Another Fail with Cebu Pacific Air

Last December 18, 2014, I received a text message from Cebu Pacific that my flight on January 14, 2015 “has been changed due to aircraft situation.” I got this ticket in their famous “Peso Sale” way back June 2014. I also received an email from them and they even attempted to call me but I was not able to get it.

From 2:45 PM, the flight was moved to 2:20 PM, sure, just a mere 25 minutes difference. But when you are travelling prior to your flight, you do not want to risk the 25 minutes. So I decided to rebook my flight instead. I have been flying frequently and have experienced this changes in CEB and in other airlines before and I was rebooked for free, no hassles.

When I called their hotline, I got the shock of my life when I was told that I have no options but to fly in that flight or to forfeit my ticket. Those were the free options. But wait, I can rebook or request for a refund, but, FOR A FEE! I have to pay additional 1,200 pesos to rebook to another flight or to have my money back. I told the CSR that I think it is against the law and I will just call back after I read the Passenger Bill of Rights. In fairness to that 1^st CSR, she did offer me a travel fund, but I want my money cash, not in any travel fund because I do not want to fly with CEB anymore (I have 3 more RT tickets left).

After an hour, I called back and presented the same scenario. The same reason was given, that it was just a “minor adjustment.” I insisted that when you are travelling, 25 minutes is already significant. I do not live in the airport! I have to travel by land prior to the flight! The 2^nd CSR put me on hold for so long I got tired, I dropped the call. And take note, he refute the claim of the 1^st CSR that I can opt for the travel fund.

I was not satisfied so after 2 hours, I called again. This time, a gentle 3^rd CSR was on the other end. I presented the situation and these are the options presented:

1. I have to be on the flight (which is 25 minutes earlier than the original)

2. I will give up my ticket without compensation (meaning I donate my money to them)

3. Rebook with an additional fee of 1200 pesos

4. Cancellation with a fee of 1200 pesos

Imagine those options, harap harapang panloloko. It is not even forces of nature; it is the airlines fault that the flight was rescheduled! When she said that it was “voluntary cancellation,” I was not able to control myself and uttered some profanities. She offered me another option though, she will escalate the situation and request for a waiver of the fees. She instructed me to call after 24 hours.

They keep insisting that the 25 minutes is just a "little adjustment," when in fact even if you are in front of them 45 minutes before the ETD of your flight, they close the check-in counter insisting that it is already 45-minutes, your are late and you have to book another ticket. Yes, I am speaking from experience.

I sure wish the action would be positive. There are only two airlines flying to our planes and the other one is expensive. Truly, along with a cheap fare is a cheap service. From the booking of the ticket, there are already the attempted panloloko (Read article here). I am not that gullible, I know the business strategies of some companies. Well, I just wish that more airlines will invest in our country, so that there would be more competitions.

#50kOn2015 Challenge!!!

Last 2014, I have introduced the Project 104, wherein every payday, 15^th and 30^th of the month for most of us, we set aside a certain percentage of our salary for our savings. As for me, at the end of the year, I have saved a six-digit figure. I wished some of you too have been doing that project with me.

For this year, I am introducing the #50kOn2015 Challenge! In this money challenge, I urge you to save every week. I have outlined a schedule (every Monday) wherein we will set aside first a hundred, then two hundred and so on until it becomes 1000 pesos. When we reached the 1000-peso-week, by this time we have become used to budgeting and spending what is left with our salaries. This will be our maximum weekly savings since not all of us are earning big and a 1000-peso savings a week is already a significant amount.

On the following weeks, we will continue to save 1000 pesos per week until November 30 when we increase it to 1500 pesos, up until the last week, making our savings a total of 50,000 pesos!

Now to make this more exciting, think of a thing or project to which you will be spending this money for. From my experience before, if I do not have a prior plan for a savings, I end up being sick and using the saved up money in the hospital.

For this #50kOn2015 Challenge, I will be using the money for a new laptop or, if my Brawny is still working by that time (I hope so!), this will be used for a trip abroad, possibly for a White Christmas.

So, do you accept the challenge? Let us all save 50,000 pesos by the end of 2015!

Excited For The Legend Villas

Yet another customer service experience for me this week. I was suppose to attend a seminar/workshop organized by our professional organization to be held at The Legend Villas in Mandaluyong. I was so excited to attend the said seminar and was even more delighted when my manager approved my attendance. I immediately processed my training request forms and other documents necessary for the said dates. When the money was already deposited to my account and my plane ticket was already booked, I immediately called The Legend Villas to book a room. I was afraid it would be fully booked due to the attendees of the said training. They offered me a very nice room at a very good price. I reserved the room and to ensure my reservation, I paid the full price of a night’s stay.

Five days before the training, and deadline for the payment to The Legend, I received an email from the organizers that the training was cancelled due to “unavoidable reasons.” I was shocked, since I already planned everything and that I already have paid for the plane ticket and the hotel! I immediately called The Legend and ask if I can still cancel my booking and ask for a refund (by the way I paid Php 3,800). I was already very anxious, since that week I have struggled with customer service of Cebu Pacific and customer service of my prepaid loading system and another customer service related to my job.

A very courteous and polite Reservations officer named Pol assisted me. I told him the situation and he assured me that the least they could offer was a rebooking, but he would still try to explain to their management that the seminar I was attending to be held at their hotel was cancelled and that I am not from Manila which is impossible for me to stay at their hotel unless I fly to the country’s capital.

I could feel Pol’s effort and his commitment to please the customer. He promised me that there would me a reply on the next working day. Came Monday morning, I send a text message and an email for a follow up. And lo and behold, no questions asked, no insisting on my part, I was asked for my bank details for the return of my payment. I was just impressed by this company. When in fact they have the right to refuse refund, but they understood my location and gave back to me an amount I would have been losing. I hope all companies are like The Legend Hotels, they look for the satisfaction of their clients. For this, I commend Pol and Bryan, and I commend this hotel. I wish I could stay here in the future. I am sure I will and a good review will be waiting, with staff like this, a stay in their hotel would be awesome!

Cebu Pacific Air -- Customer Service Failed!

With the nature of my job, I ride in a plane on an average of 48 times per year. 90% of this, I ride with Cebu Pacific Air due to their cheap flights and frequent promos. I used to fly with Airasia before but unfortunately, they have cancelled their route to my hometown. Yeah I sleep at the airport and live in my suitcase.

I have learned to love CEB as they are my home in the sky. I have shared to friends to patronize this airline. They boast of their prompt arrival and good services. I can even recognize the name of the pilots and faces of the flight attendants have become familiar. I can almost memorize their spiels on the flight. I frequently won the in-flight games as these were almost the same in each month.

Until recently, I experience a not so good interaction with them. I have a flight to Cebu on October with a friend. A month before the said flight, I received a text message that my flight is cancelled, and that we have an option either to rebook or refund the tickets. My friend and I decided that we will not continue with the trip. So our option would be the refund. I did not act on it immediately as it is still a month away. CEB finally called me but I was in a meeting so I asked for a callback, they refused, so I told them that I will be the one to call.

Just today, since I am clearing off my debts, I remember that I still have some refundable from CEB. So I called the hotline and then my blood pressure rose with the Reservations Officer who entertained me. I will not name her here, to “protect her” or whomever it is that owned that name.

I asked for a callback and she refused, so I decided to continue the call from my mobile phone even if it will cost me. I told Eloisa the situation and what pissed me off at first was that she is not sure of what to do. She always puts me on hold. Finally, she told me that a refund is not possible since the flight was just moved to another flight with a 55 minute difference. I told her I cannot continue with the flight as it would ruin my schedule. She told me that they can refund but “with applicable charges.” Hello! My ticket is promo lang po, worth 1500 pesos, e di ubos yun sa charge. I insisted that I have done it before pero sabi talaga nya hindi pwede, after several “hold the line please” perhaps to ask her seatmate.

I got so pissed of that I dropped the call after I asked her full name. I ranted on twitter and CEB snobbed me for a few minutes. Nang nagmura na ako, saka sila nag reply, they asked for my booking reference number. I told them to follow me so that I can DM the ref. no. and until now there was no reply. I am not dumb to share publicly such information.

I decided to call again the hotline hoping that Eloisa is not around and could not answer the phone. Finally, a certain Georgina answered and she did my request with few questions. Instantly! I mean hello Cebu Pacific, why would you hire employees who does not know their job? She even called me back after our convo was cut off because finally, my top up was consumed.

I am a frequent flier and I already know most of the pasikot sikot para hindi ako maloko ng airline. May isa pa akong reklamo ha, but it will be in another post! Yes, I already submitted a complaint to your portal or whatever you call it but I doubt if there will be an action. Afterall, you did not act on the complaint of my friend after you left alone an eight-year-old unaccompanied child to wander on her own when in fact you were paid to handle her.

I would still fly with you as you are really cheap. Cheap fare, cheap service! But do not attempt to rob from me na harap harapan ha? 1582.04 pesos lang pero ilang oras ko yang pag tatrabahuan at hindi ko pinupulot ang pera. I just hope that you give the good service that you brag about.

I wrote this blog post to extend to other people that if the airline cancels your flight, you can get your money back, full amount, you do not have to pay “applicable charges.” If an airline moves your flight, even one minute different from the one you book, you have the option for refund or rebooking, no questions asked. I have experienced this with CEB and Airasia, if you won’t insist, they would assume you’re ignorant and it is money lost for you. I wish I would be rich enough to fly with PAL, their service is really good.

How To Book Airline Tickets Wisely

Due to the nature of my work and to my penchant for traveling and visiting new places, I am frequently riding the plane. And for this, I have learned the “secrets” and “techniques” for booking airline tickets without paying so much, without paying for the services that you do not really need. In this post, I am using as illustration, the booking process using the Cebu Pacific website.

Step 1. Choose the Origin and Destination by pointing your mouse to the drop-down arrow (red circle). Note however that some destinations (airports) are near your original destination, so you have to be familiar with geography. (For example, if you want to go to Boracay, it can be reached via Caticlan or Kalibo).

Step 2. Choose the date of departure and return. Tick the One-way option if you want no return ticket.

Step 3. Fill out the Adults and Children category for the number of passengers, then click FIND IT!

Step 4. Tick your flight option. Promo Fares and Year-Round Fares are in separate columns. Remember that Promo Fares are non-refundable and pretty much “irrevocable”. Meaning, you cannot change this booking or if you can rebook, it is with a fee which is, usually, you end up paying way much higher than the Promo fare. So be sure of the date and time of your travel.

If you have flexible dates of travel, you use the Monthly View located at the upper right hand, to view different fare options for the month.

Step 5. Then click the Continue button.

Step 6. Now, fill up the guest details. Now, if you have a CEB CLUB membership, it would be easier as your details are saved already.

Step 7. Now this is where you should be careful with, as this is the portion where you opt to pay for services you do not really need. See, most airlines already choose by default one option. In this case, 10kg baggage is by default chosen, automatically adding up Php 180 to your bill. The technique here is to remove that, by clicking the drop down button and choosing the No baggage (if you are a lite traveler) option. Now if you have baggage, remember that buying baggage allowance online is way much cheaper than buying at the airport, believe me, you will get the surprise of your life! When in the web it is Php 180 per 10kg, at the airport, reinstating baggage allowance would be around Php 300 (not sure) and excess baggage is Php 200 per kg (not updated). Then click CONTINUE.

Step 8. Reserve Seat. Now this is another payment which you can avoid actually. Airlines again put you in a default seat, which requires you to pay Php 130 (Cebu Pacific rate). Why pay for a seat when you already paid for your fare, right? Well, this is really if you want to choose the seat location (aisle, window, near doors, etc.). But when you check-in at the airport, you can request the check-in crew for an aisle or a window seat (they usually ask you, though).

Remove the reserve seat by pointing your mouse at the Seat portion (red circle), then the “remove seat” option will show. Then click the vague “remove seat” option (blue circle).

As I said, you ca also choose seats upon check-in at the airport. For other airlines, say AirAsia, there are usually two counters open for each flight. These counters are already assigned with “front (rows 1-15)” or “back (rows 16-31),” so you may ask first or you may request the crew. There is no harm in asking. However, recently, there is another option where there are self-service check-in kiosk where passengers check-in themselves. On how to operate this, just follow the instructions appearing on the touch screen. There are always staff around who are willing to help or since we Filipinos are helpful, you can ask around fellow passengers. At the kiosk, seats are randomly chosen, but there is an option to choose if you do not like the seat initially assigned randomly to you. It is better to come to the airport earlier so that more seat options will be available. Remember, at most airbus, seats A and F are window seats, B and E are middle, and C and D are aisle seats. Rows 15 and 16 will provide you a view of the wings so you might opt for Rows 1-5 and 25-31 to be near the doors and unobstructed views.

Step 9. Click Continue. Next stop is the Travel insurance option. As for me, if I am in a domestic flight, I do not usually purchase insurance. Normally, again, the airline has preselected the insurance option (another Php 325) but there is again a VAGUE option to remove this, just click the No Thanks (can you see it? Circled in red!).

Step 10. Click Continue after ticking that you have reviewed the booking summary. Reminder: it is in this part that you have to finally check everything: date, time, origin, destination, names of passengers.

Step 11. Payment processing. This is where you process payment whether via credit card, payment centers, travel fund, debit cards, etc.

See how we saved around Php 700 because we clicked the vague “no thanks” option for the baggage, seat and insurance? What if after having your itinerary, you suddenly realized that you needed those add-ons? Fret not, as you can still purchase seats, baggage, insurance and other add-ons through the “Manage Booking” option.

For other airlines, pretty much the same process is followed. Tip is just to read and have patience as this might cost you a few pesos. Have a safe trip and I hope you learned from this post.

Project 104: A Guide to Proper Saving

I am not broke, but not rich either. But I can say that I am financially free. I do not have debts, though I use my credit card, I use it to earn points and grab rewards. My friends say it is because I have a good paying job. But I have started this scheme six years ago, when I was still earning a mere Php 8000 in a month.

Since it is January, this is a good time to do this project. I call this Project 104 because most of us, has 104 paydays in a year. What I do is when it is the 15^th and 30^th of the month, I immediately deduct and transfer to another account 30% of my GROSS salary, set aside 10% for church and charity and the remaining 60%, less the statutory contributions, will be budgeted to be spent for the days until the next payday. List your savings, the more you glance at it and see that it is growing fast, you will be inspired to save more!

The first time I tried this, I thought it is impossible. But then, by doing this, you learn to budget and live within your means. Another helpful tip is that, I know when to buy things I need. For example, the cosmetics (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) , there is a brand I regularly. I seldom try new brands, and I have a list of the prices of each. On the day I open and use the product, I write the date so that I could monitor how long it will last and when is the payday that I would buy the next quantity. And for these consumable and non-perishable items, when they are on sale, I buy in bulk or in large quantities, as long as I can use it before it expires.

For clothes, it is all scheduled and planned. Since the industry I am working for provides us clothes from head to foot (except undergarments), I do not have any problem with clothing. This is also why I choose to work in this industry because of the so much freebies hehehe. I am also the white-shirt-and-jeans type of girl so my wardrobe really is inexpensive. I have a budget for one blouse per month and I buy a pair of Levi’s only every January when there is a clearance sale.

To keep track on my expenses, I list expense I made, so that I can analyze where I bought impulsively. Remember, do not buy what you do not need! Do not be pressured because the people around you are having so much. Do not be ashamed to say that you cannot afford and that you do not have the budget for the luxury someone is tempting you with. Share. I guess this is one of the reasons I am blessed financially (meaning I am not broke but not rich either). My brother would always tell me that my tithing is very effective. Share with an open heart and not just because you are forced to, are obliged or are expecting something in return. If there are opportunities for earning, do it. Sell cellphone loads, book airline tickets for a fee, do research for a fee, sell anything as long as it would not hinder with your time, you can also invest at the stock market and treat this as your retirement savings.

What I suggest to my friends who ask me is this formula:

Gross income – Tithe/Donations/Charity – Savings = Expenses

Believe me, it works!

When Sony Surprised Me

A few weeks ago, I have sent a letter to Sony telling about my horrible experience on my TX-5 camera. I also posted the letter to my blog, in my Facebook account and Twitter. I have asked friends to share the said post so that somehow it would reach Sony.

Being just an ordinary person, I never thought my letter would serve its purpose. A few days after I sent out the letter, Sony US acknowledged it but they cannot do anything about it, rather, they advised me on where to sent it. And then, after a week, Sony Philippines replied. I received a reply from costumer service acknowledging my letter and promising that they will assess the situation. I never expected any response then, as long as my letter reached them and that they already know my complaint.

Until a few days ago, Faye from Sony contacted me through phone. She apologized in behalf of Sony and promised me that she will handle the case and assured me of a positive response. The following day, I was in Bohol when she called me back and gave me a very good offer. Since the TX-5 is not anymore available in the market, they offered me TX-30 at a very low price! Since that is also the model I plan to buy on December, i immediately grabbed the offer.

Faye arranged everything and i was told to pick up the item at Sony Centre Glorietta. When I arrived at the store, the contact person was shocked why I was offered the camera at a very low price. They have to call Sony to clarify my claim. The store manager wanted to know the story and finally asked me what I have done to avail of such offer. I happily told him the horrible experience. He was delighted that Sony has done a positive response to my complaint.

Anyway, my new Sony TX-30, which I named Argy, because it is Silver in color, came with a pouch and an 8GB microSD card. I am very happy that Sony looks into the welfare and satisfaction of loyal customers. Thank you Sony Philippines! A Letter to SONY: A Horrible Experience

Dear SONY,

I previously have a Sony DSC W510 camera but when I learned about the water proof TX-5 model, I immediately sold my old one and planned to get TX-5. I plan to buy it in time for my trip to Boracay on July 2011. When I checked out the store, it was too expensive for me, so then I waited for a new camera model to be launched so that it’s price would go low. Fortunately, after almost a year, on 2011, I finally got my new TX-5 at Php 21,999, with a 3-year warranty, and right in time for my ultimate beach trip.

I was so happy and proud then. For a simple employee like me, at that time, it was a great accomplishment to buy such camera at such price. Because it is expensive, I really took care of it. I read the specs, learned how to use it correctly and specifically memorized its limitations.

The TX-5, as promoted by SONY, is a Water-proof at “up to 3m deep for up to 60 minutes,” Temperature-proof “even below freezing point up to –10ºC,” Dust-proof and Shock-proof which “allows drops of up to a height of 1.5m.” Pretty tough right?

I have brought this camera to numerous vacations, mostly beaches, since I am a beach bum, and enjoyed every moments captured by it. Until, one day when I was swimming in a pool.

Since I am alone in that trip, I brought with me my camera and took photos of myself. When I was at the pool, which is only 4 feet deep (because I can’t swim), I still got the camera with me. I was very confident since it is still safe at that depth. Until, when I raised it and took a photo of myself. After taking the photo, I looked at the LCD to check it out, and then a black screen surprised me. The camera did not turn on anymore. I immediately got out of the pool and went back to my room. I wiped the camera with dry cloth and used a blower at low range to dry it off. It became dry and the power turned on. But then no display was seen.

I immediately bought the camera to the local service center in our city. But then they advised me that it would be shipped to Manila and I have to wait for a few weeks for the feedback. Since I will be going to Manila, I decided to bring it myself to the main service center.

On September 21, 2013, I went to Solid Electronics Corporation, a Sony Authorized Service Centre located at #1172 EDSA Balintawak Quezon City to have my camera checked. I was issued SR No. J30024295 and was told to wait for a feedback after 5-7 days. The receptionist cannot answer why my Water-proof camera was damaged after it got wet. And to top it all, they have to void the warranty because of the same reason that the camera was damaged after being wet. Funny, right? So the camera can’t get wet even if it is water-proof? Just funny!

I have to pay Php 550 for the diagnostic fee, which I agreed upon and pay for labor cost and additional repair fee. I decided on myself that I would pay as high as Php 5,000 for the repair of this camera (which I have learned to love) than to buy a new one which is priced at Php 20,000.

And today, the service center called me and I got the surprise of my life when I was told that my camera was beyond repair because the inside part got wet, or if I pursue repair then I would have to pay around Php 68,000. I told her that I will just pay the diagnostic fee and will pick up my camera in 15 days time. When I told a friend about it, he suggested that maybe it was Php 6,000 to Php 8,000 (6 to 8 thousand) and not Php 68,000. The repair amount of Php 68,000 is just exorbitant for a camera I bought at Php 21,999. So to clarify, I called up the service center and asked again. And then the representative told me that it would cost Php 68,327 (not 6 to 8 thousand), to repair my waterproof camera which was damaged after it got wet and which I bought at Php 21,999.

Until now, upon writing this, everything is very vague to me. First, why would my TX-5 water proof camera be damaged after I used it in a 4-feet pool when it was not even submerged for more than a minute? Second, why would Sony void the 3-year warranty for a water-proof camera after it became wet? What is the point of it being water-proof? And lastly, why would the repair cost Php 68,327, which is more than three times the price I bought my TX-5?

I do not know where to address this situation. I will be sending this letter to Sony Philippines using their “contact us” section, I will post this on my blog and tweet the link to @SonyPHinc and @Sony and I will also publicly post this letter to my Facebook account, hoping that friends would share it until it will reach Sony. I want answers to my questions and a replacement for my water-proof camera which was damaged after being wet.

Oriental Mindoro -- Puerto Galera

I have always been curious of this place. A few years ago, this is very famous and still is now. Recently, I had a short vacation and want to go to a nearby beach without spending much. After browsing the net, I decided to go to the white beach of Puerto Galera. The transportation is pretty much simple and I can handle it by myself. My tagalog is improving already, so I am not anymore afraid to talk to other people to ask around.

I started my trip to Galera at 7:30 AM. I took the JAM bus liner from Cubao. The route should be the one with "Batangas Port," not the one passing Lipa City (this is the long way). Fare is Php 175. The bus has free wifi and free newspaper.

We arrived at Batangas Port around 10:30 AM. I followed the group of people who went inside the port. I am going to Terminal 3 (bound for Puerto Galera). I am pretty much surprised by my experience at the port (read it here).

The boat ride to Galera took a little more than an hour, contrary to what I have read at some blog posts that it would take more than two. When the boat is approaching the port at island, I was amazed by the view. It took away the disappointment I felt before at the Batangas port. Since we did not docked at the "White Island," where the resorts are, itself, the Shipping Lines provided a shuttle to bring us to the White Beach area where most of our accommodations are.

I was meet by several women urging me to stay in their hotel. I was a little annoyed because they will really persuade you. But that is their way of living. Firstly, I confirmed to the Minolo Shipping Booth, my departure for the next day, since I have purchased a round trip ticket.

I immediately checked in to the White Beach Resort and Hotel at which I reserved a room. The room is very simple and basic, still expensive at the price of Php 899 per night. Anyway, I put on my sunblock and swimwear and headed to the beach.

The sand/corals/pebbles made the shore white. But it is unlike Boracay (which I have thought before). What I like about this place is that you do not have to walk far to swim. The water becomes deep at one meter from the shore. The water is clear and calm. And the place is not to crowded so you can really relax and feel the beauty of the place. The next day, I visited the Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Island and a bay view something.

How to go:

From Cubao/Pasay ride a bus going to Batangas Port
At Batangas Port, look for the Minolo Shipping Lines Booth and purchase a round trip ticket (do not ask assistance for barkers - you can do this on your own). Purchase also the Environmental Fee of Php 50 and the terminal fee of Php 30
At the Puerto Galera Port, the shipping lines will provide a shuttle to bring you to White Beach
Follow the same route when go back to Batangas (terminal fee of Php 10 will be collected. But I did not see any terminal)

Puerto Galera -- Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Island and Bay View

The next day of my Puerto Galera escapade, I went to Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Island and certain Bayview area which I forgot the name. I have taken this package for Php 700, leaving white beach at 8:00 AM. Tip: I took the package from the ladies promoting at the beach. I realized later on that if I have talked to a tricycle driver and negotiate, I could have payed a lower price. The ladies at the beach are just so persuasive that you get tired and gave in (weak me!).

Anyway, I asked the driver to bring me to a carenderia along the road for my breakfast. I invited him but he refused to join me. I preffered to eat at the carenderia since it is cheaper. I ate for about 20 minutes and off we traveled to Tamaraw Falls. The trip took about 1 hour but the view is amazing.

I ask the driver to be my photographer :) I paid the Php 20 entrance fee and I went to the falls, passing below the bridge. The magnificent and it is beyond words to describe its beauty. I felt extra proud because I was able to go very near the falls. I did not swim though because I do not know how to swim (obviously) and it might not be safe for me.

After drinking my Buko juice, we went to the Virgin Island. I was surprised and disappointed as it is not really an island. It is just a private place with pebbles at the shore. There is also a Grotto of the Virgin Mary at the place. There, I swam and enjoyed the water. I spend almost one hour there with the trike driver waiting outside (para sulit naman bayad ko no!). Anyway, entrance fee here is Php 10 to be paid at the small store.

After that, I asked for the Bay view that was part of the package and voila! we stopped beside the road and that is the bay view! Mahal nga masyado ang 700 na binayad ko. Naloko na naman ako! Anyway, I took pictures and off we went back to White Beach. The hotel already cleaned my room and did not allow me anymore to use it. But they let me use the shower in their massage room. So I changed and then went to the booth where the shuttle back to the port will be parked. Goodbye Puerto Galera. Thank you.

Puerto Galera -- White Beach Resort and Hotel

As I was researching for my trip to Puerto Galera, this is the hotel that is the cheapest. Due to my experience at the Batangas Port, I called the "owner" of this hotel beforehand and was assured of a vacant room for Php 899. When I arrived at White Beach, I was met by several ladies promoting their hotels and never leaving you until you commit. Luckily I saw someone from White Beach Hotel and told her of my prior call to their boss. She accompanied me to my room and let me choose whether 1st, 2nd or 3rd floor. I choose the 2nd.

The room is very basic. It has one double bed and 1 single bed. It has a comfort room inside, a television (with no remote control), two towels and airconditioner.

Overall, I think that the accommodation in White Beach are expensive (with respect to the quality of rooms). Or maybe, I just did not discover the cheaper ones. Also the transportation (boat) is mahal. The boat and accommodation in Boracay are way cheaper.

Puerto Galera - What I Ate

I already had my breakfast at Manila, so I only have to think of my lunch and dinner for the day. Since I saw a Greenwich booth at the Batangas Port terminal, and since the boat I was to ride will depart at 12:30 PM, I took the last chance at fastfood and bought a chicken meal. Surprisingly, when I arrived at the island, the food is still warm!

After swimming at the clear beach, I sat at the sand and watched the beautiful sunset. While watching, I drink up my baon SanMig Apple (yes, I stash some liquor at my bag because I know it would cost a lot at the island). I ate Balut bought from the vendor and lounge at the seashore, feeling the sea air and looking at other tourists enjoying the peaceful place.

Anyway, that night, after a long lounge on the beach, I walk through the several restaurants at the beach front. I have already chosen a spot but when I asked if they had Tinolang Sugpo, they declined and so I walked away and searched for another place to eat. At the adjacent restaurant, I ask again for the food I craved for a week already. The attendant said none but then he will find a way and so he called, I guess, another restaurant and then promised me my Sugpo. I ordered additional grilled fish and two sticks of barbeque. When I finished ordering, I wondered if I can consume all that I have ordered.

Surprisingly, I do not know if I will be disappointed or not, the Tinola contained only three pieces of Sugpo! Well, it is just okay so that I can be sure to consume it. Luckily, with my big appetite, I consumed everything with a sip of my favorite strawberry shake. I paid Php 620 for my dinner and left Php 30 pesos as tip.

The tinolang sugpo that was specially ordered from other restaurant; This costs Php 300 and yes, with only 3 pieces of sugpo but very meaty!

It was still 8:00 PM so I burned down the calories by walking along the seashore and checking out the souvenir shops around. Like Boracay, souvenirs at Galera are quite cheap. I bought two beach dress, board shorts and a sarong. I paid a total of Php 500 for the souvenirs I bought.

I then continued walking and watched some firedancers. I got tired and the night became colder so I went back to my room and sleep, tomorrow is another day as I will visit Tamaraw Falls.

Batangas Port – On My Way to Pueto Galera

Okay, so it has been a long time since I have written in this blog. I stopped writing but I continue going to different places in our country. Anyway, as I decided to write again, I will start with my latest travel to Puerto Galera in the province of Oriental Mindoro.

People close to me really know how much I love the water (well, now you know too!). That is why when I travel, I get over excited when a beach, a pool or any bodies of water is the destination. Since I am in Manila and I have no planned trip, I just decided to go to Puerto Galera. I have heard and read so much about the place that it made me curious to visit it. Some say it is like Boracay with the white sand and parties at the beach. I researched and planned my trip. I allotted Php 3000 budget for an overnight stay at the beachfront.

I left Manila and rode the JAM bus to Batangas at around 7am. It arrived at Batangas Port around 10am.

At the Batangas Port, I think I looked pretty lost and ignorant (duh!), a man approached me and discussed to me options in going to Galera. Damn, really I do not like these people, sometimes I feel harassed. But anyway, since he showed me a phamplet of the Minolo Shipping Lines’ schedule (I opted to ride this boat due to reviews and blogs I read that this shipping line is the safest), I entertained him. He accompanied and guided me to the Minolo Lines ticket booth. He said that it is Php 500 for a round trip ticket to White Beach plus Php 50 Environmental Fee and Php 30 Terminal Fee. I give him my money (big mistake! Do not give your money to a strager!!!). After I handed him the money, I immediately realized how tanga I am to give money to a total stranger. So I just followed him with my eyes, from the Minolo booth to the Envi booth to the Terminal fee booth. Good thing he did not ran with my money J Anyway, I should suggest that these booths should be beside each other (just like in Boracay) so that passengers will not be confused and walked afar.

When I entered the terminal, he said to me: “Ikaw na po bahala sa akin, Ma’am.” The F! Naloko na naman ako ng mga kapwa Pilipino! I never really like the force-tip-unwritten-policy in our country. Nakakawalang gana magbigay. And I thought he is an employee of the tourism industry of the place or the shipping lines trying to help passengers. Anyway, I give him Php 50 and he politely thank me.

The terminal is quite decent and clean. There were food stalls and seats inside where passengers can rest while waiting for the boat. My boat to White Island is due to depart at 12:30 PM.

As I search for departure gate, I was again greeted and approached by several ladies asking me if I already had a hotel to stay at the beach. I know their tactics so I said yes and they ask me many questions until they found out I did not reserved any room (I am not a good liar). They promoted their rooms saying that it is the cheapest and that if you book with them someone will welcome you at the beach and with all the flowery words. One offered me a room for Php 1500 with breakfast. Another told me not to get a room with breakfast since food is cheap at the island. They showed me pictures at their iPad and I said that I will think about it and will just approach them when I decided. They do that tactic to all tourist-looking people arriving at the terminal.

Every 5 minutes, someone from their group would come to me and offer me another room with a lower price, they really use several strategy so that you would gave in. The Php 1500 room even went as low as Php 1000! Imagine that! Ang laki ng commission nila kung kumuha ako kanina. I even told one woman na “Baka naman pagdating ko dun, ang mura naman pala ng mga hotel dun (which I know because I have done my research)” and the B lied saying that theirs is the lowest rate! So I called the resort at Galera and asked if they have vacant rooms and how much. Well, I got a room for Php 899! Goodbye ladies at the terminal.

NOTE: Do not be deceived by their business talks and pictures because you can get even lower priced rooms as a walk-in guest at the resort itself.

I almost regret going to Galera but then after I reserved a room, I refreshed my thoughts and just decided to be positive on this trip. Good thing I heard that my boat is due to depart and my excitement to see Galera changed my mood to a more positive one.

Benguet -- La Trinidad -- Strawberry Farm

Baguio has become one of my favorite city in the country. I just love its cool weather and the very good people living here, not to mention the honest taxi drivers and the cheap taxi rates. It has been my dream to spend the cool month of December in this city. And so my wish did come true when I had some vacation leave from my work which I need to consume before the year ends.

I have been to most of Baguio's tourist spots. So this time, I will visit the famous strawberry farms. I thought before, you need to travel far to reach this place as it is already outside the city. Good thing I learned from a friend that you could actually ride a taxi to the farm! I rode a taxi and asked the driver to bring me to La Trinidad's strawberry fields. And I was surprised yet again that I only payed around Php 150 for the one way trip.

I was amazed as again, there are so many people in the place! I have thought that since it is away from the city, and not during summer, there would be few people enjoying the place.

The farm is a large field planted with strawberries. Each plot, I guess, has a different owner. It is free to go inside and tour the field. If you decide to pick your own strawberries, you can do so but you have to pay Php 400 per kilogram, much more expensive than the ones you did not pick. I ask the farmer why do we have to pay much, that they should be the one paying us because we reduced their work. But she answered me that we are paying for the rare experience of picking strawberries. Of course, as frugal as I am, I let go of the said experience and just took pictures of people enjoying the "pick-up."

After roaming around and appreciating the beauty of the farm, I went outside to check out the souvenir shoppes. An ice cream vendor caught my attention and he sold me some strawberry ice cream! Even if I am not a fan of ice cream myself, I did not let go of the chance and tasted the ever so yummy strawberry flavored dirty ice cream! Naimas! At Php20, it is worth up to the last drop!

After some picture taking while eating the ice cream, thanks to the friendly vendor, I shopped around for some souvenirs and pasalubongs. Souvenirs in Baguio are not expensive, but a tip, buy them at the central market at the city and the price would even go lower!

I went back to Baguio City by commuting, riding in a jeep that is bound for the city proper. And then I walked back to the hotel, passing through several fruit stands and food stalls. Ah the fruits are so cheap and of good quality! I will always come back to this place.

Benguet -- Baguio City -- Bit By Macky the Monkey

This news brought mixed reactions from my family and friends. Afterall, it is rare to be bit by a monkey.

It was our second day in Baguio and as planned, we went to the Philippine Military Academy. It was Sunday and many tourists were also visiting the area. The taxi dropped us off near a souvenir shop. And since we do not know where to go first at the area, we checked out the shop first.

I saw the monkey and thought that it is a pet of the shop owner. The monkey is eating a piece of biscuit which it held with its two hands. When I stepped forward to look at a certain item, in a flash, the monkey attacked my left leg and somewhat hugged me. My first reaction was, in a frightened voice, "Oi, niyakap nya legs ko." That is when the storekeeper "shoo" it away.

After a few minutes, I felt pain in in my leg, I immediately pulled my pants up and looked at the source of the pain, and was surprised to see blood. It did not occur to me that I was bit, I really thought that I was just scratched since I really saw that the monkey hugged my leg. Anyway, my friends were alarmed and by the instructions given by the storekeeper, we immediately went to the hospital to be checked.

When I was interviewed by the medical staff about my case, laughter and smiles were always part of their reaction when I told them that a monkey was to be blamed. The doctor examined me and looked at the wound. By the shape of it he concluded that it was indeed a bite. They gave me an anti-tetanus shot and I was advised to go to San Lazaro Hospital in Manila for the series of anti-rabies vaccine.

Later did I know that Macky the Monkey also bit another person two weeks before. They say that Macky is astray but then fed by other inhabitants in the area. So I can't really demand for the "owner" to pay for my medical bills, since there is no "real owner." So overall, when I am asked how much I spent on my first trip to Baguio, I would say around Php15,000 since I have spent so much on the series of vaccines that I have to undergo inorder to be safe.

Though hurt and worried, I am thankful for my friends and the staff at the PMA hospital and San Lazaro Hospital for taking care of me. Of course, a little wound did not stop me from exploring the rest of the academy and the rest of the beautiful city of Baguio. Until now, my niece would tell me not to go back to the city because Macky might be waiting to bite me.

Personal -- My Travel Essentials

When there are spontaneous trips and I am to be asked if how long will it take me to pack, I would excitedly answer: "I am always packed!" Below are the things that are always ready for pick up and be put into my back pack.

Map

I always see to it that I bring a map of the place that I will go to. Sometimes, I buy the map on the place itself or I will avail maps and pamphlets at the airport of my destination.

Toiletries

I already set aside a set of toiletries in this mesh bag. I just grab it whenever I get to travel. This contains sachets of conditioner and shampoo, a small bar of soap, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial wash, facial cream, deodorant, panty liners, feminine wash and shave. Some hotels provide soap and shampoo though. But if you plan to stay on a budget type accommodation, toiletries are not usually included.

Camera

Who would forget this gadget? We all want to capture the important moments and beautiful scenes in the place! As I am not a professional photographer, I use a simple point and shoot camera. The Sony TX-5 has great features: handy, waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof. If you travel solo, try to bring a small tripod so that you can take a picture of yourself too.

Shades and Sunblock

Protect your eyes and skin from the sun. Sunburn can really be annoying.

Sarong

I have had this sarong for almost ten years already! Given to me by a close friend during my college years. This is very handy and multipurpose. You can use this as towel, scarf, mat, cover up and in so many more ways if you are just innovative.

Coffee and Cup Noodles
A sachet of 3in1 coffee can easily be inserted in any pockets without requiring too much space. Cup noodles on the other hand occupy a bit of space. But believe me, when you are on a tight budget, bringing these two is a great help. The space occupied by the cup noodles will be additional space for souvenirs when you come back.

Flashlight
I have a pink pocket flashlight. And then recently I realized to buy a whistle, these two are very useful in times of emergencies.

Things listed here are my travel essentials, those that are always present whenever I travel. Some items can be bought on your destination and some are available on the accommodations. How about you? Manila -- Fort Santiago

I have visited Metro Manila several times and have even stayed for a month but have not really explored the place. One reason is that I am so coward to try to commute and another is that I am simply afraid to be mugged. Being a girl from the province, I have seen Manila as a fast-paced environment, which I could not keep up.

On my latest visit to the Metro, I have a vacant afternoon so I called my cousin to accompany me to walk around the city or at least visit one tourist spot. I warned him that we should commute all the way and not ride a taxi so that I can master my way around.

After my business at the Bureau of Immigration, we decided to go to Intramuros, after all, we were already in the vicinity. Fort Santiago is located at the northern part of Intramuros. It is open daily at 8:00 AM. It is said to be one of the oldest Hispanic stone fortresses in the country. We payed the entrance fee of Php 75 and started to walk around. Fortunately, my cousin is taking up his Masters Degree in UP and part of their requirements is an educational tour in Fort Santiago. So, I am quite lucky of having my own tour guide discussing to me the history of the place and things we passed by.

Upon entry, you will first pass the Baluartillo de San Francisco Javier. This is said to be built on 1663. There are several rooms here. One is the Intramuros Visitors Center. It is like the Tourism Office where you can get maps and pamphlets about the place. There is also the museum that housed several old findings in the place. We took several minutes in the audio visual room where we watch a short video presentation about the history of Fort Santiago and Intramuros. Also located in this strip are the souvenir and coffee shops.

Along the way, I was amazed to see several old canyons and an anchor. There was also the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This is a chapel constructed in 1773. This place is also great for family and barkada since there are spots for picnic. Since we visited the place on a weekday, only few people were there. But I could see some foreigners in the place so I am quite proud that this place too has attracted some non-Filipinos. Anyway, during weekends, more people tour the place especially those students who are having an educational tour.

I especially enjoyed going inside the Rizal Shrine. Displayed here were Rizal's things, works and other mementoes. It is also the room were the National Hero was confined during his trial for sedition. Literary works of Rizal were displayed in large sizes. I was a bit disappointed though because I observed that there were no surveillance cameras inside so visitors can do harm to the historical things if they want to.

Visiting Fort Santiago brings you back to the Spanish Era. You see the things that were only mentioned in books. And when you see the fortress from the top, you will imagine what it was like during the time of our forefathers. I imagined it was tough to be a Filipino then. And then I wished I have listed and internalized the lessons in Philippine history when I was in college.

Of course, I did not take notes while touring around Fort Santiago. So, in order to write the right information here, I also consulted the maps and pamphlets I got from the Intramuros Visitors Center.
I am not able to provide the "how to go" part since I still think that transpo in Manila is complicated and I am not so familiar with it. But in this trip, we mostly walk. :)

I let her go and travel to places where she can relax and unwind. I let her experience things she was not able to experience before because of poverty and so that she can give more to her kids. Seeing the goodness of my mother makes me afraid of becoming a mother myself because I think I can not level the good heart that she and all moms out there have.

Iligan City -- Mimbalot Falls

I recently reformatted my phone and while I browsed the files to be transferred to my hard drive, I came across the photos I have while visiting another falls in Iligan City. Aside from Ma. Cristina Falls and Tinago Falls, Iligan also has another majestic waterfall located in Barangay Buru-un, Mimbalot Falls.

Mimbalot Falls is not so famous yet. I think only the locals know of the place. I have been living in Iligan for more than four years and just learned about the said falls. Anyway, this falls is accessible to the public. I went there with my cousin and we easily arrived at the place using public transportation. It was a spur of the moment decision so we were not dressed properly, meaning, I wore shoes and brought no change of clothes, thus we were not able to swim.

We were alone when we arrive at the falls. I felt a bit creepy at first but then after 20 minutes, another group of visitors arrived and they got to swim! Anyway, when going there, you can bring your own food as there are table and chairs available. You can eat while swimming but be sure not to leave your wastes and garbage.

I can't get enough of the beautiful place

Visiting Mimbalot Falls brings you up close to nature. You can hear the water fall and can even swim very near it. Iligan City is truly the city of majestic waterfalls.

How to go:

From any point in Cagayan de Oro City, ride a taxi or any Bulua jeepney to bring you to Bulua Bus Terminal.
Choose any bus that says "Iligan"
From Iligan Bus Terminal, ride any jeepney going to "syudad." Or you can ride a taxi. Ask the driver to drop you off near Jollibee main branch where there is a jeepney going to Buru-un.
Request the driver to drop you off at the Iligan City School of Fisheries. There is a road beside the school that will lead you to the falls.

I have been hearing about Malagos Garden Resort for quite some time already. However, while I was living in Davao for two years, I was not able to drop by this place. Malagos is located at Calinan, Davao City. It is located a mere hour drive from downtown. It can be reached by a private vehicle or a public transportation.

Recently, I have a business transaction in Calinan area. Being a wanderlust, I see to it that I incorporated a side trip during this time. When I researched the place, I was excited that a garden resort is in the area. From Calinan proper, there are several habal habal for hire. You just have to ask around and people are more than willing to assist you. I was charged Php 30 from the highway to Malagos.

Upon arrival, I was impressed by the resort's reception area. It was full of antiques and art works. The day tour costs me Php 100. There are also packages with lunch or with snacks. I went there on a weekday so there were no or few people around. I was starting to ask myself if the place is still on business. The front desk personnel is not very accommodating. I thought I was to be accompanied by a guide or something. After all, there are animals and plants in the area that could be stolen or played at. Realizing that I have to tour the place on my own, I ask for a map, which is not so clear but otherwise useful.

During that time, there are no things really worth the payment. The name speaks for itself. Garden. So many plants. There is a butterfly sanctuary but I only saw few butterflies. There were few animals. I saw horses, an ostrich in an open fence, several chickens, guinea pigs, hamsters and others that I perhaps missed. I was already discouraged and I started to regret paying Php 100 for things I can see in other places in a much lesser amount.

Still wandering the place, I came across a dome and heard chirping of birds, I was excited! The gate is ajar and I saw a man inside. I ask if I could go in and he simply said yes. There, I saw the worth of what I paid. I have already said several times that I am not an animal person but I was so amazed by the different kinds of birds that I saw. They were colorful and playful! You can almost touch them and they even played for the camera. Its as if they know pictures were taken and they will pose.

I enjoyed this part of the tour. I took several photos (of course no flash as this will upset them). I spent more than 30 minutes inside the bird dome. Too bad there were no descriptions of the bird there. Most are free to fly inside the dome while others, I guess the unique or dangerous ones are put in a cage.

The habal habal driver said that more people are visiting on weekends when there are shows. According to the brochure, there are also several activities in the area. You can do zipline, trampoline and horseback riding. There is also a restaurant, a pool and a playground. Several rooms and huts are also available for overnight guests. Maybe I did not feel welcome when I was there, but hey, the birds did welcome me with their colors and playfulness!

How to go:

From the Bankerohan terminal, ride a van going to Calinan
At the terminal in Calinan, look around for single motorcycles for hire or habal habal (Php 30 per head)
Ask the driver to bring you to Malagos
After Malagos, you can also go to the Philippine Eagle farm, (I was not able to go since it was going to rain)
Going home, take the same route, single motorcycles can be found anywhere
