What Happened to the Countdown??

Oh, I know you were all waiting on pins and needles for the countdown to continue, BUT it didn't! I got a terrible frog in my throat and he wouldn't get out. I coughed and sprayed and gargled--the whole gambit, but the slimy little creature stuck around through Christmas!!

So, needless to say, we had a very relaxing holiday week at our house. Eating chicken noodle soup, watching movies, and just enjoying the peaceful holiday. I want you to know the frog hopped out while I was sleeping and unfortunately for my dear hubbie, it jumped into his throat, hmmmm, well, I was taught to share.

Why don't we just move on to our New Year 2012!! Wow!! How did it get here so quickly? And I refuse to do resolutions each new year because they all start out the same and end up exactly the same. This year I'm planning to stay FOCUSED and trying to create some new pretties along the way . . . oh, look how pretty this is . . . it sparkles . . .

FOUR Days to Go!!

Oh, it is coming down to the wire. I hope you mailed your gifts today that need to get to parts unknown. Now that you have that out of the way, let's finish wrapping everything that you will need for this weekend.

Make a list of people who you want to remember with a little something.
Check your stash to ensure you have something for each person on this list.
Make a list of voids in your list; i.e., a name on the list, but nothing in the stash.
You know what you have to do next -- run to the store to pick up last minute items.
Hopefully, you have enough energy to finish your wrapping when you get home.

Now, don't stress too much, you can finish the wrapping tomorrow if need be. But be sure you have everything together when you are ready to wrap.

Tissue Paper
Wrapping Paper
Tape
Scissors
Ribbon and/or bows
Tags (you can make your own on the computer) & pen
Any decorative items you like to tie on the package for a little flair
Gift bags are always fun and easy!

Okay, get to work. Don't forget when you are finished to store everything in one location for future use. I have one of those large plastic tubs that holds everything. When I finish I put it all back and it goes downstairs on the shelf until I need it again. Yes, I even put a pair of scissors in there. They aren't that expensive any more and you will be glad to have them right where you need them.

Remember, just four more days to go so don't dilly dally now. Once you are finished, then you can have that coveted movie or book day!

Oy, FIVE more days to go!! I do hope you have been getting your wrapping finished. Okay, I know that I have some wishful thinking going on here when many of you haven't even finished shopping. Let's be honest, some of my friends are just getting started with their shopping. If you are in that same boat, then let me help you with a few last minute ideas from the handmade shops on Etsy. To start out I found this very cool little pendant (since I am an avid Potter fan, I couldn't pass this one up) in the Pretty Whimsical shop. Perfect for any of those teen/tween girls on that long list.

Now it is Sunday, and I think it should be a good day to finalize those lists, do some wrapping, and prepare any packages for mailing. Oh, you like to watch the football games as well?!?! Want to see what Tim Tebow does this week???? Okay, move your stash to the same room as the big screen and keep working on your list.

Do we have any procrastinators in the crowd?? I know I am notorious for that exact problem. I even have the gifts, but haven't gotten them ready to ship just yet. I have been busy shipping for everyone else though.

Who knew that the silk scarves were going to be so popular??? They do make luscious gifts for that hard to buy for person on your list. AND I gift wrap each and every one when it goes out. Let me help you get your item to that special person!! I'll even include a gift card from you.

These are just three of the new colors you will find in my shop for the 11" x 60" size hand painted silk scarves. I have many other colors so stop by my Etsy shop to discover the other colors.

Here is one of my larger scarves sized 18" x 72" that have been added by special request for the chemo patient. These scarves are longer, wider and just plain luxurious. I have them in several colors right now, but would be happy to make you whatever colors you desire. Just contact me with any special orders.

I now have a few hand painted silk ponchos that I absolutely LOVE!!! Anyone who knows me will testify that I love to wear the silk ponchos or ruanas everywhere I go!! I feel so pretty! Oh so Pretty! Oops, sorry, I was starting to sing. Here are two of the new ponchos; one in the Over the Rainbow color that has been so popular in the scarves and one Magnolia red and black poncho that will take a relaxed little black dress or black pant suit from day to a nice evening on the town!

Just 13 Days until Christmas?!?

It is that time of year again and everyone is starting to realize the date on the calendar. For those who celebrate the holidays it is a busy and hectic time. I, for one, do not have a clue if I have everything ready for the big day. I have been so busy working on items in my shop that I haven't really had time to worry about it.

I generally purchase goodies all year long so that I am fairly ready when the time comes, both financially and time wise! I remember when I used to get off work early on Christmas Eve and would run to the mall to finish my shopping. Oy vey! One year the electricity went out just when I gave my pile of gifts to the check out lady. Not good at all. Those were the days when they knew their customers and trusted them. She wrote it all down and said not to worry--so off I ran to do the wrap job and get the girls ready to go to Grandpa and Grandma's house.

Christmas Eve was always a special time with Grandpa and Grandma. The house was decorated and holiday music was playing. We always had a pot of chili and one of oyster stew (nope, I didn't even think of trying that one).

Grandma would put out all kinds of veggies, dips, cheese balls, crackers, sliced summer sausage, etc. It was definitely a party!
Then she always had platters of home-made candies. Hmmm, starting to understand the weight issue now.

Well, this year my family is all far from here and I need to ship my precious cargo to each one so they will have their stash in time for their own holiday festivities. You know I can't wait until the last minute now. I am wrapping and trying to get things together to ship, but I keep getting ideas for new jewelry pieces.

Today I decided to check out my stock of pottery shard pieces to create some treasures with them. They always make nice gifts. Look what I came up with utilizing a couple:

Purple Faceted Agate

I love purple so I started with this one. I am even including the earrings with the necklace. It turned out so nice that I wonder if I should wrap it for one of my gifts to send.

Pink & Purple Stones

Well, since I was in the purple mood, I found these great hot pink and purple multi-colored pieces that looked great with this pottery shard.

I like the history behind the potter shards. I have been told by my supplier that the Chinese people dig around in the old ruins of the pottery factories and find these pieces. They then wrap them with the metal and prepare them for sale. I think it is nice to have a piece of history. And who said you couldn't have something from the Ming Dynasty??

These rich colors made me drift to the Amazon and the jungles for a little safari. They are both similar, but the stones are a little different.

Relaxing in Orlando!

Both of my girls, Shilo and Tara, live in Orlando, Florida; which is so far away from Colorado and me. So, I am on my yearly trek to Florida to visit the girls.

I must admit that it was a refreshing change to land here when I left snow on the ground and my tree limbs in the yard!

So far, we have had lovely weather--even on the rainy day--we relaxed and read. We ate at a few restaurants taking advantage of the outdoor areas the most.

We took one day to visit one of my Unique Women in Business friends and her daughter, Danielle and Renee, at Renee's animal compound. Now that girl LOVES cats!! Here is just one of her darlings, Diva:

Just like everything, good things must come to an end . . . so I bid farewell to my sweet girls and their beloved pets to return home to conquer the cold, dry air in Colorado. I have been busy catching up on orders and shipping treasures to some anxious brides.

As most of you know, I lost a dear friend, Sande Fuqua, to breast cancer so this cause is very important to me. Kady's Pet Couture has made pink ribbon dog and cat collars to remind people about breast cancer awareness. For each collar sold this month, we will donate $2 to the Breast Cancer Awareness foundation. Help us fight this dreaded disease!!

Life in Greeley continues . . .

Spiders, Jack-O-Lanterns, Fall Colors, Skulls & Crossbones

This weekend was the Greeley Tribune Art & Craft show at Island Grove. Although the weather refused to cooperate, we still had a nice turnout. Certainly not fair weather shoppers since we had a dip in temperature and received a wonderful, albeit chilly, rain to quench any Autumn thirst the plants and trees may have.

Kady's Pet Couture was set up in full holiday spirit. We offered many choices for those Diva pets in your household. We continued on the college theme by adding the Nebraska Huskers, as well as some lovely UNC Bears items. So cute and very popular this time of year. We even had some Bronco collars, although our Broncos lost their game, a true fan will continue to wear the blue and orange.

Since October is National Breast Cancer awareness month we have a special Pink Ribbon fabric, which also has some lucky Lady bugs on it, with some pretty pink bows to which I also added a generous spattering of sparkles to create the special look we were after. For each Pink Ribbon collar sold this month, we will donate $2 to the Breast Cancer research fund.

I Am HOME!!!

I am home from my journeys to Kansas and back, times two; once for the Art in the Park in Garden City, Kansas; and back again for the Whimmydiddle in Scott City, Kansas.

The weather was absolutely beautiful for both weekends and the turnout was awesome. I enjoyed seeing so many past customers and meeting many new ones.

Art in the Park

The Garden City event was paired with the Downtown Fall Fest, so we had activities galore. They had a car show, boxing matches, art every where; just to name a few. I was lucky enough to be next to a graffiti artist who did a demonstration during the day.

He wrapped tons of cellophane around two large trees to create a canvas on which to work. He then used his spray cans to create this work of art. I believe it contains his signature, but wait until you see the other side!

This was the other side of the cellophane canvas. Awesome! He is quite the artist and it was so mesmerizing to watch him work. Too bad many of them have to work in the dead of night to create their art.


Garden City

I had a great day in Garden City, then rushed home to ship orders and create new items for the next weekend.

Whimmydiddle in Scott City

The Whimmydiddle usually has at least 10,000 people during the one day. They travel from all over the surrounding states to attend this one day art and craft festival. I must admit that it was such a lovely day and there were so many people that I am sure they reached that number or may have actually surpassed it this year.

I added some on my hand painted silk in the form of scarves, ponchos, sconchos, shawls, and some ruanas (large capes). They were received quite well by the shoppers and my efforts were rewarded.

I also unveiled the newest line of handmade dog collars from the shop that Kathy Kaberline and I have opened: Kady's Pet Couture. We currently have dog collars and cute little cards, but will soon have leashes and cat collars, in addition to whatever else our little minds come up with--bird toys for sure.

Since we were in the great state of Kansas, we offered a few select K State collars and also included KU. They were very popular with these folks. They certainly do embrace the Beach Boys' song: "Be True to Your School."

Beyonce was a great model for the collars (of course, you can't see her grandpa standing there with a treat in hand). You have to know that there will be plenty of animal print with me involved.

It was a lovely trip with great weather, energetic shoppers, talented artists, and special time spent with family.

Garden City Art in the Park

I have been selected to show at the Art in the Park event in Garden City, Kansas again this year. I hope to see many of my past customers as well as meeting many new ones. This one is similar to a necklace I posted in my shop, but it lasted a day and was gone, so I created another one in the same vein. This pendant is gorgeous with an aquamarine stone that coordinates well with the African Opals.

Bridesmaids for Fall

I just finished another order for a little bride planning to be married in Key West later this Fall. She has selected some beautiful pieces that I would like to share with you.

She is having a persimmon strapless dress for each bridesmaid and selected these necklaces for them to wear. Brown, tan, and ivory colored glass pearls all mixed with various crystals in tan and copper colors create a lovely blend of warm colors. The earrings are always included for free with the purchase of a selection of bridesmaid jewelry.

I love her choices and wanted to share this with you. She will send us a finished picture of the big day! Personally, I believe I should actually head to Florida and visit Key West to ensure all jewelry is worn correctly, don't you???

Good Guys Car Show - Rocky's Ride

How many of you have attended the Good Guys Car Show?? It happens every year and it actually happens in several locations across the United States by the Good Guys Rod & Custom Association. This show is also called the Colorado Nationals for the Loveland, Colorado location. My brother, among many other car buffs, prepare for this event for an entire year. I have attended this event with him for a total of three years and it never ceases to amaze me when I see everything these people go through for this big event.

These avid automotive buffs will spend hours and hours in their shops trying to get their chosen vehicles back to pristine condition. Well, most of them do, some actually surprised me with their vehicles; but we will get to that later.

I believe I read that the newest year for a vehicle to be included in this show was 1972. So, for many of us, it was like taking a step back in time; back to high school or back to the old movies we used to watch. I have taken a few pictures and will share some of these with you.

First, I need to let you know that the 'secret room' clean up did happen and Rocky, my brother, had a nice place to sleep--I may post pictures of the finished room later. He needed a nice relaxing place to rest each night because this was a very busy four days for us. Thursday started with check in and then a big cruise and party at the famous Pinkee's Rod Shop. Pinkee's has been featured on TV many times for some of his million dollar paint jobs.

There are many of these auto buffs who have the money and pay big bucks to get their vehicles brought back to life. Then, there are just as many that build these vehicles from rusted out junkers. My brother is one of the home built editions. He is big into 1955 vehicles and brought his '55 GMC pickup this trip.

It's all about the display, by the way, show cars are just like our art shows! Check out the engine.

Flames on the air filter, on the engine, on the oil cap, etc. The theme is consistent throughout.

The infamous Rat Fink travels with Rocky to all the shows. This is the battery cover that he built and painted. Notice the model truck on top painted to match the life size original. Did I mention flames?

Special seat covers were made with red flame stitching to match. I think there is a theme going on here.


Home built trailer

He has a home built trailer that he has painted to match the truck. Now, come on, you can't pull a trailer behind that doesn't match, right? Just wait until you see the bed of the trailer.


Rat Fink

My brother was trained as an 'authorized' Rat Fink painter and has the beloved Rat Fink on many items to keep the theme going. Rat Fink was originally painted by the legendary painter, the late Ed Roth. His cartoons continue to be published in each Good Guy magazine.


Scooter

Rocky's scooter is painted to match the rest of the items--have I mentioned flames yet?? Oh, you haven't seen anything. The next post will cover all the various flames I found at the show. To stay within the theme of this event, my friend and I made some flame dog collars for the buffs to make sure their pooches were matching their paint jobs.

The Etsy Twitter Team features a different member each week to be in the spotlight. This week is Pretty Whimsical and I must admit that I just want to order one of everything when I peruse her shop. She has such wonderful little scrabble tile pendants and she has made something that will be a perfect gift for each and every one of your friends.

I spent the day outside today--the entire day for the first time this year--and I am once again enthralled with Mother Nature and her wonders. When I shopped through the Pretty Whimsical shop I found some gorgeous pieces that reminded me of nature and the great outdoors.


Bee Collage

I found this gorgeous collage featuring a bee and the illusion of a honey comb and many flowers. This piece comes in an organza bag and is ready to slip on to a ball chain and is only $7.95. That is a great price for such a work of art.

Hummingbird Pink Flower

Next I found an adorable little hummingbird with it's little beak stuck in a pink flower. The hummingbird and flower are vivid colors with a really nice antiqued background that truly makes the foreground pop with color. Again the price is right.

Day at the Beach

My last selection was a tough one to make. In keeping with the nature theme I found some Koi fish in a pond, more birds, bees, etc., but finally settled on the beach picture for those of you near the shores. Just a wonderful way to spend the day!!

Memorial Day

Many of us observe Memorial Day in different ways. For some it is just an extra day off of work, another one of those beloved "holidays" when you don't have to work. For many it is a day to remember their loved ones who passed before them. Originally, this holiday was set aside to celebrate and remember the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces.

Many referred to this day as Decoration Day because of the long tradition of placing flowers at the loved ones graves. The graves of the fallen soldiers are marked with the American flag to remind us of the price paid to preserve our freedom.

The red poppy has become noted as a source of pride to wear and a way to raise funds for the benefit of service people in need. This tradition was influenced largely by the poem written by Moina Michael.

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

The red poppy can still be seen today being worn by many people, thanks in part, to the VFW as they have set up a program for disabled veterans to make and sell them.

Many family traditions have been set in stone for years with the children trying to maintain the customs set by their parents and grandparents. My mother lost her mother to cancer when she was just five years old. The family of five children ranging in age from one to nine was taken to care for by the grandmother. Now that must have been one strong woman!

Her grandmother taught them many loving things, but one tradition my mother and her sisters remain ever vigil about is the Memorial Day tradition. The families all looked forward to this holiday. All the aunts and uncles with their many children would return to the home town to commemorate their loved ones.

The children would pick wildflowers and make bouquets for the graves. They all had new clothes, handmade by Grandma, and new shoes. Grandma would cook for several days getting food ready for the holiday. Every family member’s grave would receive flowers and various other items made by the children. Family members who served in the armed forces received a small flag to designate their past service.

This turned out to be a memorable time for the families and a way to have a family reunion of both living and deceased. One aunt would line the children up and say, “Let me see how big you have gotten.” Little things like this become entrenched in your memory and help us to retain some of the life that was.

My aunt still lives in the home town and has officially taken on the role of ensuring that each and every family member’s graves are decorated with flowers. The long tradition of the family get together is no longer carried on as families grow and move away, but the love instilled by the grandma is still strong in the sisters.

My father passed away this past summer and my mother was terribly concerned that he have flowers on his grave for this holiday. I made sure I went to the cemetery armed with flowers, scissors, water, and a camera. He was a 32° Mason and the Masonic Lodge had already placed a flag on his grave by the time I arrived.

The entire place with alive with the sweeping array of color across the green expanse of grass. Large American flags lined the drive way into the gardens and little canopies were set up at designated intervals around the drive. They had chairs, umbrellas, water, coffee, popcorn (yes, a very cool popcorn machine), and I even saw an ice cream truck. This place was ready to celebrate.

A HUGE American flag was standing on a side part of the garden with white chairs all lined up for the presentation set for Monday. Monday started with a flyover of F-16s from the Colorado Air National Guard and just the sound alone made your heart swell with pride.

The day was a glorious event meant to honor our soldiers and their families and I do believe they did an excellent job accomplishing this feat. This was a great way to say Thank You for our Freedom.

The Secret Room

Does everyone have a secret room? You know the one that you use to stash any extra 'stuff' when you are cleaning? The one with the extra closet when yours is packed way too full? The one that gets all the odds and ends until you have 'time' to decide what to do with it. It's the one that you don't allow anyone to wander into by accident. Gosh, I know I'm not the only one to have one; my friend told me she has one for sure.

My secret room is supposed to be a guest room, but if my husband helps me clean he puts any and everything that he can't figure out where it goes into my room. I also use it as my closet overflow and have turned it into my dressing room, complete with my vanity and various beauty aids.

Can you guess where I'm heading with this? I bet you can. Somehow, and it seems like overnight, this room has turned into a total disaster. I know I spend way too much time on my hobbies and having fun with my friends, but when did this room get so out of hand? Now for the worst part . . .

My brother is planning on attending the Good Guy car show with his fancy rebuilt (all by himself) 1955 GMC pickup truck, complete with red paint and flames. We have been planning this for a year now, so it is no surprise to me.

Rocky's Ride

Except this morning I looked around the room and thought, uh oh, Rocky is going to need a little room when he gets here. He truly isn't very needy, but come on, at least get the suitcases off the bed from the last trip we took.

So, today is the day. The day I roll up my sleeves to take on the deep, dark depths of the 'secret' room. If you never hear from me again, you will know I never found my way back out. But, just imagine all the cool stuff I might find when I'm in there!!!

Okay, now I'm supposed to have three boxes?? Is that right?? One to sell at a yard sale, one to toss, and one to donate . . . hmmmm, but what if I find something good that just doesn't fit in one of those boxes?? And why would I put stuff in a box if I'm just going to throw it away?? Oh, I think this organizing thing is just going to be too much for me to handle. I hear some crystals and beads calling me to the studio.

Just how much room does one guy need anyway?? He isn't bringing his wife so it is just one guy. No, I must be strong . . . I can do this! Let's see, I've got the boxes, some trash bags, dust cloth, furniture polish, vacuum, and a nice little glass of ice water. No excuses to leave once I get in there. I'll get the fresh sheets out once this room is ready. Oh, perhaps I'll get the camera for a before and after picture. Uh, no, I doubt I would let anyone see the before picture so why bother.

Oh look, I've been looking for this book, I am so anxious to read it; perhaps I have time for just one chapter, I can sit right here on the corner of the bed . . .

Hand Painted Silk Scarves

I have a new passion, well, don't know how new it is, I have always loved them. Now I am offering hand painted silk scarves in my shops and I love them!! They are so much fun! I keep offering more each week, but right now look at my treasures.


Great Barrier Reef

I do love blues and teals together. This gorgeous ocean blue and teal streaked scarf is hand painted and is 100% silk. Hand hemmed as well. The colors are so rich and true that they remind me of the Great Barrier Reef pictures I've seen. This is my way of going to a tropical locale.

Lovely mixture of blues, greens, and teals dripping into each other to create a picture for you to wear with your favorite outfit. Imagine this with a Winter White outfit!!

Over the Rainbow

This one has been so popular that I've had to go back into the studio repeatedly to recreate it. I personally love it because it will match absolutely anything you wear!! It has a little of this and a little that until it truly makes me think rainbow! One bride has asked for this in a sash and train for her wedding--I'll let you know how that turns out. Still cogitating that one.

Prim and Proper

I call this one the Prim and Proper because the royal wedding was in full swing and I could picture one of the Royals wearing it. The extraordinary part is one bride ordered these colors in a shawl for her mother to wear with her dress on the wedding day. I received her response when she opened her package: "The shawl was FABULOUS!!! My mom loooooved it and she can't wait to wear it with her dress!!! Thanks again!" It is so wonderful to hear from the recipients when they finally have their product in their hands. Hopefully, I will be able to get a picture of her on the special day.

Tropical Island

Hmmmm, I'm starting to see a theme here; does this mean I need to take a vacation to someplace warm and sandy with palm trees? Possibly. This one is called Tropical Island and now I'm thinking how about a nice wrapper or sarong type thing to tie around your waist over your suit. Yep, I'm really on a theme now. Okay, how about wearing this lovely scarf with your white pant/short/dress suit to the garden wedding or picnic this summer. See, I can get back to thinking more normally for the rest of us.

All the scarves are 11" x 60" and should be dry cleaned or hand washed in cold water. Low iron steam. But as you can tell, I am open to suggestions: need a shawl? a larger scarf? a poncho? a ruana (big wrapper, my personal favorite)? Contact me and let's use our imaginations together.

I even received a custom order for a goddess in Australia. She has goddess products and wanted the scarves to match her theme. I think the match turned out so well. Let me know what you think. Here's a couple:

The paper shows what she sent me to match. The scarf turned out luscious! And she loved them. She will be attending the Every Woman Expo at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre in Australia and will have these lovelies available.
