Can you see the honey bee nest, exposed and in the palm frond? It looks like it has 3 'plates' of comb, and is what we consider an 'external' nest architecture.

Most European honey bees (the gentle, tame bee we keep in our white hive boxes) build nests inside cavities, such as hollow tree trunks and such. The African Honey Bee ( a wild subspecies that is illegal to keep here in Florida), readily builds such external nests. We now have so many wild African honey bees in Brevard County, that I tell beekeepers, if you want to catch wild bees, just put out empty cardboard boxes, as African bees will gladly appreciate your efforts and build a colony inside the box within a week or two!.

We
are encountering more and more 'mean' bees in Brevard, and we even have
some neighborhoods noted with higher than average numbers of
Africanized Honey Bees, meaning we have to practice very careful
methods, so that we don't threaten neighbors and pets.

If you have a colony of
pest honey bees or any stinging insect, please give us a call or email. I
am a stinging insect entomologist, with years of education, experience
and knowledge and can provide you with a proper removal so you never
have to deal with an infestation again. I carry all licenses and
insurance to protect you, my valuable client. Beware of unlicensed
operators, often beekeepers, that are trying to earn extra money by
performing improper removals, resulting in mass sting events that threaten residents with sting risk
liabilities and damaged premises.

Remember,
bee removal is considered pest control, and any inspection, advice, or
removal procedures require licenses. We have seen many citizens, wronged
by unlicensed removals. Don't get stung by an illegal operator, it
could cost you thousands!

Please,
don't attempt a Brevard County Bee Removal, as they can be deadly, even
swarms have attacked us since Killer Bees are now here. We've had
fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging insect
removal techniques. I've written 2 blog posts about these dangerous bee removals.. go here and here
to read this valuable information.. It might just save you and your
neighbors from getting stung or spending hundreds of dollars too much!

Here's a cool photo of a Melbourne, Florida Honey Bee Swarm removal we performed for a property management firm. Notice how 'bunched up' the bees are, in and around a palm frond. Hard to believe you are seeing about 20,000 bees!

Often, we advise homeowners to 'wait & see' what the swarm will do, as most of the time these swarms are just temporary bivouacs, where the bees are just hanging out while a dedicated core group of scouts is out searching for a permanent location to move the swarm too. Often, this permanent location can be in a nearby tree hole, building wall, soffit or attic, or even ground voids such as meter boxes.

If the swarm moves away in a day or so, groovy! You likely will never have to deal with a swarm again. If they hang around for several days, approaching a week, please call us, as the swarm may be establishing permanent digs, and once colony construction continues, a once seemingly gentle swarm can turn into a very defensive bee nest of tens of thousands of honey bees, defending their new home.

We
are encountering more and more 'mean' bees in Brevard, and we even have
some neighborhoods noted with higher than average numbers of
Africanized Honey Bees, meaning we have to practice very careful
methods, so that we don't threaten neighbors and pets.

Beware of unlicensed
operators, often beekeepers, that are trying to earn extra money by
performing improper removals and threatening residents with sting risk
liabilities and damaged premises.

Remember,
bee removal is considered pest control, and any inspection, advice, or
removal procedures require licenses. We have seen many citizens, wronged
by unlicensed removals. Don't get stung by an illegal operator, it
could cost you thousands!

Most honey bee nests were, and still are, found inside voids, such as tree holes, nesting boxes, structural wall voids and the like.

So, several years ago, when we started encountering higher numbers of external nests as you see in the pic above, we knew our day of reckoning had arrived. You see, there are sub-species of honey bees that readily build external nests, and they are not the sub-species we have been farming for hundreds of years here in the U.S. No, these nests are usually built by the African Honey Bee. aka, Killer Bees, Apis mellifera scutellata .

These numbers of nests heralded a new era in feral honey bee management, as these critters can exhibit drastically different behavior than their gentle European bee cousins. For instance, minor disturbances, such as a squirrel running across the tree branch, can cause these bees to fan out over hundreds of feet, looking for the perceived intruders. Once found, these guard bees can sting, leaving their stingers embedded within the victim. The stingers exude alarm pheromone, wafting into the air, providing a target path for up to 50,000 other nest-mates to quickly attack the now hapless victim. Immense pain, unconsciousness and death can be the quick result.

Bees LOVE to build their nests in Tree holes.. the holes you
see in larger trees, often where a limb used to be. Many trees are
hollow inside and can have dozens of feet of a nice, insulated void for
the bee colony to build it's nest of wax, pollen, honey and baby bees.

These nests can number over 50 thousand
individuals, and often become rather ornery or flat-out mean, stinging
people, pets and passer-bys.

Please, don't attempt a
treatment or removal of these Tampa bees, as most are now Africanized,
AKA "Killer Bees", and you can incite a neighborhood-wide stinging event
that can last for days! We've had fatalities occur in Florida because of improper stinging
insect removal techniques.
The photo below shows a The Villages, FL. Honey Bee Swarm, perched high in a tree about 40 feet in the air. I had to use my telephoto lens to shoot it.

Buggers, because this very large, very healthy looking swarm, issued from one of our honey bee hive boxes, in a yard we keep in Oxford, near The Villages, Florida. I was in the yard to perform maintenance and was to 'split' some of our hive boxes, partly in order to keep swarming from happening!

Swarming is simply the honey bee colony's way of reproducing. The Queen and about 10-20,000 of her daughters and sons, fly away from the existing nest, and land somewhere nearby, in order to figure out where to move to permanently.

When this happens , we lose a LOT of bees, the queen and a lot of honey making ability.

Very dark and foreboding mood, as i suppose it should be as we are eradicating a colony of very interesting and beneficial insects. But alas, along with the good comes the bad, these bees were very defensive, stinging grounds personnel working nearby. It's just not something that can be allowed to continue, as human lives take precendence above individual bee colonies.
Ok, they probably don't "like" to build them, but tree holes are a natural, safe environment for honey bees and we find many pest colonies of bees residing in tree holes.

Now, many of our clients would like us to do a live removal, and relocate the bee colony to one of our apiaries. It breaks some hearts when we explain that the only way one can do a True Live Bee Removal from a tree hole, is to cut the portion of the tree away where the colony is located and then cut that portion open to get at the nest. Most clients really don't want to remove their trees, so the only option available is to terminate the bee colony.

Some might ask, "Why don't you leave the honey bee colony where it is? After all we are losing bee populations, right? Well, yes we've had increased mortality in our managed honey bees, those that we keep in white boxes. However, most of the bees we encounter in yards, buildings, etc., at least here in Florida, are not bees that we really want to keep in our white hive boxes. Most wild or feral bees have 'mixed-up' genetics, and make poor candidates for serious beekeepers. Worse yet, the numbers of Africanized (or African, or Killer Bees) are shooting through the roof here in Florida, with increases in bee attacks occuring. Trying live removals of feral bees located in or around humans is frought with danger and liability risk. It's something that we are doing less and less of every day.

And leave that colony in the tree, and odds are, as the colony increases in size, your risk for sting incidents go higher too. Daily, we field calls from folks who suffer stings from bee colonies that were very docile. Something happens to make the colony more defensive and POW!, your Saturday morning chores are put on hold as you spend the weekend in the hospital, recovering from an overload of bee venom.
This colony of bees had been threatening citizens at a local Orlando City Park, and because we are seeing higher numbers of Africanized Honey Bees, ( AHB or Killer Bees!), City, Town and County Governments have us perform proper bee removals in many locations so citizens can enjoy safe use of government facilities.

Folks are often surprised to learn that we are seeing increased numbers of mean, Africanized Bees in central Orlando and other Central Florida cities. These are not places to be trying relocations of honey bees. The sting risk to nearby humans and pets is significant. There are folks so allergic to venom, that one sting can send them to the Emergency Room! Some can even die from one or a few stings!
The photo above illustrates one such event last summer in Gainesville, Florida. Tree surgeons were cutting down trees in a residential backyard and rope climbing in the trees when a honey bee colony located in the trunk of one tree was disturbed by the activity nearby. A climber was attacked by the honey bees, so badly that he couldn't yell down to his support crew, for all the attacking bees getting in his mouth, nose and ears.

Folks, It's important to respect honey bee colonies, whether they are African or European Honey Bees. Don't risk your life for a bee removal bill that's about the price of an emergency room visit, As if you self-remove, your life may be in jeapordy. Is it really worth the risk?

Our honey bee swarm season continues here in Orlando, and throughout Florida.

Honey bees live in a harmonious social structure that swells to maybe 50 THOUSAND adults during the spring blooming season. When colonies are bursting at the seam with such numbers, a swarm response occurs, where up to about half the colony's members will leave the nest in a coordinated issuance, flying around the nest area. The queen is coaxed to leave as well and the whole group is herded by a dedicated corps of 'scouts', that guide them to a new location to build a new colony.

The sight of this swarming behaviour is frightening to many, but if one stays quiet and moves little, one can observe a wonder of the world, for it still entertains and sets this seasoned entomologist to wonder. Check out our some of our bee swarm pages and our honey bee swarm blog posts and pics here.
This is a photo of a honey bee nest and myself, posing for the camera! You may noticed that the bees are not attacking me in this picture, and many will assume that this means the colony is not an African or Killer Bee colony. In reality, these bees turned out to be extremely defensive, nearly covering my veil as I was working them, just showing how bees can seem to be gentle, and with what seems to be a small amount of provocation, they can turn mean as fire.
You can see many female workers on the comb, which contains plenty of nectar, which is undergoing transformation into honey.
These used to be very rare, as the gentle European Honey bees that have been residents for over 300 years in the U.S., really prefer to build their nests within voids, such as tree holes and in building walls. However, as the Africanized Honey Bee, (AHB), has been spreading throughout Florida, we are encountering many, many more of these beautiful, but potentially deadly colonies.
This nest stretched over 4 FEET Long!, and was extremely defensive. We were hoping to perform a live removal and relocation with this nest, as it's located in a large, unpopulated ranch, however, these bees were so, so mean, that we had to eradicate them.

It makes no sense whatsoever to try to save such mean, and potentially killer bees. We have LOADS of feral honey bees in Florida and always put the safety of humans, pets and livestock above any feral bee colony. You should too.
Honey Bee queens start increasing their egglaying as nectar from spring flower blossoms are brought in by the thousands of foragers that each colony contains. Within weeks, the colony numbers can be 50,000 and that signals the colony to issue the Prime Directive: REPRODUCE!!!

And this is the product of the colony reproduction:

A 'swarm' of bees, that leaves the colony and lands temporarily, on a tree, a house or just about anything else. While it may seem to most folks that these are very dangerous, in reality, a swarm of 20,000 honey bees are likely not much of a threat.... as long as you don't try to eradicate or remove them improperly. In fact, in most cases, you can secure the area from traffic, and the swarm will leave for permanent digs within a few hours!!!
Here's the problem. This nest is located adjacent to a large manufacturing facility AND a school!. Children run through this natural area, and it's a disaster just waiting to happen. So, we've removed the nest, in a manner that minimizes bee activity after the removal. Most folks practicing this art seem to cast a blind eye to the numbers of bees that will cluster in the spot of the former nest, posing quite a danger to adults and children alike, as the bees get defensive and possibly stinging anything that moves.
The probability is High that these are Africanized Honey Bees (AHB), aka "Killer Bees", and not the desired European Honey Bees that we keep in our white boxes. However, it's possible to do a live relocation to our quarantine apiary, but we have to consider the sting risk before attempting such removals.

Please, do not attempt to perform removals on these type nests as these bees can turn very mean, once one tries to attempt removal or spraying.
One sting is sufficient to kill a person, if they are allergic.

Sometimes, we encounter Honey Bees that are extremely MEAN, so defensive, that they will sting any human or animal within hundreds of feet. When this happens we have to take extraordinary measures, often working with LEO (Law Enforcement), to close down streets, warn neighbors, which requires us to stay on location for hours. We can't be too careful.

This photo shows our Technician, Jason, working a Maitland Bee Removal, where the bees were so defensive, we had to have the street closed down for 3 hours until the returning foragers suffered sufficient mortality to lessen their defensive posture.

The Law requires bee removal firms to be State Licensed Pest Control Operators, NOT beekeepers. Common sense should dictate that one hires a true bee removal professional, such as us here at ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com. Honey Bees moved into a birdhouse in Winter Park, Fla., and ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com came to the homeowner's rescue to perform a live honey bee relocation.
Now, African Honey bees, aka Killer Bees, really, really prefer smaller voids such as bird houses, feeders, wildlife nesting boxes and the like, so it's quite probable that these are African. But, in this case , we were able to remove the birdhouse, with live bees and relocate them to our quarantine apiary, where we can monitor them and requeen to ensure good, gentle genetics.
If you have bees in a birdhouse, or anywhere else, contact us, the Stinging Insect Experts at http://ALLFloridaBeeRemoval.com or 800-343-5317.
Richard Martyniak, M.Sc., Entomologist
