TK MAXX homeware haul: Spring 2016

This may be one of my smallest hauls ever! But the pieces are so pretty and such good value for money that I just had to share!

I decided to revamp my space and give it a bit of a lift for spring.

I always find good stuff in Tk Maxx and this time was no different.

What is a trip to Tk maxx without coming out with a candle?

I picked up:

Siren Sea Glass

which smells so light yet fragrant.
It has amber and woody notes which I love but is also fresh. I picked this up for £5.99.

Dw home Black Tabac & Teak

As the name suggests this is a very rich and deep candle.
I love what are traditionally winter candles all year round.
I find them really soothing and this candle just smells amazing.
It is a massive 2 wick candle for less than £6!

These have over 35 hours burning time each and the jars are just as gorgeous as the scents.

I also grabbed this stunning burnished copper terrarium/ display box. (similar)

A blogger staple I know but I bagged this in the sale area and received a further discount bringing the total down to £6.99!

These sell out so fast online but I know for a fact the stock these in several branches. Some even with a better discount than I got.

I am sooo happy with my new spring homeware buts and bobs and can't wait to go back and get some more goodies.

Skincare: Brightening products to get the glow

So I am all about the glow.

Whether it is highlighters- Check out my Makeup Revolution favs or doing a d.i.y face mask.

I love it. There is nothing better than having a healthy glow.

For me sorting out my skin is the most important beauty step.

If your skin isn't as good as you can make it.

There is absolutely no use applying make up to skin that hasn't been cared for properly and wondering why your make up doesn't t look right.

I have been really happy with the products I've been using lately and wanted to share.

Luckily my skin doesn't get too dull/ have that greyish cast some get with the English weather but as a person with combination skin (usually: normal/combination. Now: normal/combination/ a few dry patches).

Walking that fine line between hydrated, non textured, glowing skin has been helped by these skincare products below!

Kiko Anti-age peeling brightening and smoothing effect

I snagged this on sale for £2.90 but really disliked this product to begin with.

It is actually an Anti-aging product but as I have said before if I see brightening I am on it.

It isn't a peeling mask as the name would suggest, I just think the name is misleading and not a good description for it.

However once I started massaging my face and then leaving it on for about 5 minutes I saw a massive difference and loved it.

It has an oleogel formulation which means that there isn't a physical feeling of exfoliation and the texture is a mix between an oil and serum. Once I had worked out how to make it work for me I saw immediate results.

As you can see I need to pick up a new one. I suggest going in store as It is always sold out online.

Missha Time Revolution essence

Essence is very big business in Korean beauty and is another layer in helping the face become balanced /moisturised and in turn brighter.

I feel like when my skin is fully hydrated it glows, so I had to include this.

Time revolution is one of Missha's top selling products and receives rave reviews.

I found that my first week of use was out of this world and then I saw no difference. I continued using it for 2 more weeks and was really impressed with the results from week 3.

It contains a very high percentage of fermented yeast concentrate (saccharomyces ferment filtrate), which nourishes the skin immediately as in absorbs almost instantaneously. The yeast as well as niacinamide and Vitamin B3 help repair the skin cells barrier and begins improving skin elasticity.

As well as eventing tone.

This is very pricey but does go a long way.

Pixi Glow Tonic

What can I say about the glow tonic, that hasn't been said?

This is iconic for a reason.

This gentle AHA acid toner works really, really well for me.

I tend to alternate between using it daily and every other day on a monthly basis.

This is great for brightening, texture, marks and radiance.

Although effective it is a little pricey at times for what I would consider mid ranged quality skincare.

The packaging for a long time put me off buying regularly as I am not a fan.

Una Brennan The Super Facialist Vitamin C + daily polish wash

I have been using this polish on and off for a few years and really like it!

I do't use this everyday, which is why I think it last so long.

It is very invigorating yet gentle and I see results straight away.
It smells great too, which is an incentive to use it.

TONYMOLY Floria Brightening Peeling Gel

This is an great exfoliating mask.

Those have come across TonyMoly within the Korean Skincare arena know this a really affordable performer.

This again contains AHA's and once you start massaging, it balls up and you can actually see that the little balls are a greyish colour.

I did think it was just the product reacting to itself but my skin feels soft and I see more balls in dryer areas.

What I like to do is apply this gently all over my cleansed face as once you rub this, it starts balling up.

Once it is all over my face I leave it as a mask for 5-10mins then I start massaging.

It is very easy to wash off and my skin feels soooo soft and just glows.

One thing I will say is the scent is very bold.

I am not a fan but it isn't offensive just very pungent.

So if you can't deal with strong floral scents beware!

Glycolic Exfoliating Cleanser (E1)

As you can probably tell.

Facetheory is a company I am really enjoying at the moment.

This is one of the 2 cleansers I picked up earlier this year.

Althought the formula isnt my favourite. There is no denying the healthy glow it brings to my skin.

With glycerin, 2% glycolic and 1% salicylic acid, it is an all round moisturising and brightening exfoliating cleanser.

As I have said before my skin feels soft, fresh and looks bright.

Facetheory always have a discount code floating about , so definitely try them out.

A 2015 stand out brand for me was Alba Botanica.

Their Hawaiian facial range in particular.

I took to the Alba Botanica Hawaiian Facial Mask 85g really well and love how smooth my skin feels.

Pores are less visible and my skin always looks less textured. The best thing is the instant brightness. My skin just glows.

It contains Papaya, which is a well known fruit acid exfoliant.

It also has healing and skin barrier boosting properties. It does sting occasionally but now I use it after a cream clenser or balm. The stinging has diminished greatly.

I try to use this mask weekly for about 10 minutes as I do chores and the results are excellent.

Superdrug Naturally Radiant Hot Cloth Cleanser

This is always in my bathroom and as it is always on some sort of price deal.
I have a pretty good stock pile.

Often compared to he Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, the creamy consistency is very rich and moisturising.

The mix of Kiwi Fruit, Mulberry extracts and Cocoa Butter works well with my skin.

I can use this as a quick cleanser and know that my makeup/ general grime is being dealt with efficiently.

I also use this as a mask- what don't I use as a mask? lol

Leaving this on for about 10 minutes, doing a quick massage and using a warm cloth to cleanse is bliss!

So those are my current skin brightening products!

Facetheory Skincare: Cleansers and moisturiser review

I did a Facetheory skincare haul back in January.

Having picked up a few products in the sales and have been trialling them since then.

I kept it simple and picked up 3 items.
2 cleansers and a moisturiser.
Things that I knew I could test throughly and really see results with.

Gentle Skin Cleanser C1 (signature)
Containing avocado, coconut, silk and apricot.
This is targeted towards dry and combination skin- which fits my skin perfectly atm.

This is my favourite cleanser out of the two I bought. I really like how moisturised my face feels post cleanser.
It's very gentle yet oh so effective. It has just the right amount of creaminess and glides on over the face easily.

You need a pump and half maximum for face and neck coverage so it lasts a long while.
I found the signature cleanser very easy to remove and it didn't leave any residue.
I have also been leaving this on my face as a mask for about 5-10 mins whilst I potter about and it leaves my face hydrated and silky.
I really do see a subtle glow every time I use it.-Bonus!

Glycolic Exfoliating Cleanser (E1)

Has natural micro pumice stones.
As well as glycerin, glycolic and salicylic acid.
This means that the cleanser helps to keep skin moisturised as glycerin is a humectant but works 2 fold as a chemical exfoliator and a physical one.

I reach for this cleanser less than the other as the formula is a lot more runny.
I prefer a slightly thicker consistency but I have tried mixing the 2 together for a more substantial consistency.
Which works, so when I buy my next batch, I will mix the leftovers into one container.

I do however like the ingredients and how they make my skin look when I do use it.
My skin feels fresh, bright and soft.
This leaves a really even surface to work with and was a great help when testing out the Madam LA LA bronzer in my February blogger beauty box.
I have found that my skin responds particularly well to bark extract after testing out the Madara clarifying toner and a few other products, So the willow bark in this formulation is a bonus.

The pumice stones are not abrasive and don't leave my face feeling sensitive or scarred.
They are used sparingly which I like.
This is also a great gentle exfoliator for hands and feet!

Moisturiser for Oily Skin M3

Packed full of hyaluronic acid, vitamins E & C and passion fruit extract.

I really, really, really like this moisturiser!

I actually have combination skin but this is so nice.

It has a whipped quality, which works well with my skin.

From the moment I tested it , I liked it.

It works well as a day and night cream and really helps to keep the cold weather from battering my skin.

I am experiencing light dryness on my cheeks and chin atm as explained in my Pampering and treatments: Facials- 7 things you need to know post,
atm so having a moisturiser that is rich and nourishing but doesn't make my face greasy as heck is important.

It is very hydrating yet absorbs to a dewy matte finish.

This is just perfection!
One pump or even half a pump is enough to moisturise my face and neck.
I also use this a hand moisturiser and find it to be excellent also.
This is a must have in my next order.

Overall I am soooo expressed with the quality and can't wait to stock up.
Being able to customise with natural fragrance.
As well as having skincare questionnaire to offer you solutions specifically for your skin type really appeals to me.
I am also looking forward to seeing if they bring out any new releases to add to the range.
I think a serum and eyecream would be a great edition.

The Body Shop collection: Body mists

The Body Shop and I have a long and glorious history.
My mum would always buy their kiwi collection - very old school and is obsessed with the hemp products.
You can see that my obsession with the Hemp hand cream is also very real, in my Skincare savers/ saviours post.
So they have always been around my home and part of my beauty/skincare awareness.

There are so many products, that I enjoy but I personally have always been drawn to the Body Shop mists.
When I was in secondary school .
I would walk past the one on Victoria highstreet and spritz my jumper lavishly with the vanilla Body Mist and dab an oil (my bro used to use the oil too) liberally on my wrists before sashaying out to start my day.
(the testers obvs lol)
Now I have a long tradition of doing a massive haul of my fav scents every other year.
They last so long I don't need to purchase them more regularly.

Although not the most expensive, quite a few of them are long lasting and I continually return to stock up as many of the mists hold great memories for me.

There have been some great sales so far this year and I definitely splurged.
I usually opt for the mists as I find that some of the perfumes don't smell the same as their mist counterparts or surprisingly don't last that long on me.

These are my current all rounder favs are :

Red Musk™ Fragrance Mist

Moringa Body Mist

Satsuma Body Mist

They are all really fresh and vibrant, which is always important for transitional scents.
Each one can take me from a crisp winter morning to bbqs at the height of summer.

Pampering and treatments: Facials- 7 things you need to know

Hi Loves,
Over the last few years.
I have tried to actively set aside some relaxation and me time.

Pampering treatments and massages are always at the top of my list and I have become adept at hunting out a great treatment deal.

It was my Birthday back in February and I had my first facial of the year- woop.
(Other treats included my first Blogger Beauty Box and My UK ColourPop haul.)

As it was cold, windy and very dry I went with a hydrating facial.
I thought it would be best as not only would I get a deep hydrating facial but any winter dullness would be brightened up.
As this is something I really enjoy. I wanted to share a few things I have learnt along the way.
Here are 7 things I have learnt about getting a facial.
Hope this helps ...........

1. General

Hygiene is important. So offer your facialist the same curtsey you expect brush your teeth and pop a mint.

Get to your appointment 15 minutes earlier. To fill in forms etc so it doesn't eat into your allotted facial time.

2. skincare.

Avoid exfoliating with scrubs or acids for a day or 2 before your facial as your skin will be more sensitive. This also goes for waxing or threading your face/ eyebrows.
Don't try and do fancy things to make your skin look better, let your therapist see what your skin is like.
keep your routine the same as you usually would. Literally like cleaning your house before the cleaner comes round. -come on!
Bring up any skin issues, you have. Having gone over my skincare routine. My facialist said my routine and skin were really good, but did agree with me that I had a few dry patches and my cheeks were a little dryer than usual. She also told me I had some dryness on my chin. Which I hadn't spotted. I am thinking weather and central heating are the main factors.
Don't touch your face after your facial. Just let the products marinate. It will feel gorgeously soft but this will minimise the amount of bacteria coming into contact with your face.
Try to avoid drinking alcohol/ coffee/ fast food 24hrs before and after your facial. It can be drying to the skin.

3. Hair and Make up

Avoid wearing any makeup to your appointment. It wastes time as it will need to be cleansed off.

Wearing makeup also isn't advised for up to 24 hours after your facial.

If you are uncomfortable not wearing makeup for that long, wear sunglasses, work from home, go to a facility near your home to minimise contact with people.

I suggest a bun. It is out of your face during the facial and is kept off your face after. This means any product in your hair wont touch your new sexy ass face.

Try and keep transferable hair product residue to a minimum.-I once put leave in conditioner in my hair having forgotten about my appointment. I just took a scarf to wrap my hair and let my therapist know.

4. Comfortable clothing

Wear comfortable clothing. You will be in one position for a while. This is to relax your mind as well as pamper/ treat your face. So don't wear something too constrictive.- I usually go for leggings , a slouchy tee or jumper and a vest underneath which can easily be pulled down.

Also smelly feet - we also have those battered converse we love that are a bit smelly. Facial/ massage day is NOT the day to be wearing them as your feet will stink. Probably ruining your experience of tranquillity and assaulting your therapists nostrils. Sure they finish off your sports luxe/ casual outfit perfectly but lets not yeah!

5. Pain

Extractions hurt! It's not unbearable but it does hurt. I had excess sebum on my nose. My nostril area hurt the most but it isn't a lingering pain once it is done, it's done.
Facials also include chest and shoulder massage. I carry about 80% of my stress and tension in my shoulders which means that when properly massaged it can hurt. You will feel an ache the next day BUT so much better, mobile and lighter.

6. Relax and enjoy it.

Really immerse yourself in the experience and take the time to chill.
Communicate with your facialist
You may feel tired a few hours later, which is normal for facials and massages.
Be ready to glow! you may also be a little flushed/ red depending on your complexion.

7. Observe.

Look the products your facialist is using and what feels nice on your skin. I usually take a picture on my phone at some point before or after my treatment.

Don't be pressured by sales jargon! You don't have to buy the products that were used on your face. wait a while and see if you like them.

As this is relaxing your eyes will be closed most of the time but try and remember a few hand movements your facialist uses and try a few at home.

Post treatment. See what your skin looks and feels like. In some cases, people notice their skin may breakout slightly or become a little oilier too. This is often due to your face having a super specialist cleanse, that it doesn't get on a daily basis and the purging of toxins. Extra oil is being produced due to this. In a few days it should be fine. If you have a rash or prolonged breakout steer clear of those products in future.

Current favourites: nail edit staples

I have really been taking the time, recently to do my nails and wanted to share a few current favourites with you.

I love nail varnish and have a pretty good collection but sometimes I honestly don't have the time.

Recently however. I have been taking those 10-15 minutes to just chill out, choose a colour and clear my mind as they dry.

Neutral tones and grungey feeling nails are an all year round favourite.
These have been my go to choices.

Current favs:

Barry M picks:

Grey and Blue from the Barry M classic range

Barry M is one of my absolute favourite affordable nail companies.

They always have large range of colours and finishes to choose from.

They also seem to last forever, I have had one nail varnish from their classic range for 10 years and it still perfect- no word of a lie. I t has only recently been replaced.

MUA pick:

Midnight is a really pretty metallic shade and only costs £1.

MUA is a very trend led brand with a very low price point.

So it is great for checking out new colours without having to spend too much.

Essie pick:

Vested Interest Is a really striking greyish toned teal green.

Essie is another brand that is of great quality and has excellent colour ranges.

The tones are always pretty cool.
They can be a little pricey but shopping online or going to TK Maxx like I did can save your a fair bit of money.

OPI pick:

OPI Brazil Collection - I Sao Paulo Over There

This is such a stunning colour and just adds something to an outfit, as well as making your hands look beautiful.

It is totally an understated statement colour.
Again OPI Can be pricey so look around.

I also found this in TK Maxx for £2.99 or £3.99 saving over £7.

Primark pick (In Stores)

019 At 80p this is the cheapest polish in my edit.
The colour appears a little different in the bottle.
Which is what attracted my attention but it is a pretty deep petrol denim colour.

Kiko picks:

226 Rouge Noir, 508 Rose Sand and 317 Dark Antique Pink from the Kiko nail lacquer range.

Kiko is one of those undercover cult beauty brands, that totally deserve the hype.

They have very affordable items that rival and surpass much bigger brands.

I will however say that without a top coat 317 does chip after a day or 2.
However it is still such a pretty neutral blush colour in real life.

COLOURPOP UK Haul: Impressions and UK shipping (basic starter kit for dark skin)

Woop woop finally guys, finally I have some ColourPop in my life!

As I said in my Blogger Beauty Box post.
February is my birthday month and I went into full "treat yo'self" mode.
I just decided to get myself a few little things here and there and let the parcels roll in all month.

I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on these.
As I am pretty sure like many bloggers have.

I remember seeing a woman on youtube, who had pretty much every colour in early 2014 I believe.

I promptly sent it to my friend like uhhh yes, we need some of that sexiness ASAP and waiting for it to become available in the UK....

Unfortunately ColourPop still don't deliver to the UK.

(They have our spelling of colour but you don't deliver here?!)- woe is me yada yada, you get it I just couldn't wait any more.

So as the clock struck midnight on February 1st, I took the plunge and placed my first order.

The only way to get it to the UK is to use a courier service.
As you can imagine.

I have had a lot of time to check out courier websites and ColourPop, reviews, swatches and hauls and compile a list of things I wanted to try.

I decided to chose things that would be the foundation of collection.
A basic starter kit for dark skinned folk, if you will.

I went through my original list and cut it down ruthlessly, to things I really wanted and that would fit that brief.
Making sure I stuck to a reasonable budget.

This is also important to keep your overseas shipping costs down.
I am happy to say there are many products on the website, that cater to several skintones.

This time around, I mainly chose lip products as I will get more use out of them.

The products on the website are between $5 and $8 for individual items, which is incredibly affordable against the pound.

At this time this is an equivalent of £3.47 to £5.55.

I also signed up for their newsletter which snagged me a $5 welcome discount.

I am really into grungey tones and the colours I chose work well with this.
I chose liquid lipsticks and matte lipstick formulas as I love a matte lip!

Colourpops strength definitely lies in their liquid lipsticks.
From the selection I picked up I am most impressed with the liquid lipsticks and highlighters.
That is not to say however I don't like the matte lippie stixs, I just don't think they are the second coming.

*Each product type in order of favs*

Ultra Matte Lip $6 each

Lax -vampy darkened brown berry

Limbo -neutral chocolate brown

Tulle -dusty pinkish mauvey brown

Chilly chilli - orange pinkish brown

The ultra matte liquid lipsticks are very forgiving and not as drying on me as other formulas.

Chilly Chilli seems to have a more watery formula than the others and has started to separate on occasion. However hasn't leaked yet and I am keeping it at an angle to be safe.
It isn't streaky thankfully just a lot more watery.

I also luckily haven't had any issue with the LAX formula.
Which has had reports of being patchy. My one applies great.

Tulle is also interesting pink tone, that warms up in tone the longer it is on my lips, making it a little darker and more appealing to we wearing it more often.

I tested out the ultra matte lips thoroughly and found that they are pretty much immovable unless you eat greasy/ oily foods. I had them on for at least 6 hours
. Then I saw some transfer and rubbing off in the middle of my bottom lip.

Which makes sense as you remove them with oil based products.

On myself however I didn't require a touch up as the area that rubbed away was small and not visible to anyone else.

Matte Lippie Stix $5 each

Ellarie - deep browned berry red

Bichette - dark red

Pitch - 60% dark chocolate and a splash of milk

They have a vanilla scent to varying degrees, similar to the famous MAC scent.
Browns/ neutrals are my my jam but surprisingly I wasn't blown away by Pitch.
It is nice to have in my collection but yeah.

In terms of the texture, I would say they are very creamy and moisturising and take a fairly long time to become matte.

I would describe them as semi matte as it took at least an 20 minute before I noticed that the sheen had settled to a matte.

In future I would be more interested in the colour pay off which is good rather than the level of matte.
Bichette is a really beautiful statement red and Ellarie looks even more striking with a lipliner.
Both stain the lips when wiped off.

Highlighter $8 each

Avalon - warm golden peachy bronze

Butterfly beach - mid tone silver/ gold flecked iridescent combo

The highlighters are just beautiful and super pigmented.

I chose 2 stunning pearlised shades.

One gorgeous peachy warm toned bronze shade and a mid toned light iridescent gold tone.

They have they same texture as the ColourPop eyeshadows.

The highlight texture is so different to the touch, just like that of their eyeshadows and it is encouraged to apply with the finger.

However they can be applied with a highlighting/ fan brush.

I really like the fact that ColourPop display the pigments on a variety of skin tones.

Although limited to 3, they are far ahead of most companies that don't display on models of different ethnicities or solely showcase the product on a Caucasian model.

At least you can see how the product changes tonality and work from there on how it will look on you.

Shipping

Shipping was very easy and quick, it was 9 days from ordering to delivery at my house.

A simple breakdown of ordering to delivery:

Ordered from ColourPop website - 1st Feb (midnight)

ColourPop dispatched to Borderlinx - 2nd Feb

Borderlinx hub received and processed the shipment - 5th Feb

After a clarification email to ensure postage was correct and releasing my order, shipment was then released on the 5th feb (evening) .

Final Arrival - 9th Feb (Morning)

*please remember that Americans add their VAT at checkout.

It isn't inclusive like here so budget for that.

Although ColourPop is inclusive of VAT, Borderlinx was not and VAT was added at checkout.*

My Borderlinx experience was very easy.

From signing up, to the explanation on how the service worked and receiving my individual overseas address.

I found out about this courier service myself and saw a first hand review from The blushing giraffe.

There wasn't a sign up fee and my sign up was done in seconds.
I also picked up a few presents for friends that will not be shown on here, that put my delivery price up a little.

My postage etc came to $40. Making each individual item (shown) about $7 (approx £4.87) including postage each.

I wasn't charged customs fees luckily, as I would have been fuming.

Thankfully I have never been charged. Fingers crossed.

You will also find that Borderlinx has many discounts for shipping once you sign up too.

For an alternative shipping company checkout Jasmine talks beauty post, who always gives thorough info and reviews.

Colourpop is also available from individual sellers on Amazon and eBay, if this whole process sounds like a palava and you are absolutely desperate to try something.

However I am not willing to be swindled, shegged and scammed by opportunists who target beauty lovers and tack on astronomical mark ups.

So just be prepared to be absolutely ripped off.
In my most deepest desperation I won't pay silly prices like those being bandied about.
Not paying £35 for a $5 product!
So it worked out cheaper for me per product to order from the USA and also allowed me to choose from the full selection of products on the website.

So that was my ColourPop haul!
My starter kit that caters to POC, especially darkskinned people such as myself.
Products that I know will suit me and that have surprised me with their versatility too.
I have been so excited to really test out these products and am really loving the their liquid lipsticks and highlighters.

A blogger herself. As a way for bloggers and brands to connect and discover each other as well as new products.

Vicky sources products, manufactures the boxes and sends out between 30-50 of these carefully curated beauty boxes herself each month.

I really like the idea of a beauty box created by a blogger for bloggers with the option of buying them on an adhoc basis.
Also the fact that it will have a minimum of FIVE FULL SIZE products for £10 including P+P in excellent value for money.

February is my Birthday month (I am claiming the whole month for me lol) and I decided to gift myself little treats throughout.
Now that my actual birthday is over.
This box is one of them.
This is actually my first Blogger Beauty Box and I am not disappointed.

Once I saw the delivery tweet go out.

I eagerly awaited delivery and rushed to the door.

Face mask and hoover head in hand ready to see what goodies awaited me.

DHC Mineral Mask rrp £29

This is great timing.

This has been on my beauty list for a while and I am happy to finally have it.

DHC is renowned for their skincare, especially their masks and cleansing oil.

I have tried the mask twice so far and like it a lot.

It is a light weight mixture of clay and botanics that doesn't suck all the oils and moisture from your face.

Even when fully dry, my face is mobile and once removed my face feels fresh but not stripped.

which is important as my cheeks are currently a little dry and my inner cheeks is where I have slight pore visibility.
This will come in handy during colder months.

Threads Angel lashes in Emiloo rrp £9

I know Threads more for their threading and nails, which I am a fan of.
Than their eyelash range as I am not the biggest falsie user.

The band is very flexible and light due to the handmade lashes being made with feather weight technology.

These unfortunately do not suit me at all.
They are way too dense for my eyes and preference.

Something a little more wispy would suit me better but the good thing about a beauty box is that, if it doesn't suit you it can be gifted to a friend or family member.

As I didn't apply this to my eye with the glue but just placed it near my eye, I am totally happy to pass this on.
Another great thing is the glue is fragrance and latex free so you wont have any flare ups if you have an allergy you aren't aware of.

Merumaya Bi-Phase Plus Eye Makeup Remover rrp £14.50

Now here is a product that I know well!

When this launched in 2014.
I did manage to get a few samples from a friend and really enjoyed the ease of makeup removal.

Testing it again over the last few days has been a joy, as it didn't sting or leave my eyes irritated.

I don't wear eyeshadow as often as I used to but mascara is an essential and I never miss an opportunity to add some winged eyeliner.

I have even tried it on my eyebrows, now that I use a gel pomade.

The bi-phase and hydrating gel formulation has removed those quickly and without dragging my delicate eye area.

I always shake the bottle to ensure that I get a mixture of all the ingredients.

Created with feedback from long term customers, it is only natural this products gets so much praise in the blogging community.

PURISKIN by Vanessa Blake Cosmetics Lip Treat in clear rrp £16.99

PURISKIN Lip Treat is an organic naturally therapeutic botanical plant wax formulation.

Designed to maintain and relieve lip conditions.
Containing an SPF of 6 to 8 and added Vitamin E this moisturising emollient is great as a year round lip protectant.

Not only is this product vegetarian friendly, ethically made, non animal tested and paraben free they are customisable!

The Lip Treat comes in clear, scented and a taste free formulation to minimise irritation to sensitive skin.

However they do offer bespoke options such as scents, spf, extra moisture and colour.

I have spoken before about biting my lips which can lead to dry patches so I am looking forward to trying this out.

Madame LA LA West Coast bronzing serum rrp £25.00

This is a bronzing self tanning serum for the face catering to all skin tones.

Infused with Coconut water & green tea to hydrate whilst the bronzer works on giving you that bright "LA glow".
The bronzer is also infused with antioxidants, Vitamin C , CQ10,Vitamins A and E.

I really like the formula and consistency of the serum and it applies evenly.

I have tested this with a foundation brush and my fingers.

Both work well and the serum develops gradually over a few hours and fades naturally on me with visible difference after 3/4 days.

I tested this first on my inner wrist as this is one of the lightest areas of my body that is exposed to the elements and I wanted to see how the serum would look and develop.

I am super happy the serum isn't orange or muddy and has full coverage but clarity to it.

In regards to staining, I didn't experience any major staining on my fingers after washing.

There was a slight tint but that was easily removed by using a bit of coconut oil.

There was absolutely no transfer on to my clothing and the serum dries quickly too

*FYI*

Black people and people of colour can and do use fake tan/ bronzers.

It is more common than you think.
My friend has been putting tan on her legs for over 14 years!

These products are not really marketed to us mainly because we already have melanin and the difference may not be as obvious. Amongst other reasons.

However speaking for myself, using a product like this would be less to change/ deepen my skin tone and more to even out/ add a bronzey glow.

This will be amazing for my body and face in summer.

When I want to look glowy and bronzed without putting too much on my face.

As well as in winter when we too get "pale or ashy" to varying degrees and warmth/ sun-kissed skin deserts those not in hot climes.
An excellent all rounder!

I am always on the look out for skincare and I have never heard of this brand before.

JR Naturorganic is an ethical, natural and organic skincare brand based in the UK.

Focused on providing affordable and effective organic skincare made from quality natural ingredients.

The box contained samples of their gentle cleansing milk and a hydrating mist from their Madarin & Chamomile range targeting normal, combination and sensitive skin.

Containing a essentials extract blend of chamomile, marigold, lavender and mandarin for their soothing, balancing and calming properties..

I have been testing out their mist which I really like it so far.

It lasts longer when sprayed, so I have transferred half of it into a clean spritz bottle.

I am very impressed with this box.

Especially value for money and the diversity of products sourced.

This box is worth approximately £95 by my calculations excluding the samples which is amazing.

It is a very well rounded box so hats off to vicky!!!

Handbag heroes #2

Hi Loves,

I am back with part two of my Handbag Heroes.

Those little things that make pounding the streets of London smooth sailing.

I have been sectioning my bag into pouches since my Uni days and I found it really worked for me.
So just kept doing it.

Considering I am not the most organised in my personal life, It is surprising how organised my bag actually is.

As I enjoyed going through my pouch in my last post and having a little declutter,

You can check my Handbag Heroes #1 if you missed it.

I decided to do another one as I have a new pouch I have been loving and it gives me a chance to see what is actually in there.

My newest pouch* was actually gifted to me last year by the lovely team over at LYDC London after taking part in a #FBLCHAT and being picked as one of those who they thought interacted well and enjoyed talking to.

This iridescent, metallic very on trend featuring pantone colours of 2016, serenity and rose quartz purse/pouch turned up a few days later.
It being a totally different colour and texture to my other pouch is also useful, so score.

Here's my second set of handbag essentials.

Oyster Card

This is the one thing I guard fiercely lol, it's a London thing!

Especially now as all public travel transactions are cash free and using my debit card just seems like a hassle to me.

Having experienced that moment of heart bursting, mindless burrowing deep into my bag thinking I have lost my card.
Whilst being miles from home is something that haunts most Londoner and is just not the one!

Mints & sweeties

I am obsessed with mints.

Give me that tingling menthol freshness any day of the week.

Trebor XXX is my all time fav but I have been leaning towards chewy ones hence the Mentos.

I also always have a few Jakemans Menthol & eucalyptus lozenges because I am a granny lol!

There is also rarely an excuse for bad breath and as it is a pet peeve of mine, I make sure I am not guilty of that eye watering faux pas.

Perfume Atomisers

This the best and safest/easiest way for me to carry my perfumes around.

Without worrying about breaking them or just being super clunky and heavy.

I have about 4 of these which I got from eBay.
This also means I have the option of scent combos and using my perfumes more sparingly.
They are of really good quality and incredibly cheap (99p each).

My current scents on rotation are Moringa and Vanilla body mists from the body shop.
They are super affordable and very different.

Plasters

I don't often use these but they are good to have none the less.

Vintage compact mirror

This is actually belongs to my mum.

I like to say she gave it to me like a heirloom butshe prefers the version of me *ahem* aprehending it as a teen.

I like my version better!
It is very dear to me.

Emergency funding (money)

This should actually be £10 but I kept spending it, so I reduced it to £5.
Clearly there is £2 on in my picture so I can't be trusted!
In my defence I will say for the last 3 years £5 has been in there but I ended up breaking it a few days ago.

I always keep a few quid separate from my purse just in case of an emergency.

This is a habit I actually got into at secondary school and it really comes in handy.

Tissue

This is such a must, just like hand sanitiser.

Just to have for general hygiene but because this is London.
So either you will find something super vile on the tube or somebody crying uncontrollable on the metropolitan line.

Tissues are great for both.

Death by homemade double chocolate cheesecake & custard

I don't know why but I have been craving custard lately, day dreaming about it.

For the longest time I loathed the stuff.

Powdered/ tinned is not an option for me but I even hated the homemade from scratch good stuff!

Then one glorious day in my in my 14th year. I reluctantly tried some and YES, It was amazing.

I have been dreaming of creamy vanilla and cinnamon infused custard oozing down the side of a no bake chocolate caramel cheesecake for the last two weeks and finally got around to making it.
It that usual?
Cheesecake and custard-I don't know but it tastes mighty good.

Ingredients for custard:

250ml double cream

3 free range eggs

2 teaspoons mixed spice or cinnamon powder

1 teaspoon cornflour

1 teaspoon caster sugar

1 vanilla pod (split and scraped)

Method:

Whisk your eggs, corn flour, sugar, vanilla and cinnamon together in a bowl and pour into a new sauce pan.
Heat the double cream in a sauce pan on a low heat then bring up to boiling point.
When the double cream is hot pour into egg mixture slowly whilst continuously stirring (if you added the vanilla pod to cream remove it).
Place the saucepan back on a low heat still stirring the custard mixture until it has thickened.
keep at a low heat to avoid lumps. If it is too thick for you, add a little bit of milk/ cream and continue stiring away from the cooker.

On to the Cheesecake.
If your house is anything like mine.
It is likely that you will have a fair few snacks leftover from christmas and new years.
Those ones just left to languish in the back of the cupboard because we just can't be bovved/ can't face to eat them any more.

A great way to get rid of your chocolately bits is to put them in desserts.

Ingredients for base and filling:

150g Oreo biscuits (remove stuffing)

70g of butter

150g dark chocolate (chopped/grated)

50g milk chocolate

400g cream cheese

100g caster sugar

4 tablespoons cocoa powder

130ml cream cheese
*I also made a ganache topping, as you can see in the picture.
My design didn't go well. Lets not dwell on it lol!!*

Method:

Put your biscuit base into a food processor and pulse in to crumbs or into a food storage bag and bash until fine. Then add melted butter and 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

Form base by pressing the mixture into tin of your choice. Leave in the freezer to set for at least an hour.
If you haven't' eaten the oreo stuffing, you can smear this across the base. I also added some salted caramel spread as I wanted to use it up.
Melt chocolate over a bain marie on a low heat. Allow to cool a bit.
Leave cream cheese out of the fridge to soften and mix leftover cocoa powder, sugar and cooled down melted chocolate together.
Pour mixture into the base tin and chill in the fridge for a minimum 1 hour.
Serve your sexy delicious cheesecake, bask in all the praise thrown at you.

And that's it guys chuck a few frozen berries on for texture , flavour and as part of your 5 a day .

I want to say this could serve 8-9 but in reality I am going to say a serving of 6.

So I went a little sale happy over the last few days of 2015 and the first week of 2016.

Just a tad press pay now with delirious abandon, during that no mans land time zone of the 27th Dec-3rd Jan.
Whilst catching up with friends/family and watching TV.
I hunted out great deals in my festive flannel pj's.

2015 was very much about spending less on myself and shopping my own closet/ beauty stash etc and as the general sales were not a good as expected, I went into total "treat yo'self" mode when I found a excellent deal.
I also needed to replenish said stash or how can I shop it?

I wanted to stock up on some of my essential French pharmacy skincare and Escentual, with their sales/ varying codes didn't disappoint!

Especially in the UK where the weather is often conflicted and can really play havoc with my facial hydration levels.

Vichy Aqualia Thermal Lips - Soothing and Repairing Balm

Great for soothing lips and creating a lasting barrier between delicate lip skin and the elements.
This is a must have for me as winter is not only harsh but I have a habit of biting my lips as explained in my skincare savers/saviours post.
So I enjoy revolving my lip protectants and discovering new ones that work for me.
I like that this doesn't disappear after a few minutes.

These are great balms and creams to have in your stash.
As great for scrapes/ burns/ bruises as they are for irritations/dryness and soothing skin.
They are incredibly nourishing to the skin as well as helping the skin to heal.
These are also very adaptable and some can be used as intensive lip balms/ hand or foot treatments.

So those are a few of my top picks, I just had to stock up on as they have served me well before.

I picked these up as part of a promotion and have used a few already. They are a quick and easy way to pamper my skin.
So yep great masks to keep stock up on.

Superdrug Naturally Radiant Hot Cloth Cleanser

This is one of my all time fav cream cleansers.

I always stock up on this as it just makes my skin feel amazing and really takes off the day so well.

I find that The Superdrug naturally radiant range works really well for me.

For a highstreet drug store range I think they are well formulated and my skin really benefits.

New buys:

Superdrug Hydrating Moisturiser

I have actually tried this before briefly but never owed one myself .

It is actually for men but if it isnt pumped full of "testosterone/ man ingredients" then I am happy to use it. As it is just marketing and packaging targeted towards men.

The formula is nice and moisturising and makes a great hand cream too.

Superdrug Naturally Radiant Radiance Balm

I grabbed this as part of a BOGOF deal as I really like the naturally radiant range and really like the texture.

It isn't a balmy texture like I thought it would be.

It has fine golden flecks that add to the brightening effect.
A positive is that the flecks aren't chunky which is great for not making any visible pores look like craters.

I haven't been using it long enough to speak on any other qualities but so far it's a thumbs up so far.

Biore Charcoal Cleanser

I really enjoy using charcoal products and have seen really good reviews.

So I intrigued to see how this compares to other charcoal products I have tried previously.

Superdrug Clearly Youthful Glycolic Peel

Glycolic Is always good to keep in your arsenal.

Although this is targeted to more problematic or ageing skin.

I still wanted to give it a try as I love smooth bright skin and as I like most people get the occasional blemish.

Something to help combat that whilst plumping and evening out textured areas is always welcome.

Superdrug Clearly Youthful Resurfacing Night Serum

All I have heard is rave reviews about this and I am so keen to try it.
It always seems to be sold out in store,

so I was so happy to finally nab this.

I am currently testing serums so I will begin using this in the next few weeks but having tested it on my hand it sinks in really well. It didn't leave any odd residues and isn't tacky once dried.

Manuka Doctor ApiRevive Manuka&Tea Tree Antiseptic Gel

This this definitely one for the beauty SOS kit.

Tea tree, honey and propolis are great for their healing, renewal and antiseptic properties.

All helping to soothe skin irritations

London Health show 2016: An intimate yet informative affair*

Last Thursday I wrapped up warm, slipped into some stylish yet comfy shoes and headed up to the Olympia London for the London Health Show*.

As we all know health, beauty and wellness is big business and ever expanding in the UK.
What with bloggers flourishing in these areas too, what better way to see what is happening in the market than to attend an event?

The London Health Show specifically showcased distributors from all sectors within the health and wellness market and what would be at the forefront for 2016.

This was much smaller than the exhibitions/ events I have attended in the past, so it really gave us a chance to meet and chat with distributors, industry insiders and discover new products properly.

I took my mum along for company as she is a qualified Holistic therapist and loves trade exhibitions.

The floor was divided into 6 sections. Nutrition & supplements, beauty, complementary health, sports and fitness, organic and natural product and healthcare technology.
Not only did the event offer access to distributors but offered live demonstrations, conferences, CPD workshops and presentations with a variety of speakers.

Obviously I targeted Beauty, food and complementary therapy first as who doesn't like to be beautified, whilst eating great healthy snacks and being massaged by a professional?

In between browsing we enjoyed stopping to watch a hulafit demo as well as listen to a few speakers.

Our particular highlights were a branding, pr and marketing tools workshop given by Cheryl Hersey, the Director at Action Pr .

We also found Director and chair of BANT Miguel Toribio-Mateas incredibly interesting.

He gave a workshop on personal nutrition which was insightful.

A few of my stand out distributors were:

Queen Of Oil - The whole team was lovely and gave us an excellent discount on their 100% Argan oil.

Sheila’s Natural products- were really attentive and knowledgeable.

Inspiral - was one of the busiest stands and for good reason. They had great banter and made sure that they engaged each person. We walked away with a lot of kale-Os snacks!

Attis UK -As a lover of natural affordable skincare. This stand drew my eye straight away and we left with a few goodies to try out.

I really enjoyed my time at the London Health Show 2016.

Not only was it great to meet distributors who are passionate about their products but it is also a excellent way to network, find new brands, gain insightful information about products and receive excellent discounts!

Marilou Bio Cleansing Gel review

My face feels so unbelievably silky and soft!
The Marilou Bio Cleansing Gel is another buy from my finding natural skincare haul
and I am really enjoying it.

I didn't start using it until after I had finished reviewing
my Alba botanica Hawaiian facial range bits and The balm balm frankincense deep cleansing balm which I seriously adore.
Then I got on to this one asap.
It's has been a few months now so I think it is a perfect time to review how my is feeling / reacting to this product.

First of all I have to say my skin always looks radiant after using this and after about 4 days I saw a clarity to my complexion.
I don't have dull skin per se but I do notice when my face isn't as bright as usual.
So I love products that add luminosity and this does the job especially as it is winter.
I found that using the Marilou bio cleansing gel and My Madara clarifying toner* after kept my complexion bright and smooth even if I had a few blemishes.

Derived from 98% natural ingredients.
This light cleanser has great slip whilst allowing grip for massage.
Once smoothed over the face it doesn't have a traditional foaming which I like and quickly gets working on the skin.
Only a small amount is needed and if you want a more visible lather of sorts,
it is best applied to damp skin instead of wet as recommended.
My skin feels clean but not dry as with some other gel cleansers and can confirm it really is formulated for all skin types.
There is no dryness or tight feeling and my face just feels lovely.
The lack of dryness is especially useful now that we are experiencing snow and super cold weather.
It is incredibly gentle and non stripping.
The minty cornflower fragrance is subtle and the glycerin definitely ups the moisture
and glossy feeling post cleanse.
I would definitely say this is a second cleanser for me once I have removed any makeup and want to ensure my face is totally impurity free.

This is a great everyday gel cleanser and can be used daily.
Which is a plus as some gels are very drying on non oily skin.
I have normal/ combination and have really enjoyed it.
It lasts a good while and I still have more than half a bottle left.
It is very affordable yet effective so I would definitely buy this again and am looking forward to trying other products from the range.

Makeup Revolution haul: dupes, highlighters and thinking outside the box

Ok so I have finally, Fi-nal-ly done a Makeup Revolution haul!

Not a lipstick here and an eyeshadow there.

A proper haul!

Makeup revolution has been on my radar for the longest time and I just hadn't got around to ordering a proper haul.

So after honing my long list of goodies I was ready to order.

That epic Christmas discount didn't disappoint either.

So the packaging is super basic but black is classic and luckily it seems sturdy enough, so no issues there from me.

My heart was set on the Radiance highlighter palette for the longest time.

So that was first to go into my basket.

I am a fan and it's super affordable.
I am all about the glow, that delicious thing that makes me glow to the gawds!
The glow is necessary when artfully done!
Having said that I am not trying to have Tim Peake spot me either lol .
So this is a good one as this
palette is more of a subtle highlight trio, for a more finely milled finished natural glow.
However it is very buildable if you want a stronger finish.

Peach Lights was also a no brainer for me and that was swiftly added to the basket.

It is slightly cooler in tone but not ashy because of that iridescent peach tone which my skin really picks out.

As soon as I clocked the Baked bronzers, I knew they would make amazing highlighters for me as well other deeper skintones!

I picked up Rock on world and it is beautiful. Just beautiful.

Great pigment and easy to blend.
The quality is so buttery soft and it is pretty much a dupe for Global glow MSF by MAC. With a much cheaper price tag.
Rock on world appears more bronze in pan but they are pretty much spot on.
I am SO impressed with this bronzer and obviously need more!
Lightly layering rock the world with peach lights is also stunning giving lit from within effortlessly ethereal look.

Baked Blushers Hard Day, Make Love Instead and All I think about is you, were must haves for me.

I wasn't sure about these once they arrived and actually planned to return them as I thought they might be too ashy for me on seeing them.
I am so glad I didn't! If they hadn't of worked out I could always give them to a friend. But luckily for me they did.

As with my Kiko haul, I am switching up the product purpose and will actually be using the baked blushes as highlighters primarily.
I have to say they work amazingly well.

After swatching them I was impressed but after leaving them to become accustomed to my body temp and body oils etc for a few minutes they looked even better.

Unexpectedly I picked up the Agonise Eye Dust.
I have strayed away from eyeshadows for a long while.
So haven't really purchased anything new but this gorgeous colour caught my eye.

I think it is deceptively simple but can be transformed into some awesome looks and would absolutely kill!
There was a bit of fall out which can get glitter everywhere but if handled correctly it is so beautiful.

And finally Lips!
What is a makeup haul of mine without a few lip products?

I have heard about the softness of the amazing Lipliners and can attest to that.
I grabbed Rebel and Cherry Red.
Although they are a little cool toned than I would usually go for.
They aren't ashy and are great for changing the hues of warmer toned lipsticks especially.

I LOVE deep lipsticks.
I wear them all year round.
So obviously I grabbed this beautiful brown berry toned #Liphug in Still missing my baby.
The finish is creamy on the lips but has low shine and excellent coverage. Liking it a lot.

The Atomic Lipstick Make Me Tonight is very deep and vampy which I adore but it does need to be built up for solid intensity and lasting power.
However for the price it is bloody excellent. I does have a gel like slip texture to it which is different too.

I also picked two Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquers in Vamp and Rebel.

A comfortable inbetween of matte but not moisture depriving.
So far Vamp is my fav (big surprise).
It comes out as a deep purple with grey smokey undertones and the colour pay off is good but it will not last whilst eating etc.
So definitely carry for reapplication.
You can remove with a wet wipe but to minimise tugging oil is best.

So that's it guys.
I am VERY happy with everything I got.
I love that everything I got is of a quality much higher than the prices paid for it.
They are already becoming firm staples and go to products.
They are super affordable and with discounts often being added even more so.
So I will def be going back for a few more key products.

Facetheory Skincare haul

So if you haven't heard about the natural UK personalised skincare brand Facetheory, likelihood is you have been doing a good job of living under a rock!

I came across Facetheory early last year when there was considerable hype surrounding the brand.

Especially in the bloggersphere!

As with most bloggers I have a long and extensive list of products I really like the look of and want to try and Facetheory was one of them.

I didn't order straight away as I wanted to see how the company progressed and see reviews from a variety of bloggers.

As a blogger I think it's important to be aware of what is out there/ cutting edge but I also think it is just as important not to jump on the bandwagon and keep your content authentic.

Which is why I waited for the hype to settle a little bit.

I really like their simple message and the fact that they use natural ingredients (check out my finding natural skincare post), are paraben free, against animal testing and another of their usp's being that they have a questionnaire to ensure your skincare is catered to you.

Of course you don't have to stick to their results, if you think something would be better suited.

However it steers you in the right direction and gives you a place to start.

Facetheory also often have pretty good discounts, which is just dandy for a savvy shopper like me!

And so after that intro lets get into the actual haul.

I picked up 3 items and with a 40% discount code all 3 came to under £20!

Can't beat it.

Gentle Skin Cleanser C1
Containing avocado, coconut, silk and apricot.

Glycolic Exfoliating Cleanser (E1)
Has natural micro pumice stones. As well as glycolic and salicylic acid.

Moisturiser for Oily Skin M3

Packed full of hyaluronic acid, vitamins E & C and passionfruit extract.

I have just started using these and I have to say the signature cleanser and supergel moisturiser are standing out to me so far.

The moisturisers texture surprised me as I expected it to be more of a gel like consistency but having tested it I like it a lot and I also think it would make a really nourishing hand cream.

I noticed after using it on my hands it didn't deteriorate or change after washing my hands a few times.

Obviously that is my first impression and I will be doing a proper trial.

So far I like the quality of the products and as I know my skin thrives on natural oils etc I am excited to get started.

Handbag heroes #1

Hi Loves and a happy new year!!!!

So this is something different.
More of a what's in my bags, bag situation.

I decided to do a handbag heroes post about the other things that are always in my bag other than the usual umbrella and mint staples (this is London umbrella hasn't left my bag since year seven lol).

I keep my beauty ish/ miscellaneous things that I need in here so lets get started.

Lucas' Pawpaw ointment

This is my go to bag all purpose balm of choice.
I always have this in my bag and usually a back up in case I lose it but these last so long.

Medicine

I don't have medication I take regularly so this is usually some ibuprofen, hayfever tabs, energy tabs etc I like to be prepared.
There are parts of me that are incredibly organised.
To the point where people say I am such a mum as I anticipate your needs 0.o - I am not a pusher!
I like to be prepared!
I do get migraines and although I have a high pain threshold, life is better for all if my migraine is seen to asap.

Baylis & Harding Beauticology Grapefruit & Raspberry Handcream

ummmm the smell!
I do have my staples when it comes to handcream (checkout my winter skincare saviours) but love to try new ones and this is proving to be pretty moisturising and light.

Hairbands

I buy these in bulk from primark. It is like 50 of varying sizes for £1. Which is a bargain.
They don't snag on my hair and if they snap I am ok with the price. They are also great for multipurpose quick fixes.

Lipsticks & lip pencil

I usually have 2 lipsticks and a brown lip pencil in my pouch.
I will usually all throw in whatever lip product of the day if it is something different.
Currently I am in LOVE with brown/ deep berry brown lips so my choices at the moment are Diva & Antique velvet by MAC.
Which are very similar.- I know seriously, I know!

Blotting paper

It gets pretty muggy rushing around all day so these are a life saver for keeping your face excessively shine free yet still leaving the skin glowing. You can find these very cheaply on eBay.

Contact lenses

I am a frequent glasses wearer and occasionally wear contact lenses.
These are a spare back up in case I want to change my look or refresh my eyes.

Hand sanitiser

In any major city this is a must.

Especially in London when you are travelling on public transport.
People are DIRTY as ~~fuck!~~

So just keeping your hands clean saves you from having an unnecessary amount of germs on you.

If you work in an office with desk jumping or just a busy office this is a must also.

Get your anti bac wipes too!

My current one is Orla Kiely in geranium.

Simple Kind to Skin Moisture Boost Hydro Mist

This is a great travel size spritz to refresh the face during the day.

I actually discovered this when a friend brought it back from America for me and have only seen it once in the uk.

I had the good sense to buy 2 from the 99p shop of all places and will be sad when it is finished.
They are however great containers to reuse.

Hair product
This could be anything.
I received a sample years and and kept the container.
I now fill it with a small amount of gel for fly aways or conditioner.

Cork screw
yep, you read that right.
I keep a cork screw in my bag lol
I used to be a bar tender in my uni summer holidays and was given this for my little kit on my first day!
It's one of those fancy, I have every attachment under the sun MacGyver things.
I am also that person everybody asks for cocktail ideas, wine recommendation etc. As seen in my holiday spiced mulled cider recipe.
I even created a wedding cocktail called the J&J for my brothers wedding.
Stick with me kid, we won't be drinking white lightening at bus stops but a bit of Pinot at a picnic in a park and I am your woman!

Easy festive holiday spiced mulled cider

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas!

This is my only festive post and the final post of 2015.

So what better way to end 2015, than to toast the year passing and a new one beginning?

Here is my super easy, quick and delicious homemade mulled cider recipe.

You can find most of the ingredients knocking around the kitchen, which is great at this time of year.
This is greqt to make in advance and store in air tight containers. The flavours intensify and it is one thing off your to do list.

Ingredients

3 litres of cider- you can have 1 litre of dry

2 large cinnamon stick

3 cloves

1/2 a bottle of medium sweet white wine

1 vanilla pod

3 star anise
1 teaspoon of grated nutmeg

50g of sugar- soft sugar (if you don't like sugar don't add or use less)

2 heaped teaspoons of Marsala tea

200 ml dark rum (if you have it, that is fine)

6 cardamom pods

1 level teaspoon of mixed spice

1 bay leaf

3 oranges and one 1 lemon

1 orange and lemon peel

1 chopped apple

Method

Ok so you have all your ingridients.

Squeeze the juice from 3 oranges and 1 lemon. Then thinly slice zest.

If you have a muslin cloth going spare then place all your dry ingredients in there and tie it off.

If not then chuck your ingredients into a big pot, along with the cider, wine, sugar and scrapped vanilla pod.

You can sieve all ingridients once finished.

The mixture should be on a LOW heat and allowed to simmer for approximately 30-40 minutes.

If it is a little strong add a a cup of water and add until you are satisfied.

**Tip** You may find the citrus oils very strong if you put them in straight away.

Either place fruits in hot water for a few seconds then add to the mix.

Or add peel into the mix in the last 10 minutes of simmering.

This is also great with champagne or wine so get creative and mull what ever tipple takes your fancy!

This is an alcoholic drink mixture but is just as delicious with non-alcoholic drinks.
Remember guys, drink safely and my underagers -Apple juice will sustain you!

So that's my incredibly easy, show stopping mulled cider.

Your family will sing your praises and it shall be great.
Sit back and lap up the adulation.

Drink it hot, warm or even cold and its amazing!

So I am coming to you with a very special read of the month.

Oghosa of SincerlyOghosa,
asked me and along with other bloggers, if we would review her first E- book,
Sent from Heaven and being the bookworm that I am obviously I said Yes!
I have been so inconsistent with my book reviews so in the giving spirit of the holiday season.
Here is my second book review for December and from a blogger who seems to be going from strength to strength no less!

Set in modern day London. We follow Chioma Amara.

A woman cut down in her prime.

Taken from her son, just as their relationship was back on track and her determination to finally right wrongs and help give him the chance to live a fulfilled life.

Chioma seemingly can not catch a break! After becoming pregnant at university and having no other option once she is deserted by her boyfriend.
Chioma puts her son Sam into care with the promise to come back for him.
After several turbulent years Chioma and Sam are finally reunited.
However that is only the beginning of their struggle.

In death, Chioma doesn't catch a break either.
Despite being in the unearthly realm, Chioma is assigned to hell through no fault of her own.
Now on the verge of an eternity in purgatory, God steps in to save the day.
Having spotted Chiomas’ unblemished soul within, a crowd of those more deserving of hell.
God intervenes and gives Chioma one last chance at life, in order to help her son heal some his wounds and begin his own journey.
Chioma must return to earth and guide him to happiness, love and acceptance all before Christmas.

Now first off I have to say I am not particularly religious, I don’t often go in for Christmassy “feel good” cheer books or films because I just can’t with all the faux cheer and predictability.
This however keeps Christmas as a back drop to a wider story but is not all consuming.

Nor do I often go in for the self published religious fiction as I find them to be a bit zealous at times and find the cringe factor to be extraordinarily high.

That isn't to say however that I don’t enjoy books that have underlying religious themes/imagery.

A Christmas carol, Dan Brown books or even The chronicles of Narnia to name a few. I start with this as by not reading these genres often, it gives me a different view point.

What I do go for is a book that has something different or striking about it that touches me in some way. Oghosa has managed to find a niche in the booming supernatural fiction arena that I haven’t seen before and works really well with it. This alone makes it interesting and I am very intrigued to see if she expands on this in future.

I am really happy that I agreed to review Sent From Heaven.
As I said above I might not have gravitated towards it, if I had seen it. In many ways this is a very current book. Although a tried and tested formula (no spoilers) is used. Oghosa manages to make God personable and the idea of heaven and hell not so shrouded in mystery.
She cleverly worked in very familiar elements to great affect. I do think that certain characters could be fleshed out more and certain points in the book to be expanded upon more but considering this is her first fully self published piece, I think she has done very well.

I actually enjoyed reading this and if you are a person who revels in happy endings, Christmas feels, that quintessential Christmas spirit and possibly that person who has their tree up on the 1st of December this is definitely a book for you.
Equally if you are a bit more chilled like me, don't really go in for over the top excessive festivities and have an aversion to tinsel. You will enjoy it too. Alternatively this would make a great gift/ stocking filler for a loved one.
It is incredibly apparent how personal this story is to Oghosa on many levels and that passion is so clearly woven into the storyline.

This is a great book to remind you what life is actually about.
Finding and cherishing the people and things most important to you.

Reads of the month: December 2015

Hi Lovers,
Long time no review but I promise I have been reading!
So these are my new reads of the month.
These are two very different books.
Check them out below.

The girl next door

by Ruth Rendell (3.5 stars)

Flitting between the modern day and the cusp of WW2.

A buried tin containing the remnants of two severed hands, is the catalyst that brings a group of friends long since grown up back into each other lives.

Having grown up in a small Essex suburb together, it doesn't take long before old alliances and group hierarchy of what once was are firmly back in place.

Swept up in a murder investigation, old truths and buried memories are brought to the surface.

Rendell took an interesting route and didn't focus on the actual murderer but the children now well into adulthood.

The plot centers on how an incident that they didn't know had actually happened greatly impacted their lives.

As the group find each other again regret, lost chances, ageing and opportunities rear their head and some to detrimental effect.

Told from a much older generation struggling to find their place in the modern world was an excellent touch.

I found the use of older people making mistakes, feeling adrift and learning to live a life other than the one set out for them refreshing.

The role of being all knowing and wise is often afforded or foisted on older characters and this certainly isn't the case here.

I am a pretty fast reader but this is a slow burn so it took some sticking to.

Without giving the plot away I did find fault with the stereotypical scenes and internalised

misogynistic attributes in a few of the characters.

This often irritates me in books however one characters end story did go some way in redeeming this.

This is actually the last book Rendell before her death earlier this year.

So I think it will be very special to a lot of her keen followers.

Kitty Peck and the Child of Ill-Fortune by Kate Griffin (4 stars)

This engrossing historical mystery thriller set in Victorian London, follows fiery and fearless 17 year old Kitty Peck.

The newly untested heiress of Paradise, the underworld criminal empire formerly run by her grandmother Lady Ginger.

No longer one of the many girls working within her grandmothers music hall.

Kitty is now the boss and has to fight for the right to win and command all that lies within Paradise.

Desperate to find and be reunited with her banished brother Joey.

She embarks on a journey, where her life is placed in danger when she can not refuse a strangers plea for help and the chance to save a child.

Kitty and her friends lives are soon in danger as she unwittingly stumbles through her Grandmothers plans for her and those who have followed her back from Paris in pursuit of this child and bury a secret that could potential bring down the English empire.

This is actually the second book in this series and I didn't feel as though I had missed out on information at all. The first Kitty Peck and the Music Hall Murders is definitely on my list.

I found myself automatically reading kitty's parts in a proper hardcore cockney accent. Although there were cases of othering.

I felt a good percentage of the characters were well rounded and described well.

I really enjoyed this book and really felt as though I was immersed and living this adventure with Kitty.

I found that the author struck the right balance of Kitty being a young woman and suddenly having to don this mantle of responsibility brilliantly.

This follows the traditional penny dreadful style and although a little sketchy in places is very enjoyable.

Winter skin savers/ saviours 2015

Shea butter whip

This is a life saver in the colder months. It just keeps skin looking glowy and smooth.

Moisture is kept on lock.Which I am thankful for.

Ashy skin will not prosper here lol!

This is great all year round really but it really comes into its own when you need extra defence against the very cold and changeable weather, hot baths, heaters being on and general chill your skin experiences.

Here is my Shea butter whip recipe, that I swear by, your welcome!

Face oil (custom blend)

People can be a little scared of putting oils on the face but controlling the amount you use

with a dropper is handy and testing it to see how your skin reacts is always best.

If your face doesn't like it you can use it on your body.

For the last 2 years I have been making my own DIY custom oil blends.

I will do a post in future.

NipFab Hyaluronic Fix Body Gel

This is a great light gel formula that provides much needed moisture.

The hyaluronic element is a great way to promote moisture in the skin.

A great way to use this is layering it under Shea butter especially

on areas that maybe be exposed to water and cold more often such as hands.

Coconut oil

This is just LIFE! Coconut oil has been one of the super stars of 2015 and it really works well for me.

I am lucky enough to have skin that works well with coconut oil and doesn't suffer any comedogenic issues. This multi-purpose oil is a great one to have on your shelf.

The Body Shop Hemp hand protector

This is a long time holy grail product in my family. My mum has used this for donkey years.

A great handbag essential. It is thick and intensely creamy and nourishing.

This definitely is a winter defence product.

It doesn't smell that great but as you can see nearly every last drop has squeezed out as it is that great.

Sale times are great times to stock up for the year!

Alba Botanica mask

This has been one of my most prized finds of the year!

you can see my Alba Botanica Hawaiian facial range review here.

It is organic, paraben free and all that good stuff.

It is an affordable, long lasting non-abrasive exfoliating mask and has done wonders for my skin.

Madara Claryifying toner*

My skin really took to this toner so well and it has become a really good Autumn/winter toner.

Another non-abrasive exfoliant, which is keeping my small amount of pores minimised and my PH levels pretty much on point. I am really pleased to have found it.

Lucas' Pawpaw ointment

I have a weird thing I do where I bite my lips when I am thinking. I am doing it now!

This leads to me occasionally having a dry patch or two which I will nibble on subconsciously.

Hence a vicious unstoppable and annoying cycle ensues.

Bites lips, gets dry patch, nibbles on dry skin, rips off skin, apply balm and restart.

As a result of this, a tube of Lucas' Pawpaw ointment is always in my bag.

I use lots of lip products interchangeably but this never leaves my bag EVER.

It really sorts my lips out and is another multi-purpose balm to keep in your SOS box.

Crystal collagen eye masks

This is an oldie but a goodie for me.

I don't use them often so always have a supply.

I buy a pack of 5 from eBay or friends going to china annually and they just give me a bit of a boost.

My eye shape means that I have epicanthal folds but not wrinkles.
Luckily I don't get eye bags or have extreme discolouration around my eyes.
When I am tired it's more my actual eyes going red/ blood shot.

So these are just to make my skin feel good and pamper myself with.

So these are a few of my staple savers/saviours for Autumn/Winter.

Shaking up AW15: Kiko haul

Kiko is one of those beauty brands that is soooo affordable and is amazing quality yet I find I don't shop there enough.

I may not shop there as often as I would like but I do have a great collection of solid great performance products.

I absolutely love the Regents Street branch and could honestly
just stay in there for hours gazing at the products.
Although it doesn't have the biggest space it's very cleanly layed out
and just on the right side of overwhelming -if there is such a thing!

Whilst meeting up with friends for dinner,
I dropped in and picked up a few items and I am really loving them.
As I don't often wear bright colours on my eyes,
I actually bought these eyeshadow shades to use them mainly as blusher.
Although less bright in real life,
they are very pigmented. So a very light hand is needed and a very small amount of product does the job.
They might be colours usually associated with spring or summer
but if you have been reading the blog for a while I am sure you know I wear whatever takes my fancy whenever
it takes said fancy!

An affordable Aw15 scent: Zara Vanilla Wood perfume

I have been slowly growing my Zara perfume collection for the last year or 2, see here and here. And I really enjoy them.

They are incredibly affordable and have great longevity for a high street brand.
I find the Zara scents have great pay off on me.

Believe it or not I have actually had Vanilla Wood in my room unopened for just over a year!

I bought this last September on a shopping trip with my friend Niki and just set it aside. This now seems like a lucky break as, it's been in my mind for the last few weeks. Vanilla is one of my favourite scents and I am finally breaking it out for Autumn/ Winter. I love the warmth, depth, spice and sweetness vanilla brings and this doesn't disappoint.

I think Vanilla Wood is a scent you either love or hate.
I have seen very mixed reviews about it however when I smelt it in store I was drawn to it and still am.
Like many Zara woman perfumes (Zara perfume selection) it is sweet, warm and fruity. It isn't overwhelming which I like and is very wearable. It was a very affordable 12.99 for 75ml.

It definitely has the deeper musky scents of cacao, smooth praline mixed in with a lighter sweeter madarin and spicy peachy notes swirled in with vanilla.

I am really loving this as an everyday perfume and it really wakes me up and leaves me in a good mood.

It lasts a good few hours and I have received so many compliments.

Its a thumbs up from me!

*P.s I occasionally get migraines and although they are not scent activated. Certain scents whilst I have a migraine are extremely aggravating. This scent however doesn't cause me any issues.*

Natural skincare: MADARA Clarifying Toner Review*

As you know I have been dabbling with natural skincare brands,
see my finding natural and organic skincare brands haul and have really enjoyed discovering effective new products.
I have had my eye on the Madara Clarify Toner* for a while and couldn't wait test it out.

Madara is a Latvian natural cosmetics brand using the forests and certified organic farms in the Baltic area to create unique formulas.
They are organic, vegan, nut free, gluten free and ECOCERT certified.

The first thing I noticed apart from the lovely packaging was the scent.
It smells like an autumnal cocktail. Somewhere between sweet elderflower and spicy figs.
I really like the fact this toner leaves my face matte as opposed to dry and there is a marked difference
in the two feelings!
My skin feels refreshed, smooth and supple and most importantly moisturised.

As I have combination skin it is great to find, a non abrasive exfoliant toner that balances
the skin and gives me an even surface to apply my serum to.

The Madara Clarifying Toner* is made up of a few natural ingredients such as Northern oak bark, Rose water and sweet flag which have been formulated to clarify, minimise pores and exfoliate the skin.
I was a little apprehensive about it having a naturally derived alcohol on my face but it hasn't been stripping at all and I have not had any stinging which is great.
In fact it is very gentle and soothing.

I have been using the toner for just over 4 weeks and think it a really nice toner for normal/ combination skin.
The main areas it has targeted for me is clarifying and pores.
My blemishes were reduced and my overall skin looks clearer and a little more glowy.
Along with using my Alba Botanica products which I reviewed. I have seen further improvement
to the small area of visible pores.
They are constantly tight and hydrated which helps to minimise their visibility.
They are definitely a great combination.

I experienced really good results on how my skin looked overall.
I still have the occasional blemish but I love the results.
Autumn onwards can be very harsh on the skin and some toners are very stripping,
however the clarifying ingredients in this really help to balance the skin.
I have really enjoyed using this toner and can't wait to see further results.
I would definitely buy this in future, as it is so mild and nourishing.

AW15: Basic style staples

Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year.
The gorgeous hues and tones that are emerging from nature are beautiful to behold and so visually inspiring.

I love the variety of pieces that you can wear and how you can style them.
I am really into textured layering at the moment and this is the perfect season to do it and these pieces will definitely be my back drop/ mood board for the coming months.
