Here are the most common codes and messages you're likely to see on your Web browser (HTTP), when accessing Usenet, using e-mail, or using the FTP protocol to upload or download files.

The codes can generally by grouped as follows -

100-199 - Information Codes. Provide information about the request or the servers involved.

200-299 - Success Codes. Indicate that the request was accepted or the requested file has no content (empty).

300-399 - Redirects. Requested content has moved.

400-499 - Client Errors. Cannot find content or you don't have the correct permissions to access it.

500-599 - Server Errors. There is a problem at the server end stopping the request from completing successfully.

To give you a greater understanding of these errors, here is a list of the most popular codes.

As a rule of thumb, the first thing you should if you get an error is make sure that you have typed in the URL or page address correctly.

Read on........

Bad request 400
The request could not be understood by the server due to bad syntax. You should not repeat the request without modifications.

Unauthorized 401
The creators of a Web page may want only certain people have access to that page. You should only retry the request if you know that you have authorization.

PaymentRequired 402
This message gives a specification of charging schemes which are acceptable. You may retry the request with a suitable ChargeTo header.

Forbidden 403
The request is for something forbidden. Authorization will not help. This status code is commonly used when the server does not wish to reveal exactly why the request has been refused, or when no other response is applicable. (The file needs to be set with "read permissions" for all users.)

Not found 404
The server has not found anything matching what you requested. Make sure that the Web address (URL) that you typed in exactly matches the address you were given. Check that the capitalization matches, spelling, and punctuation, like dots (.) and slashes (/), are correctly placed. Be sure you are using the forward slash (/) and not the backward slash (\).

405 Method Not Allowed
The method specified in the Request-Line is not allowed for the resource identified by the request. The response must include an Allow header containing a list of valid methods for the requested resource.

406 Not Acceptable
The resource identified by the request is only capable of generating response entities which have content characteristics not acceptable according to the accept headers sent in the request.

407 Proxy Authentication Required
This code is similar to 401 (Unauthorized) , but indicates that you must first authenticate yourself with the proxy. The proxy must return a Proxy-Authenticate header field (section 14.33) containing a challenge applicable to the proxy for the requested resource. You may repeat the request with a suitable Proxy-Authorization header field (section 14.34). HTTP access authentication is explained in section 11.

408 Request Timeout
The client did not produce a request within the time that the server was prepared to wait. You may repeat the request without modifications at any later time.

409 Conflict
The request could not be completed due to a conflict with the current state of the resource. This code is only allowed in situations where it is expected that the user might be able to resolve the conflict and resubmit the request.

410 Gone
The 410 response is primarily intended to assist the task of web maintenance by notifying the recipient that the resource is intentionally unavailable and that the server owners want remote links to that resource be removed.

411 Length Required
The server refuses to accept the request without a defined Content- Length. The client may repeat the request if it adds a valid Content-Length header field containing the length of the message-body in the request message.

412 Precondition Failed
The precondition given in one or more of the request-header fields evaluated to false when it was tested on the server. This response code allows the client to place preconditions on the current resource metainformation (header field data) and thus prevent the requested method from being applied to a resource other than the one intended.

413 Request Entity Too Large
The server is refusing to process a request because the request entity is larger than the server is willing or able to process. The server may close the connection to prevent the client from continuing the request.

414 Request-URI Too Long
The server is refusing to service the request because the Request-URI is longer than the server is willing to interpret.

415 Unsupported Media Type
The server is refusing to service the request because the entity of the request is in a format not supported by the requested resource for the requested method.

Internal Error 500
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. Your request could not be processed due to an internal server error.

Not implemented 501 The server does not support the functionality required to fulfill the request. This is the appropriate response when the server does not recognize the request method and is not capable of supporting it for any resource.

502 Bad Gateway
The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, received an invalid response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to fulfill the request.

503 Service Unavailable
The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. If known, the length of the delay may be indicated in a Retry-After header. If no Retry-After is given, you should handle the response as it would for a 500 response.

504 Gateway Timeout
The server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from the upstream server it accessed in attempting to complete the request.

505 HTTP Version Not Supported
The server does not support, or refuses to support, the HTTP protocol version that was used in the request message. The response should contain an entity describing why that version is not supported and what other protocols are supported by that server.

Read On To Know More........

Turn Off Error Reporting

When Windows XP crashes or hits a snag, it usually displays an error message
and asks for permission to report the problem to Microsoft via the Internet. To
prevent these messages from bothering you, turn off the error-reporting feature:
1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
2. Select Properties.
3. A window opens. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Click the Error Reporting button located in the lower-right corner of
this window.
5. Select the option to Disable Error Reporting. If you still want to be
notified when serious errors occur, then put a checkmark in the But
Notify Me When Critical Errors Occur box. If you want to disable all
types of error reporting so that you never see any error messages, then
remove the checkmark from this box.

Stop Highlighting New Software

Whenever you install new software, its name will automatically become high
lighted in your Start menu’s list of programs. The purpose of doing this is to
help you quickly find your new software in case you need to configure it. If
find this highlighting to be annoying, you can easily turn it off as follows:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click the Control Panel. (
3. If the Control Panel is in category view, click the Appearance and
Themes category, and then click the Taskbar and Start Menu icon.
4. A window opens. Click the Start Menu tab.
5. Click the Customize button.
6. Another window opens. Click the Advanced tab.
7. Under the Start Menu Settings heading, remove the checkmark from
the Highlight Newly Installed Programs box.
8. Click the OK button.
9. You are returned to the previous window. Click the Apply button.
0. Click the OK button.

Change the Windows Registration Name

If you bought a previously owned computer, there is a good chance that Windows still says it is registered to its former owner. To remove that name and insert your own, you must edit the Windows Registry:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click Run.
3. A window will appear.Type regedit in the blank, and then click the
OK button or press the Enter key.
4. The Windows Registry Editor opens. In the left window pane, double-
click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key.
5. A new column of registry keys appears. Double-click Software.
6. A long column of registry keys will appear. Scroll down until you fi
Microsoft, and then double-click it.
7. Another long list of registry keys appears. Scroll down and double-
click Windows NT.
8. Click the CurrentVersion registry key.
9. In the right window pane, double-click the RegisteredOwner regist
value
10. A window opens. Under the Value Data heading is the name of the
previous owner. Delete it, and then type your name in the blank.
11. Click the OK button.
12. Above RegisteredOwner, double-click the registry value named
RegisteredOrganization
13. Under the Value Data heading is the name of the previous owner’s
employer or organization. Delete it, and then type the name of your
organization (or you can just leave it blank if you want).
14. Click the OK button.
15. Exit the Registry Editor by clicking the X button in the upper-right
corner.

Edit a Song’s Tag

An ID3 tag is a list attached to a digital song that displays the singer’s name, the title of the song and the album, and more.A great feature of Windows XP is its native support for tags, which enables you to edit them without using additional software. Here’s how:
1. Locate a digital song you want to edit, such as an MP3 or WMA.
2. Right-click it and select Properties.
3. A window opens. Click the Summary tab.
4. If the center of the window displays four categories named Music,
Description, Origin, and Audio, proceed to Step 5. If these categories
are not available, then make them appear by clicking the Advanced
button located on the right side of the window. On top of the four categories are Property and Value columns. Underthe Property column are Artist,Album Title,Year, and so forth
5. Underneath the Value column, there are numerous blank spaces. To
fill in these blanks with information that identifies the name of the
musician, the title of the album, the year the album was made, and so
forth, simply click one of the blanks and type the relevant data.
6. When you finish editing the tag, click the Apply button.
7. Exit the tag by clicking the OK button.

Adjust Virtual Memory

When Windows is under a heavy strain, it sometimes needs more system memory (RAM) than your computer currently has. In that case, it seeks help from a Digital warehouse called Virtual Memory. No matter how little or how much RAM your computer has, you can adjust the settings of your Virtual Memory to ensure optimal performance. Here’s how:
1. Right-click the My Computer icon on your desktop. If this icon is not
available, click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows
and right-click My Computer.
2. Select Properties.
3. A window opens. Under the General tab, look for Computer. Beneath
it, you should see the name of your CPU as well as your total amount
of system RAM. Remember this number.
4. In the same window, click the Advanced tab.
5. Under the Performance heading, click the Settings button.
6. Another window opens. Click the Advanced tab.
7. Under the Virtual Memory heading, click the Change button.
8. A new window opens. Click the Custom Size button.
9. In the Initial Size (MB) and Maximum Size (MB)boxes, type a num-
ber based on the following formula:
• If your computer has 128 MB of RAM, use 256 as the Initial Size
and 512 as the Maximum Size.
• If your computer has 256 MB of RAM, use 384 as the Initial Size
and 768 as the Maximum Size.
• If your computer has 512 MB of RAM, use 768 as the Initial Size
and 1536 as the Maximum Size.
10. When you are finished adjusting the virtual memory, make your
changes take hold by clicking the Set button.
11. Click the OK button.
12. You are returned to the previous window. Click the OK button.

Disable Unneeded Services

Another way to reduce the strain on an aging computer is to disable some non-essential Windows services. Follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click the Control Panel. (If you don’t see this option, your Start menu
is in classic mode. In that case, click Settings, and then select the
Control Panel.)
3. If the Control Panel is in category view, click the Performance and
Maintenance category, and then click the Administrative Tools icon. If
the Control Panel is in classic view, simply double-click the
Administrative Tools icon.
4. Double-click the Services icon.
5. A window opens. Using the scroll bar, scroll down until you see
Alerter, and then double-click it.
6. Another window opens. Click the Startup Type drop-down menu, and
then select Disabled 7. Click the Apply button.
8. Click the OK button.
9. Return to the Services window and repeat the previous steps to dis-
able the following services:
• IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service:This service controls the
basic, no-frills CD-burning program built into Windows XP. If
you currently use a separate CD-burning program like Nero
Burning ROM, Easy Media Creator, or NTI CD-Maker, then
you can disable the IMAPI service. Doing so should not affect
your burning program, and might even make it faster. However, if
problems arise, then simply return to this window and re-enable
IMAPI.
• Indexing Service
• MS Software Shadow Copy Provider: If you have the
Professional Edition of Windows XP and want to use its internal
Backup program, then do not disable this service. Otherwise, this
service is unnecessary.
• Volume Shadow Copy: If you have the Professional Edition of
Windows XP and want to use its internal backup program, then
do not disable this service. Otherwise, this service is unnecessary.

Start Windows Faster

One of the best ways to help your computer start more quickly is to reduce the number of programs that are loaded while Windows is “waking up.”To tweak the startup, you must use a utility called msconfig, as follows:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click Run.
3. A window opens.Type msconfig in the blank, and then click the OK
button or press the Enter key.
4. The System Configuration Utility window opens. Click the Startup
tab on the far right.
5. In the Startup Item column on the left is a list of programs with
checkmarks next to them.A checkmark indicates
that the program is scheduled to launch each time Windows starts. To
prevent a program from loading at startup, remove the checkmark
from its box. Here are guidelines about which programs to allow or to
disable:
• Disable non-essential multimedia programs like qttask (which is
part of the QuickTime software), realsched (which is part of the
RealPlayer software), or Adobe Reader.
• Allow common processes for Windows and Microsoft Office.
• Allow programs related to your antivirus software, antispyware
software, or firewall. For example, if you use the ZoneAlarm fire-
wall and Spy Sweeper antispyware program, then you should
allow the startup programs named zlclient and SpySweeper.
• Allow programs related to your printer. For example, if you have
an Epson printer, then allow the startup program named Epson
Status Monitor.
6. If you are uncertain about whether or not to disable a particular
program, do the following:
a. Write the program’s name on a piece of paper.
b. Connect to the Internet.
c. In your Web browser, type http://www.processlibrary.com to
visit the Process Library.
d. Near the top of this website’s main page is a Search for a Process
search box.Type the name of your program into this box, and
then click the Search Now button.
You are taken to a Web page that explains what your program is
used for and whether or not it is essential to your computer’s
performance.
7. When you have finished tweaking the System Configuration Utility,
click the Apply button.
8. Click the OK button.
9. A message alerts you that you must restart your computer for the
changes to take effect. Click the Restart button.Your computer auto-
matically shuts down and reboots.
10. When you return to Windows, a message alerts you that you have just
used the System Configuration Utility to change the way Windows
starts. Put a checkmark in the box labeled “Don’t show this message
or launch the system configuration utility when Windows starts.”
11. Click the OK button.

Internet Explorer Shortcuts

Alt + left -- arrow Returns to the previous Web page
Alt + right arrow -- Moves forward one Web page
Ctrl + N -- Opens a new browser window
Ctrl + P -- Prints the current Web page
Ctrl + Enter -- Fills in a Web address.For example,if you type
THINKDIGIT in the address bar then press Ctrl +
Enter
Esc -- Halts the current Web page from loading
F5 -- Refreshes the current Web page
F11 -- Displays a Web page in full-screen mode.To exit this
mode,press F11 again.
Spacebar -- Moves down one Web page at a time
Spacebar + Shift -- Moves up one Web page at a time

Edit the Send To Menu

Windows XP has a time-saving technique that enables you to right-click a file,
select Send To, By default , Windows XP only has a few pro-grams listed in the Send To menu, but you can easily add more and customize this menu to your liking. Follow these steps:
1. Locate a folder or program you frequently use, and then create a
desktop shortcut to it.
2. Right-click the shortcut you just created, and then select Cut.
3. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
4. A window opens. Double-click the icon for your C: drive (unless you
installed Windows in a different location, in which case you would
double-click that drive letter).
5. Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
6. Double-click the folder containing the name of your Windows
account. For example, if your account is named CLMLBX , then double-
click the CLMLBX folder.
7. Inside your Windows account folder, click the Tools drop-down menu.
8. Select Folder Options.
9. A window opens. Click the View tab.
10. Under the Advanced Settings heading, scroll down and click the Show
Hidden Files and Folders button.
11. Click the Apply button.
12. Click the OK button.
13. Back inside your Windows account folder, several hidden folders
appear. Double-click the SendTo folder.
14. Inside the SendTo folder, right-click in the empty space and select
Paste.Your new desktop shortcut appears.
15. If necessary, repeat this process to paste more shortcuts in the SendTo
folder.
16. Click the Tools drop-down menu.
17. Select Folder Options.
18. A window opens. Click the View tab.
19. Under the Advanced Settings heading, scroll down and click the Do
Not Show Hidden Files and Folders button.
20. Click the Apply button.
21. Click the OK button.
22. Exit the SendTo folder by clicking the X button in the upper-right
corner.
23. From now on, whenever you right-click a file or folder and select Send
To, you will have the option to send a copy of it to one of the loca-
tions you added.

Manually Update Windows XP

To protect your computer from sinister digital threats like
viruses, worms, spyware, and hackers, you must keep Window
updated with the most recent security patches and service packs. If you have not enabled the automatic-update feature oF Windows XP, then you will have to download the patches Manually. Follow these steps:
1. Connect to the Internet.
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. In the address box, type: http://windowsupdate
.microsoft.com (but do not type www in this Web
address).
4. After arriving at the Windows Update website, you
might be asked to install a small program that will
help the site “talk” to your computer. Depending on
your version of Windows, click the Yes button or click
the Install button. When this process is finished, the
main page of the Windows Update site appears.
5. Depending on your version of Windows, click the
Express button or the Express Install button

6. The Windows Update website scans your computer to determine
which security patches are missing. When the scan is finished, follow
the on-screen instructions to download and automatically install the
updates. It is recommended that you begin by downloading the service
packs, which are critical collections of various patches and fixes.

Note

Not all security patches, updates, or service packs can be downloaded at the same time. You may need to return to the Windows Update website several times to
retrieve all of them.
7. Once the updates are installed, it is likely that you are asked to restart
your computer.
8. After your computer reboots, return to the Windows Update website
as many times as necessary until all possible security patches and serv-
ice packs are downloaded and installed.

Disable the List of Recent Documents

Even if you followed the steps to hide the Recent Documents list,Windows XP
continues to monitor the files you open or use and stores this information in the background just in case you need it.If you want to prevent Windows from keeping track of your recent documents, you must edit the Windows Registry,as follows:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click Run.
3. A window opens.Type regedit in the blank, and then click the OK
button or press the Enter key.
4. The Windows Registry Editor opens. In the left window pane, double-
click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry key.
5. A new column of registry keys appears. Double-click Software.
6. Another list of registry keys appears. Scroll down and double-click
Microsoft.
7. A long column of registry keys appears. Scroll down and double-click
Windows.
8. Double-click the CurrentVersion registry key.
9. A new column of registry keys appears. Scroll down and double-click
Policies.
10. Click the Explorer registry key
11. Click the Edit drop-down menu located in the upper-left corner of the
Windows Registry Editor.
12. Select New.
13. Select DWORD Value.
14. In the right window pane, a new registry value appears. Rename it
NoRecentDocsHistory
15. Double-click new NoRecentDocsHistory value to open it.
16. Type the number 1 under the Value Data heading.
17. Click the OK button.
18. Exit the Registry Editor by clicking the X button in the upper-right
corner.
19. If you want to undo this fix and restore the list of recent documents,
do the following:
a. Open the Windows Registry Editor and return to the
NoRecentDocsHistory registry value you created.
b. Double-click this registry value to open it.
c. Under the Value Data heading labeled, delete the number 1.
Type the number 0 in its place.

Hide the List of Recent Documents

Each time you open a document or file,Windows creates a shortcut to it that is placed in a list called Recent Documents. The purpose of this list is to give you a simple way to access your recently viewed documents without having to waste time searching for them. However, there is a downside: anyone who uses your computer—or hacks into it—can view this list to find out what documents you recently opened. To enhance your privacy and security, you can hide the Recent Documents list. Follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner of Windows.
2. Click the Control Panel.
3. If the Control Panel is in category view, click the Appearance and
Themes category, and then click the Taskbar and Start Menu icon. If
the Control Panel is in classic view, simply double-click the Taskbar
and Start Menu icon.
4. A window opens. Click the Start Menu tab.
5. Click the Customize button.
6. Another window opens. Click the Advanced tab.
7. Remove the checkmark from the List My Most Recently Opened
Documents box.
8. Click the Clear List button.
9. Click the OK button.
10. You are returned to the previous window. Click the Apply button.
11. Click the OK button.

But tweak the right settings and you could make it faster still, more than doubling your speed in some situations, all for about five minutes work and for the cost of precisely nothing at all. Here's what you need to do.

1. Enable pipelining

Browsers are normally very polite, sending a request to a server then waiting for a response before continuing. Pipelining is a more aggressive technique that lets them send multiple requests before any responses are received, often reducing page download times. To enable it, type about:config in the address bar, double-click network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining so their values are set to true, then double-click network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set this to 8.

Keep in mind that some servers don't support pipelining, though, and if you regularly visit a lot of these then the tweak can actually reduce performance. Set network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining to false again if you have any problems.

2. Render quickly

Large, complex web pages can take a while to download. Firefox doesn't want to keep you waiting, so by default will display what it's received so far every 0.12 seconds (the "content notify interval"). While this helps the browser feel snappy, frequent redraws increase the total page load time, so a longer content notify interval will improve performance.

Type about:config and press [Enter], then right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) somewhere in the window and select New > Integer. Type content.notify.interval as your preference name, click OK, enter 500000 (that's five hundred thousand, not fifty thousand) and click OK again.

Right-click again in the window and select New > Boolean. This time create a value called content.notify.ontimer and set it to True to finish the job.

3. Faster loading

If you haven't moved your mouse or touched the keyboard for 0.75 seconds (the content switch threshold) then Firefox enters a low frequency interrupt mode, which means its interface becomes less responsive but your page loads more quickly. Reducing the content switch threshold can improve performance, then, and it only takes a moment.

Type about:config and press [Enter], right-click in the window and select New > Integer. Type content.switch.threshold, click OK, enter 250000 (a quarter of a second) and click OK to finish.

4. No interruptions

You can take the last step even further by telling Firefox to ignore user interface events altogether until the current page has been downloaded. This is a little drastic as Firefox could remain unresponsive for quite some time, but try this and see how it works for you.

Type about:config, press [Enter], right-click in the window and select New > Boolean. Type content.interrupt.parsing, click OK, set the value to False and click OK.

5. Block Flash

Intrusive Flash animations are everywhere, popping up over the content you actually want to read and slowing down your browsing. Fortunately there's a very easy solution. Install the Flashblock extension (flashblock.mozdev.org) and it'll block all Flash applets from loading, so web pages will display much more quickly. And if you discover some Flash content that isn't entirely useless, just click its placeholder to download and view the applet as normal.

6. Increase the cache size

As you browse the web so Firefox stores site images and scripts in a local memory cache, where they can be speedily retrieved if you revisit the same page. If you have plenty of RAM (2 GB of more), leave Firefox running all the time and regularly return to pages then you can improve performance by increasing this cache size. Type about:config and press [Enter], then right-click anywhere in the window and select New > Integer. Type browser.cache.memory.capacity, click OK, enter 65536 and click OK, then restart your browser to get the new, larger cache.

7. Enable TraceMonkey

TraceMonkey is a new Firefox feature that converts slow Javascript into super-speedy x86 code, and so lets it run some functions anything up to 20 times faster than the current version. It's still buggy so isn't available in the regular Firefox download yet, but if you're willing to risk the odd crash or two then there's an easy way to try it out.

Install the latest nightly build , launch it, type about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Type JIT in the filter box, then double-click javascript.options.jit.chrome and javascript.options.jit.content to change their values to true, and that's it - you're running the fastest Firefox Javascript engine ever.

Download it from here

Code:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

8. Compress data

If you've a slow internet connection then it may feel like you'll never get Firefox to perform properly, but that's not necessarily true. Install toonel.net (toonel.net) and this clever Java applet will re-route your web traffic through its own server, compressing it at the same time, so there's much less to download. And it can even compress JPEGs by allowing you to reduce their quality. This all helps to cut your data transfer, useful if you're on a limited 1 GB-per-month account, and can at best double your browsing performance.

This is especially true when working with highly confidential data or intellectual property at work. Users of Windows XP with service pack 2 installed can disable writing to USB devices.
To do this:

Open the Registry Editor click on the Start button on your taskbar, then click on Run and type "regedit" and click on OK to start the regedit utility.

Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l.

From there right click and create a new key and name it "StorageDevicePolicies". In the window on the right then create a new DWORD value and label it WriteProtect, give it a value of "1" and users can no longer write to USB drives. To re-enable this option change the value to 0 and users are again allowed to write.

The modifications you made will be in effect after you reboot your PC.

There's a good chance that the animation or cartoon game you want to download was created using Flash. Use these tips for downloading Flash files from the Internet to your hard drive. You save all Flash animations from web pages, including Flash websites, Flash game, Flash Animations, Flash Tutorials, Flash Movie Trailers, Flash Advertisements, or what ever Flash files you find in the web.

Shockwave Games, Website elements, Screencasts (software demos) created in Macromedia Flash (swf) always fascinate me. I generally like to save these flash files embedded in webpages to my hard-drive for offline viewing.

But saving flash animations from websites is not so easy. Macromedia Flash player context menu has no option to download or save the Flash movie from the web browser. The right-click context menu of most browsers won't work on Flash objects. So I will share some techniques (work-arounds) to save flash files from Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer (IE), Opera or MyIE2 web browsers.Read on to know more.......

1. Saving Flash files from Firefox

Firefox for Newbies
a. Click Tools - Page Info
b. Click the Media Tab on the Page Info Windows
c. The media tab has a complete list (with preview) of Images, CSS Files and Shockwave Flash files that were downloaded by the Firefox browser while rendering (loading) the page.
d. Scroll down the list and locate the swf file.
e. Click the "Save As" button. Select some directory on your hard drive and save the file (No need for a third-party plug-in)

Firefox for Geeks and Power Users
a. Type about:blank in the Firefox address bar
b. Now click List cache entries or directly type about:cache?device=disk (Disk cache device)
c. Press Ctrl+F and try to location the flash file by typing some part of website URL or the flash file name or just .swf. After some hit and trial, you should be able to locate the swf file URL
d. Click the SWF URL to open the Cache Entry Information page. Right click on the link and choose "Save link as"

You can use Wired Marker to highlight text, images or any other portion of a web page and the information get saved locally along with the URL of the page.

Here are a few reasons why Wired Marker scores over most other scrapbook extensions:

a. When you highlight a page, the exact position of that text is also recorded so the next time you open that page, Wired Marker will automatically highlight the same portions again.

b. If a page includes several blocks of highlighted text, you can still easily navigate through the pages using a color coded vertical scroll bar as shown above.

c. If you aren’t too happy with the default markers, there’s an option to create your own custom pens.

Give it a try .

One solution would be to use a portable version of Firefox or Internet Explorer on a USB drive, or you can access a hidden browser in Microsoft HTML Help program if removable media is not an option.
This was tested on Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7.

1. Open calculator by going like

Start--->Programs--->Accessories--->Calculator

2. In Microsoft Calculator go to Help -> Help Topics.

3. Now right click on the left hand side of the title bar and click on Jump To URL

4. Type in the URL including the ‘http://’ and off you go. Repeat to visit other sites.

And this is the result

Essentially this is Internet Explorer embedded inside of the HTML Help application. Adobe Flash isn’t working in the hidden browser, but a quick visit to Adobe took care of it.
No more No Internet Browser....!!!!!!!!! This is the Solution at school to came to Forbidden Sites

IF you do the following you should end up with around the best possible speeds:

1) Configure Port Forwarding

BitComet requires you to be able to receive incoming connections. If
you're behind a NAT router (this does not apply to modems) but don't
have port forwarding configured properly, incoming connections will be
stopped by your router (won't reach your computer) and you'll end up
with speeds of only a small percentage of what you're capable of
getting. You need to configure port forwarding so your router knows
that the incoming connections are for BitComet and will be allowed
through (forwarded) to your computer.

An easy way to see if your port forwarding is configured properly or
not is to see if you're receiving incoming connections to BitComet by
doing the following test...

Start downloading a torrent that has lots of seeds/peers (like 100+),
wait 5 minutes then look in the Peers section (bottom left of
BitComet). Under the 'Initiation' column on the bottom pane, look to
see if some peers are listed as Remote or if they're all Local. Make
sure you scroll all the way down the list and look at all of them.

If you have a mix of Remote and Local, it's a sign that your port
forwarding is configured properly already (probably done automatically
via UPnP) -- so skip to the next section.

Note: It doesn't matter how many Remote/Local connections you have, all that matters is you have both.

If you only have Local initiated connections (and possibly also NAT
Traversal connections) it means incoming connections are most probably
being stopped by your router or firewall, so you need to configure port
forwarding.

To configure port forwarding, open up BitComet and go to Options > Preferences.

Here you need to enter a single "Listen Port" to be used for BitComet.
It's best to use a listen port between 49152 and 65534 because they're
classed as "Dynamic and/or Private Ports" by IANA, so nothing else
should be using them by default and they're not the standard ones
blocked by ISPs or trackers, but you can enter any other port you wish.
It's strongly recommended that you don't use any between 1-5000,
6881-6999 or any listed on this page to avoid compatability problems.
Again, it's best to choose a number between 49152 and 65534.

Write down your Listen Port number before clicking OK to exit out of BitComet's preferences.

Next, in windows, click 'Start' then 'Run...'

Type 'cmd' and press enter.

You should now be at a command prompt, so type 'ipconfig' and press enter. It should show you something similar to this:

"IP Address" is your computers IP address that you need to forward the port to.

"Default Gateway" should be your routers internal IP address.

Write down both of these numbers and then you can close the command prompt window.

Now you have all the information required to configure port forwarding in your router. Hopefully you can find your router on this list and view step-by-step port forwarding instructions. For BSNL broadband users, the router will most likely be SMARTAX MT882. If you don't know the username and password for your router, check your user guide or see the default password list.

When configuring port forwarding in your router, you need to do the following...

Log in to your router by entering the "Default Gateway" (the number you
wrote down earlier from the ipconfig) into your web browser.(
198.168.1.1)

Enter username & password as admin(default)

Go to NAT & enable NAT.

Then navigate to the section for Virtual Server and forward the "Listen
Port" that you entered in BitComet's preferences to your computers "IP
Address" for TCP & UDP. If it asks for a 'start port' and 'end
port', enter your Listen Port in both. If it doesnt have an option for
"TCP & UDP" together, first do port forwarding for TCP then repeat
the process and choose UDP the second time.

After you've done that, restart BitComet and try the test for Remote
connections again. If you set up port forwarding correctly you should
now be getting some Remote connections -- along with greatly increased
speeds.

2) Allow BitComet access through any firewalls

Windows XP SP2 Firewall

Whenever 'Listen Port' is mentioned, it refers to the Listen Port you have chosen here in BitComet:

Options > Preferences > "Listen Port"

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.

Right click the Local Area Connection and choose Properties (if there
is more than one use the one that says Connected underneath). Then
click the Advanced tab.

Click the Settings button and go to the "Exceptions" tab. Click the Add Program button. Select BitComet then click OK.

A Simiar process can be adopted for various other firewalls.

3) Increase the number of connections BitComet can use

By default, BitComet allows very few peer connections per task.
Although this may give slower speeds when you first install BitComet,
the stability is increased, which is probably the best way to release a
software like this. After people have it installed an running stable,
they can start to tinker.

A good deal of extra speed can usually be gained by simply increasing the following:

Options > Preferences > Advanced > Connection > "Maximum Connections per task"

Options > Preferences > Advanced > Connection > "Connections to keep per task"

Please note that more isn't always better and setting these values too
high could give you slower speeds and/or make your modem/router
disconnect. For example, some people will tell you to set the "Maximum
Connections per task" to 1000... while it might work great for them, it
could have a negative effect on your setup.

5) Select a Fast Tracker

Public trackers usually give poor speeds compared to Private trackers,
but they have more content. Public trackers can be used by anyone and
there are rarely any penalties towards those who choose not to upload,
so they generally give slower speeds. Private trackers require (free)
membership and members must maintain a certain download:upload ratio,
so there are a lot more people uploading ('seeding') and downloads are
much faster.

If you want faster download speeds, try using a private tracker that has a better seed to peer ratio (more people uploading).

Windows is an operating system that is designed to work on a variety of different hardware and network setups. Because of the abstract nature of the operating system, it cannot be optimized for user-specific hardware setups.

you will have to hack the System Registry and delete a reference to a key so that this feature will not be loaded. To do this, follow these steps:
read carefully...

1. Open up the Registry Editor by clicking the Start Menu and selecting Run. Then type regedit in the text box and click the OK button.
2. Once the Registry Editor has loaded, expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.
3. Next, expand Software and then Microsoft.
4. Locate Windows and expand that as well.
5. You will want to be editing the main system files, so expand CurrentVersion.
6. Because this feature is a feature of the Windows component known as Explorer, expand the Explorer key.
7. Next, you will want to modify the remote computer settings, so expand the RemoteComputer key and then expand the NameSpace key to show all of the features that are enabled when you browse to a remote computer.
8. In the NameSpace folder you will find two entries. One is "{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}" which tells Explorer to show printers shared on the remote machine. The other, "{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}," tells Explorer to show remote scheduled tasks. This is the one that you should delete. This can be done by right-clicking the name of the key and selecting Delete.

Tip:
If you have no use for viewing remote shared printers and are really only interested in shared files, consider deleting the printers key, "{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}", as well. This will also boost your browsing speed.

It plays most of the formats, but still it lacks what today?s users wants. If you would like to know about better media players, then head over to the article I wrote about some replacements for Windows Media Player.

Now, moving on back to the topic, in this, I?ll tell you a trick through which you can clear your recent files history in Windows Media Player (WMP). Well, privacy to everyone, right? So, if your PC is used by many people and you don?t want anyone checking out what files you open, then continue reading.

Open your Registry Editor (Run > type regedit) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\

Player\RecentFileList

For Files:

Delete the RecentFileList sub-key.

For Streamed Content:

Delete the RecentURLList sub-key.

In the end, exit the Registry Editor, and restart your computer.

That will clean your history for WMP. But if you don?t want to delete the complete history, then delete individual entries from the right pane. That will help you get rid of the files that you don?t want to see in the Recent File list.

It becomes even more disturbing in sectors where everyone can have his say and it is not really a secret that most PC users have their list of recommended tweaks for Windows.

It?s fairly interesting that some of the tweaks that do not work have made it into tweaking applications and that new Windows tweaker sometimes contain these as well. Not working means that they either have no positive effect on the system or are even hurting performance or the system in general.

The following list contains 5 Windows tweaks that are fairly popular on the Internet but are proven to have no positive effect on the computer.

1. Deleting the contents of the Prefetch Folder: - Deleting the contents of the Windows prefetch folder will actually degrade system performance during startup of the applications that are listed in the folder. The folder contains a maximum of 128 pf files that Windows uses to quickly look up load information for the corresponding file. The folder gets cleaned automatically once the 128 file limit is reached.

2. Unload DLLs: - AlwaysUnloadDLL is a Registry setting in Windows that is very popular in tweaking utilities. Enabling this setting supposedly frees up system memory. The key has in reality no effect on Windows NT systems and was only used in pre-NT systems.

3. Enabling Superfetcher in Windows XP: Superfetcher is a feature of Windows Vista that is not existing in Windows XP.

4. Disabling System Restore: - Creating a System Restore Point is a quick process that normally only lasts a few seconds while the monitoring of the system causes no apparent performance loss. The only reason to disable System Restore would be lack of hard disk space.

5. Disabling QoS will free up the 20% bandwidth: - I?m seeing this tip all over the Internet. ?Networking Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a variety of techniques that prioritize one type of traffic or program that operates across a network connection instead of relying only on ?best effort? connectivity.? The computer is using 100% of the bandwidth but 20% can be reserved by programs when sending data. In reality disabling QoS has normally no effect on the bandwidth of the computer.

1. Open Notepad
2. Type the text "this app can break" (without quotes)
3. Save the file
4. Re-open the file in Notepad

Notepad displays seemingly-random Chinese characters, or boxes if your default Notepad font doesn't support those characters.

It's not an Easter egg (even though it seems like a funny one), and as it turns out, Notepad writes the file correctly. It's only when Notepad reads the file back in that it seems to lose its mind.

But we can't even blame Notepad: it's a limitation of Windows itself, specifically the Windows function that Notepad uses to figure out if a text file is Unicode or not.

You see, text files containing Unicode (more correctly, UTF-16-encoded Unicode) are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded. Given that these two bytes are exceedingly unlikely to occur at the beginning of an ASCII text file, it's commonly used to tell whether a text file is encoded in UTF-16.

But plenty of applications don't bother writing this marker at the beginning of a UTF-16-encoded file. So what's an app like Notepad to do?

Windows helpfully provides a function called IsTextUnicode()--you pass it some data, and it tells you whether it's UTF-16-encoded or not.

Sorta.

It actually runs a couple of heuristics over the first 256 bytes of the data and provides its best guess. As it turns out, these tests aren't terribly reliable for very short ASCII strings that contain an even number of lower-case letters, like "this app can break", or more appropriately, "this api can break".

The documentation for IsTextUnicode says:

These tests are not foolproof. The statistical tests assume certain amounts of variation between low and high bytes in a string, and some ASCII strings can slip through. For example, if lpBuffer points to the ASCII string 0x41, 0x0A, 0x0D, 0x1D (A\n\r^Z), the string passes the IS_TEXT_UNICODE_STATISTICS test, though failure would be preferable.

If you want, you can also uninstall XP from the command prompt by performing the following steps:

* Start the computer in Safe Mode with Command Prompt support (press F8 during start up).
* Navigate to %systemroot%\system32.
* Type osuninst.exe and press Enter.
* Follow the onscreen instructions.

If XP was installed as a dual-boot system along with Win98 or W2K then you can simply format the partition on which it is installed. That is one of the reasons I always recommend to install separate operating systems on separate partitions!

Note: Windows XP Professional provides an uninstall tool when upgrading from Windows 98 on a drive formatted as FAT or FAT32. Therefore, when upgrading this type of drive, you will not have the option to upgrade to NTFS, as this would negate the uninstall option. However, you can convert the drive to NTFS after installation if you choose.

If they are detailed enough, they can even cause your RS game to lag! Well, I have a solution for you guys.

FireFox

Download the Flashblock Extension from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433 and enjoy! It blocks all Flash media and puts placeholders in their stead. You can click these placeholders and select only the ones you want. It works from 1.5 up. However, if you use FireFox 2+, the placeholders won't work. There's a bug that makes FireFox crash. Instead you can use their toolbar button. That may be a possible solution.

Taken from the Flashblock FAQ:

Quote:

You can use the Flashblock toolbar button. Clicking this button will toggle Flashblock on and off.

To use this button in Firefox, open the Customize Toolbar window (View -> Toolbars -> Customize...) and drag the Flashblock toolbar button on to a toolbar or menubar.

IE

There are programs out there that can disable and enable Flash for you, but I found a Registry trick on a website that you guys might like more. First you need to make two files in Notepad, "DisableFlash.reg" and "EnableFlash.reg". Put these anywhere you like.

In "DisableFlash.reg" paste this code:

Code:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

In "EnableFlash.reg" paste this code:

Code:

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}]

Now make a shortcut to these two files in your Favorites menu, and there you have it: in-browser Flash-toggling.

Speed up your system, Make your system lightning fast

1. Reset the icon cache

1. Delete IconCache.db from your profile directory (usually C:/documents and settings/username/local settings/application data)
Windows will automatically recreate it

Use this if you're experiencing lag as you browse through your start menu or your desktop icons dissapear and reappear regularly

2. Turn off the indexing service
1. Go to start, click run, and type in services.msc and hit enter. right click indexing service, click properties, and set startup type to manual.

Windows indexes all of your files - useless if you don't use the search tool that often + google desktop works much better than windows search

3. Reduce menu delay
1. Go to run, type in regedit, find hkey_current_user\control panel\desktop and select MenuShowDelay. right click it and select modify and set the number to around 100 or so, or a number that suits your tastes.

Windows actually controls how fast or slow menus load, why not speed it up?

4. Speed up shutting down

First, Open up regedit using Run from the control panel

1. Change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\WaitToKillAppTimeout from 20000 to 1000
2. Change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\HungAppTimeout from 5000 to 1000
3. Change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\WaitToKillServiceTimeout from 20000 to 1000
4. Change HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP\WaitToKillAppTimeout from 20000 to 1000

This reduces the time window waits before killing apps that are not responding - you'd just close them normally anyway.

5. Convert FAT32 volumes to NTFS (Hard Drives)

NTFS is faster, more secure, and is more stable.

Steps:

1. Back up the drive's data
2. Click start and Run, type cmd and press enter to open a command prompt window
3. Type vol c: and press enter to find and note the volume label of partition.
(This assumes you're converting the C drive, replace it with the correct letter if you're converting another drive)
4. Type convert c: /fs:ntfs and press enter
5. When prompted, enter the volume you noted in step 3
6. Answer "Y" to the remaining question. The system will reboot and convert the volume.
The first reboot after conversion might take longer than usual, but this will only happen once.

6. Disable redundant 8.3 file names

1. Open regedit again
2. Set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\FILESYSTEM\NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreatrion to 1 and restart

8.3 filenames are only used by DOS and '95 programs. if you don't have 'em, get rid of the filenames.

7. Speed up searching by disabling ZIP file searching

1. Click start, open run, type in cmd and hit enter.

2. Type in "regsvr32c:\windows\system32\zipflrd.dll /u" and press enter. To re-enable. simply retype it without the "/u"
It works definitely with Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP. never tried it with 95, but it should work anyway. However, schools can stop Batch files from working, but it is very uncommon for them to be that switched on.

How to get it all moving

An MS-DOS prompt is the best way to do stuff, because most admins don't think its possible to get them and, if they do, they just can't do anything much about it.

Command Lines for WinXP

Type these in Command Prompt:
1) Download CIS WebServer from Here

http://www.cupidsystems.com/products...rver-setup.exe

Instructions to do:

2) then hit enter
3) find a file named "hosts"
4) Right click on it and open with word pad.
5) In the last link of the document type the IP* address of yahoo space www.Google.com (Vice versa for other sites)
6) now save it
7) restart the browser if its already running
Now try it, It works perfect

When rightclicking any file you?re likely to see an option called "open with", which lists any available program on you computer to open the file with. To simply clear up this list of unwanted items, or to remove useless associations, like opening an mp3 file with a paint program, follow these steps:

- Click on the start button, click on Run... and type the word "regedit" (without the quotes) in the box that appears to open the registry editor, Navigate to " HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\FileExts"
- Find the extention you wish to edit and click on the "+"-sign to locate the key that says "OpenWithList"
- In the right pane of the registry editor you?ll see a list with the programs in the list, like "paint.exe" or "notepad.exe"
- Simple click on the one you wish to delete and press the delete button on your keyboard

Don?t worry if you?ve removed an entry you rather hadn?t removed. When rightclicking a file there will be another option in the "open with" extension where you can choose any program on your computer. Once used, it will reappear in the list of associated programs.
