The word "fish" and the word "happiness" sound the same in Chinese. The Chinese often give living fish for the New Year to bring happiness in the coming year.

Fish also drive away misfortune, as it's one of the good signs in the Buddha's footprint. The image of a pair of fish is often embroidered on curtains, cushions, linen, and clothes. This amulet has a strong protective energy. In Thailand, children often wear these talismans on their necks (these charms are usually made of gold and precious stones).

The feng shui fish also have a strong reproductive function, so they symbolize fertility. These aquatic creatures swim happily in the water, and thus are a symbol of happiness and harmony in a couple.

The most popular species in feng shui are carp (koi), goldfish, and arowana. The amulets are available as figurines, paintings, scrolls, and pendants.

Goldfish can often be seen in ponds and aquariums, as they bring good energy. Goldfish represent double joy, because the Chinese word "goldfish" consists of two hieroglyphs - "gold" and "happiness". Goldfish symbolizes success in financial affairs, and it is well suited for the zone of wealth.

Carp is a symbol of good luck and military glory. The legend says that the carp became known for its prowess, when it swam against the tide to reach the dragon gate and became a dragon. Thus, it became a symbol of perseverance and tenacity. One of the popular paintings today is the painting "Carps passing through the gates of the dragon." The hieroglyph "carp" sounds like the word "business" in Chinese, so it will help achieve success in business. A carp shown in a pair will bring love.

Arowana is a rare fish that brings financial well-being; it's considered a particularly strong symbol of wealth. It should be pink, silver or gold. As a symbol of prosperity, you can hang an image of a golden arowana in the corner of wealth. Live fish are also a sign of abundance, and that's why so many people use feng shui aquariums. A feng shui fish aquarium can not only decorate your home, but also help you achieve prosperity and wealth. If you decide to start an aquarium, remember several important rules. When buying an aquarium, give preference to round or rectangular shapes. Put the aquarium in the east or southeast part of the living room or office. It's best not to put the aquarium in the bedroom or kitchen.

It's best to have an odd number of feng shui fish in the aquarium. The most favorable number is 9, such as 8 golden ones for prosperity and 1 black one for protection. The red is a solar Yan, and black is the lunar Yin. Together, they symbolize the unity and completeness of the universe.

It's best to avoid buying the species with sharp fins. If you decide to purchase arowana, note that this tropical specie is very sensitive to changes in water temperature and other conditions. Moreover, arowana will not live in the same tank with other species - it will eat them.

To attract wealth, you can activate your tank with wealth symbols, such as a money toad or ship with coins next to the aquarium. You can also hang Chinese coins on a red ribbon.

However, even with all its prosperous developments and high quality resorts, the tropical island nation faces a significant threat in the form of global warming, and is encouraging visitors to leave a positive impact when choosing an 'eco-holiday' in the Maldives.

The Maldives is recognised as a world leader in sustainable tourism, and is working hard to achieve its self-appointed goal of becoming completely carbon neutral by 2020. As a low-lying island nation where the land reaches a maximum height of only two metres (6.5 feet) above sea level, the Maldives is looking for support anywhere it can - and that includes travellers visiting the country for its unique offerings.

It's easier than you might think to make sure your impact on the Maldives is a positive one, with a number of sustainable hotels in major resorts helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Other resorts have dedicated themselves to planting thousands of new Banyan trees each year to replace those felled for construction purposes, and visitors on volunteering holidays can also help with local community projects. Many of these are dedicated to protecting the country against rising sea levels, and in exchange the volunteer can receive benefits, as well as the chance to enjoy a more authentic visitor experience.

That doesn't mean holidaymakers can't still enjoy the fantastic range of opportunities offered by a Maldives break, such as scuba diving in the crystal clear Indian Ocean to discover a staggering array of colourful tropical fish as well as sunken vessels, including the Maldives Victory Wreck. The Maldives is one of the world's leading diving destinations, and diving organisations are careful not to disturb any of the indigenous wildlife and coral reefs, with measures such as the Green Sea Turtle Conservation Program in place to ensure that diving activities do not threaten endangered species. Diving boats in popular resorts are also fitted with special engines to prevent the leakage of fuel, further preserving the unspoilt beauty of the island nation.

If you're taking holidays in the Maldives this year, you can take the time to investigate ways in which you could leave a positive impact on the country. Staying at an eco-friendly resort that actively supports sustainability schemes could go a long way towards preserving this unique destination for future generations.

And a heavy, longing sigh normally accompanies those thoughts.

Blue water isn't always readily accessible to divers who live in the mid-west, which accounts for a majority of those sighs of course. It's kinda tough to get away from the job for a scuba visit to the ocean sometimes.

But that desire to get wet is always with us, isn't it? From the first time we strap a tank on our back, and slap a mask over our eyes, we're already looking forward to our next dive outing as soon as our fins leave the water.

Many of us are addicted to diving, and we dread the possibility of our scuba skills seeking stagnation.
Ah, but we have our quarries - those rock-walled pits of cold water where we gather on weekends to talk about our most memorable diving adventures, and to immerse ourselves in that anti-gravity experience we call scuba.

Quarry diving only satisfies our basic cravings though. It's much different than diving in warm, clear water where you see for 50-feet in all directions, and your dive-buddy only needs wave a hand to get your attention.
Diving conditions on Sunday, 25 April 2009 brought those differences noisily to mind.

The day was beautiful with sunshine and temperatures above 80. I started sweating soon as I put my wet suit on. For a few moments I considered diving in only the shorty, and leaving the pants, hood, and gloves packed away. I didn't, and later was happy for that decision when I realized that my dive length would be shorter without that extra gear.

The water temperature at the surface dropped the thermometer to 63-degrees real quick, which wasn't so bad. That was still warm enough that I didn't feel cold, and it even made me more comfortable than I was in the air, sweating with the suit on.

I descended slowly to 20-feet and hovered for a moment letting the thermometer adjust, and getting a new temperature reading. At that depth I recorded 48-degrees.

This particular quarry doesn't get deeper than 23-feet except for one small hole that I once registered 25-foot in. For this dive my maximum depth was 22-feet.

When you're quarry diving you experience some extreme swings in visibility, depending on the time of year, weather activity, and the number of divers in the water.

Sediment from decaying plant life, and other runoff, layers the bottom of the quarry, and is rather thick in this particular dive spot.

Rain sets the sediment into motion and clouds the water, lowering visibility. Divers kick the sediment up when their fins create turbulence, sending clouds of muck flowing upward from the bottom.

This day a couple of visitors to the campground that adjoins this quarry were cruising around in a paddleboat, which stirred some sediment into motion also.

Because of all this activity the visibility, when there actually was visibility, reached no further than a foot-and-a-half.

Quarry diving is often solo diving because of the cloudiness of the water. Much of the time if you see your dive partner, you're bumping into him or tangling fins, which is usually your only indication that anyone is there.
No, visibility isn't always great, and if you feel nervous about diving alone maybe quarry diving isn't the most preferable activity. Still, if I can't make the trip to blue water, any time I have a chance to get wet, I jump in. It doesn't completely satisfy my addiction, but it helps.

I did see a couple of fish this day, but most of the dive I spent exploring gaps in the rocks, investigating mud.
Proper maintenance of tropical fish tanks involve doing some tasks that you have to accomplish daily, monthly, weekly, bi-annually, and yearly. Doing these regularly and diligently will ensure the good health of your fish and prevent major problems from occurring.

Daily schedule

The daily tasks involved in taking care of tropical fish tanks are simple. These are checking if your fish are complete and healthy, spotting and removing dead fish and dead plant matter, and examining the temperature readings of your heater and thermometer. The temperature readings should match. Otherwise, it could mean that there is something wrong with your heater.

You should also check the water level. If it has dropped, replace the evaporated water to prevent salinity and pH levels from fluctuating.

Weekly schedule

Every week, tropical fish tanks need to be cleaned and its water changed. Dirty decorations should be removed and cleaned, while live plants should be pruned and re-anchored. The tank walls should also be cleaned, and floating particles and gravel dirt should be siphoned out. After cleaning, remove 25% of the aquarium water. Replace it with new water but make sure that it is filtered, aerated, and dechlorinated first. The temperature of the new water should also be the same as with the water in the tank.

Monthly schedule

Tropical fish tanks need a more thorough cleaning every month. Aside from cleaning the tank's insides and the other weekly tasks, you will also need to clean the filter media and refill filter cartridges. You should test all aquarium equipment during this time. Do your monthly cleaning the same time as the water change. This way, you will be able to use the discarded water in cleaning the filter media. You do not have to clean the biological media. Only the mechanical and chemical filter media need to be cleaned. To finish your monthly maintenance, do some testing on the pH levels, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites levels.

Keep a record book of these testing results as well as any observation that need to be noted. This is for future reference in case a problem arises concerning water conditions or the health of your fish.

Bi-annual schedule The list of tasks you have to do twice a year mainly involves checking the equipment such as the pumps, filters, light bulbs, pipes, and protein skimmers to see if they need to be cleaned or replaced. Check the impeller of the pumps if it needs to be replaced. The insides of the intake and outlet pipes should be cleaned as well. It is advisable to change light bulbs at night as they will be cool to the touch during this time.

Stuff you will need

You will need the following when doing the cleaning and maintenance checks of tropical fish tanks: magnetic aquarium cleaners, algae pads, gravel vacuums, siphons, water changing tools, brushes, scrapers and scrubbers, tongs and gloves, and cleaning fluids. Be sure to use cleaning fluids that are specially made for cleaning fish tanks since ordinary dishwashing liquid is not advisable.
There are a few basic pieces of aquarium equipment you need to include in your aquarium setup to make sure that your fish will thrive

Filtration system
Filters are important to ensure the cleanliness of the water. A complete filtration system should have mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration. This way, not only visible dirt particles are removed but also other impurities such as toxins and odor are filtered out. You may achieve this by having one filter that performs all three functions. If you have a large tank, you will need at least two filters. Filters don't need to be costly as there are inexpensive ones that are reliable and effective.

Lighting
Aquarium lights are also important aquarium equipment. To avoid fish stress, poor growth, discoloration, and other ailments, you need to have sufficient lighting that replicates the light conditions in the fish's natural habitat. As your aquarium will most probably be placed indoors, you can give your fish "days" and "nights by controlling the lights. If you have live plants, aquarium lights will also help in making them grow healthy.

Aquarium heaters

To provide your fish with the temperature that is ideal to them, you have to install an aquarium heater. They usually come in two types: submersible heaters and heaters that you have to place inside your power filter or canister filter. Fish cannot produce their own body heat and are, thus, susceptible to illness when the temperature fluctuates during the day. Keep in mind that most aquarium fish come from the tropics so the water should normally be above room temperature.

Fish tank thermometer

While inexpensive, a thermometer is nevertheless an important aquarium equipment. A thermometer will provide you instant feedback for changes in temperature. There is a chance that temperature inside the aquarium is less than ideal. The thermometer will then tell you whether your heater is working properly or not.

Aquarium air pump

Another important aquarium equipment is the air pump. In large tanks, it provides aeration. It also increases water circulation and surface area to ensure gas exchange. An air pump is also used to power filters such as undergravel filters, box filters, and sponge filters and can power protein skimmers. It will make your fish tank look more alive when used together with action ornaments or bubbling air stones.

Fish tank decorations

Fish tank decorations serve both aesthetic and practical functions. Plants, driftwood, rocks, and corals can make the underwater scene of your aquarium look natural. If you want to create a scene, you can decorate the aquarium with wreck ornaments, ruins, treasure ornaments, and even some decoration that you can light up from within. Practical uses of decorations include giving the fish a resting place and hiding other aquarium equipment.

In the case of plants, if you are after convenience, it is easier to use plastic aquarium plants. You only need to clean them regularly. While live plants can add oxygen and help with the cycling, they also add to the work of your filters since dead plants contribute to the organic waste inside the tank. http://www.tropical-fish.me http://www.enigma-webdesign.com
Do you really need one to be successful in this hobby?

For freshwater fish you may be able to get by without having one. Freshwater fish are generally more suited to captivity because they are usually tank raised and don't seem to break out in disease as readily as their saltwater counterparts. However, if newly acquired fish do come down with something, you will surely wish that you had one ready to go. One newly bought fish that is introduced to your main tank can easily wipe out the entire tank population. Better safe than sorry, right?

For saltwater aquarium keepers, I would say that you definitely need a quarantine tank. Marine specimens are mostly wild caught and not used to being kept in captivity. Their journey to a dealers tank is usually much longer and much more stressful for them. Stressed out fish will usually come down with some kind of disease if they don't simply die from the whole ordeal. Saltwater fish keepers will usually have other things in the main display tank such as invertebrates and live rock, that they don't want to expose to the harsh medicines necessary to treat one or two fish. Some medicines can wipe out all of the invertebrates in a tank, so be sure to research any medicine before using it in your tank.

Quarantine Tank Setup
You don't need to go all out here. A simple 10 - 20 gallon aquarium will suffice for most people. If you have larger fish then obviously you want to get a bigger quarantine tank. All you really need is a bare bones setup with the following equipment:

Some type of filtration (a hang on the back of the tank power filter will work, just use filter floss without the carbon since carbon will remove medication from the water, being counter productive) Heater A powerhead and/or an airstone for increased surface agitation Test Kits for pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate Fish Net - don't use the same net for your main tank

Fill the quarantine tank with water from the main tank and then turn everything on in the quarantine tank.

Freshwater & Saltwater Fish Quarantine
For newly acquired fish you will want to acclimate them to the water in the quarantine tank and monitor them very closely for a period of two to three weeks. Monitor the water parameters with your test kits and check for signs of parasites or bacterial infections.

If the newly acquired fish does come down with something you will need to use the appropriate medication and you will need to keep them in quarantine for a further two weeks to make sure that you have indeed treated them effectively. If after a few weeks no problems develop, you can then acclimate them to the main tank water and then introduce them.

If a fish comes down with something while in your main tank, just net them and plop them into the quarantine tank. There should be no need to acclimate them because you used water from your main tank. If you didn't use water from the main tank you will need to acclimate them to the quarantine tank water. Diagnose the problem/disease and treat appropriately. After the disease clears up you will still want to keep the fish in quarantine for a week or so monitoring the water parameters with your test kits the whole time.

More On Saltwater Quarantine
Always have some extra saltwater ready in case you need to perform an emergency water change. Remember, you want to monitor those water parameters frequently (daily or at least once every two days). Many saltwater hobbyists always have saltwater ready just in case. You never want to mix up saltwater and add it right away. Freshly mixed saltwater can be fairly toxic to fish, in turn causing you more problems.

Conclusion
Freshwater hobbyists may get away with not using a quarantine tank, but saltwater hobbyists would be crazy not using one. Save yourself some money, headaches and especially the fish by having a quarantine tank. The fish in your main tank will thank you for it.
However, these fish are not as easy to maintain as goldfish - the most popular aquarium fish of them all.
The two popular sources of getting hold of discus fish for your aquarium are importers and home breeders. Importers usually have vast knowledge about the fish, and can offer excellent advice when it comes to caring for the fish, feeding and handling disease. Home breeders are usually hobbyists, and they tend to sell their fish when they are fairly small - this means that the fish come cheap, but will be much more delicate and require greater care. Before buying fish, do the same amount of homework that you would do before buying any pet. Read up intensively on the fish's needs, and make sure that you can spare enough time to care for them. Otherwise, you may well end up losing all your investment in a mere few weeks.

That said, here are a few essential tips toward caring for discus fish. They're merely a tip in the iceberg, but even that is a start!

Clean the water Discus fish require their water to be highly filtered, full of beneficial bacteria and free of chemical pollutants like chlorine. To keep your discus fish healthy, it is absolutely necessary to install a filtration mechanism that allows for mechanical, biological AND chemical filtering.

Keep the fish in groups Discus fish are highly social. In the wild, they are found in large groups, and exhibit highly complex social systems. In fact, discus is one of few true schooling species among cichlids.

Have a deep aquarium Discus fish are easily startled by movement above the water's surface. Therefore, having a deep aquarium allows for a lot of space between the fish and any movements above the surface

Keep fish away from noise and disturbance Although you would like to have your fish on display, discus fish are shy, and their health may suffer if they are too close to sources of sudden noise like doors and hallways.

Stable water conditions The importance of stable water conditions cannot be stressed enough. Make sure that the temperature, pH and oxygen levels of the water remain constant. When cleaning the tank, make sure that the new water you add to it is identical in pH to the older water and within 1.5 degrees in temperature.

A school of discus fish is a beautiful addition to any aquarium. With proper care, they can live for several years, and can also be bred to keep your initial investment going and paying returns. So tend to your fish's needs, and bask in the admiration of everyone who sees your beautiful tropical aquarium!

However, proper discus care is essential to keep your fish alive and healthy.

Starting up around the 1850s (when the forerunner of the modern aquarium were initially being created as a novel curiosity) the ranks of aquarium keeping has grown as more sophisticated systems including lighting and filtration systems had been designed to keep aquarium fish healthy. If you are one of those enthusiast, you will understand that selecting the type of aquarium is the primary step in aquarium keeping. For saltwater aquarium, there are numerous types of tanks to decide from:

The first type of saltwater aquarium is the fish only aquarium. This is probably the simplest to care for of the five types, simply because you are only working with one type of species. Throughout the saltwater fish there are both tropical and coldwater kinds. They cannot be kept together for apparent reasons. The water temperatures differ considerably. Tropical fish are commonly brighter in color, and therefore more appealing to aquarium lovers compared to the fish attainable in the cold water variety. A lot of people are somewhat familiar with a few tropical fish such as the Clownfish or the Angel fish. However, very few people have heard of these types of cold water varieties as, the Shanny or the Tompot Blenny.

The second type of saltwater aquarium is the invertebrate only aquarium. Such types of aquariums often are made up of shrimp, prawn, hermit crabs and possibly even starfish or sea cucumbers. The third type is the fish and invertebrate saltwater aquarium. They are more difficult to keep than either of the two categories on their own. Several invertebrates feed on certain types of fish, and the opposite is likewise true. As a result, it is important to study the species thoroughly to ensure that you do not placed predator and prey together inside the same aquarium. Ailments could also spread much more easily and tend to be more tricky to prevent and cure in aquariums that contain both invertebrates and fish species.

The next type of saltwater aquarium is the coral reef aquarium. Reef aquariums can be challenging to take care of and must be thoroughly researched prior to attempted. The final type of saltwater aquariums is the specialty aquarium. An example of a specialty aquarium might be an aquarium full of sea horses. Sea horses should not be held along with any other kind of fish or marine life, because they are timid and slow eaters. Their diet source can very easily be taken away by other tank mates. Seahorses prefer to swim vertically rather than horizontally, and should be located in a tall tank. An octopus and a shark or a ray are other good examples of fish that require exclusive needs and would certainly fall into the type of specialty aquarium.

Regardless of which type of saltwater aquarium is chosen, you need to do your own research before purchasing any marine life. There are a few good resources out there in salt water aquarium set up. Make sure you equip yourself with the right knowledge before making the plunge.
This is done on a daily, weekly, monthly, and even yearly basis. By keeping up with your maintenance tasks, you can help prevent fish stress caused by any irregularity in their environment. The goal is to make sure that the fish tank lives up to the living requirements of your tropical fish. Here's a short guide. Daily maintenance tasks

The daily maintenance tasks required for tropical fish tanks are simple and easy. All you have to do is make a head count to make sure that all fish or aquatic animals inside the tank are alive. Also spot dead plants so you can remove them immediately. Check if the water is up to its optimum level. If not, then replace the water to keep the salinity at its proper level along with the pH levels.

To make sure that the fish will thrive, make sure that the heater is working properly. Check its temperature reading along with your thermometer's just to be sure.

Weekly maintenance tasks
You change the water and also clean tropical fish tanks on a weekly basis. This is the time when you have to check the decor and any ornament installed inside your fish tank. Take them out and clean them at once. Also check the tank walls, and look for any floating particles. For live plants, pruning and re-anchoring are most often required. Do not empty the entire fish tank with its water, only take out 25%. The water that you will add should be filtered, aerated, and, most importantly, dechlorinated, as chlorine can harm your fish. When changing the water, observe the right temperature needed by tropical fish tanks. Try not to make any abrupt movements to prevent causing stress to fish.

Monthly maintenance tasks The monthly maintenance tasks for tropical fish tanks include checking, cleaning, and replacing some of their equipment, which include filter media and cartridges. To conserve water, you can schedule the monthly task along with the water change. Use the used water for cleaning the chemical and mechanical media. For the biological media of tropical fish tanks, there's no need to clean them as these will only render the bacteria culture used for filtration useless.

More importantly, check and monitor the pH levels, along with the nitrates, ammonia, and nitrites in the fish tank. Making sure that they are at their proper level will keep the fish healthy and thriving. Make it a habit to jut down all your observations so you can use them as reference for any problem you might have with tropical fish tanks.

Bi-annual maintenance tasks
Tropical fish tanks are equipped with pumps, light bulbs, filters, pipes, and protein skimmers, and you need to clean or replace them at least every six months. Make sure that the pumps are working properly by checking for impeller cracks or any missing blades. For pipes, you have to clean them thoroughly to make sure that they'll work properly. It's best to replace the light bulbs of tropical fish tanks one at a time and when they're cool enough. Check the manual as a guide for replacing and cleaning any of these equipment.

Tools for maintenance
To complete the task diligently, arm yourself with the needed tools for maintenance. Among them are the algae pads, gravel vacuums, scrapers, tongs, gloves, tongs, and magnetic cleaners. Also use cleaning fluids such as salt creep removers, lime dissolvers, and glass polishers.
They come from the family Serranidae that contain chiefly basslets along with groupers. Within the basslet family, they are classified in a sub-family named Anthiinae.

There have been 7 found species among this subfamily thus far. Anthias are primarily a shoaling saltwater fish that can sometimes be found in the thousands throughout their usual habitats on the reefs.

They are typically found inhabiting areas of extremely strong water flow, something that should be simulated in the home aquarium. Roughly all anthias varieties feed on saltwater plankton all through the day. This detail makes these striking saltwater fishes rather difficult to keep in the aquarium.

Some fare especially poorly in captivity and reject prepared fish food until they finally starve to death. Multiple feedings of smaller fish food need to be available everyday. A quantity of good selections consist cyclopeeze and grinded meaty seafoods. Feedings upwards of three times each day is suggested. If such a feeding schedule cannot be offered, it would be best to shop outside of the anthias family of fish.

Anthias are located at depths anywhere from 20 feet all the way as deep as two hundred feet. Deep dwelling anthias typically command a especially expensive price and are almost always snapped up when available. 2 recognizable and expensive deep living types are Pseudoanthias Ventralis as well as Pseudoanthias Privitera.

Also included in the Anthias fish family are a few unique oddities for instance the highfin perchlet. Commonly confused as a hawkfish, they come from the genus PLectranthias. Like hawkfish, the highfin perchlet does not possess a swim bladder.

All anthias fish are sequential hermaphrodites. Large shoals are usually made up of a greater percentage of females than males. These marine fish require big tanks to do well. If more than one anthias fish from a species is required, make sure there is only a single male present. Adding males in captivity will almost always bring about aggression.

By and large, anthias are considered a fairly modestly priced saltwater fish beyond of the uncommon deepwater species. Prices range anywhere from $20 to $40 per anthias based on species. extremely colorful, most lovers make an effort to imitate their shoaling behavior in the aquarium. However, only those with the biggest saltwater tanks are successful.
It turned out that there were a few more factors other than how pretty the fish was that we had to consider before making our choice. So in this article I'm going to share with you some tips that I have learned to consider when choosing fish for your tropical fish tanks.

Fish Temperature
If you are having tropical fish you will need to have a heater in your tank set at the right temperature for those type of fish. So it is important to remember that not all fish come from the same part of the world and therefore some fish will require different temperatures than others. So you will want to choose fish that all live within the same temperature range.

Tank Size and Fish Size
The number of fish you have in your tank is quite important as you don't want your tank to be overcrowded. You need to keep in mind that when you buy fish they are often young fish and are not fully grown, so think about how big those fish are going to get and then work out how many fish you can have in your size tank based on their fully grown size.

Not All Fish Get Along
All fish have different personalities and some breeds tend to be more aggressive than others so it is very important to take in their personality when putting different types of fish together. Some fish breeds will not only attack other fish but some will even eat other smaller fish. Fish such as Cichlids can be quite aggressive and so it is best to keep that type of fish together with others of the same type and not mix them with other types of tropical fish, this will ensure that you have happy fish that can live peacefully together.

Fish Diet
Different types of fish will have different diets. Some fish eat frozen food, others will eat flakes and others will eat live food. It is easiest if you stick to fish that eat the same type of foods and you need to learn how much to give them and how often to feed them.

So as you can see, choosing fish isn't as simple as picking the prettiest one, you really do need to consider these other factors. If you aren't sure about any of these factors then talk to your fish specialist at your local pet store and I'm sure they will be able to help you find the right fish for your tropical fish tanks.

When they go out to lunch, they'll return to the relaxing site of tropical fish swimming about on their monitor, but wouldn't it be much more exciting to have an actual tropical fish tank in the office?

It has long been proven that tropical fish tanks have many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and lowering stress and anxiety. Lower blood pressure means reduced stress levels, and in today's world of high job demands and tight deadlines, stress needs to be avoided where possible as stress can lead to illness and therefore a reduced workforce.

If your biggest problem with having a tropical fish tank in the office is the cost, think again. Companies such as Aqualease are making it easier and more affordable to have a tropical fish tank in your workplace thanks to their tropical fish tank rental service.

Aqualease's tropical fish tank service works by first selecting the fish tank that you like and Aqualease take care of the rest including installation, the maintenance of visual presentation, servicing of filtration, lighting and heating systems, monitoring and partial water changing, guarantee and replacement service for equipment, accessories, and livestock, maintenance of decor, the administration of all medications and treatments and the ongoing supply of fish food. When you add up the cost of all of that, plus the cost of the fish tank and the fish, the Aqualease tropical fish tank service is excellent value for money.

Aqualease have many different tropical fish tanks to choose from including column fish tanks and cabinet fish tanks. Column fish tanks are perfect if you're looking to make a big impression on visitors and clients as they range from 5ft 6" to 6ft in height. Cabinet fish tanks are great if space is an issue as they feature, as the name suggests, a cabinet base which is ideal for storing documents or equipment.

So if you're tired of watching animated fish on your employees' monitors, why not speak to Aqualease about their tropical fish tank service.
It's up to you whether you want to keep saltwater or freshwater, but if this is your first aquarium, then I suggest you start with a freshwater aquarium.

Here's why: Saltwater tanks are more expensive and more complex. You have extra things to worry about such as the salinity of the water, water conditioning, and temperature. Because of this, freshwater fish are much easier to care for if you're new to keeping tropical fish.

Here's a few other things to keep in mind when buying an aquarium:

Location When you're deciding on a location for your aquarium, remember that it can't be placed in direct sunlight, or anywhere else that could result in changes in temperature.

Also remember that your aquarium, when filled with water, can be very heavy. As an example, a filled 20-gallon glass tank will weight about 225 pounds. Bear this in mind when you choose on a location for your aquarium...as it will be impossible to move afterwards.

Level floor You will need a level floor for your aquarium, as this will reduce stress on the tank and reduce the chance of any cracks forming over time due to the floor being uneven.

Electrical outlet Make sure your new tank is located near an electrical outlet so you can plug in the heaters, lights and pumps.

Accessible You'll need to have easy access to your tank so you can use the heater controls and air valves. You also need to have room for a net, and room to move decorations around.

Shape When you're choosing the shape of your aquarium choose short, longer shapes over tall, thinner shapes. This way there will be more surface area at the top of the water, which is much better for your fish.

Size It is best to choose an aquarium over 10 gallons. Why? Because it's just easier to take care of a fish in a larger tank than a smaller one. Whatever aquarium you choose, it is going to, over time, have a build up of waste material. In a large tank these toxic materials have more room to be dispersed. This means the water stays cleaner for longer, and will require less cleaning than a smaller tank.

Material Aquariums can be made from glass or acrylic. Both have there pros and cons, but I recommend beginners to start with a glass aquarium. Why? Firstly, they cost less, secondly, they don't scratch so easily, and thirdly, they only need to be supported by the edges.

As you can see, you need to put some time and consideration into where you choose to place your aquarium. All these things will play a part in which aquarium you choose to buy.
The first step would be to go to your local aquarium shop and take a good look around at the different varieties available. The shop keeper should be able to advise you on the different needs and techniques needed. Obviously, a big part of your decision will be based on the appearance of the fish, but try to also allow some room in the decision making process for the needs of the fish. Can you cater for all their needs?

Keeping marine fish is often thought to be a lot harder than keeping freshwater tropical species. The truth is that they just have different requirements and tend to suffer from mistakes a bit more than freshwater fish do. If you know what you are doing, keeping marine fish should be no problem. The benefit of having a marine aquarium is that the species you have on offer are absolutely stunning. When choosing your fish, be aware that some species will be more aggressive than others, so be careful not to match the wrong fish together.

Freshwater tropical fish are very popular due to being a little easier to manage for beginners than their marine equivalents. Most aquarium stores will sell packages aimed at people who are new to keeping tropical fish, and typically these will come with the appropriate filters, heaters and lighting. Once again, the variety of fish you have on offer is quite large and there should be no difficulty in finding fish that you like. As with keeping any kind of fish, never rush into it and always think carefully about what fish you'd like, and how much space and time you can give them before you fill your aquarium up.

Coldwater fish have a slightly boring reputation thanks to the 'goldfish in a bowl' idea. However, this really isn't the case and you can find some really good looking coldwater fish that will eventually grow to quite a large size! As an example, Koi Carp are a fantastic breed of fish that come in many different colours and will last for many, many years. Coldwater fish do present their own challenges to fish keepers and it really isn't just a case of sticking a fish in a bowl and feeding it every day. As with all other types of fish keeping, a good understanding of basic water chemistry and the needs of you fish will go a long way to giving you fish a sustained life. Koi's for example must be fed a good and balanced diet and as the winter creeps in this diet must be changed to lower protein foods.
Anything above it can be considered as big freshwater aquarium. Well, if you're still not sure as to the size of your aquarium, you can always get the 55 gallon tank. It is already big enough to hold several fish and it is suitable to homes or offices with limited space. The specifics will be provided by the local or online retailers but it would be a great idea to be well informed as well. As long as you're aware of the different aspects of owning an aquarium, you can create a thriving water environment at home.

You can try investing on an acrylic 55 gallon big freshwater aquarium since it is more durable and lightweight as compared to the glass tanks. This is also suitable for high traffic places and if you have little kids at home who are very curious. Aside from the tank, you will also need to buy a tank stand so that it will be safe from bumps and potential knock-offs. Certain equipment and accessories for your aquarium are also needed like thermometer and heater for tropical freshwater aquariums. Since the fish live in a controlled environment, it is your responsibility to monitor the condition of the fish.

You will need around 5 rock bags or you can pick other substrates in the store. To make an interesting tank, pick a substrate that has bright color. To ensure a safe and clean environment, you will also need to invest on a good filter. The filter should be suitable for the fish species that you plan to put inside the tank. Lighting is another important factor - there are basic lights as well as technical settings.

Your big freshwater aquarium can provide you with the needed relaxation after work. Invest in one now.
The keeping of fish in small indoor tanks was only seriously considered in the middle of the last century, when both in Britain and the rest of Europe a considerable interest in the subject developed...

At the beginning of the 1900's aquarists around the world began to keep tropical fishes, and it was the "trend" of so doing that started a new wave of popular fish culture (keeping fish as pets)...

The older aquarists were obsessed with copying nature in their tanks-or rather with the attempt to try and copy nature-whereas the keepers of warm-water fishes had to experiment and create suitable environments for them...

Often they started only with the knowledge that the fish must be kept warm, and this in itself raised problems, including the death of favorite weeds and water snails at higher temperatures...

So the aquarium gradually came to be regarded as most of us see it today, as a beautiful display, not a mirror held up to nature...

However, until the keeping of tropical fish, it seems that aquarists in general thought that the proper aim of an aquarium keeper was to reproduce a segment of nature...

They now realize that their task is the maintenance of a highly artificial and restricted community of animals and plants, with a balance that can easily topple with disastrous results to at least some of the members. At the same time, aquariums can generally be easily maintained as long as a few fundamental facts are recognized and applied with commonsense to the problems that arise...

So lets talk now about some of the characteristics of aquariums and tropical fish...

The old fashioned fish bowl has almost completely replaced for serious fish-keeping by the rectangular glass tank, either made wholly of glass or with a metal frame and glass sides and a bottom of glass, slate, or other rigid material...

Except when used for spawning, for exhibition purposes, or as a hospital tank for the treatment of disease, the tank contains growing, rooted plants; these are set in a sand or gravel layer 1 or 2 inches thick. There may be decorative rocks, but the chief decoration is usually the plants themselves, which contribute more to the attractive appearance of a well set-up tank than do the fishes...

Rectangular tanks are usually between 5 and 25 gallons in capacity; a 15-gallon tank measures 24 X 12 X 12 inches and is a favorite size. Smaller tanks than these cannot house many fish or allow proper development of the plants...

Larger tanks are very attractive and give scope for beautiful planting arrangements and for fine growth of the fishes, but they are expensive and not likely to become generally popular. Most fish lovers therefore prefer a range of medium tanks rather than one or two very large ones, but it must be emphasized that fine fishes can be grown in large tanks...

In general, tropical fishes can be housed in smaller tanks than cold-water fishes. This is because they are usually smaller and are also better able to withstand a relative deficiency of oxygen in the water...

Size for size, most tropical fishes can be crowded a good deal more than the common goldfish and very much more than fancy varieties of goldfish. A 15-gallon tank might comfortably contain a dozen 3-inch rosy barbs, four or five 3-inch common goldfish at the most, and not more than a pair of Orandas of the same size...

Fish consume solid food and excrete solid faeces. They breathe oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, and therefore they tend to deplete their environment of oxygen and to pollute it with carbon dioxide and excrement...

Plants also breathe oxygen, but in sufficiently bright light they manufacture sugars, etc., from carbon dioxide taken from their surroundings, whether air or water, and they release oxygen. This is done in the green leaf...

Plants also absorb dissolved salts and use these together with carbon dioxide in building up complex organic compounds. Very few higher plants can utilize solid or very complex substances, and before animal excrement (usually known as "mulm" in the fish tank) is available to them it must be broken down by fungi or bacteria and made soluble...

So plants, in adequate light, tend to restore oxygen to the environment and to remove the waste products of animals. In poor light or in darkness they deplete the water or air of oxygen just as animals do. It is only in the daytime, or under bright artificial light, that they perform the complementary function to animals...

From these facts grew the concept of a balanced aquarium, with the waste products of the fishes absorbed by the plants, and the oxygen necessary for the fishes provided by the action of the plants in light...

The moral of the story? A well-planted tank with adequate illumination will usually stay clear and sweet for months or years with little attention...

Hopefully this article has given you a great insight into tropical fish as pets and the healthy keeping of aquariums.
For instance, tropical aquarium plants add much benefit to your fish tank. This fish tank accessory is not only vital for the aesthetic value and beauty of the aquarium, but it also plays an important role in the rearing and growth processes of your aquarium fish.

There are various benefits that healthy aquatic and tropical plants render to your freshwater aquarium. A fish tank that has abundant vegetation is a visual treat, giving it bright and exciting colors. Further, the photosynthesis process that plants go through is one way of providing oxygen in the tank for your fish to breathe and utilize. Furthermore, fish tend to hide and sometimes breed with the help of plants provided in their aquariums.

The vital success of providing aquarium plants starts with the right choices you make when you look for aquatic plants and the kind of fish that are compatible working together in its habitat. Make sure that if you put aquatic plants inside your aquarium, your fish are not plant-eating since they will consume the plants leaving nothing for other fish to hide and breed and a big mess. Further, choose fish that do not knock plants from their original mooring as this creates more work for you.

Those who are especially new in this kind of hobby oftentimes find it frustrating to look for plants to accessorize their aquarium. To find the best plant type and where to buy them, you can do research through various sources. There are online stores and information sources that teach first time fish keepers what to do. There are also local pet or fish stores near you that sell aquatic plants together with other fish tank accessories and supplies. If you do not want to add live plants to your aquarium, you can add fake plants that will still provide habitat for your fish.

You need your own imaginative creativity in coming up with the best aquarium complete with the most appropriate tropical aquarium plants to grace your aquarium. You may opt for taller types of plants and place them at the back area of the aquarium while you have smaller plants at the front. There are many plant varieties that are preferred because of their striking colors, shapes and designs. Should you prefer to decorate your fish tank with floating plants, make sure that you have sufficient lighting and enough space since these types take over most of the water surface.

Just like any other aquatic components, plants also have their own needs and specifications most particularly when it comes to lighting, pH and nutrients among others. Care for your aquatic plants and they will help care for your precious fish.

Let's look at the tropical fish aquarium from a different perspective. The tropical fish are primarily made to live in the sea water, but we are looking for a way to make them live in a small aquarium tank. No matter what you do an aquarium tank can never be replaced with real life sea life. I an aquarium we can try our best to rebuild the kind of environment that the tropical fish will enjoy, but certainly has limitations.

That is why selecting the exact types of tropical fish will help you create a healthy aquarium in no time at all. Not all tropical fish can survive in the small tank. Also there are certain species that will never live together and cam cause danger to lives of each other.

That is why the best types of tropical fish that you can use in your home aquarium are.

1) Blue Gourami or 3 Spot Gourami

2) The Black Moor Goldfish

3) The Butterfly Loach

These 3 types of tropical fish are best as pet tropical fish that you can have in a home aquarium. Actually there are hundreds of types of tropical fish with great amount of colors that can easily add to the beauty of you tropical fish aquarium, but as I said they must be willing to adjust themselves to the kind of environment you will be creating in a small aquarium.

Types of tropical fish varies with not just colors, but the kind of food they eat and types of tropical fish they will go with. Amongst the many types of tropical fish such as Rainbows, Danios, Barbs, the butterfly loach is the one that can go very well with any kind of other type of fish and helps to keep the tank clean too.

Below are 6 top tips for tropical fish care:

1) Tropical Fish Tank Tips
You should try to get the biggest tank you can afford. As a result water temperature will be stable in bigger tank and it will be easier to care for your fishes. It will also give your fishes more water thus keeping them healthier. Besides even if a fish dies it will not affect the others.

2) Tropical Fish Should Have Plenty Of Places To Hide.
Ironically you give them more room to hide and they will hide less. Resulting in lower levels of stress for your tropical fish.

3) Fish Should Be Away From Sunlight.
Your fish should not be close to direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will create major problems in the form of green algae. Direct sunlight will also increase your tanks water temperature. Thus avoid sunlight to help you care better for your Tropical fish.

4) Fish Feeding Care
A good diet is an essential part of Tropical Fish Care. Do not give your tropical fish only flakes. You will see better colors and increased vitality by giving them a variety in their diet. Flakes could be primary diet but try to supplement their diet with other types of food every few days.

To ensure better fish care do not over feed your fish. Instead of giving one big feed you can give two small feedings. When you give your fish food they should be able to finish within a minute or two else you will see flakes settling on the bottom of the tank and that means you have given too much food. Extra feeding will give poor aquarium water quality and will increase stress levels of your fish.

5) Stocking of Tropical Fish
Don't add too many fish to your tank. It's better to add fishes in your tank slowly to help your tank's biological filtration system to work properly.

6) Fish Tank Maintenance Tips and Care
You should be changing water of your tank regularly. Frequent water change is better for Tropical fish care and it will not cause stress and shouldn't interfere with the biological cycle of the tank.
