What some deem to be the world’s thinnest notebook (some Apple haters still claim that this is a netbook, although I am inclined to disagree with that assessment even though I am not an Apple fanboy) has just gotten better – and just in case you were wondering how that is possible, why don’t you keep on reading? I’m sure you might even end up looking forward to get hold of the new MacBook Air eventually.

Not only does the updated MacBook Air come with next generation processors, it will also be able to handle high-speed data transmissions thanks to the inclusion of the new Thunderbolt I/O technology, in addition to a backlit keyboard to let you work late into the night without any light in the background, and Mac OS X Lion doing the brunt of the work to keep everything together – software-wise, of course.

Since it runs on “the world�s most advanced operating system”, you can be sure that the MacBook Air is no pushover unlike the first generation model. Latest Apple ad shows Santa using Siri, not Rudolph

Apple's marketing team has unveiled another work of genius, with its latest Siri-focused iPhone 4S TV ad showing that Rudolph might want to start worrying about his role in Santa's delivery system.
Apple's ads focus less on specs, which Android tablet ads in particular seem to feel are the most important thing, and more on what their devices can do. No matter what folks say about the genius of the late Steve Jobs, the Apple marketing team deserves some kudos as well.

In this ad, which might be the last new iPhone 4S ad we see in 2011, Santa needs some directional help with finding kids' houses. The good thing we can take from this part of the ad is that Charlie Grant was a good kid this year, as Santa is on his way.

Meanwhile, Mr. Claus also uses Siri to find weather reports, and uses Apple's voice recognition software to find the email that has the latest "naughty or nice list."

However, Ms. Claus sends him a message, reminding him to "go easy on the cookies."

Finally, Santa checks his schedule. For those who have always wondered how Santa makes it around the world in one evening, here's another glimpse at the miracle: he's still got 3.7 billion more appointments (with nice kids) by the end of the ad.

Skype Application contributes to 3G Video Calling in iPhones

Skype is hoping its latest innovation will help customers forget about the worst outage Relevant Products/Services in company history. The VoIP provider just rolled out a new version of its iPhone app -- and it brings video calling to millions of mobile Relevant Products/Services users around the world on both 3G and Wi-Fi networks.

With the new Skype for iPhone app, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can actually see families, friends and colleagues while talking to them. Skype expects video calling to make its app -- which is already one of the top five free iPhone apps Relevant Products/Services of 2010 -- even more popular.

"With video calling representing approximately 40 percent of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months of 2010, our users have been eager to get Skype video calling on their mobile phones," said Neil Stevens, general manager of Skype's consumer business Relevant Products/Services.

One-Upping FaceTime

Skype said its app sets the stage for a video call to evolve communication from a mere transactional experience to a shared experience. Skype offered practical examples, including a military father watching the birth of his child while deployed abroad, loved ones communicating via sign language, or work colleagues collaborating around the globe.

"This is definitely something that Skype customers have been looking for. It does do FaceTime one better by working over the 3G network. Of course, it works with other Skype users that may not have an iPhone," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner.

"This is a natural evolution, and it does put pressure on some of the other video-chat Relevant Products/Services providers that have been trying to gain traction in the marketplace," he added. "People are familiar with Skype. They probably have their Skype networks already in place. As we get into 2011, video conferencing and front-facing cameras are going to be standard on phones of a certain caliber."

Skype Blames Windows

In a final update on last week's 24-hour Skype outage, Skype CIO Relevant Products/Services Lars Rabbe offered an explanation of what transpired, the root cause, and plans to mitigate the problem in the future. Essentially, Skype is blaming Microsoft.

On Dec. 22, a cluster of support servers responsible for offline instant messaging Relevant Products/Services became overloaded. Some Skype clients received delayed responses. In a version of Skype for Windows client, the delayed responses from overloaded servers were not properly processed, causing Windows clients running the affected version to crash. That issue caused about 40 percent of those clients to fail, along with about 25 percent to 30 percent of publicly available supernodes.

"The failure of 25 to 30 percent of supernodes in the P2P network resulted in an increased load on the remaining supernodes. While we expect this kind of increase in the instance of a failure, a significant proportion of users were also restarting crashed Windows clients at this time," Rabbe said. "This massively increased the load as they reconnected to the peer-to-peer cloud Relevant Products/Services. The initial crashes happened just before our usual daily peak hour ... and very shortly after the initial crash, which resulted in traffic to the supernodes that was about 100 times what would normally be expected at that time of day."

Royale Opera Time - Piece Watch

Beat me with a stick! I just had to plod through Manufacture Royale's nine page long bloody press release - only to have reasserted what they mention in the first few lines; that they are "unashamedly elitist." Wipe my brow and hand me an ol' timey hallucinogenic absinthe, because I need to lay back in a hammock on a steamship and read some Jules Verne to appreciate this steampunk mechanaut. Oh how right it would be for the good people behind the conception of this watch to redo their text and branding on the watch. It is a cool thing, and the overgrown child in my loves this oddity - but they really need to take it down a few notches. I kid you not, in a nutshell the brand would have you believe that this watch not only sets the bar upon which all future watches must be judged, but also claims that according to the designer this watch release is one step closer to realizing a dream of utopia. Please calmly take an axe to my forehead - for I cannot believe this.

Ok, let's get back to the subject at hand. Manufacture Royale takes inspiration from Voltaire. Yes, that Voltaire - a man that at one point they refer to as the "Super Salesman." They should have just called the watch "Voltaire." That would have been better than making it look like a wrist catapult and for some reason calling it the Opera (well it does have a minute repeater complication).

It also appears that Manufacture Royale (with cheese), has been influenced by the designs of fellow watch brand Louis Moinet. Both seem to be focused on the "age of enlightenment" (and limitless coffers). Another nod to fantasy is the Manufacture Royale logo. Above the "MR" letter is a curved line with the handle of a sword coming out of it. This is the sword in the stone - Excalibur from Arthurian legend. Make of this what you will. I just smile and think of the Disney cartoon. Does Merlin come with the watch? Perhaps a little Archimedes? Owls seem to be really "in" right now.

The Opera Time-Piece (how MR officially calls it) contains a brand new movement that is manually wound, has a tourbillon and a minute repeater. It was designed by the good people at Fabrique du Temps. Built of 319 parts, the movement is quite nice looking. I do enjoy the silicon escapement, and the combo of brass in various tones and finishes. Makes for a very rich look. While nicely conceived, it is not quite as unique as the watch case, but is still quite attractive. Power reserve is said to be in excess of 100 hours. Plus, the minute repeater plays the hours in A, and the minute in C sharp.

Now comes the interesting part. See how the case opens up like the bellows of an accordion? This unique design feature is made to create a resonance cage/chamber to allow for the minute repeater to sound more lively. The unfortunate reality is that the complexity of many minute repeaters is diminished by the tinny sound they make after being cased in a watch. The modern needs of a watch with water resistance (as well as the desire for precious metals that absorb sound) has made it a challenge for watch designers to come up with cases that adequately allow for minute repeater complications to sound decent. For Manufacture Royale had to convince engineers to develop this ultra complex style of articulating case. We can call it the "Beetle shell watch case."

The watch case itself is 50mm wide done in 18k rose and gray gold. It has three sapphire crystals and 60 pieces in its construction. Everything about this watch is crazy. It is weird and wonderful. Ugly and beautiful. A novelty for true collectors, only 12 of these watches will be made - making way for other future Manufacture Royal watches. I really do appreciate the audacity of the men behind this watch and brand. There is a hefty amount of silliness here. They make little attempt to hide the fact that this is one eternally ostentatious toy. The watch comes in a veneered wooden box that is said to be a reproduction of the Bastille Opera House in Paris. In case you didn't detect it yet, the French are behind this timepiece. The price you ask? Well in Manufacture Royale's own words "just like the product - exceptional." And they aren't lying.... $1,200,000. My consumer gland just had an aneurysm.

When Apple released the iPad in April, it set a high bar for tablet computers. The first real competitor has arrived in Samsung's Galaxy Tab.

With a touch screen that measures 7 inches diagonally, nearly three shorter than the iPad, the Tab is good but not good enough.

The Tab is nearly the same size as Amazon's Kindle e-reader but slightly thicker. It's a bit more portable than the iPad, but has a smaller screen to play with.

For me, at least, this in-between size bigger and heavier than a smart phone, smaller and lighter than an iPad made for an in-between experience. It was more engaging than playing around with a phone but less immersive than what I've felt with the iPad.

The Tab, currently available from T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon Wireless and coming soon from AT&T, costs $400 to $650, depending on whom you buy it from and whether or not you agree to a two-year contract. It runs Google's Android operating system, which is mostly used for smart phones.

The Tab I tested, which worked over Sprint's cellular network and Wi-Fi, had a bright and brilliant screen. That makes it well-suited to surfing the Web, watching videos and reading e-books with Amazon's Kindle app.

But when I bought and downloaded an episode of "Law & Order: SVU" from Samsung Electronics Co.'s online store for TV shows and movies, I found I couldn't quite lose myself in it as I could when watching videos on the iPad. The Tab's screen simply felt more appropriate for media snacking than gorging.

The Tab runs the most recent iteration of Android, version 2.2, which means it can play Flash videos a trick the iPad and Apple Inc.'s iPhone haven't learned. This came in handy when surfing the Web, as it let me watch videos I usually can't access unless I'm on a computer.

The device has a speedy processor and sensitive touch screen, and it is suited for the typical Android layout of having several hidden home screens that you swipe to see. These home screens can fill up with applications and widgets that let you do such things as check the news or weather.

A number of apps I downloaded from the Android Marketplace looked fine on the Tab's screen, but they don't all magnify to fill up the available space. While the Yelp app and the disturbingly addictive game "Angry Birds" worked well with the larger real estate, others such as Retro Camera were more centered on the screen, surrounded by black emptiness.

Speaking of cameras, that's another feature that the Tab has but the iPad doesn't. There are two on the Tab: a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front and a 3-megapixel camera on the back, both of which can be used for taking photos or video chatting.

I was glad to see the front-facing camera, as one of the iPad's few shortcomings is its lack of a video chat option. The Tab comes with Qik, an app that lets you conduct video chats with others who have Qik or who watch a live video stream on Qik's website. But video chats didn't work so well in my tests. I tried using Qik over Wi-Fi and Sprint's network, but in both cases my friend on the other end looked extremely pixelated.

I thought that having a camera on the back of the Tab would be useful, but it ended up being a throwaway feature partly because I felt so awkward and silly holding up the clunky Tab to take photos as I wandered around. Thanks, but I'll stick with my smart phone and point-and-shoot camera for now.

The Tab will hold up well to plenty of video chatting or other battery-intensive activities. With Wi-Fi on, I got a little more than six hours of use, including quite a bit of time streaming videos from YouTube. It isn't as good as the 10 hours maximum promised for the iPad with Wi-Fi on, but it's still plenty of play time.

Despite its shortcomings, if you do decide to get a Tab, be prepared to wade through a morass of differing prices and data plans, which vary by carrier. You can get the Tab for as low as $400, but you'll have to sign a two-year wireless service contract (and in some cases you'll have to pay even more to send and receive text messages on it). And if you hate the idea of another monthly commitment or want a no-contract plan, expect to pay much more for the device. Verizon charges $600 for the Tab, and AT&T will charge $650 when it begins selling it on Sunday; neither will require a contract.

Now consider that the cheapest iPad, which has just Wi-Fi for connecting to the Internet, costs $499, and the decision isn't so tough.

My time with the Tab was fun, but it just never got me thinking, "I want this." And if somebody was kind enough to give me one, I'd probably exchange it for an iPad.

PSP fans rejoice as we may see the PSP phone reveled to us as early as February 2011 at the MWC (Mobile World Congress). Without commenting on rumors Sony Ericson CEO Bert Nordberg told the Wall Street Journal "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere." When asked why Sony is so late in the venture for a smartphone gaming device, the CEO answered, "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter."

As of now speculations and expectations for the device are high but all we can do is wait and watch as to what Sony has to offer at MWC 2011.

It shows how to modify registry entries to configure the Microsoft Windows Time Service. The Windows Time service allows a Windows network to provide synchronisation of all machines within a domain.

Windows 2003 Server Configuration
Windows 2003 has expanded on the original Windows 2000 time service by providing a true NTP implementation. The time service, installed by default, can synchronise to a NTP Server. Indeed, by manipulating registry settings for the service it can act as both an NTP server and client to synchronise other network clients in the domain.
The 'Windows Time' service should be present in the systems service list. The application executable is 'w32time.exe'. The parameter list for w32time can be found in the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time

Before modifying registry entries it is good a dood idea to backup the registry settings. The registry can then be restored in the event of problems being encountered.

To configure a Windows 2003 machine to synchronise to an external NTP server, edit the following registry entries:

The ‘Special Poll Interval’ registry entry defines the period in seconds that the Windows 2003 machine should poll the NTP server. A recommended value is 900 seconds, which equates to every 15 minutes.

The ‘NTP Server’ parameter is used to provide a list of IP addresses or DNS names, separated by a space, of NTP servers that the Windows 2003 machine can synchronise to.

The period can be reduced by setting the 'Period' parameter to how many times a day synchronisation is required. Setting the period to 48 will activate synchronisation with the NTP server once every half hour.

Windows 2000 can also be configured to act as an NTP server by setting the 'Local NTP' parameter to '1'.
After editing any of the registry entries for the windows time service, the service must be restarted for the settings to take effect. The services can be started or stopped from the service control applet in 'administrative tools'. Alternatively the service can be controlled via the DOS net command thus:

net start w32time
net stop w32time

NTP Troubleshooting
A number of problems can be encountered when configuring the Windows Time Service. NTP operates using the UDP protocol over TCP/IP. Therefore the TCP/IP network infrastructure must be operational for NTP to be effective. Synchronisation issues may arise when NTP attempts to synchronise to an inaccurate time reference or if network delays are excessive.

Synchronising Time on Network Devices
As well as synchronising Microsoft Windows servers and workstations, NTP can also be used to synchronise network devices, such as hubs, switches and routers. Any network device that can synchronise to a NTP server can be pointed to the Windows server to achieve time synchronisation. In this way the whole network and accompanying infrastructure can be synchronised.
