BRONX, NEW YORK, Feb. 6- The Bronx hearing on the new proposed State Assembly and State Senate district lines came and passed all in one short week.
As we told you last week the timing seemed to be done so there would be little or no opposition to the new district lines, since many people would be informed of the hearings after them. The chairs of the New York State Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment were Assemblyman John J. McEneny and Senator Michael F. Nuzzolio. Also on the stage was Brooklyn Senator Martin Dilan, while the only Bronx elected official in the audience was State Senator Jeff Klein. There were representatives or staff members of several other Bronx elected officials in the audience also.
The first speaker was from the Morris Park Community Association who, with the approval of the chairman of the committee, brought up several other members of MPCA and community residents. Of Morris Park. “Dividing up the Morris Park Community for political reasons is not acceptable,” Al D'Angelo the President of MPCA said. He and the others with him gave the committee a petition with 2350 local community signatures (all gathered in one day) against taking 20 percent of Morris Park out of the 80th Assembly District. Joe Thompson a past candidate for the 80th A.D. said that it makes no sense to divide one of the most stable communities in the current assembly district. He also questioned the removal of Italian Americans from the 80th A.D. to another district since the 80th A.D. is currently represented by Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera.
Other speakers in the group complained of the very short notification of the hearing, and that the new lines for the 80th A.D. have been gerrymandered so that three possible contenders to the current incumbent are no longer in the 80th A.D. One interesting note was that many of the speakers had high praise for their current State Senator Jeff Klein, with some saying that he has continued working hard for the community from when he was the assemblyman of the 80th A.D.
There were a few residents of the Bedford Park Norwood area that questioned the connection of Senator Klein’s new district lines that cut through their neighborhood to connect the East and West Bronx. Community Board # 7 District Manager Fernando Tirado spoke as a resident of the Bedford Park Norwood area against the splitting of the area into two State Senate districts. Don Bluestone director of the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center questioned the change of having his community center, Montefiore and North Bronx Central Hospitals, and the Williamsbridge Oval placed in the 34th Senate District.
A representative of Common Cause argued with the chairs of the committee over the drawing of the district line, and said that Common Cause suggests districts that are more uniform in shape. The reply from Senator Nuzzolio was that district line scan not be easily drawn to be the same size and shape adding that there are different population growths and shifts, as well as natural occurring boundaries that are not uniform.
There were speakers from the Dominican American Round Table that requested when the congressional lines are drawn that there be a Latino congressional district drawn consisting of Washington Heights, the Northwest Bronx and the Corona section of Queens. Even the Yonkers City Council President was on hand to ask why there was no hearing scheduled for Westchester County. He had concerns over the changing of the state senate lines for the City of Yonkers and how it might decrease the influence of the voters of that city.
Right now as it stands here are the primary and general election dates for 2012. April 24th is the Presidential Primary, and New York could play an important part in the Republican choice this year. June 26th is the new date for federal elections such as congress and U.S. Senate. September 11th is the date for State Assembly and State Senate primaries. November 6th is the date for the general election. Under these dates set forth it is possible for a state legislator to run for a congressional seat, and if he or she were to loose they could then have enough time to petition for their state seat.

800 pot plants recovered in Morris Park bust

BRONX, NEW YORK, Feb. 1- A small army of police raided a five-story building in Van Nest and discovered the climate controlled building was being used to grow and package marijuana, removing nearly 800 of the illegal plants.

Officers from the 49th Precinct spent much of the day removing the plants, after members of the NYPD's Narcotics Borough Bronx executed a search warrant on Tuesday, January 31, at 610 Morris Park Avenue, just five short blocks away from the NYPD's Transit District 12 headquarters.

Inside the five-story building police discovered the commercial building had been turned into a hydroponics oasis with an elaborate irrigation system and ventilation system-- with some plants as, pardon the pun, high as 7-feet tall.

One business owner from the block, who was away on a job at the time of the police operation, stated, "I don't know what your talking about."

A resident of the block, repeated, "I was downtown working." The shocked resident continued, "Really, that's unbelievable... the building’s like it always is, it just opens and closes once in awhile." He then added,"I guess they were that good" until they got caught.

The New York City Department of Building's (DOB) lists the location as an, "E-1 Warehouse," with two complaints and five open violations. Oddly, there are no names listed as the legal owner of the property.

Police would not give an estimate on the street value on the haul, discuss suspects, or elaborate on what led them to the location, as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, police arrested three men in connection with the pot farm: Brian Munoz, Diego Reyes and Victor Reyes. All three were charged with criminal possession of marijuana and criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
