Manila Bulletin : MANILA, Philippines -- Truth be told, an artist's foremost subject, to be poignant and effective, must come from the recesses of his or her heart. It doesn't matter if it's quite ordinary or probably hackneyed for as long as it's sincere and honest. Of course, considering the many stimuli readily available today, we can just imagine how difficult it must be for artists to stay true to themselves and to remain uninfluenced by things that may be a bit unnecessary. However, if the artist pays homage to something innate in him or her and explores something of second nature to his or her life, then there wouldn't be a problem, would there?

US-based Filipino abstractionist Edwin Wilwayco is one such artist who paints what is very close to his heart, making his pieces resonate to viewers in deep, inexplicable ways that music and nature affect us. Rightly so, for this accomplished painter's lyrical opuses have always been inspired by the cadence of music and the beauty of nature. In fact, the abstractionist's latest body of work, which he will be showing at the Galleria Duemila, follows the trail by which has stirred his most potent paintings.

Titled ''Second Nature'', Wilwayco's exhibit showcases 31 works rendered in oil and created in various hues and sizes. Wilwayco says the pieces have been heavily influenced by reminiscences and impressions of his travels and his intimate encounters with nature.

''Mariposa'', an exquisitely painted abstraction in dainty colors of pink and red neutralized by grey typifies a mariposa lily flower; ''Wind on Water'' in different hues of green portrays verdant pastures and the ripple effect of flowing water in a lake or in a riverbank; ''Dance of the Little Fairies'' in whimsical swathes of light blue, lilac, and periwinkle is the painter's imaginings of petite fairies (which, he says, many of his friends have felt lurking around in his home-cum-studio in Parañaque); 'Border Crossing', meanwhile, is a ''pigeon-grey fan triptych'' in muted grey, ochre, and blue offers viewers breathing space, as if evoking an area for contemplation.

While Wilwayco didn't eschew his beloved subjects, he did, this time, paint them in differently. One can see the mature aesthetic sensibilities in Wilwayco's pieces, as well as his gutsiness to further explore forms and shapes. Wilwayco has used more monotones and applied larger sheathes of colors ''whether to unmask the undercoating or to punctuate a surface'' in his latest showing. His gestural brushwork in most of his oeuvres is still energetic yet seemingly unhurried; it's more fluid in feeling, as if his brush had been dipped into a sieve and had taken on a more meditative stance.

Art critic Cid Reyes writes, ''These current abstractions are emanations of his ardor and passion for nature, rooted in the landscape paradigm of so many abstractionists, from Hans Hoffman (''I bring the landscape home with me''), Joan Mitchell (''I carry my landscapes around with me'') to Jackson Pollock, who thundered ''I am Nature!'' With such awesome forebears, no wonder that abstraction has become second nature to Edwin Wilwayco.''

For sure though, Wilwayco still masterfully paints with a lot of heart-his pieces, which are generously informed and aware of his surroundings and his emotions, are a testament to this. It's amazing how years of practice and experience have made Wilwayco indubitably in sync with things that echo his sentiments and his passion for anything delicate and may be unnoticeable by others-the morning mist, the nuances and spirituality of nature, the rhythmic flow of water, the fragments of dream, and the shift of light and color. All these, it seems, Wilwayco is in touch with...as if he magically summons and evokes them in his canvases.
