There is a probability puzzle called ‘Monty Hall Problem’ which I’ll try to fit into Bollywood’s report card post My Name is Khan.

Looking for some entertainment you have already burned your fingers with duds like Toh Baat Pakki and Click, last week. This week you have two options- Teen Patti and Karthik Calling Karthik. I assume you are interested in the former (thanks to the hot item babe and the slick teaser) that’s why you have landed on this page.

Now given a choice to make a switch between the two movies, how many of you would like to trade their options? Here Mr. Monty Hall’s proverbial paradox comes handy and recommends you to make a switch and there is a greater probability that you’ll end up as a winner.

I, however, wasn’t lucky enough and went ahead with Teen Patti and I guess Monty Hall has been proved right once again. I chose a wrong movie.

Teen Patti is the story of Prof. Venkat Subramaniam (Amitabh Bachchan), a maverick but a genius nonetheless, who has devised an obscure theory of probability. One day, back in his village he receives an invitation from another Mathematics genius Perci Trachtenberg (Sir Ben Kingsley) to visit him.

The twain meet at the prestigious Cambridge University and Venkat narrates him the horrors of his ingenious discovery turning into a nightmare marred by greed and deception.

Dejected and ridiculed by his colleagues Venkat roped in junior professor Shantanu (R Madhavan) and three students Aparna aka Apu (Shraddha Kapoor), Sid (Siddharth Kher) and Bikram (Dhruv). They all go to the down market gambling dens, play the game employing the theory and win it.

But soon greed comes in and gets them all into trouble. An unknown blackmailer starts calling Subramanium and demanding a big share in the money they make from their games. The blackmailer even starts dictating which games they should play next.

Meanwhile, another richie rich student Abbas (Vaibhav) too joins the game. Subramanium starts suspecting the blackmailer to be one amongst his group members but soon a situation arises where he gets convinced it is none of them but someone else who is playing the game on him. What happens next makes up this amorphous flick.

The script is totally erratic. Lead characters keep mouthing contradictory dialogues, burst into fits of anger, hurl abuses at each other at the drop of the hat. Amitabh Bachchan leads the gang but fails to save the desultory story.

Madhavan seriously needs to work on his love handle before handling the hotties like Saira Mohan onscreen.

Brat pack (Dhruv Ganesh, Siddharth Kher, Vaibhav Talwar) and their floozie Shraddha Kapoor look raw and at times completely lost just like film's screenplay. Cameos by Raima Sen, Barry John, Jackie Shroff, Ajay Devgan and Shakti Kapoor don’t help either. Don’t expect another Gandhi from Sir Ben. He has been reduced to a mere listener here.

We hear that Leena Yadav had roped in the services of a Hollywood editor over and above her desi editor Kaushik Das. Hughes Winborne who has won an Oscar for his editing in Paul Haggis's Crash has done the 're-edit' of Teen Patti.

Has it helped the film? Yes, Winborne makes director Leena Yadav’s feckless effort to end in little over 2 hours and you thank your stars on your way out.

Let’s call spade a spade, Teen Patti is a big bluff and 21 gone wrong.

After attending the Harvard business school Preity Zinta is all set to dabble in various aspects of the entertainment industry, including production.Preity feels she is now equipped to handle her role as an entrepreneur far better.Speaking at length on her experiences for the first time Preity says, “I took the plunge in December and went back to school, to Harvard School. Believe you me, it was the most enriching experience of my life. I didn't do it because I wanted to go back to college. I wanted to learn about business management so I could be a better entrepreneur.”Preity attended classes at Harvard for three weeks every day from 9 am to 11 pm. “When I joined films I never went to an acting school. Then last year I did a two-day workshop with Anupam Kher. It enriched me so much. I wondered why I never went to acting school. Now that I'm an entrepreneur I didn't want to look back and ask the same question one day.I had to go to the best business school in the world. When I filled out the admission form for Harvard my hands were shaking. I had tried earlier and couldn't get in.”When Preity got selected for Harvard she was ecstatic. “I got in on sheer merit and not because I was a star in Bollywood. When I went there I was so nervous. I wasn't even computer savvy. I was scared I wouldn't understand a lot of what was said in the classes. And I didn't. But I wasn't scared to put up my hand in class and ask questions. No one knew me there.” Soon of course word spread among the Asians in the campus that Preity Zinta was in their midst.Laughs the hassle-free actress. “The Indians in the faculty did recognize me eventually. They were taken aback that I was coming to Harvard. But they were discreet. They'd come up and say. 'Oh my God, what're you doing here? Why aren't you doing movies any more?'At the gym on the campus I saw a work-out dance class for cardio exercizes and when I went there they were dancing to Bollywood stuff including my Where's the party tonight.When I joined them the dance instructor said, 'You really move your hips well.' I had the best time of my life. I felt so proud to see so many young Asian students in Harvard. That was the future. It was fantastic. I learnt negotiations and mergers acquisitions, etc. There were students from all over the world, including of course Asians. More than the just the course, the questions that the students asked were so pertinent.”Preity is ready to apply her newly-found business acumen to various ventures.“But as far as my role in the IPL cricket team is concerned it's all settled down now.I don't need to give that much time to cricket. My focus is now back to movies. I'm on the verge of signing new films.”Speaking about her new equation with Ness Wadia as purely business partners Preity shakesher head, “The media has been trying to find awkwardness in our equation. Why should that be? We're still good friends. We're no longer seeing each other. We're colleagues now. If ever I'm in a situation I'm sure he'd watch my back, as I'd watch his. But would people let go of this fascination with the equation between me and Ness? It's been one year since we broke up.” Preity feels her mode of discreet frankness in her public conduct is now getting outdated. “I'm surrounded by celebrities who are constantly discussing their personal lives. I'm the same Preity Zinta I used to be. You won't find me discussing my private life in detail. I'm in a very good space right now. The only problem is, any man whom I'm seen with in public is automatically linked with me. I've come to a place where none of my male friends want to go out with my any more! I think I'll just have to pick my date for the next public event through a contest.”Preity has been spending a lot of time outside Mumbai. On Republic Day she was in Delhi hanging out with her closest school friend Shagun.“I watched the Republic Day parade on television. I love the parade. It's a moment of great pride every year. Whenever I'm not shooting I'm out of the country. Don't get me wrong. I love Mumbai to death. But tell me what can an actor can do in the city if she isn't working? I can't go out partying. If I do I've to beg some women to come along, otherwise the guy and I get linked up.I can't handle it anymore.”To Preity's horror she now has to cope with rumours of being linked not only with her co-stars but also with cricketers. “Can you imagine, members of my own team!I've always maintained I'd never mix business and pleasure. Now that I'm getting fully into business I'm narrowing my chances of finding a man. I know I'd never get into criminal activities, so maybe…..” And Preity bursts into long throaty laughter.“Last year I was too busy experiencing life to talk about it. 2009 was a year of learning for me. Now I reap the dividends of what I learnt. I went back to college. I realized there's so much to me that that I and forgotten.I wasn't traveling and nursing a broken heart. Just because I wasn't giving explanations. The worst you can do to someone who's recovering from an emotional setback is to crowd them. I should've been left alone. It's like a death in your family. Those condolence calls just set your teeth on edge. My way of dealing with my breakup was to move on. The Harvard experience really rejuvenated me. I've come back a different person. You watch 2010 is going to be the best year of my life.As Mr Bachchan would say, it's going to be mindboggling.”

Chance Pe Dance - New Bollywood Movie

Shahid Kapur was the obvious choice because Ken Ghosh works only with him and he is a fabulous dancer.

He plays Sameer, a talented and passionate young struggling actor. Positive and brimming with energy, Sameer juggles various jobs while working towards getting his big break in the industry. During his struggle he meets Tina (Genelia D’souza) who is a choreographer.

Just when Sameer is promised his big break, he is left without a house as he cannot pay his rent. Not one to lose heart Sam starts living in his rickety old car and starts teaching dance in a school to young kids who have never won any dance competition. He hates kids and the kids hate dancing.

The struggle in life continues as the director who was to launch Sameer now decides to choose his hero through a talent hunt. Sam is shattered but he diverts his focus towards the kids. Getting over his initial dislike of children, Sam not only emotionally bonds with them, but also helps them win a prestigious inter-school dance competition and gets their confidence back - aided by the spirited and beautiful Tina.

Tina urges Sameer to enter the reality hunt, with the love and support from Tina and the kids, Sameer emerges a winner and eventually becomes what he was destined to be, a superstar.

Yahoo was the working title of the movie but they eventually chose the catchy Chance Pe Dance. Star was also considered in the initial stages but a movie called Superstar starring Kunal Khemu released in early 2007. The makers thought that if a movie with Kunal Khemu, who is hardly a star, can be called Superstar, how can a movie with Shahid Kapoor, who is a sizeable star with a huge fan following, be called only Star?

They were talks about Katrina Kaif being Shahid’s co-star but the makers eventually zeroed in on Jiah Khan. She shot for the film but was asked to leave halfway through. Reportedly, she got over-friendly with Shahid Kapoor and was not doing her job well. She was replaced by girl-next-door-of-the-moment, Genelia D’Souza who shot her scenes in a whirlwind schedule.

Commenting on the movie, Shahid Kapur said, “I have a very positive feeling about Genelia and me. We make a good pair on screen. Contrary to rumours, I have not interfered in the casting of the film. I love dancing and Justin Timberlake’s choreographer, Marty has choreographed the dance sequences in the movie.”
