We've come to LOVE using especially two oils right before bedtime. Both of my kids love having me rub a couple drops of Lavender oil on their chest at night. My husband especially loves to diffuse it in our bedroom and it sends him off to dreamland in no time. When we're going through times where the restlessness seems to be more bothersome, we turn to a synergistic blend called Dreamtime. It's a lovely mix of Sandalwood, Patchouli, Jasmine and other oils. We love the smell and it has a very calming effect on their night terrors. We also don't catch them up sleep walking when they use the oils before bed. Dreamtime can be rubbed on their chest or diffused as well. Lavender and the oils in Dreamtime are all very therapeutic when diffused. The oils are quickly absorbed through the lungs for a relaxing effect on the entire body and mind. They can also be applied to the bottoms of the feet where the skin is the most absorbent or rubbed on the chest so that the vapors are inhaled from there.

Making this homemade spray cleaner is almost quicker than writing "spray cleaner" on your shopping list! You simply take an empty spray bottle and fill it with water and a squirt of liquid castille soap (such as Dr. Bronner's). Then add 30 or so drops of your favorite therapeutic grade essential oil. You could use Pine Needle if you like that great pine-sol smell. Other great options are Citrivescents, Tea Tree, Orange, Lemon, or Lavender. All great choices!

Shake the bottle before each use as the oils will separate some. Spray on sinks, countertops, or any surface you want to clean and disinfect. Just give it a few seconds to work and wipe clean!

Just go to www.oilandessence.com to choose your favorite oil now!

Scents of the Season

Scent is one of the quickest ways to reach the brain and to affect on mood. Frankincense was traditionally used both medicinally and as a religious incense. One of the most powerful properties of frankincense is the ability to calm, relax and slow down breathing, hence its use as a meditation tool. In addition, use frankincense essential oil as an antiseptic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory agent and as an agent in skin care.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Sandalwood (Santalum album) is also mentioned in the Bible and was used as far back as Egyptian times to embalm bodies. Sandalwood is used as a religious incense as well and is used in meditation to promote a feeling of peace. Sandalwood essential oil is sedative, anti-depressant, decongestant, antiseptic, anti-infectious and an aphrodisiac. You could also use our Blends of Sandalwood to incorporate the different varieties of Sandalwood from around the world.

Orange Essential Oil

Oranges are associated with the holidays because of the tradition of giving oranges as gifts. Orange (Citrus sinensis), like many of the citrus essential oils, is a light and uplifting scent. Orange essential oil helps to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia and to relieve cold and flu symptoms.

Pine Needle Essential Oil

Pine Needle oil (Pinus sylvestris) conjures up images of evergreens. Pine needle essential oil has many healing properties when used in aromatherapy. Pine needle essential oil is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, decongestant and anti-infectious. It can help to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis, asthma, fatigue, allergies and inflammation. You could also choose European Black Pine oil for a stronger pine scent.

Cinnamon Essential Oil

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) is also an ancient oil that is both mentioned in the Bible and was used by the ancient Chinese in 2,700 B.C. for medicinal purposes. Cinnamon has a warm, spicy aroma. If diffusing, use cinnamon bark oil with caution as it is a sensitizing agent, however blends containing cinnamon bark oil can generally be diffused without experiencing irritation. Cinnamon oil is antiseptic, anti-infectious, anti-bacterial and carminative. You could also use our Cassia for a less costly alternative or our Cinnamon Blend, a more mild Cinnamon oil.
They work as a liver and gland stimulant and contain caryophyllene and valencene. Research from the universities of Berlin and Vienna show increased oxygenation around the pineal and pituitary glands. Further research has shown that sesquiterpenes have the ability to surpass the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain tissue. other sesquiterpenes, like chamazulene and farnesol, are very high in anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activity. Chamazulene may be found in chamomile, tansy, and yarrow.
Farnesene is anti-viral in action.
Limonene has strong anti-viral properties and has been found in 90% of the citrus oils.
Pinene has strong antiseptic properties and may be found in high proportions in the conifer oils such as pine, fir, spruce, and juniper.
Other terpenes include camphene, cadinene, cedrene, dipentene, phellandrene, terpinene, sabinene, and myrcene.

Esters - are the compounds resulting from the reaction of an alcohol with an acid (known as esterification). Esters are very common and are found in a large number of essential oils. They are anti-fungal, calming and relaxing.

Linalyl acetate may be found in bergamot, Clary sage, and lavender
Geraniol acetate may be found in sweet marjoram.
Other esters include bornyl acetate, eugenol acetate, and lavendulyl acetate.

Aldehydes - are highly reactive and characterized by the group C-H-O (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen). In general, they are anti-infectious with a sedative effect on the central nervous system. They can be quite irritating when applied topically (citral being one example), but may have a profound calming effect when inhaled.

Citral is very common with a distinctive antiseptic action. It also has an anti-viral application as with melissa oil when applied topically on herpes simplex.
Citronellal is also very common and has the same lemony scent as citral. Along with citral and neral, citronellas may be found in the oils of melissa, lemongrass, lemon, mandarin, lemon-scented eucalyptus, and citronella.
Elements of aldehydes have also been found in lavender and myrrh. Other aldehydes include benzaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, cuminic aldehyde, and perillaldehyde.

Ketones - are sometimes mucolytic and neuro-toxic when isolated from other constituents. However, all recorded toxic effects come from laboratory testing on guinea pigs and rats. No documented cases exist where oils with a high concentration of ketones (such as mugwort, tansy, sage, and wormwood) have ever caused a toxic effect on a human being. Also, large amounts of these oils would have to be consumed for them to result in a toxic neurological effect. Ketones stimulate cell regeneration, promote the formation of tissue, and liquefy mucous. They are helpful with such conditions as dry asthma, colds, flu and dry cough and are largely found in oils used for the upper respiratory system, such as hyssop, Clary sage, and sage.

Thujone is one of the most toxic members of the ketone family. It can be an irritant and upsetting to the central nervous system and mey be neuro-toxic when taken internally as in the banned drink Absinthe. Although it may be inhaled to relieve respiratory distress and my stimulate the immune system, it should only be administered by an educated and professional aromatherapist.
Jasmone (found in jasmine) and fenchone (found in fennel) are both non-toxic.
Other ketones include camphor, carvone, menthone, methyl nonyl ketone, and pinacamphone.

Alcohols - are commonly recognized for their antiseptic and anti-viral activities. They create an uplifting quality and are regarded as non-toxic.

Terpene Alcohols stimulate the immune system, work as a diuretic and a general tonic, and are anti-bacterial as well.

Linalol can help relieve discomfort. It may be found in rosewood and lavender.
Citronellol may be found in rose, lemon, eucalyptus, geranium, and others.
Geraniol may be found in geranium as well as palmarosa.
Farnesol may be found in chamommile. It is also good for the mucous.
Other terpene alcohols include borneol, menthol, nerol, terpineol, (which Dr. Gattefosse considered to be a decongestant), vetiverol, benzyl alcohol, and cedrol.

Sesquiterpene Alcohols are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-mycotic, and ulcer-protective (preventative).

Bisabolol is one of the the strongest sesquiterpene alcohols. It may be found in chamomile oils where it also functions well as a fixative.

Phenols - are responsible for the fregrance of an oil. They are antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and strongly stimulating but can also be quite caustic to the skin. They contain high levels of oxygenating molecules and have anioxidant properties.

Eugenol may be found in clove and cinnamon oil.
Thymol is found in thyme and may not be as caustic as other phenols.
Carvacrol may be found in oregano and savory. Researchers believe it may possibly contain some anti-cancerous properties.
Others in the phenol family include methyl eugenol, methyl chavicol anethole, safrole, myristicin, and apiol.

Oxides - According to The American Heritage™ Dictionary of the English Language, an oxide is "a binary compound of an element or a radical with oxygen".

Cineol (or eucalyptol) is by far the most important member of the family and virtually exists in a class of its own. It is anesthetic, antiseptic, and works as an expectorant. Cineol is well known as the principal constituent of eucalyptus oil. It may also be found in rosemary, cinnamon, melissa, basil, and ravensara.
Other oxides include linalol oxide, ascaridol, bisabolol oxide, and bisabolone oxide.

All therapeutic grade essential oils have some anti-bacterial properties. They increase the production of white blood cells which helps fight infectious illnesses. It is through these properties that aromatic herbs have been esteemed so highly throughout the ages and so widely used during the onsets of malaria, typhoid, and the epidemic plagues during the 16th century. Research has found that people who consistently use pure essential oils have a higher level of resistance to illnesses, colds, flues, and diseases than the average person. Further indications show that such individuals, after contracting a cold, flu, or other illness, will recover 60-70 percent faster than those who do not use essential oils.

This information is taken from the Reference Guide for Essential Oils by Connie and Alan Higley.

You Can't Keep A Good Man Down

I just wanted to pass along this article that was posted on the Mercola website. These are some of the simplest homemade essential oils recipes to make! These bath salts will sooth sore muscles, to help relieve the pain and itching of poison ivy or chicken pox, to nourish dry skin, to relieve cramping and restore magnesium to your system, for relaxation, or for a lovely gift giving idea.

You can find creative glass jars and wooden spoons or other fun containers at hobby supply stores to display your lovely salts. A less expensive option would be to store them in a ziplock bag inside an organza draw string bag. I recommend using only therapeutic grade essential oils for these recipes since only then will you receive healing and therapeutic benefits from them. Also, they will be absorbed through your skin in the bath and synthetic oils are not healthy to use in such a way.

For the bath salts, you can use Epsom Salts, Dead Sea Salts, Himalayan Pink Crystal Bath Salts, or Grey Sea Salts. Check out the Saltworks website if you can’t find your favorite in your area. Be creative! Experiment with different oils, salts and even herbs! If you come up with a new recipe you love, please leave a comment and share it with us!
Mothers of special needs children especially like this bath. Also try the Gentle Baby Bath Dream below.]

Baby Soft Bath Dream
1 C. First degree burns damage the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and cause pain, redness and swelling (erythema). Second degree burns damage the epidermis and the inner layer, the dermis, causing erythema and blistering. Damage from third degree burns extend into the hypodermis, causing destruction of the full thickness of skin with its nerve supply (numbness). Third degree burns leave scars and may cause loss of function and/or sensation.

Lavender essential oil is an excellent remedy for sunburns and first and second degree burns. For a third degree burn, medical attention needs to be sought immediately. Sunburn is typically a first degree burn and lavender can offer excellent pain-relieving and healing benefits. Another great remedy is aloe vera gel. Aloe very is anti-inflammatory and have tissue-regenerating properties. Helichrysum, lavender, and balsam fir oils support tissue regeneration and reduce scarring and skin discoloration.

Severe burns can also result in dehydration and mineral loss. Inflammation often accompanies burns, so dietary protocols should also be used to lessen inflammation. When burns are serious enough to cause shock, inhaling therapeutic grade essential oils may help reduce the shock.

After a burn has started to heal and is drying and cracking, use a body lotion with a few drops of lavender oil to keep skin soft and to promote faster healing.

Be prepared for summer and keep Lavender Essential Oil on hand. Please e-mail us at oilandessence@aol.com if you have questions or would like to place an order today!

Sore Throat Season

Suffering from a sore throat? Try this! It will help to kill the virus that’s plaguing you as well as soothing your sore throat. You can find the tinctures at a local health food store.

Analgesic Throat Spray

In a 1oz spraybottle combine:
1/4 oz Echinacea tincture or glycerite
1/4 oz Slippery Elm
1/4 oz Licorice
1/4 oz Clove
2-3 drops pure Cardamom essential oil (awesome anesthetic!)

Optional additions :
1-2 drops Sandalwood essential oil
1-2 drops Peppermint essential oil
1-2 drops Ravinstara or Tea Tree oil
Keep the Total combined amount of EO's under 5 drops. Since this wonderful "berry" (which isn't actually a berry at all, but rather is the "cone" of the Juniper shrub) is currently in season and very abundant in the Rocky mountains, I was able to pick some while on a walk the other day. After researching it, I decided to try a little kidney cleanse. It can cause stomach upset if you eat too many at once, so I ate 1 berry the first day, 2 the second day, 3 the third day, 4 the forth day, 5 the 5th day and then back down to 4, 3, 2, and one the last day. It is extremely powerful and must be used with caution, but it is very effective.

Juniper berries are also a popular addition to Sauerkraut, so in the most recent batch we made, we tossed a handful in. I love the nutrients that they add, especially during cold and flu season.

Medical uses and benefits of Juniper Berry
•Juniper Berry is considered one of the great kidney herbs amd jas veru strong action upon the kidneys.
•It is anti-inflammatory and has some antispasmodic properties.
•It has antiseptic properties, which are useful in killing fungi, bacteria and yeasts.
•Great for UTIs (urinary tract infections) and parasitic overgrowths in the GI tract.
•It is also a natural diuretic, and relieves excess water.
•Said to aid in restoring the pancreas, and beneficial in cases of diabetes, as it has natural insulin properties.
•The lye made of the ashes will cure the itch, scabs, and leprosy.

Cautions
•Protracted use of Juniper Berry can irritate and damage the kidneys.
•Since juniper berries can stimulate uterine contractions, avoid use during pregnancy.
•If you have been using juniper berry teas for several weeks and you urine smells like violets, you have been using the herb too long. Continued overdose can cause renal irritation and blood in the urine.
•Use caution in cases of extreme kidney damage.1

Juniper Berry essential oil is one that I will now be keeping a stock of in my personal remedy chest. It aids the body in detoxifying and cleaning, dermatitis, psoriasis (any kind of skin inflammation), skin ulcers, oily complexions, skin toner, acne, eczema, antiseptic, hair loss, hemorrhoids, obesity, liver, kidney, urinary infections, and bladder problems. It has been burned in many parts of the world to fight the spread of plagues, epidemics, and contagious disease. Benefits ulcers, respiratory problems, arthritis, bruises, infections, coughs, diuretic, and cellulite, obesity, regulating menstrual cycle, cramps and rheumatism. Being a local stimulant makes it a good oil to use in a massage. Used for anxiety, stress, nervous tension, clearing mental clutter and confusion, revives exhausted emotions, neutralizing negative emotions and imparting a feeling of emotional cleanliness and purity.
Aromatic Influences: Health, love, and peace. Clears negative energy.
Found In: Fortify, Heart’s Desire and Tummy Rub.
15ml ~ $25.00, 5 ml ~ $13.00

Here is some more great info on this powerful natural remedy:

Juniper (Juniperus communis) is an evergreen shrub found on mountains and heaths throughout Europe, Southwest Asia, and North America. The tree grows to a height of 6-25 ft (2-8 m) and has stiff, pointed needles that grow to 0.4 in (1 cm) long. The female bears cones that produce small round bluish-black berries, which take three years to fully mature.

Juniper belongs to the pine family (Cupressaceae). It has diuretic, antiseptic, stomachic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antirheumatic properties. The tree's therapeutic properties stem from a volatile oil found in the berries. This oil contains terpenes, flavonoid glycosides, tannins, sugar, tar, and resin. Terpinen-4-ol (a diuretic compound of the oil) stimulates the kidneys, increasing their filtration rate. The flavonoid amentoflavone exhibits antiviral properties. Test tube studies show that another constituent of juniper, desoxypodophyllotoxins, may act to inhibit the herpes simplex virus. The resins and tars contained in the oil benefit such skin conditions as psoriasis.

For more than 300 years, juniper berries have been a popular flavoring agent for gin. The word gin comes from the Dutch word for juniper, "geniver." In addition to being an ingredient in alcohol, juniper also has medicinal properties. Ancient Egyptian doctors used the oil as a laxative as far back as 1550 B.C. The Zuni Native American people used the berries to assist them in childbirth. Other Native Americans gathered juniper berries and leaves to treat infections, arthritis, and wounds. British herbalists used juniper to promote menstruation. Nineteenth-century American herbalists used juniper as a remedy for congestive heart failure, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.

Juniper has also been used as a traditional remedy for cancer, arthritis, gas, indigestion, warts, bronchitis, tuberculosis, gallstones, colic, heart failure, intestinal disease, gout, and back pain. The berries were often eaten to relieve rheumatism or to freshen bad breath. When treating patients, doctors often chewed juniper berries to prevent infection.

General Use
Modern herbalists prescribe juniper to treat bladder infections, kidney disease, chronic arthritis, gout, rheumatic conditions, fluid retention, cystitis, skin conditions, inflammation, digestive problems, menstrual irregularities, and high blood pressure. The German Commission E has approved juniper berries for use in treating heartburn and dyspepsia (indigestion), belching, and other digestive disturbances.

Juniper is a powerful diuretic. The volatile oil contained in juniper is composed of compounds that stimulate the kidneys to remove fluid and bacterial waste products from the body. This diuretic action is useful in such conditions as congestive heart failure, urinary infections, and kidney disease.

The oil also has antiseptic properties, which makes it a useful disinfectant treatment for urinary and bladder infections. The German Commission E reported that juniper caused an increase in urine flow and smooth muscle contractions. Juniper may be combined with other herbs such as uva ursi, parsley, cleavers, or buchu to treat bladder infections. In fact, juniper may help treat bladder infections more effectively when combined with other herbs.

Juniper's anti-inflammatory properties help to relieve the inflammation, stiffness, and pain that are present in conditions like arthritis, rheumatism, and gout. The berries can be made into an ointment and rubbed on the affected joints and muscles. The tree needles may be crushed and added to a bath to ease aching muscles. Some people may find relief from the nerve, muscle, joint, and tendon pains of gout and rheumatoid arthritis by applying a compress made from an infusion of juniper berries.

Juniper is also warming to the digestive system and increases the production of stomach acid, stimulates the appetite, settles the stomach, and relieves gas.

A steam distillation process is used to extract the essential oil of juniper from the ripe dried berries. This aromatic oil has a light, fruity fragrance that is psychologically uplifting during periods of low energy, anxiety, and general weakness. Applied topically, essential oil of juniper has a warming effect on the skin and helps to promote the removal of fluid and waste products from tissues. External applications also help relieve sore muscles, joint and lower back pain, and can be used to clear up acne, eczema, and varicose veins. To stimulate menstruation, juniper oil can be added to a carrier oil and used in a sitz bath or massage. Steam inhalation of the essential oil may also help relieve coughs and lung conditions such as bronchitis.

Consumers should use juniper oil sparingly and should not use more than the recommended dose. Six or more drops of juniper oil can have a toxic effect. Any aromatherapy essential oil should be diluted in a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed oil before external use.

Preparations
The ripe, berries and needles from the tree are used in herbal medicine. Juniper is available in bulk form as whole berries, or as a supplement in the form of capsules or tinctures.

The recommended tincture dosage is 10-20 drops four times daily.

Teas are often taken to relieve digestive problems. To make a tea, 1 cup of boiling water is poured over 1 tablespoon of juniper berries. The mixture is covered and steeped for 10-20 minutes. One cup can be drunk two times daily. The tea should not be used for longer than two weeks at a time. A clean cloth may be soaked in the cooled mixture to create a compress.2

E-mail us at oilandessence@aol.com with questions or to place an order!

1 http://www.health-care-clinic.org/alternative-medicines/juniper-berry.htm
2 http://www.altmd.com/Articles/Juniper--Encyclopedia-of-Alternative-Medicine

Bolster Your Kidney Function for Better Health

The kidneys remove waste products from the blood and help to control blood pressure. They filter over 200 quarts of blood each day and remove over 2 quarts of waste products and water, which flow into the bladder as urine. Strong kidneys are essential for good health.

Inefficient or damaged kidneys can result in wastes accumulating in the blood and causing serious damage. high blood pressure can be a cause and a result of chronic kidney failure, since kidneys are central to blood regulation. Kidney inflammation can be caused by structural defects, poor diet or bacterial infection from E-Coli, Staph, and other bacteria.

Abnormal proteins trapped the glomeruli can also cause inflammation and damage to your kidneys. This disease can flare up in a few days or be chronic, taking months or years to develop. The mildest forms may not show any symptoms except through a urine test. At more advanced stages, the urine can appear smoky and eventually red as the kidneys begin to fail.

Symptoms of poor kidney function:

Infrequent or inefficient urinations

Swelling, especially around the ankles

Labored breathing due to fluid accumulation in chest

Bags under the eyes

White spots on the nails

Moist palms

Symptoms of kidney inflammation or infection include:

Feeling of discomfort in the lower back

Drowsiness

Nauseous

Smokey or red-colored urine

To reduce kidney infection, drink a gallon of water mixed with 8 oz. of unsweetened cranberry juice daily and use applications of Geranium, Thyme, and Spice Traders essential oils. The OIL and Essence supplements, Defense and Vitamin C, are also beneficial. You can ingest the oil in a capsule twice daily for 10 days or with rice milk 2-4 times a day (use Thyme internally with caution as it can irritate mucous membranes). You can also make a cold compress with them 1-2 times daily over the kidney area. A vita-flex massage with 1-3 drops of oil on the kidney points on the feet would also be helpful.

A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in the kidney from mineral or protein breakdown products in the urine. Occasionally, larger stones can become trapped and block urine flow, causing intense pain. Kidney stones can also cause dangerous infection. You should always consult a qualified health professional before beginning any treatment for kidney stones.

Some of the symptoms of kidney stones include:

Persistent, penetrating pain in the side or lower back

Blood in the urine

Fainting

Red eyelids

It is very important to drink plenty of water (at least 6 eight-ounce glasses daily) to help pass a kidney stone. Recommended oils to break down stones are Wintergreen and Lemon oils. You can make a warm compress and use 6-10 drops of oil over the kidney area 1-2 times daily. You can also do a vita flex massage with 2-3 drops of oil on the kidney points on the feet. As with the oils for kidney inflammation, you can also take them in a capsule (with the exception of Wintergreen; do not take Wintergreen internally), twice daily or with rice milk 2-4 times daily. Native Enzymes and apple cider vinegar would also be helpful (do NOT take Vitamin C). 1

It is wise to do a cleanse one to two times a year to bolster your liver and kidney function. This can be done with freshly made apple juice. (Do not use store bought juice as it is pasturized and will not be effective.) Fresh apple juice is very acidic and will aid in breaking down any stone present and flushing out toxic buildup.

To do the cleanse, use mostly sweet apples -- add just enough sour apples to achieve a pleasant taste. Drink in small sips and hold each sip in your mouth for a while to let it blend with your saliva. People with unhealthy digestive tract microflora can suffer from some stomach discomfort, such as bloating, after drinking the juice. To prevent this, you can filter the remaining pulp particles from the juice. You can earlier prepare your digestive system to be able to handle hight acid content by drinking half a glass of apple juice 15 minutes before each meal during the proceeding week. The cleansing lasts three days. It requires abstaining from any food and outdoor physical activity is beneficial.

Each day of the procedure, drink only apple juice in the following amounts:

8 am -- 1 glass

10 am -- 1 glass

12 noon -- 2 glasses

2 pm -- 2 glasses

4 pm -- 2 glasses

6 pm -- 1 glass

8 pm -- 1 glass

If no bowel movement occurs during the therapy, an enema can be performed or drink stool-softening herbal teas. 2

If you have had recurrent kidney stones, you may find it helpful to completely eliminate or limit your intake of the foods and beverages that are high in oxalates or that can produce oxalic acid. This includes caffeine (coffee and black tea), cocoa, chocolate, spinach, sorrel, beets, swiss chard, parsley, dried figs, poppy seeds, rhubarb, lam, nuts, and pepper. Also, eating foods rich in Vitamin A will discourage the formation of stones. This includes apricots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, and cantaloupe. Drinking a glass of distilled water with fresh lemon squeezed into it every day may also be helpful. 3

When we keep our kidneys healthy, we can avoid the formation of painful kidney stones. With well functioning kidneys, we urinate 3-4 times a day. When our bodies filters are clear, we will have more energy and a general feeling of well-being.

E-mail us at oilandessence@aol.com to if you have questions or to place an order!

1. Essential Oils Desk Reference, 4th Edition, January 2009

2. Can We Live 150 Years? Having thought we could control all infectious agents through the development of a series of vaccines, scientists are discovering that viruses are much more complex than we might have originally thought. The good news is that there are many therapeutic grade essential oils that we have to work with.

A CAPSULE OF GENETIC MATERIAL
Viruses are basically a capsule of genetic material (either DNA or RNA)enclosed in a protein coating called a capsid. Viruses may have an additional membrane around them which is called an envelope. Viruses attach themselves to a host cell at receptor sites on the host’s membrane. Different viruses seem to prefer specific types of host cells – not only in terms of whether the host is human, animal or plant, but also the type of cell it will attach itself to. Viruses attack not only plants, animals and humans, but bacteria and fungi as well.

Once attached, the virus injects its genetic material into the host cell. At this point the virus may stay dormant for days, weeks or longer. At some point, the virus activates itself and begins to take over various aspects of the host cell’s metabolism; cellular reproduction is the key, of course, because this is how the virus replicates itself in order to create a bona fide infection.

VIRUSES AS MASTER ENGINEERS
Viruses are natural genetic engineers. Having successfully taken over the host cell, viruses begin to replicate their genetic material. Often, portions of genetic material from the host cell are combined with the viral DNA/RNA, producing a virus with a new genetic pattern. In this way, a virus can constantly re-enegineer itself in a very short period of time. It is for this reason scientists have such a difficult time devising an antidote to something as common as the common cold. With viruses constantly adjusting their DNA and including pieces of the host’s DNA, it is literally impossible to come up with one vaccine to attack all the permutations of some virus families. More reseach continues to be done to understand exactly how viruses activate themselves once inside a host cell. Other research is focusing on destroying viral envelopes and with it, the virus itself.

ESSENTIAL OILS TO THE RESCUE
The good news is that we have essential oils! We have known for some time that essential oils are effective anti-viral agents. We just don’t know why they are effective. Many scientists think its because of their chemistry while others think it is their biology. In other words, is it the chemical interaction of the essential oil with the virus that helps keep a viral infection at bay or is it the interaction of the essential oil with our biology that keeps us healthy? For now, the debate continues.

SECONDARY METABOLITES
Essential oils are part of a group of chemical compounds called secondary metabolites. What that means is that these are compounds that are derived from primary products produced within the plant. They are produced in small amounts and in many cases, have no immediate functions within the physiology of the plant. What we do know is that these secondary metabolites do interact with the plant’s environment, including animals and humans. Since these secondary metabolites are produced in such small quantities, they were initially ignored by researchers as unimportant. More than 200,000 different secondary metabolites that are produced in quantities of less than 1% have so far been documented. While we still don’t fully understand their functions within the plant, we are beginning to understand that these secondary metabolites are critical to human health and well being. Much research is going on to discover more about their healing properties.

GLOBAL IMMUNOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN
One of the first recommendations when you read a bit about combatting viruses is how critical a healthy, functioning immune system is. Many scientists propose that the reason we are seeing so much viral infestation in the world today is because our immune systems have been overwhelmed by enviromental pollution, the general sedentary lifestyle, the collapse of our dietary and nutritional support, the overuse of antibiotics and endemic stress placed on our bodies. The rise in auto-immune diseases such as RA, lupus, etc. is additional evidence, these scientists would argue.

Clearly, viruses have always been extremely dangerous, producing pandemics such as the 1918 influenza epidemic and threatening public health in the form of the ebola, HIV or SARS viruses. Some types of cancers have been traced back to viruses as well.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bHWYEIx38YM/TIcUQnHt9fI/AAAAAAAAALY/bnuo7y9cv7k/s320/lymphnode.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514398544350279154" />THE AMAZING LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Our lymphatic system is our first line of defense agains viruses. The lymphatic system has a number of functions critical to life: it manages our fluid balance, draining water and proteins from our interstitial fluid, returning them to the blood stream. Through our lymph nodes, it filters out harmful pathogens from our blood and other fluids. Unlike the circulatory system which has a powerful pump (the heart) to move blood around our body, the lymphatic system relies on muscle contractions (i.e., skeletal movement) to move lymph through the system. With our sedentary lifestyles, it is no wonder then that we see more immune system problems in modern society. In addition to getting more exercise on a regular basis, we also have Manual Lymph Drainage, or MLD, which can move lymph around the lymphatic system. Abgood massage on a regular basis or using a rebounder for several minutes a day will also assist our lymphatic system to drain and cleanse itself.

There are also studies that suggest that many viruses attach to the same receptor sites as neuropeptides – evidence some scientists propose that we when we are happy we are less able to get ill! And, of course, we have wonderful essential oils to help cleanse and purify our immune system.

ESSENTIAL OILS TO COMBAT VIRUSES AND SUPPORT OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

When you research anti-viral essential oils, you will most likely find discussions of oils that support the immune system. Only recently has research on the secondary metabolites discussed above shown the effectiveness of essential oils and their constituent compounds against viruses. So, let’s divide our exploration of specific essential oils into two categories: those that support our immune system and those that are specifically anti-viral.

IMMUNE BOOSTER OILS
As I mentioned above, there is much more research available to us on the ability of essential oils to boost our immune system. Studies show that oils such as bay laurel, basil, frankincense and angelica invigorate and stimulate the immune system. Most of these oils stimulate the lymphatic system. Bay laurel, in addition to stimulating the formation of lymphocytes also regulates the lymphatic system. Peppermint stimulates the movement of lymph fluid. Clearly this is of benefit when we are in the throws of an infection of any kind.

THE ENDOCRINE CONNECTION
Our endocrine system acts as a communication system in our body, directing and triggering a number of metabolic activities based on information it receives from all our other physiological systems. We have a number of essential oils that are known to balance and harmonize our endocrine system including geranium, fennel, myrtle, sage, vitex, rose and helichrysum. In Chinese medicine, these oils are described as yin nourishing and as such, they nourish and balance our endocrine system helping it to better respond and coordinate our body’s response to infection.

DECONGESTING & CLEANSING LYMPH
Another concept you will read about when looking at essential oils to support the lymphatic system are oils that help to decongest or cleanse the lymphatic system. Since the lymphatic system filters and drains impurities (cellular waste -- including viruses and bacteria), it is not uncommon for lymph nodes to become congested or stagnant. Swollen glands are a common manifestation of lymph nodes that have become overwhelmed with the infection. We have a number of essential oils that can help move that congestion out of the lymph glands to allow our lymphatic system to get back to the process of filtering and draining impurities from our bodies: cypress, grapefruit, juniper, lemon, cajeput, ravensare, ravintsara and pine oils are just a few to consider. I apply the oil or blend directly over the swollen glands in a warm compress. Cellulite is also a place where our bodies will store impurities that our lymphatic system has not been able to drain. We have a number of essential oils that are reputed to assist in the cleansing of cellulite including carrot seed oil, cypress, fennel, ginger, juniper, grapefruit, geranium, lemon, lime, mandarin, sweet orange, rosemary, tangerine and sage essential oils.

WHITE BLOOD CELL PRODUCTION
In addition to the above oils that stimulate and decongest the lymphatic system, there are a few oils that have been proven effective in stimulating the production of white blood cells: lavender, bergamot, lemon, niaouli, rosemary, tea tree and ravintsara.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 318px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_bHWYEIx38YM/TIcUi13634I/AAAAAAAAALg/5-k7Lkq3DAw/s320/1-influenza-virus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514398857548193666" />SPECIFICALLY ANTI-VIRAL ESSENTIAL OILS
The good news is that over the past several years there has been more research regarding essential oils and their efficacy against specific viruses. Please note that it is critical to begin applying essential oils as soon as you begin to notice any symptoms. Research shows that the earlier we begin using oils, the more effective they are in stopping and slowing the infection.

ANTI-VIRAL POWERHOUSES
For other viral infections, the following oils are considered the strongest anti-viral essential oils: melissa, tarragon and ravintsara are considered the strongest of all essential oils for viral infections. Other oils such as clove, cinnamon, oregano, thyme thuyanol, thyme, thymol and cassia are considered broadspectrum anti-microbial essential oils. If you are not sure whether you are dealing with a virus or other pathogen, these oils offer a good first line of defense against infection. They are all high in phenols and their complex chemistry can make them irritating when used topically, so care should be used when using these oils.

Interview with Rebecca

Rebecca at the Well is another Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils dealer. It would be preferable to have oils on both lists for an Essential Remedy Chest, however, if you have to choose between the two, I recommend starting out with the Blends List. If necessary, start small and add to your chest as you are able.

Blends can be more cost effective if you are just starting out building your healing remedy chest and can give you a wider spectrum of use. There are times when you will want only one particular oil, but overall, I have found that most blends work well. A most powerful essential oil such as Helichrysum Italicum is very expensive, but you can gain benefit from it in blends such as Gentle Healer or Freedom. Another expensive oil is Frankincense but it has been found very effective in cancer treatment and can be extremely valuable to anyone suffering from this. Vitex is very foundational in healing and well worth the cost if needed. You may want to adjust the list to include blends such as Hair Support, Skincare and/or Baby Soft if you have needs that these blends address. Re-prioritize the list based on your own families needs.

Singles Essential Remedy Chest
(15 ml, 5 ml)
Vitamin C $15.00
Lavender $17.00, $9.50
Oregano $21.00, $12.00
Peppermint $18.00, $10.00
Melaleuca (Tea Tree) $15.00, $7.00
Helichrysum Italicum $136.00, $66.00
Cinnamon Bark $31.00, $16.00
Lemongrass $11.00, $7.00
Clove Bud $12.00, $7.00
Rose Geranium $36.00, $13.50

TOTAL $312.00, $163.00

Blends Essential Remedy Chest
(15 ml, 5 ml)
Vitamin C $15.00
Lavender $17.00, $9.50
Oregano $21.00, $12.00
Peppermint $18.00, $10.00
Gentle Healer $19.00, $10.50
Spice Traders $26.00, $13.50
Purify $16.00, $8.50
Relief $36.00, $18.50
Freedom $14.00, $7.50
BreathEZ $17.00, $9.00

TOTAL $199.00, $114.00

BreathEZ ~ Formulated to assist the respiratory system and be beneficial for bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, laryngitis, flu, fevers, colds, coughs, sore throats, cold sores, sinusitis, lung infections, loosens and expels mucus and reduces inflammation. Vitamin C plays a part in almost all aspects of our health and well-being. This powerful vitamin also contributes to the production of stress hormones and the neurotransmitter serotonin which enhances your mood. It may help prevent arteriosclerosis by combating abnormal blood clotting, high blood pressure and plaque buildup leading to hardening of the arteries. Because Vitamin C is an antioxidant which battles damage-causing free radicals; scientific evidence indicates it may work along with vitamin E to help prevent cancer. The synergism of the two vitamins produces a greater effect than either vitamin can separately. OIL & Essence’s Vitamin C contains ninety 800 mg capsules per bottle and is highly absorbable. Each capsule contains Calcium Ascorbate, Bioflavinoids, Alfalfa, Parsley, Rutin, and Hesperidin. Only one capsule of our exclusive Vitamin C is needed with every two capsules of Defense. Our proprietary formula contains Calcium Ascorbate, Bioflavinoids, Alfafa, Parsley, Rutin and Hesperidin. As an antioxidant, Vitamin C scavenges free radicals in the body. It promotes the absorption of iron, while preventing oxidation and is a vital co-factor to the formation of collagen, the connective tissue that supports arterial walls, skin, bones, and teeth. More Vitamin C is contained in the adrenal glands than any other organ in the body and is required at higher levels during times of stress. Physical stresses on the body such as ingestion of heavy metals, cigarette smoking, infections, extreme temperatures, and chronic use of certain medications such as aspirin also signal the need for increased intake of Vitamin C. Our bodies cannot manufacture vitamin C. It is a water soluble vitamin, which means that the body flushes it out continually, so it needs to be replaced daily. ~ $13.00

Calm Those Nerves

When you're suffering from anxiety and your nerves are getting the best of you, there are several things you can do to calm those nervous jitters. Exercise is a wonderful way to work the stress out. Sometimes the thing we least want to do is the thing we need the most. Exercise boosts immunity, gets your blood flowing and it releases endorphins to bring back that refreshed feeling. Some other simple things to do are to practice rythmic breathing, listen to calming music, practice Tai Chi or Yoga. One of my favorites is to get a massage or acupuncture. Of course, these reqire two people. Tapping is another effective technique that has effects similar to acupuncture but you can do it yourself. For tapping techniques, visit the MTT website.

OIL & Essence contains several wonderful blends that are very effective at helping to calm stressed out nerves as well. Acceptance is one of my favorites, containing Sandalwood, Organic Lemon, and Vanilla Bourbon. This has a fresh lemon-vanilla scent and assists in bringing a feeling of acceptance, calming emotions, easing tension, anger, frustration, resentment, and feelings of isolation and aggression. It has a sedatitive effect that is quieting to obsessive behavior while bringing warm memories, awareness, and joy. It stimulates the brain, clears thoughts, aids concentration and meditation, and is supporting in cases of low self-confidence or fear and it helps in removing negative programming from the cells. 15 ml ~ $20.00

Another great oil is called Peacemaker, containg Litsea Cubaba, Lime, Mandarin, Pink Grapefruit, Tangerine, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang Extra. This formula assists in bringing a sense of peace into our lives. The oils are cheering, uplifting, stimulating, balancing and restorative. It brings back child-like energy and gives confidence, carries oxygen to the brain, helps remove negative programming from the cells, and calms the nerves. It assists in balancing the equilibrium and heart functions, supports all the systems of the body, is anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious and a general tonic. It is beneficial for meditation, depression, dispelling anger, fear, anxiety, relieving grief and stress; it is a very refreshing blend of oils. 15 ml ~ $18.00

You can use essential oils during massage, even if simply used on the ears. There are points on the outer ear that are especially effective at calming the nerves. They could also be used to enhance any meridian tapping techniques that are used.

We've got several other blends that would be beneficial to use on nervous tension as well as many individual oils. Angelica, Blue Tansy, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Frankincense, Ginger, Hyssop, Lavender, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Sandalwood, Spruce, and Valerian are all essential oils known for their calming effect to the nervous system. E-mail me at oilandessence@aol.com to find out what can be best for you, personally!

"Oh the nerves, the nerves; the mysteries of this machine called man! When your digestion is suffering, every day can be just miserable. You don’t know what to eat. You suffer from heartburn, constipation, diarrhea and countless other, less obvious troubles. You become a prisoner of your own digestive system. The reason this happens is that your have got an unhealthy build-up of “bad” bacteria. As a result, the walls of your intestines become weak and vulnerable. That “opens the door” for toxins to walk right into your bloodstream. No wonder you feel miserable.

But it doesn’t have to be that way anymore! Our exclusive formula helps colonize every square inch of your intestine with the “good guys” that crowd out and kill the bad bacteria you don’t want. It is interesting to note that inside our intestinal tract are over 100 trillion bacteria. Not all bacteria are bad. The “good guys” are classified as probiotics and are absolutely essential for your health and survival. Native Flora provides a full five billion “good guys” in every capsule.

When there is not enough “good” bacteria in you intestine, your food is devoured by “bad,” gas-producing bacteria. These bad guys are notorious for giving off carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and the ever-so-smelly methane gas. When the gas gets trapped, you get that full, bloated feeling you wish would go away. Even worse, the gas can build up until you feel as if you’re being stabbed.

These remarkable probiotics, longevity boosters, were first discovered in 1907 by a Russian scientist studying an isolated group of mountain peasants who regularly lived over a hundred years in astounding good health. It turned out that their daily diet was simply overflowing with these friendly bacteria. Our bodies require a healthy gut flora to function at it's best and the connections these friendly bacteria hold to our mental health is also astounding. When it comes down to it, a healthy gut allows us to have a healthy mind.

Native Flora includes 16 strains of soil based homeostatic micro organisms and are the master key that unlocks a lifetime of good health. They help with the digestion and absorption of nutrients from your food. They break down dairy products for easier digestion, help prevent constipation and help fight viruses.

The typical acidophilus capsules are a waste of your money. Since your stomach kills the friendly bacteria in most probiotics before they reach you intestine you need to be using only micro-encapsulated probiotics. Native Flora can thrive in the toughest digestive environments and are unharmed by stomach and bile acids. Not only does the micro-encapsulated Native Flora ensure the probiotics will reach your intestine, but it also makes refrigeration unnecessary. This means they are fresh and ready whenever and wherever you need them.

When you check the label on most probiotics products, chances are they only include one to ten types of friendly bacteria. That's just NOT enough. Native Flora includes ALL sixteen essential types of friendly bacteria in one tiny capsule. You need all 16 essential varieties of probiotics to keep your digestive system working properly.

Lets take a look at what only four varieties of the probiotics will do for you. The Bifidobacteria longum type of bacteria is one of the most important types in your digestive system. Once these “friendly” bacteria are unleashed, they help your body destroy harmful toxins, break down carbs, neutralize free radicals, boost vitamin production, and control and adjust the pH of your gut, so unfriendly bacteria doesn’t have a chance.

If you ever have any problems digesting dairy products you could have a serious shortage of Bifidobacteria bifidum. The B. bifidum is the dairy king and lives in both the large and small intestine. Without B. bifidum, your body can not produce the essential enzymes it needs to break down those tough-to-digest dairy products. As a result, you get gas, bloating, and stomach upset every time. The older you get, the less B.bifidum you have. It is absolutely essential that you restore this essential bacteria to the same levels you had 20 or 30 years ago.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is essential for a healthy small intestine and it easily attaches itself to the intestine wall. The L. acidophilus acts almost like a gatekeeper that crowds out the harmful bacteria before it can enter directly into your bloodstream. The healthy nutrients you need pass right through and the “bad guys” are kept out. This helps ensure that your body absorbs the essential nutrients you need to stay healthy.

The Lactobacillus bulgaricus acts as the “support system” for all the other friendly bacteria in your digestive system. It helps guarantee that you have sufficient numbers of the “good guys” for your digestive system to stay trouble-free.

Native Flora contains:

Stabilized Rice Bran is the result of the specialized processing of rice concentrates and extracts. Being an all-natural whole food, Stabilized Rice Bran works synergistically to restore optimal health. Blueberries are rich in many healthy phytochemicals, including the pro-anthocyanins and phenolics which are being studied for their anti-aging and anti-cancer benefits.

Probiotics of Lactobacillus rhanmnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, Streptococcus thermophilu, Lactobacillus plantaru, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus lactis, Lactobacillus peracasei, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus brevis are in Native Flora. They work synergistically together, meaning the whole is more beneficial than just the separate parts; all of these factors are necessary and the best insurance for a fully functional future. Eating primarily plant-based diet, comprised mostly of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, and seeds, plus plenty of water each day can help you achieve this. Leading an active life with at least 30 minutes of physical exercise and sunshine 5 days a week will also greatly help mental health. Reading, writing, planning, interacting with others, and learning new things will help you to stay mentally active. It is also very important to get at least 7 hours of restful sleep a night, with some additional quiet time during the day.

Rice Plus is one of the most nutrient-dense food sources on the planet. Twenty-eight vials of DNA were given (one each) to 28 researchers trained in how to generate and feel feelings, and they each had strong emotions. It was discovered that the DNA changed its shape according to the feelings of the researchers: When the researchers felt love, gratitude, and appreciation, the DNA responded by relaxing and the strands unwound. The length of the DNA became longer. When the researchers felt anger, fear, stress orfrustration, the DNA responded by tightening up. It became shorter and switched off many of the DNA codes! If you''ve ever felt "shut down" by negative emotions, now you know why your body was equally shut down too. The researchers found that the shut down DNA codes could be reversed and turned back on again when feelings of appreciation, gratitude, love, and joy were felt by them.

Brainstorm creates this balancing effect assisting the DNA codes to relax, soothing the nervous system, and balancing the equilibrium and heart function. It assists in overcoming grief, anxiety, depression, stress, fear, anger, mental fatigue, and poor self-esteem. When we get angry or won’t forgive we create barriers that keep us from going forward.
