens to the voice of a man or woman who comes to Him?

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

One of my favorite shows to watch on TV is the fairly new show "Undercover Boss". In this show, the boss and many times CEO of these big corporations takes a step down and puts on a disguise and rubs elbows with the people on the front lines. He learns what is working in his company and what he needs to change. What I like, is the fact that these CEO's sit down and get to know their people (even if it is only on the show) and many times the show gets really emotional as the CEO learns the sacrifice these people are making to work for this company. I love seeing that kind of passion and emotion from a Leader.

As we approach Easter we can see that Jesus did the same thing when he came down to the earth. One of the main differences is that "he came to seek and to save that which was lost", and he didn't come "undercover". He did take on the form of a servant, but he was always about His fathers business. Our King gave up his rightful place on the throne, and sacrificed himself to experience our pains and be able to relate to what we go through. (By the way, Jesus was filled with compassion and emotion).

Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, ⁷ but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. ⁸ And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Phil 2:6-8

The next time you are asked to take on a task that you think is "beneath you", I challenged you to remember what Jesus did for you. Put a smile on your face and do it with joy and remember that Jesus said,“If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” Mark 9:35

Surprise!

Luke 24: 36-39 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” ³⁷ But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. ³⁸ And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

One of the most surprised times that I can think of in my life was the day that my wife got together with another family in the church and threw me a surprise birthday party on my 40th birthday. They had planned it all out and here I was thinking that I was going over to this families house for dinner, and I didn't have a clue. They asked me to go with them in to the garage because they had something to show me. As we stepped inside we were greeted with a huge "SURPRISE" and I am sure my face showed the shock! I truly had no idea and Lori had been able to pull off the big one! To make it ever cooler, the had set up tables and chairs and had a dinner theater (read, who dunn it) type prepared to play. It was a huge success and man was I ever surprised!

This is the picture I get here as I read this passage of scripture.Jesus shows up but this time the "SURPRISE" is on the faces of the disciples. They were scared to death (or maybe to life is a better term), but they could not believe their eyes. These are they very guys that had spent so much time with Jesus, and yet they weren't sure it was really Him. They thought they were seeing a ghost! Jesus asks, Why are you troubled? Why do you doubt it's me? In other words, I told you I was going to come back. Did you think I was just telling you a fairy tale? Just feel my hands, touch my feet, it is REALLY me...SURPRISE!

Now, Jesus didn't just rise again to see the surprised looks on their faces. At that very moments, he wanted to surprise us too , as he looked down through eternity. He wanted to surprise us with hope, surprise us with love, surprise us with forgiveness of our sins.

If you read the scriptures you'll find that Jesus was always surprising people are funerals. Every funeral he ever attended he woke up the dead! The question is, will you be surprised when he comes again? Or have you already made plans for his arrival?

Who owns the French Fries?

I started a series a few weeks back on the Generosity Revolution. It is basically a series on stewardship of everything God has given us. We fail many times to remember who it is that gives us everything we have. I read this illustration recently and I think it brings home the truth of stewardship!

A father and son we out driving around town one day and the father decides to buy his little boy some French fries. Then the father does what all fathers do: he reaches over and takes one French fry to taste it. The little boy slaps his father's hand and says, "Don't touch my French fries!"

The father realizes that his son is selfish. The father knows that he bought the French fries and, of course, they belong to him. The father also knows that his son belongs to him. The father could get angry, and never buy his son another French fry again to teach his son a lesson; or he could "bury" his son in French fries if he wanted.

The father thinks, "Why is my son so selfish? I have given him a whole package of French fries; I just want one."

God has given us life, talents, money and everything we have. When He asks for our tithe, people figuratively slap His hand and say, "Keep Your hands off my money!"

God owns everything we have. He wants us to:

1) Manage what we have for His glory.

2) Give back a portion of what he has given us.

Healthy Relationships

Relationship are great when everything is working right, but when something is messed up, they can be a disheartening! Have you ever entered a room and you knew someone was angry or upset with you? It just kind of lets the air right out of that room!

I have to admit, I'm a people person! I love to be around people, my wife has to pull me away sometimes because I'd have someone over or go out with them all the time. But you know, we live in a very relationally challenged world. I constantly amazed at how irrational some people can be when it comes to a healthy relationships. Every time you turn around, dysfunction seems to abound. I will say that I quite often I run in to people that seem to live in their misery, and they are always thinking the worst about you. They ain't happy and they want to make sure that you're not happy either. It's that old saying, "Misery loves company."

We also can take note that just because a person has influence or has a car load of money, does not mean that they are successful at relationships. I hate to talk about him again, but for an example look at Tiger Woods. He didn't have a shortage of cash and yet as we found out he was pretty messed up in his relationships...to put it lightly. I think you would agree with me that there are plenty of successful people who's families are in shambles. There is just nothing unique about a business or a ministry that is built at the expense of a marriage or family.

Andy Stanley says, "On the other hand, show me a man or woman who has built a great organization and whose family is thriving, and I'll show you and opportunity for God to draw big time attention to himself." That's when people sit up and watch!

As I say at church often, there are two things that are going to last forever and that is God and people. You were put here on this earth to have relationships with both of them. God created you to love you and then he created Eve to be a "helper" to Adam. Let me encourage you to never sacrifice relationships while pursuing your dreams. In 20,30, or 40 years it's not going to matter how much money you made, if you got that gold watch from the company or a plaque to hang on the wall. All that is going to matter is the relationships that you have with God and others.

I think it was Bill Bright that said, "When you get to heaven God is going to ask you two questions. 1. Did you accept the gift of my son. 2. Who did you bring with you?

I love to read but sometimes I get interested in too many books at one time. This morning the Lord work me up at 3:00AM, yeah, that's right. 3:00 O'clock in the MORNING! But that's alright, I was able to get a little reading accomplished. I got up and switched on the coffee pot and headed down stairs, trying not to trip over my 100lb German Shepherd who was sleeping in the middle of the floor. At first all I could see was a black blanket laying on the flood and then I realized it was Rikkor.

As I headed for the recliner to read, I grabbed an old book that I started some time ago called, "Visioneering" by Andy Stanley. I only had a few chapters left so I thought, I'll finish that one...now I know why God had me pick it up. It had exactly what I needed to read this morning.

I've been thinking about the various aspects of the church and what we need to do to accomplish more in 2011, so to be totally honest with you, I was a little overwhelmed and my brain was racing in the Indianapolis 500, but that's Ok they are all Honda engines and I used to sell Honda's...but I digress!

After considering all these items, a person can just become frustrated and consumed by the chore. So I pick up my book and there it is, I stopped in the middle of a chapter and so pick up where I left off..."PEACE, peace is a rare commodity. From God's perspective, the peace you maintain as your pursue your vision may be more important than the fulfillment of your vision." That's convicting to me. So often I allow the details and pressures of life to rob me of my peace and joy.

From here Andy goes on to say, "Do you know why peace shines so brightly in this world? Because everybody you come in contact with entered adulthood with a picture of what they hoped the future would be like." More than anything they wanted to be happy. Now several year on down the road, life hasn't turned out he way they thought it would be. We've accumulated a lot of stuff, but relationally things aren't right, and emotionally you are empty. We aren't happy and we don't have peace.

Jesus came to this world to give us peace. Luke 1:79 says Jesus came "To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." So if you really want to know peace, you have to know God and allow him to direct your path.

Change = Hope!

Many times we think of change as a negative, but it’s doesn’t have to be that way. The reality is change is the basis for Hope.

A single person hoping to get married, is hoping for change. The same is true for a couple hoping to have a child. Parents hoping that their child will take their first steps. A student hoping to graduate, is ready for change. A sick person that is hoping to get better. A financially bankrupt person hoping to make some money. An addict hoping to overcome and addiction. CHANGE is the basis for hope!

Just like Christianity is founded upon the possibility of change.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

2 Cor 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

It’s the hope of change that made Saul of Tarsus into the apostle Paul.

So why is it that so many Christians have a negative concept of and difficult time with change when it comes to the church? More often than not, it is because they see change synonymous with compromise. But the reality is that change is not compromise unless it involves compromising character or truth.

Although the God never changes his character, and never changes an established principle, in other words he can always be trusted. He does consistently change his conduct (what he does). He is unchanging in principle and ever changing in application.

God says, “I the Lord do not change”, and “Jesus is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Mal 3:6 & Heb 13:8

But in regard to his conduct he says, “See the former things have taken place and new things I declare”, and “See I am doing a new thing” Is. 42:9, 43:19 So today I want to talk about changing the church in conduct (practice) without compromising the character (principle) of God’s truth.

If the church is the hope of the world, which I believe it is. We have got to be relevant to this day and age. We can’t just do things because that’s the way we’ve always done them.

Now let me say, that this church must change if we are going to win the lost. We have to communicate Gods truth with doctrinal integrity, we have to know what we believe and why we believe it. We cannot poison God’s truth. We cannot water down God’s truth, as many are doing, to try to reach people by making the truth less offensive. The truth is the truth! It is the only hope that people have to find freedom and forgiveness.

We as Christian have no excuse for not communicating God’s truth in a culturally relevant way.

2 Cor 5:18-20 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.

According to this passage, We are called to be Ambassadors. It’s our God given assignment!

The Best Fruit Ripens Slowly

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.” John 12:24

I love this passage of scripture because it reminds me that in order to live we must die. This statement has been drilled into my head over and over in our Men's Fraternity group, I think Robert Lewis likes it too! When you think about your walk with Jesus, some days you may wonder, “Why is this so hard? I’m still struggling with so many problems. When will I finally get it right?”

In my journey as a pastor, I’ve learned that spiritual growth is often like the growth we see in nature – the best fruit ripens slowly. In John 12:24, Jesus says, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”

The problem is we tend to get impatient, so we dig up the seed to check the progress of its growth, and that slows down our growth! If you’re not seeing as much fruit as you’d like, don’t complain and despair. Growth takes time.As the old saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day!

In the meantime, try these steps for spiritual growth:

Nurture growth with God’s Word. I know you’re already doing this, but when you read the promises of God, again and again, it helps you remember that he is at work, even when you can’t see him at work. Many times he is doing the work behind the scenes. I compare it to working out. I've been pretty faithful to running on a daily basis, but I just don't see a whole lot of change...I mean come on it's been three weeks! {;^) But I know that inside me, there is something that is changing, and eventually it will appear on the outside too, but I've got to have faith. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Cooperate with God as he prunes. Praise God for the work he’s doing in your life, remembering the pruning is for a purpose. Recently we cleaned up our yard for the winter, and we cut all the rose bushes down to nearly nothing. But I know there is a purpose for it and in the spring we will see even more buds appear, but in the meantime it looks ugly. “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away;and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” (John 15:2 ).

Pray through the “fruit list.” Pray through the “fruit list” (the fruit of the Spirit) from Galatians 5:22-23. The Bible lists the fruit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we'll let these fruits develop in our lives and even "EAT of the fruit" we will become more like Him. Ask God to help you grow this fruit in your life.

If you missed our Sunday evening service this past Sunday you missed a really cool video! We watched a video called "Indescribable" with Louie Giglio. Let me just say, it was INDESCRIBABLE! But I'm going to give it a shot anyhow!

In the video Louie gave all kind of astounding facts about the stars in space and even showed a few pictures. He brought us to the realization that we are really small in the grand scheme of things, and "God is Big, really, really Big!" I love the fact that the God of the universe created all these amazing stars and galaxies, and yet he still cares for me. Not does He only care for me, but He sent his only son to pay the price for my sin.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. - John 3:16

The most incredible picture that Louie showed us was the picture of "The Cross in Space" - it is one of the most gripping pictures you will ever see. To me, it shows again how amazing God is. Louie made the comment that it has only been the last few years that we have been able to view this picture, with instruments such as the Hubble telescope. It's almost like God said, I'm glad you finally got here cause here's what I want to show you.

8 Ways for great Relationships

Ranking among the greatest Christmas movie classics, It’s a Wonderful Life tells a beautiful story about the priceless value of relationships.

The story follows the life of George Bailey, a man who sacrifices his dreams to travel the world, instead choosing to stay in his hometown and run the family-owned business after the sudden death of his father.

Throughout the movie, George’s humanity draws us into his life. As we watch him grow from a child to a young man, and then to a husband, father, and business owner, we see how George continually places the well-being of others ahead of his own interests. Yet, we can sense his frustration at being pent up in a small town, working long hours, earning a modest salary, and living in an old, renovated house.

You know how the story turns out I'm sure, but Clarence his guardian Angel said remember George: "no man is a failure who has friends."

Like George Bailey, most people can trace their successes and failures to the relationships in their lives. As a leader, you can’t be a loner. Your success is tied to inspiring a shared vision. Maxwell says there is 8 practices whereby you can have great relationships with others.

1. Let People Know You Need Them

When your dream is bigger than you are, you only have two choices: give up or get help. Inspire others to join in the dream by letting them know they are needed. Every person has a longing to be significant; to make a contribution; to be a part of something noble and purposeful. Invite people into a vision, allow them to participate in making the vision a reality, and show them how their efforts are part of making a dream come true.

2. Create a Memory and Visit It Often

“Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things.”

~ Cicero

Instead of accepting life’s lot, take responsibility for pursuing dreams worthy of memory. Exercise creativity to push for memorable achievements even when times are tough. Commemorate defining moments through mementos, and use the mementos as symbols to celebrate accomplishments and perpetuate memories.

3. Give Others a Reputation to Uphold

“Treat a man as he appears to be and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he already were what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be.”

Form a high opinion of people and back that opinion by equipping and empowering those around you for critical assignments. When interacting with your people, don’t allow them to be distracted by past failure; instead, steer them toward a promising future. Paint a picture of the potential you see inside of a person, lead them toward the realization of that potential, and hold them accountable to be their best.

4. Share a Secret with Someone

“Conceal a secret from your friend and you deserve to lose him.”

A Sicilian proverb says, “Only the spoon knows what is stirring in the pot.” When you allow another person to know what is stirring within you, giving them a “taste” of a plan or idea, you instantly make a meaningful connection with them. 5. Do for Others What They Can't Do for Themselves

As a leader, you have the precious responsibility of taking your people to places they could never reach on their own. You can do this in three ways: connection, invitation, and impartation. Finally, share your ideas, and by doing so, you’ll impart knowledge that others do not possess on their own.

6. Find the Keys to Their Heart

Uncover the passions inside those you lead by asking questions about each person’s dreams, values, and strengths. Accept and appreciate the fact that every individual is different, but constantly search for common ground to serve as a point of connection.

Within the first 30 seconds of a conversation, look to say something encouraging to the person you’re speaking with. By doing so, you’ll give others the Triple “A” treatment: attention, affirmation, and appreciation. When you add to others, they’ll be drawn to you.

8. Write Notes of Encouragement

Encouraging notes have a personal touch and represent an investment by the writer. Such notes are remembered by the recipient long after the writer has forgotten them.

Nineteenth century writer Walt Whitman struggled for years to get anyone interested in his poetry. In the midst of his discouragement, Whitman received a life-changing letter from an admirer of his work. The note read: “Dear sir, I am not blind to the worth of the wonderful gift of Leaves of Grass. I find it the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed. If you want to reach the top, don’t run over others. Likely, the only way you’ll reach the top is to be carried there by others.

Are "smart phones" killing your Relationships?

I started to write this blog and then I had a text message I needed to answer, oh wait there's a phone call, and look even an email is coming across right now. Let's see, which one should I answer first?

If you know me, you know I love technology. I think it's great that you can have a website and everyone in the world can see what's going on at your church www.brookhavenbaptist.org These days you can even "stream" your worship service on the web LIVE! (That means you can show your services in real time on the internet). I like the fact that you can text a friend and just encourage them, without being intrusive. I even like it that you can get your email and correspond to an important email, right on your "smart phone".

Gone are the days, of waiting 2 weeks to get a letter from the other side of the world. I remember growing up in Australia and waiting for what seemed like an eternity to get a letter back. I love that you can SKYPE someone in another country via the internet and see them, as well as talk to them, all for free. Twitter, Facebook, and instant messaging are all popular in this day and age. Life as we know it, has become a whole lot easier.

The problem comes when all these "assets" become liabilities! I'm as guilty of it as anyone, but have you ever been involved in a conversation with someone and then your phone vibrates and you grab it and check the text message coming across, all while the other person is trying to communicate with you? I've got to say, THAT'S JUST PLAIN RUDE! You have told the person standing right in front of you, that what you have to say, is not nearly as important as the message I'm receiving!

Can you imagine if these devices had been around during Jesus day? Picture Jesus with the woman at the well and as he asks he for a drink, He's texting his disciples and telling them what he's doing. She probably would have left that well, never knowing the power of the gospel. But of course he didn't and wouldn't of, he was focused on the relationship he needed to build with this woman. She had his undivided attention!

Although we've learned that communication is a major part in a happy relationship, we haven't learned that it applies to the one we are with at that particular moment. Let me give you a few tips to keep your quality time, quality.

When you're on a date with your loved one turn off the PHONE!Or at least put it on silent for the next couple of hours. If you're so important that you can't miss a call, or text or email, you need to go on a technology fast (if you're uncertain what that is, ask me later) - everyone needs to disconnect, so they can reconnect!
When you're at your child's ballgame, take a break from technology...the funny texts or emails from your "peeps" will wait until your family time is over.
When you're at church (you knew I had to get to this one) turn off your phone. I've seen people on their phones the whole time, there's no way God could speak to them if he wanted to. Give God and his people your undivided attention for that 2 hour period of your week. Who knows you might even get THE CALL of a heavenly nature.
When you're at your friends house for dinner. Again, it shows the people you are with that they are actually important.
When you're taking a leisurely walk with your loved one, disconnect for a few minutes and let them know that you care enough about them to block out everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for communicating via all these mediums, but just make sure you don't get your priorities out of balance! I don't imagine anyone on their death bed has ever said, "Man, I wish I could have sent more text messages, or I wish I could have answered that email" but I'm sure they wish they would have invested more in the lives of the ones that really matter. Take a break and connect with the ones that matter! A "smart phone" is only smart, when you use it wisely!

I know, but that one is cute. As Missy has quite possibly met any one of several violent ends, it is possible you might get a better cat out of this. 10 Characteristics of Growing Churches

I read his recently on one of my favorite pastor blogs (Perry Noble) and I thought I'd share it with you...it is good and hits the nail on the head! It is about the 10 characteristics of growing churches.

#1 – They have leaders that lead!
“For God so loved the world that He did not send a committee!” Not sure where I heard that…but its true!

#2 – A desperation for God’s power!
Prayer isn’t a good luck charm that is attached at the beginning or at the end of something…people are legitimately desperate for the power of God. They pray Habakkuk 3:2 prayers every day and…

#3 – They believe that greater things are in store.
They don’t just pray big prayers…but they have a sense of anticipation that is contagious! They don’t read Acts 2 and think “those were the good ‘ole days” but rather they think, “that’s where God STARTED this thing…we should be WAY ahead of this!!!”

#4 – They are full of ordinary people.
God always uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Jesus didn’t choose one scribe or Pharisee when He launched the church…and Acts 4:13 talks about how He used ordinary people to absolutely turn the world upside down. The staff LOVE the church…so much so that they would actually attend there even if they were not on staff!

Respect for tradition

Desperation for God’s power

Use of technology

Passion filled leaders

Belief that greater things are in store.

Ownership of the church – staff would actually attend if they were not on staff.

#5 – They leverage technology.
They don’t view technology as of the devil but rather as a tool given by God to reach as many people as possible for Jesus. (Btw…isn’t it funny that some churches are against the use of technology yet all of them rode to their church in a car and their church building has air conditioner?)

#6 – The church is full of passion.
People in the church actually LOVE the church and do not attend because they feel like they have to! (The only reason people get angry with the fact that you love your church is probably because they have no idea what it is like to actually love their church!)

#7 – They take ownership of the great commission.
They REFUSE to be “keepers of the aquarium” and instead embrace the COMMAND of Jesus to reach the world for HIM!

#8 – There is a willingness to change and adapt, even when it means they have to go against the very “innovative” ideas that they themselves once established!
Anyone can change the traditions of the past…but true innovation occurs when we’re willing to change the ideas that we once thought were innovative and ground breaking!

#9 – Generosity is embraced.
The world has never been impacted in a positive way by people that were greedy.

#10 – The people in the church are OWNERS, not merely “members.”
Members have rights, owners have responsibilities. The people in these churches understand that it is not the pastors job to minister to the people but rather the bodies job to minister to the body! And as a result people serve Jesus by serving others instead of sitting on their “blessed assurance” and expecting to be waited on hand and foot.

Burning the Qurans and Building at Ground Zero

Ok, this stuff just keep in coming and people just keep on asking the same questions, so let me give you my thoughts on this whole situation.

1. Does this hillbilly preacher have a right to burn the Quran? Well of course he does.

2. Should the Muslims have the right to build at Ground Zero...or nearby? Yes, they do!

Before you send me a bunch of hate mail, let me explain.The preacher is merely exerting his right to free speech by deciding to burn a book. Mayor Bloomberg said, "In a strange way, I'm here to defend his right to do that," Bloomberg said. "I happen to think that it is distasteful. I don't think he would like it if somebody burnt a book that in his religion he think is holy...and on the building of the Mosque at Ground Zero he said, "that the First Amendment compels all Americans to defend the rights of people to do unpopular things."

Now I would have to agree with both of those statements.Yes, they should be allowed, but they should be smart enough not to. It is a slap in the face to America to put a Mosque so close to ground zero. To many people it is offensive. I'll have to admit, if I had family member that was murdered by terrorist in the World Trade Center, I'd be pretty sensitive to them building there too. They do have every right, but just because we have the right does not mean we should in any way exercise those rights.

Just like the Pastor in Florida has the "right" to burn the Quran, does not mean that he should. My question is why would they want to build there? Why not somewhere else? And why does this pastor have to BURN the Quran, why can't he just throw them away, if he feels that strong about it.

The apostle Paul said it best in 1 Cor 10:23 "All things are lawful for me,^[c] but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me,^[d] but not all things edify. ²⁴ Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. Then in vs 31 he says,

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. ³² Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God,"

So just because I'm permitted to, does not make it the right thing to do. To me vs 31-33 is the clincher, "Do all to the Glory of God just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

Just how many does this pastor believe he is going to lead to Christ by burning the Quran? I would say, he will turning far more people off than attracting them to the one true God.

Let me finish with a great quote on of my friends put up by Sara Palin (and no I don't care what you think of her, she's right on this issue) "People have a constitutional right to burn a Quran if they want to, but doing so is insensitive and an unnecessary provocation – much like building a mosque at Ground Zero."

Have you ever seen a man without ears? I doubt you have. I think you would agree that it would cause us several problems not having ears. Much of our daily routines would be disrupted by not having ears. Good hearing is important. If you wear glasses, you'd have to come up with a whole new design, cause without ears, you would have no place to hand your glasses.

The Bible talks a lot about hearing. There are several references to it so I know it must be important. Prov 20:12 "The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them." Rev 2:7 says "He that hath an ear, let him hear".

I've been re-reading Maxwells, "21 Indispensable Qualities of Leader" again and I came across a few good thoughts I'd like to share. Listening is an important function that too often we overlook.

Take Oprah Winfrey for example, she has made a living just by listening to people talk. Don't get me wrong, she likes to talk too, but her show has been centered around listening. She said, " I remember being two years old and speaking in church and people would say, "That child sure can talk, That is one talking child." But she also does more than her share of listening. That is one of the successes of her show, is that she can listen and draw things out of people and talk about the issues.

Oprah Winfrey's ability to listen has been rewarded with remarkable success and incredible influence. (I don't watch her show by the way, but I have seen it on occasion.)

Peter Drucker on of the leadership guru's believes that "60 percent of all management problems are the result of faulty communication." I would agree with that and I would also say, that most problems arise from poor listening skills. This goes pretty much across the board. Look at you marriage. Most people will argue over two main things, finances and communication. A lot of times it will be communication over finances! Failure to actually hear what is being said, is probably the main problem.

We need to learn to listen better. as a Pastor, I need to listen more intently to the congregation. God has placed these "sheep" in my care to guide. But just as they listen to to "good shepherd" and know His voice, I am the under shepherd. A good shepherd doesn't drive the sheep, he leads the sheep.

In business, the owner needs to listen to his customers. I know that if you don't listen and respond appropriately it won't bee too long that you don't have customers. The old Cherokee saying states, "Listen to the whispers and you won't have to hear the screams." Unhappy customers are always a concern and they are also your greatest opportunity.

I would also encourage everyone to get a "Mentor" to listen to. No leader is so advanced or experienced that he can afford to be without a mentor. We can learn so much from leaders who have more experience than us. My father has been one of my greatest mentors, as well as several good Pastor friends. My friend an pastor Tommy Teague in Texas helped me through a rough patch in my life.

One of the keys to being a good listener is to meet people where they are. Get to know them personally and seek some common ground and build your connection with him. Then be sure to listen between the lines. Be sure to pay attention to the factual part of the conversation, but don't ignore the emotional content of the conversation. Sometimes you can learn a whole lot more by reading between the lines.

President Theodore Roosevelt was a man of action, but he was also a good listener and he appreciated that quality in others. Once at a gala ball, he grew tired of meeting and greeting people, who returned his remarks with stiff, mindless pleasantries. So he began to greet people with a smile saying, "I murdered my grandmother this morning." Most people so nervous about meeting him, didn't even hear what he said. But one diplomat did. Upon hearing the presidents remark, he leaned over and whispered to him, "I'm sure she had it coming to her!"

Learn to be a good listener...you just might hear something important.

Be of Good Courage

Joshua us one of my favorite character in the Bible. Joshua and Caleb were some mighty men of courage and faith. Joshua was the protege' of Moses, he was the next in line, and spent 40 years under Moses training. He was a great follower, which made him a great leader when that time came. He was one of two men that God allowed into the promise land, because of his faith in God.

Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying: ²³ Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. ⁴ From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory. ⁵ No man shall “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them—the children of Israel. be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. ⁶ Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. ⁷ Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. ⁸ This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. ⁹ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

A few things to note here.

The Lord tells Joshua that he is GIVING them the land vs. 2
Everywhere they walk is theirs vs 3
Basically everything they can see will be theirs vs 4
No one will be able to stand against him, and God will always be with them, and will never leave them vs 5

Even after repeatedly telling Joshua, I am with you, the land is yours, nobody is going to be able to get in your way, God still has to encourage Joshua to stand strong. To be courageous. Be of good courage.

Isn't that a lot like us? God has promised us the victory, we know that Satan can't defeat us, because God has said he won't give us more than we can handle. 1 Cor. 10:13 He will always be right there beside us and will never leave us. That if we'll take his word and apply it to our lives, he will make us successful. Joshua 1:8 Yet we still have a lot of fear!

Someone has said, "You block your dream when you allow your fear to grow bigger than your faith." Faith is trusting in God, even when things don't seem to add up, because we know that faith is something we must have in order to go. After all fear is a darkroom where negatives develop.

Be strong and of Good courage!

5 W's of an Encouraging Leader

I've been reading a lot of leadership stuff lately and one thing that keep coming up over and over is the need to encourage others. Many times as leaders we start focusing on the things we want and forget to take time to encourage and help people get what they want.

Recently I made a speedy trip down to Texas to attend a funeral of a pastor friend of mine. I knew the pastor fairly well, but I really knew the young preacher that was "handed the mantle" at his death. I attended the funeral really to support my friend, during a stressful time in his new ministry. One thing I heard over and over at the funeral was, what an Encouragers Dr. _____ was to other pastors.

While in Texas I stayed with some dear friends that we ministered with while I was on staff down there. I went down there with the purpose of encouraging my pastor friend and these friends ended up encouraging me. I found that this happens more often than not. When you focus on others, your need get met too.

The amazing thing is that when I got home, John Maxwell has written a few thoughts on this very subject! Seems to me like God is trying to get this message out. I know Barnabus was an encourager, and one of my favorite passages of scripture tells us to "Exhort (encourage) one another, so much the more as you see the day approaching."

Here are 5 W's every encouraging leader needs to remember.

1) Watchfulness

Encouragement carries more weight when it's specific. Be observant of the people around you on the job. Where do they excel? When have you seen them give exemplary effort? Make note of the ways they stand out, and use your observations as content for encouraging them.

2) Words

Everyone enjoys receiving genuine expressions of praise, especially when they're given in public. As a leader, leverage the platforms of staff meetings and team get-togethers to highlight the performance of your people. Your words of encouragement will reinforce good behavior and communicate value and appreciation to those you lead.

3) Writing

Spoken encouragement is powerful, but temporal. Written words of encouragement, however, are remembered by their recipient long after the writer has forgotten them. People can refer back to an encouraging card or note again and again, being uplifted each time they read it.

4) Wallet

When possible, leaders should reward excellent performance monetarily. However, the dollar figure attached to a reward isn't its only measure of value. As a leader, be creative in finding ways to give gifts of encouragement that have meaning and significance to those you lead. Perhaps it's an extra day of vacation, an extended lunch hour, or a keepsake. Whatever the case, be intentional about giving something of value as a means of applauding those who are doing a great job.

5) Winning

Sometimes the best way to be an encourager is to set an example. People draw strength from watching you persevere through adversity, and they are impacted when they see you make sacrifices to advance your vision. When you win by doing things the right way, your victories leave an impression on the spectators watching you.

If you, as a leader, focus on what you don't have, it will be very difficult for you to encourage others toward who they are to become. I call this competing leadership energy. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you can't pour your energy into what others need because those others become part of the solution to get you what you want. When you are grateful for what you have, you naturally are freer to encourage others. Bottom line, you can't encourage if you are not an encouraged person yourself.

Take all this in knowing that leaders, even the best of the encouragers, occasionally have a bad day. That's normal. But a leader will do whatever it takes, to get through it and over it, and get back in the game. That's my encouragement to you. You will have an occasional difficult day, but it's all worth it. Get some counsel from a friend, shake it off, remember your calling and keep on going.

Clean Your Windows

When you have 5 kids in your house, you have to make sure everyone has a job (chore) or else you'll find yourself running around like a chicken with his head cut off. Each child has their own assigned job, sometimes it might be vacuuming the floor, dusting the furniture, and always cleaning the windows.

Windows are funny things. They are not necessarily put there to be seen, but they are so that we can see other things better. A window placed in the right spot can bring countless enjoyment as you view the world from your house. You can dress them up with attractive blinds, and curtains, but really they are not to object, it's the viewing that is most important.

Sometimes the windows get dirty, especially with little ones because they like to put their faces up against them and give the dog a kiss, through the window. As they leave their impressions on the window, it makes it a little harder for the next person to peer through coca crispies and see the sights. We always make sure the windows get cleaned when it's cleaning time!

As a Christian we need to make sure the windows to our lives are clean too, because it's not about the window it's about what you can see through the window. It's important that people can see Jesus through us, and in us. We should be careful that we don't put on too much materialism and draw attention to ourselves, and we should pray that we don't put on too many blinds that people can't really see Jesus in us. We need to let the Light of Christ shine through us, as the scripture says in Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so Shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in Heaven."

So if you haven't taken the time, maybe right now is a good time to clean your windows before you go through the day, repelling the light rather than increasing it's strength.
