What the junk food you eat says about you, and how you can reset your body

No man in the world has more courage than the man who can stop after eating one peanut. This amusing thought sums up the power of the human craving for mouthwatering food. Unlike hunger, which is our body's way of ensuring it is provided with energy to stay alive, cravings are mainly a psychological need for high-fat or high-sugar foods that taste delicious.

UK's scientists have now traced junk food cravings to prehistoric times when the brain's opioids and dopamine (brain chemicals that let out feel-good sensations) reacted to the benefit of high-calorie food as a survival mechanism. The scientists have explained how we are programmed to relish junk food. But why do we crave certain foods and what do our cravings tell us about the reasons behind them?

Nutritionist and obesity consultant Naini Setalvad explains, "While several factors could cause cravings, the most common stem either from a deficiency of minerals and vitamins or due to a mild imbalance in our neurotransmitters, which are our body's chemical messengers. They carry impulses between nerve cells and some control our moods and feelings. For instance, someone who chronically has low blood pressure would instinctually take to saltier foods; as would one who lacks minerals available in salt."

The science behind cravings, which are driven by intense sensations of desire for certain foods, explains how neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine run the show. A dip in our body's serotonin levels causes cravings for starchy and sweet foods. Setalvad says, "This is why we subconsciously reach out for chocolate, rice, breads, potatoes and even fried foods, when we are upset. Increased availability of such foods also makes us emotionally dependent on them. Therefore, even the tiniest stressor in our lives propels our need for these foods." Serotonin helps maintain a 'happy feeling' and calms anxiety. Whereas, dopamine helps us calm down and elevates our mood. "This is why most stressed people would prefer bananas as their favorite fruit," she adds.

B complex vitamins and minerals such as zinc and magnesium are linked to depression. Therefore, if we lack adequate levels of these, we get easily upset and end up craving for sweets, Setalvad says. Also, stress pushes us further towards high-energy foods such as cakes and sweets. "Sugar has an enormous impact on our moods and cravings. Usually someone feeling down pines for it. When you opt for white sugar, your craving gets momentarily satisfied coupled with a sudden rush of energy. But when this effect wears off, it leaves you irritable, low and restless till you get another sugar fix. This is why I feel sugar, on this count, is nearly as bad as a recreational drug. Caffeine has the same effect."

How you can control your cravings
The first step towards this would be to cut on junk food options. Setalvad suggests making small changes. "Replace sugary biscuits at home with fruits and baked chips. Switch to rock salt or sea salt from regular salt. Discourage frying any food and inculcate a habit of having salads with every meal, to ensure your intake of antioxidants. Go for nuts and seeds, the healthier alternative to fried snacks," she says.

Learn to recognize your cravings. If you feel your consumption of unhealthy carbohydrates (such as white flour or white sugar) is high, switch to a healthier version of that food. "For instance, stick to whole grain breads instead of the refined flour ones. If you seek something sweet, go for a banana or an apple. If you feel chocolate cravings, opt for dark chocolates rather than sugary milk chocolates, and if you crave something salty, have limbu paani with rock salt and cumin," she adds. If you see irresistible but unhealthy food, then take a bite or two to satiate your taste buds. But if you are hungry, then you should eat good portions of healthy food. Obviously, exercising helps channelise your cravings towards healthier foods as it regularises your bodily systems.

LONDON: A Japanese firm called Marudai has unveiled a $650 bulletproof case for your iPhone.

It could offer the perfect protection for those planning to recreate the infamous 'iPhone vs gun' videos popular on YouTube, which see amateur marksmen shooting their phones and other gadgets to see what happens to them.

The bulletproof case features an inch thick slab of steel plating the firm claims can resist a .50 caliber round, the Daily Mail reported.

However, the protection does come at a cost -- apart from the high price tag, only the back of your handset is protected -- and there's a hole for the camera lens drilled into the metal.

The front of the camera is protected by a thin sheet of aluminum, although the firm has thoughtfully made both white and black versions available, the newspaper added.

The iPhone is first placed into a protective case, then the steel and aluminum case is bolted together around it to secure the handset. The firm also throws in a bonus for purchasers - an empty bullet so you can show friends exactly what you are protected against, the Mail said.

LONDON: Search giant Google has sparked a new privacy row by asking users to read and interpret random private house numbers in order to access their own accounts.

Internet users are being asked to read random pictures of real house numbers taken by Google's Street View cameras, as part of new security checks.

The pictures of house numbers, which are taken from doors and fences on its Street View mapping service, appear on Google's websites when users are asked security questions in order to access their accounts.

In order to gain access to the page, web users are forced to identify a blurry house number by typing it into a box, The Telegraph reports.

The same image is presented to other Google users around the world at the same time. If enough people submit the same number, Google accepts they have accurately read the photo and are therefore not bots.

According to the paper, campaign groups accused the firm of being "underhand and crude".

"There is a serious privacy issue with identifying the individual number of people's homes," Nick Pickles, director of privacy and civil liberties at Big Brother Watch said.

Pickles also said that there is no such 'public interest' use in retyping house numbers, rather, Google uses the affirmative identification of a house number to sharpen up the image on its Street View or Google Maps service.

The old tried and true methods of eating less fat, exercising and joining weight loss programs are more effective strategies for shedding those extra kilos than popular diets and non-prescription pills, researchers say.

Nicklas, MD, MPH, MA, a clinical research fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School and colleagues analysed data from more than 4,000 obese individuals culled from the 2001-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the health and nutritional status of adults in the United States

"This is great news because studies have shown that even a 5 percent reduction in weight can lead to improved health," said Nicklas.

"With more than a third of Americans now obese and fifty to seventy percent of them trying to lose weight, this is important because the health risks associated with carrying that extra weight are substantial."

Individuals included in the study were over 20 years of age with a body mass index of 30 or more 12 months prior to the interview.

Of those surveyed, 2,523 individuals reported trying to lose weight. Forty per cent of these said they experienced weight loss of 5 per cent or greater, and another 20 per cent lost 10 per cent or more.

"Those who exercised more and ate less fat were significantly more likely to lose weight," said the authors.

"Additionally we found a correlation between joining weight loss programs and greater reported weight loss, which may speak to the importance of structure in a weight loss regimen," said Nicklas.

And while those who used prescription weight loss medications also reported weight loss success, this represented only a small number of study participants.

In contrast, the authors found that, "self-reported use of popular diets, liquid diets, nonprescription weight loss pills and diet foods/products were not associated with weight loss."

"It''s very encouraging to find that the most of the weight loss methods associated with success are accessible and inexpensive," said senior author Christina Wee, MD, MPH who conducts research on obesity and health disparities as the Co-Director of Research in BIDMC''s Division of General Medicine and Primary Care.

"There are lots of fad diets out there as well as expensive over-the-counter medications that have not necessarily been proven to be effective, and it is important that Americans discuss product claims with their doctor before trying such products," Wee added.

This study did not look at the long-term impact of these interventions on an individual''s ability to keep the weight off. The authors suggest that future research is needed to identify and address barriers to maintaining weight loss.

Nokia offers real-time traffic updates to phone users

NEW DELHI: Nokia added real-time traffic updates to its Drive app, which is available on the company's Windows and Symbian smartphones.

According to Nokia, people who use Drive app to find their way in Delhi and Mumbai will be now able to see the condition of traffic on their route in advance. The traffic jams will be shown on streets in red colour and the green routes will indicate a smooth drive.

he service is powered by Navteq Traffic Pro. According to Nokia, it utilizes the probes and signals from Drive users to find out the condition of traffic on a particular road. For example, if traffic on Road A is moving slowly, the data from Nokia users stuck in the traffic will indicate very low speed. Nokia then uses this data to warn other Drive users headed towards Road A.

Android devices and iPhones also offer maps and direction services to their users, though in India they are not as comprehensive as what Nokia has on its phones. Google's Navigation, which is similar to Nokia Drive, is not officially supported in India. It also lacks features like turn-by-turn voice navigation and real-time traffic updates.

But iPhone or Android users can try Waze, a free app that also uses data from users on the road to identify and pinpoint traffic jams.

Nokia said that worldwide its maps are used 100 million times daily. In India, Nokia Drive covers 750 cities. The company said real-time traffic updates would be rolled out to other major cities in the future.

‘MUMBAI: Google and Microsoft, two of the world's largest technology firms, are raining blows on each other as they hard sell their so-called cloud services and vie for dominance in a market estimated to grow to $15-18 billion by 2020.

Although these companies used to be thought of as being fundamentally different, similarities are beginning to show more prominently with both offering office productivity software, besides computer operating systems. While it may be too early to gauge business gains, the war of words has begun.

"Google is the largest cloud services company in India," claimed Rajan Anandan, Google's India head since January 2011. "We have 2,00,000 businesses that use Google cloud solutions. We have orders of magnitude bigger than Microsoft," added Anandan, who used to head Microsoft in India before he took up the Google job.

Cloud computing is causing a fundamental shift in the way technology services are delivered. Unlike in the traditional model, software or hardware need not be on-premise but can bought as a service and can be paid for depending on usage, instead of a lumpsum upfront payment earlier.

While Google proudly cites cloud sales successes, including to the Indian Youth Congress, IndiaMart, Indiainfoline, Flipkart and Sterlite Technologies, Microsoft boasts of logos such as Essar, Sporting Mindz, Idhasoft, and Gradatim.

"We're competing with lots of folks in the cloud space," said Sanket Akerkar, MD, Microsoft India, who said the Seattle-based firm's approach to enterprise solutions was different from that of Google.

"They (Google) are largely an advertising company, which is consumer oriented. They have taken their consumer assets and are trying to figure out how they can get into the enterprise business," said Akerkar.

"It sort of doesn't work. We have taken our enterprise class and put those on cloud; we think that's a better approach." Google recently upped the ante by wooing chief information officers of some of the largest companies in India.

At an exclusive event in Rajasthan, company executives briefed nearly 50 chief information offices, including Amrita Gangotra of Bharti Airtel and Anil Jaggia of HDFC bank, on Google's cloud offerings for enterprises.

Much like most emerging technologies, Indian enterprises are gingerly experimenting with cloud computing, but analysts expect accelerated pace of adoption in the coming years as the new model offers lower costs and solves the challenge of software and hardware obsolescence.

SBI uses Google's cloud-based search services to scour through its massive repository of account and customer data. That may be, but Microsoft does not think Google has what it takes to win the enterprise clients. Analysts are not ready to call the game just yet but agree that the competition is definitely getting fierce.

"Microsoft has a strong enterprise software base for its traditional software which can be leveraged for its cloud products," said Sid Deshpande, senior research analyst at Gartner. "Google is playing catch up now but I wouldn't put one over the other."

While Google used to be predominantly known for its search, advertising and its popular e-mail Gmail, Microsoft specialised in operating systems and office productivity applications. But things have changed now.

Washington: A see-through cellphone that can be draped around a wrist may soon be possible as scientists have developed transparent, flexible memories using silicon oxide as the active component.

Rice University chemist James Tour revealed that the new type of memory could combine with the likes of transparent electrodes developed at Rice for flexible touchscreens and transparent integrated circuits and batteries developed at other labs in recent years.

“Generally, you can't see a bit of memory, because it's too small,” said Tour, Rice's T.T. and W.F. Chao Chair in Chemistry as well as a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science and of computer science.

“But silicon itself is not transparent. If the density of the circuits is high enough, you're going to see it.”

Rice’s transparent memory is based upon the 2010 discovery that pushing a strong charge through standard silicon oxide, an insulator widely used in electronics, forms channels of pure silicon crystals less than 5 nanometers wide.

The initial voltage appears to strip oxygen atoms from the silicon oxide; lesser charges then repeatedly break and reconnect the circuit and turn it into nonvolatile memory.

The Chennai Super Kings will be aiming for a spectacular hat-trick of titles in IPL-5. It's a predatory outfit that picks and chooses it moment to attack. It's also a clever side that responds to situations and creates difficult scenarios for the opposition.

Not surprisingly, CSK is the most successful IPL team; it has triumphed in the IPL twice, reached the final and the semifinal of the competition once each and also won the Champions League.

And it has a strong captain in M.S. Dhoni. His calm exterior, the ability to absorb pressure and tactical nous have ensured CSK's stay at the top. The captain remains one of the most potent finishers in the shorter formats of the game; he keeps his mind blank but gets the opposition bowlers to blink first at the death.

This said, the burden of expectations will be on CSK this time around. In how Dhoni's men cope with this stress, lies their biggest challenge.

Coach Stephen Fleming will surely chip in with his inputs. He will seek to drive home a sporting truth – winning is a habit and teams that do not fear defeat win more.

In the IPL territory, moves off the field – in the auction – can be as crucial as ones on it.

Having the reputation of a franchise that uses its money wisely, CSK's signing of left-arm spinning all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for two million dollars surprised many.

While the jury is still out on the expensive buy, the CSK has its reasons for roping in Jadeja. On surfaces where the ball grips, Jadeja's brand of left-arm spin could be valuable for the side.

He could combine effectively with the versatile R. Ashwin in the middle overs to build pressure on the batting side. Although Shadab Jakati has turned in some useful displays for CSK overs the years, there was a feeling that he was becoming rather predictable.

Jadeja's ability with the bat and his fielding ability could also be assets to the team.

The CSK is a formidable force at Chepauk and the spinner-friendly conditions are once again likely to favour the host. Ashwin, with his ability to contain and strike at different stages of the innings, will be a key player. Sri Lankan off-spinner Suraj Randiv, who sent down some influential spells last season, will be around too.

Yet, batting remains the team's stronger flank. Murali Vijay, back after tending to a wrist injury in Australia, can be explosive in T20 cricket, both with conventional strokes and the ability to bludgeon the ball over the on-side field. Suresh Raina has a range of inventive strokes of power and finesse. S. Badrinath offers the side both solidity and enterprise.

Michael Hussey will miss the first seven matches due to his commitments for Australia but this will provide CSK with an opportunity to field a new opening partner for Vijay. Abhinav Mukund and Anirudha Srikkanth will be in the fray.

Albie Morkel's big hitting can dent the opposition morale while his pace bowling – he has a handy yorker – can still make an impact. Left-armer Doug Bollinger's incision and accuracy can pose searching questions to the batsmen. When Ben Hilfenhuas joins the side following the Australian tour of the West Indies, his right-arm swing could complement Bollinger's methods. CSK also expects much from the home pacemen such as the tall and rejuvenated Sudip Tyagi.
The spirit in the camp reflects the bonding in CSK. Belief is a key attribute.
