Christmas Songs - The Messiah (Handel)

"The Messiah" was composed by an English man named George Frederic Handel. Handel composed this in the summer 1741. The text is taken entirely from the King James Version of the Bible. He repeatedly revised the version due to singers, background music to what we have today. The Hallelujah Chorus is one of the most famous of all his songs. Handel completed this wonderful work in 24 days.

"The Messiah" is about "the anointed one" Jesus Christ. It covers the prophecies concerning the Christ, the birth, miracles, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, and the end times with Christ's final victory over death and sin. "The Messiah" is still performed today in many church and concert hall at Christmas time.

Isaiah quotes one of the most famous lines in the Hallelujah chorus.

Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

From the Hallelujah Chorus Handel put it so correctly:

"Hallelujah for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign forever and ever. King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. Hallelujah!

Jesus Christ is the King over the whole earth and he shed his drops of blood to save us from our sins. Now the choice is ours to "Receive our King!"

Christmas story - The 1914 Christmas Truce

During the winter of WW1 on the battlefields, a Christmas miracle took place. The Germans had been in a fierce battle with both the British and the French. All sides were in muddy, man-made trenches 6' - 8' deep. The enemy trenches were close enough to hear one another with a no-man's land in the middle.

On Christmas Eve the Germans sent small Christmas trees to their soldiers and they put up their small Christmas trees with candles at the top of their trenches. The German soldiers began to sing, "Stille nacht, heilige nach," "Silent night." The British soldiers began to join in with the German soldiers singing, "Silent night."

A German soldier on the opposite side of the British soldiers' trenches held up a sign saying, "You no fight, we no fight" and some Germans in broken English said, "We no shoot if you no shoot."

The British soldiers responded by holding a sign in the air saying, "Merry Christmas" and then a British soldier shouted, "Merry Christmas."

All the soldiers from the German, English and French sides came out of their trenches into no mans land where they shook hands with one another, exchanged Christmas greetings, gifts from home and smokes. On Christmas morning each side went out and helped each other bury their dead and remove their wounded safely into their own trenches. They also sang more Christmas carols and played a game of soccer in no man's land between them. Some of the enemy soldiers exchanged their addresses to see one another after the war.

This truce went on for a fortnight and the soldiers were friendly with each other. Their generals weren't happy with this and ordered them to shoot at each other again. The soldiers spent a few days wasting rounds of ammunition shooting at the stars in the sky instead of shooting the enemy soldiers in their trenches across the field. The military eventually transferred some of the soldiers to other areas to fight.

For a few moments there was peace on earth and good will toward men. Soldiers stopped fighting in WW1 after hearing a Christmas song, "Silent night." For those short moments a miracle took place which brought all the opposing enemy soldiers to a complete halt in remembrance of God's son!

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manager.

And suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men. (The Holy Bible; Luke 2: 11-14)

On Christmas Eve the truce brought all the enemy sides to a remembrance of their God so that they no longer had a disposition to fight with one another. May we all be touched by that miracle and by the remembrance of the birth or Our Lord and Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, the greatest man who ever lived on this earth, who is touching lives now just as he did then and from the beginning of time.

This story is based on the true facts of soldiers that participated in this wonderful event! A few truces happened during WW1. A movie was made to tell people about this marvelous miracle that transpired in the First World War also several books have been written. The movie is called "Joyeux Noel" and it is at movie rental stores in the foreign movies section. It is a must see for everyone and also shows actual events and letters in the extra section of the DVD. The DVD has English speaking in it.

Christmas Gifts - The 4 Weeks of Christmas

Every Christmas my family would become Christmas angels for our family tradition.
About 5-6 weeks before Christmas came we would gather around as a family and decide which widow, family we would like to become Christmas angels too that year. We would write an anonymous letter to that person telling them that we have selected them for "The 4 Weeks of Christmas" and that over the 4 weeks of December once a week we would visit them leaving a gift from their Christmas Angels. We would mail the letter to them or drop it in their mail box before December started so they knew we were coming. We won't tell them what day or time so that they would be surprised.

Next we would go to the store and pick out some small Christmas gifts, candy, ornaments or bake cookies, etc. We would wrap the gifts up and put a small note with each one of the gifts. I've included the little verses that we used so feel free to use them with your "4 Weeks of Christmas."

Each week we and the children would pick one night to go and drive up to their house. We would all be hiding behind trees, cars, etc and one of the children or us would go up to their home and leave the gift on the doorstep and knock or ring their door bell and then run quick for shelter to hide so that they won't see us. We enjoyed seeing their faces as they opened the door and saw their gifts week after week. It was lots of excitement especially trying not to be caught. By the fourth week the people were just as anxious to catch us and see who we were but we never did get caught in all the years that we did "The 4 Weeks of Christmas."

This activity brought our family many years of excitement and fun and taught our children the spirit of giving (even if it's only cookies). Our family has many fond memories from being Christmas angels.

Setting:

Gym has absolutely no decorations in the room.
Tables that are set up around the gym with no table cloths or any centerpieces.

The stage has plain undecorated Christmas trees on to look like a forest setting.
White sheets can be draped in front to look like snow.
A few sacks stuffed with newspaper and a few gift wrapped boxes at the open end to look full of gifts and presents.

The Program begins at 5pm or 6pm and Follow with the “Who-Ville Feast” or feast first and then do the skit first. Adjust it or have no food just a play with the Grinch.

Program
Skit:

Narrator 1 and 2 can be on opposite sides of the stage.

Narrator 1:
“You will recall from Dr. Seuss’s holiday “horror” story, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas, that the devilish Grinch determined to rob Who-Ville of every treat. In a nefarious scheme in which the Grinch dressed as Santa himself,” (a)

Lights go on the stage to view the Grinch in his Santa suit or the Grinch in his Santa suit enters the stage.

Grinch:
He goes onto the Left side of the Stage. He looks at the sacks of presents and he laughs sincerestly.

Narrator 1:
“he moved through Who-Ville taking every package, tree, ornament, & stocking!” (b)

Grinch takes toys, etc out of his sack of gifts and throws them into the audience while the audience sings the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch".

Narrator 1: Will the audience please sing the song "Your a Mean one Mr. Grinch"

Grinch continues to interact with the audience by throwing toys, rubbing an audience person's hair etc to the end of the song.

Pause….
“Three thousand feet up the Grinch looks down at Who-Ville.” (c)

Grinch:
Grinch- looks down at the audience.
Pause…
He then says laughingly: “Pooh-Pooh to the Who’s!” (1)

Grinch - slowly & expressively says while he paces back and forth across the stage,
“They’re finding out now that no Christmas is coming. They’re just waking up!”(2)

Grinch - stops suddenly and points his finger into the air and says,
“I know just what they’ll do!” (3)

Grinch - pauses for a minute like he’s thinking and then says to the audience,
“Their mouths will hang open a minute or two.” (4)

Grinch - then laughs and loudly says, “Then the Who’s down in Who-Ville will all cry Boo-Hoo!” (5)

Noise
Back of the stage a loud noise is made by banging some stick or something to make a loud, “Bang”

Grinch:
He laughs and says: “That’s a noise!” (6)

Grinch - pauses and puts his hand to his ear and then says,
“That I simply Must hear!” (7)

Narrator 2:
(Expressively said) - “So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear.” (8)
Grinch - pauses and then puts his hand to his ear.

Narrator 2:
“And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.” (9)

Grinch - acts like he’s hearing a noise.

Narrator 2:
(Softly to louder) - “It started in low. Then it started to grow…” (10)

Narrator 1:
(Expressively) – “But the sound wasn’t sad! Why, this sound sounded merry! It couldn’t be so! But it Was merry! Very! (11)

Grinch – Looks down the stage to the audience in the gym.

Narrator 2:
(Expressively) “He stared down at Who-Ville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook!” (12)

Grinch:
He starts shaking his body.

Narrator 2:
(With strong emotion) “What he saw was a shocking surprise!” (13)

Narrator 1:
(Slowly) “Every Who down in Who-Ville, the tall and the small, Was singing!”(14)
Pause…and then expressively say:
“Without any presents at all.” (15)

Narrator 2:
“Would the audience please stand, hold hands, sway and sing, “Welcome Christmas.”

Pianist & Chorister:
Song: “Welcome Christmas.” (16)

Narrator 1:
(Expressively) He HADN’T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same! (17)

Narrator 2:
“And the Grinch with his Grinch – feet ice cold in the snow,” (18)

Grinch:
The Grinch looks down at his feet and shakes his head.

Narrator 2:
“Stood puzzling & puzzling.” (19)

Grinch:
The Grinch shakes his head and points his finger onto the side of his head like he’s thinking and says:
“How could it be so?” (20)

Pause and then slowly continue:
“It came without ribbons! It came without tags! It came without packages, boxes or bags!” (21)

The Grinch then starts to pace back & forth across the stage and looks like he’s thinking.

Narrator 1:
“And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.” (22)

Grinch:
The Grinch rubs his head while narrator 1 says his line above.

Narrator 1:
“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!” (23)

Grinch:
The Grinch puts his finger up into the air while narrator 1 says the line above.

The Grinch looks at the audience and says slowly and expressively:
“Maybe Christmas,” (24)

Narrator 2:
“he thought,” (25)

Grinch:
“doesn’t come from a store.” (26)

Pause…slowly say:
“Maybe Christmas…” (27)

Pause…
“perhaps…” (28)

Grinch cont’d:
“means a little bit more!” (29)

Lights
Stage lights turn off. It goes dark for a min.

Nativity
Below the stage on the right side place a chair and Mary sits on the chair, Joseph standing beside her. The baby Jesus is in a manager in front of them.

Lights
A spot light or lights shine onto Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus.

Narrator 1:
“Luke 2: 6-7, ‘And she brought forth her firstborn son & wrapped him swaddling clothes, & she laid him in a manager.”

Narrator 2:
“Will the audience sing the 1st verse of ‘Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains.”

Song: “Far, Far Away on Judea’s Plains” 1st verse

Narrator 1:
“But except for Heavenly witnesses, these three were alone: Joseph, Mary, the baby to be named Jesus.” (d)

Enter the nativity scene:
4 Shepherds go to Mary, Joseph & baby on the west side while narrator 2 speaks these words below. Some kneel down and look at baby Jesus.

Narrator 2:
“Shepherds would soon arrive & later…” (e)

Pause while shepherds go to the nativity and then say:

“Please sing the 1st verse of “What Child is This.”

Song: 1st verse of “What Child is This”

Enter:
3 Wise men come from the EAST side of the Room to Mary, Joseph & Baby Jesus while Narrator 2 speaks the words below. Each wise man takes his turn and places a gift in front of Jesus.

Narrator 2:

Pause while wise men place gifts in front of Jesus.

“We will now sing the 1st verse of ‘We Three Kings’”

Grinch:
He goes back onto the left side of the stage near the undecorated trees.

Grinch:
The Grinch moves his hand back and forth to his heart while narrator 1 speaks about his heart in words above.

“Grew three sizes that day!” (31)

(slowly) “Welcome Christmas! Bring your cheer!
Cheer to all who’s far & near!
Christmas Day is in our grasp!
So long as we have hands to clasp!

Other Suggestions you could do are:
1. Families could dress up like “Who-Ville” characters if they want and could win a prize for the best costumes. Best Cindy-Lou Who, Grinch, Max etc.

2. Please feed your family some light snacks before they come so they can sit through the Program and still have room to eat our “Who-Ville Feast” following the Program.

3. We could follow dinner with some Grinch crafts for the children. In the Primary Room set up several “Who-Ville” table stations. Parents and the other couples can socialize in the gym while children are doing their crafts.

4. At 5pm upon arrival you have on the empty tables with The Grinch Quiz (online the Grinch site) with pencils on for people to answer the questions.

5. After the program ends you could have the members “Table Decorating Contest.” Each group at the table will go to the kitchen or assigned room to pick up a table cloth, plastic forks, cups, plates, etc and they have to decorate their own tables. They bring from home a box of centerpieces, etc. to make their table festive.

A couple can judge the tables and a small prize is given to each person at the table example a box of chocolates to be passed around to the people at the table.

Prizes are for “The Best overall Table”
“The Most original Table”
“Most festive Table”
“The Most “Who-Ville looking Table,” Etc.

I want to honour all soldiers and veterans now and from the past for the work that they do and have done for all our lives as they have touched so many lives by what they do and have done for generations. Let us all remember them in the Memorial services around our countries by attending them or at least thinking about these brave people and the courage and honour that they all deserve

Honour to all the veterans of all wars I'd like to honour my Uncle Ed Evans and Uncle Wes McQueen who joined the military in WW11 to fight for our freedoms. I honour my Uncle Robert McQueen who served in WW11 through Europe to come home physically untouched and drowned shortly afterward his arrival home.

Honour to one of my family member veterans tonight Thomas Bradley I wanted to honour my great Uncle Thomas Bradley who was Gassed in France during WW1. My mother said that he carried a cough all his life, forever coughing. You couldn't help feeling sorry for him. He was one of the many that had to live his life forever changed after the war.

I wish to pay tribute and honour right now to my great grandfather Alfred Jackson. He left Bolton, Lancashire, England with his wife and 4 daughters around 1911 and came to Canada to live. Shortly after WW1 broke out Alfred Jackson enlisted in the Canadian Reserves and the Canadian army took all the Reserves because of the total number of casualties from the regular army and sent the Reserves over to Europe to fight.

Alfred Jackson was shipped to England his homeland Oct 10, 1915 four years after he came to Canada and was then sent to a military base in France on Mar 14, 1916. He arrived at his military unit Mar 15, 1916 and then he was sent into battle to fight. He was killed in action by an enemy shell Mar 25, 1916.

Alfred Jackson died 11 days after his arrival into enemy battle. Alfred's wife Annie and his mother Elizabeth Jackson from England received these medals to honour him. They were given the Canadian Memorial Cross GRV, the Memorial Cross GVIR & the Memorial Cross ER11 for the sacrifice that he made dying for his country and for world peace.

Annie was left a widow with 4 children in a new country to provide for herself and her children. I wish to pay honour to them all for what they had gone through for all of us.

I wish to pay a tribute to my father Cecil (Mac) McQueen who fought in WW11. My father, his parents and siblings left Belfast, Ireland to come to Canada in 1920. They suffered great loss coming to Canada during the depression times. There was no work because of the great Depression so when WW11 broke out a lot of men joined in the military so they would they would have jobs.

Cecil McQueen joined the Army to fight for his country and freedom Aug 15, 1943. He was sent to England Feb 24, 1944. Cecil was sent into France Aug 6, 1944 where he was shot and wounded Aug 28, 1944. His right leg was wounded so he was sent to a military hospital to treat his wound and he was later discharged Oct 16, 1944 and put back into the front lines to fight again. He was promoted to Sargent Oct 27,1944

Cecil was promoted again to Corporal after Jan 7, 1945 and then he was wounded again Mar 3, 1945 by a machine gun that left his left leg hanging by the bone. He crawled back into the trenches where he lay until the soldiers coming to take the dog tags off the dead found him alive and had him flown back to the military hospital to be treated. After that flight my father would never fly again his entire life.

My father was eventually sent back to Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he spent the next 2 yrs in Christie Military Hospital being treated for his left leg wound by the machine gun where the Doctors tried to save his left leg but eventually the gangrene caused them to have to amputate Cecil's left leg. My father being an athlete this killed a part of his spirit as did some of the civilian employer's he had after the war that wouldn't give him a raise or employment as they said to him that he was only half a man. This is how my father was treated after his service for his country and for sacrificing for our rights, liberties and our freedoms. I never seen my father ever cry until he came home from the employer or prospective employer after they told him this. They truly broke his spirit after what he suffered there during the war and now back in civilian life.

My father was awarded these Canadian medals: The Italy Star for serving in Sicily or Italy, The France and German Star for serving in France, Belgium, Holland or Germany ( I know for sure my father was in France and Belgium but his Military papers don't state the last wound location and most soldiers don't talk to much about their experiences in battle); The Defense Medal for serving over 6 months in Britain; The C.V.S.M Medal for volunteering and serving honorably for eighteen months; The War Medal for military service from 1939-1945.

I love you Papa and miss you and still remember you Papa. Papa (Cecil Mac McQueen) died Oct 12, 1998. I want to pay tribute to my father for what he done for me, my family and for the many people's lives that he touched. May you rest in peace to me you've always been a whole man!

Faith in God

On Sunday night we had a missionary cottage meeting at our apartment. Our ward Missionary Program has Cottage Meetings once every month or so where our new members of the church and people interested in learning more about the gospel of Jesus Christ come. The full time missionaries talked about FAITH.

They quoted from the Book of Mormon Alma 32:21

And now as I said concerning faith - faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therfore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen which are true.

Even though we can't see God he still exists and he loves us and cares about all of his children. He wants his children to learn about him and to become close to him. He wants us all to repent and to obey his commandments so that we can all live with him again.

We finished off our meeting with a game, prayer and refreshments. It was a spiritualy enriched meeting where all who attended where edified and uplifted by the Holy Spirit.

Make your own Halloween costumes - a Family Tradition

Quick and easy halloween costumes ideas are just in your clothes closets. I looked around the house and found an old red hoodie that I had and I went to Wal-Mart and picked up a few packages of white fake fur in the craft dept. I cut the strips of white fake fur into 2" strips and sewed them together to make long strips. I took the long strips pinned and sewed the strips around the bottom of the hoodie, the neckline and hood, the centre front strip of hoodie, as well as the bottom of the sleeves as in the picture of my husband.

We went to Value Village and picked up a dark wide belt and a pair of dark green fleece pants. We also found some green hands at Value Village under $10 that went well with the costume. I was able to find a Grinch mask online and ordered it.

My costume was a free cape without a hood that someone gave to me. I preferred to have a hood so I got a scrap piece of lace fabric 20" x 35" and sewed a gathering stitch to the bottom and pinned and sewed it to the cape collar. Then I sewed up the sides to create a quick and easy hood.

I went into my clothes closet and found a black skirt and a black blouse and wore it under my black cape. The long haired wig I picked up at Value Village for under $10 years ago.

The dog's collar I purchased at Dollorama for $1.00

None of our costumes cost much. All you need to do is look around your house first and see what you have available.

If you have 1 meter of black fabric you can look online to find an easy pattern to make a cape or take an old skirt that doesn't fit you any more and cut it diagonally down the front and centre of the skirt and sew on two ties close at the neck or use an old big broach to hold it together at the neck. I made a wise man cape this way from an old velvet skirt and it looks great.

If you can't sew or don't have much time get your old glue gun out and glue the fake fur onto the hoodie, embelishments, etc onto your costumes. You don't need to wash the costume anyways as you only need the costume once a year for Halloween and then it goes back into the closet for next year.

Look around your house and see what you can find and you can transform almost any of your old clothing into some fun and easy costumes. You can use your scissors too just cut away the fabric to make the clothing item look like what you want it too. The sky's the limit! Good luck at making some quick, easy and fun inexpensive costumes.

Every man, woman and child who lives on this earth can have an influence for good or for bad. Who we are or who we want to be makes all the difference. We are who we make ourselves to be.
If we as people think higher, good, positive, lofty thoughts and put off the bad, lower thoughts from our being we will accomplish more good and bless the lives of many people if we choose too. We will say good things and then we will do good things. Our positive choices and our good influence will radiate to all the people whom we meet. They will see us as the true person we truly are. Our inner beauty will show and radiate to all who truly know us, meet us or associate with us.
The same is true for the bad influences, bad or low thoughts that people have. We will have the same effects but in a bad way creating a negative influence. We can also radiate that bad, low ideals or influence upon others lives. All we have to do is look at some of the famous criminals in jail today. They started on the same path or journey in life that you and I did. They also made many choices over their lifetime which led them to where they are today. It was an accumulation of bad or low thoughts which took them down their road to where they are now.
We all have choices in this life of how we want to live and which way we want to go. We have to make good, right choices continually so that our good choices start taking us in the direction we want to go. We need to make the necessary changes in our lives so that we can end up where we want to be. Today is the first day of the rest of your life so you make the choice!

Believe - Positive Achievements

"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you." Matthew 17:30

As I was driving down the road I told my daughters this scripture and my youngest at the time listened. When were near a tree she said, "Move," and the tree never moved. Being young she didn’t grasp the full measure of this scripture. I tried to explain to her that a mustard seed was very, very small and if we had the faith of this tiny see we could do anything that all things are possible to those who believe. We need to believe and if we can believe than we can achieve what we are trying to do. I explained that our thoughts would make us or break us. If we just put our thought right on positive achievements we can accomplish what we want to in our lives.If we doubt ourselves or don’t believe in what we want to accomplish we won’t do it. Our self-talk will talk us out of what we’re trying to do or accomplish. If we listen to those negative thoughts in the back of our minds we will fail to accomplish anything in this life. We directly effect our future for good or for bad by the thoughts that we entertain in our own minds. We become whom we think we are and what we think about the most.

Only we can alter our own conditions and destiny by changing our thought patterns to a higher level of belief and by putting more positive thoughts into our minds. If we can and will do this there isn’t anything that we can’t accomplish at this time or in this place that we are at right now. We hold our futures in our thoughts and in our minds.
