This boggled me since we were learning how bad cigarettes were in school and my own mother was doing the very thing that we were told would eventually kill her. The concept of addiction was something that my young mind was not able to grasp. It didn't seem realistic that someone would need to be defendant on something like a cigarette. Well, I decided to prove everyone wrong. At the young age of 16 (coincidentally, the age I started to make my own money), I made the conscious decision to start smoking just to disprove the concept of addiction. Well, guess what happened. Yup, you guessed it. I got addicted. Young, stupid teenager...

As I got older I became a more dedicated smoker. Eventually I was up to a pack a day. My folks showed some discipline. No smoking in the house. Smoke outside is what I was told (really wasn't fun in the winter). One of the things I was most looking forward to about college was that I could smoke inside my dorm room. Looking back, that is kinda sad. At one point, I attempted to quit and was successful for about 4 months. But we all know the drill.

Fast forward a bunch of years to my introduction into the work force. It seemed that smoking was a social thing. It allowed smokers to take extra "breaks" and get away from their desk more often. We could socialize while smoking, making new friends and giving us the opportunity to network with other smokers. The looks of consternation we would give to people who dare make a comment about our habit was not too be believed. Who are THEY to tell ME how to live? At the time I did not see the irony in that statement. It was my right as a smoker that was being invaded. And then when they outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants, we were up in arms. "They are taking away our rights" we would yell. Again, not picking up on the non smokers right to clean air.

Within the past few years, commercials have been coming on more and more against tobacco companies. Telling us how they lied, how they manipulate, and are basically the devil. While these may have some impact, it didn't really hit home. When they started to air some really graphic commercials, that showed people on their death bed in their most pathetic state of being, that is what hit me. (You can see some of these here:Outlaw Cigarettes The one that made me stop was the guy cleaning out the hole in his throat with a Q tip. I pretty much stopped that day cold turkey.

Its been over a year for me without a cigarette with no slips. I feel great and am quickly approaching the best physical condition I have ever been in. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Outlaw Cigarettes - This site has a couple of those videos that helped me quit. If you need to quit, love someone that does, or crave a cigarette, watch a few of these videos first and see if that changes your mind.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Conrad_Warrell

Smoker And Quitter

Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines. Today we're more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. Passive smoking is the act of breathing in secondhand smoke. The present study examined the hypothesis that smoking is associated with modulated serum activities and concentrations of paraoxonase.

Smokers

Smokers also tend to be less active than nonsmokers because smoking affects lung power. Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density, which increases their risk of osteoporosis (pronounced: ahs-tee-o-puh-row-sus), a condition that causes older people to become bent over and their bones to break more easily. Smokers are less likely to have as much energy as nonsmokers due to their body working over time to combat the poisons. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. Smoking affects the body's ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers. It also can make it more difficult for blood to move around in the body, so smokers may feel tired and cranky. Men who smoke contract lung cancer at 22 times the rate of non-smokers. Even heavy opium smokers actually smoke less than this daily. Nothing I say here is going to change anyone's mind, but here, for the record are my views, posted so that the smokers among you realize how non-smokers perceive you.

The fundamental point of this piece is that smokers smell. And I know all you smokers have heard it all before. If you have tried to quit smoking and failed before, take comfort in the fact that most smokers fail several times before quitting successfully. The good news is that it’s never too late to join the ever-increasing ranks of healthy nonsmokers.

Quit

Weight gain after you quit smoking: Can it be avoided. Is weight gain inevitable after you quit smoking. Gaining weight after you quit smoking is fairly common due to several factors. However, the health benefits of quitting smoking far exceed the problems associated with adding a few extra pounds. When you quit smoking, your metabolism slows down, which means you burn fewer calories. Also, your ability to smell and taste food improves after you quit smoking. Keep in mind that most weight gain occurs within six months after you quit smoking. It is possible to quit smoking and not gain weight. Also, if you miss having something to do with your mouth and hands after quitting smoking, try chewing on toothpicks, straws, fat-free pretzels, carrots, celery or sugar-free mints. Joining a program that helps people quit smoking; and consulting a doctor about medications that reduce the craving to smoke may also help.

Smoking isn't Kool at all and it should be told. Smoking is directly responsible for 87% of all lung cancer cases in America each year. Smoking is not the only addiction that must be tackled in the workplace Personnel today. Smoking is down 18% since the tax increase. Gaining weight after you quit smoking is fairly common due to several factors. To quit smoking is beneficial not only to your health but also to family.

Sunantha Yancharoen is a Managing Director of TS Worldwide Marketing Company Limited. The risk of these cancers increases with the number of cigarettes, pipes or cigars smoked. Heavy smokers have laryngeal cancer mortality risks 20 to 30 times greater than non-smokers.

It is well documented that smoking has a direct carcinogenic effect on the epithelial cells of the oral mucous membranes. 95% of all oral cancers can be attributes to lifestyle factors, in particular smoking and alcohol consumption. The most common place for these cancers to occur is on the tongue (20%). Other common areas are the gums (18%), floor of the mouth (12%) and the lips (11%). Pre-cancers also occur 6 times more frequently in smokers than non-smokers.

Those who smoke and drink heavily are at increased risk because alcohol increases the permeability of the oral mucous membranes which is thought to enhance the carcinogenic effect of tobacco based products. Smokers who drink heavily have 6-15 times the risk of developing oral cancer than non-smokers/drinkers. Smokers who do not use alcohol still have a 2- to 4-fold increase in the risk. For both genders combined, cancer of the mouth and pharynx is the sixth most common type of cancer overall in the world.

One of the problems associated with oral cancers is that they often go undiagnosed because the initial signs are painless. Often the smoker will find other reasons for the changes, such as, they must have burnt their lips or they have been biting their lips. There is often an element of fear associated with consulting a health professional. 50% of people die from oral cancers because they have seen a health professional too late.

What to Look For

There are five main symptoms associated with oral cancers:

* Mouth ulcers that don't heal - just because you have had something for a long time doesn't mean that it is harmless. I recall one patient who stated that he'd had the lesion on his lips for over 20 years and he didn't think it was anything to worry about because he'd had it for so long - when he finally did have it checked into it was too late.
* A whitish or reddish patch anywhere in the mouth - this can be painless.
* Swelling under the neck or chin.
* Difficulty chewing, swallowing or talking.
* A persistent feeling that something is caught in the throat.

Use the following steps as a guide for checking your oral cavity.

Use a well light mirror to perform the check.

1. The neck - with your head tilted backward look for any lumps or masses. Then try to feel both sides of your neck and under your jaw line.

2. Lips - feel the inside and outside of your lips using your thumb and forefinger. Look carefully at the area as you do this.

3. Gums - with your lips pulled away so that you can see, examine all of the gums.

4. Cheeks - use your thumb and forefinger to pull the cheeks away from your teeth so that you can see them clearly.

5. Palate - open wide so that you can see the roof of your mouth and the back of your throat.

6. Tongue - with a tissue of piece of gauze in your hand take your tongue and pull it to the right and left so that you can see it clearly - examine each surface. Raise the tip of the tongue to the roof of your mouth and check the floor of your mouth and the underside of the tongue.

If you find anything and you're not sure whether it is a problem, have it checked out by your medical practitioner.

Oral cancers are closely related to the habits of smoking and drinking alcohol. These cancers can be devastating and often go undiagnosed. If you are or have been a smoker, check your oral cavity for changes. Changes you do find should be seen by a health professional. The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of developing oral cancers is to quit smoking. Join a quit smoking program and get the support and assistance you need to become smoke free for good.

Dr Jenny Tylee is an experienced health professional who is passionate about health and wellbeing. You may have seen advertisements for the new stop smoking pill, sold under the brand name “Chantix”. The ads suggest that you should “ask your doctor” if Chantix is right for you. We thought you might like to know a little about the drug before you “ask” for a prescription.

Varenicline would be the generic name for the new stop smoking drug. But, until Pfizer’s patent expires, it will not be available in generic form, meaning you will have to pay the higher price. Varenicline is derived from a toxic compound known as cytisine.

Cytisine is found in many plants, including the mescal bean, and there was some preliminary research suggesting that it might be effective for smoking cessation. Before they introduced their new stop smoking pill, Pfizer looked at many compounds similar to cytisine.

Drug companies cannot patent naturally occurring compounds like cytisine, so they have to come up with “derivatives”, something they can produce synthetically in the lab. So, the new stop smoking pill does not contain cytisine, the naturally occurring compound. It contains varenicline, the synthetic compound patented by Pfizer.

It is interesting to note that the only common use for plants containing cytisine is to induce a recreational “high”. Along with mild intoxication and heightened awareness of color, users have experienced nausea, vomiting, convulsions, heart pain and headache. Large doses have caused death due to respiratory failure

On a cellular level, compounds like cytisine partially block the body’s response to nicotine. The active compound in Zyban, the new stop smoking drug in 1997, does the same thing. Both Zyban and Chantix are supposed to reduce the pleasurable sensations that nicotine causes in the body and thus reduce a person’s desire to smoke.

Neither of the drugs are “magic pills”. They work best when combined with counseling, a “quit plan” and a support program.

Of course Pfizer thinks their new stop smoking pill is better than Zyban. They advertise that two separate studies showed that Chantix helped more people quit than Zyban. They neglect to mention that there were three other studies that concluded that the drugs were about the same.

A study published in June of 2007 indicates that counseling and support programs are just as effective as the new stop smoking drug or any other therapy. The researchers went on to say that counseling is the “sole approach without any adverse effects”. Smoking has enough “adverse” effects on our health and the health of those close to us.

Most people want to quit. They try one of the drugs or nicotine replacement. They get nauseas and throw up. They have headaches, trouble sleeping and bad dreams. They get constipated. They get frustrated and they start smoking again.

They may think that all of those side effects were from nicotine withdrawal, when in fact, those are the side effects of the new stop smoking pill and nicotine replacement therapies, like the patch. Zyban can make your mouth dry. It can cause you to shake and sweat and make your ears to ring. The most controversial side effect of Zyban is an increased risk of seizures. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms are relatively mild, in comparison, and usually only last a few days.

Whether you choose to try the new stop smoking drug or one of the other plans that are available, the most important thing is that you make a plan to quit and stick to it. Finding an easy way to quit smoking is the ultimate goal for any smoker who has ever considered to get rid of this addictive habit. Most smokers will be quite shocked after reading this statement but apparently the best way to quit smoking is NOT related to some miracle medicine in the form of pills, patches, chewing gums or other so called alternatives for addictive component of cigarettes mostly known as nicotine. To quit smoking is as simple as making the decision to quit. The key to quit smoking is understanding the process: why you smoke, how you got into it, what does it do to your body and what happens when you stop.
Here are 5 ways to help you quit :-
1. The main reason that may cause you to gain weight when you quit smoking is that when you can no longer enjoy the pleasure of smoking, you may substitute your newfound pleasure in eating for that of smoking. So that means having plenty of fruit, carrots or celery to chew on and of course sugarless gum to hand.
2. Think of the benefits . Quitting smoking not only extends the ex-smoker's life, but adds new happiness and meaning to one's current life. It is beneficial at any age, no matter how long a person has been smoking. Quitting smoking is not easy but you know this so you need to do something that blocks out the thought process of having a smoke. And that means keeping busy and putting all the paraphernalia of smoking out of your reach or at least making them hard to get at ! Never buy large quantities of cigarettes- it is like having a large portion of food in front of you.
3. Since smoking is often a response to stress, whatever you can do to reduce the stress in your life will help you to quit. You may want to consider relaxation techniques, massage, sports – anything to get your mind off your problems. The release of endorphins after most physical activity will lift your mood and help you to feel more positive. It really does help you to cope better with stress.
4. Tell everybody that you are trying to quit smoking. Let people know what your objectives are so that they can encourage you. Report back on your progress. You may not be able to stop immediately but one less cigarette in a day is a small victory.
5. Drink plenty of water – you may experience a dry mouth which is one of the withdrawal symptoms. Water has zero calories and will get rid of the toxins in your body. Second hand smoke has been scientifically proven to cause nasal cancer, cervix cancer, breast cancer and even cancer of the bladder. Second hand smoke is also responsible for increasing everyone’s risk of heart disease.
It is a well known fact that second hand smoke is a major cause of children's illness. As children develop their lungs and increase breathing rates, their environment could easily affect them in a negative way. Their risk of negative health effects from second hand smoking is at a higher risk than the average adult. Follow these tips to prevent children from suffering the consequences of second hand smoke;
1) If you must smoke, it is highly important to stay away from children while you do it.
2) Do not ever smoke in your home. It is much better to smoke outside.
3) Do not ever smoke in your car when your children are riding with you.
4) Make sure that babysitters do not smoke inside or around the child.
For teenagers under the age of 18, second hand smoke has been linked with pneumonia, lower respiratory infections, upper respiratory irritation, and increased severity of asthma and asthmatic symptoms. It has been associated with sudden infant death syndrome, middle ear infections, upper respiratory tract infections also know as colds and sore throats, cancer, and leukemia. A study recently released in Japan suggests that second hand smoke may affect children’s gums. 80% of the children exposed to second hand smoke, had developed a brownish and even black pigmentation of their gums.
Just keep in mind that every time you light a cigarette, you are affecting everyone around you, including loved ones.
For more important health articles visit Donald's Health Website. http://updated-health-news.blogspot.com/
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Donald_Mckenzie_Jr

Stop Smoking to Live Longer

We all know that smoking has a strong negative impact to our health. For example, more smokers die from high blood pressure than any other high risk group. According to American Hearth Association, smoking is the number one cause of sudden death due to hearth attack. Hypertensive smokers will suffer from stroke three times more than nonsmokers. 500,000 Americans die of smoking related illnesses each year. Therefore, every smoker should be aware of the danger that smoking will bring to their life sooner or later.

Many smokers might say that smoking makes them feel more relaxed. However, the nicotine in cigarettes will constrict their arteries and reduce blood flow. From the study, it shows that after smoking only two cigarettes, your high blood pressure will increase by an average of 11 mm Hg systolic and 9 mm Hg diastolic and your hearth rate will increase by 43 percent.

It is so difficult for any smokers to stop smoking. Actually, there are many prescription and non prescriptions on the market that will help them stop smoking habit. However, I would not recommend anyone to use prescription or non prescriptions drugs to stop smoking at the first time. There are 5 tips that can help you stop smoking by yourself. These are:

1. Make your car, home and office completely smoke free.

2. Change the brand of cigarettes that you do not like.

3. Chew gum, celery stick or carrot stick when having a craving.

4. Drink lots of water.

5. Avoid any trigger that make you feel like smoking.

The sooner you stop smoking, the longer you will live.

Good luck.

Joe Sitthiosoth is a health and diet researcher. With all the patches, tablets, gums, pills, self help guides, hypnosis programs, and self improvement programs, it's hard to tell the good from the bad. Most stop smoking products are completely useless. There are a few gems out there, but who wants to risk their money on finding them?

Well, if you want to save your money, this article is for you. I don't know if you are aware of this, but there are a number of free stop smoking programs. Well, they're not exactly free, but they offer free trials. And often the free trial is enough to get you off cigarettes forever.

Why do this companies offer this? It isn't charity. They figure that a lot of the people who sign up for freebies will become paying customers later on. That may be the case, but you don't have to fall into that trap. You can just use the free trial products. There's a fair chance that by the time the free trial is through, you'll be over your smoking addiction and ready to move on with your life. And you haven't spent a single dime.

The best free stop smoking program I know of is from a company called CigArrest. It's the best because most companies offer only one kind of product for a free trial, but CigArrest offers a complete package:stop smoking gums, tablets, vitamins which help you avoid craving, a self help guide, and stop smoking hypnosis audio CD. And they send it all to your house free of charge. Over the years they've helped more than a 1,000,000 million people to quit smoking so their products are of high quality. That's why they're sure you'll come back for more. But that is your decision. Why don't you start with the free trial. What have you got to lose?

To read more on CigArrest and how you can sign up for the free trial, click here: CigArrest Free Stop Smoking Program And Other Solutions. Fasting is one of the best methods to quit smoking, if not the best. It will give you what you need to quit smoking. A lot of us feel we can’t quit smoking but we can. We fast so God will give us what we need to finally quit for good.

You should fast for three days to quit smoking. Fast on brown rice and water or carrot juice three days in a row. If you can’t fast for three straight days fast one day a week for three weeks or as close together as possible. This method can be used cold turkey or with the method discussed in the last chapter of my book; although I recommend cold turkey with this method. This method will work for you, all you have to do is try.

There are other ways to quit smoking. For instance you could pray or meditate until the desire passes. The desire to smoke will pass.

Another tip I share to readers in my book Quit Smoking the Easy Way: A New and Revolutionary Way to Quit Smoking is to chew cinnamon gum. There is something about cinnamon that fights cravings for nicotine. We’ve all heard about the healing power of Aroma therapy. Well now you know cinnamon can be used to fight cravings!

I think one of the most important ways to prepare yourself for quitting smoking is the ritual of forgiveness. Smokers smoke when they are mad. This tends to bring the anger to the subconscious. Here’s an excerpt from my book on the chapter entitled The Ritual of Forgiveness: “This ritual frees your heart. First think about everyone who has ever wronged you. Make a list in your mind. Ask God or a saint in heaven to help you forgive each person and why you need to forgive them. Perform this ritual nightly until you have forgiven each individual.

You will find that your heart will become unburdened and you will forgive more easily. You will find that you are not only better off not smoking but that you are better off not holding resentment in your heart. Getting rid of any anger will help you to be a calmer person who is ready to quit smoking.”

Sallie Stone is the author of Quit Smoking the Easy Way: A New and Revolutionary Way to Quit Smoking. Many Reasons Revealed

I quit smoking in about 6 days and haven't looked back. Most people set a quit smoking date of one week forward while beginning the Chantix regimen one week before. This new anti-smoking policy seemed sure to pass since many Hawaiian counties already had enacted legislation to curtail smoking in public places. It is medical knowledge that smoking by pregnant women can cause very premature birth, low birth weight and respiratory illness. Most try many different medications and strategies, such as counseling, to stop smoking before they finally succeed. You'll find many techniques to use for developing the nonsmoking habit and holding on to it.

Quitting smoking is not easy but it can be done. Quitting smoking is only difficult if you don't know how to do it. The probability of quitting smoking increases the more you intend to quit smoking. There are a variety of programs and methods for quitting smoking because different methods work for different individuals. Giving up smoking is the single best thing anyone can do for their health and it is important to appreciate that it’s worthwhile quitting at any age. This means that black smokers may have a particularly hard time quitting cigarettes, suggests Scott McIntosh, PhD, associate professor of medicine atthe University of Rochester in New York and director of the greater Rochesterarea tobacco cessation center. Your first challenge is to make yourself believe it’s possible – that there is an easy way to quitting. You do not have a strong physical dependence on nicotine, so you could consider quitting cold turkey or without a medication to help you manage withdrawal symptoms.

Stop Smoking Now without any withdrawal symptoms . This is most easily done by chewing nicotine gum. This gum releases nicotine into your system gradually while you’re chewing. This helps to reduce cravings for a cigarette, and over time you will have less and less cravings until you eventually don’t need the gum any more.

Another method that follows these same principles is quit smoking patches. These patches are stuck onto your body, and gradually release nicotine into your body.

Both of these methods require will power to stick with – because you could easily just have a cigarette to reduce your cravings.

Also, both of these methods involve you taking nicotine still. This can be counter-productive in some ways, because you’re still taking in the nicotine as if you were smoking.

However, there are now some “natural” patches available, which use natural herbs rather than nicotine, although they still have the same effect as a nicotine patch. These natural patches usually contain Lobelia.

If you’d like to try something completely different to help you quit smoking, and then you could try hypnosis. For some people, it doesn’t work at all – but for many others it has helped them to quit completely in relatively short time-frames.

Whichever method you use, you still need the willpower to stick to your method rather than turning back to the cigarettes. It can feel quite stressful while you are quitting smoking, so you need to constantly remind yourself why you’re quitting to keep yourself motivated.

Chris Reach is owner of the Nicocure Review website, where he offers free information for those looking to quit smoking, as well as reviews of popular quit smoking products. These are the very reasons why the reasons to stop smoking are valid and need to be heeded as early as possible.

We all have our personal reasons to stop smoking. Some may already be experiencing the symptoms of the damage that smoking does to our physical health; some may be constantly ostracized by his or her own circle of friends; yet some may simply want to have an overall feeling of wellness.

Physical well-being is the number one reason to stop smoking

No matter how we look at it, countless studies have already proven that smoking can, indeed, kill, but why is it that people still find it hard to quit smoking even after learning about its dangers?

This is because smoking is a real addiction, and even if a large portion of the 400,000 Americans who die each year from smoking may have intended to give it up, most likely the addiction was too strong that they failed in their attempts.

One reason to stop smoking is that your likelihood of contracting a heart disease is cut in half. You will also be less likely to get sick of cancer of the throat or the mouth if the habit is discarded as early as possible.

This means that life expectancies will increase and people will live to their 80s or 90s if only smoking was eliminated for good. Now, isn't that a good enough reason to stop smoking? Wouldn't you want to enjoy the prime of your life, your retirement years, your grandchildren? It's much better to watch them growing up rather than to spend the rest of your life hooked to a respirator.

Another appealing reason to stop smoking is social acceptance. These days, more and more establishments frown at smokers, and smoking becomes less of a pleasure when you're constantly being asked to put out your cigarette or move to a less desirable spot.

Smokers at airports, for instance, are confined in a filthy, smoke-filled room while other passengers are free to roam the spacious air terminal grounds. Those in hospitals or schools have to get out of the building just to have their fill of nicotine.

A practical reason to stop smoking is that you'll have more money to spend on more important things. This may seem insignificant to smokers, but if you stop and compute the amount of money you spend on a pack of cigarettes each day, and multiply that by 365 days, you'll be surprised at what you could have saved instead of investing in such a hazardous habit.

We have a lot of reasons to stop smoking but we should also have a lot of ways to carry out smoking cessation. With the support of our friends and family members, quitting won't have to be such a struggle.

If you're still thinking of reasons to stop smoking, just think of your kids. They're probably your best reason to have to stay in this world a little bit longer, don't you think?

You can also find more info on stop smoking aids and american cancer society. It is never too late to give up smoking and the good news is that nicotine only remains in your body for a short period of time, about 2 days. Just in case you needed another push, here are 13 good reasons to break the habit.

1. By smoking you are at greater risk of suffering from a heart attack. If you break the habit now then the risk of a heart attack drops to the same as a non-smoker within three years.

2. Being a smoker can affect your fertility. If you are planning to start a family then the sooner you can stop smoking, the better.

3. Smoking brings on premature ageing. Smokers will often get more wrinkles around the eyes and mouth as well as suffering from dry skin. It can also cause psoriasis, bad breath and discolouration of teeth. A yellowing of fingers and fingernails from holding cigarettes is also common.

4. Smoking can increase the risk of impotence. This results from the effect nicotine has on the blood supply to parts of the body.

5. Cancer is high on the list as another major risk of being a smoker. Lung cancer is predominant but you could be susceptible to other types of cancers too. By getting treatment to stop smoking now, the risk becomes less for every year after breaking the habit.

6. By smoking you could lose your sense of taste and smell. This can lead to a poor appetite and this reduces your enjoyment of food and drink.

7. Nicotine dependency actually increases your stress levels. This includes living with a partner who doesn't like smoking, as it may lead to anxiety, arguments and other stress-related illnesses such as headaches and high blood pressure.

8. By giving up smoking you could have more money. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day, your habit is costing about £1,600 a year. What would you do with that extra cash? Go out more each week or save up and treat yourself to a holiday or a new car. Over the course of 20 years, a smoker can spend up to £37,000 - what a waste.

9. You are putting yourself at risk of over 50 different medical conditions. Health problems ranging from cancer, lung and heart disease to stomach ulcers and an increased risk of dementia. Some conditions are fatal, others disabling. If you stop now you can enjoy a longer and healthier quality of life.

10. If you are a heavy smoker (smoke over 25 cigarettes per day) you have a 50% chance of not reaching the age of 70. By getting treatment to stop smoking now, you could increase your life expectancy to over 75.

11. Smoking can lower your ability to do sports as it affects your lungs, heart and circulation . Take up the sport you've always wanted to play and increase your fitness level at the same time. Give up smoking, keep active and feel great.

12. Second hand smoke is commonly known as passive smoking, whereby a non-smoker breathes in smoke from the cigarette, along with that being exhaled by the smoker. It pollutes the air and can cause just as many health problems for the non-smoker, some minor such as headaches and coughing to major conditions such as asthma, heart disease and lung cancer.

13. Smoking smells. Get rid of that stale tobacco smell from your skin. hair, clothes and home by stopping your smoking habit today.

The good news is that while smoking damages your health, much of the damage can be reversed if you become smoke free today. Find yourself the best treatment to stop smoking today and break the habit.

Kim Clarke writes for treatment-to-stop-smoking.info, where visitors can get information about treatment to stop smoking

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Kim_Clarke

Stop Smoking

My name is John I tried everything imaginable to stop smoking, when something did work I filled the gap with food. Well you can just imagine what that was like, one habit for another I did manage to stop, it would last for awhile, then before you know it I'd have a cigarette in my hands. I bet I stopped about a hundred or more times before it finally happened and now it's been twenty five years, and no cigarette not even a craving.

What happened? Well that's kind of one of those things that you can't just put in words and get people to understand, but lets give it a try. One thing is you just have to ready, not just say your ready, but really be ready. I think when woke up one morning and said that's it I'm done, and threw my pack across the room, that's when I just knew that this was the time. I didn't eve crave food. During the past twenty five years I spent a lot of time looking to make my health even better, after all that was the biggest reason I wanted to give up the smoking habit.

I was born with jondess and in my mid fifties I was diagnosed with a liver problem. the many doctors, clinics, and medications were not coming even close to helping, as a matter of fact the meds were actually making depressed and always run down. Whats someone who has turned into such a health addict to do? Well I'll tell what I did. I heard a lot about alternative medicine and doctors. I visited a holistic practitioner and it changed my life style forever. I got into other things that were strictly natural, including the way I ate.

My diet is now only organic. Some people have said that I've gone a little overboard, to them I can only say that I'v cracked the code. I doubt it. They’re easy to remember and to repeat to friends, not to mention tremendously funny! Something not so funny is the tolls smoking imposes on your life and your family. So I’m going to tell you how to know when it’s time to quit smoking.

You know it’s time to stop smoking if you spend more money on cigarettes than you spend on food.

If you hack up a lung before you have your first morning cigarette, when you climb a flight of stairs, or find yourself gasping for air during any kind of moderate physical exertion, you know it’s time to quit smoking.

If your car refuses to start until lit a cigarette, you know it’s time to quit smoking.

When you have such bad dragon-breath that even your dog won’t kiss you, you know it’s time to quit smoking.

When the school principle sends a note home with your 6 year-old threatening to notify child protection services because your kid smells so strongly of cigarettes you must be letting him or her smoke, you know it’s time for you to quit smoking.

When you get lung cancer or have a heart attack or stroke, you know it’s time to quit smoking.

When you have to drive 30 miles just to find a restaurant that has an ashtray in the building, you know it’s time to quit smoking.

When you start drooling over the picture of a perfectly seared steak, and then your doctor tells you that it’s actually a picture of your lungs, you know it’s time for you to quit smoking.

If you have to take a smoke break in the middle of making love, you know it’s time to stop smoking.

So these aren’t as funny as redneck jokes, but that makes them no less true! And I could have given you at least twice as many more reasons why you should quit smoking.

The first thing to do to quit is to set a definite time to quit smoking. Circle the date on a calendar that you and everyone in your home see several times a day, and circle your quit smoking date with a red marker. Between now and then, prepare yourself to quit smoking by creating a timeline of items such as when you’ll buy your last pack of cigarettes, clean and get rid of all the ashtrays and other smoking related items. If you smoke a lot while sitting at your computer or watching TV, try to change the room in which you do these things, and don’t smoke in that room, so your don’t associate smoking with that room.

There are also fun things to do once you’ve set a time to quit smoking. Make plans for rewarding yourself with a weekend getaway, buying new clothes or that new computer you want, using the money you would have spent on cigarettes. Don’t laugh! Even if you smoke just one pack of cigarettes each day, at the cost of $3.50 per pack, you’ll save $1,277.50 per year after you quit smoking.

So now you're a little more educated. You know the benefits of quitting smoking. But knowing the benefits of quitting smoking is rarely enough to get people to quit. They need help. If you're looking to quit smoking and you're actually looking for a way to do it ON THE FIRST TRY, then CLICK HERE to Learn The Step-By-Step System that led over 95% of smokers to quit on their very first try!

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Mindy_Limbart

Taking Your First Step To Quit Smoking For Good

Everyone is encouraging you to quit smoking for good. You've probably thought over the problem and wondered if you could do it, but shoved the thought aside in the end. You're not ready, you think. Maybe you're thinking it's too late for you, that you're already hooked.

Maybe you're scared that you'll fail, so you're telling yourself there's no point in trying. Those thoughts are already a clue that it's time to stop smoking now, if only to prove to yourself that you really are that strong and can kick the habit.

Make no mistake: you will have to be strong to quit smoking. Stopping a habit is difficult, and one that comes with cravings is even harder to kick. But if so many people have stopped smoking for good, there really isn't any reason to think you can't stop smoking too. In fact, here is plenty of support, help for ways to stop smoking, as well as quit smoking aids available to make quitting easier than ever.

Before you decide to quit, sit down and write a list of all the reasons to stop smoking now. Think of everything you can: your health, financial aspects, odor and smells, house damage, risks for your children or friends. No reason is too small. Now, write down all the reasons you should continue to smoke. The lists probably don't even come close to evening out, do they?

The list of reasons to quit smoking should be something you carry everywhere for a while. The point is to remind yourself why you should stop smoking and have that list on hand to read each time you smoke.

You're eventually going to turn your internal dialogue messages into ones that discourage you from continuing to smoke, which is great.

Pick a quit date. Make sure it's a date well in the future and one that isn't going to have other stressors going on at that time. Your quit date will be the day you stop smoking for good.

Plan for it, prepare yourself for it and tell everyone about it. Quitting smoking starts a long, long time before you actually have your last cigarette.

Withdrawal symptoms are the worst part about trying to quit smoking. When you try to quit smoking, you might mentally think that you need the nicotine contained in the cigarettes.

Oftentimes, however, you can trick your brain into forgetting about those craving by drinking a glass of water or doing something else that will take your mind off it.

Your doctor can give you some medical advice on ways to quit smoking, too. You can choose one or more aids because it's proven that quitting cold turkey doesn't have successful results. Many people use patches, hypnotism, laser treatment, and other ways to quit smoking.

There really is no reason to be a martyr and put yourself through the hardest times possible. Accept help from your doctor, listen to advice about coping with cravings and make the process easier.

Author Resource:- Mike Selvon's quit smoking portal has some more useful information about how to quit smoking for good. You've taken a huge step on the road to getting healthier and living longer. Undoubtedly, you know that quitting smoking isn't going to be easy, so you'll want to consider all the options for stop smoking programs and treatments available. The good news is: there are a lot! Cold turkey isn't the best way to stop smoking anymore.

The nicotine patch is one popular way to stop smoking. When you want to quit smoking now, it isn't just about the physical need. Breaking the mental need to have a cigarette in your hand or hand is crucial too. This mental addiction can be made easier by using a nicotine patch, which gives your body just enough nicotine to stave off cravings and allows you to break the pattern of smoking.

One of the most popular methods of quitting smoking is hypnotherapy. If you want to quit smoking now, hypnosis can be an ideal way to avoid nicotine withdrawals and cigarette cravings. Since this stop smoking program involves little more than relaxing and being open to suggestive thoughts, you can stop smoking now and rid your body of cigarettes' harmful effects.

Anti-depressant drugs can help those who want to quit smoking now. Zyban, one particular medication, reduces the pleasure an individual obtains from smoking. Anti-depressants are prescribed by a doctor and your progress on the medication will be monitored closely.

Laser therapy and treatment is another way to end your smoking. It sounds easy and non-invasive. The general perception is that after one treatment, you'll quit smoking now and never look back. However, laser treatments haven't been proven to help people stop smoking long-term yet. While some people may have success, many others don't.

A stop smoking support treatment is an excellent way to quit. Smoking is a habit and the addiction is like any other addiction. Twelve step programs and support groups for smokers have been successful in helping many people find the willpower to quit smoking.

Having support for your tough times is a good idea regardless. So even if you don't opt for a stop smoking support program, try to find people who encourage your progress as a non-smoker. Tell everyone you know about your plans to become an ex-smoker. You may find that the helping hands are exactly what you need to get through the process.

In fact, most stop smoking treatment programs are effective when there is support and counseling available to the smoker. The highest success rates are from ex-smokers that developed a network of people to talk to and utilized multiple resources.

Your doctor is the best person to start talking with, if you want to end your smoking now. A doctor can give you information about all the other stop smoking programs available.

Author Resource:- Mike Selvon's quit smoking portal has some more useful information about how to quit smoking now. Learning how to stop smoking is easier now than it has ever been. There are all kinds of aids available, from nicotine gum to support groups. It may take some time and patience to find the right program or the right combination of aids, but it is well worth the effort.

Why is it worth the effort? Over 400,000 people die each year from diseases that could have been prevented, if only they would have quit smoking. If you stop smoking now, no matter how old you are, you decrease your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

You also decrease your risk of dying from a heart attack. People who smoke are twice as likely to die from their first heart attack as people who do not.

If you stop smoking now, your risk of lung cancer will be reduced by as much as 5% for every two years that you do not smoke. That means that after 10 years of being "smoke-free", your risk of developing lung cancer will be as much as 50% less than your friends who continued to smoke.

Knowing these facts, you may begin to see why it is so important to learn how to stop smoking, but there's more. People who smoke have an increased risk of developing cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus and larynx (voice box). They are more likely to have acid reflux or gastrointestinal reflux disease, which if uncontrolled can lead to cancer of the esophagus.

Cancers of the intestines, bladder, kidneys and pancreas are found more frequently in people who smoke than those who do not. If you stop smoking now, your risk of developing one of the types of cancer to which smoking is linked gradually declines. Still need more reasons?

People, who smoke, have more colds, are more likely to develop pneumonia and are more susceptible to influenza viruses. Cigarette smoke numbs the tiny hairs that line the nose and throat. These tiny hairs called "cilia" would normally filter some of the bacteria and viruses that you breathe in. If you smoke, they do not function properly.

Other reasons to stop smoking involve the health of your gums and teeth. Other than the obvious side effects of smoking, like bad breath and yellow teeth, people who smoke are more likely to develop gum disease and twice as likely to lose teeth as they age.

Emphysema is almost always linked to cigarette smoking or exposure to second hand smoke. In emphysema, your lungs become less flexible and exhaling requires great effort.

Men who stop smoking are less likely to develop erectile dysfunction. Women who stop smoking have an easier time becoming pregnant, have fewer problem pregnancies and less likely to have children that are underweight at birth.

In general, smokers have shorter life spans because of all the diseases that are aggravated or caused by the addiction. Another study found that cognitive-behavioral therapy aimed at changing attitudes about weight promotes smoking cessation by women. Even if we compare their stats with men, we’ll be surprised to know that the guys who smoke are one out of every three. However, while smoking as well as smoking-related deaths from such diseases as lung cancer have been falling in men, they have been increasing in women. Smoking, in fact, takes a greater toll on the health of women than men; a smoking woman loses, on an average, 15 years of her life while a smoking man loses just over 13 years.

In the first half of the 20th century, lung cancer in women was extremely atypical. In addition to that smoking wasn't very ubiquitous. Unfortunately, that soon changed when the tobacco industry started targeting women. In 1964, the first Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health was released and it became clear that smoking was a deadly habit which engulfed 45 percentages of women all over. A media campaign followed and smoking rates began to fall, as did tobacco industry profits. But the rates declined more in men than women; the tobacco industry had started their own media campaign, once again marketing directly to women.

Lung Cancer

By 1987, lung cancer had outdone breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. Today, more women die each year from lung cancer than breast cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancers combined. In fact, lung cancer among women is now considered a scourge, killing almost 75,000 in the US last year. Women appear to be more vulnerable to lung cancer than men, and they tend to get it at younger ages.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

• Shortness of breath
• Fever with an unknown cause
• Hoarseness
• Chest pain
• Wheezing
• Coughing up blood
• Chronic cough
• Weight loss & loss of appetite
• Repeated bouts of bronchitis or pneumonia

Other Smoking influenced Diseases in Women

While lung cancer might be the most lethal disease caused by smoking, it's not the only one. Smoking doubles the risk of having a heart attack, and increases the risk of dying from a heart attack within the first hour. This is an especially serious problem for women since women are more likely to die after a first heart attack than men. Women who use birth control pills; and smoke are at especially high risk of having a heart attack.

Smoking also increases the risk of other cancers, including breast, uterine cancer, bladder and oral cancer. Smoking also increases a woman's risk of low bone density and osteoporosis.

Smoking-Related Disorders in Women

• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Lung cancer
• Emphysema
• Oral cancer
• Uterine cancer
• Breast cancer
• Bladder cancer
• Rectal cancer
• Colorectal polyps
• Osteoporosis
• Infertility
• Early Menopause
• Miscarriages
• Stillbirths

Family Matters

Smoking is not just bad for women; it's bad for their families and future families as well. Smoking can cause infertility in women. If a woman becomes pregnant, smoking increases her risk of miscarriages, stillbirths and premature births. Mothers who smoke during pregnancy are also more likely to have babies with asthma, sleeping disorders and chronic ear infections than non-smoking mothers. The menstrual cycle phase has an effect on both mood and tobacco withdrawal symptoms for women trying to quit smoking -- a finding that clearly suggests that women could improve their success rate simply by starting their quit attempt during certain days of their cycle.

Cosmetic and Other Considerations

Ironically, teens and young women often think smoking is sexy and glamorous. However, the consequences — such as stained fingers and teeth, tooth loss, gum disease, bad breath — are anything but sexy and glamorous. Smoking also hastens the aging process most likely because of its adverse effect on estrogen. It can cause early menopause, facial wrinkling, and permanent voice lowering and urinary incontinence.

Old Habits Die Hard

Women and girls are not only more susceptible than men to the negative consequences of smoking; they are more likely to become addicted to cigarettes even when smoking comparable amounts.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to a man…and woman. Researchers are studying gender differences in smoking behavior and working to develop treatment plans that will help more women end their nicotine addiction. In fact, nicotine is considered more addictive than heroin or cocaine. And nicotine is more addictive for women than men.

The highly addictive nature of nicotine is a major reason why most people have difficulty quitting smoking, and women have a harder time quitting than men. Another thing that makes quitting difficult for women is the weight gain that, unfortunately, often accompanies quitting smoking. On the other hand, the weight gain, which rarely exceeds five pounds, can be reversed by a healthy diet and exercise.

More importantly, quitting smoking can also reverse many of the deadly consequences of the habit.

Weighing the Benefits

A woman who stops smoking reduces her risk of stroke to pre-smoking levels. Within a year, her smoking-related risk of heart disease drops by 50 percent. After three years, the risk of a heart attack is no greater than for a woman who never smoked. Within five years, her smoking-related risk of heart disease can disappear altogether. Clearly, the benefits of quitting outweigh the possibility of any weight gain. So think again...Are we going the right way?

About the Author:
Chris Read is an associated editor to the website http://www.hateweight.com “The Weight Loss Portal”. This is not very far from the truth. At the same time, it is also true that there are ways to stop smoking that ensure no weight gain will occur. How to avoid weight gain when you kick the habit is in fact the best stop smoking tip anyone can give you.

It is a fact that smoking is a calorie-burning activity. It is proved that a chain smoker who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day will burn at least 200 calories in a day. That is the reason why a person who indiscriminately gives up thinking will actually gain weight as soon as he or she gives up the habit. This weight gain will not be apparent in mild smokers, but if the person is a heavy smoker, then indeed the augmentation in weight will be clearly visible.

There is a very justifiable reason why stopping smoking can make you gain weight. In most old techniques of smoking cessation - which are being practiced even today - smokers were actually exhorted to eat or drink something whenever they had the smoking urge. Eating and drinking does help to curb the urge to smoke. But the plan would always cause its repercussions. Firstly, smokers would eat things like potato chips and other snacks that would be calorie-building, or they would drink colas or coffees.

Needless to say, they would dramatically gain weight, though they would succeed to quit smoking. And, in some cases, the people would not be able to stop smoking but also get hooked on high-calorie foods, thus making it a double problem.

Thus, the most valuable stop smoking tip will be to give up smoking with a safe, tried and tested method, or else you will risk becoming obese and give an invitation to a host of diseases. Stopping smoking by indulging yourself in eating is not the solution. Many people are understanding this supplementary problem that might come up, and so they are leaning more and more on herbal remedies. Herbal stop smoking methods do something very important - they act as natural antidepressants and help the smoker to fight against the excessive cravings that may come on. As a result, the smoker is able to give up the habit without getting addicted to anything else.

The herbal solution for smoke cessation, SmokeRX, is one such effective stop smoking technique. It works completely and in itself, i.e. it does not stop the smoking habit by creating another. This is the way in which most herbal remedies are formulated nowadays.

Remember this stop smoking tip: use a naturally safe and logical method for your smoke cessation. There are hundreds of them out there, but you need to play safe so that you do not succumb to another addiction just when you have given up one.

Are you serious about quitting smoking? It also makes clots more likely to form in the blood vessels increasing the risk of potentially fatal changes in the heart beat.

- Those who are regular, long-time smokers have a 70% greater risk of death from coronary heart disease than non-smokers.

- 80% of new smokers are children and adolescents who are trying to copy a parent or other hero figure.

- Inhaling smoke is especially dangerous for children and unborn babies (pregnant women) and can lead to low birth weight babies, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, and middle ear infection.

Improve Your Health and Increase Your Life Span by stopping smoking

Many choose smoking to cope with stress, loose weight, because of poor self-esteem, or simply to fit in the friend's circle by looking 'cool.' Most of the first time smokers get their first cigarette from someone else or find it readily available in the house from a smoking parent. Here are some great reasons to stop smoking now:

- Smoking causes heart disease, which can lead to a heart attack.

- Your smoking can cause the same bad effects on your family and friends around you who don't smoke.

- Save money from not buying cigarettes - if you do the math, depending on how much you smoke, you are looking at couple of thousand dollars a year.

Getting Help

If you think you cannot do it with just plain will power and/or if you are a heavy smoker, get help before you start so you can successfully quit the habit.

- Check with your doctor first and see what course of action he/she recommends.

- Nicotine patch/pills/chewing gums are a great substitute.

- Try to quit along with a friend or a group.

- Visit a hypnotherapist to try aversion, or various other therapies

Would you play Russian Roulette? Cigarette smoking can cause you to die early and those who live close to you to inhale your smoke, thereby being put at risk of heart disease too - that alone should be reason enough to stop smoking. Let your friends and family live in a cleaner environment and have a healthier lifestyle - quit smoking today.

For a free e-book, more articles and information about heart disease please visit www.a1toparticles.com/heart.html
About the Author
Saul Peterson has suffered heart failure and disease for over 10 years - having numerous operations during this time - he knows heart disease first-hand

Top Ten Tips to Stop Smoking

Smoking cessation is an unpleasant experience from whichever side you look at it.

To end the habit successfully, one of the most helpful things you can do for yourself is to make a list of the reasons for quitting.
Then, when the craving for a cigarette hits, you can take your list out and look at your reasons for quitting. Oftentimes, the list of benefits will override your urge to smoke. First of all, deciding to stop smoking will improve your overall health. Oftentimes, you can reverse the bad health effects that cigarettes have had on your body when you decide to stop smoking and actually do it.

Your heart will work better, your nose and taste buds will work better, and you will even have increased endurance and stamina. Your lungs will even be able to breathe better which will make you feel better all around.
Secondly, your decision will halt the terrible damage caused to your body, enabling you to live longer. Think of the heartbroken children or family member you may end up leaving behind, should you die before your time.

The risk of heart attacks for smokers is often present. With most men suffering heart attacks in their forties and upwards, the situation often leaves fatherless children. The immediate reasons for quitting smoking are many.

Ex-smokers often find that their sense of taste and smell returns, not realizing that for many years, both senses were dulled and affected by cigarette smoking. There's also a point where ex-smokers realize that smoking smells awful and leaves their clothing with a lingering odor.

Many smokers who quit discover that they sleep better or generally have a better feeling, as if they'd suddenly found a boost of strength or energy they didn't have before.

The health of others is an important reason to stop. Many smokers do so in their own homes, exposing others and often children to dangerous second-hand effects of a cigarette habit. Ear infections, common in many children, have been linked to second-hand smoke.

In fact, one family that had a child suffering continuous ear infections noticed the issue halted abruptly after both parents stopped smoking indoors. Asthma in children can also be smoking-related, and since no young toddler with breathing problems is puffing away on a cigarette, smokers can be part of the cause.

Smoking has extremely harmful effects on the body and that is why you should want to stop smoking right away. One way to see the harmful effects is to wipe off a wall in your house to see the yellowy film that the smoke leaves behind.

Since secondhand smoke has been shown to be more dangerous, try to smoke outside if you simply cannot quit. This will save everybody else that you live with from the harmful effects.

Author Resource:- Mike Selvon's quit smoking portal has some more useful information on the reasons to stop smoking.
